his September sees the London Design Festival, one of the most important events on the global design calendar, mark its tenth anniversary. From the 14th to 23rd of September 2012 a multitude of events will be staged in up to 150 different venues across the city. The festival’s hub is the V&A Museum, which provides a great

starting point to explore the celebrations. Conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans, the festival was originally designed to pay tribute to the capital’s creativity and innovation. The London Design Festival is both a cultural and a commercial event. Since 2003, it has been responsible for major international exhibitions, installations in London’s public spaces and various seminars. On offer are numerous product launches, receptions, private views and parties. The Festival attracts around 350,000 visitors and comprises of over 300 events and exhibitions, staged by hundreds of partner organisations across the design spectrum from around the world.

A number of large group-shows are dotted across the city where new and established exhibitors from the UK and around the world debut their designs. These ‘design destinations’ are the focal points during the festival for conducting business and often the place to spot new design talent and innovations in the market. Within that mix, a number of larger ‘destination exhibitions’ punctuate one’s list of must-visit events, for example, 100% Design, Decorex , Designjunction, Super Brands London and Tent London. 100% Design has been re-launched with a focus on both global and UK based talent by encompassing four distinct areas: Interiors, Kitchens &

shows will present new design from contemporary to classic, industrial to craft, from leading suppliers to the interior design world. The Designjunction will showcase the best in global design against an

industrial backdrop, uniting creative and commercial design devoted to international brands, smaller labels, pop-up shops, large-scale installations and much more. Super Brands London on the other hand has expanded to become a stand-alone event to include over 40 global brands whereas Tent London will present over 200 exhibitors from 25 countries showing a diverse range of contemporary interior products. The London Design Festival has collaborated with Philips, to celebrate LED technology and create a series of temporary lighting interventions, designed by Dominic Harris of Cinimod Studio, in the tunnel entrance to the museum. The London Design Festival along with Veuve Clicquot, the Champagne brand, has commissioned Keiichi Matsuda to deliver Prism at the V&A, a key highlight this year. The Prism presents an alternative view of London, simultaneously engaging three scales: Urban, Human and Networks. Appearing as a giant suspended iceberg set into the V&A’s uppermost cupola, the sculpture will be lit up like a lantern, displaying live data flows on different aspects of the

installation via internal projectors. To mark a decade of celebrating design, the festival will also host the inaugural Global Design Forum to set the global agenda for design. The event will encourage speakers and delegates alike to generate debate on the role of design today and in the future, and identify new ideas and new directions in design through a mix of keynote speeches, panel discussions and case study presentations. A pivotal moment during the festival is the awarding of the London Design Medal which will be announced in an exclusive ceremony on the 17th of September. This is presented to a designer who is considered by a panel of judges to have made a significant contribution to design and to London. The London Design Festival is a key constituent of London’s Autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week and the London Film Festival, it has its sights on enhancing London’s vibrancy as well as its success and future prosperity. agriculture, but since the water was contaminated it was necessary to treat the water and then use it for the said purpose. BBMB roped in Xylem, and by using its (Sequential Batch Reactor) SBR technology with Intermittent Cyclic Extended Aeration System (ICEAS), the process for treating the sewage generated from the township began. The SBR technology used in this project achieves a better quality of treated water. As compared to conventional technologies, where a minimum of four tanks and other additional equipment are required, with this advanced technology and just one tank, it makes the entire project very compact, due to which the construction process gets minimized, and additionally, its technology also helps reduce power

consumption considerably. The project had a comparable saving of around 30 percent of power because it used highly energy efficient diffusers supplied by Xylem. This process removes all nutrients from wastewater, as pollutants like ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and phosphorous play a major role in waste water. Mr. Rahul Sonawane, General Manager (Treatment), Xylem Water Solutions India said, “The project started in 2010 and the authorities were in conversation with us upon which technology should be adopted for this particular sewage treatment plant. SBR turned out to be the apt technology to be implemented which has its own advantage in terms of less capital investment, higher quality of water and less operating cost.” Contact: web: www.xyleminc.com.

by using only around 1 kW of energy per wash (depending on the chosen program). A minimum of 35-40 liters of water is wasted when vessels are washed manually whereas dishwashers utilise water to the optimum level by using only 10-15 liters for one wash cycle (depending on the machine). Dishwashers wash utensils more efficiently and effectively with the help of sensors, which study the turbidity of water and are able to select a wash cycle and water temperature suited to the extent of soiling of the dishes. Stains, grease and oil content, which we usually encounter in Indian cooking can be washed off effectively.

The hot water used to clean utensils in the dishwasher kills 99.99% of the germs making it cleaner and odourless. Considering the space constraint in India, dishwashers are available in two sizes - 12-place setting and 9-place setting which are 60cm wide and 45 cm wide respectively. It can accommodate plates, tea cups and saucers, pots, pans, kadhais, cookers, spoons, knives and forks. changes in architectural paradigms in a world where change is permanent. BY VIKAS BHADRA

introduced by Pippo Ciorra and moderated by Ole Bourman, places into discussion the confrontation between design cultures in the great countries of Eastern Asia and Europe. Wang Shu

The talk intends to compare ideas and cultures which are profoundly diverse within a “common territory” defined by the role of architecture within the current global geopolitical and social scenes. Rahul Mehrotra

The dialogue between the western and eastern cities, between consolidated nations and developing countries, was born from a need to question the urban and architectural theories that have emerged in view of a new urban expression defined by recent geopolitical transformations. Interaction between the east and west of the world, which seems to be a necessary condition in order to identify a new model of urban development, taps into the needs and expectations of a mixed, heterogeneous, and global community. The dialogue of the Greenhouse Talk is thus oriented to address this phenomenon. Pippo Ciorra, architecture curator at the MAXXI-National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, located in Flaminio will lead the conversation. Ciorra has pointed out that the future role of architecture has to be first framed in the dialogue between western architects and designers coming from far and ‘raising’ countries and then articulated in a series of inevitable topics we will all be facing everywhere in the next years. The discussion between the actors and witnesses operating in Europe, India and China, is thus expected to push towards the identification of a new centre for architectural theory and to allow a wide base for global dialogue and cultural confrontation. Mr. Sanjeev Ranjan, Deputy GM, Marketing, Somany Ceramics Ltd. shares with The Inside Track his views on the company’s novel offerings and its move towards an exciting phase of expansion and growth. What are Somany Tiles’ plans in relation to introduction of new varieties this next quarter? Somany will be offering its customers a wider range and tiles in a larger format (larger than their latest 80x80 GVT launch). This will not only help its patrons to give their space a larger than life look but will also have a great impact on the marble market in India. With the large format tiles gaining popularity and advancing technology, these tiles will replace the marble market leading to a transformation in the Indian ceramic industry. How does Somany Tiles market its products abroad? Along with being considered the epitome of quality and durability, not only in India, but also in international markets, Brand Somany vows to keep going from strength to strength in exports with the best, most varied range of wall tiles, floor tiles, sanitary ware and bath fittings. Boasting of its availability in Europe to the Middle East and from Asia to Africa, Somany is a truly global

As the monsoon brings along inevitable harm to the exteriors and interiors of houses and apartments leaving the walls drab and shabby to the dismay of home owners, Somany now has different offerings to prevent damage to houses during this season. Natural finish tiles, active tiles and anti bacterial tiles form their product range. Which has been the most popular? Natural finishes is the trend to look out for this season in tiles. This new range that has been created using innovative digital printing provides enthralling natural material finishes. The technology replicates natural finishes with a photo like finish capturing detailing on every molecule of the tile surface. As elegant as natural materials, tiled floors are easier to lay, look more fashionable

and are quite sustainable. Active tile manufactured using the Active technology is another offering by Somany this season. These tiles are self cleaning as they are able to degrade nitrogen oxides, thus allowing an improvement in the quality of air that we breathe in a relatively short time. Active tiles are also capable of reacting with common air pollutant molecules and hence provide antibacterial properties to the material.

Another great product option for this season is the germ-free tile. Manufactured using an anti bacterial technology which kills germs, these tiles promote a hygienic environment. By laying the anti bacterial tiles, one does not need to rely completely upon anti germ cleaners. Can you throw some light on the anti-bacterial technology used to manufacture germ free tiles? These tiles are able to reduce pollution by cutting out the nitrogen oxides along with some other highly polluting agents present in the atmosphere. They also reduce the odour content in the air.
