One of the hottest trends we are seeing for 2018 is built-in gray-toned appliances in a dark brushed metal finish. Stainless steel appliances have dominated the market for quite some time, so seeing a different finish come into play is not surprising. Builtin appliances include ovens, hobs and sinks in addition to fridges and storage cabinets. With their seamless aesthetics, space saving benefits and low maintenance traits, they are fast becoming a rage in Indian homes.

Today, you can have a kitchen with technology integrated into every function and appliance

Smart Kitchens We c a n’t a v o i d t e c h n o l o g y any longer. It has entered our workplaces, schools, bedrooms and now it is slowly slithering its way into our kitchens! Today, you can have a kitchen with technology integrated into every function and appliance–from the faucets to the fridge to the lighting and not just the gadgets and appliances. This is called a smart kitchen. Smart kitchens are an evolving aspect of design. In fact, a lot of kitchens today are built smart from the ground up. For older kitchens, sensors, smart gadgets and other devices can be added to for convenience to the homeowner.

Easy add-ons are motion senseequipped kitchen faucets that can sense the presence of hands underneath and will come on automatically. Refrigerators that can alert you when your groceries items are running low or a coffee maker programmed to have your coffee ready when you wake up. There is also a gadget that monitors your eggs, telling you which ones are almost going bad. Do not forget to update your lighting system–allowing you to control all the lights from your smartphone or tablet. Technology integrated kitchens are becoming more popular as homeowners experiment with novel technologies. This is one of the biggest trends going into 2018.

Accessible multi-user kitchens An inclusively designed kitchen is intended to offer independence to less able or wheelchair users, whilst at the same time being suitable for all other users in the household.

Accessible multi-user kitchens

Social Kitchen Space inside a house is one of the most dynamic ones; evolving constantly with the needs of the people. German brand Nolte which has been present in India for over a decade and has more than 20 stores across the country, recently launched a new trend called ‘The Social Kitchen’. The Social kitchen addresses the changing concept, look, feel and expectations from a kitchen. Over the years kitchens have come out from being a place where you cook food to where you spend time with your family, entertain guests and cook together with friends and family.

Social Kitchen by ‘Nolte’

With multigenerational living on the rise, the growing need to accommodate for different users, whether that’s ensuring enough space has been allocated to create a turning circle for a wheelchair, heights of work surfaces and workflow, has been noted as a key design requirement.Multi-user kitchens for those abled-bodied and less abled is an increasing wish for many homeowners with huge advances in moveable work surfaces, appliances and tables.

here’s another side to the serene, cherry blossomfilled nature scene in Tokyo and that’s the eclectic, sensoryoverload district of Akihabara, where creative collective BnA Studio has just opened an art-centric hotel with a vibe that matches the neon scenes from the streets. Following the opening of BnA Studio, the Akihabara location explores the Tokyo art scene and further more supports it by implementing a revenue share system that benefits the artists/designers that have played a role in designing the hotel. There are five livable art rooms, each designed by local Tokyo-based artists and designers. Each room comes with everything you might need for your stay; furnished kitchens, washer/dryer, high-end bathrooms, and Netflix (because why not?). Each time a room is booked, a portion of the revenue goes to the artists that designed the room as a way to create a system that promotes exposure and continual income for the artist.

The Responder room designed by ‘81 Bastards’ features a full 3 6 0 - d e g re e m u r a l t h a t p a y s homage to Japanese motifs (like dragons), street art, calligraphy strokes, and ‘ukiyo-e paintings’. The room is both abstract and traditional. The Hailer room, which is also designed by ‘81 Bastards’ and, as a complete departure from the first room, incorporate street art in a more demure way. The collective updated one of Japan’s most recognizable artworks by Sotatsu Tawaraya’s “Wind God and Thunder God” with street art elements and personal styles.

BnA Studio Akihabara room 401 Zen Garden by 51.3 G-WAVEx

The Zen Garden room produced by ‘ Taku Sato’ and 51.3 G Wave artists N, Kazuma Ogata and Mitsuko Shimae glows with purple hues as an exaggerated depiction of the juxtaposition of a “Zen Japan” in a modern metropolis city like Tokyo that’s bustling with chaotic energy. Traditional elements like low Japanese furniture and ‘karesansui’ (a rock garden) keep the room feeling authentic. BnA Studio also designed the minimal bathrooms as a brief intermission to all the artworks and neon lights. Last but not least, the Athletic Park room, produced by ‘studiobowl’ with designs by Ryohei Murakami, echoes the same childhood nostalgia with its jungle gym-like design. This concept of implementing a revenue share system that benefits the artists and designers is a very interesting and experimental concept of generating work for local artisans, simultaneously creating a custom made one of a kind room that can never be replicated and defies the banalities of standard hotel rooms. Works are set to open another BnA Hotel in early 2019 in preparation for the tourist influx brought on by the 2020 Olympics. Contact web: www.bna-akihabara.com

ith an exemplary approach to creating appliances that simplify our everyday lives, Mr. Gunjan Srivastava speaks to The Inside Track about his brand BSH, the products they offer and his vision for the future years to come. How did BSH start its operations? Tell us a little bit about your company.

Of Today And The Future

BSH ensures the smooth functioning of our daily lifestyle by providing updated and appealing kitchen appliances.

BSH Household Appliances stepped into the Indian market in the year 2010 in collaboration with Siemens. Back then, our major focus was on built-in appliances and washing machines. However, after closely studying the Indian market, we launched Bosch appliances across categories and targeted the mass premium market. With Bosch, we entered the Washing machine, Refrigerator and Dishwasher categories as well. The year 2014 represented our first milestone in India with the launch of a washing machine in the 7kg category. 2018 will be a year full of fervour for BSH as we will continue expanding and launch new products.

Mr. Gunjan Srivastava MD & CEO

What kind of products does BSH offer? What sets it apart from other kitchen products? We have our presence across categories with Bosch, Siemens and the recently launched Gaggenau brand. Our product offerings span across refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, wine coolers, coffee machines, hobs & hoods, etc. We particularly specialise in the built-in appliances category with Siemens & Gaggenau. Our ‘Voltage Check’ feature helps to keep the appliances stabilized in case of voltage fluctuations. Also, with the increasing concerns of global-warming, our products are designed to be energy efficient and water efficient which provides the perfect solution for a modern/smart/sustainable household along with an aesthetic appeal.

Siemens built in kitchen appliances

What are the latest innovations and/or product range introduced by BSH?

How does BSH combine aesthetics with functionality in its products?

With the recent launch of luxury brand - Gaggenau, BSH brought to India the best in class design and technology. It is an exclusive high-end luxury appliances brand that caters to the likes of culinary experts, top chefs and design enthusiasts. Its legacy of 333 years and as pioneers of several innovations in the kitchen appliances space has garnered them global recognition. We will also soon introduce Asian top loader washing machines. With approximately 30% of the market chunk, Bosch washing machines are the market leaders in the front loaders category.

BSH offers superior technology with best in class features alongside elite design which sets it apart from the competition in the market. “Consumer centricity” is at the core of the BSH-Strategy - a mindset and guiding principle for BSH. Our products show deep understanding of the customers’ pain points and therefore solve complex problems, without compromising on its aesthetic appeal. To compliment the functionality of the appliances as well as blend with its environment, BSH constantly innovates to design products.

The need to customise the design of each product as per the requirement of the market ensures a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics. What is the average Indian customer’s mind-set towards your products? India is changing fast and so are consumer’s lifestyles. The discerning individual wants to own a house of his/her own and maintain it for a longer period. The aspiring consumers invest in appliances that are highly durable as well as aesthetically appealing. This change in the mind-set of the socially evolving Indian has caused an uptrend towards premium goods. Where do you see the brand five years from now?

Gaggenau built in wine cooler & refrigerator

Even though our goals are aligned to our Vision 2025, in the next five years, we will expand our product portfolios, building efficient customer service and brand building initiatives. By 2020, we aim to increase our retail presence with about 3000 stores (with ATL). Currently, we have 80 stores (Bosch & Siemens) and aim to increase this number to about 150 brand stores. ocated in a suburban neighbourhood of Hanoi which has been witnessing rapid urbanization in the recent years, H & P Architects spearheaded this project as a rebellious response to this context. They had a different idea of how to build a townhouse and this project is a specimen of unique, creative thinking. With this cave-like townhouse, the architects have drawn inspiration from a natural world than the manmade plastic and steel world that prevails today. The structure exhibits sustainable architecture at its best with the use of bricks that have been a familiar local construction material and has been widely used in rural areas of Vietnam with a simple technique. Imitating mans’ first homethe cave; this townhouse is a combination of spaces that are interconnected to one another with random apertures that gradually drift from openness to closeness for privacy, per se, and vice versa. Essentially the firm bridges together a chain of spaces that play with natural light and the textures of the house. The overall structure is made up of, and enclosed by two layers of brick walls which join at an intersection with alternate ‘green’ arrangements of plants and vegetables and also functions as a filter. They eliminate the adverse aspects of the external environment such as excess sunlight, dust, noise, etc. and only bring in the desired amount of light, rain and wind into spaces. H & R Architects have also incorporated a terrace garden in this one of a kind townhouse.

The team at H & R Architects has defied the usual and expected ideals of construction with respect to this house, the result of which is not only refreshing but also makes one engage with the forgotten pleasures that nature and local resources can offer. This townhouse is somehow both exciting and comforting to the senses, and seamlessly breaks away from the monotony of its surroundings. From the shape of the house and materials used, to the use of spaces and light, one cannot help but be mesmerized by the whimsical play of textures in this unique structure. Contact web: www.hpa.vn

taly is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. High art and monuments are to be found everywhere around the country. Its great cities of art history, like Rome, Venice and Florence are world famous and have been attracting visitors for centuries. Besides its art treasures, Italy also features beautiful coasts, alpine lakes and mountains. No wonder it is often nicknamed the Bel Paese (beautiful country). From charming roads to ancient monuments of significance, Italy is truly a beautiful country. To add on to its long list of tourist attractions, Grotta Palazzese in the tiny town of Polignano a Mare in Bari might very well be one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world today. The Grotto Palazzese takes its name from the homonymous cave and the place that was once called “Grotta di Palazzo”.

The hotel is carved out of a natural ‘grotto’ or a cave, that opens onto the sweeping emerald green Adriatic, and perhaps is the best spot from which one experiences this end-of-the-world vista at one of the restaurant tables with their sumptuous food options. Perched perfectly at the edge of a cliff, the restaurant gives its guests one of the world’s most unique dining experiences. The restaurant is carved from the cliff ’s limestone and sits 74 feet above sea level, bequeathing the diners with dramatic views of the ocean just beneath them. The blue of the sea and the sky contrasts with the mysterious atmospheres of the natural cavities.

The colors of the day make the beauty of the coastal landscape shine, while those of the evening and at sunset, create unforgettable nuances in the charm and elegance of the restaurant lights. While the restaurant can easily be mistaken to being one among the newly established pit stops for people that love good food and aesthetics, the setting also provides a feast for the eyes of local nobility during grand banquets at the restaurant as far back as the 1700s. The Grotto Palazzese is open from May to September and is a must visit for anyone interested in viewing this innovative masterpiece made exotic with minimal frills. Neo Salon The recently launched range of Nolte kitchen called Neo Salon, offers a mirror finish on cabinets, instantly giving a facelift to the entire set up. This glam kitchen was designed keeping the international trend of using mirrors to enhance the look and space of a room. ith the rise in urbanism, the population in the cities is increasing. People come to cities in search of jobs and a better lifestyle. To provide a proper living space to them, the number of apartments getting constructed is increasing which in turn is reducing the size of each apartment making it difficult for people to live in cramped spaces. After a hard day’s work, home is where you want to sit back and relax and these urban space constraints should not hamper the coziness of said home. In this scenario, the role of an architect or designer is to propose designs which will not only be multifunctional but also planned to give the area a spacious and comfortable feel. A properly designed space with appropriate space planning helps in making a smaller space more usable. When it comes to metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, etc.,due to less space availability, people live in small homes and have to accommodate their furniture in restricted areas. Multifunctional furniture comes in handy in such cases. A few other ways in which small spaces can be made useful are by creating sleek designs by following simple grids to accommodate more furniture. The use of pastel colours instead of dark colours or heavy patterns also makes a space look less crowded. Minimalism is key and it also helps if one doesn’t hoard things and keeps the home well maintained and clean. Along similar lines, architect Brad Swartz with an approach to maximize the available area in a home has come up with spatial solutions that can be used in small spaces that emphasize on living well.

Live Life ‘Swartz’ Size Space planning - a necessity in metros to make small houses livable. BY AVANI PATWARDHAN After proving that ‘good design comes in small packages as well as large’ with the Darlinghurst Apartment, they received Best Apartment or Unit at the 2015 House Awards and have recently been named Emerging Interior Design Practice at the 2017 Australian Interior Design Awards. Working with architects like Kevin Lo has helped him get a grasp of the process interior architects follow while designing. The award for the Darlinghurst Apartment kicked off their practice in 2015. Stepping aside from the firm beliefs of architects that ‘form follows function’, their firm tries to create the feeling of a space through their designs. With currently just two architects in their studio; him and Emily Elliott, they plan on expanding slowly and focus on quality. Apartment systems being the most efficient nowadays are widely seen in cities like New York, Japan, Paris, etc. With his approach, he tries to change the perception of small spaces by showing people the value of being close to everything. Specializing in bespoke residential designs, each of their works responds uniquely to each site and client. Trying to use a calmer material palette, they try to reflect honesty through their interiors. After receiving a string of achievements for their innovative approach at small spaces, they continue to create inventive apartments. With his designs, he gives us an insight into his ideas that we can incorporate for better livability in small spaces. Contact email: brad@bradswartz.com.au web: www.bradswartz.com.au

onceptualized by world renowned experimental chef Albert Adrià, and spearheaded by Pritzker prize winners RCR Architects, Enigma is an extremely elusive and singular restaurant nestled amongst Adrià’s six other eateries in an unfashionable area of Barcelona. True to its name, it is an ambiguous concept where up to 28 people embark on a culinary journey of over 40 food items, passing through 7 stations including an aperitif bar and a teppanyaki grill. Gastronomically appealing, it draws an extensive cuisine influenced from Japan, Korea, Brazil and its country of origin, Spain, all at the same time giving the feel of clandestine unity because of its interiors. This 6000 square foot restaurant that only seats 28 people at a time, boasts of a 100 percent custom made interior of an experiential sci-fi production. Translucent barrel chairs and pedestal tables appear to have been chiseled from ice caves. Flooring and other surfaces in sintered stone have been treated with a watermark motif. Invisible to the eye, is the plaque for the restaurant’s first Michelin star.

The Unraveling Of Enigma A strange and highly secretive world of culinary

amusement that reinvents the way people go to restaurants. BY NEERJA KAPADIA

The overall effect is meant to feel dreamlike to visitors who pass through the labyrinth of rooms

RCR Architects developed the look for the restaurant to incorporate Adrià’s avant-garde offerings. The dining rooms are as whimsical as the restaurant itself with cloud-like ceilings made from wire mesh that changes color and translucent resin walls that look like waterfalls. Still, the colors in the rooms are silvery and relatively muted. The overall effect is meant to feel dreamlike to visitors who pass through the labyrinth of rooms.

A uniform look throughout, the restaurant has been conceived as an enveloping space that melts and disappears. Enigma, which was craftily conceived from a watercolor drawing and brought to life by using ‘neolith’, is a one-ofa-kind restaurant which has used 3.2 million euros and taken three years to be made - A must visit for any design fanatic with a gastronomic tickle. reaming of taking a tour across Wes Anderson’s extravagant and quirky sets? Renesa Architects have come up with a design for a restaurant that will give you the feel of walking through one of his structures. Based in Delhi, the Renesa is an award-winning firm leading in architectural and interior design creative consultancy in India. They aim to come up with unique forms of design and to create better experiences for the users. Feast India Co. or ‘The Pink Zebra’ as they call it is one such restaurant designed by them that proves an eclectic and fresh approach to design. The Feast India Co. is a food and beverage company based in Kanpur and so through their design, they have tried to show a glimpse of Cawnpore (Kanpur) that existed during the British rule. The building is essentially an adaptive reuse of one of the oldest buildings of Kanpur and thus it gives us an understanding of the evolution of new design through the old.

The design has been evolved by incorporating Wes Anderson’s design ideology and his eccentric design concepts. To give a surreal experience to the visitor, the aim to use symmetry and minimal colour palates gave rise to the pink zebra concept which is mainly just black and white zebra lines dipped in pink monotones. The striking yet restricted colour palate used, creates a distinctive style of interior design and attracts visitors across the country. The Pink Zebra with its captivating facade leaves an everlasting effect of a magical building on the passersby and thus helps in gaining attention. They claim their purpose of making the ‘The Pink Zebra’ was to create a contradictory form of design by combining the extravagance of old architecture with the new. Their main idea was to create a complex and hybrid design to give a rich experience and leave the visitor hanging in the middle of an artistic sea.
