nfluenced and shaped by a history that is several millennia old, India is an amalgamation of diverse cultures, traditions and customs. Architecture and design in India has always been a thing of marvel because of its magnanimity, and can be tracked as far back as civilization itself. This diversity in Indian design can also be attributed to different eras. From the preindependence era that saw immense influence of the British to the nationalist era that revived the symbols and motifs popularized by the handicrafts industry. With cut-throat competition prevailing today, brands in India are emerging as powerhouses of good, intelligent design. We see brands experimenting and breaking away from the monotony with quirky additions. With much mingling of details, patterns and styles; these brands have benchmarked themselves in today’s market. These brands are one of us, live in our community and are giving us reasons to trust them more with the impressive products they now offer.

The works of Adam Nathaniel can be classified in two distinctive groups, one of which is a series of classic-shaped brightly coloured ceramics which was proudly on show at the Sir John Soane’s museum in London recently. The other, is an original production of ‘Bitossi’, a historical brand in the ceramic tradition. Exhibited together, both these artworks speak of bright and

thoughtful use of colour in addition to the use of traditional shape to create a suave aesthetic. Nathaniel’s peculiar pop style can be observed through both his pieces for Bitossi as well as the roman singularity which represents a free yet straightforward approach to renew the outlook at design and architecture. triking, durable and environment friendly, Disha Ecoloc Pavers leads you towards an ecological balance. A leading brand of elegant pavements with offices in Nagpur and Mumbai, it has emerged as a choice of aesthetic and practical element for landscapes, parking lots, driveways and patios. These aesthetically designed pavers have come forth as an ideal solution for problems related with water logging and groundwater depletion.

Redifining Outdoor Floor Aesthetics! A leading brand of elegant pavements

in India, Disha Ecoloc Pavers, has been delivering quality products with unsurpassed finish and textures. Most Disha products come with the side-nibs to ensure a percolating gap between two pavers. What are the new, innovative or game changing products recently released by Disha Pavers?

Mr. Nikhil Chawahan

The quality and ruggedness of the products has also gone a long way in helping Disha become the ‘loved one’ of the nation. What steps has Disha Pavers taken towards sustainability? Eco-sustainability is the keyword today. With global warming and large scale de-forestation, the need of the hour is to conserve water and ensure rainwater percolates into the ground. Disha has shot a film that demonstrates the correct laying procedure in terms of layering of the base material and then the final laying, in order to ensure rainwater and sprayed water harvesting.

Could you tell us about your business? Are there any particular products that you specialize in? Founded in 2008, Disha Pavers has always been focused on creating extraordinary outdoor paving solutions that are a few notches above the available spectrum in India. Based in Nagpur, Disha Pavers has a quality intensive manufacturing facility near Nagpur that caters to the requirement of aesthetic paving challenges across India. Of the spectrum manufactured, TuffStone, SlateStone, Aspenstone, Courtstone and Cobblestone are varieties that are unique to Disha.

Disha’s Cobblestone has a predefined set of 74 pieces that go into forming a perfectly laid circle that accentuates the paved area. Could you please account for the pan-India presence of Disha Pavers? Owing to the unique product offerings in terms of design, textures and colours, Disha Pavers has become a much sought after brand in India. Having become the first choice of architects and landscape designers, Disha makes ‘responsible’ pavers in terms of eco-sustainability.

Apart from the unique products mentioned earlier, Disha is all set to launch its new ColoRado range this summer in India. With a unique finish and look ColoRado is sure to be the game changer in the Indian outdoor surface markets. What is the mind-set of the average Indian consumer towards paving materials? How do pavers compare to other building materials? The Indian mindset has always been quality oriented. However, the sensitivity towards environment has increased by leaps and bounds. The aesthetic demand of the Indian customer has also witnessed an upward curve. Indians are now demanding that pavers at par with the best in the world be offered to them. What do you feel are going to be the future trends in this segment in the coming years? What are customers looking for in this segment? Newer designs, colours and textures are going to rule the market in coming years. Professionals are very happy co-ordinating with Disha’s design team to develop newer products. One such instance is the demand for a customized imprint paver. This paver was specially designed by Disha to the satisfaction of the landscape designer and a delivery of 5 lakh sq. ft. was supplied in a record time. Gumpha is a search of the designer looking for a language to answer nature’s callings

The house draws natural light from the circular windows placed along its sides

It is a narration of the most organic response of the architect to the immediate environment. As you move along the path, the land opens up to you, taking you along its winding ways slowly revealing the surrounding, drawing you into atmosphere. You are introduced to gumpha when you least expect it and it comes to meet you, inviting you to delve into it, seek its spaces, and travel its depths. It wants you to discover, explore and find something new each time you walk along. Spearheaded by the principle architect Shailesh Devi and his team at Within N Without aims to make the Gumpha House a space for its users to reconnect with nature. The structure has stone as a dominant construction material.

It almost humors you by appealing to the child in you in playing with itself, making you wonder, drawing you in the insides, taking you along on the roof. At the same time, it helps you search for your inner self as the deep spaces lit by heavenly light offer you tranquility and peace to meditate. Where in the interiors are introvert and contemplative, the exteriors offer you vistas of the surroundings, engaging both joyous and peaceful essences of a man, initiating an intense experience, in turn making you richer by the time you leave for the city. Drawing inspiration from caves with a series of different rooms connected by a network of tunnels, the team has done an admirable job with the project. The house draws natural light from the circular windows placed along its sides. For furnishings, the house is accessorized with cushions, chairs and wooden frames that make up the front entrance and other doors around the house. The form it takes is most organic, where the earth itself seems to breathe in tandem with light to create what can be called as an almost living and sensuous organism, arousing the curiosity with its silent light and playful inquisitive spaces.

G

riin In is a company based in Pune and Mumbai, specialising in these gorgeous ‘vertical gardens’ made of 100% organic products to ensure nature-friendliness and sustainability. Mr. Sujit Jain is the founder and brains behind this much needed go-green initiative. In the concrete jungle we live in and the pollution we breathe in, these vertical gardens are just what the doctor ordered.

Go Green… Vertically!

Low-maintenance ‘gardens’ created in small spaces cleverly using the heights instead of cluttering the widths. The idea of vertical gardening is comparatively new to India and consumers are gradually getting familiar with it. A lot of them feel that vertical gardening requires a lot of maintenance, fertigation and nutrient management is comparatively inconvenient in case of vertical gardening. However that’s not completely correct and one just needs to take help of experts for setting up the vertical gardens.

Could you tell us about your business? GRIIN was founded in the year 2013 with an intention to bring back the greenery to our urban settings where block sizes are shrinking with no yard space. To counter this challenge, GRIIN offers pertinent solutions to create sustainable living walls. These are smart solutions for urbanites to nurture their craving for home gardens where space is a major constraint. GRIIN walls can be adapted to any vertical

movement of heat through thick vegetation mass. Noise Reduction: The plants growing inside the living wall system will contribute to an overall reduction of noise that transmits or reflects from the wall. Clean Air: The plants in your office or home are not only decorative, but NASA scientists have found few varieties of those plants to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside modern buildings.

Mr. Sujit Jain, Founder, Griin Shivangi Shah, surface or even structures without any Creative Head wall support. So far, GRIIN has installed more than 12,500 Sq.Ft. vertical/living walls across Pune and Mumbai for living rooms, roof top gardens, office boardrooms, cafeterias, office receptions, hotels, restaurants & lounges.

Why must one opt for your product? Space: In urban areas, space is the utmost constraint that forces many urbanites not to even think of having home garden. GRIIN wall is a solution that actually helps to create a beautiful ambience on walls whilst overcoming the space constraint. Improved Energy Efficiency: GRIIN wall is an excellent solution to improve a building’s thermal insulation. It creates excellent wind protection during winter months and limits

Striking Aesthetics: Be it an interior or an exterior part of a structure, a vertical garden transforms the entire area in to a stunning visual treat. It also makes a statement that you care about the environment. Maintenance: GRIIN walls are easy to maintain and are a perfect pick for busy urbanites since only tissue cultured & disease free plants are used along with a fully automated and sensor based Irrigation technology. In addition to this, the media used for GRIIN walls is 100% organic with good water holding capacity that helps to lower down water consumption. It also does not require any chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals for 2-3 years for the growth of plants. It also contains a natural insect repellent ingredient, which lowers insect attacks. What steps has GRIIN taken towards a sustainable, recyclable and/or organic material?

What do you feel are going to be the future trends in this segment in the coming years?

The overall idea of GRIIN is to restore natural balance and be nature friendly in every possible manner. For an example, the media used for GRIIN walls is 100% organic and the tray and pockets which are used for plants are made of recyclable materials and the media pouches are bio-gradable in nature. In addition to this GRIIN uses only organic fertilizers for its plants.

Considering the environmental threats, vertical gardens represent an idea about sustainability that’s worth weighing in. In coming years vertical gardens will be an integral part of every commercial and residential set up. We will see them across a lot of public properties also.

What is the new and innovative product recently released by GRINN?

GRIIN offers real as well as artificial plants; however we strongly promote real plants instead of artificial ones. GRIIN uses a fully automated and sensor based irrigation technology that makes the watering process completely hassle free. In addition this, the media used for GRIIN walls instead of soil is 100% organic with good water holding capacity that helps to lower down water consumption. It also does not require any chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals for 1-1.5 years for the growth of plants. Contact web: info@griin.in Contact: +91 95617 24063

We noticed that some people want green elements in their houses however they don’t want to do anything with their walls. Hence GRIIN has come up with freestanding and movable indoor/outdoor modular living walls that can slide over any hard surface and can be placed against a wall or in the middle of a room with the help of recessed wheels. What is the mind-set of the average Indian consumer towards ‘Green wall structures’?

What kind of material do you use for your product?

With its constant focus on innovative design, the company produces new ranges of products every year that are used in the trendiest residences and restaurants. The best European technologies were brought and modified to create a unique product suited to Indian conditions. How do cement tiles compare to other materials for floors and walls? Cement is incredibly durable. Floors can last up to 60 to 70 years if used and maintained properly. In addition to this, the tiles can be re-polished a number of times, giving them a brand new look as well as take considerable wear and tear during their life. What are the new forms of flooring in demand? New forms of flooring have emerged and changed existing traditional materials. Designers have started using a lot of concrete materials, including patterned cement tiles and micro-toppings. ‘Heritage™’ tiles have become the rage and the patterns used have started reflecting modern sensibilities with pastel colours, lots of geometric and minimalist designs, as well as some funky use of tile designs to create Ikats. Cement based micro toppings can be used indoors as well as outdoors and with virtually unlimited design options and quick installation time, micro cement floors can turn any space into a vibrant and beautifully designed area. Life In A Bitsy Abode With the need for sustainable architecture at

its zenith, this UK based architecture firm has left no stone unturned. BY VANDANA KRISHNAN

The interior is lined in used shuttering, plywood and all the joinery, including the two staircases and is crafted from plywood offcuts

The firm designed and built this mobile prototype for just £20,000 ($28,105 USD) using a combination of construction waste and locally grown unseasoned timber. Breaking away from the monotony, this one-of-a-kind structure is located in the woods near Invisible Studio’s workspace and is named “Traile”. The 430square-foot Trailer project gets its name from the trailer the built structure sits on.

19

Essentially, the architects designed the building with the intent to transport it legally on a public highway and added a removable wheeled “bogey” beneath the steel chassis for ease of use. In a way, the structure was conceptionalised as something that could be modified as per the requirement of the user and adapt accordingly. The studio has used locally found materials for construction. To add on to this, there has been a conscious effort to use recycled materials as well;

The firm has built this cabin using a combination of construction waste and locally grown unseasoned timber

the results of which are impressive. The project is low-cost, transportable and versatile. This multifunctional structure follows the mimics of Invisible Studio’s previous projects such as Ghost Barn and their own studio space, both of which were built from timber that was sustainably grown and managed on site. Corrugated fiberglass and steel clad the building, while high-performance interlocking polycarbonate panels cover the

two gabled ends to allow an ample amount of natural light indoors. The interior is lined in used shuttering, plywood and all the joinery, including the two staircases and is crafted from plywood offcuts. Leftover blue rope, sourced from a previous project, is used for the handrails. The doors and insulation were also reclaimed and the roof lights were purchased as factory seconds. Through these keepsakes we try to bring back the memory of that experience. Quirky souvenirs depicting the essence of a place through its colours and graphics have always been a favorite collectible for travel junkies. Giving the idea of souvenirs an interesting twist, the Sator Space design studio has come up with an ingenious approach to the old school fridge magnets. Founded by the two brothers, Dénes and Tomas Sátor, Sator Space was born out of the will to explore and relive the known world with a different and unexpected outlook. Magnets As Memoirs Sator Space designs magnets inspired

from the 60s and 70s Hungarian apartments. BY AVANI PATWARDHAN

Real life elements like the pets, bikes, sunshades or locals represent the buzzing inner life in these neighborhoods in a strikingly colourful palette

The Hungarian low-cost concrete paneled four to ten story apartment buildings from the 60s and 70s have never been much appreciated among tourists because their so called ‘panels’ are seen as gloomy, lifeless, rundown and don’t usually catch the attention of tourists. To bring a change to this preconception, the Sator Space design studio has changed the retro and mundane feel of the panels into miniature eccentric fridge magnets. Being fast and cheap to build, the panels can still be found in the former eastern bloc countries.

The studio has come up with square shaped magnets which are thinner than 0.4 mm to incorporate the traditional infrastructure units of these panels such as low ceilings, ultra-thin walls, and standardized facades in its design. The relatable real life elements like the pets, bikes, sunshades or locals represent the buzzing inner life in these neighborhoods in a strikingly colourful palette. Several sets of apartment blocks can be built easily from the even pieces with thousands of inhabitants. With a goal to educate and inspire tourists and help them understand a

different side of Budapest, the fridge magnets created by the studio help us explore an essential part of the history and contemporary life of the city. Stepping away from the regular mainstream template souvenirs, these give a peek into the apartment life in Hungary and grabs the attention of the tourists. With a goal to prompt people to get off the regular track and wander around and indulge in the life of the local neighborhood, Sator Space offers the entire set to recreate the neighborhood with the magnets.
