Design Award for innovative design in Italian ceramics. But as always, the main draw for Cersaie was the stalls of major players in the ceramics segment who were showcasing their latest collections and innovations. Among the Indian companies that participated in Cersaie this year was Qutone Ceramics. “Cersaie is the biggest show for tiles and gets a footfall from all around the world,” said Rajeev Adlakha, Managing Director, Qutone Ceramics. The company is already present in 38 countries, so it is an ideal place to reach out to potential international buyers. Adlakha elaborates, “It is a one stop solution to launch new products and present it to your buyers. This time we launched 2 CM in 60 x 60 and 60 x 120, apart from Big Slabs

and received very good feedback from visitors.” Here’s a look at what the biggest brands had on show at Cersaie: Villeroy &Boch Tiles Villeroy &Boch Tiles launched a wide range of collections with diverse styles and materials from its tiles division. A recurring theme is the influence of material effects such as the Tuxedo collection – a porcelain stoneware concept with an elegant wood look and concrete inspired collections like Xentric and Cosmo Vision. Xentric tiles have a typical cement look. This concept comprises two colour lines: one cool featuring cement-coloured grey and anthracite, the other warm with a contemporary brown and a soft beige tone. Traces of rust are used as a stylistic feature in modern interior design and sculpture. For the new Metallic Illusion, vilbostone porcelain stoneware range this design idea was implemented in premium ceramic: rust colours run through a surface inspired by the basic structure of concrete – as if the passage of time had left a visible trace. The result is a vivid, used look with metallic effects. The large-format tiles are ideal for spacious interiors, particularly in apartments with a loft character or interiors in the popular industrial style. There are four colours: light grey, mid-grey and anthracite. Existing tile ranges were also expanded. Century Unlimited, Villeroy &Boch’s comprehensive tile series that was launched last year

added a new colour combination: black for the basic tiles and shades of grey for the décors. Bisazza Bisazza offered a preview of its 2016 collection that featured additions to the Bisazza Cementiles collections with two new lines from leading designers Tom Dixon, India Mahdavi. There are also new additions to Bisazza’s existing collections with new blends and mosaic patterns by highly-respected designers like Studio Job, Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders, Tricia Guild and Carlo Dal Bianco. Just for Cersaie, Bisazza has restyled some of the most popular pieces from its Bagno line, signed by Nendo and by Jaime Hayon. Next year’s collection is a combination of quirky and cool. Tom Dixon’s new collection of cement tiles is heavily inspired by his home city, London and features graphic and trompe-l’oeil patterns. The tiles are available in two sizes: square 20x20, or hexagonal 20x23 cm. The 12 designs in this collection represent Dixon’s continued on page 4

impressions of some of the British capital’s architectural landmarks. Bricks of red clay, cracked pavements and pebble dash walls, are reworked in a graphic, pop art style to suit the simplicity demanded by the century-old tile manufacturing process. By far the most intriguing collection is Studio Job’s ‘Perished’ in glass mosaic. This new mosaic creation in the Neogothic style by the Belgian design studio consists of a digitally created pattern made of 10x10 mm tiles. It is available in black and white and with Bisazza’s new rose gold mosaic tiles. The duo explains, “We want to create a collection that is exclusive for the quality of the materials and techniques. The textures and the colours of the tiles - in porcelain stoneware and ceramic - are characterized by their allItalian elegance. The two finishes, matte and glossy, vary in shades of white, beige, dark blue, dark grey, graphite and eggshell. Conceived as an original reinterpretation of Asian woodwork, they can be installed horizontally and vertically mixing the two formats to create sophisticated personalized walls.

Cotto’s Pætchwork/ Collection is defined by Piero Lissoni’s minimalist touch, in his interpretation of décor through sophisticated style

Cotto Cotto, the flagship brand of Thai conglomerate SCG officially debuted its new Pætchwork/ Collection by Piero Lissoni, a renowned Italian designer, and Grande Collection, the premium extra-large porcelain slabs. Lissoni’s Pætchwork/ Collection is an original collection of tiles, bathroom fixtures and fittings and accessories by Cotto. The collection is evidence of SCG’s desire to assert itself

Furthermore, the glossy versions present refined graphic patterns with striped or checkered motifs that recall a lightly drawn sketches. The collection also includes two mix versions - gloss and matt finish, in all the colours of the collection, 400x400 mm size - that combine the four motifs of geometric patterns on a single tile, to be placed freely for seemingly random walls. For the washbasins, bathroom fixtures and accessories, Piero

Lissoni explored the new expressive potential of ceramic, transferring the spirit from tiling to the bathroom collection, developing an articulate offer with individual elements in glossy white ceramic. He designed four sinks: in a suspended version or in a console version with front legs, of which two models feature a double sink. Among these was an original version which combines two basins in different sizes: big and mini. The rectangular shapes are basic, with rounded rims; the washbasins are large and their tops are defined by the prominent contours of the raised edges, while two

The Fiber collection, featured in various sections of the exhibit, is characterised by an elegant waterfall effect composed of glass tesserae in the form of long, thin strips embellished with gold and platinum leaves. The newest additions to the line were the Meteors collection in opalescent and iridescent glass and the eclectic Diamond collection, in which rhomboid tesserae were combined into visions of geometry at play, and even floral patterns evoking the very finest embroidery.

The new Grande Collection of extra-large porcelain slabs are manufactured by state-of-the-art technology from Cotto’s jointlyowned factory in Italy. The tiles are designed to further tap into the premium market segment by building upon Cotto’s world-class quality and design prowess. Sicis This year Sicis focused on the mosaics that have been at the heart of the company from the beginning. The stall had the air of an explosion of creativity with walls resembling paintings and original projects of three-dimensional mosaics in glass and minerals paste and other materials, with elegant and precious patterns. Beautiful mosaic installations featuring a combination of both artistic and pixel-based techniques had a powerful impact. The most popular was a virtual bookcase in shades of grey but made spectacular with large inserts of artistic red flowers. The Gold line, symbolising unadulterated luxury, was used for the Flamant artistic mosaic panel with gold-leaf slabs: a pond with canes of bamboo and a flock of flamingos, adorning a room

RAK Ceramics The major draw at RAK Ceramics’ exhibit at Cersaie 2015 was its enormous Maximus Mega Slab – the latest in extra-large format slabs produced using SACMI Continua+ technology. RAK Ceramics is one of the first manufacturers in the world to have installed Continua+ and the only manufacturer in the GCC to be producing such large format sizes. Available in four gigantic sizes (135x305cm, 120x240cm, 120x120cm and 29x240cm) and three thicknesses (14.5mm, 12.5mm and 6mm), RAK Ceramics showcased a range of Maximus Mega Slab collections at Cersaie. They also showcased new models in Gres Porcelain including its Wood, Marble, Stone and Cement collections. And in Ceramic Tiles, the company launched the largest sizes available in the region (40x120cm, 30x100cm and 40x80cm). The sanitary ware stand consisted of bath ware from its Resort, Harmony and Moon ranges as well as the launch of a collection of complementary accessories. eramic tiles are widely used as they are impermeable, non-combustible (therefore, safe) and don’t let germs, dust or pollen cling to their surfaces. Most importantly, they come in all shapes and sizes and can therefore be custom designed. Ceramic tiles are congruent with a sustainable lifestyle. They are made of natural raw materials such as quartz, clay and

To ensure that you make the most of your ceramic tiles, here are a few helpful tips: Outdoors Due to their resistance and durability, ceramic tiles are ideal for exteriors. It is however crucial to check the slip resistance characteristics when choosing tiles for outdoors. For a seamless look on staircases, several tile collections include trim pieces. For swimming pools, ceramic tiles are perfect as a waterproof pool lining and can be used on the sides for the floor. Ceramic tiles with textured finishes with an A+B+C index lower the risk of slipping around the swimming pool, even in wet areas. tiles for the fireplace. Not only do they have visual appeal, their fireresistant properties make them an ideal installation. These tiles can be used in a wainscoting style around the bed. They can also be installed as an option for underfloor heating since ceramic has ver y good heat conductivity. Ceramic sheets are perfect for customised applications, such as a ceramic kitchen countertop. These tiles can be used behind sinks as well for protection against stains and splashes. Ceramic tiles are ideal for places where water and steam are present, such as the bathroom. Mosaic tiles add dynamism to the walls; while using trim pieces, formellas and listellos make the bathroom appear sophisticated and elegant. Installing ceramic tiles on terraces makes them look decorative and stylish. For a finishing look, you can use ceramic skirting. Choose

non-slip material on terraces for complete safety. There are a few things that you should think over before setting out to install ceramic tiles so as to ensure its optimum usage. For instance, are the tiles required for indoor or outdoor purposes? For exterior use, they need to have certain essential characteristics such as frost resistance, thermal shock resistance and slip resistance. If the tiles are to be put on walls as opposed to floors, keep in mind that the tiles for walls are produced

to achieve aesthetic and decorative purposes. Those produced to be installed on floors are made so as to withstand stress. Reflect over the required size of tiles. Usually small sizes are preferable, though several designers assert that large-format tiles lend a seamless look to the room, making even a small room look quite large. Or you can go creative and combine different sized tiles. It is however recommended to order 10% more tiles than the area of the surface that needs to be covered.

very year Cersaie showcases the most innovative and creative developments in the global ceramic tile and surfacing market. Every variation of style, format and thickness is on display, setting the direction of the market for the year to come. Thus Cersaie offers a unique opportunity for industry professionals to discern trends for the following year. This year’s preference for imitation wood looks to continue, with international brands launching specific products in this style. The popularity for these tiles is primarily because they add a warm, natural flair to modern interior design, while also offering practical advantages. Tiles are much easier to maintain, are tougher than wooden floors and also retain their looks in the long-term. Plank formats with long, narrow tiles (15-20x120 cm) are gaining popularity but long and wide sizes (such as 75x150 cm) are also prevalent.

The look is inspired by luxurious hardwoods. The new design features fine, long grains with few inclusions, just like carefully selected real wood. different formats, as well as in typical parquet patterns. A n o t h e r t re n d i s e c l e c t i c wood finishes, including worn woods with emphatically aged colour schemes, ideally suited for outdoor applications. A more recent trend is that of graphic design: geometries and patterns designed to create personalised floors and walls with different laying patterns, with both visual and tactile 3D effects and a harmonious use of colour. The Bisazza 2016 collection features the work of several designers such as Marcel Wanders and Tricia Guild who use this method to create artistically innovative ranges. Wanders’collection, Tulips Grey is a new interpretation of traditional

Dutch flower and combines the precious craftsmanship of handcut glass enamels in contrast with a contemporary, digitally-designed background of 10x10 mm tiles. The aged urban/industrial trend features cements and woods with special graphic effects, often inspired by action painting, graffiti and even typography. An important role is played in this area by digital decoration, with its enormous potential for creative flexibility. Among the most attractive collections displayed at Cersaie which uses this method is ABK’s Do Up Collection which makes innovative use of graffiti for a children’s bedroom wall and a watercolour inspired geisha portrait design for a wall.

Bisazza’s Frozen Garden Collection in Gold: The fashion for hexagonal formats is still popular

There have also been tendencies towards exploiting the form and

thickness of the tile itself. The fashion for hexagonal formats (both small and large) is still popular, as are the extra-large formats (80 cm and over), while collections with different thicknesses are on the rise. Bisazza’s Frozen Garden and Wood collections are indicative of this trend, and mosaic master, Sicis includes pearly hexagonal shaped pieces in the Araldica collection with three-dimensional elements in crystal glass and opalescent glass paste. The Frozen Garden Collection’s new luxurious finishes in Gold and Platinum are based on the ancient

metallic lustre technique, and lend a touch of sophistication and glamor. Many of the collections on display this year evoke the concepts of earth or clay, as do their colours - a clear reference to the material’s earthy origin. These are mostly dusty, unsaturated colours, including the many varieties of brown, ochre, orange and grey. ABK’s Interno 9 range features tiles heavily inspired by nature with names such as Rust, Mud, Dark and Pearl.

In decorations, classic and vintage designs are most sought after; inspired by furnishing fabrics, majolica (often with metallic glazes) and classic cement tiles, combined with contemporary materials and furnishings. Several brands launched collections which incorporated this theme in some way: Villeroy & Boch’s Century Unlimited series (based on Mettlach tiles) and the Mon Coeur series (inspired by twentieth century Jugendstil). ith birds in flight, delicate flowers and quirky sea creatures, Smriti Choudhary’s ceramic dinnerware call to mind the tranquil spontaneity of children’s books. The owner of the Delhi-based company, Airphish is heavily inspired by nature. “My illustrations are reflections of my emotional connect with the animal kingdom and the dreamscapes that I create in my mind while fantasising about a perfect world,” says Choudhary.

Smriti Chaudhary, owner, Airphish

Choudhary grew up in Udaipur and had a love for drawing since childhood, eventually pursuing her ambition and graduating from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad as a graphic designer. Soon after, she started an independent design studio Pinksoda, and worked on various branding, print design and digital illustration projects. But after years of sitting in front of a computer, she decided to return to her first love – drawing. Says Choudhary, “I started itching to draw again while I was pregnant in 2011. Airphish was born at the same time as my child.”

9

Nature On Your Plate Airphish’s ceramics and furnishings evoke the playful whimsy of nature. BY ALYSSA LOBO Choudhary doesn’t follow a fixed process when drawing these sketches. “Every sketch has its own story. Some start with a mere scribble, some start with a narrative in my head and other times something as simple as a conversation ignites a thought,” she says. Choudhary draws with fine pens and uses methods like stippling and hatching to create details and depth in her artworks. This process can take anywhere from couple of hours to a couple of days, depending on the size and details. Once the artwork is ready, different compositions and sizes are explored, after which the illustration is scanned and screen printed on a decal which is then manually transferred on each piece. The tableware then goes for a final firing which heat sets the print and makes it permanent. Ceramics caught Choudhary’s eye by chance. “It all started as a DIY project when I set my eyes on the plain white dinnerware in the kitchen. At that time I was experimenting a lot with illustrations and different surfaces. I was drawing on any white space I could find. My house walls and cupboards were not spared either,” she says. According to her, for most people a dinner table is not only used for meals but also to come together as family or friends to spend time and connect with each other. She sees

her ceramic creations as conversation starters – “What can be more positive than a talk about nature and art?” Working with dinnerware also gave her an opportunity to play around with three-dimensional forms and to see her art as something functional. Airphish’s products extend beyond the quaint ceramics - with an art book, art prints and furnishings. Currently Choudhary is working with some printed textile-based products and is also exploring other domains besides home decor and furnishings. She doesn’t plan to stick to one medium or product category, preferring to explore different mediums for her sketches.

She introduced cushion covers to her product range just last month in minimal black and white designs, with hand drawn detailed illustrations. The cushion covers work as a set, where two together complete a picture. She will be launching her new ceramic tableware collection by the end of this year. The theme will be revealed soon. Apart from nature, Japanese animator and artist, Hayao Miyazaki is Choudhary’s greatest inspiration. “If there is one person I worship, it’s him. I have watched all his films over and over again,” she says. Contact web: www.airphish.com email: info@airphish.com.

aurav Khosla, co-proprietor of Super Sanitar y has witnessed the immense change that has swept Gurgaon over the past decade. With standards of living improving, people are now

Lighting The Way Major lighting players like Jaquar now seek to build customer awareness and engagement with their progressive products and solutions. They have been associated with my showroom for more than 25 years. Since I have been associated with their faucets for so long, I asked them if they could give me something in the lighting sector as well. So for the past five years I have been working with Jaquar lighting. I have two kinds of business – one is Super Sanitary retail and the other is wholesale. Our wholesale business consists of a lot of sub dealers under us; who are recognised Jaquar dealers.

Gaurav Khosla, Co-proprietor, Super Sanitary

demanding better quality products, thus paving the way for established brands like Jaquar to branch out to other product segments like lighting. Khosla discusses with us the current scenario of the Indian lighting industry and why he feels Jaquar has an edge in this market. Could you tell us about your business? Which brands do you represent? This is a family business and I am the third generation handling it. We have been in this business since 1972 with tiles, sanitary ware and faucets. We started with three brands- Somany tiles, Hindware and Jaquar faucets, and other products like geysers. But all those companies faded away with time and I shifted all my sanitary ware business to Jaquar as they gave me better service.

What are Jaquar’s strengths with respect to lighting? Jaquar is selling on the concept of service only, because the design and products keep changing with fashion and requirement of the designer. One thing is constant around which everything else revolves – that is the service portfolio and regular R&D. Every day there are up-gradations in Jaquar’s system. And they are 100% service oriented; there is not a single product in Jaquar’s portfolio that is not backed up with service. You are just a phone call away and the man will be there within a maximum 72 hours. He will measure how much ‘lux’ level of light is required, how many lumens, etc. He will talk on technical terms so that it will be a sensible buy. Initially when we launched this business five years back, Jaqaur was only into expensive and high end lighting. They were more into tie ups with foreign brands like Artemide. But now we have quality for every segment and a huge

portfolio. If somebody is interested in lighting solutions we can easily give him beautiful, cost effective propositions and a good package with a complete lighting solution (CLS) from Jaquar. Which brands in India are today making the best products in lighting? What is the market scenario with regard to lighting? There are local players in the market from the unorganised sector who are trying to pitch a few LEDs but

back up line will never fail in the market. Now that towns like Gurgaon are growing and developing, people have started demanding good life style products. I need to segregate when I’m selling. There are people who want basic LEDs, which is a market resource that has been taken over by Chinese goods for the past five years. It is only now, after Modiji’s ‘Make In India’ concept that people a re now looking for brands which are made in India.

Jaquar’s chandeliers from its luxury range use certified Swarovski crystals

otherwise there’s nothing big in the market. Brands like Oreva and Havells have started coming in this business but they do not have such a big portfolio. Either they’re just giving LEDs, or only outdoor or indoor, or they can’t do chandeliers. In 2001 a lot of foreign brands came into the market but in five years they were all out of the market, because the kind of service that Jaquar offers, no brand can offer in India – whether it is a domestic or an international brand. In India we don’t have skilled labour. So products that are supported by a strong service

Jaquar, being an Indian brand has become popular. Also they have done a lot of innovation in the lighting business and they give very cost effective propositions for LED lights, bulbs, commercial lights, etc. They also have multiple ranges as well. We have crystal lighting which is for people who are going for the luxury range, which uses Swarovski crystals. The market is growing and people are getting aware - bulbs are out of fashion, CFL tubes are also being withdrawn, LED is the latest concept that is in. Now is the right time to expand ourselves.

THE INSIDE TRACK November 2015

What are the major trends in lighting that you have observed? What are home owners asking for in this segment? LEDs – even a person who doesn’t understand design understands that he’s going to save some energy if he uses an LED. People are asking for anything that holds an LED, irrespective of what brand you are selling. They only ask for the diameter and the price. They are not concerned about the lux levels, what is the area for which they are planning, etc.

Jaquar owes it success in the lighting sector to its service portfolio and regular R&D

So there is general awareness, but it is up to us to understand their need, shape it and identify what he requires. We send a sales manager from Jaquar who will identify and then give them three options- most cost effective, mid segment and a niche/ high end. Even though this business has to be promoted through consultants, as a lot of technicalities go into it, we still have to speak to the end consumer.

Is there a significant premium/ luxury lighting segment in India? What are their needs? Yes, very much. But people are not aware; we have to make them understand the concept. Even today people go to Khan Market, burn their money for lighting and get nothing out of it. If something breaks, or there’s d a m a g e , o r s o m e t h i n g’s n o t working, there is zero service back up. So we work like a consultant,

13

give them some ideas and then we have solutions for those ideas. But if you aren’t able to give them an idea, then the need for a solution never arises. In cities like ours, everyone has a budget of around five to seven lakhs for lighting when their construction cost is one crore. So in that kind of area, allotting a budget of five lakhs for lighting is reasonable. People will not buy a light for 20 lakhs, but for three to four lakhs? Most definitely. Some weeks back there were two walk-ins who saw a double height Jaquar chandelier with crystals. They saw the Jaquar brand name, the gold plating, the certificate of authenticity and that we were providing on-site service back up. This particular model clicked with both of them so much that they actually started an argument over who will buy it. So I had to organise for them that particular chandelier which was in the bracket of about 5 lakhs. Contact Super Sanitary email: khoslagauravk@yahoo.com tel: +91 9811113752

urportedly the world’s largest maker and designer of carpet tile, Interface believes in the wide potential of carpet tile. The Inside Track converses with Sharad Mathur, Managing Director of Interface for South Asia about Interface Flor carpet squares, carpet tiling for the workspace, carpets with biophilic designs and the many benefits of installing carpet tiles.

Sharad Mathur, Managing Director of Interface in the South Asian countries

What makes carpet tiling a better option as compared to other flooring options? Carpet tiles are available in squares of 50cm x 50cm and rectangular planks of 100cm x 25cm sizes. They are easy to install, with close dimensional tolerances so the joints are not visible and can be laid in several patterns. The main benefits of using carpet tiles are that work spaces are much quieter as sound gets deadened.

The New Age Carpet

Sharad Mathur, MD, Interface Flor tells us why carpet tile is the most innovative, efficient and durable flooring solutions. They come in several vibrant patterns and can easily be combined with other patterns to define work spaces. Both these benefits make it win over hard flooring. Maintenance is easy and even replacement of a tile is easy in case of stubborn stains or damages. This benefit makes it superior to a broad loom carpet. Most offices globally have graduated to carpet tiles because of these benefits. How has the Indian customer taken to the option of carpet tiles? Interface has been promoting Carpet tiles in India for close to a decade. Because of the benefits that carpet tiles offer, most MNCs use them as a standard in all their offices. Large private banks and other contemporary corporates have also upgraded to using these latest soft flooring solutions. What makes modular carpet tiles an efficient flooring solution? While designing, different areas of the work can be developed to

For example, passages can get a different look, areas to collaborate can be made to look differently, open work stations can be differentiated from cabins, etc. Carpet tiles can be installed very easily and quickly. design. This is to mimic nature. We also offer carpets that have varying pile height. This three-dimensional aspect leads to vibrant aesthetics. All our carpets have a 15 year warranty and are made from ssolution dyed yarn, which retains colour for the longest time. Some brands offer printed carpets, which clearly is an inferior technology.

How important is the design of carpet tiles to your company?

What new innovations and innovative products has your company brought into the market?

Design is a very important aspect while developing new age work space solutions. Interface retains a leading edge in design. We now offer biophilic designs that bring elements of nature into work spaces. Studies have shown that use of these biophilic designs helps reduce employee stress levels. We offer in-house design assistance to all customers. What technological innovations go into the making of carpet tiles that ensure high performance and durability? For Interface, design is an important aspect while developing new age work space solutions

Driven by leading design, Interface now offers several products that have colour transitions in a single

Interface is a pioneer in developing its business in a sustainable manner. We have been rated in the top three most sustainable companies globally for several years. Most of our plants have reached recycled nylon usage of 80 to 100%. We take utmost efforts to ensure our used products do not reach landfill sites, as it is difficult to degrade nylon naturally. Some of our innovations include an anti-bacterial coating to act on coffee spills, use of biophilic designs to enhance employee productivity and launch of rectangular planks to better show designs that need a longer format. f late, more and more products are being invented that utilise and harvest solar energy for multiple purposes. Whilst solar energy has been harvested before for uses such as heating and cooking, t h e s e p ro d u c t s c h a n n e l t h i s energy to fuel devices and objects that are more contemporary in their usage.

Running On The Sun A slew of products are drawing attention

precisely because of the way they utilise solar energy for contemporary purposes, such as charging the cell phone. BY TASNEEM S. POCKETWALA

The Current Table designed by Aubel produces energy from natural light, which it then uses to charge small devices

Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel has designed two such products. The Current Table designed by Aubel is a desk that works as a workstation and produces energy from natural light, which it then uses to charge small devices. Its orange-coloured, glass top writing surface consists of a solar panel. Interestingly, its process of transferring energy to recharge gadgets is quite similar to photosynthesis. There is a dye-synthesised solar cell inside the glass panels. This solar cell makes use of the properties of colour to generate an electrical current – quite mimicking the process in

cells are placed between two panes of toughened glass and connected to a battery lying within a frame that has USB charging points. The orange, pink and blue cells in the Current Window have varying wavelengths and therefore generate different energy levels. Onto the ledge of the windows USB ports are fused, so that the ledge provides a snug place for a small device such as a cell phone to charge. There are a set of lit-up diagonal stripes near the charging point which indicate the amount of power stocked up in the battery. Depending upon the quality of the light and the season, the Current Window can generate up to 25 watts in a day.

which plants use green chlorophyll t o c o n ve r t n a t u r a l s u n l i g h t into energy. As a process, The Current Table works when small particles of titanium dioxide are placed on a piece of transparent glass which is then dyed orange. Sunlight is absorbed efficiently due to this technique of dyeing. The table comes with two USB charging points that can be used to recharge cell phones and tablets. Thus, users can utilise the table for writing emails or reading books and simultaneously charge their laptops, phones and tabs. The table’s orange-coloured, glass top writing surface consists of a solar panel which comes with two USB charging points

The Current Window is made from dye-sensitised solar cells arranged in a zigzag pattern that covert sunlight into electrical energy

Another of Aubel’s creations that harvests solar energy is the Current Window. The process is similar to The Current Table: the window is made from coloured solar cells that convert sunlight into electrical energy, enabling the charging of devices. The dye-sensitised solar cells are arranged in a zigzag pattern, a design that has been created by Aubel and graphic designer Marine Duroselle. Similarly in this product, minute particles of titanium dioxide are covered with light-absorbing dyes. In the Current Window, the solar

The products delineated above formulate a part of the continuously growing line of products that seek to depend upon the abundance of the sun’s power in order to be self-sufficient and energy efficient. Given the current global energy crisis on the one hand and the promise of sustainability and environment friendliness offered by products such as these on the other, products that run on the sun’s energy are bound to be developed in large numbers in the near and distant future. It Products Action Tesa Introduces HDHMR Boards Action Tesa has recently introduced its High Density High Moisture Resistance (HDHMR) board. The fibre boards by Action Tesa are manufactured with hard wood which makes their density better than most others in the market.

Due to a uniform density gradient and compact core, the boards have superior routing characteristics. This is made possible by the use of German technology for MAT formation and eight cylinders with an 18 day light press. The boards’ high moisture resistance makes them suitable for areas with a high level of humidity such as those in the southern part of India. HDHMR boards are therefore increasingly preferable to traditional plywood to customers. The boards are an ideal partner for complete solutions that include modular kitchens, home and office furniture, etc. HDHMR boards by Tesa ensure not only an improved quality of the product but are also cost effective. oaring temperatures caused by global warming have made most of us completely dependent on our ACs. But our ancestors have been successfully beating the heat since ancient times without the use of electricity, let alone plasma air-conditioning. This is primarily because ancient Indian buildings

The design of the Pearl Academy of Fashion in Jaipur keeps the building 20 degrees cooler than the outer area

made use of several features such as high ceilings and ‘jaalis’ to allow passive cooling of the buildings. With many architects trying to figure out how to reduce energy costs to buildings, some like Manit Rastogi of Morphogenesis turn to ancient Indian architecture to show the way. The architect’s design of the Pearl Academy of Fashion in Jaipur keeps the building 20 degrees cooler than the outer area.

While the exterior is in sync with trends in contemporary design; at the base of the building is a vast pool of water - a cooling concept taken directly from the step well structures developed locally over 1,500 years ago to provide refuge from the desert heat. These ‘baoli’ (step wells) are bodies of water encased by a descending set of steps. This is based on the principle that when water evaporates in heat, it immediately

brings down the temperature of the space around it. While traditional step wells often go many stories below ground level, the ones in the building go down just four meters. However, the effect is the same and the academy enjoys its own microclimate. In addition to this the whole building is raised above the ground on pillars, creating an airy and shaded pavilion that is used as a recreation and exhibition space. Here the walls are made from a heat-absorbing material that creates a ‘thermal bank’- so the warmth is slowly released at night when the temperature drops. The building is protected from the environment by a double skin which is derived from a traditional building element called the ‘jaali’ which is prevalent in Rajasthani architecture. The effect is decorative and also helps reduce heat. The double skin

acts as a thermal buffer between the building and the surroundings. The density of the perforated outer skin has been derived using computational shadow analysis based on orientation. The outer skin sits four feet away from the building and reduces the direct heat gain through fenestrations, yet allows for diffused daylight. The jaali thus serves the function of three filtersair, light, and privacy. The materials used for construction are a mix of local stone, steel, glass, and concrete; chosen keeping in mind the climatic needs of the region while retaining the progressive design intent. The institute is 100% self-sufficient in terms of captive power and water supply and promotes rain water harvesting and waste water re-cycling. Contact web:www.morphogenesis.org

n our country, there is a certain regard reserved for elephants. They are considered beasts of divinity in three Indian religions – Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. A symbol of friendliness, majesty and dignity, the elephant is even found in the puja room. Despite this, there are just 22,000 elephants remaining in the country. Of these, at least 6000 are in illegal captivity and subject to unimaginable brutality. About 600 elephants are killed each year

They are made to kneel and bless devotees, lift their trunks around 300 times in a day to bless visitors. They are beaten, poked with spears and hooks that dig into their hide and starved during their training process.
