RENWICK RE_RUIN FALL 2011: DESIGN 401
ORIGINAL RUIN
WITH THE REALIZED DESIGNS FOR ROOSEVELT ISLAND’S FDR MEMORIAL BY KAHN AND NO DEFINITIVE RESOLUTION FOR THE ORIGINAL RENWICK RUINS, THE QUESTION OF WHAT THE GOALS WERE FOR THE RUIN AND ITS DIRECT INTERACTION WITH THE MEMORIAL HAVE TO BE ASKED. SINCE THE RUIN HAS BEEN LABELED AS A ‘LANDMARKED RUIN’ CERTAIN CONDITIONS MUST BE MET. THE PROJECT INSTEAD CREATED A VISITORS CENTER BY CLOAKING THE RUIN AND REDISTRIBUTING IT. REVEALING SHADOWS

SPRING 2012: DESIGN 402 THE DIASPORA OF MUSIC
THE DIASPORA OF MUSIC
MOCADA THE CENTER FOR MODERN AFRICAN DIASPORAN ART, LOCATED IN BROOKLYN HAS ONLY A SMALL SETUP AND SMALL FOOTING WITHIN THE LARGER COMMUNITY. THIS PROJECT LOOKS AT THE UNDOUBTING INFLUENCE OF ARFICAN CULTURE ONTO WESTERN MUSIC BY CREATING A CENTER FOR VARIOUS PERFORMANCE SPACES AND HALLS. IT LOOKS AT WESTERN MUSIC FROM THE START OF THE DIASPORA OF AFRICANS INTO THE AMERICAS VIA SLAVERY AND FOLLOW THE MUSICAL JOURNEY AND EVOLUTION OF THE MUSIC CREATED. THE BUILDING ACTS AS A LARGE EMBODIMENT OF THIS IDEA, LETTING SPACES BLEED VISUAULLY AND EVEN AUDIBLY FROM SMALL SCALE PERSONAL PERFORMANCES TO GRAND LARGE PERFORMANCE HALLS THAT EVEN CONNECT WITH THE LARGER URBAN AND SURROUNDING FABRIC BLEEDING INTO THE CULTURE OF THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN.

WITHIN RIO DE JANIERO, BRAZIL, THE DUMONT AIRPORT IS SEEING A SUDDEN INCREASE IN TRAFFIC AS IT TRIES TO MEET THE CITY’S GROWING DEMAND. TODAY, THE AIRPORT DOES NOT HAVE THE PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE TO HANDLE SUCH A GROWTH. THE PROJECT AIMS TO CAPTURE RIO’S COLORFUL CULTURE WHILE PROVIDING THE SPACE AND FUNCTIONS FOR A GROWING CITY WHILE CREATING A POINT OF ATTRACTION ON RIO’S FAR SIDE.

RISING TIDE NATURAL MARKET IS THE FIRST HEALTH FOOD STORE IN THE NORTHEAST AND HAS BEEN SINCE 1976. RECENTLY, THEY PASSED THEIR 35TH ANNIVERSARY AND WAS REALIZING THEY WERE IN DESPARATE NEED OF MODERNIZING AND UPGRADING THE AGING STORE. THE FIRST RENNOVATION BEGAN IN THE STORE’S SMALL OFFICE FOR MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTING. THE SPACE WAS DULL-LIGHT, CLUTTERED, AND IN THE BASEMENT. THE NEW DESIGN FOR THE OFFICE TRIED TO BRING THE OUTDOORS IN BY CREATING A UNIQUE LIGHTING WALL DESIGN THAT WOULD MIMIC NATURAL LIGHT BY DIFFUSING REFLECTED LIGHT AROUND THE ENTIRE ROOM. SIMPLE, SOFT, AND CLEAN FOR A PROPER WORKING ENIVORNMENT.
