WEEKEND JUST FOR partner pampering Whether it's a bit of pampering or practising your putting that turns you on, here's a weekend made in couple heaven. Story by Nicole Stevens
is late afternoon at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on the Sunshine Coast and a harmless lizard basks on the side of the outdoor jacuzzi, enjoying the lapping of warm water as it spills over the edge. I dip my toes in where water plunges into the pool and contemplate sharing the spa with my four-legged friend. Around us, a rustling breeze tussles tall gum trees, while birds go about their day, chirping merrily. Surrounded by nature, we eye each other off. On this occasion, nature wins. My love of the outdoors aside, I beat a retreat indoors to soak instead in the hot tub inside the pampered cocoon that is The Spa's ladies-only lounge. There's no shortage of indulgence during an hour or two relaxing at the largest day spa in the southern hemisphere. As a guest at the resort, I found

myself returning to The Spa time and time again to relax and unwind. The pleasant scented air that hits you as you step across the threshold is a clear indication you have left the world behind and entered a sanctuary of calm. After a multi-million dollar rejuvenation in 2008, the 750-square-metre complex features men's and ladies' lounges with spa, steam, sauna and relaxation rooms, an outdoor spa, an aqua-aerobics pool, a 25-metre lap pool, hair salon and, of course, treatment rooms. It's open to all resort guests over the age of 16, making it a delightful adult sanctuary in the middle of the sprawling 150-hectare grounds of the Hyatt Regency. The Spa is one of only a handful in Australia that use Natura Bisse products from Barcelona, a brand favoured by celebrities Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker. The signature Natura Bisse

Diamond facial, which incorporates Shiatsu massage techniques and an Ice-Lift mask using plant DNA, is a highlight. There are also Sound Therapy treatment rooms, which offer an unusual sensory experience. Gentle harmonic vibrations are transferred directly through the body in combination with colour therapy to create a deep state of relaxation. It is best enjoyed while allowing the mind to wander, free of big city tensions, while low frequency sound waves reverberate around the room. But be warned, you may fall asleep. Later, I enjoy an indulgence of a different kind in a glass of French champagne before dinner at the Italianinspired restaurant Bruschetta where chef de cuisine Wayne Mackie holds court. Naturally, there's bruschetta on the menu, one a tasty traditional version and the other made with chorizo, onion jam, rocket, parmesan and olive oil. For the main course, it is hard to go past the braised goat pappardelle, with Noosa reds (local tomatoes), olives and

garlic. Then again, the fettucini with sand crab, virgin olive oil, chilli lemon zest and parsley is equally mouthwatering. The rich Tiramisu dessert confirms this is no ordinary Italian, but infinitely more enjoyable. Fortunately, the Hyatt's vast open spaces offer plenty of opportunity to walk, cycle, play golf or tennis to counter such indulgence. There's also private access to Coolum Beach and transport around the resort is by foot, bicycle, or on the shuttle buggy. Speaking of exercise, golfers will get
plenty during a few rounds on the 72-par championship golf course, which is home to Australia's PGA tournament every year. In February, guests at Hyatt Regency Coolum will be able to play the course for free, but only until 20 February. Hyatt Regency Coolum has a Pampers and Champers package, including a spa treatment, two-course meal and accommodation in a two-bedroom Woodland Villa, starting from $275 per person for three sharing, perfect for a girls weekend away. Or there's a Couples Indulgence package which includes accommodation in a King Room with sparkling wine and chocolates on arrival from $410 per room. Complimentary golf clinic lessons are also included Monday to Friday, and each adult can choose an option of unlimited golf and use of a shared motorised golf cart or a 60-minute spa treatment per night of booking.
