luxury translating itself into lean and stark manifestations. The spirit of the prolific Piero Fornasetti, in wake of his recent critical rehabilitation, inspired several designers to take on a more whimsical, fairytale-inspired approach to design. Some designers borrowed inspiration

from the iconic past, while others followed a material-based approach – where the entire design of a particular piece revolved around the material of choice. We bring you a taste of the very best of furniture designs that were presented at iSaloni this year.

Hermes Hermes’ Jean Michel Frank reeditions evoke the austere, avantegarde spirit of the 1920s. The bench, armchair and console – all handmade – consist of wrought iron and leather. Each piece has been crafted with a meticulous attention to detail; the bridle leather polished, tanned, patinaed and laced by hand so it is thick, smooth and supple. The wrought iron is transformed through as tedious a process, its rawness playing off the leather to create a perfect testament to Hermes-appointed savoir faire. Fendi Casa Fendi Casa’s Diagonal Sofa, designed by Toan Nguyen strikes the perfect balance between elegance, comfort and quality. Part of their Contemporary line, the low-seated, modular sofa features a play of clean lines and compact elements,

interpreting tradition with a modern twist. The sophisticated offering is both comfortable and sleek, and comes tailor-made in different versions: one in a thickened nabuk with raw-cut edges, in leather, or inlaid fabric with tone-on-tone or contrasting inserts, that add a playful twist to its modern, minimal lines. Poltrona Frau Poltrona Frau presents a re-edition of Gianfranco Frattini’s masterful Albero bookcase, designed at the end of the 50s. The selfsupporting, rotating, adjustable bookcase is a testament to Frattini’s attention towards the laws of static and dynamics, with four vertical uprights and two rack and pinions pylons at its two ends. These and the shelves are made in Canaletto walnut veneer, and can continued on page 2

continued from page 2 Moroso The Il Doge seat by Serenissima for Moroso pays homage to the heritage of Venice, inspired by the traditional platforms set up on hightide days. The seat consists of two lightweight, down-filled pads in Acqua Alta fabric that rest on the seat’s upholstered backs. Making for a comfortable nook to kick back in, the unconventional design of the Il Doge evokes the atmosphere of ageold Venice with a contemporary twist. It also reserves space for coffee tables with glass platforms. Molteni Molteni upgrades your workspace with their classic secretaire. Instead of a clunky, old-fashioned desk with drawers and filing cabinets, the Segreto is a compact triangular unit that can be suspended from the wall. The bottom section opens up to reveal tiny shelves and sections where you can neatly put away your paraphernalia. With the assistance of ingenious stay rods, the bottom part will then double as a top where you can work, or place your laptop.

DALA Loveseat by Stephen Burks is a plush, unpretentious and prodigious sunbed for some quality R&R

The space-saving unit is equipped with every modern multimedia connection, and comes in eucalyptus and American walnut finishes that will easily blend into any decor. Dedon Dedon’s ‘White Jungle’ collection is a dazzling outdoor collection underscored by luxury and comfort. Stephen Burks channels the laidback vibe of a tropical jungle reinterpreted with pristine, sophisticated whites. His DALA Loveseat, a new addition to his award-winning DALA collection, is a plush, unpretentious and prodigious sunbed, perfect for kicking back for some quality R&R. Tom Dixon Entitled ‘Club’, Tom Dixon’s new collection of furniture, lighting and accessories is a contemporary take on the British gentleman’s club of bygone eras. Drawing the essence of a plush, modern home away

from the concept of human beings embodied by creative images or objects. His aesthetics are a debate between formal impulsiveness, the possibilities possessed by materials, and the application of technology. His Duo vase, a perfect example of this, is a modular ceramic creation that comes in black or white. Cassina Cassina’sTorei collection, designed by Luca Nichetto, adds a playful dimension to any living room with their modern, art-deco-esque design. The graphic tables, first presented in 2012, have been reworked with all new finishes and shapes, akin to a colourful jigsaw puzzle. In addition to the rectangular model, the tables, whose structures are made of matte black metal, are now available in a square version with two new dimensions: triangular and round. The hollowed tray-top comes in Carrara marble for the square, and

in a bright stained red colour for the rectangular and round. The piece is flexible in design so it can be arranged in different heights and dimensions, or squared off into smaller structures. Magis After the roaring success of the Pina chair, Magis has introduced several different variations to the unique seating collection. Featuring a one-of-a-kind wire structure, the rocking chair has a padded pineapple pattern and adds a playful element to the concept of comfort. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, the extension is a piece of furniture that can be enjoyed by the young and old alike. While bringing back an age-old concept, Jaime Hayon rejuvenates the rocking chair’s characteristic heavy and antique image with clean lines and modern design. Moooi The ZLIQ Island by Marcel Wanders gives one the feeling of being on one’s own private island within the confines of the home. Made of three components, the island constitutes two ZLIQ sofas with a middle component between them. One can roll over the middle component to create a complete, self-contained seating area that allows total comfort and privacy. The sofa is made of a steel box frame covered with foam and

dacron, and comes with removable covers and seat cushions. Knoll David Adjaya has collaborated with Knoll in order to create the functional yet sculptural Wa s h i n g t o n Sk e l e t o n c h a i r, designed as a play between propping and balancing. The cantilevered chair is true to Knoll’s Bauhaus philosophy that pontificates that decor should complement and not compete with architecture. The seat features a unique leg design and a back drilled down to a fine geometrical lattice. The shell and legs are cast in three parts, and put together with mortise, tenon joinery and stainless steel fasteners, the perfect embodiment of Adjaya’s sculptural vision. Boca Do Lobo The Newton Lamp by Boca Do Lobo is a suspension light, designed with the highest quality materials in order to exude modern luxury. The handcrafted piece was put together through joinery and foundry, made with aluminum and plated with gold, but can be customised to any size or colour of choice. Authenticating Boca Do Lobo’s commitment to the artisan’s craft, the attention-grabbing piece combines timeless elegance with its bold character. Contact www.cosmit.it

Too many of us suffer in an office environment that is not well designed, and we make do with whatever furniture is afforded to us. But those in the know are aware that an effective, personalised w o rk s p a c e a n d i n t e l l i g e n t l y engineered office furniture makes all the difference to productivity and overall effectiveness. Here are some of the best players in the Indian market making work easier and comfortable. As workplace experts, they help people have a better work experience by providing new-age products, services and insights into thier life. Steelcase researchers studied how the physiology of work has changed and how the human body interacts with new technologies and how it transitions as people shift from one device to another. Each new activity caused people to change postures. Gesture is designed in response to Steelcase’s global research about changing postures in the workplace. Extraordinarily high quality, luxury materials and timeless designs; these are the perfect synonyms for Duravit

Duravit’s production facility is based in Tarapur, Gujarat which has been operational since 2010 and employs over 300 workers. The production facility was certified with EN ISO 9001:2008 and confirms the company’s adherence to customer orientation as a corporate objective, and keeps up to its commitment to customer satisfaction.

The plant has been setup in such a way that it is possible to scale up production and multiple expansions are possible. Though export houses tend to have such production facilities, CEO Dr. Frank Richter who inaugurated the company’s first design studio in Tarapur clarified that the sole intention of the state of the art facility is to serve public

demand. Along with Dr. Ritcher, Mr. Ashutosh Shah the company’s Managing Director was also present at the occasion. The first design studio is also the first of its kind in Asia and if company sources are to be believed more such showrooms will be opened in India. In the words of Ashutosh Shah,

the Managing Director, “Many of our retail partners across the country would like to present the product like we are trying to do today; the presentation of the product is really important for a luxury brand like Duravit.” The showroom unleashes Duravit’s designer range which consists of signature collections designed by well-known designers like Phillipe Starck, EOOS, Phoenix Design, Sieger Design and Matteo Thun. Duravit has been the proud recipient of numerous international design awards. These awards

celebrate bold design, which has become Duravit’s hallmark over the years. Secondly, each designer is a specialist in his field - a prominent global innovator with an inherent sense for design. Good design, as Duravit and its designers see it, is never at the expense of practicality - neither is interested in “design for

design’s sake.” “Duravit’s design trends are notable for their durable modern forms featuring a systematic reduction to the essentials. In addition we offer ideal solutions for different budgets and lifestyles,” said Mr. Ashutosh Shah, Managing Director of Duravit India. Duravit as a brand is more focused on providing complete bathroom solutions rather than stand-alone sanitary ware; the Living Bathroom range elucidates the fact. The Living Bathroom creates space for bathroom furniture. In the words of the CEO, Dr. Frank Richter, “We are interested in Living Bathrooms. We deal in complete bathroom solutions not just single pieces that are distributed somehow. Furniture provides the unique opportunity to realise this complete bathroom approach and furthermore it helps you to create a personal warm atmosphere where people will feel comfortable living in.”

So irrespective of the outlet from which it is purchased, a Duravit product will always reflect the same quality and design; in short a proper degree of homogeneity has been achieved. This point is validated further by the fact that the products produced in their Tarapur facility are also exported to the central warehouse in Germany. What makes the deal sweeter is that Duravit’s luxury products have different price points which gel well with a price sensitive market like India. An effective collaboration of design sensibilities and economics we would say! Contact www.duravit.in

A New Guard At RAK India With a newly devised strategy RAK focuses on expansion plans in the sanitary ware segment in India.

RAK Ceramics offers complete solutions for sanitaryware and continues to be a global pioneer in the world of ceramics through its innovative products

bath ware and 20 million pieces of tableware. Specialising in high-quality ceramic wall and floor tiles, Gres Porcellanato, and sanitary ware, RAK Ceramics uses more than 8,000 production models, with new designs added almost every week to its portfolio. Tiles are manufactured in a variety of sizes, from 10 cm x 10 cm up to 125 cm x 185 cm, the widest range offered in the ceramic field. We at The Inside Track met the new man in charge Mr. Santosh Nema, Chief Operating Officer, RAK Ceramics, India for a candid chat to discuss RAK’s plans for the Indian market. How would you rate the current health of the ceramic tile and sanitary ware market in India? The current health is brilliant across India. People are shifting from non-branded to known, branded products especially in the sanitary ware segment. In terms of our growth, it’s about 20% for sanitary ware while the industry is growing by 10-12%. Our tiles segment is also growing at 15% per annum. For the next five years there will be sufficient growth due to demand for housing, branded products and people moving towards better quality products.

You have recently taken charge of RAK India. What are some of the changes and new strategies you plan to implement? We have just a 2% market share in the 3,500 crores sanitary ware market. Hence, there is room to grow. That’s why we are focusing on the sanitary ware segment by introducing new products and diversifying in new markets. Right now, the South is getting us most of our sales. We have recently expanded our capacity from 1000 to 2000 pieces a day which have become operational from this month; next year, we will have about 3500 pieces. So there is a lot of focus on sanitary ware expansion. Also we are looking into a lot of allied products like concealed cisterns and wellness products. Globally, we are leading the tiles segment, but in India we are at the 5th position. So our target is to be number one in the next 4-5 years. What has been the response to RAK products in the Indian market? How do you plan to capture larger market share in the face of tough competition? The response is good as RAK is known for the quality of its products. Since we supply to 160 countries around the world, our standards

are the highest. We are the largest imported tile company in Europe. So the products we make in India are at par with international standards. Also we specialise in large format tiles like metre by metre. In UAE, we have recently installed a machine where we will be making 1.5metre x 3metre sizes. There are only four plants in the world which make tiles of that size. So we are known for technical superiority. Even architects and designers can vouch for our tiles as premium tiles. Our penetration to customers, brand building with customers is something we are focusing on right now. We will be launching our new campaign shortly in terms of promoting our products. We are also getting into experiential marketing which is where people can touch and feel the products which they are not able to do today. We are planning to go an aggressive spree of making such stores. And lastly we want to maintain our design leadership, so we our investing in design centres. Can you tell us something more about your design plans? Internationally there is a close partnership between ‘celebrated’ industrial designers and manufacturers - together they create a product. How does it work with RAK Ceramics? We have partnerships with lot of design houses of Europe and currently it is done centrally at UAE. Since you cater to the whole world, the choices in different regions are

Mr. Santosh Nema, Chief Operating Officer, RAK Ceramics, India

very different. Now we are creating a dedicated design house in India for Indian operations because India is the second largest market for us outside UAE and it is also a strategically important market for the RAK Group as a whole. So we are focusing on a design centre where designs are made only for India. What will be your marketing and distribution strategies? Any changes you plan on introducing? We have a lot of focus on experiential marketing where we will be doing a lot of in-shop displays, branding at the shops and making new stores. We will also be reaching out to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. A stated objective is that we also wish to have design leadership. What is the strength of the distribution network that you

currently have?

which we can’t make it here because of the volume of big format.

We h a v e a b o u t 4 0 0 m a s t e r distributors and 4000 sub dealers which we want to expand.

When you are talking about wellness products, is it going to be a separately carved out business unit?

Which are the areas/geographies of perceived growth for RAK in India? Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns and North India - because our manufacturing capacity has been in the South of India all this time. The North market includes only 12% of our total sales, whereas other companies range about 23-24%. That is going to be the next focused geography for us. Besides Tier2 and Tier 3 are across the country. But as a zone, it is the North zone which is a high consumption zone. We are going to have a production base somewhere in central India which will take about two years more to come to life. But before that we will have some joint ventures in Gujarat. To move products from the South to the North results in very high freight costs. What about new product

23

If you look at the profit spectrum of the products, tiles will come at the bottom, then you will have sanitary ware and then you will have the allied products. Since we are going from tile to allied, there will be a lot of seriousness. Do e s R A K UA E h a ve s o m e dedicated manufacturing for allied products?

development? What new products (or segments) can the market expect from RAK? In sanitary ware, there are a lot of new products including wellness products and the allied products

that we will get into. In tiles, we are looking at some different sizes because this is the market where different sizes give us an advantage. We will import from UAE and sell in India, the technically superior products which we get from UAE;

We have collaboration with Kludi - KludiRAK. We also have a plastic manufacturing unit. There is some dedicated manufacturing but we are also open to outsourcing. But yes we will develop wellness and allied products as a different unit. That will give us a lot of profit as also it will be a one stop solution. Contact web: www.rakceramics.com
