TI editorial FRONT PAGE ILLUSTRATION STORY
It is through the Revised Student Manual of 2019 that the University-Based Scholarship Program was first implemented. This program, which was pushed earnestly by the previous University Student Council Federations, grants incentives ranging from Php1,000 to Php2,000 to performing students, journalists, leaders, athletes, and students with disabilities. As we commit ourselves to academics, student publication, student governance, or athletics, this opportunity should have at least given us a tap on the back, providing us a temporary consolation for the duties and responsibilities we fulfill. But, unfortunately, our campus is not big enough, at least in terms of population, to enjoy the privilege that has long been bestowed on us through paper. What did happen?
It is always how we become voice for the voiceless, and disturb undisturbed.theIt is always how we rattle them with our why’s, when’s, and how’s when others are simply silent about it. “
This is surely the response we receive when we ask our parents to give us a sum of money to purchase a new fashion trend, food, gadgets for online classes, or an allowance for a field trip, especially when our family is on the verge of financial crisis. This seems to be the same response when we also ask for the administration of the incentives, which have long been implemented yet take a long time for us to enjoy.

The Unheard Tantrums
Campus Office of Student Development and Welfare (OSDW) Coordinator, Dr. Maria Donna B. Macadangdang, also shared that a list of applicants for the first semester of the said school year was already prepared for the release of incentives totaling to Php72,000 last semester, but the budget was allocated to the preparation of limited face-to-face classes which kicked-off last April.
“We want it, but our budget can’t.”
Can we do something?
“Nagreready nang mag-release ang accounting office nung pera, pero dahil dumating na naman ang limited face-to-face classes, madami na namang budget ang nagamit,” the campus OSDW coordinator said. This is the reason why no matter how we dig in with this matter indirectly to the authorities when we see other campuses calling for applications for the said scholarship in social media, our campus could hardly fit into our general fund the budget of the incentives due to more urgent priorities, exacerbated by delayed UniFAST subsidy release and tight funding dictated by our population, which is penultimate among the satellite campuses of the university. The campus is only like our parents, whom we ask to buy us something, but needs to allot the meager budget they have to more important priorities, such as meals three times a day, payment for bills, and our needs for schooling.
The answer is urging for transparency. While we cannot disturb the allotment of budget, it is our right to know where the Free Higher Education Fund is spent to. We deserve to know what is its status and the issues grounding its release. With the interview conducted by the Innovator with the Campus Accounting Office and Campus OSDW, we have become updated with the expenses obtained from the available fund. Through this, the accounting office revealed an available fund amounting to Php4 million, which can be used now for the release of the incentives, as confirmed by the campus accountant.Itisalways how we become voice for the voiceless, and disturb the undisturbed. It is always how we rattle them with our why’s, when’s, and how’s when others are simply silent aboutParentsit. may get irritated with the tantrums of their children, but it is how they can recognize and address their needs and wants. However, we are not kids anymore who can just cry when we need something. We are mature enough to understand things in difficult situations, but brave enough to stand when we know something wrong is going on.
As explained by Campus Accountant, Mrs. Winibeth S. Sinco, during an interview with The Innovator, the non-release of incentives in the previous school years is due to limited funds caused by the low enrolment rate of the campus as rippled by the K-12 program and higher education’s curriculum transition period during the early implementation of the said scholarship and to budget allocations prioritized by the campus during the university’s shift to flexible learning classes. “Sa utilities, pambayad ng kuryente, internet, gasolina at sahod ng part-time at administrative personnel na hindi permanente lang talaga nag-rerevolve yung pera natin at that time. Hindi nga sila makapagrequest ng supplies nila eh,” she said, recalling the time when the campus was experiencing tight budget allocations due to the delayed release of the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) subsidy.
Just to be clear, I’m not here to discuss the controversial film nor the political disputes surrounding it. I am here to give my take on the difference between history and tsismis, sharing what I have learned from Readings
Is history like tsismis?
On July 2, actress Ella Cruz stirred the social media uproaring after speaking up about playing the role of Irene Marcos, the third child of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, in the controversial film ‘Maid in Malacañang’, claiming history the same as “Historytsismis.islike tsimis. It is filtered and dagdag na rin, so hindi natin alam what is real history. Andoon na iyong idea, pero may mga bias talaga. As long as we’re here alive at may kanya-kanyang opinion, I respect everyone’s opinion,” she said.

Veritaserum Unlike history, which was subjected to deliberate evaluative procedures, tsismis is simply unverified information relayed by gossipy people without careful assessment of its veracity. Despite lack of factuality, the narrative they disseminate aims to sensationalize information just to entertain other people.

While emphasizing this statement as only her opinion, this may affect people’s perspectives on history, especially those who were not given the opportunity to engage in academic learning. This also demeans the profession of historians who put their efforts into studying all available facts in human experiences to arrive at the historical information we are learning today.
I remember the days when I exerted a lot of efforts memorizing the dates and prominent names in Philippine history from the pre-hispanic period until the Philippines acquired its freedom from the Western occupants, just to impress my teacher by getting high scores amid the obvious pure recall exam.Iremember the week when I was a representative of my school in the History Quiz Bee, devoting my time both day and night, getting excused from my academic classes and obligations, just to review all my compilation of facts from the history of my hometown, Lal-lo, up to my region, Cagayan Valley, and even taking a glimpse of the story of the Philippines, concealed from the old parchments and worn-out pamphlets, passed down by the history wizards in my Alma Mater.
I remember the semester when we had to crumble our time, studying at our own pace and learning style, the Readings in Philippine History and Life and Works of Rizal despite the limited source of learning material and facilitation from our instructor due to distance learning. But after all these years exerting my hardwork to study these bulky, lengthy, and sometimes tiresome readings in history, a celebrity suddenly popped out and degraded the value and quality of history by equating it to a “chismis”-a rumor, hearsay, gossip, or whatever you call it, being relayed by a “Marites” whom Gen-Zs refer to as a gossiper in modern times.

“Walang maloloko kung walang magpapaloko.”
This statement seems to be a thread-bare expression that people habitually enunciate in situations involving a cheating or betrayal instances. With this, I come to reflect and build this question, “is this always applicable to all scenario?”Weareliving in this digital era where almost everyone has access to different technological tools and are users of media particularly the most prominent-the social media. It cannot be denied that this platform brings a great deal of advantages to people especially to those business owners as they widely used this in promoting their distinct products and services.
Business owners opt to utilize the social media particularly Facebook in advertising their merchandise because of its countless users, living in different places, whom they could possibly encourage to purchase their offers.
personally visited one of these food hubs and experienced their services. As I sat and waited for my order, I have observed that there were buyers who are not Lal-loquenos but avid supporters of their product. Driven by extreme curiosity, I also tried to interview random consumers present in that place and asked them where they live, how they knew the product and its location. Strikingly, they answered me that they came from varied municipalities including Gattaran, Gonzaga, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Iguig, and saw the product on Facebook shared by their Facebook friends. This made me conclude that social media is truly a beneficial tool to make one’s product or service be recognized by the masses since a single post of it reaches not only a sole but thousands of consumers within and outside the locality.Nevertheless, this is not always the case. Business owners’ utilization of social media to advertise varied products and services sometimes places their businesses at stake as theymorebecomesusceptible

Besides, as business owners aim at acquiring multitude of buyers to obtain high profit, they exert much efforts in devising various tactics to get the heart of consumers. The strategies that these business owners employ vary from one another; however, the most evident technique they use is posting the pictures of their products with their prices and incorporating the contact number of the seller or supplier. In our locality, there are a lot of businesses that evidently apply such practice.

The statement, “walang maloloko kung aforementionedtruemagpapaloko”walangisnotalwaysinallsituations.Inthecase,Ibeg to disagree that it is not the fault of the sellers to be deceived as they just performed their respective jobs which include trusting their callers or customers. It is more of the scammer that should be blamed as he/she is the one who injected immoral act and inflicted serious problem to the sellers. Besides, as creations who are gifted with the ability to think, it is our responsibility to make rational and good decisions. We know the difference between right and wrong and it is our role to always place wrong deeds in the denominator. We cannot control other people’s thinking. We can never bring back the huge amount of money that has been adversely robbed from us but we can avert the re-occurrence of such case by preparing ourselves and taking sufficient precautions.
The Federal Trade Commission Consumer Advice has brought down tips to help us avoid a scam. Firstly, we should not give our personal or financial information in response to a request that we do not expect. It is imperative for us to know that legitimate organization will not call, email, or text to ask for our personal information, like our Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers. Secondly, we must resist the pressure to act immediately. Legitimate businesses will give us time to make a decision. Anyone who pressures us to pay or give them our personal information is a scammer. Thirdly, we must know how scammers tell us to pay. We should never pay someone who insists a pay with a gift card or by using a money transfer service, and never deposit a check and send money back to someone. Lastly, we must learn to stop and talk to someone we trust. Before we perform anything else, tell someone - a friend, a family member, a neighbor - what happened. Talking about it could help us realize it’s a scam.
In this times of crisis, may we not use our strengths to mislead our brothers and sisters just to obtain money. Remember the golden rule that what we do to others will find its way back to us in most unexpected moment. So, we better think more than twice if possible whenever we make decisions.Toallbusiness owners, it is also substantial to note that you can believe the people requesting for your services but do it with heedful control. Be reminded that all that is too much is deadly. Trust responsibly. TI

15opinion to scammers. Because of the immeasurable convenience that the social media give, pertinent information such as contact number can effortlessly be obtained by Facebook users. Unfortunately, not all social media users are responsible and trustworthy as there are also plenty of them who are deceivers and fraudsters. These ruthless people use the contact numbers of these businesses to request bulk of orders. The most triggering part is that they hide their real identity by using the names of other people especially those who are well-known in the society to gain the trust of the seller.

Recently, there was a report of scamming here in Lal-lo. According to the report, the case happened on August 12, 2022 in Centro, Lal-lo, Cagayan. This instance was a scam of goods particularly foods and drinks like milktea, miki, and Samgyupsal. The scammer utilized the name of a highly respected person who is a public servant here in the locality to order these goods. Moreover, the report also said that the scammer detrimentally caused the victim to give off an approximate amount of Php28,000.00 to pay for these goods. The emergence of such unwanted motive is so disheartening at the same time alarming. I could not believe that scamming cases like this could also transpire not only in big cities but also in small communities like Lal-lo. I could not even imagine that there are still people who continuously and deliberately bring distress to their brothers and sisters instead of helping them achieve a better status in life.

Recovering from the grizzly impact of COVID-19 has been a catch-22 that cripples the lives of not only the impoverished individuals but the affluent as well. Looking back at the struggle we have faced for more than two years during the epoch of pandemic is grieve-striken to lay eyes on and we cannot, in any way, afford to withstand another pestilence as we are already depleted to deal with such once more. However, predicaments seem to be unceasing as we have yet to battle a new nemesis that may possibly bring another catastrophic turmoil - Monkeypox. First things first. Monkeypox is a rare illness caused by infection with the monkeypox virus that is similar to smallpox but not related to chickenpox. It is a viral zoonosis which means it is transmitted from animals to humans. It was discovered in 1958 when pox-like outbreaks took place in colonies of monkeys that were kept for research. Its first human case occurred in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a 9-month-old boy, and since then, succeeding cases had been reported in people, particularly in central and western African countries. For a long period of time, Monkeypox seems to be forgotten as many folks had no idea that the aforementioned viral disease existed before, not until in May of 2022 when the first-ever case emerged in the United Kingdom which has soon become widespread all across the world, including the Philippines where it recorded its first casualty last July, bringing people in tremendous phobia. As soon as the news broke in the Philippines, many Filipinos are pleading to close the Philippine peripheries to prevent its outbreak in the country as they are in fear of repeating the same mistake during the dawn of COVID-19. Outcries have also risen on different social media platforms penning their concerns about the possible surge of a new outbreak and hoping that the government’s response should be faster and more meaningful this time around. Most of them go by this statement:“Mayour health authorities be vigilant and act swiftly so as not to commit the same mistake by just ignoring the said kind of virus entering our country.”

Reiterating the Law that Governs Us
The Innovator18 opinion The Official Student Publication of CSU Lal-lo
To hear the riffles of truth for them is such a displeasure, showing disgrace towards the fourth estate to patch any possible hole where truth could possibly pop out. Since the establishment of this law in 1991, they turned their blind eyes that student publications are guided by their editorial policies that should remain undisturbed by any outside entities.
CAMPUS PRESS FREEDOM:
states that the editorial policies operated and managed by the student publication must still take into account pertinent laws and the school administration’s policies. This means that we still need to be accountable for the content we write. Besides, we cannot afford to be called by the administration just because of what we have written. This will indeed happen, unless we are acquainted with this law that governs our rights.
As stated in RA 7079, editorial policies operated and managed by the student publication “shall determine the frequency of the publication, the manner of selecting articles and features and other similar matters” which we, in the tertiary, should uphold. Hence, other institutions, even the administration, have no authority to impede its operations, especially the content it produces. This is press freedom. Press freedom, however, is not absolute. The same law
It is mentioned in the Section 7 or the Security of Tenure of the Act that a student “shall not be expelled or suspended solely based on articles he or she has written, or based on the performance of his or her duties in the student publication”.
In other words, we can be critical and radical with the content of the paper we are publishing as long as we tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Because whether the stories we tell are positive or negative to the readers’ views, as long as they are grounded on truth and reality, we must tell them undoubtedly. Remember that our rights as free press are guided by the law that “strengthens ethical values, encourages critical and creative thinking, and develops moral character and discipline” among the Filipino youth. Be brave. Be inevitable. Be the voice of truth. TI ESTATE From the archives
It is true that the school papers in the basic education tend to be still dependent on the administration because of specific orders the education department has implemented. However, journalism in tertiary schools should be more independent, thus must not be regarded the same as the elementary and secondary schools do.
THE VOICE OF THE FOURTH
“The student publication is the issue of any printed material that is independently published by and which meets the needs and interests of the studentry”.Republic Act No.7079 or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 clearly states this in one of its provisions, but we tend to forget it. Volume XXVIII Issue 1 April - August, 2022 19opinion in Philippine History, a general education course in higher education.First,Ilearned that historical knowledge is limited by the incompleteness of records. As Louis Gottschalk, an American historian, discussed in his “A Primer of Historical Method”, once the past has occurred, it is gone forever with only sporadic traces. Besides, despite the amazing quantity of historical documents, only a small portion of historical events were ever actually observed; only a portion of what was seen in the past was remembered by the people who saw it, and only a portion of what was remembered was recorded; only a portion of what has survived has come to the historian’s attention; only a portion of what is credible has been understood; and, only a portion of what has been understood can be explained or narrated by the historian, which makes history prone to biases. However, history, as posited by Gottschalk, consists of description and narration of past actuality integrated through critical inquiry for the whole truth. This means the use of historical method such as historiography to assess information, which was dominantly passed down throughout human civilization by mouth, before thatmethod.”thearehistoriography,usinghumankind’stoandandprocessthereconstructionwritingHistoriography,publication.ortheofhistory,isthecreativeofthepastusinginformationgleanedfromtheofcriticallyinvestigatingevaluatinghistoricalrecordsartifacts.Thehistoriantriespiecetogetherasmuchofpastashecan,historicaltechniqueandbothofwhichsometimescombinedunderumbrellaterm“historicalHe/shemustbecertainhishistoricaldocumentsare,
I learned in RPH that we can use and analyze historical documents by using Document Based Questions (DBQ), also known as Origin, Purpose, Value, and Limitation (OPVL), as presented in the reading titled “A Guide for Using Source or Original Source Documents” by Minnesota Humanities Center (n.d.). It is widely used in the curriculum and exam preparation materials for the International Baccalaureate and is exceptionally effective in preparing students to be critical observers. Here I learned that being biased does not limit the value of a source. If we are going to comment on the bias of a document, we must go into detail: Who is it biased towards? Who is it biased against? What part of a story does it leave out? What part of the story is missing because of the parts left out? This is simply neglected by gossipers, also known as Marites, because they do not care about the validity and authenticity of the information they are relying on as long as their co-Mariteses are enjoying it. They consider facts to be biased without scrutiny and a valid and detailed explanation of theirEssentially, claims. history, with its sources and methods, takes a considerable amount of time to be explicated. This column only traverses the limited information that I must convey to the reading public, which may not be convincing enough to satisfy them. It is still open to constructive and educational argument. But now that you have read something from the lens of a history learner, do you still equate history to a tsismis? The answer is now all yours. HISTORY IS LIKE TSIMIS from 13
Most importantly, his main source of information is the testimony of an eyewitness, a witness using another sense, a mechanical device like a dictaphone, or another person who was physically present during the events that he/she is relating. This simply distinguished history from tsismis. Unlike history, which was subjected to deliberate evaluative procedures, tsismis is simply unverified information relayed by gossipy people without careful assessment of its veracity. Despite lack of factuality, the narrative they disseminate aims to sensationalize information just to entertain other people.History may contain biases, but people who are educated enough know how to verify it. This comprises content analysis, which enables us to form hypotheses and reach conclusions regarding the messages or texts that express the author’s viewpoint as well as the intended audience. By doing this, we can also recognize the author’s argument or thesis, contrast points of view, spot biases, and assess the claim the author is making in light of the evidence that is currently available.

Year 2021, when summer came and pandemic is not yet over, I happened to stay in my dorm again, because the internet connection at our barangay was bad, and I have an online summer class. This time, I already have the chance to visit the place. Unexpectedly, the once calming aura of the area turned out to be gloomy and creepy. The tables and chairs, and the swings gradually broke down; the ground is mantled with dried fallen leaves of the mahogany; the grasses that surrounded the place became tall and, at some point, formidable; and, the sunlight can rarely have a glimpse on the place since the trees grow more and totally covered up the area which made it However, darker.as I found a remaining sturdy table and chair, I sat down and I realized something that hasn’t changed. I closed my eyes and I took a deep breath, as I reminisce the past happenings under these mahogany trees. The beauty and serenity didn’t disappear. As the wind blows and whispers to my ears, while a little sunrise
Wonder Behind The Mahogany
Time passed and I had to leave my dorm again. I decided to go back home since our barangay already had its internet connection that is way better than before. I didn’t hear anything about the place under the mahogany trees for a long period of time, not until the Facebook page of the campus publication, The CSU Lal-lo Innovator, posted an update about the area. It has its name already, and it is called the, VALENA Heritage Picnic Grove. Pictures were posted and I saw the development of the place. I even saw that several school activities are done in the said picnic grove. Students, teachers, and other staff of the school also took pictures in here and used it as their profile pictures. Indeed, the neglected beauty of the area is restored. Thanks to the agriculture students who beautified the park for a purpose. When I had the chance to visit the area, I never hesitated to explore it. My friend who is an agriculture student accompanied me and tour me at the place. There I recognized its huge development - from a gloomy and creepy ambience to being fashioned as a lovely spot that is really suitable to have picnic with friends. The broken tables and chairs were replaced with new ones, and there are more swings installed. There are also new captivating spots in here like the giant circle and heart-shaped booth made up of vines. There are also grilling stations, and the ground is no longer mantled with dried leaves of the mahogany trees. The place was cleaned and made safer for everyone. Thus, the newly developed VALENA Heritage Picnic Grove is not just a place to refresh the minds of students during summer or after tedious school tasks. Instead, it’s a place built for everyone at the campus to create more meaningful memories during their entire stay in the campus. This picnic grove can make everyone who visits it appreciate how unity with nature can turn dull and gloomy days to a -bright, melodious, and peaceful life of people.

This wonder, as serene as the spring, lies at Cagayan State University Lal-lo Campus. Grown mahogany trees thrive in this area, near to the College of Agriculture building. The trees made the place more captivating on the sight of people, for it gives a very relaxing view from the field and calming feeling from the touch of the wind. The place have tables and chairs made of bamboos crafted by the agriculture students and faculty. Like a park, few swings, made from logs, were hung. Riding them made me remember my childhood days.Indeed, it is a perfect place to untangle the wobbling minds of students after tedious school tasks. They can have their snacks with their friends, do some chitchats, and just have some “me-time” under the trees. We can see beams and laughter from the visitors and listen to the sonorous sounds of the dancing trees - just beauty and peace transcending over this innocent place. This is how I can remember vividly the place that is now called, “VALENA Heritage Picnic Grove”. Neglected Beauty Way back 2019, when I was a freshman, I always steal a glance at this place. Though my dormitory is close to this majestic area of the university, I didn’t have the chance to visit it. I just passed by, and there, I witnessed how scenic and serene it is. Nevertheless, when pandemic came, its captivating beauty was neglected. Hence, no more students visited the place.
touches my skin as it managed to escape the leaves and branches of the trees, I noticed that the memories are still alive. Students, friendships, smiles, laughter, sound, and serenity is what this place longed. It’s like we are hoping that these things will be back again - hoping that the calmness and bliss it can give to people will return.

Litter fall is a key part of the nutrient cycle in forest ecosystems, since it controls the buildup of soil organic matter, nutrient input and output, nutrient replenishment, biodiversity conservation, and other ecosystem activities.
Do you know that one hectare of mangrove trees produces up to 3.6 tons of litter fall annually?

The note Tatangsays.went to the rice field earlier than anyone on this village. He is taking care of our field like it is the only source of our lives. Well, it is actually the only thing we have in order for us toWesurvive.areonly two living in this house, and I don’t know much about my mother. All I know is he left us after she gave birth of me. I also heard rumors about the love story of my parents, but it’s not really that convincing because it only came to the best gossipers of this town.
Scream of Hope
I looked at Aling Maring with an empty face, and I gave Loida a little glance before I place my basin on the Pozo Negro.“Tikoy, I’m an adult and I know that you and Loida have feelings for each other.” Aling Maring said without any sign of regret on her face. Loida and I are both shocked for what she said. “Lolang, please don’t embarrass…” Loida tries to talk but Aling Maring interrupted her.
“WAAKKEEE UP YOU STUPID KIDS!” she shouted like a dragon or a monster that eats the whole speaker. She’s louder than any of the cocks on this town.
“Your life must be so miserable for that 18 years Tikoy. Embrace change kid. Never let anyone control the way you want to live your life.” Said aling Maring after I finish filling my basin with water. I caught Loida staring at me before I carry the basin and leave.“Luding!
t’s already 4:30 in the morning and the loud crows of cocks from the neighbourhood are creating so much noise. The dawn is breaking and it’s ready to brighten up the day. The birds are chirping, the flowers bloom, and the plant leaves are covered with dew drops. Everyone seems so ready to begin their day with so much energy and excitement, except for me. I’m still here lying on my tiny bed, keep warming my body with an old blanket, and hugging sixteen-year old pillow given by my Lola Tansiang when I was two years of age. I don’t want to wake up. I don’t want to start my day yet, for I know that nothing new will happen. It’s just a day, circulating in a same routine. A boring day indeed.I’drather sleep and continue my dream than to face the reality of this miserable life. But, her sound. Her long loud voice that ruins every of my dreams. It’s so irritating and disturbing.
“How many times do I have to tell you Junjun that you have to wake up earlier? Get up and fill all the empty basin with water. And you Loida, cook food already for our breakfast! You two will help me after in washing all our dirty clothes!” she mandated her grandchildren. She’s aling Maring. Their house is just two-meter away from our house. And yes, I can hear all their fights; all their dramatic, tragic, blaring scenarios every morning. Sometimes I steal a glance on our window and there I can see vividly how she throw containers, spatula, and even a kettle to her granddaughter, Loida. It’s quite funny though. In fact, it is an enough reason for me to put a little curve in my face. Since I am already bothered again by their noises, and I guess I used to these scenes, I got up and fix my bed. I went downstairs and as usual, breakfast is ready, and a note is left on the“Eattable.your breakfast. Don’t forget to take your medicine.”
I remember one time when Tatang and Auntie Yolanda quarrelled because of our debt in their sari-sari store. Tatang couldn’t pay the medicine he borrowed for me because it isn’t a harvest season of rice yet.
“Your son is your Karma Berning! You betrayed God by marrying a woman! You’re a priest and you committed one of the heaviest sin! Now all the bad lucks entered your life and your son will bring more of it!” auntie Yolanda yelled with so much animosity on her face over my father when he told her that he don’t have money yet to pay our debt. Our lives is full of criticisms. And nobody in this town accepted us like a real citizen of this place. Everyone treat us like an outcast, and every day I get so much hatred by our neighbours. Even Aling Maring told me before that I shouldn’t be born because I am a fruit of sins. I guess she’s right. I shouldn’t really be born. Despite this life that we have, I still ate my breakfast; I still want to see that everything will change someday. I took my medicine afterwards, just like taking all the negativity thrown by us, and still hopes that I and my father will have a better feeling one day.
“Hey Tikoy!” she tried to catch my attention.
“What’s with that smile Tikoy?” tatang ask me with also a smile on his face. ✍ Diana Mae Lumboy
I
The clothes are waiting to be washed!” I heard her yelled at Loida again. I smiled secretly when I reached home. It felt nice to be accepted by people. When tatang got home, he also got surprised when he saw smiling at our window facing the house of aling Maring.
Later I decided to fetch water on our Pozo Negro. There I saw Loida and aling Maring washing their dirty clothes. Loida looks like a morning flower that bloomed with so much fragrance this time, and she gets prettier when she smiled at me. But I never smile back to anyone, and it’s never a surprise to them.Aling Maring saw her smiling at me and she broke the momentum by throwing a wet t-shirt on Loida’s face.
I don’t know how or what to feel when Aling Maring speak to me like a concern mother. It’s my first time not to hear hurtful words, and it undoubtedly brings a different aura to my day. This was the first time I hear positivity.
“You shut up Loida. Both of your eyes speaks about your feeling already! And you Tikoy, from your 18 years of living on this planet, nobody on this town saw you smile. I only heard your voice less than trice! Stop blaming yourself from the mistakes of your parents. Create your own life and don’t ever chain yourself from the past.” she said with a concern.
“It’s okay. I know that you’re blaming yourself, because you think you’re a cursed child. But, please don’t. She died because of a heart failure. Lolang told me everything. She is always telling us that your father is a good man. He may committed a mistake, yet he already admitted it and accepted all the consequences. It’s just that some people of our town are close minded to not realize the goodness of your father. Did you know that uncle Berning let Lolang borrow hundreds of thousands for Lilong Daniel’s chemotherapy before? ”“No. I didn’t.” “It’s because your heart is also close to know the truth.” She said quickly.

It’s already five o’clock in the morning and I wasn’t awakened by Aling Maring’s scream over her grandchildren. Besides, I was awakened by the mournful cries of Loida. I opened my window and there I saw Loida and Junjun carrying Aling Maring’s lifeless body. I wanted to run towards them and help Loida, but our other neighbours approached them first. So, I stayed home and chose to witness the nine days funeral from a distant. I never went to their house even if it’s just two meter away from ours. Certainly, everyone will just blame me for Aling Maring’s death because she talked and became kind to me. Everybody in this town believed that I am cursed so no one ever became nice to me, except AlingUntil,Maring.the day of burial came, and still I don’t have the courage to visit Aling Maring. It’s not that I don’t care, but because I am afraid for what other people will tell. Three days had past, and there I secretly visits her tomb.“Sorry for not talking to anyone of your family. Sorry I didn’t have the courage to attend your funeral. Forgive me aling Maring.” I solemnly said. “You have a very nice voice.” I got so scared when I heard that female sound, and in fact, I even jump on Aling Maring’s tomb. “Hey, Tikoy! Calm down, I’m right here!” “Oh Loida. It’s you. Sorry, I thought it was-- something else.” I responded nervously and went down of the tomb when I gained back my consciousness. “It’s good you visit her already. I was expecting that you’ll visit her funeral, but you didn’t.” she confronted me. “Sorry.” I said shortly.
“Nothing. I just feel great today.” I replied shortly. “Tatang, did we already paid all our debts?” I asked in a serious tone. “I think, yes. I already paid the money and medicine I borrowed to Yolanda.” he answered. “How about our sins in this town? Do you think they already forgive us? I again asked. After this question, silence broke our conversation. The smile he wear is replaced by a sudden gloomy face. “Don’t worry Tatang. Everything will change. I’ll change the way this town look at us.” He never responded to me after I say these words, but I see a little bliss on his face. Thanks to Aling Maring that brought hope to my ears. I planned to talk to her on the next day. I waited for her long loud voice to wake me up. I wanted to thank her and ask her more about my mother and Tatang. But something unusual happened instead.
Thanks to Aling Maring’s scream every morning. It wakes me up from my lucid dreams, and encourage me to face the reality of life every day. She made me realized that mistakes are not inheritable. They are made to teach us vast of lessons in life. On the side of my Tatang, he learned from his mistakes

“I guess, your Lolang is right Loida. I should never let other people affect me now. Thanks Loida, and thank you to your Lolang Maring.” I said with a smile on my face. “Now you’re smiling. Do not just breathe Tikoy. Live a meaningful life.” She responded.

“You have Aphasia.” That’s not even a question. It’s more like a statement and I think she’s sure of what she said. She waited a couple of seconds then uttered. “Yeah, maybe you’re an Aphasia patient!”
“Why are you quiet?”
✍ Jerrymie Siriban
Someone asked me and when I didn’t utter a single reply she asked me again. “Why don’t you like to answer?” Then she added another, “Hey speak up.” This time she already commanded me. “Can’t you speak?” I didn’t shake my head or nod. I just held my head down as a sign that I don’t want to answer her question.

Mute
I tried to speak but I can’t because I didn’t want to, but she’s right I have a disability. I can’t speak even if I try it hundred times! All I can do was moan as a reply and for them, that’s kind of a comedy and I am the comedian that they need to laugh at. “Pipi! That’sPipi!”what they always call me. I can’t do anything nor defend myself because I don’t have the ability to speak and it frustrates me a lot!
“Just cut your tongue! You can’t even speak with it!” Yes, I have this so-called condition where I hardly communicate with other people and for those who surround me, I am just a speck of dust that they badly want to wipe. They were right I guess? Because they believe that a person who has a language disorder may offer some help. I saw a crime; yes, a crime! A woman was brutally killed by three men along the slum area of our barangay and maybe they killed her after they raped her. I saw how pitiful the woman is. Those demonic douchebags saw me but I can’t see fear in their faces while looking at me. Why? Clearly, they knew I can’t report them because I can’t speak. They left the place with a smirk plastered on their creepy faces. I want to scream my lungs out of my body just to make a noise and my neighborhood will hear me, yet I just fooled myself because who would hear the scream of a disabled person right? I agree with what they are saying, what am I capable of? I can’t even talk to a baby or join in public speaking or a debate. To even buy candy or an ingredient whenever my mother asked me to buy some in the store and that is a challenge to me that felt difficult because I don’t have the communication skills in me. Some people have a lot of patience and stay beside me, understanding my indifference but mostly, other people cannot just waste their precious time understanding my incapabilities and who I am. Well, I am just a mere useless individual who can’t speak even the alphabet.Itwould be better if they will not just pay attention to me. But why at the same time, mockery was very visible on their faces? I can hear their sharp and painful stabs that travel and reaches my tiny cells even my whole being and soul?!!! They didn’t even ask me if I want this kind of punishment! They didn’t even see how painful I am because they saw me as a clown! They don’t even know my battles! How miserable and hopeless I am! Every day was a reminder to me that I was living in this world being useless again, feeling sorry for myself. Every day, every day was torture to me! And it feels like living in hell! It’s not fun anymore! Why do people can’t accept me for who I am?! I can’t speak yes, but that won’t give them the validation to step on my rights as a human being! Society and its hypocrite people! Living in this world was no fun! I can’t speak but I am not deaf not to hear their contemptuous words towards me and I am not even blind not to see how happy they are whenever they ridicule me. I’m not even insensitive not to feel the pang in my chest whenever those piercing words hit me. I lost my confidence to defend myself. Am I able to continue my everyday life-fighting? Or I should raise my right hand declaring my defeat inside my head indicating that I am already giving up. What is the right thing to do when the world that you should lean and trust on betrayed and abandoned you? I hide every tear that flows down unto my cheeky, sobs that never reach the ear of the people concerned, my growl that symbolizes my suffering, and my silence full of sorrow. I want to shout out all my hate but I can’t. I am mute and just let it be that way.

Dear people who knows her, I know everything happens to her, but I can’t talk. You all think and act like you know every little details about her, thus you speak like a master of her story. For you, her laughter is a sign of bliss; for me it’s her sweetest lies. For you, her nights is always with sweet sleeps; for me she’s having her deepest sighs. For you, the mornings she wakes up are filled with hope and courage; for me it’s just another day for her to survive. You all think she’s just fine; for me she’s just pretending to be alright. I can feel her heart and it’s so heavy. I can hear her thoughts; she’s screaming and asking for help. You all said she’s doing great, but she’s really loosing her faith in everything. The dreams she draw on her mind, the hopeful thoughts she used to hold, and the inspiration she put on her heart are already fading as the days passed by. Try to look at her eyes and there you will see the truth she is trying to hide. She’s dying but she won’t ask for help. She’s screaming but you won’t hear any single word from her. Don’t be fooled by her sweet smiles and try to hear her heart. She’s tired my friend. She’s tired. She can’t see hope anymore, for her days are filled with dark and heavy clouds. She can’t sing anymore, for her lips is zipped with loneliness. She can’t dance anymore under the rising sun, for her feet are chained with pain which keeps holding her back. She can’t step forward, for she’s empty; she’s at her lowest already. Do you know about all of these? I bet youNowdon’t.that I made a letter, go and help her. Set her free from the cage made by her own negative thoughts. Unchain her from the pain holding her back. Bring another sunlight on her gloomy days. She can’t do it alone anymore; she can’t save herself anymore. Please help her before she will lose the moribund beam of light on her dark room filled with uncertainties and pressure that can never be seen by all your naked eyes. Let your heart hear her. Don’t be deceived by her sweetest lies (her laughs).

“Be contented with what you have.” I am happy living with this quotation, minding my own business, living my life to the fullest, and savoring every time I am still alive, but, little by little, the blindfold that has been on my eyes for a long time is being removed and I can’t believe that I can see the reality that I didn’t realize for a long time. Reality – the real life competition is fast approaching to my way. My other classmates are now ready to take another journey; some are gifted; others are very good in making decisions; others are very productive. Compared to me, I’m just an ordinary dreamless go with the flow type of person living in a competitive world. I wish I can turn back time, but I can’t. I want to go back to the time when opportunities opened their doors for me, so I could enhance and develop my skills and talents, and most importantly, to grow as a better individual. Through the ups and dows and with my experiences in life, I realized that life is not a race. Don’t compare other’s victories to yours. We have our own timeline that is different to others. We have our own chapter in our life. Remember, we are just milky way. We can shine when it is our time.

One silent night filled with bliss and happiness, we all looked into the pitch-black sky filled with countless stars that reminded us to be strong and grateful. Long conversations were done and we subconsciously fell into asleep with strong conviction that tomorrow will be a better day. When the sun rose, a loud and frightening scream from the house awoke us from slumber. We hurriedly ran back to the house then we saw someone, which gave a big trauma to us. It’s already six o’clock in the morning. The sunrays passed through my window and touched my face. It gave a warm welcome for a brand new day but my eyes still wanted to take for another 15 minute-nap. My mom furiously shouted that I would be late in my class if I will keep on sleeping, so I hurriedly get up on my bed and prepared myself for school. Surprisingly, I arrived in our school just on time. As I walked into the hallway, I saw Karen, one of my friends, and I intentionally bumped on her shoulders for her to notice me. When we arrived in our classroom, we came across with our other friends like: James, Liza and Mateo. As we saw each other, we said hello and formed a small talk. We have been best friends since we were high school. Now, we are already college students taking up Bachelor of Arts in Political Science because we want to become fullfledged lawyers in the future. We may have the same likings, especially on the field of law, but we have different personalities. I am the most talkative and most impatient in our group. Karen is the most caring person and always comforts us when we are in need of advice. James is the most stubborn among us; he also loves to poke fun with other person, that is why he always gets involve in a fight. Liza is the fashion lover in our group and lately, she distances herself with us because of her problem with her parents, who is against with the journey that she is taking. Lastly, Mateo is the brother figure in our group; he is very dependable and also hilarious; he always throws off funny jokes just to lighten the mood in our daily conversations. We promised that we would be lawyers of those who are being treated unequally by other people. After our stressful morning class, we went to the cafeteria for a lunch break. James initiated a conversation, but as we observed that Liza was not really interested with our conversations and we could see it clearly in her eyes the trace of sadness that she was going through. Immediately, since on the day after today is weekend, Mateo suggested having an overnight stay tomorrow for two days for us to relax and forget all the stress that we were experiencing. He also happily insisted that the event would be held on his place, since his whole family will be out for two days. We all agreed to it because it’s been a long time since we have an overnight stay in someone’s home. Although Liza was not really in the mood, she still said ‘yes’ maybe because she wanted to get away from her parents even just for aThenight.next day was totally a day filled with enthusiasm and positive vibes, as we prepared our things and foods that will be needed in our overnight stay. My mom did not hesitate to give her approval on our plans, since she knew that I would be safe with my friends. We arrived in Mateo’s place in the afternoon. We hurriedly placed our things on the floor and sat on the couch, as we breathed heavily because of exhaustion. We took a short break to redeem our energy before we set our belongings in the available rooms on the house. The first day of our overnight stay was full of laughter and enjoyment. We ate together, smiled together, and talked about silly things together. I also felt reassured when I saw the face of Liza smiling bits by bits. I just didn’t want this moment to stop.Next morning, the sun burst its sunrays in every corner of the room, telling us to get up because another memorable day is approaching. We all get up and ate breakfast together, then Mateo said that he would tour us in his favorite places. We rove through his favorite restaurant, park and, church that he revealed that it is his comfort place when he is lonely. This sparked our curiosity since we’ve never seen him being engulfed with isolation. Arrived in the house in the noon, we were all tired and exhausted but it was all worth it because we collected another momentous moment in our lives not just as companions but also as a human being. As we finished our dinner, Karen suggested to us that we sleep together outside to stargaze, then Liza supported the idea immediately which seems she has another plan. We placed ourselves outside to stargaze. We talked about several things like what happened today and our status in the future. Our conversations filled with hefty amount of positivity until Liza opened up her true feelings. She said everything about her hatred towards her parents. The positive vibe switched from different directions. Our conversation turned to more ✍ Allan M. Basug

Tears poured heavier when we knew that he planned everything before the overnight stay in their house. He wanted to enjoy his last two days of his life with pure happiness with us. On that part, I wished we knew his sadness. I hope he shared his sorrow to us, because we are not just his friends; we are also his family.
On the next day, we faced another morning with uncertainty in our minds. We entered school, but the feeling was unusual than our normal classes. After our classes, we decided to go on Mateo’s funeral and tears kept on pouring like for eternity. On his very last moment, we promised to him that we will check ones’ feelings, whether we are okay or not, and also promised to open up everything if we are in pain. That is a promise that we will do, a promise that we hope should be done

Again, we cried and laughed together at that night and we all fell asleep with smiles on our faces, but everything had changed in just a blink of an eye. Karen frighteningly screamed that resonated the whole house and woke us up from deep sleep. With drowsy mood, we hurriedly went back to the house to see what happened when we saw someone hanging on the ceiling and gushing with blood on his wrist as if it was a suicide. It is shocking to see such incident but it is more shocking when we saw the identity of the dead person is; it was Mateo! We were shocked so much by the moment that I wish it was just a nightmare - a nightmare that can only scare us but it is not true at all. I wanted to wake up badly. But, the reality struck, when I was not the only one who experienced that dream. Our happy get together turned into a crime scene. The ambulance came and the neighbors contacted Mateo’s parents to inform them, but it is over. . . Mateo died with his hands. We will never see his smiles and will never hear his hilarious jokes. We went back home that day with heavy hearts and my mom told me to stay in the house for a while. I opened my messaging app to know the condition of my friends, then I saw a message from Mateo. His message was sent 2 o’clock in the dawn. My eyes were filled with tears pouring swiftly on the floor because the message that I received was Mateo’s last message before he killed himself and I was occupied with guilt because we didn’t know how much pain he had. I hope that we asked him if he was okay even if he was smiling. He said that he might not continue to enter college because he had to work for their family since his father lost his job and they have a lot of debts to pay. With that, his parents are always fighting because of money. He also revealed that his parents bear anything at all; he lost his family and even his dream so he decided to put an end on his life.
