The design fraternity too had their plates full with a packed agenda of creative events. The exhibit Bathroom Excellence 1998/2012ADI Design Index@Cersaie 2013 explored the evolution of bathroom furnishings from 1998 to 2012, showcasing more than 160 products created by over 80 companies. While the ironic, irreverent face of design, Ito Morabito (known as Ora-Ïto) presented the Ora-Ïto Design event at Cersaie’s Architecture Gallery. Architect Rafael Moneo was the fifth consecutive Pritzker prize winner to give a keynote lecture at Cersaie’s ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’
symposium. While Late Paolo Soleri, the Italian architect and urban designer who conceived Arcosanti, the prototypical experimental city in Arizona and was the first to discuss the concept of “arcology”, a discipline which integrates ecology with architecture was given a tribute in the form of a documentary and an open floor discussion on his life and achievements. The commercial side of the Ceramic trade was also in sharp focus. A series of meets discussed the future of the industry and highlighted areas of growth and opportunity from a global perspective. While the continued crisis in the domestic Italian construction market has led to a decline in consumption of Ceramic tiles (for the fifth year running), the difficulties experienced by the Italian industry contrasted sharply with the outstanding performance of companies controlled by Italian groups but operating outside Italy. Companies owned by Italian groups operating in other countries enjoyed a very productive year. The process of internationalising manufacturing operations to serve
local markets continued resulting in a total of 116.1 million square metres sold in the country of production, accounting for 82% of the total, while 25.4 million sq.m. was exported to other countries (+17.59%). The turnover of the companies located
outside Italy but owned by Italian ceramic groups reached 1,195 million euros in 2012 which was up by +14.34%. Contact email: cersaie@cersaie.it web: www.cersaie.it

An audience with diverse disciplines though connected by a common love for design wait - you are at the mostanticipated event at Cersaie, the cultural programme ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ which is a medium for design gurus to share, retrospect, collaborate and discuss the most topical issues in the field of architecture and design. Since its inception in 2009, this event has come a long way and made Cersaie a platform for theoretical discussions; an opportunity to debate the most topical issues of contemporar y design and t o e xc h a n g e i d e a s w i t h t h e w o r l d’s m o s t re n ow n e d a n d innovative designers. In these last four years, ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ has hosted hundreds of speakers, predominantly from the world of building design and including almost a dozen Pritzker award winners, emerging Italian and international architects and designers, university professors and academicians. Dozens of technical and broader cultural themes have been addressed, from architecture and design to ceramics. The first day at the festival saw an intense discussion between eminent designers and architects like Stefano Mirti, Elio Caccavale, Alberto Lacovoni, Laura Negrini, Ko Sliggers and more on ‘Ceramic Futures: From poetry to science fiction’. Renowned for his cuttingedge structures like the Cervantes
Theatre in Mexico City and the Museum of America in Salamanca, award-winning Spanish architect and founder of Studio Ensamble, AntónGarcía-Abril also gave a mesmerising speech at Cersaie. Late Paolo Soleri, the Italian architect and urban designer, was honoured at the programme by way of a documentary and an open floor discussion on his life’s achievements.

The Think Tank Of Design Running into its fifth year at Cersaie, ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ offers a platform for discussing the latest in contemporary architecture.
Ora Ito, the French designer at Building, Dwelling, Thinking. The underlying philosophy behind his work is Simplexity, and his design language can be described as minimal with organic techno-futuristic elements
Over the next three days, various design connoisseurs offered their rich inputs while becoming the international point of reference for the latest news on ceramic materials for use in architecture and bathroom furnishings. Spanish architect Rafael Moneo delivered this year’s keynote lecture on why buildings must always be interconnected with the urban fabric that surrounded it. “Architecture cannot be considered free from context. Each work must be seen
as the substance of what we call a city,” he said. Throughout his extraordinary career, Moneo has earned a reputation for order, linearity, precision and a quest for modernity. Another interesting feature at ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ was a tribute to female creativity with a focus on design, research and innovation. A day event was
devoted to internationally renowned architects Carla Juaçaba, Izaskun Chinchilla and Sarah Robinson, who have followed very different career paths yet, are united by their original stylistic explorations and multi-disciplinary approach. Through its thought-provoking conferences and seminars on contemporary architecture by international figures,‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ at Cersaie seems to have transformed into a separate entity altogether. Antoniolupi’s New Take On Walls
The Affreschi wall paper collection by Antoniolupi is inspired by Michelangelo’s David, a symbol of beauty, force and vigour. The wall paper has been manufactured using the latest technology wherein the ornate decoration on the wallpaper (often related to the past) is obtained through a transfer. This method involves the direct transfusion of the pigments of the drawing made on the computer to the wall paper; the pigments are
introduced through the pores of the plaster as it happens in the traditional fresco technique. The graphics presented in the different collections are characterised by a blend of visual compositions of different styles including artistic pieces typical of Renaissance, details of bright crystals, numerical matrixes, etc. All in all an amalgam of figures without time which can be adapted to virtually any house. It also has an interior design cell that works on premium projects of 10,000+ square feet; this section is looked at closely by Mayank. Apartment 9 has 4 factories (3 textile and 1 leather) in Noida which produce custom furniture for the brand and also for Andrew Martin, an uber English brand for fabrics, wallpapers and accessories. They also have an association with Lizzo, a Spanish luxury fabric brand (Apartment 9 also showcases its work at the trend-setting Maison&Objet exhibition in Paris). The firms keen eye and various associations have enabled the product anthology available at the store to include the likes of fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, lighting, carpets, accessories, books, art and leather. Apartment 9’s newest collection
of fabrics, which was unvieled at Maison&Objet, Paris in September, goes by the name of ‘Indi’ - inspired by the ottoman and textile history of India. The Indian collection re-invents the paisley (ambi) in a simplistic, traditional, Indian yet modern way. Reinforced by floral motifs in circular patterns and fine intricate embroideries, this collection is exquisite and an ode to our great textile heritage. Their Persian inspired line consists of stunning fabrics echoing intricate patterns, graceful arches, majestic domes and delicate lattice work. True to its feel, this collection is made in gold and turquoise and exudes a refinement that is a great source of inspiration. Another popular collection by the brand, ‘Anikinni’, gets its inspiration from the vibrant textiles of the Indian subcontinent that furiously vie with the gorgeous age old traditional block prints and embroideries. Hettich caters to office, residential and kitchen and bath segments with over 10,000 products for different needs and budgets. Their offerings include hinges, drawers, drawer runners, folding and sliding systems, lighting in furniture, handles, etc. Hettich products offer the right functionalities with a range of design options for modular furniture and aim to combine performance, aesthetics and efficient use of space. With India being recognised as an extremely prospective growth market, Hettich recently announced its plans to invest Rs. 500 crores in India over the next five years. On the sidelines of this momentous and significant announcement, Dr. Andreas Hettich, Global CEO of Hettich, shared with The Inside Track some insights on Hettich’s future plans. Can you share with us some details of this new investment decison? India is a growing market and the per capita consumption of furniture in the country is expected to increase in line with the western world. We see a very bright future here and are investing substantially to develop the market. We are looking at India not only as a growing market, but also as a manufacturing destination offering the advantages of a sound legal system

manufacturing plant in Vadodara, Hettich plans to have a sharper India focus and invest close to Rs. 500 crores. BY ULKA VARTAK and well entrenched democratic political setup besides a huge talent pool to manage complex engineering and production processes. Besides this, India has the potential to become a very efficient base for servicing our nearby growing markets in South Asia and Middle East. The market size in this segment is about Rs. 3,500 crores and is growing at a rate of around 15% p.a. Considering the potential that India and the aforementioned regions hold, the company has set up a manufacturing plant in Vadodara, which will not only serve customers in South Asia and Middle East but also its subsidiaries in other geographies. Hettich India has already invested Rs. 100 crores in the Vadodara plant which will manufacture certain select products, starting with wire baskets as its first manufacturing product. What are the unique features of Cargo Tech baskets that will appeal to Indian sensibilities? The unique feature of our Cargo Tech wire baskets is the design concept because it is very flexible and you can adjust it to your needs. It is not just a fixed basket; you can design it to your specific needs as per what you want to store in it. Second is the product technology. We have fully automatic plating lines, so we provide a very special surface accompanied by a 10 year guarantee to give a completely rust free performance. Above all it is
a life time guarantee because of our confidence in our products. But if you need additions or alterations, we have a wide network of dealers or you may even go to the application centres where you can get plenty of ideas; we also have internet design services. If there is a failure of a product there is also a free replacement policy. Dr. Andreas Hettich, Global CEO - Hettich
also an environment friendly product. The Cargo Tech is made up of stainless steel and is designed with a modular approach with more than 500 options in 6 types of baskets. How will this new plant help Hettich’s position in the Indian and Asia Pacific market? It definitely adds a new product category but is still in our core. So it is mainly drawer systems and that come with our slides -ball bearing or quadro. It is a clear commitment that we are aiming for the special needs of the Indian market. How a re He t t i c h p r o d u c t s differentiated from other conventional solutions? We spend 250 crores in research and development every year and apply for around 100 patents every year. So our products are state of the art engineered products as also our production technology gives a very innovative quality standup product at an affordable price. We are not just selling to the premium market but also to the mid market; we always offer a range of products at different price points. How does the company handle after sale service?
Hettich’s manufacturing plant in Vadodara will serve customers in India, South Asia and Middle East along with its markets in other geographies
To a certain extent, there is not much after sales service because our products are really very durable and we provide
With the current one product in production and six more in line, how many more products do you plan to incorporate at the new plant? We are investing step by step. We will add another product category in the next year and another in the year after that. Our production philosophy is that we are producing a product line only at one place in the world because of economies of scale and then distribute from there. Also the plant in Vadodara is not only for the local market but also for the export market. If you look at the baskets, these are very popular in the Asian markets. What has been the response from the Indian market thus far and how do you forsee your future here? The response was excellent. We have a very high growth success story here. We are just seeing the Indian market at the tipping point now and its moving more and more towards modular furniture and modular kitchens. The whole construction industry is going more and more in this direction so it is not just the growth of the Indian economy itself but it’s about a higher share of the modular kitchens market. We are also pushing in that direction by offering all our services by not just selling the product but also providing all the education and design service. Our customers come to us because they simply want the best in quality modular furniture. Contact web: www.hettich.com/in
