he Mumbai Port Trust area spans about 10 kms along the Eastern Waterfront and is one of the best waterfront properties located in the heart of Mumbai city. Due to the shifting out of commercial port activities an area of about 500 hectares has now become available for reuse. This underutilized land offers a historical opportunity to fulfil the demand for public space for citizens of Mumbai. It can create the much needed social and recreational public amenities that the city sorely lacks. The master plan for the Mumbai Port Complex (MPC) has been proposed to meet dual objectives - of repurposing port lands and integrating it with the rest of the city to provide public spaces and facilities to the citizens. However, it also proposes to develop a new financial centre, a Government office, hotels, commercial as well as residential properties in close proximity to the proposed metro line and the existing sub-urban railway stations.

The master plan for the Mumbai Port Complex (MPC) has been proposed to meet dual objectives - of repurposing port lands and integrating it with the rest of the city to provide public spaces and facilities to the citizens

The waterfront area is proposed as a tourist and recreational zone which will have features such as the Mumbai Eye, Tourist Ferry Services, Cruises and a Ropeway Connection to Elephanta Caves (proposed to be the world’s longest ropeway of about eight

kilometres) among other things. The project also aims to preserve heritage structures like the Sewri Fort, Ghadiyal Godi (Clock Tower) as well as the environmentally sensitive mudflats and mangroves that attract flamingos and other flora and fauna.

The Eastern waterfront layout has plans for an amphitheatre with a seating for 250 people, a 2500 sq. meters skating rink, a scenic walkway for jogging, cycling and continued on page 2

The Mumbai port is expected to handle seven hundred cruises this year. The domestic terminal is also already operational with routine travel happening from Mumbai to Goa. Plans are underway to make connections to other Konkan and Gujarat ports. A one kilometre long integrated transport hub is also in the pipeline which will have modern amenities in addition to the Ro-Pax terminal to dock over hundred yachts and also an exclusive Marina Hospitality Centre. This will be located at the Princess Docks.

Due to all these developments, the expected increase in the vehicular traffic has also been foreseen and an evacuation plan to control that is in the making. This plan covering an area of seventy hectares with new road links of 1.5 kilometres is being developed to provide parking facilities for five hundred cars. A substantial amount of work is already complete and the new traffic flow is slated to be operational in a few months. Additionally, the lofty ambitions continue in the development of ‘Kanhoji Angre’, a beautiful pristine island with a heritage lighthouse.

Even though it is located in Mumbai, it sadly hasn’t been accessible to people but now, with a jetty along with other internal facilities being built, this will truly become the ‘it’ venue for heralding new opportunities of leisure and adventure. healthcare facilities, an amphitheatre, an open exhibition space and multicuisine restaurants. It will cover a total area of approximately 13.45 Ha. The future development will also open up multiple east-west street connections to connect Mumbai to the Eastern Waterfront.Of these proposed developments, some of which are already complete and functional, some of which are on-going and many still waiting for the necessary approvals, the vision that Mumbai Port Trust has for Mumbai is nothing short of revolutionary.

The Ro-Ro terminal is soon to be operational with facilites that allow you to drive your car on to a special ferry for a journey to Alibaug and oher nearby destinations

The international terminal is an ambitious project (a functional building is active while a swanky new building is currently being constructed)

To use Mumbai to its true potential with its actual strength-‘water’, the intent is ambitious enough to be at par with most of the developed countries of the western world. Lets just hope that all these public amenities and facilities see the light of day and this proposed ‘green-blue’ escape for Mumbaikars doesn’t get overrun by a dense concrete jungle. uravit stands out at the 2018 German Design Awards with a Special Mention for the new Brioso bathroom furniture range and three ‘Winner’ accolades for the XSquare, Shower+Bath and DuraSystem series. The Special Mention recognizes works with designs demonstrating particularly successful details or solutions. This award honors the commitment of companies and designers. With ‘Brioso’, Duravit and designer Christian Werner have created a range of furniture that represents relaxation, freshness and joie de vivre for contemporary bathroom interiors. Its distinctive features include a precise, finely nuanced geometry produced by slender cabinet frames that form the edges of the furniture, mirrors, and mirror cabinets.

The XSquare bathroom furniture range combines different materials

Duravit created the XSquare furniture range with Kurt Merki Jr. to match the style of the DuraSquare washbasins. The quadrant-shaped chrome profile which edges the furniture emphasizes the striking design. While on the floor-standing model, the transition to the base is absolutely seamless, the chrome profile accentuates the frame of both variants. It continues the corner radius of the washbasin, creating harmony and at the same time a distinctly unique touch. The ingenious Shower+Bath unites a contemporary idea with creative use of space: the design by EOOS features a walk-in shower and bathtub in one.

The integrated glass door turns the bathtub quickly and easily into an open shower with straightforward access. With the DuraSystem® installation frames, Duravit offers an entire range of bathroom fittings, in front of and behind the wall, from a single source. The electronic ‘A2’ sensor plate in white glass permits contactfree operation. The modern, timeless design enriches any bathroom and increases the users’ comfort with numerous customizable features from adjusting the flush volume to odor extraction. The German Design Award is a premium international prize given by the Rat für Formgebung (Council for Design). Its aim is to discover, present and honor distinctive design trends. Duravit has already received ten awards in 2018 including the IF Award, the Red Dot Award and now the German Design Award 2019 as well as over 170 international design awards since the start of the 1990s. The Design Gallery showcased the narratives woven through its production process including the craft and the craftsmanship involved and then finally the end product was seen as a ‘Collectable’ rather than merely a functional object.” He continued, “Over the last decade, we have seen a surge of young Indian designers with a strong design identity that needs a representation beyond a retail setup. The need for a design gallery within India was the springing point of the event that we brought out together”. Designs of 60 distinguished designers were showcased at this three-day design show along with a ‘Raw Talk Series’, addressing different facets of art, design, and architecture. Tree Chronicles

Samira Rathod Design Atelier documents the historic Rani Bagh in a book and draws attention to the diverse and exotic varieties of trees it encompasses. BY NEERJA KAPADIA

Samira Rathod Design Atelier has researched Mumbai’s only heritage botanical garden and documented the book, ‘Museum of Trees’

Formerly and popularly called Rani Baug, after the original British name Victoria Gardens, it is now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & the Zoo. It is in the absolutely heart of an urban thicket in Byculla in Mumbai. Rani Baug boasts of a rich and velvety green topography and garden that covers over fifty acres of area. Being the oldest public garden, it draws massive visitation from locals and tourists alike. The garden also houses the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, a staff building in Greco-Roman style erected

in the memory of Lady Frere an equestrian statue of King Edward VII of England made of black marble known as Kala Ghoda and the David Sassoon clock tower. While the zoo does house some endangered species like the the Asiatic lion, jungle cat, palm civet cat, porcupine, gaur, mouse deer, leopard and others, the environment created by the gardens is what scores over the metal caging that objectifies the wild animals. The trees are the saving grace of this now fading garden. Giving a picturesque green visual, one can

Plan of the Rani Baug, Byculla

The zoo has deteriorated massively and the fate of the trees is also of concern. Samira Rathod Design Atelier has researched Mumbai’s only heritage botanical garden and documented the book, ‘Museum of Trees’ which not only addresses sustainability issues of preservation but also highlights the 3000 trees of over 300 species. These plants are a collection from different parts of the Colonial world. Acting as evidence of the British rule, the garden has collected centuries of resources of the flora and fauna brought in by countries like Madagascar, Cuba, Venezuela, Peru, Australia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka to name a few. The book states that the documentation of the few trees from the Baug is kind of an exposition of the finer details of the various parts of the trees showing the intricacies of the way in which the plant has grown. The patterns of the barks, veins of the leaves, soft lines of the flowers and

figures of the fruits makes one tree distinguishable from the other. The list of some of the trees chronicled are Rubber Fig tree, Indian Elm, Cacao, Rose of Venezuela, Monkey’s Ear, Eucalyptus, Cajeput, Talipot Palm, Kauri Pine, Elephant Apple, Cannonball, Baobab, Kanak Champa, Khat, Rain tree, Flame of the forest, Lignum Vitae, Peepal, Pride of India, Jack Fruit, Guest tree, Whistling Pine, Ashoka, Krishna’s Buttercup, Burmese Pink Cassia, Ebony, Copper pod, African Tulip and Yellow Tiger Bamboo. Rani Bagh, once a majestic terrain of exotic flora, still has the makings of a successful public space and the book also sparks a debate between developing the zoo or a botanical garden.

While Rathod believes that it should be converted to the latter along with a research centre and an amphitheatre, her team is working on a proposal to refurbish and redesign the zoo to make it more accessible to public. The master bedroom faces the road with a large standout and a children’s bed room is pushed to the rear end. Sky lights in the roof ensure privacy and keep the interiors filled with light all the times, giving the end user flexibility to keep windows closed for privacy.

acation homes are usually built for people who need to leave the busy mundane routine and head out to spend a couple of stress-free days to unwind. Families with people of varied ages tend to sometimes deal with friction among each other due to conflict of interests when on break. One family decided not to sacrifice any of their downtime and hired a brilliant team of architects to follow through with their dream vacation home somewhere along the exotic lush locales of Chile. The Split House, as the name suggests, is a 270 sq. mt. vacation home set on the edge of Chile’s Lake Rupanco that is ‘split’ into separate volumes for adults and children. The house is angled in structures that are situated in such a way that ensures that both have views of the lake and volcano Osomo. Wanting neither the ‘adult’ nor the ‘youth’ sections to give up on the stunning locales, utmost care has been taken to ensure that both have equally unadulterated and uncompromised views of the rich natural surroundings.

HSL Team was hired to design their client’s dream vacation home somewhere along the exotic lush locales of Chile

Minimal in its approach, the ceilings and walls are all adorned with wood to further add warmth to this otherwise modern home

If there was ever a dream vacation home that one could want, this is it. Architects Gabriel Rudolphy and Ian Hsu of studio Hsu-Rudolphy have proposed the geometry of this house craftily creating an airy living space by building minimal walls, still managing to keep the structure homey and convivial. The dramatically sloped roof lines extend out over floor-toceiling windows that give each space lots of natural light and views of the surrounding area. Living spaces flow right outside to the large decks. Furthermore all the facades are in steel and glass giving uninterrupted views and a communion of sort from the inside to the lush green landscape outside. Minimal in its approach, the ceilings and walls are all adorned with wood to further add warmth to this otherwise modern home. Since the area where the Split House is located is difficult to access, it was decided that they would work with a local workforce with a known construction system. The structure is wooden, standing 2x4 rights, and 2x8 beams. Punctual steel beams were used to solve the larger light access. Remarkably privately located with expansive views of its surroundings, this outstanding work of architecture not only satisfies the clients’ every need but also visually brings delight to any appreciative eye. ompetitions are a sure shot way of generating groundbreaking outcomes from talented and motivated individuals. One such competition was the Yangjaegogae Eco Bridge design competition commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Aptly named, Slopewalk is a 28,000 sq. ft. mountain-inspired bridge designed by the winning Lithuanian team, KILD, proposing a structure evoking the pictorial passage through the southern slopes of the two discontinued mountain peaks of Mt. Umyeon and Maljukgeori Parks. Seeing a current infrastructural void, the project aims to unite the two neighbouring mountain parks over the Gyeongbu Expressway, as a continuation of the sloped landscape. Uniting both peaks, the green bridge includes dual lanes for human and animal traffic. An upper slope for wildlife mirrors the mountain terrain, while a straight path provides access for humans. The architecture collective, composed of Ivane Ksnelashvili, Petras Išora and Ona Lozuraitytė took inspiration from Korean landscape paintings in designing the form of the bridge, which will be covered in local vegetation. Through its thoughtful and seamless design, the eco-bridge follows the tradition of Korean gardens, which aim to merge themselves with nature. By acting as an extension of the mountain, the nearly four hundred feet bridge will create a new and necessary pathway for local wildlife.

Slope Walk

A Lush Green Bridge Built to Give Wildlife a Safe Path between Two Mountains. BY NEERJA KAPADIA

An upper slope for wildlife mirrors the mountain terrain, while a straight path provides access for humans

The design also includes built-in water collection and distribution for self-sustaining maintenance of the greenery. The steel structure also includes safety railings and will be placed at a height studied to optimize the distance between traffic and pollution. Providing panoramic views of the hill alongside the surrounding green landscape makes for a picturesque wonder while the one sided link gains more exposure to sunlight and reduces wind effects. To prioritize animal habitation and movement, the peaks of the connected mountains remain uninterrupted, creating zones of little to no human circulation.

The bridge’s structural slope helps maintain a privileging of the landscape’s elevation. By separating elevations based on the relationship between humans and the wildlife, Slopewalk forms a gently undulating structural core that offers simultaneous circulation and inhabitation, while creating a key piece of infrastructure.
