from Rs. 70,000 - Rs. 200,000 for the high-end and luxury segments. What kind of innovative thought process was at work to collaborate with RAK? Kludi Gmbh of Germany, a German major in faucet manufacturing and RAK Ceramics LLC, the No. 1 ceramic company globally joined hands in 2006 and started the KludiRAK joint venture primarily to cater to the Middle-Eastern market. In 2008, KludiRAK LLC kickstarted the operations of the joint venture with inauguration of a 15 million USD state of the art KludiRAK factory in Ras Al Khaima, UAE. A new brand KludiRAK was thus born. Applying strict German standards KludiRAK started its production of 5 product ranges targeting the economic and medium segment. The strategic thought behind this joint venture was to synergise the respective expertise and competencies of Kludi and RAK ceramics to exploit the potential of the vibrant Middle East market and get an easy access to South Asia at a later stage. their solution packages; prominent among them being the Concealed Flexx Box, Dual-shower solutions, thermostatic solutions, Fizz shower solutions and hands-free kitchen faucet. The most durable and popular innovation story has been innovations like “S-pointer” aerators with watersaving technology. In India, the Kludi Hi-Flow diverter has been a very successful and adaptive product which has one of the best flow rates. The flow rate available from this diverter is 72 litres per minute for the spout and 62 litres per minute from the shower. This kind of application is specially designed for low pressure water conditions which are commonly present in some two tier Indian cities. The Kludi Bathroom-in-Box (B-I-B) concept for retail and projects also features as one of the best loved solutions, with a diverter, shower, spout, basin mixer along with complimentary items being offered together in a single packaging. This concept has great appeal in retail, but is now also has catching the attention of project customers in the mid segment.
and value proposition. In projects too, the scope is vast. We see a particularly good future in the hospitality segment. Worldwide Kludi products enjoy an excellent reputation in some of the finest hotels, airports, hospitals and sport arenas. We are pleased that in India Kludi is considered in more and more prestigous hospitality projects in recent years.
Kludi Fizz showers are designed to create a full rainshower experience
What is the kind of response you have been getting in India and how do you foresee Kludi’s future here? The response since 2012 has been increasingly positive. To begin with, the response in projects has been very strong. Meanwhile Kludi products have been selected to several projects all over India such as the iconic “Amanora Park Town” in Pune just recently. Kludi comes as a breath of fresh air in the mid-segment and luxury high-end with its design philosophy
What has been your marketing and distribution strategy for the Indian markets? How do you connect with the design community and trade? We have 3-pronged market strategy and our main stay is Kludi which is the mother brand. Kludi is positioned at the high-end of the market and will be presented to customers through flagship stores (4 Metros), premier stores (4 other major cities) and boutique stores (in-tier cities). We also believe in long lasting partnership with strong sanitary trade players. For KludiRAK products, we have a distribution model in place with dealers working under distributors to cater to mid-segment retail mainly in metros. We also penetrate
projects through our dealers and project specialists. The connection with design community is through our business development team in the field and through company’s showrooms along with mailers and other forms of corporate communications. What are Kludi’s plans for India this year? To rapidly increase the brand presence in high-end retail and consolidate project gains made in the last 2 years, with a special focus on the hospitality segment. We also plan to open flagship stores in 4 metros - Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Delhi. The areas of focus would be to build brand “Kludi” and engage intensively and extensively with the specifier segment. We will be opening a Kludi company showroom in South-Central Mumbai by September 2013 and have also plans for similar showroom in Bangalore by the end of the year. The baroque-styled carving on the neck of the faucet gives this piece a feel as though it were a masterpiece standing on your basin. Isenberg fixtures are designed in such a way that the flow rate of water is not high. Also, the Ecomatic technology gives greater body to the water rendering a natural stream feeling. Therefore, every time an Isenberg faucet is turned on at least 40 per cent of the water is saved. Moreover, its innovative technologies make sure that there is no heavy metal content in the water, making it healthy as well as planet friendly. NSUflex, by Supreme Industries, is a CFC-free, black flexible elastomeric closed cell Nitrile Rubber thermal insulation that provides a highly efficient method of insulation and effectively controls condensation against both heat loss and heat gain. The material is particularly suitable for insulating pipe works for condensation control. It can be used on chilled water pipe lines, refrigerated pipe-works, hot & cold water services and on sheets or rolls in air-conditioning ductworks. INSUflex has a very high diffusion resistance factor to water vapour transmission ≥7000, a low thermal conductivity and an excellent fire safe performance. It is suitable for a temperature ranging from - 55oC to + 105oC. The product does not depend on any additional outer thick skin or covering but is in-built with the insulation and extends through the full thickness.

A high water vapour value corresponds to greater material resistance to water vapour penetration. INSUflex is available in combinations of various wall thicknesses and diameters to suit G.I., copper and PVC pipes. The product is applied to the surface using an adhesive compound. A protective layer of glass cloth, in two layers The INSUflex range is resistant to corrosion, fungal and mildew growth and is therefore very suitable for clean room applications. Insulation material with a low ‘K’ value equates to a high energy saving potential and thermal performance. Thermal conductivity is the main data used to technically calculate insulation thickness required to prevent condensation. The main goal of a good insulation material should be that of preventing water vapour from spreading through insulation material as water is an optimal heat conductor. INSUflex, having a high water vapour resistance can prevent the flow of water vapour that tends to pass through the insulating material created in air-conditioning systems as a result
with an adhesive compound is then applied before providing a weather barrier for outdoor application. The advantage of INSUflex is that it provides good flexibility at low temperature. It is clean, dust free and the installation is fast and easy. It has a low toxicity index and becomes a minimal toxic fire hazard. Its unique closed cell structures provide an ideal vapour barrier resistance. Contact: email: insulation@supreme.co.in web: www.supreme.co.in

sturdiness of metal meets the flexible nature of wire, the result is a metallic mesh. And the company to turn to for these meshes is GKD - Gebr. Kufferath AG Company. The owner-run technical weaving company is the global market leader for metal and plastic woven solutions. Under the umbrella of GKD - World Wide Weave, the company combines four independent business units: Solid Weave (industrial meshes), Weave In Motion (process belt meshes), Creative Weave (architectural meshes) and Compact Filtration (compact filter systems). With its eight plants including the headquarters in Germany and other facilities in the US, Great Britain, France, South Africa, China, India and Chile - as well as its branches in Spain, Dubai, Qatar and other worldwide representatives, GKD is never far from its customers. The company took its first steps in India in the year 2012. GKD India Ltd., founded as a joint venture

From its factory in Jaipur, the company will no longer just be offering sales and distribution in the region, but will work as a production unit providing full service. This technical weaving company’s architectural and design meshes are already established in the Indian market for several years under the brand name of Arcmesh. With a select range of products tailored to local needs, GKD India is continuing this success. The German company has the prestigious project, ‘King of England’ to its credit wherein the new CMP mesh was used. Panels 3.45 metres wide and 1.25 metres long were fitted to an area totalling around 100 square metres. Finishing and fastening of the large panels were simplified by the highly stable and lightweight nature of the overall structure. These metallic meshes are also used for various kinds of applications in architecture such as ceilings, facades (including sunshade and media facades), walls, floors, roller shutters and balustrades etc. Some of the successful projects of GKD include the sports venue of the Yamuna stadium (façade) and airports such as New Doha International Airport (media façade). It also has hotel and restaurant projects like the Hotel Barcelo, Barcelona,

And these unique design meshes prove to have creative expression coupled with being an efficient building technology. The metal mesh balance energy as well as climatic, thermal and acoustic influences on a building. As a result, it optimises the ecological and economic balance of the structure, while reducing operating and maintenance costs. “There is scarcely another material which, with its near inexhaustible design vocabulary, serves such a diverse range of visual experiences while meeting the highest demands in terms of function at the same time. In addition to classical applications made from cool, pure stainless steel, we offer an innovative range of fascinating products such as printed, painted or medialised using woven LED profiles. Interview

t all started with a good idea and a family prepared to take on an entrepreneurial challenge. That was more than 110 years ago. Since then, Viega has undergone continuous development, remaining under family management and exhibiting healthy growth rates. Today, Viega’s success story is one consisting of passion for innovation.
Viega - Definitely A Better Idea The Viega group is a leading German manufacturer of piping, drainage and pre-wall solutions that now has a strong foot hold in India. we have a piping division, a prewall division and we have drainage. Viega started as a marketing activity in 2004 through a lone distributor from the north who looked after the entire India territory. At the time we started only with the pre-wall technology or what is commonly known as flushing systems. When we started up as a company, we decided that this is not the only product we will sell, this will not give us the scale we wanted. We started Viega in India and are now present in all three segments of piping, drainage and pre-wall. If you make a turnover comparison, we are roughly equal in all three categories. Could you elaborate on your piping solutions?
With Viega piping solutions one can create a variety of water installations safely, efficiently and conforming to the highest standards
In a recent interview with The Inside Track, Mr. Shailesh Khamar, Country Head - India, Viega GmbH & Co. KG talked about the evolution of Viega in India and the road ahead for the firm. Can you share a short account of Viega’s history in India? We started our own company in 2008. The first office was in Gurgaon and our second office was started in
Mumbai last July. We have a total staff of 15 people now. The past 5 years have been good for Viega and we have grown considerably. While we cannot compare our turnover with other European countries, we can certainly compare it with our Indian competitors. In what product categories does Viega operate in India? We have three product categories;
We have 4 different range of materials for our piping solutions, namely, copper, stainless steel, composite pipes and carbon steel pipes. The technology is quite different when compared to conventional systems available. While conventional technology involves solvent jointing or threaded joints, what we have is a unique press technology. It’s a 4 seconds job to make a joint and this allows you to do the entire bathroom by yourself if you want. We call it a ‘Do It Yourself ’ kit or a ‘Fit and Forget’ system. We have sold a lot of stainless steel piping, as well as copper systems. We are now seeing more orders for composite piping as well. Our piping solutions are specified for luxury projects like villas, high end residential
Shailesh Khamar, Country Head - India, Viega GmbH & Co. KG
bungalows and apartments as well as luxury hotels. When is the USP of these piping systems? Our systems are more expensive when compared to conventional materials, but we consider the longevity of the material to be a major USP. When we talk about stainless steel, we are talking about a material which outlasts the building life. We use the top grade 316 variety. With our systems we can complete one joint in 4 seconds while a conventional method can takes about 45 minutes. We score very well in time-bound projects. We also provide a material guarantee along with a comprehensive guarantee for

the entire systems. For drinking water applications and potable water application, we stand guarantee for the entire system and that makes us a preferred choice. Apart from that we have done very well in some industrial projects recently. We have completed an industrial project for MMTC, which is a gold processing unit, where all the piping was done with copper and stainless steel. We have also done piping for Nestle and Haldiram where they needed the water quality to be of the highest
with very high flow rates. To drain out rain showers you require high capacity drains. The normal drains work upto 0.8 to 1 litre per second. While we have drainages solutions which are called as linear drains which work from 1.1 to 1.8 litres per second. With high pressure showers today that have flow rates of about 50 litres per minute, makes our product in great demand. Another advantage with our linear drains is that you can use a single slope instead of multiple slopes. This

looks neat and is aesthetically much better. At ISH we saw some new products of Viega, when will these be available in India?
The expanded Advantix Vario range is limitlessly flexible and can be shortened as required
We had the Vario - a variable shower channel that was launched. The new shower channels can go upto 2.8 metres and you can create a ‘V’ shaped or ‘U’ shaped channel configuration. With these products we have a drainage capacity of 1.8 to 1.9 litres per second. We also launched a height adjustable WC system. This is a hydraulic system which is not dependent on electricity and lets you adjust the height of your WC like you would an office chair. This is a great application for the aged, hospitals and even for residences where you have a young child. We also launched a flushing system with infrared sensors as well as a dual flush system. These products will be launched in India by July. Contact Mr. Shailesh Khamar tel: 022 28715160 email: shailesh.khamar@viega.in web: www.viega.com
standard. Wherever there is need for purity, that’s where a metallic piping system scores exceedingly well. How are your flushing systems and drainage solutions fairing? We have international competitors as well as local competitors for our flushing systems. However, we take our stand of being a German brand with quality as our mainstay very seriously. Additionally, we adhere to green building norms and ensure that we save water. For example, in cisterns we have a standard of 3 and 6 litre flush, however, in the same cistern we can go down to 2.8 and 4.9 litres. This is a system that not many products have and this adjustment can be done very easily. Our drainage systems are in demand not just for aesthetic reasons but also because a lot of people are opting for rain showers

The Retyrement Plan The dullness of a rubber tyre disappears when Anu Tandon Vieira transforms these into interesting accessories for your living space. a difference to the environment. This lead to the inception of ‘The Retyrement Plan’. The idea behind The Retyrement Plan is to utilise materials that are not considered beautiful or exclusive, in the classic sense, and convert them into products that are well designed, appealing and above all, can in some way incorporate the waste that is generated by so many industries that surround us. Anu has a hands-on approach to design alongside weavers, printers and other craftsmen to give form to a concept. The materials used are all either recycled or sustainable. Working with a dusty, well used tyre and then using the same detail and design that one would with a piece of expensive raw material, is the way she approaches each piece. The tyres are washed, sanitised and are then ready to be worked on. The ropes made of recycled tailoring waste or plastic wrapper waste are carefully coordinated to be woven in weaves that are durable and will come together in a cohesive manner to result in a unique and well detailed product. Anu has been exploring ways of combining skill sets that have not
been explored before. Combining crochet skills to upcycle saree scrap into home furnishings, using printing waste to make lamps, and converting political flex hoardings into bags and wallets are some of her on-going projects. Anu believes that a good design can be sustainable and relevant only if the person translating it can relate to it and contribute to its improvisation and innovation. The Retyrement Plan collection includes various furniture items like pouffes, all weather ottomans, occasional chairs and tables made from well-travelled wheels, salvaged fabrics and reclaimed wood and bamboo.
