ngo Maurer, the lighting prodigy from Germany, has given the world diverse lighting solutions that pose to be exceptionally designed, highly functional yet sustainable. He has brought in a whole new dimension to how lighting is perceived for interiors and exteriors. After a brief stint as a typographer, Maurer studied graphic design in Munich and later went on to work

A Lighting Genius With the proficiency to create definitive lighting solutions, lighting artist Ingo Maurer’s luminous projects are extraordinary creations.

as a freelance graphic designer in USA. Realizing his calling in design, he founded his own studio Design M in 1966, later rechristened Ingo Maurer GmbH, under whose wing he developed his illuminated models. His first ever revolutionary design was that of a simple, yet unconventional table lamp: an oversized hand-blown glass light bulb with a smaller, working internal bulb. The Bulb was a play on Thomas Edison’s classic invention and set the standards for Maurer’s forthcoming work. His designs give modernism a new twist. My New Flame - a table candle that never burns down is designed by Maurer and Moritz Waldemeyer. Aptly titled, it’s an LED light that renders the image of a captivating flame - courtesy 128 tiny LEDs - at

Another installation that offers more customisation, Flying Flames is a flexible chandelier system created using the same LED candles that are combined with simple downlight elements. Replete with a clean look, the LED’s Oskar is a shelf lamp apt for bedside tables, bookshelves and desks. It gives a soft, white glow while also cleverly working as a bookend. His other creations that grab your gaze are ZakZarak, a geometrical take on the traditional desk lamp; ManOMan, a mobile uplighter that changes appearance with the viewing angle; J.B. Award-winning Maurer has created more than 150 lighting structures and designed lighting for diverse international venues like private homes, hotels, airports, public buildings, etc. Some of his best luminous designs are the Bulb (1966), the low-voltage system YaYaHo (1984) and an elegant table lamp Lucellino (1992) that find home

Designed in collaboration with Munich-based architects Allmann Sattler Wappner, the concept borrows the aesthetics of Zen Buddhism, which reduces the visual stimuli to minimal providing a relaxing space.

In select areas, LEDs spotlights also generate a magical three-coloured shadow of the person passing by. Ingo Maurer’s lighting sculptures have always been innovative and revolutionary; denoting that his design collection goes beyond the usual and captures the nuances of light, art and functionality in its true essence. of Sandhya Gorthi who is a lawyer by qualification. Sandhya has worked in media, management, IT and corporate training for over 13 years before she got into retail. She had helped bring an old brand from Delhi, The Shop - a clothing and home store, to Mumbai, which opened in March 2011. Du r i n g t h i s p r o c e s s , s h e discovered that she loved retail, and in particular, furniture. She did a lot of research and found that there was a gap in the market for well-curated, reasonably priced non-ornate/non-blingy, vintage and industrial pieces in furniture

and home dÊcor. She also chanced upon the location for the store really quickly, and decided to just take the plunge. Thus Sanctum was born! Although she is the sole proprietor, she got a lot of help from some of the fabulous designers, vendors and her mentors who helped her in building a financially and operationally robust company. At Sanctum you’ll find signature pieces and accent furniture, classic and old world home accessories, candles, mirrors, lamps, crockery and furnishings, including work by new and established designers. Some of their products are old and have been treated and

Cheerful kitchen and bar accessories from world renowned brands jostle for space with stationery and other utilitarian items like clocks and storage bins; all elevated to functional art! When asked about their marketing strategy, Sandhya Gorthi, Director, Sanctum explained, “Since we’re not on high street, we have done a series of marketing activities to gain visibility. Word of mouth works best for us. We also tie up with local restaurants and other businesses and do cross promotions. Our Facebook page brings us a lot of notice. At the end of the day it’s the products sources a wide selection of vendor and designer products. Many products are made using recycled wood and other recycled materials, or made by NGOs; so there is a strong environmental and social aspect to the products as well. The store also showcases the work of many young designers and is constantly pushing boundaries of design and delighting with new products. ounded in 2010, Bend is a Los Angeles based design and manufacturing company. The firm designs furniture, lighting and other goods which are functional with a commitment to being innovative and playful. A sculptor, designer and entrepreneur, Gaurav Nanda grew up in Michigan where he constantly found himself building, bending and joining materials to give them a new purpose. His early creative impulses included constructing human sculptures from wire, printing t-shirts using his homemade screen-printing machine and crafting clay pots with a vintagemodern composition. Driven by his passion for making functional yet sculptural objects, Gaurav pursued his vision for a new brand, which he called Bend. Talking about the inception of Bend, Gaurav Nanda says, “After graduating from Purdue and studying animation in Vancouver, my early career years were spent working as a sculptor/designer for an automotive company. I learned a lot about form and line quality, which set the stage for working with wire. After a couple of years, it became time to start my own venture. I spent two years developing my line and took cues from the 1950s sculptor Harry Bertoia’s metal rod chairs. I set out to find a way to update the concept and offer something different and edgier and a lot more intricate and comfortable.” At Bend, the quality of their products is in the details; the inviting shapes, the sparks of colour, the ease of assembly, even the packaging. Each element embodies Bend’s drive for making iconic products. The chairs are designed and produced for both indoor and

outdoor environments. They have taken every measure to prevent corrosion by using durable materials. Additionally, sustainable materials are used that are locally sourced and finished employing a galvanization process. When required they are also powder coated to withstand the elements. All their chairs are

outfitted with glides to prevent the creation of friction with the ground. The packaging is so designed that the merchandise is easy to ship, thereby minimising the carbon footprint and contributing to a LEED certification. Talking about his designs, Gaurav says, “The process starts with

something I see, like maybe a cup I am inspired by or a certain type of bird. From there, I sketch out some rough concept drawings of what the furniture might look like. I play around with scale and shape, and once I have some solid ideas I build paper models with vellum paper and clear tape. Previously I would build

products in a 3D software program, but I am finding it more and more useful and tangible to see a physical form. After a physical model is made, we make samples which go through extensive testing.” He continues,“The manufacturing process of our chairs involves intricate patterns of wire formed through a handcrafted method of shaping and spot welding; a process we like to call ‘bending.’ Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength, while the angles of the back, the curvature of the seat, and the distance between the wires are designed to encourage relaxation. When anyone sits in our chairs, the first thing we typically hear is ‘Wow, this is comfortable!’” With prices ranging from 60495 US Dollars, Bend structures are intricate, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for utility. While having bestsellers like the

Talking about marketing Bend products in India, Gaurav expressed an interest in seeking out a distributor to sell locally in India. “My focus is to reinvent simplicity, execute impeccable craftsmanship with modern concepts and to inject the environments around me with wit and functionality. These are important characteristics to my work. In a way the patterns used in my work can be traced to my Indian heritage, as an homage of sorts to my thriving culture. Bend is seeing exciting growth right now, and I will be introducing additional materials this year to progress beyond the ideas originally introduced by Bertoia and Eames,” concludes Gaurav. This year’s theme of the iSaloni being ‘Interiors of tomorrow’, the showcase was a blend of the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile and Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, as well as the Euroluce (lighting) gathering that grabbed the spotlight, with evolved styles, precise lines, modern designs and attention to detail. A range of trendy, energy-saving and creative solutions were on show to light up your homes and offices. Kartell’s Light-Air is yet another essential, modern and rational design, but at the same time it produces a magic effect. Its structure is a strong graphic statement composed of a rectangular frame formed of two pieces of laser-welded polycarbonate containing a conical parabola inside diffusing the light rays. The lamp with LED technology comes in two versions, one “traditional” and one mirrored. Evoking the stylized image of a leaf, the Tea wall sconce by Kartell works its charm as a simple, yet effective light source. It can be used as a single decoration or in scenic compositions of the same type to adorn a wall. design, this fabric-embellished lamp has jet-ink printing on both sides. Another path breaking innovation was the Living Sculpture 3D Module by Philips. This is a system that allows designers to produce threedimensional arrays of OLEDs for walls and ceilings. Using a series of tiles and linking rods which fix into a back plate, Designer Christopher Bauder has come up with a system that allows a designer to exercise their creativity without having to worry about the technicalities. The Living Sculpture also helps designers to learn how they can best employ the very different lighting experience that OLEDs provide. The iSaloni is a smorgasbord of furniture and design and these are but a handful of pieces that caught our attention. inspiration from a banker’s lamp which is one of the earliest kinds of electric lamps, made as early as the 1800s. Unlike its pre-historic cousin, Gilad’s version is injected with high technology and updated with slick lines. Goldman comes in two versions: a gold-plated brass stand with a green shade, or a black nickel stand with a smoked glass shade. The Cool Lamp is a floor lamp with which Flos is launching a new and surprising technology patent: a sophisticated compact cooling system for high-power LEDs, based on a cleverly concealed water circuit. The Cool Lamp is an example of the simplified complexity that is the key in PieroLissoni’s work. Water is forced up inside the full length of the lamp shaft thanks to a reservoir and a pump, both hidden in the base: an ingenious way to tackle the difficulty of cooling a high-power LED in a lamp that is so tall and slim.

he 2013 edition of one of the most important exhibitions for the ceramic and bathroom furnishings sector is getting into gear once again. The 31 st Cersaie, to be held in Bologna from 23rd September to 27th September, 2013 will be a major event for professionals in search of

the latest trends in ceramics and will be of special interest to architects, interior designers, contractors and construction firms from all over the world. The figures for Cersaie 2012 have confirmed the show’s status as the key international event for the ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings sectors

A ‘Sneak Peek’ At Cersaie 2013 Cersaie 2013 is all set to kick-off and the

show promises to maintain its international appeal more than ever.

Cersaie, held every September in Bologna, Italy, is an international extravaganza of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings

with over 1,00,000 visitors. As part of Cersaie’s special focus on the bathroom furnishings sector, the show is organising an exhibition titled “Bathroom Excellence 1998 - 2012. Adi Design Index @ Cersaie 2013”. This exhibition of products and materials traces out a timeline of the design and industrial processes that occurred between 1998 and 2012. The event will also explore the recent developments of the bathroom sector and showcase innovations and ideas that producer companies and designers have chosen to launch onto the international market at Cersaie. Following last year’s success, the Tiling City initiative will be back with an even larger demonstration

area for the latest floor and wall tile installation techniques. The second edition of “Cersaie designs your home” will again offer consumers the chance of free consultation with leading interior design magazines. For the fifth year running, Cersaie’s conference program, “Building, Dwelling, Thinking,” will return for another year of seminars and talks by figures in the world of architecture and design. Cersaie will also be focusing on the vital contribution of women in architecture with a day event devoted to three internationally renowned female architects - Carla Juaçaba, Izaskun Chinchilla and Sarah Robinson - professionals with innovative vision whose work has pushed frontiers of their field. “Italian ceramics and design are two closely related sectors, the manufacturing versatility of the former finding fertile ground for experimentation in the latter,” commented Vittorio Borelli, Chairman of Confindustria Ceramica’s Promotional and Trade Fairs Activities Committee. As the world’s foremost showcase of new trends in ceramic and bathroom furnishings, Cersaie is particularly an exhibition that cannot be missed or ignored. Contact web: www.cersaie.it
