round the turn of the millennium, a little known brand called Lucky Goldstar changed the way it went to market by undertaking a rebranding campaign that would be unprecedented in both the Australian appliance retailing and advertising industry. It may come as a surprise to know that LG’s now famous global tagline – Life’s Good – was dreamt up by a creative team within the Sydney office of the Singleton Ogilvy & Mather agency to help push the Korean brand into Australian homes. While LG was riding on the wave of marketing momentum across whitegoods, TV, audio and air conditioning, it also launched the first suite of ‘connected’ products using its infamous Internet Refrigerator as the centrepiece. While one internal estimate was that only two consumers actually purchased the $20,000 refrigerator that could take your photo, connect to the web as well as ‘talk to’ other appliances in the home, the public relations exposure and consumer interest in this product in early 2000 saw LG stalk, threaten and eventually capture the number one position in side-by-side refrigeration. This time LG is seeking to capture the premium end of the appliance industry that is a relatively unoccupied space among the major brands, which also delivers retailers eye-watering pricepoints and potential margin opportunities, as well as a premium consumer that ‘has to have the very best’. The InstaView Refrigerator (RRP $9,999) offers the unique ability to

knock on the door to illuminate the interior and a motion detection system that opens the door automatically. The Twin Wash Washing Machine (RRP $5,999) has two separate washing zones – a 16kg wash and 9kg dry upper front loading wash zone and a smaller 2.5kg top loading washing ‘drawer’ at the bottom of the machine. Both machines boast ‘old school’ manufacturing with stainless steel and enamel surfaces as well as the latest technological smarts including SMS alerts and the ability to track energy consumption. Complementing the whitegoods is the 65-inch wafer-thin Wallpaper OLED (RRP $13,499), but if you really want to impress the friends there is also a 77inch version available (RRP $39,999). Interestingly, LG is also implementing a ‘white glove’ service akin to Pro-Forma brands so that the consumer’s end-toend purchasing, delivery and installation experience is flawless. While some will see these products as another public relations stunt, there should be some applause for genuine innovation being delivered in these categories. These products move the needle towards higher average selling points and engaging premium consumers to retail stores where these exciting products have to be demonstrated rather than sold over the internet.

Home Consortium proposal for Penrith in Sydney's western suburbs
Redevelopment underway for former Masters stores Home Consortium is redeveloping the former Masters centres into a national retail portfolio comprising three different types of shopping centres based on differing local demographics, consumer demand, existing retail supply and regional planning considerations. There will be five centres opened in Q4 2017 in Rutherford – NSW, Penrith – NSW, South Morang – VIC, Tingalpa – QLD and North Lakes – QLD. A further five centres to be open before Christmas this year will be announced over the coming weeks. Retailers that may open within the centres include Bing Lee, JB Hi-Fi, Nick Scali and The Good Guys, among others. Home Consortium chairman, David Di Pilla, said, “Home Consortium is a best of brand retail proposition
that has been conceived and created in partnership with leading national retailers. The key focus is a convenient, value for money retail experience. “The leasing success and ongoing lease enquiries we have received reflect the fact that retailers have been able to work with us as a single developer/ landlord to plan and secure their store roll-out and growth strategies across a number of Australia’s key growth regions nationally. “Home Consortium has been encouraged by the enthusiastic and constructive response by local councils and state planning authorities to our redevelopment proposals. We are pleased with the progress we continue to make given the wide range of locations and planning authorities involved.”
After a detailed tender process of retail managers, Cushman & Wakefield has been appointed as the national retail centre managers. In addition, a leasing agent panel has been finalised which includes the following parties: National Agent – Colliers International, Large Format Retail (National) – QPA, WA – Vend Property and SA – Leedwell Property. By the time all centres are open and trading, it is expected that up to 8,000 retail jobs will have been created across Australia. Home Consortium is working with a panel of four construction firms on the first 10 centres that will open before Christmas this year. Significant job creation is also anticipated during the construction and repurposing phase of the sites over the next 18 months.
JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys merge commercial divisions In its full year 2017 financial results announcement, JB Hi-Fi confirmed that The Good Guys Commercial division, which was in the early stages of its development, has joined the broader JB Hi-Fi Solutions team. In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), JB Hi-Fi said, “Whilst there is further work to be completed, going to market as a combined group is an important achievement at this early stage. The JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys supply chain teams have been recently merged. “The Group’s combined scale provides our supply chain team with many opportunities to delight customers wherever they live across Australia and New Zealand. Imported whitegoods not meeting regulation standards Importing specialist and customs brokerage Platinum Freight Management is calling on whitegoods importers and retailers to be vigilant about sourcing pre-charged (gassed) whitegoods to ensure Australia’s regulation standards are maintained. The call comes after Platinum Freight recently identified an importation of refrigerators and air-conditioners, suspected of containing Ozone-depleting gasses (ODGs), slipping through Customs and Australian Border Force (ABF). Platinum Freight CEO, Peter McRae warns that not all whitegoods coming from overseas meet Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956, specifically Schedule 10. While overseas suppliers offer the goods for sale, it doesn’t mean they meet standards in Australia. The responsibility is on the Australian buyer or importer to source responsibly.
BY EMILY BENCIC
“Recently a potential client approached my brokerage to Customsclear a 20-foot shipping container packed with refrigerators, freezers and air-conditioners, despite concerns our brokerage raised that the goods were suspected of containing Ozonedepleting gases. “Operating on best-practice principles, I alerted the authorities. However, upon checking only a day later the shipment was released through the Australian Border Force. This is in insufficient time to complete an inspection. “These whitegoods are now in the Australian market somewhere, where importers, retailers or consumers will be purchasing them, unaware and uninformed,” he said. This issue will most likely affect smaller Australian retailers who buy in small quantities and who may go to new or lesser-known suppliers Platinum Freight Management team to chase better wholesale prices.
“We have a present-day situation where Australian importers may be unwittingly on-selling whitegoods that are not permitted and not as environmentally friendly as they claim to be,” McRae said. He highlights the lack of resources allocated to ABF and therefore the significant lack of systematic checks of imported goods by ABF due, citing this as a key reason why it is so common for prohibited goods to be available for resale by Australian retailers.

However, there is a down side to sunny days and warm evenings, as they can make keeping your food as fresh as you’d like quite the challenge, resulting in undesirable food wastage – an issue that costs Australians on average $1,200 per year1. Fortunately, this is where Samsung’s innovative refrigerator technology and design can come to the rescue. Twin Cooling Plus technology features separate cooling systems in the fridge and freezer, designed to ensure that each compartment’s temperature control is independent of the other, and maintaining high humidity levels to help 14

When entertaining guests, not only do you want your refrigerator keeping your food fresh, you want it to look sleek and stylish, too. In fact, having a stylish kitchen with appliances to match is so important to Australians that 39 per cent would make it their fi rst room of choice for renovation, beating the bathroom, living room, master bedroom, and dining room. 2 Samsung’s fridge range offers modern design features such as counter depth design that ensures a clean appearance, beautiful flat doors for that elegant look, and a range of stunning fi nishes, the most striking of which is black layered steel, a new trend that

IFA 2017 Part 1:
Pick of the crop BY EMILY BENCIC
Major suppliers showcased the latest and greatest of their product ranges at this year’s IFA, the leading trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, held in Berlin in early September. Emily Bencic attended the Fair and reports on the key innovations. Watch this space as there will be more to come in our November edition. BOSCH UNLIMITED CORDLESS VACUUM
Bosch has addressed a major pain point with cordless vacuum cleaners – battery runtime – with its latest vacuum cleaner, Unlimited, due to launch in the Australian market in 2018. When used at normal power level with a floor nozzle, the new cordless vacuum cleaner has sufficient battery life for a quick clean of an apartment or car. Using Bosch’s battery system, already tried and tested in the company’s tools and garden appliances, the 18-V Power for ALL system. This means that if the vacuum cleaner’s battery is empty, the second battery (supplied with the Premium version) or the battery from another Bosch appliance can be quickly and simply inserted. The separate rapid charging station recharges the replaceable battery almost as fast as the battery life is consumed during vacuuming. Furthermore, the Unlimited vacuum offers a lightweight, compact body and dynamic shape ideal for vacuuming under the table, in the car or between sofa cushions. The long, flexible nozzle can be attached to the hose to clean high ceilings and inaccessible corners. It is also equipped with a rapid-rotation DigitalSpin motor and practical floor nozzle for thorough floor cleaning.
ECOVACS DEEBOT ROBOTIC VACUUM
A global leader in the robotic vacuum market, Ecovacs Robotics has unveiled its latest range at IFA 2017, including the Deebot Ozmo 610 and Deebot Ozmo 930, which are expected to be launched in the Australian market in the coming weeks with pricing and availability to be confirmed. Whether the floor surface is parquet, laminate or tiled, the Deebot Ozmo 610 and Deebot Ozmo 930 are equipped with Ozmo technology, designed to sweep and mop entire floor surfaces in one easy to manage step. This is made possible by an extra-large, electronically controlled water tank that moistens a washable cloth during the cleaning process. Depending on the degree of cleaning required, the amount of water dispensed can be adjusted manually via an easy to use Ecovacs Robotics app. The Deebot Ozmo 930 manages to go one step further as it recognises different floor coverings and automatically adjusts cleaning modes to suite these. Carpeted floors, for example, receive a burst of extra suction power to help remove even more dirt and dust than previous models. Other features such as Intelligent Surface Technology help to protect carpets and rugs by avoiding these areas during the mopping process. 16

HISENSE TV SERIES
Hisense Australia head of marketing, Andre Iannuzzi with the FIFA World Cup mascot
Hisense showcased its latest Series 8 and Series 9 ULED TVs, as well as up and coming TV innovations. Hisense Australia head of marketing, Andre Iannuzzi said, “IFA allows us to show what is currently available to the market and we have been receiving a huge amount of support from our retail partners with these TVs.” The Series 6 TVs were also on display with 4K and UHD technology. “We are also excited about Laser TV with short throw projection and I believe we have the only short throw projector with 4K technology. It has a very long life span of up to 100,000 hours and this product is currently under consideration for the Australian market,” he said. “We are working on the evolution of our top-of-the line Series 9 product. Currently, our Series 9 TVs offer 2,200 nits of brightness – the brightest LED/LCD TV in Australia. We will be changing the conversation, because as a manufacturer of LED/LCD TVs, maintaining, growing and maturing the evolution of technology is important. The best way for us to do that is to increase the amount of zones that are in the TV. So what we are doing is closing the gap on OLED TV as a core technology. The key product for us is the Series 9 with 240 zones but next year, we will be introducing a product with 1,000 zones, which has never been done before. It is totally unique to Hisense. More details will be made available next year,” he explained.
LG TRUESTEAM DISHWASHER
LG Electronics is setting new standards for dishwashers with its newest SteamClean dishwasher equipped with the company’s one-of-a-kind TrueSteam technology. TrueSteam emits high temperature steam to clean everything from delicate stemware to steel pots and pans. A Pre-Steam option gently removes caked layers of food residue, eliminating the need to scrub items by hand before placing them in the dishwasher. By spraying the contents with steam at the end of a cycle, the dishwasher reduces undesirable water spots. Another core technology the dishwasher comes equipped with is QuadWash, a feature that raises the bar on dishwashing by using four spray arms instead of the two featured in most washers. Its multi-motion arms sweep and rotate back and forth while spinning in both directions. The dishwasher is powered by the Inverter Direct Drive Motor, which increases energy efficiency and helps reduce noise. The motor also allows for the adjustment of water intensity to provide soft settings for fragile dishware in the upper rack and a stronger setting for pots and pans on the lower level. www.applianceretailer.com.au

MIELE DIALOG OVEN
The Miele Dialog oven uses electromagnetic waves that intelligently respond to the texture of food, allowing users to cook different food, such as salmon and puff pastry, simply, fast and in only one single operation. The foods will fi nish cooking at exactly the same time and up to 70% faster than conventional cooking methods. The oven will be launched in Germany and Austria in April 2018 and at a later date in Australia. Speaking to Appliance Retailer, Miele executive director, Dr Reinhard Zinkann said, “Our Dialog oven revolutionises cooking. It is a result of six years of ground-breaking research of technology and is an enormous step forward. We are very glad to have it now. I think it will change a lot in the kitchen but it will take time. We started a journey today and that journey will be a long one.” M Chef technology from Miele applies electromagnetic waves to the food which creates heat for cooking. The Dialog oven features a modular unit which generates electromagnetic waves in a specific frequency range and distributes these in the oven via two antennas. As the molecules in food are arranged in different ways and even rearrange during the course of cooking, continuous adjustment of the frequency supports the cooking process. The same antennas also provide the Dialog oven with feedback on the amount of energy which has been absorbed by food.

PANASONIC GOOGLE SPEAKER
Panasonic will release one of the world’s first Hi-Fi speakers with Google Assistant built in, in the first half of 2018 into the Australian market. The SC-GA10 speakers will incorporate all of Google Assistant’s voice assisted operations and support all of the major music streaming apps including Spotify, Google Play Music, and Tune-in radio. By a simple voice command, the SC-GA10 can via Google Assistant stream music, answer questions about the weather and even control other compatible smart devices. Google Assistant’s multi-room audio function means users can further combine it with Chromecast Audio or Chromecast integrated speakers to sync and control music playback through multiple speakers. At the front of the speakers, the two 20mm Soft Dome Tweeters have been specifically designed with a silk diaphragm for its diffuser, opening at a 45 degree angle. This gives a full 180 degree range to the high-frequency directional sounds to create a wide, smooth and expansive sound effect. To ensure crisp, clear vocals of Google Assistant, an 8cm woofer with a dual voice coil is placed to suppress any acoustic impedance, rising between the medium- to high-frequency audio range. The bass sounds are further enriched by a Long Port Back Bass Reflex System. Additionally the Meshed Diaphragm with a Wide Role Rubber Edge design efficiently reduces distortion in the low-frequency sound range. 18

KNUDSEN’S BETTA HOME LIVING CELEBRATES 25 YEARS BY EMILY BENCIC
Knudsen’s Betta Home Living is celebrating 25 years of trading from its flagship store in Virginia, Brisbane. Appliance Retailer sat down with owner, Torben Knudsen, to discuss the transition from Retravision to the BSR group, the Knudsen heritage, its two other Brisbane stores in Cannon Hill and Redcliffe, as well as what’s to come in the future. RETRAVISION TO BSR
P
rior to the change of Retravision Northern, following the passing of Dave Knudsen in 2010, Knudsen’s made the decision to move to BSR. “We have

been a member of the Betta group since 2012. We rebranded our Virginia store in April that year. At that stage, we had our Keperra store, which we later closed and consolidated our business back to Virginia until the market stabilised,” Knudsen’s Betta Home Living owner,
Torben Knudsen said. “We used the consolidation time to reinvigorate and re-structure our costing and business plan to prepare for the future.” “During our transition to the BSR group we came to understand the method of business was very similar to Retravision in terms of the mentality and ideals of the group and the store owners, making the conversion relaxed. I often remembered and relied on Dave’s business intuition and recalled him predicting ‘one day we should become one’. Even at the height of Retravision’s success, he could see the benefits of the two groups merging, so when the time came to make the decision without him, it felt easy and right. “Although the Virginia store has undergone many changes, it remains our flagship store and we are very proud of its evolution. During the month of October, we will have a 25 year birthday anniversary sale,” he said.
THE KNUDSEN NAME
In 2015, Knudsen’s Betta Home Living in Redcliffe was opened – the first expansion since joining the BSR group. “As Retravision we had stores at Deception Bay and Burpengary for many years and our name was known in the area. Although we were under a different brand, we were known by the Knudsen name and the community welcomed us as Betta Home Living,” Knudsen said. “Cannon Hill was a different story. It was a new area for us, so our advertising focus was the establishment of the Betta Home Living brand name.” Torben Knudsen started his career in retail at Errol Stewarts as a storeman at the Cannon Hill store and was later given a salesman career opportunity, before moving to Chandlers. “When my father, Dave Knudsen, decided to join the Retravision group, he approached me and we started the venture together. When I go to our store in Cannon Hill, I am lost in memories as I am back to where it began. We are in the same complex as the original Errol Stewarts store,” he said.
WHAT’S CHANGED IN 25 YEARS?
While store size may have changed from large format to smaller footprints, the focus continues to be the customer and the provision of exceptional and stand out service, according to Knudsen. “Customers want to be looked after as individuals and treated well and businesses want to generate a strong and loyal customer base,” he said. “The biggest change has been the increase of the internet transactions. Five years ago, a constant stream of customers would be visible, measuring products and seeking information to assist them with their decision making and finally returning to make the purchase. Today, when the customers come into store, they already know what they want to buy and have already sourced the information they need so when they visit, it is to see the product in the flesh. “While the volume of foot traffic has reduced, phone calls, email interactions and online sales have all increased. This is where a lot of the selling is now done. The person answering the phone or responding to the email is as vital to our business as the staff on our floor. The process must be done well and comprehensively to guarantee the sale. “It used to be all about low margin
Knudsen’s Betta Home Living owner, Torben Knudsen
“Because we are the only Betta stores in Brisbane, our customer base and delivery area is large. We travel quite a distance, at times up to the Sunshine Coast, approximately 95km north of Virginia and out to Springfield Lakes, approximately 45km south of Virginia. We embrace it and conduct ourselves as though we have the same number of stores Betta offered at its peak. Twenty years ago there would have been approximately 50 Betta stores in Brisbane, including some Chandler branded stores,” Knudsen said.
THOUGHTS ON AMAZON
Knudsen’s Betta Home Living staff members Don Burgess, Torben Knudsen, Duncan Ensor
and high turnover – stack them high, sell them low. However, the impact of the GFC meant we had to adopt a different attitude. We had to start to think about profitability with a decreased turnover. The mindset in the industry changed. Suppliers had plenty of stock to move and offered deals to keep production fluid. Today stock flow is limited and at the discretion of the supplier,” he explained.
BUSINESS STRENGTHS
As a needs-based retailer, Knudsen’s Betta Home Living is very strong in refrigeration and washing machines. “Cooking is also strong for us as BSR has recently pushed for it to become a bigger focus and our Virginia store boasts a working kitchen,” Knudsen said. “Our furniture offering is currently under development. We are introducing more bedding and lounges as another category under the Betta Home Living banner. We are gaining pleasing traction in this area. “We base our business on speed and fulfi lment. If Mrs Jones comes to purchase a washing machine, we like to, in every case, meet her needs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Often we are loading a product into the back of the ute or truck and following the customer to the product destination. This speed and efficiency cannot be offered by the internet and we continue to endeavour to combat its presence in our industry.
Knudsen sees Amazon as “just another competitor” and will continue to view them like the rest of the competition. “We don’t know a great deal about their structure or practice. From my personal perspective, I will wait and listen and follow the advice of BSR. I am certain they will have well thought out strategies ready to keep us viable in the ever changing industry. “The internet is a marvellous tool to access information and details, but it is memorable customer service that provides a sense of satisfaction,” Knudsen said.
PLANS FOR EXPANSION
Expansion is certainly on the cards but for Knudsen it’s about finding the right location, the right value and getting the cost structure right. “The electrical industry has a lean margin. It is vitally important to get it right. When investigating new locations, I endeavour to determine the level of turnover that could be achieved from the location. It is important to be thorough and I rely on my many years of experience to guide final judgements. After opening Redcliffe and Cannon Hill we have invested the time to ensure they are independently successful. It is then we will begin to investigate other locations,” he said. “Retailing in shopping centre tends to be a little easier because potential customers are already there. There is always something happening drawing people into the centre. It is paramount we remain current and provide reasons for customers to enter the store. Standalone stores are more of a destination. There are quiet days, but these stores are always in the minds of the community and where they go when they are investigating a new purchase,” he added. C
ord-free handstick vacuums continue to dominate the growth trend in the Australian floorcare market. Last year, approximately one-third of vacuums sold were cordless handsticks, according to GfK data, for the year ending July 2017. Unit sales increased 34% and value by 35%. However, the data showed steam cleaners taking a dive, down 16% in units and 14% in value although there was a slight 2% increase in average prices. These results are being attributed to the higher priced barrel/sledge type steam cleaners gaining more market share over steam mops. Overall, the floorcare market rose 2% in value and 6% in value. While cleaning is a chore that people prefer not to perform most consumers are generally willing to pay a premium for a better quality vacuum cleaner that is easy to use and gets the job done, according to Euromonitor
BY KYMBERLY MARTIN research analyst, Hianyang Chan. “In Australia, Dyson is the preferred brand due to the quality of their product range. However, a private label vacuum cleaner from Kmart recently gained much traction nationally with many stores unable to cope with demand. A survey of Dyson vacuum owners found that 85% of those who owned both a handstick and a bagless canister used the cord-free most often. However, people who do not own a cord-free vacuum are still sceptical that this smaller format can offer the same performance as a larger machine. This fi nding was reinforced by studies that Dyson commissioned at a global level, with perceptions around power and runtime remaining the key challenges for the category to address. It is anticipated that over the next five years big corded vacuums will become eclipsed by increasingly powerful cord-free formats as the main vacuum in the home.
Cord-free. Hassle-free. Powerful suction.
During the development of the new Miele Blizzard CX1 bagless vacuum cleaners that make their debut in October, consumer research found that emptying a bagless vacuum cleaner was an area of concern and that consumers are looking for a more hygienic solution. Innovation is the impetus to the change in consumer behaviour when it comes to the bagless category, according to the company. The transition to vacuum design with handstick solutions remains a key growth area, according to LG. Company strategy will continue to focus on both volume segments of the market as well as robotic products as it prepares to add to its range of powerful cordless handsticks with the A9 CordZero in Q4. TRENDS
Easy does it BY KYMBERLY MARTIN
F
loorcare is the most established category in Dyson’s technology portfolio and continues to be a strong source of growth for its business. The popularity of Dyson’s cord-free format in particular, is quickly evolving the shape of the company’s presence in the category by re-engaging existing owners, as well as bringing new audiences to the brand. According to Dyson, the V6 and V8 handstick ranges continue to perform well as consumers recognise the balance of versatility and power makes them a ‘must-have’ household appliance. People with busier lives need a vacuum that is convenient, quick to use, and does not compromise on performance, and Dyson claims to be at the forefront of this revolution with products engineered to achieve the optimum balance of powerful performance, ease of use and versatility. Handsticks have continued to gain in popularity with Miele taking the view that while handstick vacuum cleaners are suitable for shorter cleans, a canister vacuum cleaner, not being reliant on a short battery runtime, offers the ideal solution for a more powerful, deep clean of the entire household. The convenience of a robotic cleaner programmed for a daily clean completes the set. Despite a challenging canister market, Miele continues to perform strongly and remains the clear leader of the bagged canister segment, marketing director,
Gabriella Franklin said. “The launch of the Miele Blizzard CX1 bagless range will strengthen Miele’s position and reinforce its status as the vacuum cleaner specialist. The new range places Miele as one of the few brands that is able to provide a total floorcare solution to Australian consumers,” she said.
“WHILE HANDSTICK VACUUM CLEANERS ARE SUITABLE FOR SHORTER CLEANS, A CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER, NOT BEING RELIANT ON A SHORT BATTERY RUNTIME, OFFERS THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR A MORE POWERFUL, DEEP CLEAN OF THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD.” Miele, Gabriella Franklin.
LG – Brad Reed
Floorcare continues to be a major focus for LG as it targets the robotic and handstick sub-segments in what is a highly competitive category, senior marketing manager for home appliances, Brad Reed told AR. “We have seen progress over 2016 and sought to consolidate our position ahead of our new CordZero launch in late 2017.” One of the biggest trends in recent years observed by LG is to have multiple models in the home for different cleaning jobs that make vacuuming easier and more convenient. “The handstick area is growing and increasing in importance as technology evolves to support longer vacuum times and improved cleaning performance. Robotic vacuums are still a smaller niche offering with
consumers using them to keep things spic and span, even when they’re not home,” Reed said. Vax is celebrating a 40 year milestone in Australia and the message is that it will continue to work towards ensuring its products are practical, powerful and perfect for Australian homes, according to Techtronics Industries floorcare brand manager, Ricardo Rogers. “Over this time we have developed a comprehensive range of carpet cleaners, uprights, barrels, steam and hard floor cleaners, and more recently achieved great results with cordless technology. We will continue to release a range of cordless products incorporating the latest technology that offer the user convenient cleaning options,” he said. Steam has also been high on the priority list with the latest GfK data showing Vax is the leading steam range in Australia.
AR FLOORCARE and extensive campaigns have been undertaken internationally to help guide and evaluate new product development,” he said.
Electrolux is enjoying growth from its bagged and bagless products against what the company described as a declining market. “We are seeing growth in our battery product category too,” business development manager floorcare, Julian Huitfeldt said. Cleanstar – Garth Michalson
Electrolux – Julian Huitfeldt
“While battery is not quite there yet when it comes to replacing deep down cleaning from canisters, we do expect consumers will continue to be drawn to the convenience of the quick ‘grab and go’ cleaning solutions offered in our Ergorapido range which is driving demand for these products.” He said delivering benefits that simplify the cleaning process and solve consumer frustrations is a primary direction for Electrolux. The category continues to exceed expectations for IXL Home with robust sales growth across the full range of iRobot products, according to brand manager, Emma Basquille. “iRobot maintains a leading position in the robotic vacuum and mopping segments and the launch of the Roomba 980 in 2016 cemented its position even further.” The strongest trend lies within Wi-Fi connectivity via the iRobot Home App, she said, as it provides customers multiple benefits of smart home technology from scheduling cleaning jobs, to notifications and direct access to customer support. The benefits of cloud-connected cleaning will be extended in the Q4 calendar year with the launch of the Roomba 890 and Roomba 690 and the Roomba 637 standard-setting vacuuming robot. The floorcare category for Cleanstar performs better each year with managing director, Garth Michalson attributing this to “good, old-fashioned service coupled with generous margins”. The strongest trend in the floorcare category is stickvacs 30

because everyone wants to be able to vacuum with cordless convenience, he said. “There is a demand for these products and sales are increasing in every state and we will continue to offer more convenience, battery powered stickvacs and vacuum cleaners in general.” The Australian family-owned business wholesales floorcare products to the industry. Bissell is achieving good “yearon-year-growth” managing director, Chris Egan said, although June momentum was a little soft, possibly due to end of fi nancial year influences. He said this was more than offset by outstanding May and July results. “Our carpet washing or deep cleaning segment is performing well, buoyed by the combination of new products. This segment has a lower household penetration than global averages which means there is plenty of potential for growth for local retailers. We have implemented research into various aspects of our marketing activities

More power to the cordless BY KYMBERLY MARTIN
T
he Dyson V8 Absolute+ vacuum, launched in 2016, continues to be the brand's hero SKU, claiming to offer the most powerful suction of any cordfree vacuum on the market along with 40 minutes of runtime. It comes with six specially engineered tools for increased versatility, allowing it to be used easily in a variety of scenarios, from inside the car to all surfaces throughout the home. A new battery runtime indicator gives the user a visual indication of remaining cleaning time and is 50% quieter than previous generation machines. The 2 Tier Radial cyclones ensure that suction power is sustained as well as contributing to whole machine HEPA fi ltration. New generation battery chemistry is powered by nickel-cobaltaluminium that delivers extra power and up to twice the run time of the V6. The product comes with two directdrive motorised cleaner heads. The soft-roller is engineered for hard floors with the direct-drive head designed for powerful performance on carpets. The past year saw Dyson’s commitment to making market-leading vacuums recognised with the Readers’ Digest Award for the ‘most trusted vacuum cleaner brand 2017’. This is in addition to carrying a ‘Choice Recommended’ status and a Good Design Award on the V8 cord free range. From October, Miele enters the bagless canister segment for the

fi rst time with the Blizzard CX1. “Initially, consumers will be most impressed with the quiet efficiency and powerful pick up of the Blizzard CX1 that provides excellent cleaning results on various surfaces. Miele’s exclusive inventive development of Vortex technology is responsible for achieving these outstanding results, never previously attained in bagless vacuuming,” Gabriella Franklin said. The Blizzard CX1 range also claims to deliver new standards of hygienic Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog

dust disposal to the bagless category. Only coarser dust particles, those less likely to become airborne, find their way to the dust container, making emptying more efficient as well as hygienic. Miele’s multi-stage filtration system effectively separates coarse and fine dust. While coarse dust remains in the cylinder, fine dust is captured by the pleated Gore CleanStream fine dust filter. To empty, simply remove the filter container and place under running water, when prompted by the controls, once or twice a year. All components are designed so there is no direct physical contact with dirt, either when emptying the container or when cleaning the filter. The Blizzard CX1 is equipped with a lifetime HEPA filter and like the fine dust filter, never needs replacing. The range also includes Cat & Dog, Multi-Floor and Comfort models. The current LG vacuum range has many options for retailers and consumers, including robotic vacuums and handsticks. The soon-to-launch CordZero A9 range will carry advances in suction power, improved motor technology and increased runtime. Features include the brushless LG smart inverter motor, 36 superfine spiral blades within the conical cylinder to maintain suction power and aid in dust separation and up to 80-minutes runtime. There are five models for all

RRPs start at $699 for the entry level model and up to RRP $999 for the top of the line model that includes two batteries, floor stand and a range of cleaning nozzle accessories. The LG Roboking Turbo range offers units with Wi-Fi capabilities, HomeView and HomeGuard that allow for monitoring the home through the vacuum. The current LG CordZero handstick models increase usability with a detachable handstick, easy grip handle, 180 degree swivel head, a lightweight design and anti-tangle brush. The new Vax Blade cordless combines contemporary design with new Direct Helix technology for maximum cleaning performance in any orientation. “This provides three-dimensional support inside the horizontal dirt bin, intersecting the cleaning wand by giving a direct air path from the floor to the cyclone for maximum performance and efficiency,” Ricardo Rogers said. The detachable handheld is designed to easily clean stairs, cars and upholstery as well as removing pet hair. The unit effectively captures dirt and debris in a compressed puck and together with the easy access cyclone, removable filter and quick empty dirt bin delivers a hygienic, effortless, maintenance system. Cleanstar is in the throes of developing a stickvac that is lighter, will offer a longer run time and faster re-charging. Floorcare models within the current stickvac range comprise the Stellar, Galaxy and Chaser from 22V to 25V, each with a detachable handvac. The hero product is the robust Chaser 2-in-1 that comes with a 180 degree swivel floor head, wall mount bracket, an easy to empty dust tank, lithium-ion battery and rotating power brush. Low noise and efficient fi ltration are the key solutions consumers seek from their floorcare products according to Electrolux. The Ultra Silencer with Silent Air technology together with sealed HEPA fi ltration on all canister machines are range examples, according to Julian Huitfeldt. “The most understated design feature sits with our Ergorapido that 34

IXL will introduce the Roomba 890 and Roomba 690 in Q4. These Wi-Fi connected vacuuming robots are ready to clean from anywhere, anytime and can be scheduled to clean up to seven times a week. “By extending the benefits of connectivity from the top-ofthe-line Roomba 980 down, gives more customers the chance to experience added functionality and the benefits of smart home technology at an affordable price,” Emma Basquille said. The Roomba 630, 650 and 866 will be phased out from the range and replaced with Roomba 637, 690 and
890. The Roomba 980, the fi rst app enabled robotic vac to launch here and Braava 380t mopping robot are the hero products for its robotic floorcare range, she said. Bissell’s cleaning path will concentrate on performance and ease of use, especially for pet owners which are the majority of households, according to Chris Egan. Recent examples of new design advances highlight Bissell technology that delivers more than surface vacuuming when it comes to carpets, upholstery and hard surfaces. Among the recent product launches are the Revolution lightweight carpet washer that Egan claims out-cleans leading professional machines without leaving a wet carpet and the Stain Eraser, a portable carpet and upholstery washer. There have also been updates to SpotClean models and new canister vacuums. On the pet care front comes the BarkBath, a faster, easier and less messy way to care for dogs while the Pet Hair Eraser gives tangle-free cleaning and easy emptying. “Powerful. Quiet. German.” is the prime branding message that Bosch said captures the company's point of difference that is at the core of the Relaxx’x range of bagless vacuum cleaners. The Relaxx’x range has a highspin energy-efficient motor engineered with silence in mind, operating at a maximum 74 dB(A). Another key innovation of the Relaxx’x range is the new SmartSensor Control technology, which monitors airflow and prompts the user to clean the filters once the machine detects a reduced level of airflow. The fully automated SelfClean function, available on selected models, initiates automatically when the filter becomes blocked or requires cleaning. Alternatively, pressing the SelfClean button manually starts the process after each use if required. Sebo commercial vacuum cleaners are the leading gold standard in carpet care and maintenance world-wide, according to Kristine Collins. “We implement the same professional technology into our domestic models which have been designed to remove the maximum amount of debris from soft floor furnishings. Price is rarely a factor in the decision making process.” AR

committing to the purchase. “It’s worth keeping in mind that a vacuum a friend uses may not be right for the customer if they have different floors and cleaning habits.” For these reasons online sales are not always preferred over buying in-store. From a price level, Sawkins said current market price is always on a customer’s mind, “however customers are prepared to pay a bit more if you can show them the benefits”. As for closing the sale, the store does offer value-add promotions like wine and gift cards that
give the store a point of difference and help complete the transaction. As for features requested by customers – you probably guessed it – cordless which then leads into runtime, he said. Hair pick up from pets and people is another call and compatibility of the appliances with multiple floor types also comes into the features picture. Sawkins also mentioned new technologies in robotic vacuums that can be controlled from a smart device to clean the home from just about anywhere are catching attention. “New product launches in October from Miele and LG look exciting too.” As for the bag versus bagless debate, it comes down to the customer and how much they value their time. “A bagless vacuum does need to be maintained – emptied, filters washed and dust canisters cleaned – while with the bag machine you just swap the bags and filters. Does the customer want to save time or money? If your time is worth $25 an hour the answer is that these work out to be the same.” One of the big challenges facing the industry is consumer education. Explaining what a stick vacuum actually gets out of the floor compared to a mains product and why to shampoo for removing allergens and dust mites. His final words were about how the retailer would tackle Amazon. “Our approach will be the same as it is now. Monitor the market and ensure we are competitive to take price out of the equation and win on great service and the in-store experience.” AR
Bissell is offering a pet pack valued at $180 as gift-with-purchase with any Bissell purchase exceeding $249. TV advertising is also backing the range during the spring months.

No signs of a slowdown for automation, security and surveillance BY EMILY BENCIC
A
ustralian consumers are set to become even more connected with the use of smart devices expected to rise by 124% as the average household number grows from 13.7 in 2017 to 30.7 in 2021, according to the Telsyte Australian IoT@Home Market Study 2017 report. Uniden is performing well in a number of key categories, including surveillance, landline phones, UHF radios and baby monitors. The expansion of the Guardian wireless surveillance range has been popular with consumers, according to national marketing communications manager, Brad Hales, with the introduction of two packages that include additional cameras and spotlights as standard. Uniden has recently refreshed the SSE45/47 visual and hearing enhanced cordless phone range that will provide assistance to the growing mature
population, as well as assist with daily communication to those who need it the most. UHF radios and the awardwinning BabyWatch range continue to exceed sales expectations for Uniden. “We are fi nding that consumers are actively searching for the brand thanks to recommendations within online forums and blogs, awards and additionally buoyed by an active advertising program in key parenting media,”he said. Over the past 12 months, D-Link has seen a sharp increase in the number of connected home devices, led largely by its connected ‘SmartPlug’ device. “This device allows consumers to monitor their energy usage on products they connect to the SmartPlug, such as washing machines, dishwashers, lamps and more, and then schedule them to turn on at different ‘off-peak’ times, thereby reducing energy bills,”
D-Link ANZ managing director, Graeme Reardon said. “Once customers see this immediate benefit, they seem to come back to expand their connected home line-up by adding sensors and sirens that can help the security side of their home. We are also seeing a definite move to higher featured cameras, with a minimum of HD Video (and more often Full HD) as more the norm than previously. “The increase in connected home devices has been a slow, but steady, burn due to a lack of education on what these devices can do, and consumers not seeing the benefit or potential in this space. As the home automation or smart home space continues to mature, and we see bigger players such as Apple with HomeKit, and Google Home launch on the local market, consumers are becoming more aware of these types of products and the applications they are designed for,” he added. UHF CB and hand-held radios is another important segment for Uniden with a range of solutions for remote and urban areas, as well as antennas to complete the offering. “We now have a lot of video content online which demonstrates the capability of our range both for the recreational and professional user. social media also translating to sales for our retailers,” he said. In response to the introduction of the NBN, VTech has introduced a suite of new products this year. “NBN will provide some reinvigoration to the home phone market. As a voice service is built into the vast majority of NBN plans, consumers will be taking this on as part of their NBN sign up and will continue to need a home phone device to operate the service,” managing director, Mark Franklin said “Another major trend in the cordless phone category is a move to more attractive designs with the right features. Consumers are no longer looking simply for the most ‘techy’ product or the best looking but want a convincing mix between the two,” he added. In line with the growth of the ‘smart home’ and the Internet of Things, consumers are looking for reliable wireless systems in the home that offer convenience, Panasonic product marketing manager for home automation, Samantha Dawson said.

“This includes technology that connects with users’ smart devices and offers them ease of use and peace of mind. Panasonic’s products are designed to the meet these needs through advanced connectivity and practical functionality. “As the Australian population ages, Panasonic has designed the KXTGM420 amplified cordless system home phone solution for the hearing impaired. One in six Australians are affected by hearing loss and this technology is designed to make life easier for those consumers,” she added. With energy prices continuing to rise dramatically across the country, consumers are looking for inexpensive ways to monitor, track, and tackle energy usage, D-Link ANZ managing director, Graeme Reardon said. “A single SmartPlug could potentially save hundreds or even thousands of dollars over an annual billing cycle. nnovation remained one of the key drivers of growth within the personal care category, according to Euromonitor senior research analyst, Hianyang Chan. “Consumers are increasingly time poor but still want similar results from salon visits in the comfort of their home, resulting in a shift in demand for higher quality products with easy-to-use features to achieve a professional-like experience and finishing. Advertising was not only important in driving sales for a brand but also to help educate consumers about the type of products available and encourage them to purchase different products with new features, he said. Haircare saw a huge uplift in value at 44% compared to units at 5%, according

to latest data from GfK, primarily driven by hair dryers, up 81% in value and 10% in units. The $90 and above price point has doubled its share in volume and in value, accounting for more than half of the market. Products under the $30 price point are still popular, making up 60% of the market with 11% growth in volume. Hair stylers experienced a 10% jump in value, although units remained flat with no change. In April 2016, Dyson launched its Supersonic hair dryer, engineered around the high-speed, patented, V9 Dyson digital motor. The haircare industry is worth $153.4 million in Australia, $452 million in Japan, $483 million in China, $1 billion in the US and 1 billion Euros in the EU.
Dyson is now number one in value in the personal care category (2017 GfK data). Since the launch of the Supersonic hair dryer, over 90% of reviews globally award the machine 4 or 5 stars out of 5, and the Mother’s Day campaign resulted in the highest weekly Supersonic hair dryer sales for 2017. GfK data reported a slight decline in units and value for the hair removal market. Shavers still account for a large segment of male hair removal, with 41% value share. Multi-grooming kits and beard trimmers saw double digit growth in units and value. For women, epilators and ladies IPL/Laser make up the majority of the market in value at 70%, although units make up less than a third of the market. AR

Looking good and feeling good is more important than ever BY EMILY BENCIC
O
ne of the strongest trends in hair care for 2017 is consumer demand for ways to maintain hair health, according to Dyson. “There is an educational job to be done around intelligent beauty technology that can help protect hair from damage. Some conventional hair dryers can reach extreme temperatures, especially when held close to the head, potentially causing extreme heat damage to hair. With the launch of the Supersonic hair dryer, Dyson aimed to give consumers the ability to style their hair, with less damage,” Dyson said. Dyson research has found that 50% of people defi ne their hair as “extremely important” to their overall look and feel; the average woman owns 3.3 different styling appliances; 27% of Australians say their biggest frustration with using a hairdryer is their “arms getting tired”; 67% of Australians say they “must own” a hairdryer, with 49% using a hairdryer at least twice a week. Survey findings suggest that up to 95% of men are now ‘manscaping’, and with this in mind Panasonic has introduced the ER-GK60 3-in-1 wet/dry body groomer to address the increasing need for men to quickly, easily and precisely remove, style and trim body hair, including the chest, legs and hardto-reach body zones. Furthermore, an internal Panasonic study found that over 40% of Australian men think shaving is a hassle. “Many men simply lack the time, money or tools for ‘manscaping’. Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology continues to dominate the personal care industry, according to Tanita, and there is an increased awareness of how using a body composition monitor at home can help and improve one’s lifestyle. “Research has shown that even if a person’s weight and body fat remains constant, as a person ages the distribution of fat changes and is more likely to shift to the torso area. n July 2017, Dyson launched its limited edition purple Supersonic hair dryer (RRP $499) in time for the Christmas gifting season. Dyson invested £50 million in the development of its hair dryer including creating a stateof-the-art laboratory dedicated to investigating the science of hair. The company’s engineers studied hair from root to tip, understanding how it reacts to stresses, how to keep it healthy and how to style it. The Supersonic hair dryer is powered by the patented Dyson digital motor V9 – the smallest, lightest, and most advanced digital motor from Dyson. It also has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 20 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element. It has four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot, in addition to three precisely engineered magnetic attachments.

The Panasonic body groomer ERGK60 (RRP $599.95) uses innovative Japanese blade technology to provide a close body shave to 0.1mm, while the sensitive attachment enables safe cutting without harming or irritating soft skin in sensitive areas. Its new i-shaped design with a slim, ergonomic shape makes it easy to trim hard-to-reach and sensitive areas, and allows for maximum precision in hair removal. It can be operated wet or dry without shaving foam for quick convenience. The waterproofing also allows for easy and hygienic maintenance when cleaning the unit. It comes with a charging station featuring an indicator lamp and each charge allows an operating time of 40 minutes. Braun is bringing its AutoSense technology from the Series 9 and Series 7 to the Series 5 shaver range to automatically and continually read the differences in beard density along the cheeks, neck and jaw as power flow adjusts accordingly to accelerate, ensuring the same performance throughout the entire shave.
With SkinSensitive Technology, the new Braun Series 5 combines power and precision, and its Comfort FlexHead navigates the larger and smallest contours with ease. For female consumers, the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa now includes a new deep massage body pad for a soft and relaxing massage effect. Key features include 60 soft silicone tips that adapt to body contours, stimulating the blood circulation for radiant looking skin and sonic technology that helps improve skin appearance with a combined massage and exfoliation effect. The Braun epilator removes even the shortest hairs that wax cannot catch for up to four weeks for long lasting salonsmooth skin. Attaching the new deep exfoliation brush reduces ingrown hair with an exfoliation performance that is six times more effective than a manual scrub alone. The cartridge with 250,000 light pulses means it is sufficient for 40-60 years with normal usage. It will take the user approximately 26 minutes to treat the entire body and there is up to 50% hair reduction after three to four treatments. The MyIPL app, suitable for all Beurer IPL devices, provides calendar reminders, user guides and helpful hints. Users simply need to select their Beurer IPL device, choose the body part they will use the device on, select hair and skin colour to qualify that the skin is suitable and treatable. The app then creates an individual treatment schedule clearly arranged in the calendar. It will recommend treatment sequence and the ‘Set a Reminder’ function means the user will never miss a session. The Tanita Body Composition Monitor RD-545 (RRP $899) can aid users in monitoring their cardiovascular function and daily health condition through its heart rate feature and in turn, determine the intensity of exercise required to efficiently burn body fat. he personal care category on Appliances Online has grown this year and campaign manager, Katie Lansdale expects this trend to continue as the online retailer increases its range. “In addition, I expect health and wellness related products to grow as consumers seek to lead healthy and balanced lifestyles.” When asked about top selling products, Lansdale noted male grooming, specifically beard trimmers
BY EMILY BENCIC as “quite popular in line with the trend of trimming rather than close shaving”. “Supplier promotions help get certain types of customers over the line, although different types of promotions work for different brands and customer segments. Besides price, we believe that reviews can be a huge influencer, be it our own professional video reviews or reviews left by real customers,” she said. Appliances Online sells personal care products from Braun, Beurer, Oral-B, Philips, and more. AR
A male gift pack will be available with the Braun Series 3 shaver, a bonus toiletry bag, pouch to store the shaver and shave gel. There will also be two female beauty gift packs with the Silk-epil 5 and Silk-epil 7 and a bonus facial cleansing brush.

AR RETAIL RULES
Personalisation vs Privacy: Walking the tightrope Norrelle Goldring from GfK discusses the trend for personalisation amid prevailing data security concerns
H
umans are a contradictory bunch. Health is a major macro trend for instance, but so is indulgence. We want to simplify our lives, but the adoption of technology for shopping has actually increased the number of touchpoints we use in shopping journeys - albeit we now pound the pavement less as we do more searches online. These contradictions also play out in our need for personalisation and tailoring, and our concerns about privacy and security. According to GfK’s annual ConsumerLife study, Australians are at the ‘more private’ end of the global spectrum, with only 35% willing to share most personal details with corporations. GfK’s annual Futurebuy study looks at a number of measures around the areas of personalisation and also privacy. The salient statistics from the 2016 data reveal, as anticipated, a confl icted picture. But the common theme is that the Millennials (Generations Y and Z) are more likely to adopt mobile technology for personalisation as well as efficiency reasons. At the overall level we have 31% of the sampled Australians agreeing that they like it when a website keeps track of visits and then recommends things to them. This rises to 37% for Gen Z and 43% for Gen Y. We have 26% agreeing that they like it when retailers contact them on their device with relevant offers
when they are out shopping, and this increases to 35% for Gen Z and 37% for Gen Y. And we have 39% agreeing that they would be more loyal to a brand or retailer that lets them give input into and help shape the products and services they buy. This rises to 44% for Gen Z and 51% for Gen Y. Further, we have 29% of the total sample (39% of Gen Z and 46% of Gen Y) agreeing that their social media networks have become as important as other information sources in making product and shopping decisions. On the other hand, we have nearly two thirds (63% of the total) concerned about the security of their personal information when shopping online versus in a physical store. And this percentage didn’t vary much across the generations. Let’s look at how this generational dynamic plays out with mobile device payments such as ApplePay. 21% prefer to make payments with their mobile device (27% Gen Z, 30% Gen Y) Likes about mobile phone payments versus other payment methods: More efficient 25% (39% for Gen Z), Easier 26%, Faster 28% But … • Only 19% think mobile device payments are more secure than other methods • Only 21% think mobile device payments are 100% secure (34% for Gen Z) • 57% are worried about their personal information (interestingly, 61% for Gen Y, higher than Gen X or Boomers).
Interesting then, that Australia leads the world in tap & go credit card payments; shoppers have relatively few privacy concerns about waving their credit card across a device in a store, likely because it’s a tweak of an already familiar behaviour and payment method. According to FutureBuy, mobile device payments in Australia are currently only 4% of shopping transactions, where the figure is 21% for China (the world leader in ecommerce and particularly mcommerce). Large scale data breaches and payment glitches by retailers and payment systems feed shoppers’ concerns about security and privacy. There is an expectation, but not necessarily a belief, that corporations will use personal data responsibly and that it is secure. However, the relentless march of mobile based technology adoption, particularly by Millennials, means that ultimately the need for personalisation and transactional efficiency will outweigh privacy concerns. Millennials (Gens Z and Y) are now a larger group than the Baby Boomers in Australia. They are the bellwethers of behaviour. Retailers and manufacturers will lose out if they don’t cater to the millennial expectation for mobile based individualised communications.
