A Lab For Life In Mumbai

The BMW Guggenheim Lab travels around the world to inspire and share ideas related to urban living with the aim of creating a forward-thinking vision for city life.

The BMW Guggenheim Lab located at the Museum in the Byculla Zoo complex is a place to explore new ideas, discuss and debate urban initiatives, with the ultimate goal of helping create a forward-thinking vision for city life

Guggenheim Lab that aims at exploring the relationship between ‘privacy and public spaces’ in Mumbai. The study initiated by Pukar is just one of the many projects currently underway at the BMW Guggenheim Lab headquartered at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum near the Mumbai zoo in Byculla. Open in Mumbai till the 20th of January, 2013, the BMW Guggenheim Lab aims to explore ideas about public spaces and city life. It seeks to address local and global issues on a range of topics that include urbanism, architecture, art, design, science, technology, education and sustainability.

This globetrotting lab (it was launched in New York and has since been to Berlin) is led by an international multi-disciplinary team who have planned a string of daily events that aim at examining contemporary urban life peculiar to Mumbai and its social fabric. While the Lab in Byculla is where a lot of the events are planned, satellite locations like Horniman Circle, Priyadarshini Park, Sambaji Park in Mulund, the Batliboy Compound near Cotton Green and the Mahim Beach is where some activities are also being staged to ensure that this effort engages with communities that reside in other parts of the city. An interesting activity that takes place every Thursday at the Museum is a Mapping Survey that aims to discover where people find or create their own personal space (outside their home) in a dense city like Mumbai.
