Library’s Summer Program
Encourages
Literacy and Learning
Siouxland Libraries’ Summer Reading Program is just around the corner! Our Summer Reading Program is designed for toddlers, teens, and adults, offering more ways to read, create, explore, and discover. This year, we have introduced new challenges for kids and teens, along with fantastic activities for all ages and enjoyable, family-friendly events throughout the summer.
The theme for our 2025 Summer Reading Program is “Color Our World!” We invite you to embark on a journey of art and creativity, celebrating the countless ways in which art enriches our lives. Summer Reading starts May 23, 2025, and ends August 15, 2025. You can sign up starting May 23 for free at any branch location or online.
Why Participate in Summer Reading?
1. Prevent Summer Learning Loss: Children can lose academic skills over the summer break. Reading helps them retain knowledge and stay sharp for the upcoming school year. It also improves vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills, all of which are essential for academic success. Books transport children to
different worlds, sparking their imaginations and encouraging creative thinking.
2. Bond as Family: Summer reading can be a fun family activity. Siouxland Libraries offers four age categories, allowing the whole family to participate.
3. Win Prizes: Participants can earn prizes by completing challenges and reaching reading milestones.
4. Beat Boredom: Reading provides an engaging way to spend summer days, keeping kids entertained and preventing boredom. The Summer Reading Program exposes children to various genres and authors, helping them discover new interests. l
Visit siouxlandlib.org for all the details about this year’s program, including events, prizes, resources, and more!

Outdoor Campus Sioux Falls
David Parker
Director of the Outdoor Campus
Can my child volunteer at The Outdoor Campus?
Yes! The Outdoor Campus has a rich history of volunteerism, starting with 50 volunteers back in 1997. Since then, we have had over 1,200 volunteers give over 125,000 hours of service!
For youth volunteers, we ask that they be at least 12 years old and commit to 25 hours of service in a year.
Choosing to volunteer at the Campus means:
- Meeting new people with a similar interest in the outdoors
- Developing new skills and the opportunity to attend educational trainings
- Sharing your love of the outdoors with others
All Outdoor Campus Volunteers receive a uniform shirt and name tag and become part of our volunteer award program, which is based on service hours.

How do I prepare my child for overnight camp?
Overnight camp allows kids to begin being independent and is great for bonding with other kids.
Start with a one or two-night camp. Do some practice nights at a friend’s house or grandparents’ house. Set your child up for success. Read a book about going to camp. Get them excited about the things they will be doing at camp. Let them know they can call if they need to. Avoid telling them you will come get them if they get homesick (this almost guarantees they will get homesick). Allow them to help pack and talk about camp as you are packing.
Tell them how proud you are that they are growing up!
Move U KristinWittmayer Pediatric Occupational Therapist & Director
Would your child benefit from OT?
As a cash-based pediatric occupational therapist specializing in sensory processing disorders, I often guide parents to trust their instincts when they notice their child struggling in daily life. Since every child is unique, here are some key signs that they may benefit from occupational therapy:
1. Sensory Processing Difficulties
2. Emotional & Social Difficulties
3. Motor Coordination & Body Awareness Issues
4. Daily Life & Independence Struggles
5. Challenging Behaviors
If any of these challenges sound familiar, reach out to us for a FREE 20-minute consult. Our goal is to empower you as a parent and create a therapy plan that supports your child’s development.

Creating a Summer of Connection
How We Plan, Prioritize, and Balance It All
Summer is a season of sunshine, adventure, and, let’s be honest—organized chaos! As a mom of ten, I know firsthand how quickly those precious months fly by. Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to a meaningful summer isn’t packing the calendar with activities but being intentional about what truly matters: family, fun, and flexibility.
For our family, summer is about making memories, slowing down (when we can!), and keeping things simple yet purposeful. Here’s a peek into how we plan our summers, prioritize family time, and balance all the moving parts to create a season filled with joy!
1. How We Plan Our Summers
The key to a smooth summer? A little planning—with plenty of room for spontaneity! At the start of the season, we sit down as a family and brainstorm what we’d love to do. From big adventures to small, simple joys (think backyard picnics or a family movie night), we make a list of must-dos and nice-to-dos.
I also love to find events that are going on in our community. I always leave extra room in our schedule to jump on last-minute community happenings.
When it comes to meals, I plan every week rather than day by day. I list out the meals we have available, including super-easy options for our nights at the ballpark or when we’re off cheering at sports events. This helps us avoid the last-minute scramble!
2. Prioritizing Family Time
It’s so easy to fill the summer with activities—but we’ve found that when we say “yes” to everything, we miss out on the simple joy of being together. Plus, it’s stressful when the schedule is too full. That’s why we intentionally block off time for family connection.
Whether it’s a weekly family adventure, a nightly walk, or slow mornings with pancakes and board games, we make sure that summer isn’t just about doing but about being together. Even when our kids have different schedules, carving out dedicated family time keeps us connected and anchored.
3. Balancing All the Moving Parts
know exactly why they’re going off. This technique has been incredibly helpful in juggling our various activities.
“... we sit down as a family and brainstorm what we’d love to do. From big adventures to small, simple joys (think backyard picnics or a family movie night), we make a list of must-dos and nice-to-dos.
With a big family, managing our day is a bit like conducting a fun orchestra! I rely on time blocking to keep everything on track. My phone’s calendar is my secret weapon! I set alarms with clear labels so I
Our mornings often kick off with time outside. In the afternoons, we love heading to the pool and carving out some quiet time to recharge. Then, our evenings are typically filled with a sporting event—cheering, laughing, and creating unforgettable family memories. Time blocking ensures that every part of our day gets special attention!
Summer isn’t about having the busiest schedule—it’s about creating a season of connection, rest, and joy. By planning intentionally, protecting family time, and embracing a structured yet flexible schedule, we make the most of these fleeting months while keeping our hearts (and sanity!) in check.
So, here’s to a summer filled with sunshine, laughter, and moments that matter most! l

More Than a Sport
All American Gymnastics Academy
Abel and Sabrina first signed their daughter, Lynnleigh, up for introductory preschool classes at All American Gymnastics Academy. Like many parents of preschoolers, they were looking for a fun activity for their daughter to participate in. Over three years later, they have not only discovered a great physical sport but also an incredible community and growth in Lynnleigh that goes far beyond the gym.
Lynnleigh is now 6 years old and has worked her way up to the Level 3 Development program at All American. This program requires dedication, discipline, and a passion for gymnastics. Qualities like dedication and discipline might not be the first thing to come to mind when you think of a young child, but mom Sabrina credits All American for helping Lynnleigh grow into who she is today. “Her time at All-American has helped her in many ways
in life. It has helped enhance her problem-solving abilities, increased her self-confidence, shown her discipline and teamwork, and given her positive social interactions. She has grown as a person and as a gymnast.”
The culture of All American Gymnastics Academy is something that Lynnleigh and her family have come to cherish. Sabrina and Abel are especially thankful
American is for everyone! The entire family enjoys participating in classes at every level.
for the coaches’ support and dedication to each of their gymnasts! Gymnastics is a very physical sport, and All American prioritizes safety, proper training, and only moving onto new skills once ready. Sabrina says that the coaches at All American are incredible: “They really do everything they can to not only connect with your child but also understand who each child is as a gymnast. Their encouragement and guidance for Lynnleigh has been truly amazing.”
Regarding competitions, the coaches are there to help their athletes every step of the way. Learning how to deal well with success and disappointment is an important life lesson. Sabrina and Abel are grateful that Lynnleigh is able to learn this from her coaches at each competition. “They are there for your child, whether it is your child’s best meet or worst. They are there to help show how the children can have confidence in themselves even if things do not go their way,” shares Sabrina.
Gymnastics at All American is not only something that Lynnleigh loves, but it’s become a place that has made an impact on her in and out of the gym. Every parent wants to see their child become strong, confident, determined, and self-motivated. It’s even better when they get to have that growth while having fun!
