very now and then, you come across something that is so simple that you wonder how you didn’t come across it earlier. I was sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary 2 when Perth-based business coach Leigh Farnell was working through his Es for Excellence for a group of Australian retailers from an adjacent industry very similar to the appliance game. Farnell clicked the slide for ‘Endless Business’ and he brought up the concept of the ‘Lifetime Value of a Customer’. The simple equation to calculate the Lifetime Value of a Customer measures the average dollar sale of that customer multiplied over a fi xed period of time – weekly, monthly, annually or longer. If a loyal customer visited your store for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas every year as well as a couple of replacement products in between they could be worth anywhere from $500 to $5,000 a year and one day could be worth from $15,000 to $50,000 for a full home renovation or re-build. I can hear the groans of disenfranchised franchisees who claim that these big pay days are ‘once in a lifetime purchases’ or that they take forever to close. And that is completely right – but where is this customer going to spend this money to increase the value and enjoyment of their home? The answer is they will spend the money at their preferred appliance store – probably the place where they know the owner’s name and possibly the name of a couple of sales staff because they have been ‘buying there

for years’ and possibly their family and friends have also bought from there. But while you’re waiting for this five-figure cash splash, why not earn the exact equivalent with incremental sales over the next 10 years from that same customer, and better still from their family and friends. The next customer that walks in the doors of your store could be worth tens of thousands of dollars either in one sale or hundreds of thousands of dollars from multiple sales and by not providing them with great service you are practically inviting them to spend the money over their lifetime at one of the three physical stores they generally have on their radars. Another way of looking it is this – anyone can be a customer of your store, but they only become a client when you have sold them for a second time. What precisely you have delivered that has resulted in the return purchase is the essence of what will build return purchasing behavior and loyalty. It is also worth asking yourself what is the lifetime value of the staff that are working within your business and whether they are aligned to delivering long term loyalty from your customers. In the age of Amazon-mania, retail is still detail and the small things still matter. It is time to get back to basics and deliver great service and be the best retailers you can be. Your clients and your customers will appreciate it.

Harvey Norman confirms head office restructure Harvey Norman has announced a reshuffle within its head office and proprietor teams with current General Manager – AV, Rob Nelson, confirmed as the new proprietor of the Castle Hill store in Sydney. In an exclusive interview with Appliance Retailer, Harvey Norman executive director, David Ackery, confirmed that Nelson would be moving to the Castle Hill store on 1 August 2017, which was triggered by a re-shuffle elsewhere in the business. “Our Cairns franchisee, Roger Flegg has decided to retire,” Ackery told Appliance Retailer. “Our current proprietor at Castle Hill, Brian Nicholson, who came to Australia after being a manager in our Irish business always had a dream to live in North Queensland, and with Roger retiring, Brian applied and was successful to take over his store. “This left a vacancy at Castle Hill in Sydney and Rob Nelson has been speaking to me for some time now about an opportunity if the right franchise became available. He too put his hand up and will be the new proprietor at the Castle Hill store. “We received a number of applications for Rob’s job and we have announced that Ajay Calpakam will

ACCC takes action against Thermomix The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against Thermomix Australia, alleging it contravened several provisions of the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) in relation to its appliances. The ACCC is seeking declarations, pecuniary penalties, injunctions, corrective publication orders, compliance program orders and costs. The first case management conference was held on July 21, 2017 before Justice Murphy in Melbourne. could only be obtained by signing agreements with non-disclosure terms and other terms that prevented them from making disparaging comments about Thermomix. The ACCC also alleges that it represented to other consumers that it would not provide refunds or replacements as a remedy at any time. As well, the ACCC alleges that it failed to notify the Commonwealth Minister within two days of becoming aware that a person had suffered a serious injury associated with the use, or foreseeable misuse, of a Thermomix appliance. This allegedly occurred in 14 instances because Thermomix failed to give notice of these serious injury incidents within the mandatory two-day notification period.
Dick Smith class action in court On behalf of Dick Smith shareholders, Bannister Law has commenced the legal process to a file a class action against the retailer in the Supreme Court of NSW. Bannister Law’s class action will be underwritten by Vannin Capital, an international litigation funder with dispute funding capital up to US$500 million (A$658 million). The claim filed alleges that Dick Smith contravened various provisions of the Corporations Act, including it continuous disclosure obligations. In essence, it is alleged that during 2015, Dick Smith made decisions about what stock to purchase based primarily on the rebates that could be obtained from suppliers rather than focusing on buying stock that customers actually wanted to buy. This led to an increase in bad stock which could not be sold and an increase in debt. In November 2015, the retailer was forced to make an impairment of $60 million of the bad stock. The shareholders allege that Dick Smith was aware of the problem of the accumulation of the bad stock

earlier in 2015 and that, in breach of its continuous disclosure obligations, it failed to advise the market of this fact. It is also alleged that the retailer accounted for the rebates it received in a way that was not in accordance with the Australian Accounting Standards, the effect was artificially to inflate profits reported in its consolidated financial statements published in 2015, in contravention of the Corporations Act. Shareholders claim that during 2015 the share price was inflated as a result of the contraventions of the Act and they have suffered loss and damage as a result.

PARLIAMENT PASSES GST LEGISLATION
The one-year delay to the application of GST for online overseas purchases under $1,000 has had a mixed response from industry associations. While generally happy with the long awaited legislation there was disappointment about the 12-month delay before overseas retailers can start collecting the tax. It is not ideal for struggling Australian retailers, but does allow the government more time to iron out the practical challenges involved in its implementation, National Retail Association (NRA), chief executive, Dominique Lamb said. “A 2017 implementation date would have gone a long way to helping Australian retailers level the playing field with their overseas counterparts,” she said.

The Oracle BY JAMES WELLS
Breville CEO, Jim Clayton with The Oracle espresso machine.
I
n one of his first interviews since becoming Breville CEO in 2015, Jim Clayton, describes some of the key changes he has brought to the organisation. Clayton joined Breville following roles with private equity companies and consultancies, most recently with Korean technology company, LG Electronics. So it was with a certain level of trepidation that he took on the role with the Australian-based publicallylisted appliance manufacturer. “I have been surprised to the upside. This company has a very strong and passionate team of people, which is generally not true – most people see their company as the place where they
8

just go to work. But this company has a real culture associated with it. The people are so passionate about what they do, which is really refreshing. “I use the word ‘surprised’ partly because of my private equity background. When we came in and took over a company, the team was in pretty bad shape by definition – the two years before you got there were generally tough years all by themselves and then the reaction from staff is… ‘oh great news – the private equity guys are here and the blood is going to flow, so it is not going to get any better any time soon’. “Breville has not been about coming in and fixing something that was broken. This is about taking
something that is already working and then figuring out how best to accelerate, which is much more exciting. “Instead of being downtrodden and frustrated, the team was ready to run. They were ready for somebody to just say ‘let’s go,’ which had me spending more time facilitating than directing.”
THE GO-TO-MARKET STRATEGY
One of the key components that Clayton has introduced to the company is a goto-market strategy. When Clayton arrived, he quickly observed a missing piece in the ability to service retailers. “Previously the go-to-market function at Breville started its job

sometime after the product was on shelf. Breville is now behaving like other global product-led and innovation-led companies that begin the marketing function about a year before it hits the shelf, because it has to. “We saw that with the Smoking Gun – before the product hit the market there was a 10 second video, a 30 second video, a 3 minute video, and recipes. This drove conversations at a regional level and amongst our retail partners that we had not experienced under the old model. So, we were caught by surprise with the reaction from our retailers in every market, which in some ways was a first world problem, but it still left our ops team chasing demand. “The Smoking Gun is an interesting test case of our new go-to-market because we already had an older version in market, which used our previous approach to market. The delta in retailer and end consumer support and reaction suggests that we are on the right track.
“The same thing occurred with the Creatista, which is a great product alongside 50 others from the Breville stable. But what made its sell-through distinctive was what we did from the beginning to help customers understand why it was a different Nespresso product and why we thought it would improve their experience. “Under the old Breville, we would release a product by simply putting it on the shelf. It would do its thing and some months down the track, depending on performance, we would incrementally develop market support,
such as in-store point of sale and videos to promote the product. “What I have been telling our retailer partners is that we are going to be very different from the Breville of the past as we transition from a culture of release to launch. In the new model, all market support will be ready to go at launch. “To be fair, we still have our training wheels on, but retailers will start to see us move at an accelerated pace and that is because we are now lining all of the pieces up in a straight line. This isn’t innovative – this is just the ante to play in this vertical. But it also means it changes how we partner with our retailers: how we line up with them, how we plan with them, and how we invest in them.” AR
Breville Nespresso Creatista coffee machines.
Solving the digital puzzle The next major platform Clayton is building within the Breville business involves investing in the various pieces of the digital content and story-telling elements that retailers now require within the rapid transformation to e-commerce particularly with the arrival of Amazon. “We are partnering with our retailers to make them more successful,” Clayton said. “It is not about Breville having a better website; it is about our retail partners having a better digital experience. This is a different type of relationship we are cultivating. Previously, we would just make a new product, take it to market, and put it on the shelf. Now, we are aligning the entire go-to-market, both physically and digitally, to help our retail partners drive sell-out. “In some markets like the UK, where 60% of small domestic appliances sell through digital channels, how things move through the digital
channel are not a nice to have thing – it is the ante to play.” “In Australia, as the consumer makes the digital transition, the challenge is going to hit at the retailer. So for us, it is important to show up and help articulate our story, as well as provide our partners with sufficient lead time to execute optimally. In effect, this is changing the relationship between the supplier and the retailer. Breville is not just another arm’s length supplier – we want to create a sustainable relationship where we are supporting our retailers with their sell-out at every level. This is the biggest transition we are driving with our partners. “If we execute well, we may ultimately see improvements in ranging. When our partner has an empty slot, they will know that Breville will be fully aligned with its go-to-market support to help drive the sell-out. And, as always, they will know the product is of the highest quality.”

Samsung Australia releases insights into Australian laundries
S
amsung Australia has released a recent study, titled Australians@HOME 2.01, into habits in the Australian home, including how we tackle washing and chores. The research is the follow-up to the company’s inaugural Australians@HOME study completed in 2015. Both studies explore the common habits and lifestyles around the home and how Australians think and feel about technology. The 2017 study revealed that Australians don’t mind washing clothes, but they dislike folding and ironing. Additionally, 37% of Australians feel that laundry is “never-ending” and 32% think it takes too long. “The pressures and demands of day-to-day life are constantly changing around us and can vary across households. It’s immensely important for Samsung to understand how our technology can support the evolving needs of the home, as well as select, calibrate and design product features for Australia,” said Jeremy Senior, Director 16

Dorsett Retail taking the Retravision brand to the next level
Dorsett Retail managing director, David Dorsett-Lynn. BY EMILY BENCIC
T
he Dorsett Retail Group has acquired a 22-year licence to exclusively franchise and promote the Retravision brand in Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. The Dorsett group will have a non-exclusive arrangement with the owner of the Retravision brand, Narta, in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, ACT and Tasmania. Dorsett Retail managing director, David Dorsett-Lynn, told Appliance Retailer that the opportunity to acquire the rights to franchise the brand in Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory provides numerous opportunities for existing and future retailers within the group. “Retravision is a national brand and we will be looking for opportunities in large regional centres as well as metropolitan areas where the brand can be applied,” he said. “We expect that in regional centres the Retravision brand would suit stores with a turnover of $5 million, while in metropolitan areas stores with a $15 million turnover are the kind of businesses we would like to have with a Retravision brand out the front.”
18
Appliance Retailer August 2017
Dorsett-Lynn confirmed there are currently 25 stores within the network, with the business turning over approximately $200 million over the last 12 months. Of these stores there are eight stores from the Dorsett Retail Group that represents just under half of the total turnover located at Bunbury, Midland, Cannington, Joondalup, Oconnor, Busselton, Rockingham and Margaret River. There are 22 stores in Western Australia, two stores in South Australia at Clare and Kadina and the Murray Oakley store in Darwin.
“This store is expected to be a solid contributor to group turnover and could quickly rise to be third largest store in the group,” Dorsett-Lynn said. “The opening of Midland gives us five power sites in the key retailing precincts of Perth – Joondalup, Osborne Park, Oconnor, Cannington and Midland. This means we will have optimum distribution for our marketing programs, which we will bed down over the next 12-18 months and then we will explore further incremental opportunities in secondary sites after this. “We have good geographical coverage in regional areas with Albany, Kalgoorlie, Busselton and Margaret River, but there are gaps in Geraldton and Broome at the moment. The Retravision Newman proprietor made the decision to retire and now the franchise has been taken up by Scott and Nick Pope who already own the home hardware in Newman. They have taken the adjoining store to be included in the new tenancy, increasing the store footprint to 470 metres squared. “There has been some change in the network recently, and this is mainly due to retirement of store owners. We believe with the successful history of the new owners this will be a very successful store located in a key mining town in WA’s northwest.
TWO NEW STORES OPEN IN WA
The all-new Retravision Midland and Retravision Newman stores in Western Australia are now open for business. The Midland store is a joint venture partnership with Paul Van Den Rydt. It measures 1500 metres squared in size and employs five staff members. Product offers from Siemens, Neff and Asko represent a strong cooking story, and the new IT section includes Apple. The store opening in July was supported by press, radio and TV advertising, in addition to a launch giveaway of gift cards over 30 days on one of Perth’s most popular stations, 94.5FM.

“South Australia and the Northern Territory are two areas that are potentially placed for growth as there are only two regional Retravision stores in those states,” he said.
REVAMPED ONLINE STRATEGY
Dorsett Retail has completely redesigned its website with the aim for online transactions to represent between 4 and 7 per cent of total sales. “We sell off our website every day, so it has to be an important window for our business. Once upon a time, the physical window at the front of the store – people would walk past and see the specials and then come in the following day and buy them. “What we have underestimated is that there are now 8 million windows to our business based on the number of smartphones now in the market. So the rule remains the same – if you are not dressing your window properly, the consumer can’t see your business and you are effectively eliminating your brand from that sector of the market,” Dorsett-Lynn said.
Retravision Joondalup, WA electric blankets and coffee machines display.
The website has also been optimised for mobile shopping, which is imperative for the future of the business. “If your pricing structure is wrong on your website or the product appears as though it is not available you are unlikely to become one of the places they will visit. So it is for this reason
“THE OPENING OF MIDLAND GIVES US FIVE POWER SITES IN THE KEY RETAILING PRECINCTS OF PERTH – JOONDALUP, OSBORNE PARK, OCONNOR, CANNINGTON AND MIDLAND.” that the website needs to be optimized so that the consumer can use our digital shop window effectively. “Five years ago, you couldn’t go to a manufacturer’s site and download all of the information you require to learn about a product. Some people even came into the store to pick up catalogues,” he said.
Dorsett Retail has also recently reintroduced door counters and compared this data with previous door-counter data. Although the number of people coming into the store is lower, the retailer has doubled its conversion rate, according to Dorsett-Lynn. “Based on the metric that they have only two stores generally on their shopping list, then if you have one of these customers leave, they are generally walking over to shop from your competitor. The concept that some of your customers are merely ‘looking’ is completely floored in the current retailing environment,” he said.
PRE-COMMITMENT KITCHEN
Dorsett Retail has introduced a precommitment kitchen in its Bunbury store with a chef in the kitchen two nights per week, who will only demonstrate one brand at a time. “This provides consumers with the opportunity to sit down, use the equipment and have someone explain the features to help complete their buying journey. “I suppose it is a bit like a car, you are probably going to be unwilling to purchase a new car without driving it. Like cars there is a lot of emotion involved in the purchasing process because cooking and eating are such pleasurable parts of life,” he explained.
DANNY GREEN CONTINUES AS BRAND AMBASSADOR

The retailer’s contract with Danny Green will continue beyond this year. “We have a good relationship with Danny and he is a strong WA brand. He is a beautiful human being and he suits our business. We may twist this as we see an opportunity to bring the gender balance into our marketing mix,” he said. AR www.applianceretailer.com.au

SAMSUNG BLENDS TV WITH ART
Samsung was host to a group of more than 150 guests, comprising media and Harvey Norman executives, to introduce its latest television innovation The Frame – a new way to experience visual art and TV content – within a gallery-like setting in Sydney’s CBD. Utilising ‘Art Mode’, rather than fading to black like most TVs, the panel becomes a work of art, displaying content from a range of custom-designed digital art pieces or the user’s own content. The Frame has a brightness sensor that allows the content being displayed on-screen to adjust to the natural levels of light that are in the room to closely resemble a piece of framed artwork. Furthermore, the Motion Sensor automatically turns the screen off to save power when the user leaves the room, and turns back on upon return. The Frame is outfitted with Samsung’s new Clear Cable Connection and No Gap Wall Mount, designed to hide unsightly cables or wires. Users can also connect The Frame to compatible devices with the One Remote Control, including set-top boxes, game consoles, and UHD Blu-ray players. 20

Sony presented its latest 4K HDR TV range at an exclusive event in Sydney. The new TVs boast a wider range of brightness and higher contrast thanks to the company’s unique image processor and display device technologies. Sony TV product specialist, Daniel Kennedy demonstrated the mid-range X8500E, the X9000E, a new unit for this year, which bridges the gap between the X9300E and the X8500E, and an upgrade to the X9300E from last year. Everything this year is HDR. With the X8000E and above, users receive various benefits, including Sony’s wide colour gamut technology, Triluminos Display and full aluminium iodised chassis, along with Android TV for movies, music, photos, games, search, apps and more. One of the cornerstones is design. The X9300E and X9400E have flush mounted glass panels which means the glass is bonded to the panel with no air gap in between for enhanced clarity. Sony’s cable management system is included throughout the range to prevent mess and clutter.

LG TWIN WASH MAKES DOING LAUNDRY MORE CONVENIENT
Almost half of Australian consumers (46%) do laundry two to four times each week, according to the 2017 LG annual household survey. With this in mind, LG has developed the Twin Wash washer dryer combo unit designed to cut down large every day loads. LG Electronics Australia national training manager, Steve Abbey, demonstrated the machine at the Sydney launch event. “This is basically like purchasing three machines, two washers and a dryer, and condensing them into one machine. One of the key benefits is a maximum drying load line on the machine so users know when they have loaded 9kg worth of washing into the drum,” he said. With the washer/dryer combo, users can do a normal cotton cycle followed by a dry cycle, and there is a new speed wash and dry program, which will wash and dry items in approximately 90 minutes.

FIVE MINUTES WITH… What is your outlook on the retail industry?
One constant thing about retail is change. We have been through the highs and lows of financial crisis outside of our control from the crippling interest rates of the late 80’s to the belt tightening of current increased living costs, mixed in with the excitement of new products from CD to Walkman, flat screen TV to French door refrigeration and small appliances that do just about anything. There is still a healthy future for retail but it must be done well. The supermarket attitude of big box retail at unsustainably low margins is what drives consumers to online options. Specialist retailers can overcome this by being competitive, innovative in store design, knowledgeable about products with excellent customer service.
Name: Roni Robertson Supplier: Breville Years in the industry: 12
What is your outlook on the appliance industry?
Change is definitely on the horizon with Amazon about to hit Australia and offer consumers more purchase options. Working in and understanding the online arena is more critical as consumers defer to their computers and smartphones as the first port of call when researching products. Having the right information that will engage consumers and help simplify their purchase decisions is vital. Developing an authentic and relevant relationship with the consumer is key for appliance brands spruiking their products, as well as bricks and mortar retailers who can set themselves apart by offering a personalised shopping experience.

What is your best piece of advice to other retailers?
Don’t compare yourself too much to your competition. Focus on your offer and ask yourself every day, what do I need to do better? Set your own goal then ask are we exceeding our own expectation and can we do even better again. Soon you will find your competitors chasing you.
How does your business remain ahead of the game?
We strive to offer our customers a complete solution and remove their stress. After all that’s what we are here to do.
What is the biggest challenge in your role?
As an independent retailer you can feel alone at times. There are less of us around and it is easy to feel less important to suppliers. In fact, I have even had suppliers who have not known
What is your best piece of advice to other suppliers?
Keep communication simple. At times brands can use over complicated, mystifying language to give a unique point of difference. In this time-poor, information overloaded world, retailers and consumers may become disengaged, frustrated and switch off altogether. Key messages need to be straightforward, easy to understand and relevant.
How does your company remain ahead of the game?

Home renovation programs also helped drive demand for new cooking appliances which are better integrated and have more premium features. “Built-in hobs and ovens are a popular choice in many Australian homes as they enable consumers to lay out a kitchen in a variety of ways and also add a premium feel when compared to many freestanding cookers,” he said.

Thermoseal and SmartSense are just two examples of the high level of sophistication Smeg has achieved in its built-in technology,” she said. “Design is another crucial element in consumer choice. Consumers’ approach to kitchen design is no longer a generic look for the next home-owner; they are now designing for themselves. The kitchen is the most significant investment in the home and owners want to create a sense of individuality with a design aesthetic that suits the style of their home, family and culinary
tastes. Smeg is the only brand that offers genuine design choice with its three unique collections: Linear, Classic and Victoria,” she added. Bosch product manager for cooking, Malte Seifert also noted that recreating restaurant-quality meals at home certainly plays a role in the uptake of premium cooking appliances. “Steam cooking is a strong consideration when purchasing ovens and combination ovens, with flexible and healthy cooking needs at the forefront of consumers’ minds. With the influence of cooking shows and a desire to experiment in the kitchen, it’s little wonder that steam ovens and combination steam ovens are gaining traction within the cooking category,” he said. With this in mind, built-in oven sales are on the increase for Bosch as features that boast convenience and flexibility become more affordable and can be coupled with matching compact appliances to accommodate cooking with different heating options. for Gaggenau as aesthetics become more important than ever in the kitchen. “We never invent for the sake of it. We conceive something new only if it makes sense, creating the best that something can be for the chef at home. We also do not allow technological possibilities to overrule our design principles. Appliances have to appeal to something more than logic and we need to infuse a product with something greater than a collection of features,” Gaggenau general manager, Robert Warner said. De’Longhi has experienced growth in the cooking category; most notably, built-in ovens as consumers look to appliances that seamlessly integrate into their kitchen. “The almost frameless black glass design of the 90cm oven, combined with the black gas on glass cooktop is a winner with consumers. The larger size of the appliances also allows for greater flexibility, from Sunday roasts to dinner parties,” category manager, Jessica Hull said. AR BUILT-IN appliance category, according to Eurolinx marketing manager, Daniel Bertuccio. “We feed off European and Italian trends coming through but we also pay great attention to what our retailers are telling us. They are the life blood of what we do as they speak directly to the end consumer and therefore, their feedback is paramount to a functional business relationship. We are extremely pleased with the retail support we are receiving. Nationally, we are tracking quite well but the stand out state would be NSW,” he said. Kleenmaid CEO Danny Hamilton believes built-in appliances not only need to look stunning, as a focal point of any kitchen, they also need to be practical and easy to use, whilst offering the latest technologies. “Our research suggests that simplicity of use is paramount for our customers as many fi nd that an array of features comes with an ever-increasing complexity in knowing how to use them,” he said.

Home Appliances sales director of retail, Mathew Vozzo said consumers are after streamlined appliances that can be coordinated, are highly featured and offer the ‘family’ look. “In response to being able to offer the whole range, a steam oven option has been added this year to the Euromaid Black Pearl collection and we have plans to expand the offering in larger capacity steam ovens in the future,” he said. “Furthermore, larger capacity ovens are still a key driver in the built-in oven market, not only in the 60cm offering but continued growth in the 90cm segment. Technology based products are consistently trending with pyrolytic ovens and induction cooktops still featuring high on the list, while steam cooking remains predominant,” he added. 26

Glem Gas managing director, David Gilmore echoed this view, noting that microwave, steam and convection functions, as well as matching pairs of ovens are growing in popularity. “Built-in gas hobs have new high efficiency burners and induction continues to increase as a percentage of the market,” he said. However, Gilmore also observed that an influx of Chinese manufacturers developing identical entry level built-in appliances to a number of suppliers are driving prices down with low cost ovens sold through hardware chains and supermarkets. “The well-known prestigious brands are in the best position to maintain profits and sales. For us, the brand values of Emilia Glem are a work in progress,” he said. Fisher & Paykel senior market product manager, Belinda Toner said one of the biggest trends this year is an increase in consumers wanting to tailor their cooktops to their own cooking needs and requirements, while also ensuring they effortlessly fit into the look and feel of their kitchen aesthetics. “From matching the knobs on a cooktop to the handle on an oven, to having a combination of gas and induction cooktops, the focus is on finding an appliance solution that is tailored to their needs. Glen Dimplex has recorded strong growth in the built-in category this year as consumers switch from freestanding appliances to built-in appliances, product and procurement manager, Douglas Yapp said. “We have also noticed that consumers are interested in buying complementary appliances such as warming drawers and steam appliances. Consumers are also opting for black models with stainless steel highlights, which we offer with our Belling Black range,” he said. “With the launch of the Belling Black series, our built-in sales are performing extremely well and we expect this to continue with the introduction of additional new models. The whole series offers a range of innovative features, while being offered at a really competitive price point,” he added.

The appeal of sleek lines, minimalistic focus and clean spaces all contribute to the growing interest in Scandinavian appliances. The EB 333 embodies the Gaggenau avant-garde design philosophy with a single piece of 3mm thick stainless steel used for the soft open and soft close 90cm wide door for a sleek and sophisticated façade. Other features include a revised cavity design that aligns EB 333 with Gaggenau 400 series and 200 series ovens. The new cavity also houses an updated lighting concept and new control modules with TFT touch display. Exclusively designed black rotary knobs are available to purchase as an alternative to stainless steel. The 2016 range of Italian manufactured built-in ovens and cooktops from De’Longhi introduced features designed to make cooking a more enjoyable experience. The slimline 90cm cooktop features a precision dual gas burner, with independently operated fi re crowns for cooking flexibility. The company’s new premium large-cavity 60cm models now come with an exclusive pizza, pastry and bread function. The function pre-heats the oven and the provided pizza stone to 280 degrees Celsius, which allows a perfect, restaurant quality pizza with crispy crust in less than six minutes. The ILVE 600SKMPI knob controlled built-in oven and ILVE 600SPYTCI touch control pyrolytic oven have been the best-performing ovens for Eurolinx. The new series of black built-in ovens are the culmination of two years of research and development in Italy, to launch an accessible oven range that has the technology and sophistication that embodies the brand. 32

“Choosing black appliances for the kitchen is a growing trend led by international stylists and interior designers and is now a must-have for Australia’s style conscious homeowners,” Daniel Bertuccio said. ILVE will release two new cooktops around September, with one being a gas/induction combination cooktop. Kleenmaid ceramic and induction cooktops feature ‘automatic cooking’, which when engaged, applies boosted power to the selected cooking zone for a period of time then reduces the power, avoiding the risk of over boiling. The company has also engineered an Eco residual heat function that continually monitors the internal temperature and remaining cooking time of the oven, turning off the heating elements and utilising the residual heat within the oven to complete the cooking, reducing energy consumption. Home Appliances is supporting consumer demand for larger capacity ovens with the Euromaid ETP12XL and the ET12XL 60cm ovens with 94 litre capacities and comprehensive feature sets including touch controls, telescopic runners and a large number of cooking functions. New Glem ovens and refreshed Emilia ovens arrived in July. The temperature control and heat distribution matches any electric oven with the moist cooking environment resulting in superior cooking outcomes. Glem Gas will promote the benefits of gas cooking to consumers not only in urban areas, but also regional zones, where the off grid benefits of a gas oven have great appeal. Fisher & Paykel is looking to strengthen its induction cooktop range by adding flexible zones to all premium cooktops. The Touch&Slide induction cooktops are available in five different models. The 90cm has five cook zones, the 75cm has four cook zones, and there are now two 60cm variants in either three or four zones plus a spacesaving 30cm cooktop offering two zones. SmartZones means consumers can use several small pots on the one zone, while the Bridging option creates a larger cooking surface for bigger pots and pans across two SmartZones.

Leighton Russell from Status Plus Queensland Asked to highlight the best-selling built-in appliances, Russell said, “Customers are requesting combi steam and pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens more frequently now”. Supplier promotions are defi nitely beneficial in helping close a sale, he also noted. “With the implementation of offers such as cashbacks and rebates or products via redemption directly through suppliers, it takes the pressure off retailers to offer the consumer ‘more’ at our own cost. In such a competitive market every little bit helps.”

able to have an oven with compact appliances such as microwaves, steam ovens and coffee machines all together in a cube or in a row at the same height. The large freestanding oven has historically been the dream oven, but now people are more adventurous and want to cook at different temperatures or with steam,” he said.
Price is always a deciding factor in the purchase decision, according to Russell. “Although consumers are interested in features and programs, they still always want to know they are getting their money’s worth; as well as wanting reputable brands that give them confidence that it will be backed up with great warranty and aftersales service.” And of course, he was asked the Amazon question: How do you expect the retail giant to impact the Australian appliance market? “I believe that people still enjoy the ‘touch and feel’ that only comes with a bricks-and-mortar store, especially when spending large sums of money. It may affect other online retailers, especially those that trade in small appliances, but I do believe in order for clients to make an educated decision they are best to listen to specialist retailers like us,” he said. here was a 2% rise in volume sales for freestanding cookers in 2016, according to Euromonitor, with the average price of a cooker at $881. “Built-in hobs remained the most popular option, when compared to freestanding cookers and were also typically a more expensive per unit,” senior research analyst, Hianyang Chan said. “While cookers are listed as freestanding units, this is somewhat misleading as most are designed to be built into a cabinet.” After slow sales over the past couple of years, this category looks
set for a revival with comments from suppliers for this feature indicating a “steady as it goes” outlook as dual fuel gains in popularity. Technology in freestanding cookers has always lagged slightly behind those of built-in ovens in terms of precise control according to Smeg, but that has changed following the launch of Smeg cookers featuring innovative Thermoseal technology. De’Longhi freestanding cooking sales are sitting steady compared to 2016, as the category remains a significant part of the overall cooking business. A new range launched last year has boosted sales and

increased average selling prices. The freestanding sector is also holding steady in 2017 for ILVE, as freestanding emerges into its own space as opposed to being just part of the ‘built-in’ kitchen. Sales are ahead of forecast and the market demand remains strong also for Glem Gas cookers and it is a similar story at Glen Dimplex with the category continuing to perform well coming into the new fi nancial year. Fisher & Paykel too is noticing a design shift from the traditional kitchen triangle of oven, fridge and sink, by placing appliances to suit individual needs. AR

t has been an exciting start to the year for Smeg following the launch of its collection of freestanding cookers with Thermoseal technology. This represents a ‘world-fi rst’ for the category, according to head of brand, Tamara Buchanan. This “perfectly controlled cooking environment” is featured in seven models across Classic Concert, Classic Symphony and Victoria design collections.
The colour story from ILVE is towards white and gloss black, a direction welcomed by Eurolinx marketing manager, Daniel Bertuccio. He said the most popular ILVE oven collections will now be available, custom-built in almost 2,000 colours, “creating a kitchen to really get the neighbours talking”. With ILVE’s new colour concept, customers can truly

Traditionally, freestanding ovens have adhered to a robust, stainless steel design that delivers a professional cooking experience. However, De’Longhi is seeing trends across all kitchen appliances, including homewares, to a more classic look, category manager Jessica Hull said. “The De’Longhi Vintage range provides all the elements to suit this trend with smooth, rounded edges and vivid colours,” she said. “It was designed to be a contemporary classic with elements of a 1950s cooker combined with modern technology and finishes.”

“Freestanding is a key category for Glem Gas and we do it well,” managing director, David Gilmore said. “Sales are ahead of forecast and market demand remains strong for our cookers. The Emilia and Glem models have been able to hit the right price points and we are seeing good growth in sales for most sizes. While our gas cookers continue to largely defi ne who we are as a company, the increasing sales of our dual fuel models show we are more than just about gas.” Keep it simple is the advice from Kleenmaid. “There are consumers looking for the latest trends and gadgetry but they are few and far between from those who want appliances that work and are simple to operate,” CEO Danny Hamilton said. “The key to success is selling what consumers want to buy. Getting that right for us has meant our sales are doing well and the outlook is that sales will continue to grow. The continuing trend for this category is driven by style and practical features and a price point under $2,000, according to Shriro senior product manager for kitchen appliances, Michael Sultana. “The larger cavity 135L oven has been central to the success of the Omega freestanding cookers range as most of the volume is coming from 90cm models.” Home Appliances has enjoyed consistent growth with price pointed, well featured products offered in each category, according to product manager, Darren Sharvell. “Freestanding cookers are a visual showpiece for any kitchen with their commercial look, offering versatility to those who like to cook and entertain.” Consumers want cookers that not only meet their lifestyle and cooking needs, but aesthetically match the rest of their kitchen appliance family, Fisher & Paykel senior

“Compared to 2016, the freestanding upright cooker category is still performing well for Falcon, and despite 2017 being slightly more challenging overall, Falcon is still achieving goals,” Andi-Co national sales manager, Joanne Edwards said. “The 100cm upright range cooker in the Professional+ FX series that features double multi-function ovens has resonated well with customers who understand the value in two larger separate ovens built into a single appliance.” She said recent upgrades to new G5 technology has dramatically reduced the electrical requirements for installing Falcon induction uprights. meg Thermoseal technology with Venturi atmospheric control and twin-fan dynamic airflow system has created a perfectly controlled cooking cavity that retains natural juices and nutrients and corner-to-corner even browning with no tray rotation required. compromising on technology, according to De’Longhi’s Jessica Hull. The Vintage cooker (DEFV908) comes in three colours: glossy black, ivory and race red. Hull said the iconic design and variety of colours creates a stunning showpiece in any kitchen and has been a success with consumers. The electric multi-function oven is a family-sized 130L capacity with rotisserie and temperature control. Telescopic shelf runners provide safety when checking or removing dishes. The cooktop comes with five burners, including a powerful centre dual burner – two flame rings combined to provide a faster and more flexible cooking experience with heavy duty cast iron supports. Flame failure safety cut-off shuts off gas flow if flame is extinguished. The hero product within the ILVE range is the teppanyaki cooker (PW90FMP) with strong sales performances also coming from exclusive retailer models, Daniel Bertuccio said. The flagship Quadra
FREESTANDING AR cooker (PSW120F13E) will be released in September in a new configuration that for the fi rst time incorporates a dedicated teppanyaki plate as well as an induction cooktop onto the one surface. This is in addition to four burners, giving the option of cooking on both induction and gas. The Majestic series features the same cooktop options as the ILVE Quadra range, with added features including a space saving storage drawer for kitchen essentials, a dual control wok burner and roast probe. The Nostaglie oven series, which channels a rustic style, is now available in a customisable colour range. All ILVE freestanding ovens include catalytic self-cleaning, a triple glazed glass door and cool touch athermic door handle. The Emilia and Glem broad spread of models from 53cm through to 122cm “allows us to touch all market segments for upright cookers with gas and electric options on all sizes,” said David Gilmore. “Our new cooker platform goes into production in 2018 and is an enormous investment

The wok is positioned on the left enabling the user to place a large pot on the wok and still have room to use the four gas burners. Omega will update its current models (OF914X and OF916X) later this year which will include flame failure on gas burners. Home Appliances markets several fuel type configurations, catering to most consumer demands with recent additions to the freestanding cooker portfolio and new stainless-steel models under various brands. The Euromaid branded models comprise a 90cm dual fuel, (EG90S; RRP: $1,699) and 54cm with gas oven, gas hob and separate electric grill. New 135L Venini 90cm and Baumatic 90cm dual fuel models have been well received in the retail and commercial markets, according to Darren Sharvell. “Our experience has shown that key features that appeal include a commercial style square hob, cast-iron trivets and triple glazed doors.” 48

Slower sales for freestanding appliances over the past few years has been driven mainly by demand for more minimalist kitchens, Elite Appliances managing director, Mark Banovich said. “Where we do sell these appliances is with more stylised brands like Falcon or ILVE Nostalgie, which lend to the ‘colonial’ style kitchen with the feature focus on high powered wok burners, teppanyaki plates etc.” He has also noticed a trend towards a more American style heavy cooker, “but we are also seeing ILVE and Smeg release custom colours”. Banovich said customers generally pair freestanding units with secondary in-built combi-steamer or combimicrowave. “There has been greater call for freestanding units with induction cooktops which is more relevant to us here in Tasmania with a predominantly electric market.” And how important is staff training and product knowledge? “We generally insist on product training out-of-hours so staff can focus on gaining the knowledge 52

they need. Another essential aspect of the Elite Appliances business is cooking demonstrations, “not just for immediate retail customers, but as a venue for industry networking and product launches”. For the inevitable question about how Amazon might affect his business, Banovich seemed unperturbed. “We are not overly worried about Amazon at this point. We feel our business is about more than price; it is about offering ‘above and beyond’ service and in-store experiences.” Online business is not creating any waves either. “However, in the secondhalf of the year we plan to have a select offering for Tasmanian clients only.” Appliance Retailer just had to ask how (or if) Tasmania differed from the mainland in any way when it comes to selling appliances? “We fi nd that unlike some of the bigger markets, ours is very focused on electric/ induction cooktops due to the way natural gas has been installed in the state, with many suburbs and regions across Tasmania still yet to be serviced. We also have a very ‘green’ demographic, so energy efficiency and products which follow that philosophy tend to do quite well.” AR

he latest data from GfK for the year ending April 2017, showed a decrease across all rangehood segments with declines of 4% in units and 1% in value, with one exception. Cartridge units managed double digit growth, up 14%, resulting in an increased market share from 26% to 30% in total value.
Volume sales of consumer appliances are expected to rise moderately, according to Euromonitor, with major appliances leading growth, driven by the housing market and replacement of older products. Unit prices in consumer appliances are expected to rise steadily as Australians look for appliances with premium features and more attractive designs.

Schweigen's core business starts with its Silent rangehoods in a vision statement to provide consumers with the complete kitchen solution comprising inspiring, innovative and intelligent appliances. “From a design perspective, the rangehood needs to do its job quietly as the kitchen is now the hub of the home, according to Schweigen brand ambassador and interior designer, Mal Corboy. The outlook is good for rangehoods with higher selling prices, greater levels of customer satisfaction and easily communicated benefits, according to Glem Gas, with rangehoods now one of the stronger categories in cooking. Rangehoods have historically been an add-on sale to a cooker or a cooktop and it was not uncommon for a customer to purchase a new cooker and not change their existing rangehood. For Eurolinx there has been a noticeable push towards concealed hoods, with the company doubling its ILVE offerings in this style as a result and slide-outs are also in demand. With open plan living on the rise, so too are consumer expectations with extraction capacity and energy efficiency the biggest driving forces behind the purchase decision, according to Bosch. Europe has official industry standards for rangehoods, which not only assess the air throughput performance, but also energy, lighting and grease fi lters efficiencies as well as noise levels. In the absence of comparable Australian standards it is difficult for consumers to draw meaningful and objective comparisons, and as Miele sees it, responsibility is with the retailer when advising brand and models that suits customer needs. Qasair holds a slightly different position as a local manufacturer offering specialised ventilation solutions with custom rangehoods and ducting, which is experiencing significant growth. AR

TRENDS
KEEP IT CONCEALED
C
urrent consumer trends vary, from concealed undermount rangehoods through to large ceiling cassette models that appeal to the more discerning home chef wanting to make a statement in their home. “At Schweigen we focus on design and innovation with features such as coloured black or white opaque glass fi nishes, touch sensitive controls, wide aspect LED lights and unique decorative lights that create a special ambience in the kitchen,” managing director, Anthony Fletcher said. “Having rangehoods integrated and not a feature are foremost, according to Mal Corboy. “This is where the Schweigen IN. Inart Ceiling Cassette and the KLS-9 Glass Undermount rangehoods are a great choice for me as a designer.” The problem for consumers when it comes to rangehoods has always been noise, and for retailers the low sell prices, Glem Gas managing director, David Gilmore said. “Apart from a few models, noise levels have been too loud for modern open plan home design.
David Gilmore – Glem Gas.
Schweigen managing director Anthony Fletcher with brand ambassador and interior designer, Mal Corboy.
Typically, the main benefit has been lighting the cooktop and the noisy fan was rarely used. In recent years models with off-board fan motors have solved the noise issue and we have seen increases in rangehoods as an individual purchase.” Smeg has noted a shift in consumer preferences over the past five years with concealed rangehoods now being the preferred option for both renovators and designers. “With open-plan kitchens being the most popular option, sightlines have become integral to the overall look and design of the space,” head of brand, Tamara Buchanan said. “The concealed rangehood, with its ‘invisible’ design, contributes to the open, uncluttered aesthetic so is highly desired in the kitchen/dining space.”
Tamara Buchanan – Smeg.
De’Longhi places undermounts and slide outs into the hero category with the option to be fully or partially concealed proving to be a winner with consumers. Category manager, Jessica Hull emphasised this adding that: “the minimalist look does not compromise on performance but allows users to integrate their rangehoods into their kitchen without impacting design”.

AR RANGEHOODS “As the hood market shifts, we need to shift with it,” Eurolinx marketing manager, Daniel Bertuccio said. “When it comes to ILVE hoods, we listen to our retailers and responses are almost unanimous which is good for us as it provides a more narrow direction that is more targeted with selling styles.” Bosch product manager for cooking, Malte Seifert believes a kitchen is not complete without an efficient rangehood to protect against condensation, grease and cooking odours. “Innovative technology and sophisticated design elements showcase how consumers can create an atmosphere that is comfortably free of cooking steam and disruptive noise.”
Daniel Bertuccio – Eurolinx.
The category is performing well also for Glen Dimplex following the introduction of new Belling models, and a repositioning of the range that offers a more competitive price, according to product and procurement manager, Douglas Yapp. “Minimalist design is a growing trend along with consumers wanting matching appliances and accessories.” Demand for rangehoods that are powerful and quiet, is the message from Kleenmaid CEO, Danny Hamilton. “Gone are the days where consumers accept rangehoods that are ineffective and noisy. It has become an essential kitchen appliance, purchased to do a job. Very few extravagantly styled, or gimmicky featured rangehoods are selling. It’s all about the capacity to do the job and the less it is seen, the better.” Miele rangehood sales in Australia are achieving solid growth in units and value, category marketing manager consumer technology, Rudi Niemoeller said, with all indications pointing to a consistently strong performance for the remainder of this year. 56
Appliance Retailer August 2017
“Increasingly, consumers recognise the importance of superior extraction and are prepared to trade up and invest in technologically advanced, well designed and well-made products. Another developing trend is the growing number of homes, where the rangehood motor is being installed externally, i.e. away from the kitchen. “Qasair works closely with the design community, architects and interior designers who come to us with concepts which we bring to realisation,” sales director Kate Scanlon said. “We are experiencing significant growth in the alfresco category, as more consumers move their cooking outdoors, as well as in our undermount category, with an increase in induction cooktop sales.” Concealed rangehoods are all the go at Shriro, with the continuing trend from consumers wanting to keep kitchen lines clean. ”Omega Appliances has seen strong sales from this trend especially with our undermount rangehood,” senior product manager – kitchen appliances, Michael Sultana said. He agreed that style and design are also key features with any rangehood, “especially if it’s going to be a centrepiece of your kitchen”. Customers want appliances that are aesthetically consistent, with edges and fi nishes that run seamlessly with other products, Fisher & Paykel senior product manager, Belinda Toner said. “Rangehoods above an island or that sit off a wall are very visible, which is why our sleek, stainless steel canopy and chimney rangehoods have been designed to suit contemporary kitchens and match the Fisher & Paykel kitchen appliance family with black reflective glass and stainless steel fi nishes.” An active renovations sector has produced a shift to more stylish rangehoods, according to Home Appliances product manager,
Rudi Niemoeller – Miele.
Darren Sharvell. He has also noticed growth in under-cupboard models which allows for cabinetry above the cooktop for a clean continuous flow without losing cupboard space. “While they have a higher price ticket, with high extraction and different design options, it makes

sense to increase the average selling price while selling a well-featured alternative product. “One development influencing the industry is that kitchens are increasingly becoming the focal point of people’s homes and lives,” Bora CEO, Willi Bruckbauer said, adding that as a result, consumers have even higher demands when it comes to planning and design. “They want freedom in their kitchens, tailored to their own living situation.” Asko continues to see growth in the rangehood category, particularly in concealed models which range in size from 52cm to 120cm, along with a growing trend to sleek, minimalist kitchen design. The opinion from marketing director, James Vogdanos was that this renewed design focus has increased interest in concealed rangehoods which do not appear obtrusive in the kitchen space. Other priorities include reduced noise levels, and for people committed to environmental concerns, better energy efficiency, with new European energy standards leading to better energy ratings for Asko models. Canopy rangehoods are becoming more popular, according to Whirlpool Oceania general manager marketing, Liam Bryers, due to the power these units provide and the range of space covered over the cooktop. “The design has evolved to become quite stylish and adds a modern touch to contemporary kitchens, so has had quite an impact on this category,” he said. AR
IS IT A RANGEHOOD, OR A LIGHT? IT’S BOTH. The Paradigma ceiling cassette rangehood copes with all manner of cooking extraction challenges. And it does it all with silent efficiency. It can be built into the ceiling or bulkhead over a kitchen island, or above a cooktop positioned in front of a window outlook. The silent, efficient and powerful Schweigen Isodrive® is mounted externally outside the home. The canopy extracts with precision by targetting airflow to the perimeter edges, making it perfect for heavy wok frying and grilling. This is a modular design, so you can install two, three, or four modules and control it all with a simple remote. The motor comes with a 10 Year Warranty. Now that’s smart cooking.

t recent Design Build and HIA Homeshows in Sydney and Melbourne, Schweigen featured its full line of silent rangehoods. Schweigen gathered thousands of leads via research surveys from visitors to the shows with feedback reinforcing the market need for the Classic Design Series rangehood line as well as the new Schweigen IN. kitchen collection, Anthony Fletcher said. “The response we received from the shows was strong, and it confirmed the direction of our newly expanded range of appliances. It underlines why Schweigen is the market leader in silent rangehoods,” he said.

The new Schweigen IN. designer undermount (KLS-9GLASSBLKS; RRP: $2,395 / S1 Isodrive external motor, RRP: $2,595 / ST Isodrive external motor, RRP: $2,995 / SP Isodrive external motor) features 15 minute automatic power off, LED strip illumination and Perimeter Aspiration technology that moves airflow to the external perimeter of the hood reducing energy use and noise as well as helping capture smoke, steam, grease and oil more effectively, with a wide range of extraction power options 650m³/hr, 900m³/hr, 1600m³/hr.) The rangehood is covered by a five-year warranty and the Isodrive external motor is covered by a 10-year warranty.
This year Glem Gas launched its Glem Off Board Quiet Air rangehoods and the market response has been terrific, managing director, David Gilmore said. “It solves an annoying trait of electric appliances, that is, excessive noise in the home,” adding that the Quiet Air creates the opportunity for add on sales, higher selling prices and improved margins. “Our on-board range will be upgraded with higher specifications and new designs for a more valuable sale later this year. The Quiet Air stainless steel slimline canopy with twin fan motor (GQA90SC; RRP: $1,299) sits in the ceiling cavity and is essentially silent. We supply everything except the duct tape and external vent. It’s all in one box making it a great cash and carry sale.” Smeg has maintained its comprehensive collection of rangehoods in varying styles, sizes and colours with more than 100 models. “Smeg has always strived to lead the way in new technology and innovative design,” Tamara Buchanan said. Last year the brand introduced a newgeneration concealed rangehood, the Diamond KDIAM90AX, described as a: “super powerful, remarkably lownoise model that set a new benchmark in both power and performance”. “This model has proved a perfect fit for current design trends and its rich list of benefits has been well received with four speed settings, including ‘intensive’ that removes a massive 1555m³/hr, and noise levels that are kept to a minimum at just 46dBA at its lowest setting.” The De’Longhi approach is to continue to launch new products with design aesthetics that match its built-in and freestanding cooking products. The latest ranges offer a selection of hoods from island, wall canopy and under-mount to slide-

At the same time designer features such as sliding touch controls and LED light add to the appeal of the range. The latest model to arrive is a canopy hood in stainless steel and black glass (DESELENE90; RRP: $1,199). ILVE has developed two new hoods this year. One is i-Hood with Bluetooth connectivity and built-in speakers. The other is Vapore, designed specifically for use with induction cooktops that eliminates build-up of moisture and water droplets created by induction cooktops. There are also two new outdoor BBQ hoods to meet the growing outdoor entertaining trend. “This year we are pushing our expanded concealed range of hoods as this is where we see the trends and growth areas,” Daniel Bertuccio said. The i-Hood (RRP $2,999) is packed with innovative technology, including an integrated microphone, a light indicator alert for the grease filter clean, a self-switching-off function, which allows users to program a delayed shutdown, maintaining the right level of air purity. Bosch has all operating modes covered when it comes to rangehoods, offering consumers canopy, fullyintegrated and slide-out models. Canopy models deliver a functional design element in the kitchen while slide-out and fully-integrated units
provide innovative features with the ability to seamlessly integrate into any kitchen design. “With the introduction of the EcoSilence Drive brushless motors in selected Bosch rangehoods, superior function is readily available,” Malte Seifert said. “The EcoSilence Drive brushless motor places Bosch rangehoods amongst some of the quietest and most energy efficient on the market.” The hero model is the Bosch Series 6, 90cm wall mounted stainless steel canopy (DWB091E51A; RRP: $1,949). Electrolux has added to its rangehood collection with two 90cm models. Both feature Hob2Hood technology that wirelessly connects the hood to a compatible hob, automatically adjusting to the cooking intensity. The AEG canopy hood (DBE6980HM; RRP: $1,999) also has LED lighting and an intensive extraction setting. The Electrolux wall mounted canopy (ERC930SA;
Whirlpool Rangehood AKR799IX. RRP: $1,449) pairs a corresponding cooktop to the rangehood using an infrared connection that instantly rids the kitchen of odours as the hood automatically adjusts to the cooking power. It arrives with a touch-onglass controls allowing for a seamless operation within the kitchen design and dishwasher safe stainless steel removable fi lters. The new Belling recirculating slideout (BSO60RFV; RRP: $179.95) will impact the category as it is perfect for homes where outside venting is a problem, such as apartments and Fisher & Paykel 90cm BuiltIn Rangehood HP90IDCHX2.

double storey houses, Douglas Yapp said. “It is a fi rst for us and a good option for consumers following this style.” Belling is also expanding its Richmond range of rangehoods to complement the Richmond black, cream and red cookers in addition to new curved glass models for a different style for giving central focus to the kitchen, all available through Harvey Norman. The Kleenmaid slimline, electronic touch control rangehood, RHSCK90 ($RRP: $1,699) is powerful and quiet with 12% more extraction capacity, now at 900m3/ hr and motors rated at 47dBA. This new hood is 16% quieter and carries another significant inclusion, the three ProTec micro stainless steel baffle fi lters which capture all grease laden vapours to protect the motor while reducing odours. Recent additions to the Miele range include Prestige Class with the unique Con@ctivity function which responds to compatible Miele cooktops, a feature being integrated
into more models. Discovery Class models come in at more accessible price points that Rudi Niemoeller said brings Miele “closer to a broader segment of the market”. To further improve efficiency, an increasing number of models will be changed over to LED lighting. Compared to typical halogen bulbs, the LED lighting in the latest Miele models uses 94% less energy, he said. The new 90cm Pearl (DA 6996; RRP: $4,999) has dimmable atmospheric lighting and a canopy pitch that allows plenty of room for those who are tall to peer easily into pots and pans. The Neil Perry 60cm and 90cm rangehoods from Shriro have baffle fi lters, an angled design so as not to get in the way of the user, along with a powerful motor. All these add up to important aspects when it came to developing rangehoods to complement Neil Perry appliances.

Qasair is about to release its Signature range, which will feature bespoke designs, manufactured from luxe materials such as brass, copper and highly polished, mirror-fi nish stainless steel, according to Kate Scanlon. Fisher & Paykel built-in integrated rangehoods act as a functional addition to the kitchen and remain out of view offering a seamless, clean look. The low noise level device reduces the sound level
Home Appliances UnderCupboard Rangehood UC75. features have added welcome interest to this category, Liam Bryers said. “Rangehoods that switch on or change fan speed automatically when odours or pollutants are detected in the air add value to the consumer experience. As consumers become aware of how much energy their appliances can consume, this knowledge plays a key role in the appliance they choose.” The (AKR799IX; RRP: $849) is exclusive to The Good Guys. The new collection from Bora is the Professional 2.0 range of cooktops comprising an extractor downdraft system for two cooktops and one extractor (RRP: from $10,999). This latest generation extractor hood system represents a fundamental change from what was previously a mechanical system to an Electrical Bora system. When the cooking zone is switched on, cover flaps open automatically. At the end of cooking it closes and is completely flush with no visible joint gaps. Greater energy efficiency for concealed models is the focus at Asko, with many models featuring a new and improved motor that operates at quieter levels irrespective of intensity of operation. The latest 120cm concealed model, (CC41227S; RRP: $1,599) delivers rapid fume removal, whisperquiet operation and a washable fan filter. The Gaggenau telescopic table ventilation, 400 series AL400121 (RRP: from $8,999) disappears completely into the worktop when not in use. Vapours and odours are extracted directly where they rise making it ideal for kitchen islands and open spaces. AR RETAIL RULES
Why buy online versus in-store? Sarah Laird from GfK discusses the advantages and disadvantages of online and instore shopping using the latest shopper behaviour data.
W
hen it comes to shopping, I have tried and tested most methods. I have shopped in-store, online, and used click and collect. I am a reformed shopaholic, now bargain-savvy working mum. And like most mums, my time to shop is limited. My need to shop varies a great deal, from the daily (yes, daily) grocery shop, baby gear, to bigger household items like appliances for my new home. Yet, with the need to become more time-efficient, and cost friendly, I still haven’t settled into one preferred method of shopping. According to GfK’s FutureBuy study, in Australia 24% of shoppers claimed to have purchased small appliances and major appliances online
in the last six months, with only 15% of shoppers claimed to have purchased packaged food and beverages online in the past six months. So it appears that a growing number of shoppers are turning to online for larger ticketed items, while grocery shopping largely remains loyal to bricks and mortar. So why is it, in our increasingly connected lifestyles, with our smartphones or tablets never far out of reach, that we still make a large proportion of our purchases in physical stores? (See Fig 1 for top reasons for shopping in a physical store and online). Shoppers still rely on the physical store as a means for seeing and feeling the product before they buy. In the case of shopping for appliances as an example, it’s partly to visualise the appearance of the product in-situ and how it will fit in the home environment. Further, 33% of shoppers considered getting the products sooner as a key reason for shopping instore, and 31% thought that routinely shopping in physical stores was the reason they chose to purchase there,

Fig 1: Top 5 reasons for buying in physical stores versus online for Consumer Electronics (CE), Small Domestic Appliances (SDA), and Major Domestic Appliances (MDA).
while 42% of shoppers considered instore displays to be an extremely/very important factor. When looking at reasons why people chose to shop online, the most important factor was saving money, at 56%. Consumers also considered shopping to be easier, 30%, and a better selection offered online at 27%. Online is an easily accessible platform to most – with some browsing on the train on the way to work, or shopping on the work laptop on their lunch break. Another 31% of shoppers like when a website keeps track of their visits and then recommends things to them, suggesting that more purchases could potentially be made off the back of the original trip. When considering what would get them to make more online purchases in the next year, 33% of shoppers said personalised offers based on shopping behaviour. When asked to think about reasons why they would not buy online, 35% of shoppers agreed that it was difficult to return items, and 43% said they would prefer to see the product in-person. But out in front, more than half, 51%, said that cost of delivery was a hindrance. It follows then that when asked what would encourage them to purchase more online in the next year, 71% agreed that free delivery would entice them, and 43% agreed same-day delivery would encourage them to purchase more online. An increasing number of online stores are now offering free – or free over a certain spend – delivery, and some offer same-day delivery (albeit for a premium price). I personally can’t see one method of shopping that fits all of my needs. There are going to be instances where I visit a physical store, and others where I don’t. So for now, physical stores don’t look like they are going anywhere – one size doesn’t fit all. AR
