THE NEED FOR LOW ENERGY LIGHTING SOLUTIONS
‘Fuel costs are up by almost 10% and UK businesses are experiencing above-inflation increase in core business costs as fuel costs grow at 9.62% faster than the current rate of inflation which stands at 3.4%’ Royal Bank of Scotland Research December 2011 “These are core costs which have a direct impact on price competitiveness, and businesses remain focused on how to tackle mounting energy costs.” Peter Russel, RBS Corporate and Institutional Banking “Lighting is essential for carrying out daily business activity but it can account for up to 40% of a company’s total electricity bill. Even making small adjustments to lighting can significantly improve the working environment and, at the same time, save money.” Carbon Trust “The Induction Lighting Company (The ILC) low energy lighting solutions can decrease lighting energy costs and carbon emissions by over 50%, equivalent to 20% of the energy bill and often can provide investment pay backs over 1 to 2 years and returns on investment of 3 to 4 often over the lifetime of the fluorescent tube system”. The Induction Lighting Company “A 20% cut in energy costs represents the same bottom line benefit as a 5% increase in sales” Carbon Trust.

Your risk - our opinion. The argument for ‘going green’ is simply unassailable – on the basis of cost alone. But we don’t think you should have to ‘take a risk’.
We can save you money – let us prove it Most of our clients recover the cost of the product within the warranty period that we offer – at today’s energy prices. Many of our clients report their electricity price in the 8p to 9p per kWh range. Some pay as much as 16p per kWh…..and ever increasing. In as little as five years time, we may regard 20p per kWh as a very good price. Keeping lighting energy costs in control and the lights on is a real industry need. The need to reduce energy consumption is obvious. Converting to low energy lighting provides a ‘quick win’, with viable payback periods. We look past today to see where you will be tomorrow and provide site specific solutions that can help take you there. As the cost of energy rises, the need to conserve becomes a top priority. We strive to provide you with the most extensive list of possibilities.
So the bottom line is simple. Energy is expensive and is going to get a lot more expensive – so use less of it. A 5ft T8 tube, running for 14 hours a day every day, will cost around £35 a year in energy costs alone based only on £0.098 per KWH Converting that same 5ft light to T5 or LCD using our retro fit solutions will reduce the cost of the energy used to around £17 a year – a saving of c.51%. In the above example payback is in less than 2 years but the solution will continue to save money over subsequent years. Our LCD tube has 30,000 hours first time to failure, and in the above example, providing 6 years warranted operation and a saving of £102. The warranty on our solutions guarantees that you will save money, realise a viable payback period, and secure a significant Return on Investment.

Lumen Maintenance refers to how a lamp maintains its light output over its lifetime. Both T5 and T5 high output (T5 HO) lamps maintain a higher light output than T12 and most traditional T8 fluorescent lamps. Manufacturers claim that T5 and T5 HO lamps retain more than 95% of light output at 8,000 burning hours (40% of rated average life). An improved phosphor coating reduces mercury absorption, which is one of the main causes of lamp lumen depreciation leading to a higher lumen maintenance value. Also, because the T5 is smaller in diameter, it has a much smaller surface area. Manufacturers use only tri-phosphors in the T5, compared to the T8 and T12, in which there may be a mix of tri-phosphors with halo-phosphors. The schematic below illustrates lumen maintenance curves for T5, T8, and T12 lamps - T12 lamps are labelled as "CW/HO," which stands for cool white high output.
Lamp manufacturers claim that T5 high output (T5 HO) lamps last 20,000 hours (Osram; GE Lighting). This average rated lamp life is measured at temperatures between 15째C (59째F) and 50째C (122째F) and is designated as the number of hours after which 50% of the lamps fail. Short burning cycles (frequent switching on and off) reduce lamp life. Use of ballasts that do not meet lamp requirements set forth by the lamp manufacturers may also result in reduced lamp life.

T5 Lifetimes The T5 options are mainly differentiated by manufacturers’ claims of operating lifetime estimates, which, subject to interpretation suggest T8 – 10,000 hours T5 Tri-phosphates – 10,000 / 15,000 hours T5 Osram OH Smartlux – 15,000 / 20,000 hours T5 GE Starcoat – 20,000 / 30,000 hours Lifetime is represented by a statistical analysis where the manufacturer’s claims of lifetime are estimated from the failure of a whole batch of light tubes designated as the number of hours after which 50% of the lamps fail. T8 Fluorescent These now traditional tubes have an estimated lifetime of 10,000 hours T5 Tri-phosphates These now popular replacement tubes have an improved lifetime over the T8 with manufacturer’s claims of 10,000 / 15,000 hours. Osram T5 HO Smartlux A new generation of T5 tube with high light output and extended lifetime to 15,000 hours – see Osram schematic – offering low mercury content (<5mg),efficacy of 95 Lm/W at operating temperature of 35 C, and 12% lumen depreciation after 10,000 hours.

GE Starcoat T5 The new generation of T5 tube from GE with a Starcoat Alumina reflective coating which increases the efficiency of the Tri-phosphor coating providing higher light output and further extended lifetime to 20,000 hours – see schematic – offering low mercury content (<3mg), efficacy of 100 Lm/W at operating temperature of 35 C, and 8% lumen depreciation after 10,000 hours, 12% after 30,000 hours.
Courtesy GE
GE Starcoat T5 – lifetime depends on light on / light off cycle reducing by over 15% from a 12 hour cycle to a 3 hour cycle. Lifetime has to be extrapolated downwards when using the Starcoat with a PIR motion detector situation for heavy footfall of traffic.

LCD T8 Fluorescent Lifetimes Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes The ILC LCD low energy tubes have a “first time to failure” life time of 30,000 hours and would be preferred in normal operating circumstances where access and maintenance is a problem. Operating lifetimes are greater than 50,000 hours. The premium price being offset by long life reduced maintenance and reduced running costs – the lowest life time costs of all current linear fluorescent tubes. LED T8 and T5 Lifetimes Light Emitting Diodes (LED) tubes At this time (January 2013) The ILC have a portfolio of options, including LED, but do not recommend the use of LED fluorescent tubes. Lifetime claims of LED tubes are >35,000 hours (Truwin) but, in general, life time is markedly dependant on a number of factors, mainly related to heat dissipation, including but not exclusive to:Material of the end cap Body material for heat dissipation of which an aluminium alloy body performs best. LED surface mount, and LED type – in a quality product Epistar chips are common and Cree chips are optional at a much increased price. Any build up of heat effects the LED chips and the driver (ballast) and can markedly decrease lifetime and performance.

PRODUCT DETAILS – LCD Due to its efficiency, Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) technology has expanded into room, office, corridor, and other tube lighting environments. Costs are competitive to those of fluorescent bulbs, but with several advantages. The light emitted is easier on the eyes, bulbs turn on instantly to full output and are also dimmable. The ILC range of CCFLs can be dimmed to 2 reduced levels by a simple flick of the switch or circuitry, each step using reduced wattage to deliver consistent light output. The tabulation below provides the reduced wattage levels and a comparison to a similar light output T8 fluorescent and the average energy savings. Image

LCD – CCFL Benefits Why Make The Switch to The ILC Low Fat Solution using Low Energy LCD – CCFL Tube ? Impressive Energy Savings, high frequency operation combined with new generation LCD tube provides savings in excess of 50% Rapid payback, as the cost of converting existing luminaires is a fraction of a complete light fitting replacement. Long life lamps with quality light superior to LED tubes and traditional lighting. Reduces maintenance by over 30% the high frequency integral ballast, combined with the new generation LCD tube offers 50,000 hour service life, 3 to 4 times that of a standard luminaire fitting with conventional tubes Hassle-free installation, simply take out the starter and plug the tube into the existing luminaire. The cold cathode CCFL tube has high general colour index (up to 85Ra), offering comparable light output and colour rendering to existing T8/T12 tubes, replacement T5 fluorescents, and LED tubes. The CCFL tube simply plugs into an existing luminaire, transforming it electronically from conventional control gear to a new generation high frequency luminaire without removing the existing magnetic ballast. The old ballast is made dormant by the CCFL tube’s converter's control circuit. Does NOT need expensive re-wiring around the existing ballast. The CCFL tube has integral ballast, control gear, and unique energy level instant switch and offers the low energy option to a conventional T8/T12 tubes,T5 replacements, and LED tubes.
