merica’s leading faucet innovator, Delta Faucet Company, announced its entry last year into the fast growing Indian bathroom and kitchen fittings segment by launching its exclusive line of residential and commercial products. When Alex Manoogian - a young, entrepreneurial immigrant who was building his own company in the United States introduced the first single-handle faucet in 1954, he named it “Delta,” the Greek word for “change”. And appropriately so, because its design revolutionised the way people thought about water delivery. Since then, Delta Faucet Company has been committed to bringing new styles and innovation into the faucets category. Delta Faucet Company India Pvt. Ltd. (Delta India) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Delta Faucet Company USA (Delta) which is headquartered at Indianapolis. Delta is part of Masco Corporation, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of home improvement and building products. Founded by Masco in 1954 with the introduction of the single-handle faucet, Delta offers an extensive line of residential and commercial products, which incorporate style and innovation into faucets, showers and accessories. Delta has already

Brizo meets the evolved demand for aesthetics and performance with a collection of distinctively designed faucets and related products that create a fashion statement in the home. Innovations like Touch 2 O, H 2 Okinetic and the Diamond Seal technology are a testament to the brand’s commitment to provide better and smarter ways to experience water. H2Okinetic showers use proprietary technology to deliver a denser, warmer shower with less water. While the Touch2O technology can turn faucets on and off with just a touch. Delta’s Activtouch ergonomic handle and three spray-selection buttons let you choose up to eight spray options with just a push of a button. From a full, drenching spray to a concentrated massage spray, it also adds a custom touch to any shower. The Palm Shower on the other hand offers simple, one-handed operation and slides easily into the palm of your hand with a rubberised grip to hug your hand securely. With water conservation high on the agenda, Delta’s bath fittings provide the option of utilising water optimally and thus Delta shower heads and hand showers that meet the U.S. WaterSense label requirements use between 20 and 40% less water than the industry standard (1.5 or 2.0 gpm versus the standard of 2.5 gpm), while their lavatory faucets that meet WaterSense requirements use 32% less (1.5 gpm versus the standard of 2.2gpm). In the kitchen, Delta Faucet’s EZ Anchor mounting assembly allows you to install the faucet from above the deck with no need to tighten it under the sink. The MagnaTite docking keeps the kitchen pull-down spray wand firmly in place with a powerful

integrated magnet, so it stays docked when not in use. Delta faucets are equipped with Touch-Clean soft, rubber nubbins that allow you to easily wipe away calcium and lime build-up with the touch of a finger. Since its launch last year, Delta Faucet’s focus on technology, innovation and design have borne fruit. Mr. Ravi Nindwani confirms, “The response to our premium brand Delta’s meaningful innovations and our luxury brand Brizo’s very unique designs has been very encouraging we will end the year with 25 of the strongest dealer partnerships in the country and quite a few premium project orders.” The unique and technology driven water experiences by Delta - touted as their USP - are being well-appreciated in India and consumers can look forward to an interesting product mix in 2014 too. For those who want to get their hands on these modish products, they are available in 25 showrooms across 13 Indian cities Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Baroda, Indore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Mr. Ashok Gangar says, “We wanted to provide hands-on familiarity to interior designers and architects and introduce to them the concept of LED products and associated lighting plans. Besides, as India grapples with challenges related to energy deficiency, LED lighting technology would be highly effective in saving energy and reducing pollution.” Here’s a showroom that underwent meticulous contemplation to come up with a never seen before display outlet; it’s no wonder that Anchor Electricals is coming up with similar centres across India.

Mr. Gangar adds, “Our next LED lighting showroom will be in Bangalore and we will continue expanding to other major cities in India and hope to increase to 1,000 stores including distributor and dealer stores by around FY2015. We will open four distributor stores in Mumbai and gradually spread out to other main urban areas.” Besides offering consumers and lighting experts in India safe and reliable lighting solutions, Anchor also aims to bridge the awareness and experience gap that exists and apply the same lighting business experience

developed in Japan, for India as well by introducing high-quality LED lighting products. However, it also takes notice of the special considerations required for the Indian market. “The product development for India was conducted by the planning and development division in Japan, after which the design and specifications were evaluated in India prior to commercialisation. While the design and module is the same as the products for the Japanese market, we have been able to reduce costs through consolidated production. The design

of the attachment and connection for the power has been changed to meet local specifications,” Mr. Gangar elaborates. India is one of the most important and strategic markets for Panasonic globally. Having set a base in the consumer electronic business, the company now has a renewed focus on the B2B and B2G business aiming to secure 8% revenue from its enterprise business. The company aims at bringing in a new lighting culture to India and introduce advanced technologies and designs. Contact tel: 022 30418888 web: www.anchor-world.com

teelcase, one of the global leaders in the office furniture industry, unveiled Gesture, one of the world’s first ergonomic office chairs designed to support one’s interactions with today’s technologies. This makes India a part of Steelcase’s global launch of Gesture.

A New Gesture By Steelcase Steelcase brings Gesture to India - inspired by global studies on new body postures and driven by the mobile technology. BY ULKA VARTAK

Gesture’s core interface hugs the lower back when people recline to scroll on a tablet screen

Gesture was inspired by studying the movements of the human body and created for the ways people work today. For 100 years, Steelcase Inc. has helped create great experiences for the world’s leading organisations - wherever work happens. “We love our technology - it’s become an ubiquitous extension of ourselves. The user interface is intuitive and responds to various gestures. But what about gesture recognition for the human body? The way technology impacts our bodies as we work has been largely ignored,” stated James Ludwig, Vice President of Global Design for Steelcase. Steelcase recently conducted a global study in 11 countries, including emerging markets like China, observing over 2,000 people in a wide range of environments and postures. The study revealed how new technologies and new workplace behaviours have led to nine new postures not supported by current office chairs which frequently cause pain and long-term

injuries, disrupting concentration and creativity. Gesture is designed as a response to this research effort. “Tablets were introduced just three years ago. But many people are using chairs that were designed well before these new devices became pervasive at work. Back then, chairs were created to help people hold one pose in front of a computer all day. Now we know that people need to move and change positions regularly, especially as they engage with new technologies. We observed people in pain, they need a sitting experience designed for the ways we work today,” added Mr. James Ludwig. Steelcase researchers studied how the physiology of work has changed, how the human body interacts with new technologies and how it transitions as people shift from one device to another. Researchers noted a more extreme range of human sizes around the world, which impacts postures. The company also studied the changing sociology of work and how people rapidly shift between individual, focused tasks and creative collaboration. Each new activity

caused people to change postures. Steelcase identified nine new tech driven postures based entirely on the result of new technologies. Technology (small and mobile) allows people to pull back from their desks while they use it. In the Draw posture, they recline, signaling they’re contemplating or absorbing information and draw

surface, people must keep their head a certain distance above the tablet in order to see it, and position their head to look down at it. The Smart Lean posture is the result of mobile devices that create the desire for people to temporarily “pull away” from others used for glancing at incoming texts or e-mails without leaving a meeting or collaborative environment. The Trance posture was observed when people were focused on the screen and either mousing or using a touchpad to navigate on the screen for extended periods of time. In the Take It In posture, people recline to view content on the large display and/or sit back to contemplate. This posture is about “taking in” information rather than generating it. It embraces a broad range of body sizes and easily adapts to meet the needs of each individual user, which is critical in an increasingly global business environment that has to support diverse workers than ever before. Today’s workers are driven by their vision - small technologies have a gravitational force to pull the body down. Steelcase has also established 3 Work Life Centres in India - the company’s flagship showrooms in New Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Steelcase will be soon inaugurating its 4th Worklife Centre in Mumbai. Gesture is a system of interconnected parts - inspired by the human body and designed to support every movement

Steelcase identified nine new postures based entirely on the way people use new devices and technologies

the device closer to their body to maintain an optimal focal length. The Multi-Device posture is formed when a person uses one hand to hold a phone to the ear and the other to task on a laptop. The result is a forward lean that is a symbol of concentration and an orientation to the smaller screen of a laptop. Smartphones require unique postures. In the Text posture, workers bring arms in close as keying and gesturing are performed. People recline, bring up their feet onto the seat, and draw their smartphone or tablet close, resting on their thighs. The result is the Cocoon posture small mobile technology that allows people to remain productive in this posture. The Swipe posture results when the device is used on a work surface in the “surfing mode”, in which people operate the device with one hand, typically with swiping gestures. Because it’s on a work

the surface. Since the back and neck cannot sustain the reach and hunch posture for a long time, the person begins to prop themselves up with their non-tasking arm. Based on this research, Steelcase designed Gesture’s three key interfaces - the core interface, upper limb interface and seat interface to support new postures driven by new technology and more casual behaviours in the workplace. Gesture encourages motion rather than forcing the body to hold a single posture. The upper limb interface allows people to draw closer to a work surface to avoid hunching over a screen and easily move close to the body to support texting postures. Unlike conventional chairs, Gesture’s core interface hugs the lower back when people recline to scroll on a tablet screen. The seat interface adjusts rapidly to help users avoid perching on the edge of their chair.

We are looking at various options right now.” The brand intends to go across India with these current two segments, and is aiming to expand across geographies rather than expand its product line. aesthetic value within the scope of the international design world. The annual event not only shone a spotlight on smart solutions and inventive design that offered new promising perspectives, but was also host to a number of events,

workshops, exhibitions and seminars spread across the city. The estimated 250,000 turnout is just an indicator of the admirable response the event received. To help navigate this design extravaganza, the entire city of Eindhoven was carved into three main areas namely, the Strijp, Innercity and East. Other sites were just outside these areas. We bring you a glimpse into some of the most captivating creations at the Dutch Design Week. The Kazerne, a historic Military barracks contained a pop-up luxury restaurant with work from a number of small furniture producers and designers. Mirrors and lighting dominated here, each playing with surface, colour and gradients in new ways. Here, Amsterdam designers Studio Drift presented a series of colour-mixing LED lamps with hand-blown glass domes. The Nola series comprises tinted glass bell-jars fitted into circular cork bases, with a ring of LEDs in a contrasting colour under the rim of each glass piece. Sabine Marcelis and Brit van Nerven’s mirrors curiously played with light in differing ways, either by darkening the image with special

treatments and gradients, varying the thickness of the glass, or applying the mirror in stripes. It’s a bench where you could recharge yourself and your smartphone, tablet or notebook. Its seat contains solar panels, which convert sunlight into 230 Volts outlets and USB ports which can be used for charging smartphones,

he CII-Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), in its endeavour to further advance the green building movement in India, annually organises the Green Building Congress, one of Asia’s largest green building conferences and exhibitions. The Green Building Congress is held in different parts of the country to facilitate the spread of the concept across India. The event provides a unique platform for the stakeholders to share, network and explore newer opportunities, which in turn will facilitate the spread of the green building movement in the country. The 11th edition of Green Building Congress 2013 which was held from 24 - 26 October 2013 at Chennai, evoked an excellent response from participants and visitors. This year, the event focused on ‘futuristic green habitats and technologies’. In this regard, presentations and discussions were weaved around the theme. The Green Building Congress 2013 featured major programmes

India has over 2,235 IGBC registered green building projects, amounting to over 1.65 billion sq. ft. of green building footprint, making India one of the top three countries with such a high footprint. The next 10 years will be the decade of integrated sustainable built structures with the advent of large integrated townships, satellite cities, communities and campuses with multiple buildings. Reducing environmental impact and adopting environment friendly construction practices is the need of the hour to address the dire climatic changes. Mr. N. K. Ranganath, Chairman, Green Building Congress 2013 Conference Committee commented, “It is a huge challenge to manage our resources now and the environmental degradation would be irreversible if we did not act now.”

A n u r a g Sa rd a a l o n g w i t h Aakanksha Rajhans and Vedang Kulkarni also received an Honourable Mention for another design, the ‘Acuwake’: a sock that gently wakes you up with an acupressure massage! Acuwake Sock is a massaging sock that functions as an alarm. It gives you a rejuvenating wake-up call helping you to gradually and smoothly come out of your sleep and start your morning without

a blaring alarm. It wakes you up with temperature controlled micro vibrators, which massage your feet with increasing intensity at particular acupressure points. This revitalises organs such as the heart and intestines, as well as the spine. Acuwake Sock is your very own personal sleep manager operated with a mobile app. The only way to switch off the ‘alarm’ is getting out of bed and standing on your feet. The pressure created by your body weight triggers the deactivation of alarm. There is a basic fifteenminute snooze time in which the vibrators go on and off in different intensity cycles. The intensity of the vibrations keeps increasing with the time elapsed. A mini console is connected to your mobile via Bluetooth which controls the duration and intensity of the vibrations. It also has a small digital screen and allows for basic settings. The battery charging

The app also has a connectivity feature that allows to be triggered by a person you choose to activate your Acuwake Sock to wake you up.
