If you thought smart devices and apps have not yet made it into the bathroom, think again! The Showertronics iV6, launched by the luxury brand Artize is a technosolution that reinvents the pleasures of bathing.
It’s technology that makes the difference in Showertronic iV6. It offers several key advantages over other systems - advantages that come from being an Intelligent Valve Sensor System.
At the heart of the Showertronics iV6 system is an electronic thermostatic mixing system that has 6 electronic valves, and multiple sensors. These valves and sensors are synced to a state-of-the-art intelligent control software that manages a set of unique showering operations.
There are no cartridges hence no small electric
While there is a lot of hightechnology that runs this system, what the user sees is just a sleek touchpad interface - a beautiful, simple to use and completely waterproof device. This touchpad is essentially his command centre from where he can direct his shower to perform in numerous ways making his daily showering routine so much more than just a mundane activity. Once installed the Artize Showertronic iV6 features an automatic startup that lets the system self-set itself after installation. This intuitively

The high-precision sensors check water flow rate and temperature every 50 milliseconds for instant control and cut off, if required Adding some more technological prowess is a settings memory that stores your favourite settings such as your preferred water outlet, flow rate and temperature. The system also ensures you always have a steady water flow that is regulated by the 6 intelligent valves, sensors and software that all work in tandem.

Artize’s Showertronic iV6 also comes with a pause feature that maintains and automatically finds the exact temperature and flow temperature is kept constant with no hot water shocks. The system has an automatic internal clean-up as well as a thermal disinfection feature that flushes hot water through all outlets for 5 minutes - at maximum temperature. Showertronic iV6 has been designed and built with a range of features and benefits that will soon be seen not as luxuries but as necessities by anyone who experiences them. Coupled with Artize’s Rainjoy extralarge, concealed overhead shower they together offer a spa-like experience that is quite extraordinary. Contact web: www.artize.com

he world economy is slowly recovering from a slowdown and the upheavals in the global market in recent years. While China’s economy has been slowing down, many smaller Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand are gaining prominence. India still has an edge over most countries due to fairly low production costs, but there is still much that needs to be done to boost India’s manufacturing sector. To this end the Indian government launched the Make in India program to attract companies to increase the production of high quality manufactured goods. Make in India aims at increasing the country’s GDP and tax revenues by manufacturing products that meet high quality standards and minimising the impact on the environment. Fostering innovation, protecting intellectual property, and enhancing skill development are the other aims of the program according to the Make in India website. Indian companies have grown tremendously in this sector. Some like the Jaquar Group, Cera, Kajaria Ceramics, Somany Tiles and HSIL Limited have multiple brands and are leaders in this segment. Parryware is one of India’s leading manufacturer of bathroom products, from EID Parry, one of the country’s oldest business entities. In 2006, it entered into a joint venture with Roca Corporación, Spain, and became a Roca Group subsidiary in 2008 and turned into a whollyowned subsidiary of the Roca Group in 2011. This year the company is planning to increase exports out of India as the cost of manufacturing in the country has become competitive. Currently exports account for around one to two per cent of the total sales, and it may go up to three or four per cent. Somany is another company that has greatly increased its exports. In

Earlier this year the company also completed the expansion of its Kassar plant in Haryana. It exports its products worldwide with a presence at some prominent international ceramics fairs. The company also has a strong presence in tier two and tier three cities in India. HSIL is known primarily for its sanitaryware brand Hindware. ndian handicrafts are known the world over for their superior quality, beauty and artistry. Despite this, Indian handicrafts tend to be stuck in the past, recreating traditional designs and motifs. Thus they are relegated to the status of tourist souvenirs. Yet many Indian designers, both up-and-comers, as well as established names, are turning to Indian handicrafts to create innovative and award-winning products. Here is a look at some of the companies and designers who are changing people’s perceptions of the crafts. Sangaru’s first collection, ‘Trussme’ is a range of bamboo furniture for which he won the Red Dot Design award - Best of the Best 2009. It also won the Grand Award and the Gold Award at Design for Asia, Hong Kong Design Centre, 2011. Through this collection he highlighted bamboo’s suitability as furniture material. Rhizome Rhizome is a sustainable design firm working out of Ahmedabad, founded by designer Rebecca Reubens. A large part of her work has been in the development sector, where she has worked with multi-governmental institutions, governments, NGOs, SMEs and communities in Europe, Asia and Africa. Bamboo and rattan are her core areas of expertise. Rhizome takes its cue from craft practice, and designs products that are made from local materials, do not require a capitalintensive infrastructure, and offer employment to local communities, including marginalized groups such as women. An example of their sustainable products is the Wishboo chair. This chair reinterprets Wegner’s iconic Wishbone chair in bamboo. The design strategy included staying true to the logic of the form; using bamboo’s properties as carefully as Wegner used wood’s properties and adjusting the aesthetics and scale to make it recognizable but not identical. The new range of electric, steam and microwave built-in ovens from the J-series come with advanced convention, steaming and warming features, respectively, that sufficiently meet the Indian standards of cooking and at the same time are ideal for experimental baking, grilling or roasting. What is the gap that Hafele aims to fill with this range? The built-in appliances space in India had players that existed at the super premium segment (high-end imported brands from Europe) of the market and those that existed at the entry level positions (local brands); there was no one really present in the middle providing a strong value proposition to the customers. The objective behind launching the Nagold range was to fill this gap and bring in a range that offers superior quality appliances but at affordable prices. It has taken us over a year to put together this range taking into consideration the specific needs of the Indian
customer and building in such configurations into our range that meet the uniqueness of what the Indian customer really wants. Until now, none of the European players that exist in the appliances segment in India have really customised their range to suit Indian requirements - they bring in appliances with European features which may or may not work for all the customers. What is the pricing strategy of the Nagold range? The Nagold range was introduced to fill the glaring gap that existed in the market between the superpremium and entry-level segments.

Pot has rediscovered the ingeniously structured web and wrapped it tightly around a completely different light. The new NR2 Medium is a bright bubble of fine, glossy fiberglass threads that form a symmetric, elongated network of clarity and lightness. The fibreglass threads are finer while the shape of the lamp is more elongated and symmetric, forming a harmonious bubble of glossy light. A LED lamp blends into the sphere, generating a broad light which radiates a warn atmosphere. Amami Sofa Lorenza Bozzoli’s Amami Sofa is an elegant, cosy seat with fringed, soft, light-hearted beauty. The generously sized sofa makes it ideal for both quiet relaxation and social gatherings. Ombre gradients pattern the fringe surrounding the collection of Amami seats. The collection also comes with a series of different-sized poufs and stools. Perch Light The Perch Light is a balancing sculptural light made of folded paper and brass. The lamp takes the form of an abstract bird which appears to be delicately balanced on its metal perch. The bird is illuminated through contact with the perch and this lets the bird balance and swing without any cables whilst maintaining luminance. The International Edge Builder’s Home believes that international brands selling in India have realised that good after sales service goes hand in hand with superior quality products. They are the authorized dealers of Grohe, TOTO, Duravit, Woven Gold (in bath); Bagno Styles, Somany, Graffiti, Johnson (in tiles), Jayna and Anupam (Kitchen Sinks), Sleek (Modular Kitchens), Pearl, Capstona and World Of Stone (in glass, natural stone, mosaics and murals). They also carry a wide range of stone basins, imported tiles and sanitary ware. The Inside Track spoke to Ruchita Jani, Business and Development Manager at Builder’s Home about the most popular brands and latest trends in the bath segment. There are many international sanitary ware companies that have entered the market. How are they performing? How are they competing with Indian brands? We are the ones who helped build these MNC brands. We have Japanese brands, German make brands. Grohe is one of the brands that we have and it is performing very, very well. We keep Grohe’s fittings and sanitary ware. They are very popular in the market right now. Today there is a concept of ‘complete bathroom solutions’ offered by brands. Are consumers opting for these concept bathrooms or are they still mixing and matching? The consumers demand sanitary ware

and sanitary fittings from the same brand. We have to convince them that this brand only keeps sanitary ware or fittings. They want to go to one brand for everything. If they like something, if something just strikes them, they will stick to the same product. Normally what happens is they select our product and they furnish all their bathrooms from the same company. Which companies are providing high quality, smart bath fittings? Is there a huge demand for such products? I think Grohe, TOTO and Duravit are absolutely fantastic. They have the best quality, best afterservice, they are technically sound and have innovative products. International brands are more aware that their sales, installation and after sale service, all these things work together. There has been an increase in the premium segment in the sanitary ware industry. Who according to you is the leader in this segment and which are some their best-selling products? In Grohe, their showers have better performance compared to the rest. Their showers are more popular, especially their F-15 shower. How do you rate the demand of bathroom furniture? Only Duravit is providing vanities,
otherwise no other companies are providing vanities and we don’t keep other brands. Not many customers opt for readymade vanities; nowadays people prefer making it themselves. What do you think could be the trends in this segment in the coming year? Do you see any new ideas product-wise? TOTO will definitely boom in the future. They will definitely grow. They have the best technical specifications in their products. Contact web: www.edgestudio.in email:info@edgestudio.in, buildershome@gmail.com tel: +91 79 30088880/30088882

ighteen year old Bisman Deu has added the title of budding inventor to her name. Deu, with her team partner Rayvin Thingnam have invented an environmentally friendly building material called ‘Green Wood’. Now Deu is the only young person on UNICEF’s ‘Wearables For Good’ judging panel. Deu and Thingnam (under the team name Youth Innovators from India) were the first place winners

Deu got the idea after seeing rice husk being burnt when visiting her family’s farm house
that challenges secondary school students to develop an innovative business concept that addresses a social need. Under the guidance and support of an HP e-mentor from Singapore, the team developed a revolutionary building material, made out of rice husk boards. The team will buy rice husk from farmers and create a building material, which they called “Green Wood”. “A trip to my farm house made me observe the burning of rice waste was causing air pollution, which inspired me to come up with an idea that solves this problem,” says Deu. The team’s invention could have far reaching impact on the
that uses rice husks and straw as raw materials. The main challenges were: help reduce deforestation; provide an extra source of income for farmers; and provide ecofriendly, low-cost housing for low-income people. To address these issues, Deu and Thingnam developed Green Wood - a substitute for wood, made from unwanted rice waste that can serve as a building material for low-cost housing. Green Wood creates affordable, waterproof particleboards that can be used in environmentally sustainable housing. This material is fungiand mold-proof, and therefore can

sustainable building. More than half of the world’s people eat rice as a staple food, and the crop dominates cereal production in many lowincome countries. In India, 47% of the population was employed in agriculture in 2012. The threshing of rice produces unwanted husks and straw, and the options for disposal are limited: burning, composting or feeding to animals on the farm. The residues have no commercial value, so the farmers end up burning the rice waste - causing air pollution, killing crop-friendly insects and making the topmost layer of soil partially infertile due to loss of nutrients. Breathing this polluted air is obviously extremely unhealthy for humans, and it can also severely impact animals. Deu wanted to address this problem by developing a product
withstand any kind of weather. It can also be used to make low-cost and sturdy school furniture. Gr e e n Wo o d c o u l d b e a revolutionary building material. It could help provide housing to the poor as well as improve rural livelihoods, by creating a market for rice waste, so farmers can make extra income. The product can furthermore greatly reduce air pollution as well as deforestation of the rainforest areas where many hardwood species grow; deforestation has been linked to climate change and has a devastating impact on biodiversity and the water cycle. Although Green Wood is not yet on the market - the team has made a prototype and are working on improving it. Companies have already shown a lot of interest in Deu’s invention.
