Vmware vSphere4 – PowerPath/VE Install

Summary: This document outlines the standard process for installing the PowerPath/VE on a ESX4.x host. It is assumed that the user will have access to copy and install the software on the ESX4.x host. It is also assumed that the ESX4 hosts are licensed with Enterprise Plus licenses. Requirements: •

vSphere Management Assistant (vMA – Vmware Appliance)

Enterprise Plus - ESX4 hosts

Instructions:

Install: Install PowerPath/VE using the VMware vCLI tool and vMA. Note: Both the root and non-root user can install PowerPath/VE. 1. Import the vMA Appliance into vCenter if it is not already and logon to it. 2. Copy the PowerPath/VE package EMCPower.VMWARE.5.4.zip onto the remote vMA machine from which you are running the VMware vCLI tool. 3. On the remote machine running vCLI, type the following to install the PowerPath/VE package: • On Linux, enter: # vihostupdate --server <IP address or host name> --install --bundle=EMCPower.VMWARE.5.4.<bbb>.zip • On Windows, go to the installation path C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin> and enter: TheHyperadvisor.com

# vihostupdate.pl --server <IP address or host name> --install --bundle=EMCPower.VMWARE.5.4.<bbb>.zip where IP address or Fully Qualified Domain Name identifies the ESX host onto which you are installing PowerPath/VE, location is the directory where PowerPath/VE is installed on the remote host, and bbb is the PowerPath/VE build number. 4. Enter the username and password when prompted. The installation may take a few minutes. The following output appears: “The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.” Installation of EMC RTOOLS: (Windows Server Install) 5. Unzip the Windows package file. It contains an .exe file named EMCPower.RTOOLS.5.4.Windows.x86_32.bxxx.exe where bxxx is the build number. For example, EMCPower.RTOOLS.5.4.Windows.x86_32.b268.exe 6. Double-click on the .exe file. An Install Shield wizard, which is used for the PowerPath/VE remote CLI installation, appears. 7. Various screens appear during the Install Shield wizard installation. For all fields, click Next for the default values. 8. The installation location screen appears. The Install Shield wizard lists a default folder. • If you want the RTOOLS package installed in the default location, click Next. • If you want to install the RTOOLS package in a location other than the default location: a. Click Change located at the right. b. Browse to the desired installation location. c. Click Next. 9. Click Install. 10. The PowerPath/VE remote CLI is installed at the location you specified. 11. Log out and log back in to the remote session to include the rpowermt directory in the default path.

Licensing PowerPath/VE: 1. Type “rpowermt host=<ip address of esx host> check_registration” 2. Type a passphrase for the rpowermt lockbox. Upon entering the first rpowermt command, you are prompted to create an rpowermt lockbox. The passphrase requires a minimum of eight characters and must contain a lowercase, uppercase, numeric, and special character. The following output appears: Confirm passphrase: Use P@ssW0rd ◦ Retype the rpowermt lockbox passphrase. The following output appears. Enter server username: Use the root esx host account. 3. Type the ESX host username. The following output appears: Enter server password: 4. Type the ESX host password. 5. Take note of the “Host ID” which is to be used on PowerLink to activate/create license key. 6. Take note of the “License search path:” this is were you will have to place the license key file after it's created. 7. Create and placed the license key into the “License search path:” on the rpowermt server. 8. Type “rpowermt host=<ip address of esx host> register” 9. Output should show “PowerPath license is registered.” 10. Verify the configuration by going into vCenter, select the ESX host under Inventory > Hosts and Clusters then click the Configuration tab. 11. Click the Storage Adapter link and you should see that the Owner is PowerPath and that the status for all paths are Active. Example shown below. TheHyperadvisor.com

Removal: 1. Check the package installed on the ESX host by typing: # vihostupdate --query --server <IP address or host name> 2. Enter the username and password as prompted. The following output appears: ---------Bulletin ID--------- -----Installed--------------------Summary----------------EMC-PP5.4.0.00.00-bbb <TIMESTAMP> PowerPath for ESX where <bbb> is the PowerPath/VE build number. 3. Remove the PowerPath/VE package by typing the following command: # vihostupdate --remove --bulletin EMC-PP5.4.0.00.00-<bbb> --server <IP address or host name> where <bbb> is the current build number and <server number> is the host number. The removal may take a few minutes. Enter the username and password as prompted. The following output appears: “Removed bulletin from host successfully.� 4. Reboot the ESX host.
