hen it comes to the material aspects of surfaces, innovation is the name of the game. It is only through the unique properties of certain materials that architects and interior designers can realise a brand new world of creative interiors. Hence the importance of the material

properties of surfaces is not to be underestimated. With this in mind, The Inside Track explores the most innovative materials across the globe that can be used on various surfaces – from
floors to ceilings, and everything in between. Luminoso – Wood + Light Luminoso is a patented material made by embedding fibre optics
between layers of solid wood with a specially formulated adhesive. The fibre optics transmit light through the panels, which allows static and moving images to be displayed through the wood.
The fibre optics allow natural or artificial light behind Luminoso to become visible on the other side. Blocking the light by using graphics (words, logos, shapes) behind Luminoso allows for the creation of customised effects. The wood has a completely closed surface (there are no holes) that can be finished with a solvent-based lacquer, oil, or a water-based stain to match the tone or finish of other design elements. It can be milled, cut and sanded. Luminoso is an internationally awarded material, having been presented the 2009 Red Dot Design Award for Product Design and the Gold iF Material Award in 2011. However the material is not suited for outdoor use and is intended for use in environments with relative humidity levels that are between 45%65%. It is thus ideal for indoor use in wall panels or floorings; particularly in commercial establishments like restaurants, theatres, retail, etc. continued on page 2
