I

ndia is in the throes of a planning frenzy and several smart cities are on the anvil. The country’s property boom besides being hungry for sand, iron, cement and water is quickly obliterating any nuances that existed in traditional design to address a region’s climate, environment and culture. Fortunately, there is a breed of Indian architects who are going against the grain and espousing sustainability as a defining feature of their work. Choosing to turn their backs on green rating systems and sustainability certifications, these visionary architects look instead towards honouring timetested building techniques to create structures that interfere as little as possible with nature, both in design and materials used. One such architect is Biju Bhaskar, who builds to suit the local socioenvironmental contexts, embraces the use of reusable and renewable materials, harnesses traditional building wisdom and shows that eco-friendly does not mean shabby, dull and boring.

An eco-loving architect, he has contributed to the environment by using ancient art and traditional techniques of natural architecture to create homes with a soul. He has founded ‘Thannal – Hand Scuplted Homes’, along with his wife, Sindhu Bhaskar in 2011 and has created opportunity for many people to follow through with their desires in this field, whether it’s availing the advantages of it or contributing towards it. Thannal is a natural awareness building group, and as the name suggests, makes hand sculpted homes. He believes that using natural derivatives from plant and animals are very effective in construction. ‘ Thannal’, which literally translates to the word ‘shade’, aims to spread awareness about sustainable living with use of minimal resource consumption and creating such shelters by and for anyone who desires.

It also believes in a silent selfpractice in architecture and creates less noise by being vocal about sustainability but follows as well as leads others to a path of living in harmony with nature. Biju Bhaskar strives to maintain the continuity of the indigenous knowledge in Indian ‘vedic’ traditions. Anyone can join the natural building movement in India and create such living shelters at Thannal. Earlier, houses were made from mud and other locally found materials with zero cement usage and many villages to this date, live comfortably in that milieu. Mud is the key ingredient, and at Thannal, no material depleting hybridization is encouraged. In addition to mud, Thannal also uses various other unacquired materials like bamboo, surkhi (baked mud), lime and various admixtures from plant and animal derivatives.

Techniques favored are cob, wattle & daub, earth-bags with locally available soil and ear then plasters. Indigenous fading craftships in Lime like Thappi, Araish and Lohi from Rajasthan, have been revived to bring back contemporary house construction than remaining with forbidden Heritage Conservation Architecture. With each passing day, it proves to us that building natural homes are simple and economical if people work towards it as a unit. Sustainable buildings need to be economically viable also, but lately alternative building solutions given by architects demand premium investment which limits the society to a selected few. Mud was a poor man’s building material and Thannal works to return this material to everyone by learning from native and cost effective techniques. “We believe architecture can expand in more dimensions other than just concrete jungles but also in something which is more close to our body and soul,” they say. Thannal aims at a universal solution, applicable to both urban and rural contexts, with natural living being the crux. The Inside Track decided to have a little tête-à-tête with this awe inspiring practice which is penetrating itself all over India. Why do you feel natural buildings are the need of the hour today? continued from page 1 But if we look into the properties of mud after mixing with cement you will be horrified to find how a fertile, soft, porous material is changed into stiff, rigid and impermeable ‘cemented’ material, like any other in the industry. Mud has a ‘breathing quality’ when used in pure form or mixed with lime, which adjusts itself to the temperature outside.

We built our home two years back using a different technique with mud using earth-bags. Earth bag is a technique used by armed forces in making outposts comparatively fast and strong. It is also used in creating bunds and terraces to reduce soil erosion. This can also demonstrate to the locals a new technique, as cob and wattle & daub were already familiar to them. Earth is filled in jute bags and used as building blocks. It was done in forty-five days, involving six farmers and two shepherds. Natural materials like mud, lime, different plant and animal derivatives were used as admixtures. It is an example of top to bottom use of natural materials. continued on page 3

India has a very diverse history in indigenous natural building techniques, but today, very few organizations are practicing it in its pure form. So Thannal exists to create a platform where interested people can have opportunities to learn such different languages in natural building. In your experience, is the concept of hand-sculpted homes becoming popular among urban population? Yes, very much. It is popular among many urbanists who are looking forward to a reverse migration eventually from the cities to the villages. Many from Bangalore and Chennai, where low rise development is still happening, find natural building suitable for homes in cities itself. We truly believe wattle & daub, a technique of weaving walls and applying mud over it will be most suitable in urban scenarios. It uses less material and can deliver thin walls, which are supported by columns. More than 60% of our participants are from cities.

Due to the use of freely available mud and lime, which is the binding material, we do not require sand or cement in our constructions. Can you share a few methods how metropolitans can adapt to this form of building and living? We have built a project in Nelamangala Bangalore, where low-rise development is still seen. Many have started with their own owner’s build after attending our workshops. We are yet to do a multi-storey home but one of our workshop attendees have started with one. It is possible practically to have multiple storey homes with the wattle & daub technique. We have few architects who have worked in the field of sustainable architecture with masters like Laurie Baker, completely shifting into natural buildings. We believe growing more villages that are selfsufficient rather than overcrowding the cities increase the demand for resources. Yet we are happy to find our workshop participants happily trying to put some of these ideas in big cities like Bangalore and Chennai, and finding the difference of shifting into natural homes.

People can start small by using natural plasters on their surfaces or use mud as an in-fill material below floorings in buildings instead of cement. Thannal is not a construction group, but an awareness group which focuses on research and documentation and is steadily creating a platform that will help people learn about natural buildings. They only accept two projects a year, mainly in rural areas and also facilitate volunteering opportunities for the same.

Such an initiative can help in creating more workers as well as making people aware about beautiful techniques in natural building and bringing them back to the present scenario of house building. What is the time-frame to build these homes? What are the typical materials used and the average cost for the same? It usually takes about 2-5 months for a 500sq.ft home. The process is similar to farming so the actual procurement of materials as well as treatment in the correct way takes longer than the construction. We generally use five materials, namely mud, terracotta, lime, stone, plant and animal derivatives. An approximate cost we have derived is Rs. 800 - Rs. 1000 per sq.ft depending on the availability of materials. It is extremely affordable as compared to conventional building costs.

M

inimalism is the primary thought that shoots to mind when one looks at ‘The Contain Hotel’, located in Litoměřice, a picturesque town along the Elbe riverbank in the Czec Republic. From the quantity of the materials used to the number of guest that can stay, to the even more remote location and the measly four months it took from conception to birth, this hotel has been craftily built using minimal resources and is almost completely self-sufficient and environment-friendly. In today’s concrete dominated building industry, this hotel, which is exclusively built using discarded shipping containers, comes as a creative new approach to sustainable design. Designed as a prototype by Artikul Architects, nicknamed ‘Trainspotting hotel’ due to the proximity to the nearby railway tracks, an added quirk, it is constructed with one 40-foot long container stacked on top of two perpendicularly aligned 20-foot containers. They are connected only to a local power source and a built-in reservoir provides for the showers and sinks while the toilets are waterless.

Birch plywood has been used for the interiors and most of the furniture is custom made. An awning made from recycled wood helps keep the interior cool during the summer and also performs a dual act by keeping it warm during winter. Each of the shipping container functions autonomously and is fluid enough to accommodate local festivals and events, enabling continual relocation of the hotel which was Artikul Architects’ ploy to begin with! The Contain hotel comprises of five guest rooms and can sleep up to thirteen people. The lower floor features one four-bed guestroom, bathrooms, a warehouse and a utility room.

The terrace is the focal point of the hotel offering unobstructed views of the landscape beyond. There exists breed of architects who build to suit the socio-environmental contexts and embrace the use of reusable and renewable materials, harnessing a traditional building wisdom and showing that eco-friendly can also be aesthetically appealing and not shabby. he sits on her wooden workstation in the little alcove of her house facing the mountains, where she craftily devises ground-breaking house designs. It could be the aroma of the fresh lemongrass in the garden right outside her window, the subtle warmth brought in by the earth walls of her home or the playfulness of her dog and other animals in the vastness of nature right outside her house that fuel her brilliant mind resulting in her one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

Didi Contractor is an artist by profession but an architect at heart. Practicing the best form of sustainable architecture, she uses the earth and other naturally available materials on site to build mud houses. “I take the building from the site and then I become responsible for repairing it, “she says in an interview. Having great respect for the culture of any particular region and a love for nature, she feels that the most suitable materials are the ones taken from site, and the best form architectural style is the age-old regional practice or the traditional form of building.

Once you are in the vicinity of the cluster of mud marvels that she has structured into quaint little homes, a sudden sense of homeliness engulfs you. With a well-equipped kitchen filled with dainty pottery and a snug living space which gives away her love for reading, Didi Contractor’s abode is a reflection of her love for architecture through space making. Her residence in Sidhbari, a small village near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh reflects her vernacular architectural style and ideals.

The structures built by her house elements like niches and platforms are all made using mud, furniture that blends with the warmth of the interiors and details that bring out the distinct characteristic of the materials used. “I learnt about the poetics of space through set design and how to create backdrops that evoke mood. In school, I would doodle houses to fit my dreams,” she says. With her parents being artists, she had an artistic inclination since childhood, and was inspired by the idea that architecture was something you design, something you could feel, interact with and flow through.

After shifting to India in 1951, she lived in remote places like the outskirts of Nasik, where she fell in love with the traditional Indian architecture, the shrines and their earthiness. Bombay was where she finally got the opportunity of working on her first house in Juhu and the interiors for the Lake palace which was converted to Udaipur’s first luxury hotel. Inclined towards the culture of village life, she decided to settle in Andretta in Himachal Pradesh, an artist’s hub in the early 1970s, where she lived a rural life and learnt the local building traditions and techniques. She now lives and works in Sidhbari, a village near Dharamshala, in a community of 7 houses all built by her.

The most valuable things are those we cannot buy, like love and sunsets,” says Didi and tries to build a better relationship with nature through her works.

ustainability’ has become an increasingly used but generic term today. A lot of supposed ‘sustainable’ materials involve a hybridization that is more resource depleting than befriending nature. As hard as it is to be totally eco-friendly, some take the challenge upon themselves and with the right guidance and support, true gems are created. One such exotic gem is making waves in the deep inerts of Africa.

Situated off of the coast of Tanzania, lies ‘Chumbe Island Coral Park’, one of the last remaining pristine coral islands which became the first of its kind certified global ecosphere retreat. Chumbe strives for the highest standards in sustainability through the balance of conservation and commerce while fostering development and cultural stewardship, and has made a huge impact on environmental preservation in that region. The reserve includes a fully protected Coral Reef Sanctuary and Forest Reserve that harbours rare wildlife, a visitor and education centre, historical monuments and most fascinating of all, a fully-functional eco-lodge.

The lodge consists of seven e c o - b u n g a l ow s , p e r f e c t l y i n synchronization with the natural surroundings and enviously located between the beach and the forest. Each bungalow is equipped with a double or twin beds in the sleeping area under a palm thatched roof, a selfcontained bathroom, a large living room and handmade furniture. It is further accessorized with decorative native African artifacts, colourful fabrics and a hammock. As there is no ground water source in the rocky substrate of the island, each bungalow collects its own freshwater supply from rainwater during the rainy season.

This rainwater passes through a complex filtration system and is stored in spacious underground cisterns. The water is then handpumped through a solar-powered heating system into hot & coldwater containers for the shower and basins in the bathroom. The compost toilets decompose human waste quickly and reduce it to a nutrient rich dry matter that is re-used in plant beds. The aerobic composting process is powered by a ventilation system of small wind-wheels fitted on top of long ventilation pipes and ensures that it feels no different to using a regular toilet; except that composting toilets need no flush water at all, thus they effectively economize on water and prevent sewage from entering the reef where it would negatively affect the highly sensitive coral community.

Lights are powered by photovoltaic panels on the roof that provide ample environmentally friendly 12V energy for normal usage. The open design of the bungalows, with minimal barriers to the open air, allows for maximum through-draft for cooling; a form of natural air-conditioning. To enhance this, louvers are in place that can be lowered or closed depending on the desired temperature. All buildings and operations are based on eco-technology aiming at zero impact on the environment. The company objectives are noncommercial and the overall aim is to create a live example of an ecologically sustainable operation that promotes eco-tourism as well as comprehensive educational programs for local civilizations. One such iconic project is the ‘Lushan Primary School’ which has been masterplanned by ZHA in Jiangxi, China. The campus includes the school, dormitory and utility buildings within vaulted spaces that connect directly with their rural surroundings. The classrooms comprise of flexible learning arrangements and outdoor teaching areas. Composed as a network of barrel and parabolic vaults that open towards the river, the volumes stretch and intersect to accommodate the school’s varied program. These classrooms are orientated for the best natural light conditions in addition to frame the views of the surrounding landscape. A long central courtyard acts as the school’s main circulation space and play area.

Cantilevers protect the classrooms from the solar gain of Jiangxi’s sub-tropical climate and extend the teaching spaces into the landscape to provide a varied and interactive learning environment. The barrel and parabolic vaults act as the school’s primary structure and enclosure, with each vault performing as an individual structural element. To reduce construction time to a minimum, ZHA proposes to combine the local skills of insitu concrete construction with new advancements in hot-wire cut foam formwork that can be prepared on site by an industrial robot to create the barrel and parabolic shaped molds. This will also reduce the number of separate building elements required to be transported to the school’s remote location. The modularity of the vaults enables molds to be used multiple times, further accelerating the construction process and reducing costs. Zaha Hadid has always been an inspiration through her ground breaking designs and this project is no different. How & when did you start your Company? What kind of products do you offer? Earthly Creations is the brain child of Harpreet Ahluwalia, incepted in year 2000. Her vision was to create a unique paradigm shift in the way gardening and gifting is done across spectrum. She is an alumnus of ISB and Goldman Sachs. “It all started with being sensitive towards environment, specifically flora and fauna. The thought of doing something beyond me and myself created ‘Earthly Creations’, where in I could help local potters with contemporary designs, create awareness and love for nature by creating pots and garden decor in shapes of animals and birds In terracotta”, she says.

There are over 800 concepts which include animal and bird shaped pots, bird houses, garden pathways, water bodies and danglers where in each creation establishes a synergy between utility, aesthetics and value. ‘Creations’ are made in 5 states over pan India, with over 40 potters’ families - 50% woman potters who today are leading a meaningful and contributory existence, coupled with a sustainable and a scalable business model.

What are the steps you have taken towards sustainability and environmental advantages? Generating sustainable and scalable employment for local potters has always been the motto. Presently 40 potter families (majorly woman) have been adopted wherein all their basic needs of sustenance, education and evolution are being addressed comprehensively. The second generation has willingly adopted the pottery art and by using local resources at their place of stay, they mitigate the creation of newer slums in the cities. In certain cases we have witnessed reverse osmosis - going back to the villages by those who had moved to cities as labourers. What is in the pipeline for EC and what are your future plans?

Which Materials do you use for your products? Terracotta being synonymous with garden pots consequently is my preferred choice. EC’s endeavour was to revive the dying Indian traditional art by infusing in it a new lease of life and contemporizing designs that blend. Metal, wood and resin ranges have also been added for enhancing the customer experience.

We are currently working on increasing our range up to 3000 artefacts. By integrating various pottery art under one roof, we also aspire to showcase India’s art diversity to the world. Utilizing the naturally available materials while reflecting local traditions make the buildings made of this form, unique. It is slow but a steady rise in this industry and there are a few prolific people making a difference out there.

One such person, Mr. Dhruv Chandra Sud, the Principal architect at Spidergrass Collective, a design + build studio based in the Himalayan foothills, shares some thoughts on vernacular architecture and their practice with The Inside Track. What prompted you to get involved with vernacular architecture and move to the hilly areas of Himachal? After completing my undergrad studies from the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi, I was curious to broaden my understanding of materials & workmanship and had always been intrigued by the faint childhood memory of my ancestral home in Garli- paragpur village in Kangra.

Several chance encounters led me to ‘Maatisaar’, a small informal community of mud homes in Sidhbari village, established by the artist, philosopher and mystic, Didi Contractor. W i t h D i d i ’s a d v i c e a n d encouragement, I began to try my own hand at working with the earth-first as a gardener, and then tinkering about as an amateur builder. Eventually, in the course of a turbulent and somewhat reluctant mentorship, I was able to discover both purpose & passion in the process of vernacular building. Which materials do you think are best suited in your context? The best suited materials in our context are the ones that are used in the traditional architecture like mud, stone and bamboo typically.

Available materials + culture and tradition of a place give rise to construction techniques and detailing that are distinct to the spirit of a place. When designing in these contexts, the use of these techniques or adaptations of it, with the use of similar materials helps contribute to the existing spirit of the place. place. The dhajji dewari and the Kath Kuni styles are methods of construction that are very prominent in the Himalayan region.

Much of my work is located in rural settings, often on the edge of pristine natural settings like dense woodlands, beside gurgling mountain brooks, within orchards & tea estates, etc. so there is a very conscious effort to derive both the design & the building process in a manner that harmonizes with these spectacular settings. How do you visualize a future with vernacular architecture? On one hand it is apparent that the current direction of construction is going towards unsustainability while on the other vernacular strategies do not address our changed ways of living, issues of transport and accessibility, space constraints and speed of development. The future of vernacular architecture lies in finding an authentic representation relevant to contemporary times but that is still based on the traditional values and systems that we have inherited. rees are a great source of contribution towards the environment. They provide oxygen, improve air quality, facilitate climate amelioration, conserve water and support wildlife among innumerous other advantages. So imagine the conundrum za bor architects had to face when challenged with designing a holiday home for a large family amidst a thicket of ancient pine trees without even so much as a thought of touching a single one! The Russian culture strongly believes in the concept of ‘dachas’, which means families retreating to their summer homes during the unforgiving winters. This particular holiday home, simply named Gazebo set in Oblast, not far from Moscow, was designed keeping that tradition in mind. The Gazebo form has been influenced by keeping three requirements at hand; to create an airy, light and subtle structure, hide the space from the neighboring area and most vital of all, preservation of the ancient pine trees which have spawned complex outlines of the plan, and the use of satinated glass in large volumes.

The structure has large full height windows and openings providing outward views from every position from within. The openings, coupled with the white finish, pale wood floor and overhead lights, create a tranquil atmosphere. It is totally divided in two parts located at different levels emphasizing the change of relief on the site. In the upper part, located closer to the house, there is a large kitchen with a spacious all equipped counter and a dining area with a light table for 12 people. The lower level consists of a seating area with mobile upholstered furniture like armchair bags and puffees’ pointing in the direction of the garden and the forest, facilitating an appearance of openness.

Despite the apparent ease, the Gazebo has been designed for longterm usage. The foundation is pile, with a cast iron-concrete slab and a metal frame with a precast roof. The most difficult part of the project was using the decorative metal comprising of all complex junctions with glass and adding illumination along the perimeter. This was developed together with construction workers on-site. The walls of the gazebo are made of glass, and covered with matting film. Intricate geometric elements are made of painted metal sheet.

Tell us a little bit about Kala Drishti. Who is your founder? When did it start? Kala Drishti was founded in 2011 by mother-daughter duo, Anjali and Ritika Jain. The programs and initiatives are wide and varied, venturing into all realms of the artistic sphere, including advisory camps, residencies, art awareness programs, outreach programs, seminars, symposiums and art appreciation programs where buyers meet sellers and networking occurs on a larger scale. We are working to promote ancient art in India, art as a cause and art as a therapy. Conceived by artists themselves, KD realizes that for a self-sustaining industry that faces uniform growth by participating enthusiasts and artists, we need to start by creating an interest in such activates among all reaches of the society. We are also planning to open shops and outlets for them. What are the materials used by your artists for their art works? Many artists create their paintings using waste materials of all kinds to promote environmental friendly products. Materials can range from batteries to paper to pins to electronics. Just about anything can be converted to art.

What kind of customers are you targeting with your products and what is the overall response? We are getting and overall good response from the society, specifically from the high-end and the upper middle class and now our motive is to target the urban middle class as well as reach the remotest villages to create awareness all over the country. How do you shortlist your artists. Tell us a little about them.

Kala Drishti has been born out of the confluence of several ideas. Being a trust intended to benefit upcoming artists, all its activities will have their concerns as a prime focus. After having pledged utmost sincerity to the cause, we hope to contribute significant growth of the industry. erched at the edge of the desert, Dar Hi is an eco retreat located in the Tunisian town of Nefta. Amidst the Salt Lake, palm groves and natural hot springs, Dar Hi faces the south west which offers the best panoramic views of the Nefta basin. This project is the fruit of collaboration between designers Matali Crasset, Patrick Elouarghi and Philippe Chapelet with an aim to create a retreat in harmony with the natural site and the local life. Dar Hi is almost like a village within a village. What was first conceived to be a house within the village to be in the heart of the town with its energy and spirit by the designers, later drifted towards a sustainable development project. From the very first drawings of Dar Hi, Matali researched a way to combine contemporary materials with local artefacts. The designer worked with local craftsman taking into account their techniques and constraints. She observed their construction technique using beams and bricks that she used in the pill houses and for the walls she chose small clay bricks that are made in Nefta.

Troglodyte Room Based on the Matmata cave houses, these detached structures are designed around a central circular area with access to the bedroom, with its large double bed or two singles, the private bathroom with shower, and the patio. The rooms are a spacious 70 square meters and come with radio and iPod Docking Station.

Dune Room The three areas known as the Dunes, boast individual desert designs that include such elements as an indoor garden, a large terrace and views of the date grove. All of the rooms are fully-equipped and have 35 square meters of space.

Traditional House Dar Malika is a traditional Tunisian house in the local village, ideal for entertaining and with access to the hotel’s amenities. Ecology and sustainable development being the foundations of Dar Hi, the project is entirely built with traditional local materials with authentic décor that is almost refreshing to the senses. ampi Ya Kanzi is an award winning boutique eco lodge in the Chyulu hills of southern Kenya. Built in 1996 as a partnership with the Maasai of Kuku Group Ranch to promote environmental conservation and sustainable community development through ecotourism, the Maasai landowners benefit directly from tourism through employment and conservation fees. It is the only safari lodge on the Maasai-owned reserve spanning 28300 acres of pristine wilderness. It is a community project located on a private game ranch supporting the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. Eight luxury safari tents accommodate a maximum of sixteen guests at camp. Game drives are also conducted in Tsavo, Amboseli and Chyulu National Parks. Cultural interactions with the local Maasai community, including village visits as well as game walks are escorted by local trackers. Campi Ya Kanzi in Swahili means “Camp of the hidden treasure”. Located in Earnest Hemingway’s “Green Hills of Africa”, the guests can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the camp site, immerse themselves in traditional Kenyan holistic therapies offered in a bush spa as well as interact with the locals, birds and large mammals on guided game drives and walks around the camp. Until now, it is the only lodge in East Africa whose water needs are entirely covered by rain cropping, thus leaving zero carbon footprint! The camp’s electricity needs too are consciously generated by the sun, with zero environmental impact. Their photovoltaic panels transform sun light into electricity. Three interfaced inverters transform the continuous current alternately, at 220V and 415V. From the inverters, electricity runs through all their appliances, from lamps to fridges. State of the art technology was applied for the use of renewable resources. From special low energy dishwashers and washing machines to water meters that monitor every unit consumed, Campi Ya Kanzi knows no bounds when it comes to energy conservation. What is more admirable is how the camp has been built not by using outside contractors, but by employing local Maasai people post training them for the same. To add to this, only local materials were used and not a single tree was cut. Water being the scarcest resource in the dessert, the camp crops rainwater with a special water catchment system, of about 12,000 square meters (140,000 square ft.) and through our roof system (1,500 square meters, or 16,000 square ft.). Water is then stored in PVC tanks and bladders, whose combined capacity is 1,600,000 liters (about 400,000 gallons).
