T

he bathroom and sanitation industry is undergoing an enormous transformation, both in developed and developing countries. While growing markets like India and China are changing their attitudes towards bathroom spaces, developed ones in Europe are becoming more aware of the changing needs of their population. Either way, there is no better platform to track the heartbeat of the bathroom segment than this year’s ISH. Here are some of the top trends in bathroom design for the coming year. Living in the Bathroom Furniture and fittings are probably the most eye-catching elements in the bathroom. But when it comes to the quality and design of these products, the focus is no longer merely on the robustness required to ensure a long product lifespan. Today’s bathroom furniture is also in line with the latest trend towards a snugger bathroom that is more like a living space. The bathroom is increasingly becoming home to furnishing items like carpets, armchairs or sofas that are more traditionally found in the living room. This megatrend will be dominating the interior design of this space for the next few years. Top-quality furniture finishes, wood-textured tiles, beige hues, warm colours and exclusive accents like the latest metal effects, rounded edges and cosy textiles can be used to turn the space into a trendy living-bath-room. Wood, in particular is the material that is most in vogue. But Italian manufacturers in particular are also pinning their hopes on the current luxury trend, using marble, gold

The current revival of hydrotherapy in Europe has influenced the health spa trend in bathrooms

and metallic effects for premium tiles to bring an exclusive lifestyle feeling to the bathroom. Barrier-free Accessibility and Agefriendly Design Many European countries have an aging population. Anybody who has experienced physical limitations for any length of time is well aware that the bathroom is a key factor for ensuring long-term independence.

Separating products from the wall could provide interior design with totally new approaches for planning snug living-bath-rooms

Because they help people remain self-sufficient for as long as possible, products like a level-entry shower and ergonomically designed controls are becoming increasingly popular, even among able bodied bathroom users. It’s often the little things that decide whether a person can continue to live in a safe home or need to move into residential care - like a grab rail in the right place, an innovative hand shower with an additional handle for easier

use, a touchless faucet, a shower toilet or simply a nightlight that shows the way to the bathroom. Easy Cleaning Hygiene has become a selling point in Europe after being popular for some time in Asia and U.S.A. The demand for hygienic finishes and products such as innovative ceramic or glass finishes, rimless toilets or shower toilets has started

increasing. Even fittings that can simply be detached from the water connection and put in the dishwasher when they need a t h o ro u gh c l e a n h a ve been developed. Control with a Finger-swipe Among numerous innovations in the field of ‘digital water control’, Germany is undoubtedly the trailblazer when it comes to the digitisation of the bathroom. The targeted selection of various water modes, programmes and individual functions in the shower and elsewhere has been made possible. The field of bathroom lighting is now rapidly gaining ground as well. Thanks to modern LED technology, light can be used to emotionalise the bathroom and take its spatial quality to a whole new level. Electricity is also needed for the numerous touch-free fittings that are now becoming increasingly popular in private homes as well. Personal Health Spa Scientific studies have shown that water has a positive impact on

more ailments than was previously believed. The current revival of Kneipp hydrotherapy treatments in European countries will influence private bathrooms as well. For dedicated followers of this practice, it might even be worthwhile installing two tubs or pools so that they can alternate effortlessly between warm

and cold baths. When planning their bathrooms, health-conscious house owners should therefore take into consideration the various water treatment options available. The Bathroom of the Future The functional use of bathrooms is not the only trend that has the

13

industry buzzing. Technical and technological innovations have led to greater focus on the needs of the bathroom’s users. Separating products from the pipe system and their resulting architectural liberation from the wall could provide interior design with some totally new approaches for planning snug living-bath-rooms. A shower toilet linked to the Internet could even evolve into a discreet health centre that uses sensors to measure health data and send it straight to the doctor. And applications like in-floor sensor systems can control lighting and sound the alarm if somebody falls in the bathroom. Now that the bathroom is gaining so much importance in people’s lives, there is a trend towards exploring new forms of bathing culture. Semipublic baths tested in pilot projects could provide an added value for densely built detached housing developments with limited space - enhancing not just their appeal for the community itself but the attractiveness of the property too. h e I n d i a n c o n s u m e r s’ changing perception towards bathrooms has led to the growing demand for aesthetic, well designed bath spaces.

Tile It Right Picking the perfect tiles for your bathroom can be overwhelming, but knowing your needs is half the battle won. BY ALYSSA LOBO

Natural stone tiles look good but require constant care and maintenance

Consequently there has been a lot of attention paid to luxury bath fittings like bathtubs, shower heads, etc. However one must not underestimate the importance of an elementary bathroom component like tiling. The right tiles can contribute tremendously to the ambiance of a bathroom. When choosing bathroom tiles, it is important to keep in mind the users and their particular needs. Is the bathroom going to be used by the elderly? Then non-slip tiles are essential. If it is a child’s bathroom, then water proofing is the main concern, given children’s tendency to splash about. Most Indian bathrooms are wet unlike those in the West. So it’s important to choose tiles that are non-porous in nature with a very low water absorption capacity. The longer

the water stays on the tile surface, higher is the tendency for dirt to get absorbed. Since it’s not always possible to immediately wipe clean the moisture, check the water absorption by weight ratio before buying a tile. The recommended number is less than three per cent. Most brands publish this as part of the product’s technical specifications. Durability is an important aspect to consider when tiling for Indian bathrooms. You can decide on how durable your tiles need to be, based on the amount of usage you anticipate. Natural stone tiles are the best looking but require constant care and maintenance, apart from being very expensive. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are the best for a bathroom that will be used by many people.

Smaller tile sizes require more grouting and are difficult to clean

One way to check how durable your tiles are is to look at the PEI scale rating of the product. You can then determine which tiles are suitable choices for your application by using the rating system. The PEI scale rates the surface of a tile from Class 1 to Class 5 (one being the least resistant to abrasion and five the most resistant). While any tile can be used on the wall, floor tiles take a lot of abuse and need to be manufactured to withstand this wear and tear. For light traffic on residential floors, a Class 2 or greater is a good choice, but for higher traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms a Class 3 or greater will hold up the best.

you opt for a floor tile with a design or pattern on it, the size of the tile is not dependent on the size of the bathroom. However large tiles with a contrasting design look out of place in a very small bathroom. Compared to the other factors, colour may seem like the least important measure when choosing tiles. Yet it is an aspect of bathroom design that cannot be ignored. In the end, it is the physical appearance of the tile that defines the mood in the bathroom. It is also a very personal choice. Thus it is important to consider carefully what ambience you hope to achieve in your bathroom.

Use a contrasting light coloured wall tile with dark floor tiles

A nother i mp or tant fa ct or to consider is the size the tiles used. The standard size for floor tiles a few years earlier was 300 mm x 300mm (roughly 1x1 sq. foot). This meant more grout area, or the joint between tiles. The gaps between ceramic tiles filled with white cement are what get dirty the most because of discoloration from dirt. This means a greater effort to keep the bathroom clean. The market is inundated with a wide range of choices of 600 mm x 600 mm (roughly 2 x 2 sq. ft.) floor tiles. Nitco, Kajaria, Somany and most leading tile brands have sizes closer to these dimensions. This would mean less grouting area and easier clean up. Unless

For a floor that doesn’t show dirt, a darker tile is preferable, maybe in a rusty colour or dark blue. To ensure the room doesn’t look small, use a contrasting light coloured wall tile. Dark tiles throughout will make it look cramped and small. In the case of remodelling, where the wall tiles will remain the same, it is better to choose a floor colour that goes well with the existing colour scheme. Another possibility is covering the entire height of your wall with tiles. Most bathroom walls are tiled to a height of seven feet to better combat moisture. But when it comes to tile colour, the most number one rule is to let your imagination go wild and experiment. Contact www.racold.com

Their award winning project is the Lali Gurans orphanage and library in Kathmandu- the world’s first seismic proof self-sustainable orphanage and full public library. The project, situated 10 kilometres from Kathmandu, is designed as a Ziggurat and was conceived by Hilary Sample and Michael Meredith of MOS Architects, New York. In the event of any significant seismic activity in the area the structure can be used as a shelter for the local population of 40, 000 residents. In an area lacking basic infrastructure, this project utilizes low-technology renewable energy and material resources, thus significantly reducing operating costs. It also invests in indigenous workmanship by using local construction techniques and materials. The project includes vertical gardens and permaculture providing thermal insulation as well as food for cooking. It will provide a non-institutional atmosphere, making educational resources readily available, and create a healthy co-dependence between the orphanage and the local community. Despite being about 50 per cent complete, the project has hit a wall in funding and resources. T

he Bollywood movie ‘Margarita with a Straw’ focuses on the experiences of a teenaged girl with cerebral palsy as she strives to realise her dreams and ambitions. We witness her struggles as she navigates the ‘abled’ world, doing everyday things with difficulty while discovering herself. Over the past few years there has been a growing movement to make public spaces more accessible to the differently abled through design changes in both buildings and transport. Hence there is a growing concern for designers and constructors to create spaces that are more accessible to those who are disabled. Barrier-free movement is essential in bathrooms, especially for the differently-abled. Such bathrooms will not only help those with disabilities, but also other special needs persons such as senior citizens and those with infirmities. Most people associate barrier-free bathrooms with a small, “disabledfriendly” tiled room with grab rails, a minimalist ambience and hospital furniture type fittings. There is much more to barrier-free accessibility than the specifications laid out in the relevant standards. It starts with an open, spacious design that can be adapted to lots of different individual interests and makes allowances for future care situations with level access showers and modern features like sensor-controlled fittings and lighting systems, programmable water settings or easy-care finishes. Particularly the bathroom for the older age group will feature just as much design and convenience as “normal bathrooms” - but probably even more assistive technology and systems.

Exceptional Bathrooms For Special Needs Major players are pushing the boundaries of innovation to make bathrooms more accessible for the elderly and differently abled. BY ALYSSA LOBO

Villeroy&Boch’s collections are contemporary in design and comply with standard DIN 18040 barrier-free constructions

Thankfully several companies have taken up the challenge to design barrierfree bathrooms that are functional, yet have aesthetic appeal. At this year’s ISH, the German Sanitary Industry Association’s trend platform, ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ explored the requirements the bathroom will have to meet in future. Pop up my Bathroom’s current “Freibad” campaign

Villeroy & Boch - Omnia Architectura Vita’s patented gripping groove along the edge of the lid ensures easy and hygienic handling

aims to encourage people to question boundaries and eliminate them - not just in terms of breaking down barriers but in the sense of tackling seemingly fixed usage concepts for the bathroom as well. There is much more to the idea of freedom in the bathroom than barrier-free accessibility: it involves ergonomics, multifunctionality and aesthetics too. Through their Best

Ager concept bathroom, Pop up my Bathroom hopes to develop bathrooms that would cater to the needs of the consumer at every stage of their life. “Our goal shouldn’t just be to make barrier-free bathrooms more attractive and functional,” says Jens J. Wischmann, M.D. of the German Sanitary Industry Association, “but to design them as ‘normal’ bathrooms. In an inclusive society, the distinction between ‘normal’ and ‘barrier-free’ will become less pronounced.” Level-access showers and enough space to ensure freedom of movement are the basic prerequisites for allowing elderly people (and those with disabilities) to furnish their bathrooms in a way that accommodates not just their individual preferences but their future needs as well. At ISH 2015, Villeroy & Boch unveiled their latest bathroom solutions that combine barrier-free functionality with comfort and design through their O.novo Vita and Omnia Architectura Vita collections. Both collections are contemporary in design and comply with the standard DIN 18040 barrierfree constructions.

O.novo Vita - functionality in modern design The O.novo Vita collection has a contemporary design with clear lines and symmetrical forms. The collection’s special dimensions and functionalities enable attractive, barrier-free bathrooms to be designed for almost any room situation. O.novo Vita bathroom sinks are available in 55 cm and 60 cm sizes, have a projection of 55 cm and offer legroom of at least 30 cm. This makes it possible to sit comfortably in front of the sink or to accommodate a wheelchair underneath. Gripping grooves under the sink can be used to hold on to, or to pull oneself up to the sink. The broad rim provides an additional stabilisation aid. The 80 cm bathroom sink, with a projection of 55 cm and legroom of at least 30 cm is also wheel chair compatible. Handles integrated in the ceramic at the front of the sink on the right and left-hand side make it easier for users to pull themselves towards the sink and can also be used as towel holders. Above the handles the sink provides broad, ceramic shelf spaces for placing all items you require within easy reach. O.novo Vita also offers various WC solutions for different requirements. These include two standing WCs, available as wash-down or wash-out models, featuring a raised seating position of 46 cm to facilitate use and improved seating comfort.

Matching WC seats, with SoftClosing hinges and QuickRelease function as options, feature a special buffer to prevent lateral displacement. A patented gripping groove along the edge of the lid ensures easy and hygienic handling. White and blue seats are available to assist people with dementia or visual impairment. hether it is a subtle floral design or a bold geometric pattern, Karoistanbul’s Carreaux Ciment (cement tiles) carry with them a wholesome sense of traditional craftsmanship that is hard to miss. From the second half of the 19th century to the mid 20th century, Carreaux Ciment Tiles with their wonderful colors were used in high ceilings, wide balconies and lodges, even in the most important historical buildings. In the 1850s, this Mediterranean tradition spread from France, and became popular throughout the world. The Mediterranean patterns, made by pressing a mixture of dyes and aggregate, became popular even in places as far flung as North Africa and the Far East. These mosaic and cement tiles, enriched the building in which they were used and provided a totally new perspective to architecture and design. But in the 1950s, after the invention of the mass production materials like ceramic, linoleum, granite and the usage of other industrial products, many cement tile manufacturers closed down. By the 1970s, except for a few small workshops, all the ateliers manufacturing these patterned mosaic tiles shut shop and this handicraft had been forgotten. Despite the dismal state of this art form, Mavi Pencere Güzel Sanatlar Atelier has tried to collect and preserve all the information, documents and knowledge concerning these mosaic and cement tiles. The company has archived a large amount of information like tile catalogues from the early 1900’s, books showing Pompeii floorings, old tableaux contain tile paintings, etc.

Bringing Carreaux Ciment Into The 21st Century Karoistanbul’s tiles marry traditional

workmanship with the highest international quality standards.

Karoistanbul’s Carreaux Ciment carry with them a wholesome sense of traditional craftsmanship

Mavi Pencere was established i n a s mall workshop by the painter Zekai Bostanci in Moda District of Istanbul in 1975. In 1980, besides paintworks, they began manufacturing stainedglass, mosaic tableaux, murals and terrazzo, and took the name of Mavi Pencere Güzel Sanatlar Atelier.

The appearance, longevity and decorative usefulness of Karoistanbul tiles adds ambiance to any room

Between 1980 and 1995, the Karoistanbul team worked on many architectural works, as well as in stained-glass, mosaic tableaux and mural works. The authentic mosaic works in Ahmet Şimşek College, Robinson Club and Rostok Hotels are just a few works that Mavi Pencere has made. In the 1990s the company started research and development activities in mosaics and cement tiles. Thanks to this archiving and research activities, this forgotten craft and culture gradually began receiving attention. Mavi Pencere finally began manufacturing cement tiles in 1997, after many years of research and development activities. They eliminated the weaknesses in the material and developed the quality in many ways such as applying high pressure to decrease the absorptivity of the material. Now they offer architects, constructors and designers these Carreaux Ciment art pieces under the brand “Karoistanbul”. The company not only protects this forgotten craft, but also keeps pace with technological

developments by supporting the skills of the craftsmen with research and development activities. Products are manufactured by p r i o r i t i s i n g l ow e n e r g y a n d raw material consumption, in conformity with the European Standards and aims for a safe, clean and environment-friendly manufacturing process. Karoistanbul leaves its artistic trace on each piece, and provides both quality and durability by respecting tradition, thus creating a high quality product. This combination of the art experience, creativity of the designers, engineering and craftsmanship is the key factor in the Karoistanbul philosophy. The appearance, longevity and decorative usefulness of Karoistanbul tiles adds ambiance to any room and they are widely used in homes, hotels, restaurants, bars and urban buildings. Many architects and designers prefer them for restoration and design projects. Contact www.karoistanbul.com

he Indian sanitation industry has entered a period of tremendous growth. By 2016 the ceramic- sanitary ware market is expected to grow to 442.5 million units with a compounded annual growth rate of 6.4%. The Indian Council of Ceramic Tiles and Sanitary ware estimates a 15% domestic growth rate for the Indian domestic market. But despite these admirable strides, India still lags behind when it comes to providing basic sanitation to most of its citizens. According to the Government of India Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation about 62.3 % of rural households and 16.7 % of urban households did not have any bathroom facility. Thus there is a dire need for low cost bathrooms in rural India. The government has spent 7000 crore rupees through the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan scheme. However merely building toilets in India’s villages is not enough. Toilet designs need to factor in several local conditions for them to be usable and viable. Some factors that need to be considered are - affordability, the space available in the home, geographical conditions (soil/ water table, etc.), cultural habits, availability of water/scarcity of water and availability of skilled or semi -skilled manpower. Gramalaya, an organisation that works for rural sanitation in Tamil Nadu, has developed some interesting and low cost toilet designs that are suitable for rural areas. The organisation’s Toilet Technology cum Training Centre has models of both waterless toilets and toilets that only require minimal water input, making them suitable in coastal, tribal, rocky

and water-logged areas. Difficult or inaccessible areas like tribal belts and economically deprived communities are best served by dry pit latrines. There are also models appropriate for operation in urban areas. The Centre has domestic toilet models ranging in price from Rs.150 to Rs.15000 which are also environment friendly. Fo r a r e a s w i t h h a r d s o i l Gramalaya recommends a twin pit pour flush leach-pit model. This model uses two pits to contain sewage, so that when the first pit gets filled up, the flow of excreta has to be diverted to the second pit. The two leach pits are connected to one single pour-flush toilet.

This model is highly convenient as while emptying one pit, people can continue using the other one. The total estimated cost for the toilet is Rs. 7257. Eco-san toilets/compost latrines are ideal for water-logged, water scarce, coastal and rocky areas. These toilets help avoid the contamination of water sources and soil by composting human waste for use as a natural fertilizer. Thus it promotes soil fertility and improved crop production. Also there is no need to empty the latrine pits. This toilet has an estimated cost of Rs.10, 747. Anganwadi toilets are platforms for behaviour change in children by promoting hygiene behaviours from

childhood. These toilets have child friendly doors with a provision for opening from inside and outside of the toilet. The toilet walls display pictures of animals, which help build a friendly environment and smaller sized toilet pans (around 14 inches) are used. The water storing tub is maintained at a height of one foot to ensure easy access for children for cleaning and washing. The total cost of the project is Rs. 12,660. Through bringing such low cost designs to the rural areas, Gramalaya is helping spread proper sanitation and health practises in India. Contact www.gramalaya.in Anganwadi toilet model

In d i a i s o n t h e r a d a r a t Maison&Objet (the show has witnessed a steady increase in both the number of visitors as well as exhibitors). Indeed, Indian interior designers are going global and international brands have India on their radar. Maison&Objet along with Mathieu Lustrerie and Vastrakala met guests as well as the design community at the workspace. In attendance for this special evening were Consul General of France - Mr. Yves Perrin with his wife Caroline, Noshir and Rashna Talati, Geetha Mehra of Sakshi Art Gallery, Smithi Kanodia, Shaina N.C, Krishika Lulla,Tara Sharma, Devieka Bhojwani, Rashmi Uday Singh, Sophie Choudry and many more. Guests marvelled at the aesthetic chandeliers from Mathieu Lustrerie, as well as cushions and accessories from Vastrakala that would be seen at Maison&Objet Americas. The exhibits covered over four floors of Gauri Khan’s work space. It is not surprising that designers Mathieu Lustrerie and Vastrakala, collaborated with Maison&Objet at the new work space of Gauri Khan. The very essence of Maison&Objet that salutes creativity, design, craftsmanship

and impeccable skills are reflected in their work. None of the designers’ works were on sale; the evening was solely an appreciation and recognition of their respective work. Despite an impressive client list Gauri Khan, Mathieu Lustrerie and offer solutions that can fit in and space - from palaces to smaller houses and farm houses. Mathieu Lustrerie who had showcased his creations at Maison&Objet presented a few unique pieces for a limited period of time at ‘Gauri Khan’. The iconic French lighting brand is known for its exquisite craftsmanship and its impeccable restoration, accurate replications and poetic creations. India happens to be a great source of inspiration to Regis Mathieu, the CEO of Mathieu Lustrerie. On the other hand, Jean-François Lesage’s Vastrakala has revitalized ancient Indian techniques like the elaborate zardozi stitch, successfully marrying those traditions with his French heritage of embroidery. clean India is of utmost importance for promoting the nation as an ideal destination for tourists from across the world. Images of unclean India often become a matter of embarrassment for Indians; therefore the Swachh Bharat campaign has been designed by the Government of India to not only help citizens adopt good habits of cleanliness but also boost our image as a nation, sincerely working towards cleanliness. As the infrastructure needs of the nation increases so does our commitment towards a cleaner and greener environment. In an effort to give impetus to cleaner surroundings, the government of India has launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. The initiative exhorts people to devote 100 hours every year towards the cause of cleanliness. As many as nine public figures: Mridula Sinha, Sachin Tendulkar,
