Revels 2024
Though the pandemic and Project Pegasus created a hiatus in our revelling in recent years, apart from a series of ‘Master H meets…’ and the hugely compelling ‘Dial Medicine for Murder’, I am delighted to announce our new plans for Revels devised with the help of Master Stephen Simblet and Oscar Davies (Bar Liaison Committee), modern day ‘Princes of Misrule’ (to borrow the 15th century title given to those appointed by each Inn to lead Revels).
To reinvigorate the tradition of Revels, on 23 April we will begin the first of two or three annual film nights focusing on films with legal themes and on 17 July, we will be hosting ‘A Night at the Musicals’. I hope that as many of you as possible will get involved, either by attending these events or by performing a number from your favourite musical.
Historically, Revels were regarded as a period of extravagant entertainment and wild partying, though the events generally followed a set, traditional sequence. Members of the Inn who refused to become involved in the events were fined as a punishment – beware!
The nature of the Revels often varied depending on the rank of the member. The young students were noted to have taken part in energetic and intimate dances with women, such as the galliard, and exuberant singing, whilst the more senior Benchers had more formal, traditional dances and sang psalms. Other entertainments included feasts and mock trials.
The Revels attracted an audience of wellconnected people of high rank. Of note, Queen Elizabeth I attended one Revels session at The Inner Temple where she noted the dancing ability of Christopher Hatton, whom she later appointed Lord Chancellor of England.
That said, the quality of Revels seems to have declined in the 17th century and into the early 18th century. Indeed, the last are thought to have been those held in 1733.
However, the Revels were revived at the Inns in the mid-20th century by Master Hubert Monroe (Middle Temple Bencher) and have since provided seasonal entertainment in the form of sketches, songs and jokes.
In more recent times, The Inner Temple enjoyed a very lucrative period of Revels
under the guidance of Master Tom Shields, and my immediate predecessor, Master Tom Kinninmont, did much to build on that foundation.
Though we cannot promise the extravaganzas of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, and (you’ll be pleased to know) we have no powers to levy fines for not taking part, we hope you will join in the fun. If any member of the Inn, whether Bencher, Member of Hall, Pupil or Student, is interested in taking part in a ‘Night at the Musicals’, please register your interest by emailing revels@innertemple.org.uk

Sub-Treasurers of The
Inner Temple
Ever wondered why Inner Temple sticks to the title ‘Sub-Treasurer’, when all the other Inns have opted for ‘Under Treasurer’. Why was a traditionally militarised zone demilitarised? Were relationships between Sub-Treasurers and their Treasurers always trouble-free? The Sub-Treasurer, Greg Dorey CVO, looks back at his predecessors over the centuries and attempts to answer some of these questions.

Inner Temple eLearning Hub
In 2023, the Education and Training Department embarked on a collaborative project with The Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) to build a platform for the Inn to host its online educational courses and content. The project entailed the creation of an entirely bespoke Virtual Learning Environment for the Inn, as well as the migration of existing content from different platforms. Work on building the new platform was completed in December 2023, and The Inner Temple eLearning Hub was launched in January 2024.
The first course to go live on the new eLearning Hub was the Inn’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training course.
Which, prior to its relaunch, was reviewed and refreshed and is now being rolled out to selected members. The eLearning Hub will constantly evolve and grow with the development and addition of new courses and content over the coming years. In March 2024, the Advocacy and Ethics Courses for New Practitioners will be launched, and the Pupils Advocacy Course will follow in September 2024.
We are excited to grow the content that will be hosted on the eLearning hub and are certain that it will become an invaluable resource for all members, from students on their journey to the Bar to practising barristers.

Alliums
Each year, I excitedly await the blooming purple ‘fireworks’ of Alliums. I feel that they create the first dramatic explosion of colour and texture, with a noticeable change to the height of the borders.
Alliums have long been a decorative feature at The Inner Temple Garden, adding a fun element with their drumsticks of various sizes, shapes and tones, as well as providing early season food sources for pollinators. I love alliums for their ability to take centre stage effortlessly in the borders, while at the same time interconnecting a border, weaving between the emerging herbaceous plants.
Using Alliums in the Garden
Most Allium species are found in the summer baked plains of Turkey, the Middle East, and Central Asia, which helps explain their preference for a sunny site and welldrained soil.
Hardy and reliable, the majority of the alliums will thrive year after year. When clumps become too congested, they can simply be dug up, separated and replanted. Our favourites for repeating without lifting include: ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Summer Drummer’ and ‘Universe’. The showy decorative flowers heads, which are clusters of individual florets, are followed by long-lasting attractive seedheads, that can also be used in dried flower arrangements. My favourite type for drying is Allium christophii.
With our ethos of working towards sustainable principles, alliums are appreciated for reliably repeating with low water requirements and little green waste output at the end of their growing season; in addition to their stunning flowers providing nectar for a host of pollinators.
Open Days
Our upcoming weekend garden open days on 25 May and 9 June provide the perfect occasions to see the alliums in the garden. Come and find out more about all the different varieties we grow at The Inner Temple.
