n a world where we have more vertical space than horizontal, the only way out is up! Gone are the days when floors, walls and furniture were treated with the same mundane finishes that made up a home. With surfaces making their mark in the market with ground breaking innovations, the design industry is scheduled for a big rehabilitation! Surfaces are an integral part of this up-climb and contribute visually in addition to functional use. Wallpapers have been making a mark in the market for some time now and there are some formidable new innovations that are creating a global stir. Eve r w o n d e re d i f h u m a n interaction with wallpaper would result in a reaction from the paper? Or if a tech savvy hacker neighbor decided to steal your Wi-Fi which was being blocked by… well… paper?!? Now, such creative wallpapers have entered the industry that can do all of the above. Let’s delve into some of these materials that help transition us from regular to ‘smart’.

THE INSIDE TRACK August 2018

continued from page 2 That would really be something else. With the likes of renowned artists Shi Yuan among others introducing a brand new concept which actually has your wall surfaces changing colour on their own, the design industry can tuck away yet another one under its belt. We have all seen colour changing fabrics and films but now we have the indulgence of touch and temperature controlled wallpaper created via the impregnation of thermochromic inks into it. Heat reactive surfaces have a number of amazing applications but one of the most impressive is the color-changing wallpaper which is visibly livened up due to interactivity. Heat rising from a wall mounted radiator can cause a design change while the warmth of one’s hands can add colour to a previously monotonous background. As the temperature rises within a room, the flowers on a branch slowly bloom, breathing additional life and color into a given space. As night falls and cooler temperatures prevail, the colorful flower print slowly fades back to a mellow green. Thermochromic inks can be activated by conductive threads and a power source, creating a display that changes colour. How this works is that the paper is injected with thermochromic ink which changes colour in response to body heat and also invites people to create different designs through touch making it a fun activity. These patterns remained pressed on the surface only to change back to its setting once it changes back to room temperature. Thermochromic inks take advantage of thermochromism, which refers to materials that change their hues in response to temperature fluctuations. Still hate that lime green?

The ultimate surface in the home illumination segment is the light-emitting wallpaper created by a young enterprising Netherlands designer, Jonas Samson

Pony up for the right paint and on a warm day, it could morph from a Kermit the Frog hue into a more tolerable sunshine yellow. These inks first hit the mainstream in the 1970s, appearing in one of that era’s lasting icons - the mood ring, which supposedly used the wearer’s body heat as a sign of his or her emotional state. Not limited to just wallpaper, of course, this same strategy by Shi Yuan can be applied to posters or other decorative objects - and can encourage people to touch and otherwise interact with normally stationary and passive designs. Likewise, as a reminder of each passing day, the cooling of night can erase the current date on your wall-mounted calendar and show the passing of time into the next. What’s more, with the use of conductive inks made with silver particles, the wallpaper not only contains touch sensors but also special speakers that are imprinted into it.

Luminescent Essence Light-emitting wallpaper that doubles up as a light source, redefines things in an out-of-date space. The ultimate surface in the home illumination segment is the light-emitting wallpaper created by a young enterprising Netherlands designer, Jonas Samson. Lighting has always played an extremely vital role in the ambience of a space, especially in changing moods and sizing up or down of rooms. The elements that come together when the right lighting is achieved transform a room into a seamless combination of functionality and style. However, there is a brand new concept of adding light to a room without actually buying multiple fixtures to create an ambience - Light emitting wall paper. This wallpaper owes its appealing luminescence to lightemitting LEDs’ embedded in the wall covering. Tiny, thin and cool, LEDs allow wallpaper designers to create innovative wallpapers that double as light sources - they can even be adjusted to provide as much light as needed or desired.

How does it work? Samson explained that the wallpaper actually uses existing technology, but applies it in a different way-The base material is made from commercially available products that are manufactured by a number of companies. What is done, though, is that this technology is applied in a different way. Delving deeper, he revealed that the wallpaper is constructed by ‘sandwiching’ a number of layers together that combine to produce light. The back layer is a silver-based solution that conducts electricity, while the layer above this contains phosphorous pigments that light up. On top of this is a flexible, transparent Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) conductor layer with regular wallpaper placed on top to act as the final, outwardly visual layer. The result- when it’s switched on is a visually stunning wall-of-light that can be turned off and on, just like a regular light. This creation was first revealed at the public at the Milan Design Week and it seems to be a must-have for those who can afford it. Given that everything is designed from scratch and made to order, there are no set costs for installation but would go as per custom requirements.

ven with designers reaching new norms and experimenting with new methods every day, it was a groundbreaking revelation when Dutch born Cincinnati based Mark deJong launched a threestorey ‘Swing House’, designed in a manner that appears to be of a surreal floating effect.

Art Marries Construction Mark deJong turns renovation,

restoration and residential revitalization into a transformative art. BY NEERJA KAPADIA

While swinging, your legs would skim right above the kitchen and bed with a considerable clearance in between

The exterior is fairly mundane, n e s t l e d i n a n a r r ow l y b u i l t neighborhood in Cincinnati, but the interior makes does one over on you! All the three levels of the room have been gutted to create an open floor plan void of any civil bodies that can act as an obstruction to the focal point - a single swing positioned at the centre of the space. With a hybridization of art with construction knowledge up his sleeve, deJong’s unique mind created this brilliant masterpiece designed according to the arc of the swing! This arc dictated where the stairs, bed as well as kitchen would be situated.

All the levels of the room have been gutted to create an open floor plan void of any civil bodies that can act as an obstruction to the focal point - a single swing positioned at the center of the space

While swinging, your legs would skim right above the kitchen and bed with a considerable clearance in between. The seat of the swing was formed from reddish pine salvaged from inside the home. Its naturalfiber rope attachments extend thirty feet into the air and are secured into a metal beam from the home’s three-story ceiling. It is here that deJong painted a black and white hour glass shape, a nod to the motif of passing time represented in the pendulumlike swing. After working in construction for several decades post graduating art school, this lifelong dream, which was incepted right after, was put for hold for nearly twenty years. Being a true artist, he leapt back in time to finish what he conceptualized. The installation took three years to build but he finally made his dream come true. The Swing House was a way for him to marry his formal training to his lifelong desire. This type of gutted architecture makes a mark in the world as deJong joins the lineage of artists like Gordon Matta-Clarke, George Rousse and Theastere Gates in the illuminating re-visioning of built space into performative and poetic interventions.

The house exudes not only a sense of comfort and peace but also a strong sense of belonging to its dwellers. Rafiq Azam in one of his talks claims the idea of space creation in architecture first came to his mind when he was building a house for his mother. Understanding her requirements, incorporating her past, and her current lifestyle to create a livable space for her, helped him look at architecture from a different perspective. Contact web: www.shatottogreen.com

The Bhuiyan Bari is a house built with pastoral shades of grey and brown using materials like concrete and wood

The firm began with its aim to bring back the lost heritage and culture of Bengal and make it available to the people through architecture. The firm tries to incorporate the architectural values important in any space and at the same time looks at the aspect of sustainable architecture. The Bhuiyan Bari is one such project built by them in Dhaka. As per client requirements, the brief was to build a house in the outskirts of Dhaka, to avoid a citylife and enjoy the benefits of the beautiful landscape and greenery available on site.

Considering these requirements, the firm has built a house with pastoral shades of grey and brown using materials like concrete and wood and the tranquility of water to add to its aesthetic. To adhere to the climate of the region, the south of the structure opens up to the landscape and provides a picturesque countryside view that keeps the house breezy and calm all throughout the day. A natural water channel flows through the house and keeps the space calm and fresh. The finished look of the raw concrete complements the messy yet serene greenery surrounding the house.

Built by iStudio architecture, the house is a clear reflection of their building ideals and their architectural philosophy. The form of the house is such that it emerges from the earth and spirals its way into the skyline, in a flowy and continuous manner. The fortifying cylindrical spaces complement the spiral roof forms. The house revolves around the idea of discovery and unravels new spaces as one moves through the interiors of the house. The soft sunlight that falls into the central water body at the entrance of the house is a warm welcoming feature. Each space flows into another along curved lines, leading into a seamless space held by the central courtyard.

The 2400 sq ft house, located in Wada, is set with a backdrop of picturesque hills and farms

As one begins his journey from the jaali wall entrance to the interiors of the house, he gets glimpses of dramatic use of materials and forms that blend with a spectacular composition of shadow and light. Two huge arches made from brick and stone are the main features of the interior space and add playfulness to the space. The built-in furniture provided in the house are in conjugation with its surfaces as they seem to rise and fall from the walls or floor and appear to mix into each other with clever use of materials and forms. The organic form leads one arched staircase which takes us to the upper floor of the house. The bedroom on the upper floor of the house provides shade to the central courtyard and keep the water-body cool. Constructed using materials such as bricks, stone, wood, bamboo and ferro-cement in their naked form, the house gives an earthy feel to the overall space. Eco-friendly building techniques that blend with the aesthetic of the house have been used such as rat-trap bonds, brick jaalis, built in furniture, to name a few that additionally reduce the overall cost of the project. Inspired from the works of architects such as Nari Gandhi, and Laurie Baker, this house in Maharashtra proves to be an exceptional piece of architecture that eco-friendly yet aesthetically pleasing. Could you tell us about Classic Marble Company (CMC)? What is the inspiration behind the products? Classic Marble Company (CMC) is India’s leading manufacturer and supplier of natural and engineered stones. Founded over two decades ago, CMC is one of the first Indian companies that introduced engineered marble and quartz in the country. KalingaStone, CMC’s flagship brand for engineered products was incepted in the year 2009. The company has a portfolio of over 700 products that has all the possible varieties in natural marble, granite, travertine, onyx and other exotic stones, including the engineered marble and quartz varieties.

A Classic Tale

Classic Marbles engages with The Inside Track on what makes them the leading suppliers in the surface industry.

Product display at CMC’s Mumbai Showroom

We offer the most vivacious collection of semiprecious natural stone titled as 9 th Avenue. The exclusive collection comprises of the rarest and most exquisite natural stones found on earth. The limited edition of high-end, first choice materials are displayed at CMC’s boutique gallery in Silvassa. KalingaStone’s 2,00,000 sq. m. manufacturing plant in Silvassa has the world’s finest polishing machines from SIMEC (Italy) with 36 polishing heads which impart the desired glossiness to the finished product. The factory produces 30 million sq. ft. of composite marble and quartz per annum and its block gantry can store up to 2100 blocks (approx. 3,000,000 sq. ft.) of marble and quartz. It also markets the best ultra-thin, large format porcelain tiles - Iris and Techlam which are internationally known for quality and range. What steps has CMC taken towards a sustainable future? CMC’s KalingaStone marble and quartz, and also the Techlam and Iris range of porcelain tiles are ecofriendly materials. KalingaStone marble products are made from natural marble aggregates that are mined from quarries. Also, the water used during the manufacturing process is recycled and reused. CMC’s brand for engineered marble, KalingaStone is the most preferred choice in India as well as in international market due to the versatility it offers in dimensions, consistency in colours and design patterns. The products are available in over 70 shades and patterns, and can also be customized.

Being less porous, more flexible and harder than natural marble makes it a favourite choice for multiple applications. KalingaStone marble products are available in standard dimensions of 304 cm X 125 cm and thickness choices of 12 mm, 16mm and 18 mm. KalingaStone Quartz is one of the hardest stones typically used in utility applications, has longest lifespan and doesn’t weather under the harshest conditions. The stone is non-porous and hence is highly sanitary and stain-resistant. The quartz products are available in standard dimensions of 335 cm × 165 cm and thicknesses of 12 mm, 15mm, 20mm and 30 mm. Techlam, large size porcelain slabs are globally adopted for a majority of indoor and outdoor flooring applications. The products have anti-graffiti properties and offer flexibility in installation. The 3mm thick Techlam slabs are available in the size of 3000mm x 1000mm and in 40 unique shades and designs. Iris is the biggest ceramic tile ever made and is trending in the home office deco industry. What are the new, innovative or game changing products recently released by you? CMC has recently launched two

new collections in the KalingaStone marble range - Terrazzo and Stone & Luce. The products are a huge success across markets, both Indian and international. The Terrazzo is a beautiful speckled marble slab that has been inspired by the Venetian designs. The Stone & Luce is a variant of the Terrazzo with the distinguishing element being its opacity. This new product is made translucent for light to pass through the marble bringing out the beauty of the embedded chips in the slab. What is the mind-set of the average Indian consumer towards tiles? How do your products compare to other brands? CMC specializes in marble but it also markets one of the best large format tiles in India. The concept of large format tiles is yet to be evolved in our country. Techlam and Iris are the ultra-large, slim format tiles, which despite being large and thin are stronger and more durable than the conventional tiles. The unique features of the tiles, namely their slimness, large size and varied applications are being appreciated and well received by architects, interior designers and home owners. What do you feel are going to be the future trends in this segment in the coming years? How do you plan to stay ahead of competition? The future will witness more products that are eco-sensitive and that rate on sustainability. has been at the forefront of innovation and quality. We work on the principal that embodies progress with sustainability. his is a story of a very old, very dilapidated IndoPortuguese property in the picturesque locality of Fontainhas, Goa. Jonathan Fernandes, a New York based architect and internationally renowned interior designer Isla Van Damme together, transformed this 100-year old crumbled structure and restored it to its former glory in the form of Mateus - A boutique hotel. Fontainhas is popular among foreign travellers with a number of them being art aficionados. Painted in radiant yellow, this objet d’art lies tucked amidst heritage listed homes and winding alleyways. What now seems like a beautifully created structure lying at ease within its context was actually, at times, a relentless journey filled with challenges. Since it was to become a boutique hotel, a number of basic structural changes took place during the refurbishment of this building. The hotel now has nine elegantly appointed rooms. Each room is uniquely designed in keeping with an Old Portuguese feel with Damme exploiting the intrinsic beauty of the little nooks, niches and lofts that are scattered throughout the mansion. The old mansion only consisted 2 bathrooms which had to be changed since every room was required to have its own bathroom. Almost all rooms have adequate cross ventilation and are air conditioned with all vents placed in one corner rather than having them hang loose around the building’s facades which would spoil its aesthetics.

I

n the highly competitive bath industry, Ms Emanuela Tavolini, Director of Sales, Europe, explains how they stay ahead of the competition.

Vertically Integrated Graff proves to be the benchmark brand

in the market by focusing on quality and cutting-edge designs. What are the current trends in the bathroom segment and how are Indian customers reacting to your products?

Ms. Emanuela Tavolini, Director of Sales, Europe, Graff

When and where did Graff originate? Graff is part of the Meridian International Group, located U.S.A. Since the early 70s’, Meridian has been producing faucets, valves, shower components and other machined products for some of the world’s leading companies in the plumbing sector. In order to meet the increasing demands of the American market, Meridian International Group acquired Valvex, a European valve and faucet manufacturer founded in 1922. In 2010, to strengthen its market presence in Europe, Graff created a branch office in Florence, Italy. Today, Graff continues to grow, testing and developing luxury bath collections. Do you have any new product launches in 2018? During the recent fair, Salone del Mobile in Milan, Graff presented 4 new faucet collections to be launched on the market in 2018: Incanto, Camden, Harley and Vintage.

Technology combined with aesthetics provides a full wellness experience inside the bathrooms

Incanto is characterized by modern square lines and consists of several faucet variations for washbasins, bathtubs and shower areas. These items include single lever and a threehole option, as well as a full range of matching accessories. Incanto was created under the inspiration of contemporary design and is Graff’s new glamorous collection including deck-mounted, wall-mounted and free-standing elements. Harley mixes contemporary forms with shapes reminiscent of the past. With a modest industrial look, reflected in the tubular, softly squared spout, Harley finds a more refined style in the distinctive circular handle. Unparalleled in design, the handle is characterized by a three-ended star, reinterpreted in a sleek form.

Incanto is characterised by modern square lines and consists of several variations

Harley is also available with a lever handle option, easily recognizable by its knurled detailing. Camden’s style is transitional and highly unique, allowing it to fit into both settings. Blending Victorian and Edwardian aesthetics with modern principles and technologies, each fixture exhibits a luxurious artistic quality. Vintage is an outstanding collection with a strong reference to the past. With its marked industrial taste, the collection is impressive for its size, strong personality and the variety of models. The spout openly recalls the looks of industrial pipes and the round handles seduce for their symmetrical shape. Vintage is available for the bathroom and shower areas. What steps has Graff taken towards a sustainability? All Graff products are manufactured in accordance with the innovative concept of Lean Manufacturing Management, which aims to eliminate excess consumption of time, energy and materials so that each process achieves substantial efficiency standards. Even in the casting process and in the finishing and galvanic treatments, Graff utilizes a zero discharge system that recycles 100% of brass and paper. In line with the strong commitment to environmental sustainability, Graff is among one of the first companies in the world to have publicly expressed willingness to actually eliminate its impact on the environment.

Recently we have seen an increasing trend in the demand of shower products that offer multifunctional solutions. The market is going more and more towards a concept of wellness for private use by recreating small spas in private residences or in the hospitality field. Graff is following this trend having introduced manifold solutions of shower heads with rainfall, cascade, mist and LED technology. The products, in some cases can also be controlled with touchpad or remote control, belong to our new collection Aquasense. Thanks to the technology, combined with aesthetics, with Graff solutions it is possible to have a full wellness experience inside the bathroom. Where do you see your company in 5 years from now? Our company is gradually consolidating its presence globally by offering technologically advanced products with a European design and a guaranteed standard in terms of quality and compliance with regulations. Graff products are on the rise for the hotel and residential segment. For this reason we expect Graff to grow over the next few years not only on the US and European markets but also in several Far East and emerging markets. Contact web: www.graff-faucets.com

ith the changing perception of sustainable architecture, and the inception of the term ‘global local’, we find very few projects dedicated completely to creating an environment friendly space. However, the Manasaram architects, an architectural firm based in Bangalore has built an office proves to be not only sustainable but also built with a modern and chic outlook. The Bamboo Symphony, the office space for their own firm is built adjacent to the principal architect’s residence in Venkateshpura in the outskirts of Bangalore. With a very tight budget in mind, the space has been built using low-cost material like waste wood, bamboo, stone boulders, debris, and mud but using innovative techniques. The office space boasts to be a Zero Energy Development site and produces equal amount of energy as it consumes using on-site processes and technologies.

The open interior of the office is levelled according to the terrain and is stepped in a spiral configuration that defines different spaces in the office. The curved foundation and retaining wall is made up of mud blocks and stone boulders. An undulating precast concrete roof supported on bamboo beams and columns overlooks into a central pond and allows for water to flow into it for rain water harvesting. Labelled as ‘poor man’s material’, bamboo has been used throughout the structure extravagantly, and adds to the charm of the space. Other materials that have been used include bamboo sticks and splits for light fixtures, waste pet bottles for garden lights, and Bamboos with LEDs. The office is fully open from the south which allows for the southwest winds to blow through the space without obstruction, thus keeping the space naturally ventilated at all times. The open planning and the white Ferro-cement ceilings keep the work zone bright and naturally lit throughout the day. With the roof as its most prominent feature, the Bamboo Symphony is a space built as a model for an open and friendly work environment. It is an example of how material can be used in innovative ways to create low-cost yet classy spaces. Contact email: mansarch@gmail.com web: www.manasaramarchitects.com
