elcome to Spring and Summer of 2016 and the New Year. This edition of the New Zealand epay World magazine sets out a number of key initiatives and benefits that epay and Giftstation provide you and the global consumers we deal with. epay continues to drive innovation in both product format and product offer as well as new product categories. The age of digital has arrived and each month, quarter and year we see more and more content being delivered in these different formats. This is a product format to be welcomed and embraced and not one you should shy away from. The early adopters have already learnt the lessons that new technology and platforms can give us. To optimise on this new technology your store needs to be able to read 2D barcodes, QR codes, digital voucher codes and tap and pay technology from smartphone, or other smart devices in order to capture all potential sales and revenue opportunities that are coming your way. There is a lot of artificial intelligence being captured now by devices and technology companies to help drive educated business decisions for consumers to more easily interact with you the retailers, restaurants, bars, convenience stores etc. You need to make sure your business is trading online, has rewards or loyalty offers that are instant gratification specific and bring the customer back into your environment. There has been a lot of negative presumptions made in the press lately around gift card expiry dates and un-spent funds. As the largest out-of-store gift card program owner in the country we want to put these misconceptions in the true format that should be. epay Giftstation has over 100 partners on its gift card platform and can categorically say that un-spent funds do not account for the costs to run gift card programs across card production, art work creation, freight, packaging, warehousing storage, pick and pack,
“Digital is a product format to be welcomed and embraced and not one you should shy away from. The early adopters have already learnt the lessons that new technology and platforms can give us.” merchandising and administrative costs. epay works with retail brand owners on expiry dates and offers an extra 31 days on all Giftstation gift cards over and above the expiry printed on the card. epay processes over 600 expiry date extension requests each year and over 500 card balance changeovers as well. Giftstation is committed to gift card consumers having the best experience they can have. That is why, with a Giftstation gift card, the funds are held in their own professional trust account with ASB Bank. Which means even if a retail brand closes down or goes under your funds are secure and can be transferred to a new retail brand of your choice for you to spend this money on. We have also spent a lot of time, effort and resource on launching our mobile app and digital services so getting card balances and expiry is at the push of a button. This will enable consumers to have full visibility and control over how their gift card is spent. All the very best for the trading period coming up and we look forward to seeing a number of you in the Christmas trading period. Best regards.

WHAT’S
HOT
These are the big ticket items with consumers right now.
Apple Music Apple Music combines subscription-based music streaming with global radiolike programming and a social feature that connects artists to fans. It’s an allyou-can-eat service for subscribers: pay a flat fee, and you unlock Apple Music’s extensive 30 million-song library. So what’s the difference between Apple Music and iTunes you ask? iTunes is basically a virtual record store, whereas Apple Music is all about streaming and you essentially pay a flat fee to unlock Apple Music’s entire music library and it’s free to listen to this vast range of music without having to purchase or download songs and albums individually.
paysafecard This prepaid online payment method allows customers to pay online quickly and is just as easy and safe as using cash. This prepaid method can guarantee absolute security and privacy. The paysafecard works in a similar way to mobile prepaid cards. Users can purchase their vouchers in denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 NZD from retailers worldwide and then make purchases online without any link to a bank account. paysafecard is the perfect solution for customers who value their data security or for those who want to limit their spending.

Pure Commerce technology is a game changer, now with a wide range of terminals identifying international credit cards and provides customers the option of paying in New Zealand Dollars or their home currency at a competitive exchange rate, with no messy calculations. Since the Pure Commerce acquisition, epay have implemented BNZ CurrencySelect EFTPOS into a range of small to large retailers, tourism operators, hotels, fast food outlets, bars and restaurants throughout the country. We also operate in all major duty free stores within New Zealand. There’s no magic, just clever thinking! A BNZ CurrencySelect EFTPOS Business Profile: The Loop Duty Free/ARI – Auckland Airport How long have you been established? Aer Rianta International (ARI) is one of the world’s longest-established and most successful travel retail companies. Since we created the first Duty Free shop at Shannon Airport in 1947, the ARI story has been one of continuous change and growth. The Loop Duty Free is the brand that ARI Auckland trades under in the New Zealand market. The Loop Duty Free at Auckland Airport was opened in June 2015. What is your ethos and mission statement? The Loop is a retail concept that seeks to combine the thrill of shopping and travel to consistently deliver the most outstanding shopping experience. Our mission statement is to deliver an outstanding shopping experience every time.
How do international visitors impact The Loop? About 50 percent of our customers are from outside of New Zealand and we are always looking at ways to make the shopping experience easier for them. Having product ranges that we know will appeal to customers of different nationalities as well as providing the best in New Zealand products and brands. How have you benefited from BNZ Currency Select EFTPOS? We benefit through the certainty it provides our customers as to the total transaction cost, approximately 50 percent of our customers are from overseas and the take up of currency select from this customer base is significant. We also benefit from the reduction in merchant service fees the currency select transactions provide. What does the future hold? From the world's first Duty Free Liquor shop in 1951 and the first airport Duty Free shop in Russia in 1988 to our recent entry into Auckland, New Zealand, we are a company that has successfully created new business opportunities. After almost 75 years in the travel retail business, with new stores in Abu Dhabi and Muscat opening within two years and other opportunities in the Australasia region, we are excited about the business and partnership opportunities that lie ahead.

RETAILER PROFILE
SPOT LIGHT... Blair Hughes – Owner/Operator PAPER PLUS NEW BRIGHTON
What are the keys to being a successful retailer? Being able to create the moment where a customer commits to a purchase, requires the right product at the right time in the right environment. Firstly, you have to be open at the times your customer needs and your retail store needs to be presented in a professional and tidy manner. One thing many forget is less can sometimes be more and having the right stock is important but having the right amount is as well. If customers are unable to find a product because the store is too cluttered or untidy then sales can be lost. It is important to remember your customers’ needs so don't buy for what you would like to sell or purchase yourself. You must know what products may benefit them and stock those. Staff training is also very important. As an owner, you can't be in store all the time so you have to rely on your staff to deliver when you are not there. It takes a lot of time but the investment is worthwhile. Why are epay gift cards good to stock? They give the customer more choices. There will be occasions when you don't have what the customer is looking for but by offering the gift card range means they can still shop in my store. They also create the opportunity to interact with the customer and potentially up-sell opportunities. The range of cards is wide enough to satisfy all of the customers. 22
e p a y S P RIN G S U M M E R 2 016 / 17
What special marketing do you undertake that generates sales? We belong to the Paper Plus group so most marketing is handled by our support office. However, I do local advertising in the paper to ensure customers are aware of the other services we provide and we are a NZ Post and Kiwibank outlet and we use Facebook and other online media. Even though the brands backing us are strong, they will only continue to be that way if they are kept front and centre in customers’ minds. How do you maximise the impact of these gift cards? We have a large display stand near our retail counter which is in easy view of customers. Which epay products prove most successful and why? The majority of epay sales during the year are mobile topups. With the majority of mobile users now on prepaid this drives sales of this product and creates foot traffic for the store. These are followed by GLOBUG top-ups and then gift cards - especially iTunes. With online usage increasing and many customers not willing to place details of their credit cards online, the purchase of ITunes and Microsoft gift cards gives some security to the customer.
CHRISTMAS SPOTLIGHT
CHRISTMAS IS COMING Get prepared for Christmas and avoid the rush to maximise returns. More and more retailers are realising that the earlier they plan for key sales periods like Christmas the more profitable and hassle-free they can be. Getting ahead of the game aligns yourself to the shopping habits of consumers, who are buying gifts at various times of the year to capitalise on sales and to avoid the queues. And more importantly, by establishing a plan in advance, shop owners increase their readiness for the expected rush, which leads to a more enjoyable experience for all. Consider these things when preparing for Christmas in your store: Point of sale Take advantage of the clever advances in POS tools in recent years to encourage purchases at your register. Great POS items will promote items for sale to more customers, which is always a positive. Experience shopping Make shopping an experience again and bring customers back to your store for more than just the transaction. epay has a range of stands to suit a range of retail environments that draw attention to products and add pizzazz to attract consumers. Customer service is key As well as experience shopping, one of the best things you can offer is the ultimate in customer service. It’s one of the biggest points of difference between you and the online experience and the human touch just can’t be beaten. Point of difference Finding something that really sets your store apart from others is going to be crucial to bring in shoppers. epay’s gift cards are perfect gift ideas as they make the buying experience easy and can be conveniently placed at your POS to attract impulse purchases. e p a y S P RIN G S U M M E R 2 016 / 17
