pregnancy by Lornell E. Hansen II, MD Physicians Vein Clinics
Pregnancy and Varicose Veins:
Relief for new and expecting moms Q: What causes varicose veins during pregnancy?
Q: How can I prevent varicose veins during pregnancy?
A: Many women first develop varicose veins, or find that they get worse during pregnancy. As your uterus expands, pressure on your legs increase, which can then accelerate the formation of varicose veins.
A: If you, or other members of your family have had varicose veins, use preventive measures that are safe during pregnancy. Consider wearing compression hose, exercise regularly to improve leg strength and circulation of your veins and avoid prolonged standing, or sitting.
Q: What are the symptoms of varicose veins? A: Symptoms of varicose veins include leg aching, heaviness, muscle cramping, ankle or leg swelling, itching and burning, and skin discoloration. As these veins progress, some females will develop twisted, bulging veins along the thighs and lower legs. Varicose veins also become worse with age, weight gain and each subsequent pregnancy.
Q: What problems can occur if varicose veins are left untreated? A: It is not recommended to do treatment during pregnancy, but if varicose veins are visible and you plan to have more children, you do not have to wait until your last pregnancy for proper treatment. Treatment can be done between pregnancies to relieve discomfort and if your varicose veins do not go away after the baby has arrived, you can then decide to have them medically treated, or removed depending on the severity. While varicose veins are unlikely to put you, or your baby at risk, it’s beneficial to know what to expect beforehand. Contact a vein specialist to learn more about medical and cosmetic treatment options for this type of vein disorder. n

pregnancy by Jillian Nedved, PA-C of Independent Women’s Care, PC
Sunscreen Use During Pregnancy Sun protection is important for everyone, but especially while you are pregnant. The hormones of pregnancy make your skin more susceptible to changes from the sun. The cells in your skin, called melanocytes are more receptive to the sun’s rays and can cause darkening to occur faster. This affects everything from freckles to a chloasma/ melasma (aka pregnancy mask of darkened skin in the face). When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it has a SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. Next, look at the ingredients list. Choose a physical blocking sunscreen, which uses ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These do not absorb into the skin as much as chemical sunscreens. Once absorbed, these chemicals can enter the blood stream and cross the placenta to baby.
An example of a physical sunscreen is one that is SPF 60+ and uses both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Chemicals to avoid:
In addition to sunscreens, you want to make sure you are practicing other safe sun habits. Clothing and sunglasses can provide some sun protection. Hats with wide brims and umbrellas can help with sun shading. It is also a good idea to avoid being in the sun between the times of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as this is when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Getting in the habit of safe sun practices now will show your baby how important skin protection is right from the start. n

Once you have selected your sunscreen, you want to make sure you are applying it properly. It is important to reapply sunscreen every one to two hours. Applications more often than that may be needed if you are sweating, or swimming.

Torticollis
Does your baby have it? What can you do about it? Infant torticollis diagnoses are on the rise and early detection is critical for effective treatment. Torticollis is any abnormal posturing of the head and/or neck caused by neck tightness and weakness. Parents usually notice their baby prefers to look to one side. In addition, a head tilt (ear to shoulder) may also be observed. These may be very subtle and usually require the skills of a pediatric physical therapist to determine if your baby has torticollis. If left untreated, torticollis can affect a child’s development, facial alignment and even their vision. The earlier the treatment for torticollis is initiated, the quicker it may be resolved. If the physical therapist determines that your baby has torticollis, they may recommend treatment and will educate you on various exercises, stretches and repositioning techniques. the home exercise program prescribed by the physical therapist is a key component to the resolution of torticollis. In the meantime, there are things you can do before you schedule your appointment: • T UMMY TIME, TUMMY TIME, TUMMY TIME! Work up to a minimum of one hour of tummy time each day while encouraging your baby to look up. This can be done in multiple increments throughout the day. • I f you notice your baby has a preference to only look one way, encourage looking the opposite way. • L imit use of “containers” such as car seats, support seats, bouncy chairs, swings, etc. Floor time is best to allow your baby to explore and move. n

Supplies: paper, markers, tape, bendy straws, pencil
Step ONE Decorate your paper. We decided to go with a lucky St. Patrick’s theme.
Step TWO Roll paper around a pencil and tape in place to secure.
Step THREE Remove pencil from the roll and pinch one end of the rocket and seal closed with tape.
Step FOUR Insert a bendy straw into the open end and blow to see your lucky rockets take flight.
Taking it further: Set up an indoor mini golf course using different items in your home as holes/targets. Keep track of how many rocket “blast offs” it takes to hit each target. Take turns and have kids write down each family member’s score. This helps kids work on turn taking, counting, adding and writing.

Camp is meant to be an opportunity to grow as a social being. Growth can be a bit intimidating. If your child expresses some nerves, or maybe you’re feeling your own set of nerves about them being away, here are some tips to help you both feel confident.
Photo courtesy of Camp Bring It On
Feeling Confident at Camp Create an opportunity to go on a sleepover with a friend, or maybe even connect with another child who will be at their camp. As you practice, focus on what you know for sure. Avoid assumptions about how things will feel, or seem and discuss what the cabins will look like, what kind of meals there will be, or who their counselor will be. If you do not know things for sure and create pictures in his/her mind of how things will be and then they are very different, that can cause its own set of worries about what else will not be the same as they thought.
If your child expresses that she’s concerned or hesitant, avoid telling them not to worry. It’s already happening. Their feelings are not wrong. Help her to talk through what she feels. Avoid focusing on what causes her to have anxious feelings. Avoid asking leadIf you are anxious Share your own positive experiences ing questions like, “Are you nervous or lead them to a feeling, away from home, at camp and on about swimming?” ask open-ended your child will think this sleepovers. Be willing to discuss questions like, “How are you feelis the way they are what she’ll be doing, like sleeping in ing about swimming?” My advice supposed to feel. a cabin and what it is like to sleep in always includes this message: If you a bunk bed, what it was like to try new are anxious or lead them to a feeling, food, how you got along with different your child will think this is the way they people at camp and in your cabin, being outare supposed to feel. Your child loves, trusts side with insects and even how you learned to be and respects your feelings. If you feel worried or respectful of nature. Share that you felt some worries at fearful, they will get the message saying that is the aptimes also and that simply meant you were about to learn propriate response. something new. And perhaps that going to camp helped Practice how camp will be. If your child has never been, you learn to worry a little bit less because you learned how or had a sleepover, he might be nervous about the idea. to be okay in new situations. n

Summer Reading Keeping Up on
Here’s one of my favorite tips for parents: Studies have proven that kids enjoy reading more when they’re able to pick out the reading materials themselves. Our family certainly proves that point! Summer has always been the season when my kids can read to their heart’s content — and exactly what they want to read. It’s also a great opportunity for kids (and their parents) to pick something that they want to learn just for the sake of knowing it. This year my daughter had some major motivation pushing her to finish third grade - the stack of Diary of a Wimpy Kid books on the floor next to her bed. Because she wasn’t allowed to crack the first cover until she was done with school, she powered through exams knowing her old friends Greg, Rodrick, Susan and Manny were waiting for her on the other side. Next on her summer

reading list is the Fudge Series by Judy Blume, so she’ll have great ways to handle her younger brother like Peter does in the series. The other thing she’s looking forward to learning this summer is hip-hop dancing, having fun with friends and swimming. (Not at the same time, I hope.) I can relate to having fun with friends and swimming - as for the hip hop dancing —well, who doesn’t want to be able to do that? My son’s 2nd grade reading list ranges from “Adventures of a Taxi Dog” to “You Can’t Eat Your Chickenpox.” And he’s even contemplating reading one of my favorites, “Charlotte’s Web.” His learning goal for this summer? Robotics! When I was his age, I didn’t even know what that was. Maybe that will be my goal next summer. n

Experience Funding the
of a Lifetime
Given my experience, I look forward to next summer when my daughter is able to go for the first time. I’m sure she will have the same experience. My only concern is the cost. For a week at camp, we are looking at $350, or more. While that’s no small amount for most families, it does not mean your children have to go without the experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the financial obligation of summer camps. Plan ahead and save: We have a full year until we register my daughter for camp. By being intentional now, we only need to set aside $30 per month to have camp paid for. That’s less than $10 per week, which is quite doable for most families. Ask about help: If the cost of camp is going to be a challenge, talk to the camp, or other organizations that share the same

values. Scholarship funds are often available for those that need them. While it may not cover the whole cost, it can help make camp much more affordable. Involve your children: While kids don’t need to be burdened with all of the details of a household budget, they can start to learn money skills even at an early age. Last summer, while planning a trip to the Omaha Zoo, my 5-year-old son talked us into packing sandwiches for the car ride rather than stopping to buy supper. He pointed out that it would help us save money to use at the zoo. Talk with your kids about the cost. Do they need spending money for camp? Perhaps that is their contribution to save up for. Help them develop healthy financial habits now, so that they can provide the same opportunities for their children in the future. Camp can be a life-changing experience for a child. With the variety out there, there is a camp for every child. With a little planning and communication, camp doesn’t need to be an overwhelming financial burden for your family. n

I cherish the days I spent each summer at camp at Lake Okoboji. For six years, I spent a week there as a camper and have spent at least as many more as a counselor, or staff. I still have good friends that are involved in the camp. It is something I will always hold special.

Keeping Your Kids Hydrated, Healthy and Safe at Summer Camp
family
No SWEAT!
You’ve done your homework. You’ve looked through all the booklets, brochures, and websites and pinpointed the right summer camp for your kid. Regardless of your choice, your child will likely spend more time outdoors, exposed to the sun, heat and humidity, while participating in various levels of physical activity. You will remind your child to use sunscreen and stay protected while outside; but don’t forget another important step to help your child have fun and stay safe in the summer heat – hydration. Even moderate levels of physical activity mixed with high temperatures and sun exposure can prompt significant water loss through sweating, especially when the humidity is high. If these sweat losses are not adequately offset each day by drinking water regularly, your child can become significantly dehydrated. While most young children will not sweat enough to prompt a large body-water deficit in a couple of hours, after a long day of activity in the heat, the level of dehydration can become more significant. And if this pattern is repeated over several days, the situation gets much worse.
The early stages of dehydration are relatively mild and may even go unnoticed. However, as the level of dehydration progressively increases, your child will have less energy, a lower ability to concentrate and most certainly will not be enjoying camp activities as much. Extensive levels of dehydration during physical activity can lead to heat exhaustion and physical collapse. And while ample hydration does not guarantee that a young body will not overheat during vigorous exercise, or other activity in hot conditions, it certainly decreases the risk.
45
So what can you do to help your child stay healthy and safe in the heat? While any camp you choose should have staff providing adequate opportunities for rest, cooling down and rehydration, it’s important to educate your child on his or her responsibilities. First, it is important to know the warning signs of significant dehydration: • Feeling tired or weak • Crankiness • Dry mouth and lips • Thirst • Headache • Feeling dizzy or confused Tell your child to pay attention to his or her own body and also watch for these signs in others. If one or more of these signs or symptoms is present, or if your child or someone else just doesn’t feel right, it’s time to speak up. A qualified staff member can assess the situation and take the right action. Make sure your child knows that, during breaks, it’s best to move to a cooler spot, inside or out, grab water or other appropriate fluids and rehydrate. If it is an overnight camp, be sure to emphasize to your child to eat well and drink plenty of “good” fluids (especially water) with each meal. These simple hydration practices should be part of the usual routine at home. Instilling a few good habits now – before the bags are even packed – will help your child to stay hydrated, healthy, happy and safe at camp – just the way you and your child want it to be. n

I learned pretty quickly when I had my daughter that life doesn’t slow down just because you had a baby! If anything, it feels like it speeds up! And wearing the hat of farmer and mommy means I have a lot to think about when growing the food that ends up on our table.
One American farmer today raises enough food to feed about 155 people. On our farm, we are always looking at new research and technology to help us raise more food using fewer resources and leaving a smaller environmental footprint.
As a mom, farmer and CommonGround volunteer, one question I get asked a lot about is the use of crop protection products, such as pesticides and insecticides. I definitely understand why people worry about possible crop protection residue on their food. Because it’s such a hot topic right now, it can seem completely overwhelming. On our farm, we do use crop protection products, but let me tell you, it’s
something we take very seriously. I feed my daughter the same food that ends up in the grocery store and I would never do anything that would have the potential to jeopardize her health, or have negative effects.
We have regulations in place through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We follow those guidelines on our farm to ensure we are providing a safe and healthy product. Before we can even use crop protection products on our farm, we must go through strict testing and become certified. There are also so many new technologies in farming, like precision agriculture, that help farmers apply the exact amount of crop protection products needed for their crops. We never apply more than what is needed to keep our crops healthy and keep the environment safe. Not to mention, crop protection products are expensive, and it wouldn’t make sense for us financially to over apply. I’m excited to share some of my family’s favorite recipes with you in this issue. A big part of my cooking is done for my farmer, and I really enjoy coming up with new meals that everyone can enjoy! After I got married, I joined in the cooking rotation on our farm. This means cooking the noon meal and sometimes the meal at night. For most of the year, I prepare that meal in my home and feed my guys at my kitchen table.
But, farmers don’t always sit down and take an hour break in the middle of the day. Sometimes I need quick meals that are easy to prepare and easy to deliver. The crockpot should be every busy mom’s best friend. There are so many versatile recipes for a crockpot. And they can easily be prepared the night before, or in the morning before work. I have been known to have all of my crockpots up and running for a meal and it makes clean up amazingly easy! During the busy times of year, I plan my meals months in advance. It makes grocery shopping easy and makes it easier for me if I need to be in the tractor all day. These recipes are great for the working mom, or the mom who spends her days chasing after toddlers! Both are hard work and anything to make our lives easier is a win-win in my book!

Fun Ways to Learn About the Farm such as planting seeds, pulling weeds and sweeping for bugs provides a valuable connection to the land and offers a different learning perspective. When children understand that farmers eat the food they produce and like all other people, have families and care about their work, they are developing connections to the farmers and to the food they grow. When asked, “Where does your food come from?” children may have a wide range of answers: the fridge, the grocery store, Grandma’s house and the farm? For kids who haven’t grown up on a farm, it’s easy to think that food starts in grocery stores and ends up on the kitchen table. Spending time now teaching young children about agriculture will help them develop healthy relationships with food by learning about where and how food is grown on farms. Encouraging hands-on activities

GET DIRTY There are all kinds of hands-on activities that you and your kids can do to learn more about agriculture. This is a fun way to explain topics, get the kids involved and it can often double as snack time. Some websites to visit for ideas include: • www.agclassroom.org • www.letsmove.gov/eat-healthy • www.choosemyplate.gov/kids

Encourage your kids to take what they’ve learned and tell other people! If you’re a parent leading these activities at home, encourage your kids to tell their friends, their teachers and other family members. Even after your lesson is over, make connections from everyday life to agriculture. They’re everywhere! As kids grow older and begin to think about a career, remind them that agriculture offers a wide variety of careers including farming, animal science, engineering, building construction and food science. n
GET CONNECTED Pictures and videos offer a great opportunity to give young children a real life view of a farm, or agriculture operation without leaving your house. The website www. neok12.com features videos, presentations and games reviewed by K-12 teachers on a variety of agriculture related topics including the History of Agriculture, A Day on the Wheat Harvest and From the Farm to the Fridge.
TAKE A TRIP Verbal lessons and interactive activities can be fun, but seeing agriculture first-hand is almost unbeatable. This could be as simple as taking a virtual farm tour, visiting

Investigate your pantry! Take three items from your cupboards and discuss the origins of each item. Ask your kids to consider questions such as, “Where did this come from?” “What is this made of?” “How many people were involved in producing this?” Then, do your research on the Internet, or at the library to discover the answers!

Summer Safe Keeping
Scrapes/Cuts
Bug Bites
Wear appropriate protective gear such as helmets and elbow/knee pads when riding bikes, scooters or skateboards. Don’t wear shorts for baseball, tee-ball or softball where there is sliding and diving.
Use bug spray, especially during early morning and evening hours. If your child will be significantly exposed to bugs, have him or her wear pants, long sleeves and a cap. At the end of the day, check for ticks and remove them promptly.
For treatment, clean the wound with soap and warm water. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide because it is painful and could slow healing. Once dry, put a pea-size dollop of topical ointment on the cut before placing a bandage. An over-the-counter child’s ibuprofen is OK if your child is in pain.

Because kids are more likely to spend summer outdoors, their chances of having an injury also increase. Here is some advice on how to prevent and handle common summer injuries.

Over-the-counter topical creams and ointments can alleviate minor itching. If the itching is extreme, be sure to use an oral diphenhydramine, such a children’s Benadryl.
See a doctor if the area shows signs of infection, the cut is bigger than one centimeter, or if it won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of applied pressure.
If your child is allergic to bees, wasps, or hornets, try to supervise outside play. Have an epinephrine auto injector (epi-pen) ready in case he or she is stung. It may save your child’s life.
Breaks/Sprains
Sunburn
Breaks and sprains can also be avoided by wearing appropriate gear outside. In addition, only use trampolines if protective walls are attached.
While outside, always use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. No sunscreen is truly waterproof, so you’ll have to reapply it every one to two hours.”
If your child has a sprain, reduce swelling by applying an ice pack for 20 minutes three to five times per day, for two days. Ways to reduce pain include giving an over-the-counter ibuprofen, wrapping the injured body part in sports tape, or using a pre-made splint found in most stores. Keep the injury elevated; this also decreases swelling.
If your family is spending time near water, pack an umbrella, sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats. Dress your children in lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants. Keep babies under six months out of the sun.
Seek medical attention if your child cannot move, or bear weight on the injured body part, or if swelling and/or pain persist for more than a few days.
If your child gets sunburned, apply a cool compress. Over-thecounter creams and lotions can relieve pain and itching.
Be sure to call your doctor, or local emergency department (if necessary) if you have questions about home treatment, or whether to seek medical care. n
