Snoddy headlined this year’s Exceptional Women of Color Awards & Expo.

I’m not usually one to tell a self-made billionaire what to do, but Oprah might want to watch her back, ‘cause Kiko is out in these streets!

Kiko Davis Snoddy was the keynote speaker at this fall’s 15th annual Exceptional Women Of Color (EWOC) Awards & Expo, which was held on September 13. Attendees were very lucky to be in her orbit, as she’s a global entrepreneur who runs the Donald Davis Living Trust, which is the majority shareholder of the seventh largest Black owned bank in the United States. Snoddy is also the managing director at Groovesville Productions & Publishing LLC, which controls the Grammy Award-winning music catalog of multiple gold and platinum selling records.

Snoddy gave a dynamic presentation that’s sure to stick with EWOC attendees for some time.

Just before the event started, she told me that, even with all of the demands on her time, she couldn’t resist the chance to join this year’s EWOC.

“I was inspired by the mission of the EWOC conference, which recognizes women throughout Northern California for accomplishments in their community and professional affiliations. They commonly go unrecognized for their endeavors,” Snoddy said via email. “I personally believe that it’s important to celebrate our unsung heroes and sheroes, and help in some way to support their efforts. They are the foundation of the collective success for women of color everywhere!”

“The most rewarding part of the work I do is seeing the positive impact it has on families financially,” Snoddy said, upon being asked about what keeps her motivated, “whether it’s helping a family purchase a home, start, or expand a business or financing college education. Oftentimes, you can see the immediate results of financial independence. It is empowering for the entire community.”

“I had (what I considered to be) the deal of a lifetime,” Snoddy confided. “For more than two years, I heavily invested significant time and finances into an effort that fell apart right before my eyes. It was devastating.”

“Afterwards, I was counseled on potentially resurrecting this deal. However, doing so would have ultimately compromised my principles,” Snoddy continued. “Prayer led me to walk away. Shortly after, an even better opportunity presented itself. So, the lesson in that is learning to release it, even when you have given it your all.”

“Not every opportunity is a win and not every deal is meant for you,” Snoddy sagely concluded.

NOT EVERY

OPPORTUNITY IS A WIN AND NOT EVERY DEAL IS MEANT FOR YOU

I learned years ago that no one gets to the top of the mountain, as Snoddy has, without a little help, encouragement, and shared wisdom from those who have been there. Having the ear of someone so accomplished led me to ask Snoddy about the best piece of professional advice she’s ever received.

“[I received some] timeless advice from an early mentor who is still a part of my advisory team,” Snoddy recalled. “Never allow yourself to lose passion for growth or learning. Life is a journey best enjoyed seeking wisdom and applying it. Success is enjoying the process no matter what the outcome may be. Professional success must not come at the cost of your personal values. I learned if you want success in your professional life, it begins with personal perspective and purposed alignment.”

“Alignment.” It’s a great word, and a lot of thought leaders use it, but this writer believes that it’s often misused, can be quite elusive, and often comes only after overcoming setbacks. As such, I decided to ask Snoddy to recall her biggest professional setback, and share what she’d learned from it.

Prayer notwithstanding, it had to have taken a lot of courage on Snoddy’s part to walk away from that deal and into what God had clearly intended for her. That makes sense, as she is known for saying that courage is her “superpower.”

As this writer is a Superman fanatic, I had to ask her about that, and about her own version of “kryptonite.”

“Courage is my superpower because it’s the one source I can tap to move past my fears,” Snoddy said.

Those who experienced her at this year’s EWOC Awards & Expo might be surprised by that statement, as Snoddy doesn’t seem to have any fears!

“If we are not afraid, we can be confident enough to accomplish many things without restriction,” Snoddy elaborated. “I cultivate courage by using daily self-affirmations, prayer, meditation, and exercise. Each of these routines allows me the opportunity to draw strength, and ultimately courage, that help to empower me through long days. There are days that my courage is tested, but over time it’s become second nature — my courage kicks in instinctively!”

And Snoddy’s kryptonite?

“It is trying to do too much or taking on more than I should,” Snoddy admitted. “I want to be as productive and help as many people as possible. I

can’t be as effective if I spread myself too thin. So, I have learned to set boundaries, not only for others, but myself included.”

Since the theme of this year’s EWOC was Women of Color Changing the Future in Attaining Wealth, I asked Snoddy about the advice that she might give women who are building their personal financial portfolios. Specifically, I wondered what she might say to women who might not be as far along as she is, or as far along as they might want to be.

“It’s never too late to grow your wealth. There is no specific age limit. What matters is that you start,” Snoddy said. “Set clear financial goals, long and short term. Determine what accomplishing your goals will provide for you. Work on a plan or strategy, and implement it! Don’t neglect the importance of reading, researching, and networking in your industry, and never stop improving or refining your strategy.”

“There may be challenges and possible delays from time to time,” Snoddy added. “However, in those moments you will gain valuable knowledge, build relationships, and the capacity to propel you forward.”

Forward propulsion is something that Snoddy knows a lot about, as she’s faced her share of setbacks, not the least of them being the death of her first husband. She channeled her grief into co-authoring her first book, A Widow’s Resilience: Wisdom Keys for Moving Forward in Life and Love After Death Do Us Part.

Snoddy told me that co-writing the book was very cathartic.

“I could write down my emotions much easier than I could verbalize them,” Snoddy said. “For those who haven’t read the book, [I’ve been told that] it’s very inspirational and empowering. No matter what type of trauma you may experience in life, such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, a bad breakup, a major financial loss, or severe illness, know that you still can get through it and move past it.”

“Also, be kind to yourself,” Snoddy added. “Allow yourself the necessary time to feel the pain and move through this process in a manner that best suits you. For me it was writing. Whatever it is, just do it. In time you will find pieces of joy inching their way back into your life.”

As I read about the “joy” that inched back into Snoddy’s life, I recalled her earlier statement about her having learned that not every “deal” was for her. I decided to end our conversation by asking the entrepreneur to talk about a “deal” that is clearly hers: her marriage to her current husband, Anthony L. Snoddy. I also wondered about the couple’s children.

“Our marriage is built on faith and favor. It’s almost like a fairytale,” Snoddy gushed. “Not only is [David] my king and I his queen, [but] he is also my biggest supporter, protector, and best friend. We support each other and commit wholeheartedly to the love we share for one another and our blended family. His motto is there is nothing we can’t accomplish professionally or personally as a couple. He reminds me daily, in so many touching ways, how blessed we are that God allowed us to find love and each other. He is a wonderful, intelligent, debonaire, very thoughtful man who is a huge romantic.”

“Our children are our world, and watching them learn and grow truly warms our hearts,” Snoddy added. “They keep us young at heart and filled with pride and admiration. We are truly blessed.” n

Who have you lost from tobacco use? It is sad to say, but we all know someone who smoked, chewed and even vaped and then later became ill. How many of us have taken care of sick relatives or how long have they suffered from lung diseases like COPD or Emphysema, which last for decades, as we watch them slowly suffocate because they can’t breathe?

Now close your eyes and imagine a world without harmful tobacco! Our loved ones would most likely still be with us. Instead of tobacco, store shelves would have healthier foods or other products we use. We don’t have to imagine it anymore. We can act now and eliminate tobacco being sold so our children and future generations don’t have to imagine this world.

Let’s join cities like Beverly Hills, Brookline, Massachusetts, and the country of New Zealand who already did it.

Ashley Bennett, a native of Mobile, Alabama, was nurtured in the vibrant environment of Sacramento, California, specifically Del Paso Heights. For the past 18 years, she has been married to John Bennett Jr. Together, they are blessed with a resplendent 10-year-old daughter named Gianna. Professionally, Ashley serves as the Committee Secretary for the esteemed California State Assembly’s Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy committee—an endeavor that she finds thoroughly enriching.

Ashley is a zealous entrepreneur presiding over a diversified portfolio of small enterprises encompassing event coordination, notarial services, and hairstyling. As a young woman hailing from a minority background, she is intrinsically committed to effecting positive transformations in the lives of others, regardless of their choices’ nature—be they auspicious or otherwise. The tenet that has guided her life is encapsulated in the adage: “While one’s upbringing shapes an individual, it need not dictate one’s trajectory or statistical fate within that environment.” Her ardor for aiding youth, particularly young women and men, in their journey toward selfactualization runs deep. Whether achieved through mentorship or even a seemingly innocuous conversation, Ashley considers her mission accomplished if she is able to illuminate the uncharted possibilities of life for another. An additional facet of her enthusiasm manifests through her partnership with Nova Brookins-Holly and Tanisha Paiste. Together, they give back to the community through the medium of dance. In her view, dance is an art form that transcends boundaries, allowing individuals of any age to articulate themselves without fear of censure.

During her leisure time, Ashley relishes quality time with family, orchestrating familial gatherings, guiding young minority women in carving out their vocational paths, and channeling her creativity through the manipulation of her Cricut crafting apparatus.

Hero: My mother Annette Malone is my hero. She has raised me to be strong, gentle, kind, and genuine, and most importantly how to forgive. My mom has shown me how to love not only myself, but others as well. She has taught me that respect should always be given despite how others may treat you. My mommy taught me how to be the best version of myself I can be, and for that my mom is my hero!

Hero: My mama. She’s a survivor who raised three young children on her own as a young widow. She faced racism and adversity as a young white woman with three black-bi-racial babies. She surrounded her children around culture, community and people who looked like her children. She put herself through college and modeled how to be an independent woman. Mama is tough as nails yet has a giving heart, the best Grammie to her grandchildren and one of my biggest cheerleaders in my life.

Best life experience: Being a mom to my daughter and son and an auntie to my nieces and nephews has been my best life experience. The children in my life inspire me to be a better/kinder person and to keep learning and growing. I am extremely proud of the wonderful humans they have become. My biggest blessing call me mama. I am also known as Mama Sandie or (Mrs. Sandie) to a host of young people in my community and the communities I work within. This brings me joy.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I grew up spending endless hours in the kitchen with my Nana. She was a home baker who was gifted with making the most beautiful wedding cakes, pastries, etc. She passed on her gift to me. I had some formal pastry and cake decorating training and then launched a small business called Savory sweets by Sandie. I have since volunteered my time offering free pastry and decorating classes to underserved communities. It brings me joy seeing black boys and girls who look like me baking and decorating cakes and the pride displayed after a finished product. Joy!

Slogan you live by: Kindness Matters.

Who was your mentor and how have they helped you? MeLisa Adams mentored me in my spiritual walk, encouraged me to face my fears, challenged me, and offered unconditional support while I was a young mother and wife many moons ago. I will be forever grateful for her

investment of time, love, sisterhood, prayers and her keep it real get it together approach. Everyone needs a Mama MeLisa in their life.

Mariana Corona Sabeniano is a proud product of public education and a first-generation college graduate. Following the June 2022 election, she began her service on the Sacramento County Board of Education, representing Area 2, which includes the communities of Antelope, Del Paso Heights, Elverta, Gardenland, Hagginwood, North and South Natomas, North Sacramento, Rio Linda, and Robla.

Professionally, Mariana as a Chief of Staff in the California State Senate. Mariana has over fifteen years of public service, working on legislation, and advancing policy on a variety of issues, including education, health, higher education, women’s issues, etc.

She currently serves as an appointee on the Sacramento County Planning Commission and as Vice President of the Natomas Schools Foundation. She enjoys giving back to her alma mater, Sacramento State, through her involvement on the Sacramento State Alumni Association, Board of Directors. Mariana also serves on the steering committee for the Sacramento Latina Leaders Network, which provides leadership development opportunities to Latina Leaders. Furthermore, Mariana’s passion for civic and political engagement led her to co-found the Latinx Young Democrats of Sacramento County.

Mariana grew up in Arbuckle, California with her five siblings to immigrant parents from Mexico. Mariana is the first one in her family to attend and graduate from college. She earned her BA from Sacramento State and a Masters of Science in Law from McGeorge School of Law.

Mariana and her husband, Ranier live in Natomas.

Dr. Lisa Daniels is a multi-talented individual with a diverse background in education, photojournalism, and news production. Her interest in military history was sparked by her family connection, discovering that her grandmother worked as a “riveter” on the USS Franklin Roosevelt at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. This revelation led her to delve into the African-American military experience, and she realized that information on this topic was scarce.

Driven by her passion for history and a desire to fill this informational gap, Dr. Daniels conceived the Unsung Heroes The Living History Project. The project aims to serve as a valuable resource for military buffs, educators, and the general public, providing insights and documentation on the often-overlooked African-American military experience.

Throughout her endeavor, Dr. Daniels received support from notable figures in the field, including Andrew Carroll (known for his work on War Letters), Yvonne Latty (author of We Were There and In Conflict), the late Gen. Ezell Ware (who wrote By Freedom Bound), and Allene Carter (author of Honoring Sgt. Carter). Additionally, veterans from across the nation have also backed her efforts.

Beyond her work on the Unsung Heroes Living History Project, Dr. Daniels holds the position of an Ethnic Studies Professor at Sacramento City College. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and showcasing her passion for music by DJing at various venues throughout California. Notably, she is also a loving mother to her two children, Logan and Alex.

Dr. Daniels’ dedication to preserving the African-American military experience and her commitment to education and storytelling make her a remarkable figure in her field. Her efforts in creating a comprehensive resource like the Unsung Heroes Living History Project will undoubtedly contribute to a deeper understanding of military history and the contributions of African-Americans in the Armed Forces.

Lori Fuller currently serves as a K-14 Academic Preparation Manager with University of California, Office of the President. In this role Lori is responsible for managing college preparatory programs for underrepresented students in California. With over 22 years of higher education experience, she is skilled in strategic planning, academic advising, program and project development, as well as assessment, evaluation, and resource management. As a long-standing member of the UC community, she is very active with various organizations and committees, and continuously finds ways to bring local community resources into the university setting. Some of Lori’s strongest talents are her creativity, and ability to foster relationships among students, faculty, staff, administrators, and families, in order to create partnerships that aide in the success of students.

Lori is a passionate and goal-oriented leader, who understands and values the importance of education and community partnerships, as it relates to equity, access, retention, and student-centered success programs. Rita Gallardo Good is the Senior Associate Vice President of the Office of Public Affairs and Advocacy at Sacramento State. Her goals in her role are to grow the positive reputation of Sacramento State, improve access for the diverse communities in the Sacramento region, and serve as a resource for student success.

Pecan Pie Cheesecake

Ingredients

CHEESECAKE

Cooking spray

3 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened

1 c. packed brown sugar

3 large eggs

1/4 c. sour cream

2 tbsp. all-purpose flour

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1/4 tsp. kosher salt

CRUST

1 sleeve graham crackers, finely crushed

5 tbsp. butter, melted

1/4 c. packed brown sugar

Pinch of kosher salt

PECAN PIE TOPPING

4 tbsp. butter

1/2 c. packed brown sugar

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/4 c. heavy cream

1 3/4 c. whole or chopped pecans

Pinch of kosher salt

STEP 1: Preheat oven to 325º and grease an 8” or 9” springform pan with cooking spray. Make cheesecake filling: In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in a stand mixer using the paddle attachment), beat cream cheese and brown sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, then sour cream, flour, vanilla, and salt.

STEP 2: Make crust: In a large bowl, mix together graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, brown sugar, and salt. Press mixture into prepared pan.

STEP 3: Pour filling over crust. Wrap bottom of pan in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. (If you want to bake the cheesecake in a water bath, wrap bottom of pan and place in a deep baking pan. Pour in enough boiling water to come up halfway in the baking pan.) Bake until center of cheesecake only slightly jiggles, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Turn off heat, prop open oven door, and let cheesecake cool in oven, 1 hour, then remove aluminum foil and refrigerate cheesecake in pan until firm, at least 5 hours and up to overnight.

STEP 4: Before serving, make pecan pie topping: In a nonstick skillet over low heat, melt butter and brown sugar until bubbly (keep heat low to avoid burning butter). Stir in cinnamon, heavy cream, pecans, and salt until completely coated, then remove from heat and let cool and slightly thicken. (You can make the topping up to an hour in advance and keep at room temperature; don’t refrigerate as the butter will solidify.)

STEP 5: Release springform pan from cheesecake and spoon over cooled pecan pie topping. Serve.

Born and raised in Illinois, Dr. Tetteh earned her Medical Degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine - Rockford, then moved to Torrance, California for Pediatrics residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Caring for children and advocating for their health is Dr. Beatrice Tetteh’s focus as a pediatrician. Her clinical interests in childhood obesity, advocacy, and education are intertwined into her role as a physician. During residency she cultivated a car seat loan program for patients discharged home in spica casts, a special type

of hip and leg cast. Community Advocacy was her area of focus as a Primary Care Outcomes Research fellow through the Center for Healthcare Research and Policy at UC Davis. Her Masters of Public Health project regarding physical education requirements in Sacramento schools culminated in a platform presentation at the 2013 Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in Washington D.C.

She partnered with the University of California Davis (UC Davis) Niños Sanos/Healthy Kids Childhood Obesity Prevention program to address parents demand for education in healthy eating. To encourage a love of reading and literacy, she implemented Reach Out and Read programs in the office as well as arranged for books from the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library to be made available for families.

In September 2019, Dr. Tetteh opened Tetteh Pediatric Health, a solo pediatrician practice in South Sacramento providing care for newborns through young adults, where she educates patients and their families to make good treatment decisions for a healthy future.

She is on the Board of Dreamers for 916 Ink, a local non-profit organization empowering youth through creative writing, and a member of the Sutter Independent Physicians Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

She came to SMUD after a two and a half year tenure as the Director for the Office of Equity and Human Rights at the City of Portland and Special Advisor to the Mayor on issues of racial justice. She previously served as Director for the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the Oregon Department of Education. Her work is specifically focused on anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion, culturally responsive practice, intersectionality, eradicating anti-Black racism, and working to eliminate systems of oppression.

CALIFORNIA BLACK MEDIA, ETHNIC MEDIA SERVICES HOST AWARD SHOW AND CONFERENCE

The Ethnic Media Conference Awards and Expo took place at the Kimpton-Sawyer Hotel in downtown Sacramento on Aug. 31. The event celebrated the work of journalists, podcasters, photojournalists, and investigative reporters whose contributions have been published by media outlets serving ethnic audiences across California.

The awards ceremony, sponsored by Ethnic Media Services and California Black Media, recognized winners selected from over 300 entries republished between January 1 and December 31, 2022.

“We had more awards, we had more submissions than ever, and we had judges saying this was the best we’ve ever seen. “Now, that is against the odds of remarkable,” said Sandy Close, Ethnic Media Services (EMS) Executive Director.

In all, 26 writers, communications specialists, educators, playwrights, and publishers from across the state served as the judges. The award categories were: Breaking news, commentaries, explanatory analyses, feature reports, and photography.

SACRAMENTO’S COMMITMENT TO A TOBACCO-FREE FUTURE

In a resounding call for action, Sacramento recently played host to an inspiring press conference led by Saving Our Legacy, African Americans for Smoke Free Safe Places – the SOL Project, spotlighting critical strides in tobacco prevention. On November 7, at 9:30 AM, advocates convened virtually, passionately discussing progress, challenges, and the crucial shift towards achieving the ‘tobacco endgame.’

Vice Mayor Eric Guerra, Sacramento City Council’s advocate for Tobacco Prevention, lent his voice to the cause, emphasizing the community’s pivotal role in embracing robust practices for safeguarding public health. “Quitting smoking is challenging individually, but together, we can make a difference,” Guerra remarked, echoing the collective spirit driving the pursuit of a tobacco-free future.

The City of Sacramento has been advancing steadily toward the ‘tobacco endgame’ by implementing measures such as banning flavored tobacco products and requiring retailers to obtain licenses for selling tobacco. These policy pathways serve as pillars for constructing a healthier environment, shielding residents from the adverse effects of tobacco consumption.

Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, an ardent supporter of tobacco prevention, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the community’s power to curtail tobacco use and expressing pride in collaborating with Vice Mayor Guerra and the SOL Project for a healthier Sacramento.

Distinguished speakers at the Endgame Educational Press Conference included Twlia Laster, Project Director at SOL Project; Ruth E. Malone, RN, PhD Professor of Nursing and Health Policy at UC San Francisco; Marissa Bashore, Chairperson of the Greater Sacramento Smoke and Tobacco Free Coalition; Carol McGruder, Co-Chair of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council; Carol Maytum, Project Director at Action on Smoking and Health Advancing Momentum for a Tobacco Free California; Kimberly Bankston-Lee, Senior Program Director at SOL Project; and Journey

The urgency of the ‘tobacco endgame’ stems from sobering statistics: tobacco, the only legal consumer product claiming half of its users’ lives, leads to over 8 million deaths annually worldwide, with 48,000 African American deaths per year, disproportionately affecting low and middle-income communities. Moreover, emerging tobacco products like e-cigarettes, cigarillos, hookah, and smokeless tobacco pose new threats by addicting a fresh generation to nicotine and tobacco.

Ruth Malone, a leading voice in nursing and health policy, emphasized California’s leadership role in combatting the tobacco epidemic, asserting that Sacramento’s strides send a powerful message to the tobacco industry: no more leniency.

The endgame isn’t about prohibition but aims to halt the sale and promotion of addictive and lethal commercial tobacco products. Globally, this strategy involves heavy restrictions on product availability and a gradual phase-out, prioritizing community engagement and education before policy alterations.

Examples of these policies include eliminating the sale of commercial tobacco, creating buffer zones around schools, raising licensing costs, lowering nicotine content in cigarettes, mandating plain packaging, and eliminating tobacco advertising and sponsorships.
