Pillar is Genderless
In the Philippine context, we often view fathers as pillars of the household, while mothers, on the otherhand, areseenaslights.Butthis notion is absurd; it is a mere social constructrootedintheinfluencethat apatriarchalsocietyinstills.Thetables have turned nowadays, though, becausewomendon’tsettleforwhat theywerepaintedas;theynowactas both pillars and lights to their families

WorldHealthOrganization(WHO) revealed that the country has about 15 million solo parents, of whom 95%, or more than 14 million, are women From this picture, we can asserthowvitaltheroleofwomenis, especially in providing for the fundamental needs of her child or children
However, a stigma still arises in the abovementioned scenario because single parents, particularly mothers, arepronetoshame.Onewouldsay, “Why did you have a baby if you aren’t ready to raise a child?” or worse, some are being slut-shamed, "Malandikakasi"
Denyitornot, mostofushaveheard ofthosedegradingnotionsalready If not, here’s a real-life scenario taken from an article published by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting Inaninterviewwithsingle mothers, one mom shared that they are still facing the stigma of being a single parent Maria, 30, mentioned how the father of his child avoided herwhenshewaspregnant Thesame scenario happened to Sheila, 31, in whichsherecalledthatherboyfriend wasnowheretobefoundwhenshe disclosedherpregnancytohim
It is just saddening to witness that most of the blame when one gets pregnantisdirectedatwomen, andin the worst case, they are being abandoned they

In this issue, we are not trying to romanticize the struggles mothers face, butwearetryingto acknowled ge them On the issue of single mothers, wehopeto see more progresson laws that will help this sector, aside from therecently implement ed RA 11861, or the Expanded Solo Parents’ WelfareLaw
More than this, we stand firm in debunking the notion that mothers are only for inside-house responsibilities, becausethemerefactthattheystriveto get employed is already a manifestation that being a pillar of the household is genderless
