BSCNZ wishes to thank our CleanSweep™ Award Sponsors Read on to find out what each of our sponsors have instore for 2018 and why they chose to sponsor this year’s BSCNZ CleanSweep™ Awards
Careerforce supports employers to implement workplace-based training so staff can gain nationally-recognised qualifications. As the ITO for the cleaning sector, its programmes allow cleaners to pathway from level 2 to 3 cleaning qualifications (with specialist cleaning/supervision strand options).
2018 is all about innovation, customer centric innovation that improves our responsiveness, transparency and most importantly our solution for the customer.
At CleanNZ 2018, Careerforce is showcasing its new business qualification programme, a key addition since the last expo.
Of particular interest to the cleaning industry will be our online reporting tool ‘MyInitial’. MyInitial has been developed by Initial Hygiene, to enable cleaners and FMs to remotely view, in real time, the status of their customers washroom servicing.
These new business programmes, ranging from levels 3 to 6 were developed to enhance administration, leadership and management skills across the sectors that Careerforce supports. Careerforce’s, Penny Barrett, has a special interest in the cleaning sector and will present these programmes at the conference. “It’s about supporting employers and their teams to achieve their objectives through work-based learning. We want to enable them in making the right decisions for their organisations through modern business practice tools and strategies,” says Penny. Visitors to the Careerforce stand at the expo will have an opportunity to learn about the full range of cleaning and business qualifications available, and learn how their organisation can get started. “We really are proud to be supporting the CleanSweep™ Awards in 2018,” says Ray Lind CEO Careerforce. “We wish to recognise employers who have a strong training culture and are committed to upskilling their staff. These awards recognise organisations who invest in education and training to maintain consistently highquality standards. We’re proud to support the industry and look forward to meeting employers at CleanNZ.”
With a key focus on technology, we are revolutionising the industry through connected technology linked to online customer platforms.
As well as the client’s signature, all servicing information automatically synchronises with the MyInitial system, allowing the customer to immediately log on, view full details of the service that has just been undertaken by Initial Hygiene and see details of when the next service is due. Kennedy Short, Head of Sales Operations & Marketing comments “MyInitial provides a platform for our cleaning and FM partners to get immediate visibility of hygiene servicing at their customer sites. The system provides transparency that we are delivering on our service promise, creating confidence and peace of mind. The system is now live in New Zealand, after being successfully tested across the world; we are very much looking forward to introducing MyInitial to our cleaning partners.” We see fantastic adjacencies in what the cleaning, pest control and hygiene industries offer the customer. It is an honour to be able to support the BSCNZ CleanSweep™ 2018 awards and recognise those who work hard to be at the top of their game.

Editor’s note As we go to print on this issue of INCLEAN NZ we, like most of you reading, are preparing for CleanNZ. This year’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, with a number of new and returning exhibitors who are set to showcase the latest and greatest products and technologies. There’s also a great lineup of local and international speakers as part of CleanNZ’s education program (all sessions are free to attend) as well as additional seminars taking place in conjunction with the show, such as the inaugural Indoor Environmental Health Conference. Another event not to be missed is the BSCNZ’s gala dinner where the winners of this year’s CleanSweep Awards will be announced. For everything you need to know about CleanNZ turn to page 30 for the complete program directory. In this issue of INCLEAN NZ magazine, we tackle the topic of training. A common theme throughout our training focus is the need for greater staff communication and engagement. Retention remains a challenge for many in the cleaning industry due largely to the physically demanding nature of the role, the unconventional working hours and the lack of career development and professional pathways. As you’ll read, many believe keeping good staff comes down to better communication and accessing new ways to engage and train today’s cleaners. It’s clear there still needs to be a mindset shift for many within the industry. Training needs to be viewed as an ongoing investment, not a one-off, set-and-forget, task nor an operational cost. Read Robert Kravitz’s tips for combating worker turnover on page 24. Also in this edition, ECNZ’s Francesca Lipscombe addresses the importance of proper staff training for companies that wish to employ sustainable business practices (page 14), and Rubbermaid’s Daniel Balas looks at how to engage an ageing workforce (page 18). Another great homegrown story in this issue is on page 12 where Waste Management NZ discusses its journey in the electric vehicle space, and Officemax talks about what its recent acquisition of Waiwhetu Distributors means for the sector. Finally, a big thanks to the Interpoint Events team and the BSCNZ who all worked tirelessly on putting this year’s CleanNZ together. For those exhibiting we wish you a successful show and for those attending the INCLEAN NZ team and I look forward to seeing you there! Happy reading!

Clean Planet enters domestic cleaning market Commercial cleaning firm Clean Planet has launched a domestic division. Clean Planet’s general manager Tony Pattison said the launch is a natural progression for the company. “Organic growth in the domestic cleaning market is much faster than growth in the commercial cleaning sector,” Pattinson said. Clean Planet provides commercial cleaning services in Auckland, Hamilton, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Christchurch. Its domestic division will be offered first in Auckland, before being rolled out to existing branches over the next six months. The company has also introduced its own Uber-inspired booking app which quotes domestic services based on time, rather than size of the site. “The user purchases a period of time they want the cleaners to be cleaning, the app notifies the cleaners using the app that a job has become available, and the cleaner can accept or decline the job,” explained Pattison. The software is currently only available for Clean Planet franchisees in Auckland. It is also being considering for its commercial division. “We want our foundation to become more technology focused. Cleaning is still a very paper-based industry, and we plan to push into utilising the technologies that are available. We want to bring more functionality to our systems so we can be seen as a leader of cleaning technology.” Along with the move into the domestic cleaning market, Pattinson said Clean Planet will continue to expand in the commercial cleaning sector. “We’re not taking our eye off that ball. We plan to continue growing the commercial side into new regions and are now looking for master franchisors in many regions in New Zealand.” www.cleanplanet.co.nz 8 INCLEANNZ May 2018
Green Acres launches cleaning services app Green Acres has launched a new mobile app, Green Acres GO, which allows people to request on-demand home cleaning and lawn mowing services. Partnering with Vodafone, Green Acres commissioned software developers Sandfield to build the app based on the characteristics of car sharing service app Uber. The app is designed to provide opportunities for people wanting to supplement their incomes by providing home services in their spare time. Logan Sears, Green Acres CEO said Green Acres GO is a completely new business initiative. “It’s not about putting Green Acres on mobile. We’re looking at a different set of customers and a different group of service providers, reaching both with an app custom-designed to deliver a mobile-managed solution that seamlessly connects the two.” Green Acres has undertaken a pilot of the service in Auckland’s North Shore, with plans to roll out the service to other centres following the pilot. www.greenacrescommercial.co.nz

Education and transparency at the forefront of BSCNZ direction Newly appointed CEO of the BSCNZ Sarah McBride says transparency and education will be top of mind for the association in 2018. As the new CEO of the BSCNZ I am looking forward to continuing the momentum that has been generated over the past few years. This momentum has raised the profile of the cleaning industry, and also recognised the very specific topics and issues the industry faces daily. The collaboration of members, manufacturers, distributors and suppliers has ensured high quality standard practices have been integrated into business practises. In 2017, BSCNZ undertook an auditing process with members to provide further credibility to our brand by ensuring all registered members met the BSCNZ strict code of compliance and the relevant New Zealand Employment legislation. Here at BSCNZ we want to acknowledge the hard work of our members through this process. ‘Transparency’ is a key word for our industry moving forward. In March BSCNZ had the opportunity to attend and present at a forum themed, ‘Harnessing the Power of Business to Tackle Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking’. This forum was opened by Minister of Immigration Iain Lees-Galloway, who stated: “It’s clear that we have a problem with migrant exploitation in New Zealand, the enforcement agencies tell me that wherever they go looking for it, they find it.” The Minister of Immigration told attendees there were several investigations on modern-day slavery cases underway, stating the way forward was for government, businesses, unions, churches and nongovernment organisations to work together. A number of leading New Zealand businesses were in attendance at this event, they also presented and led the discussion into their work to ensure they source ethically. 10 INCLEANNZ May 2018
The BSCNZ presentation at this forum explained the member audit process developed in conjunction with MBIE. The BSCNZ was able to present our auditing process and highlight how this has assisted our members in raising their profile as a reputable cleaning businesses. This forum is set to continue and the BSCNZ has been invited to be involved. In 2018 education will be one of the strategic directions for BSCNZ. Education is the key to the success for the cleaning industry. The two main areas of focus will be, firstly leading businesses, and understanding the importance of their supply chain. And, secondly, for our industry cleaners, supervisors, managers, owner/ operators and directors. In 2018 BSCNZ will also host the BSCNZ CleanSweep™ Awards evening. This celebratory event will take place on the evening of 9 May at the Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland. There are 13 categories, with all entries to receive written feedback from the judge, highlighting any areas of concern. Two new awards have also been launched this year’s awards – Innovation and Outstanding Account Management. These two awards were opened to not only cleaning companies but also to our associate members. This fantastic event would not be possible without the continued support of our key associate members Karcher, Tork, Rentokil, Careerforce and NZ Cleaning Supplies. We look forward to seeing you all at the ‘Oscars of the cleaning industry’. www.bsc.org.nz

Leading the charge Waste Management has embarked on an ambitious, pioneering programme to reduce its carbon footprint by converting its diesel-powered trucks to electricity. Ruth Nicol spoke to Waste Management managing director Tom Nickels about the initiative. It’s easy enough to buy an eco-friendly electric car or van off the showroom floor – and many New Zealand companies are doing just that, including cleaning giant OCS and New Zealand’s largest waste collection and recycling company, Waste Management. They’re among 30 large companies that have agreed that at least 30 per cent of their corporate fleets will be electric vehicles (EVs) by 2019, as part of a landmark, joint private-sector commitment to the future of EVs in New Zealand. But it’s a bit more of a challenge to make the switch when most of your fleet is made up of large, diesel-powered waste collection trucks and there are no electric alternatives yet available. But that hasn’t stopped Waste Management – which operates 800 trucks and 200 light vehicles – from honouring its commitment to going electric. It’s embarked on an ambitious, pioneering programme to reduce its carbon footprint by converting its diesel-powered trucks to electricity. “We searched the globe looking for the best partner because you can’t buy suitable trucks off the showroom floor like you can cars,” says Waste Management managing director, Tom Nickels. “If we want to begin electrifying our trucking fleet we have to do it ourselves by converting conventional trucks.” Working in partnership with Dutch company EMOSS, Waste Management has now completed the first phase of a pilot programme to convert five different kinds of trucks – including a 12 INCLEANNZ May 2018
box body truck, two side loaders, a skip bin truck and a rear loader – to electricity. Three are already on the road in Auckland and Christchurch and another two are expected to arrive in the country from Holland in May. The vehicles are the first of their kind in the southern hemisphere, with every function powered by batteries – from the lifting arms to the motor to the computers that the driver uses to know which streets to travel down. Now the company is about to embark on phase two of the project – building a warehouse in Auckland to convert another 20 trucks to electricity using kitsets from EMOSS. “That should keep us busy for the next 18 months,” says Nickels. He says making the switch to EVs makes sense for his company, which has sustainability at its at its core. “Our purpose, the reason for our existence and for the services we offer, is all about sustainability. It’s what we do.” The fact that the company already generates renewable electricity using waste at its landfills is an even more compelling reason to switch its fleet to electricity. “We’re harnessing the energy component of people’s waste and putting it to good use. We’re the largest generator of renewable energy in Auckland and we believe we should be able to power our entire fleet with our own electricity.” And while range can be an issue for EVs – they can travel an average of about 180km on a single charge – range is not an issue for Waste Management’s trucks because they travel relatively short distances on very specific and well-defined routes. “We know precisely within five kilometres how far a truck is going to go, so we can design the route to make sure the range is covered.” Even the stop-start nature of the average rubbish-collection route is a bonus because, unlike a diesel-powered truck, it provides an

opportunity to use a process called regenerative braking to boost the amount of energy in the truck’s batteries. And as the lucky drivers of the converted trucks are finding, electric trucks are not only much quieter than their diesel-powered counterparts, they’re also very enjoyable to drive. “We’ve had great difficulty getting drivers out of the pilot trucks. They accelerate very quickly and they also go up hills with ease, particularly when they have a load on board.” As well as converting diesel trucks to electricity, the company is also committed to gradually replacing most of its 200-strong lightvehicle fleet to EVs. However, it plans to retain some petrol and diesel powered vehicles and trucks. “We’ll convert a large majority of the fleet but there are some applications that aren’t suited to electricity.” And while it’s having to take a DIY approach to converting the trucks at present, Nickels expects that to change. “They’ve already started making trucks in China, and European manufacturers such as Mercedes have said they are working on developing them, so they will eventually come onto the market.” In the meantime, Waste Management’s conversion programme is drawing a lot of attention from throughout Australasia, and its Auckland workshop could potentially allow other companies to switch their trucks to electricity without having to send trucks overseas. As to the future of EVs, Nickels has no doubt that they’re here to stay. “I believe that in 10 years’ time we’ll all be driving EVs and in five years’ time most of us will be driving them.” www.wastemanagement.co.nz

TRAINING
Training critical to meeting cleaning challenges Proper staff training is vital for cleaning companies that wish to employ sustainable practices, writes Environmental Choice New Zealand’s general manager Francesca Lipscombe. Commercial, institutional and residential property cleaning is an essential service in New Zealand, protecting the health of building occupants and providing a pleasant living and working environment. But the processes involved do potentially bring risks to cleaning employees, building occupants and to the environment. If cleaning services providers do wish to act responsibly and employ sustainable practices, proper training of their staff is critical. It’s important cleaning companies have a staff training plan and maintain a training record for each staff member to ensure the right training is completed before staff begin working independently. Cleaning chemicals pose the most immediate risks both to people and environment as they can be harmful to the skin and emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause respiratory problems, as well as affect water quality if not disposed of properly. Cleaning companies can make a big difference to the environment by careful selection of cleaning products, consumables and energyefficient equipment. They can also make an impact through the cleaning techniques they use – such as employing microfibre cloths to reduce chemical use. But that calls for staff to be thoroughly committed to these practices and that can only come from good training and emphasis on the importance of doing things right. Cleaning processes also generate or accumulate wastes that have to be managed properly. It’s vital cleaning staff are well trained in waste management and minimisation, and minimisation of fuel consumption through, for example, route planning and driver training. The very nature of the cleaning industry poses challenges for training. It is an industry that employs many new migrants for whom English may not be their first language – and staff turnover is also high. As a consequence, training must take into account factors like limited English proficiency. That’s particularly critical in the area of chemical handling, so we recommend instructions on dilution, use, and disposal of chemicals to be in easily understandable language with guiding illustrations where possible. The same goes for instructions on rinsing containers, returning them for refilling, recycling or disposing of them. Environmental Choice New Zealand has a criteria document (EC45) which covers all aspects of cleaning services; licensees who meet the specification have satisfied very stringent requirements including clear evidence of robust training practices. Two New Zealand cleaning services providers, The Eco Pro Cleaning Co. and CrestClean, have embraced the criteria and incorporated environmental best-practice into their cleaning regime. Eco Pro co-owner, financial controller and ‘eco warrior’ Anne Quaid joined the family business more than 20 years ago but has been involved in cleaning since she was a teenager. 14 INCLEANNZ May 2018
With her father David Wilson (now retired) and husband Bob, she can point to around 100 years’ collective cleaning experience in the family. The learnings from that experience have been condensed into the company’s training processes, enshrined in its Operations Manual. Anne says she’s always had an “eco” bent, which is strongly reflected in the culture of the company. New cleaning teams get a rigorous introduction to that culture before they even start working for Eco Pro, with a major emphasis on how to clean better, healthier and more ethically. “We teach our cleaning teams that a proper green-cleaning programme is about protecting human health – theirs and that of the building occupants’ – as well as protecting the planet for future generations,” she says. “That means educating them on recycling, how to spot a green wash, how to make good decisions on procurement and how their actions can impact on the environment. At the end of the sessions we often see them becoming passionate about the whole eco concept – total converts.” Anne says the Albany-based company, which has 30 contracted cleaning teams, constantly updates the Operations Manual based on changes and innovation coming into the industry and encourages its teams to attend ITO courses and obtain the NZ Certificate in Cleaning to Level 2. It also provides on-the-job training, meets with all teams at least every six months, undertakes full site inductions for new teams on all sites, regularly reviews sites for hazards, emergency evacuation procedures and any changes to clients’ health and safety policies and procedures, and constantly tracks team performance – not just on the cleaning but all aspects of service delivery. “As a result – our teams are our success stories.” Dunedin-headquartered CrestClean has more than 600 franchise operators around New Zealand. Cleaning (CCC), specifically designed to meet the New Zealand cleaning industry needs. The course covers practical cleaning techniques, hygiene and industry-specific health and safety and environmental procedures. Grant says CrestClean’s training programme includes a strong focus on environmental procedures, such as waste-water disposal and proper use of microfibre cloths and mops, which reduces chemical use. “Our personnel are trained in our standard operating procedures, Safe Systems of Work, which have been designed to minimise environmental impact. “More importantly, it ensures consistency of our processes and cleaning techniques across the entire country. We can be sure that our environmental practices in Invercargill are the same as they are in Kaitaia. We can also deploy changes, like the introduction of a new chemical or process, very quickly.” New Zealand is well-served having two committed, resourceful, innovative and energetic cleaning services companies like CrestClean and Eco Pro setting the bar. We look forward to the continuing advances they will both bring to the sector. But there is still a lot of scope for other New Zealand cleaning organisations to make a greater commitment to environmentally preferable cleaning procedures and products, and good practice will only happen if training is also rigorous and well-informed. TRAINING
Engaging an ageing workforce Training and communication are key to engaging an ageing workforce, explains Daniel Balas, national account manager – Rubbermaid Commercial Products. Ask any environmental services manager about what keeps them up at night and the answer will most likely be: keeping great staff ! Employee engagement, safety and retention are top of mind for any business where turnover is high and staff prefer to simply leave rather than voice concerns to supervisors. In the cleaning sector, the work is physically demanding and employees are especially susceptible to repetitive strain injuries. It’s a sector where many workers are older than the average worker and speak English as a second language. To avoid injury, organisations are now investing in new, more ergonomic and safer technology that make a huge difference. But training about safe practices is fundamental so staff know how they can avoid injuring themselves and use equipment correctly. Investing in your staff means more than providing the basics. People feel valued when they are part of the organisation’s success and can see the efforts to provide the best tools, training, support and ongoing feedback. For older employees and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, it’s important to find ways to connect and communicate appropriately and effectively. When it comes to training, older employees are more likely to engage in a face-to-face education style, visuals with demonstrations or a hands-on approach. A digital training model may suit people in remote locations or people who are confident with a smartphone or digital device. The intangible advantage that comes with taking time to show someone how to operate a new piece of equipment or step them through a new process is priceless – people know they are valued and can see the investment being made to ensure they are up-to-speed. The commercial cleaning sector has an ageing workforce. Empowering an ageing workforce needs to be sensitive to the generational and cultural expectations of people who grew up before the digital age accelerated and technology became commonplace and second nature. Everyone learns differently, so training needs to be flexible to match the end user’s learning style. Not everyone is comfortable with a digital online style of training and communication. 18 INCLEANNZ May 2018
To fully support change, people need meaningful information, hands-on training, user manuals, quick reference guides, high touch point posters and time to adapt that aid the transition to new technology. A genuine and dedicated focus on developing confidence through appropriate and ongoing education is vital. Everyone needs time to become confident and comfortable with a new way of working. Whether it’s a new IT system or a new cleaning system, changing the way people work and the steps involved can be met with resistance and create challenges for an organisation in terms of productivity, costs and team morale. Reviewing programmes at regular intervals plays a critical part in staff training, they help you recognise and value your team members creating a culture of open communications. Outcomes of effective performance reviews are beneficial for both staff and business. Also, considering staff feedback, setting up goals and agreeing on outcomes will show organisation’s commitment to meet staff needs. Workforce acceptance and confidence is crucial otherwise the business goals of workforce productivity, increased cleaning efficacy, lower water usage and improved WHS outcomes cannot be fully realised. Providing all stakeholders with effective and meaningful training can be the difference between success and failure for a new system implementation. Education and training should be a top priority and an ongoing process, not a one-off ‘set and forget’ task. When staff are engaged, confident and comfortable with a process improvement, the facility will reap the rewards. www.rubbermaid.com.au

TRAINING
Leading the way in healthcare cleaning Health is a strategic sector for OCS New Zealand and requires a unique skillset from its cleaning staff. OCS New Zealand shares how it’s training and upskilling employees to be leaders in hospital environments. OCS New Zealand cleaners working for district health boards in Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa are being given the opportunity to gain a NZQA cleaning qualification at Level 2 and Level 3. As part of the qualification staff are trained in how to clean safely and prevent and control the spread of infections. OCS employee relations and capability manager, Anneke Roodt says cleaning in hospitals requires a different skill set. “Those visiting or receiving treatment in these environments are already vulnerable to the spread of infection, so making sure effective cleaning regimes are in place is key,” Roodt says. “As a hospital cleaner, what you do and how you do it, has an impact on those being delivered a service whether that be, colleagues, visitors, contractors, staff members and the cleaner themselves,” Roodt says. “The NZQA training takes place over nine months and all classroom sessions are facilitated by one of the training team members as well as assessed. “Supervisors are given the necessary training and guidance to verify certain aspects of training.” The programme is designed for cleaners in residential, health and domestic situations and aims to encourage safe work practices, and develop skills related to cleaning effectively and efficiently. Graduates will be able to: • Carry out generic cleaning duties. • Maintain safety of themselves, others, and the environment when performing cleaning services. • Communicate within the boundaries of their role. • Apply security procedures. • Apply infection control and contamination prevention procedures, under supervision. Cleaners are taught about preventing infection and contamination, and educated about bacteria, viruses and fungi and parasites. 20 INCLEANNZ May 2018
Roodt says making staff aware of the environment they’re working in is paramount, as well as making sure they’re safe at all times and using personal protective equipment (PPE).
Wairarapa case study The Wairarapa District Health Board is one of 20 DHBs around New Zealand responsible for providing health services for their region. Operating from Masterton, Wairarapa District Health Board (WrDHB) employs more than 700 staff. OCS has been providing services to WrDHB since 1999. Over this time, it has increased the service provision from a single service cleaning contract to a bundled service solution encompassing cleaning, orderlies, security, grounds, hygiene and pest control services. OCS general manager central region Clinton McKee, says cleaning in the health sector is a critical non-clinical function that must fulfil two primary objectives – creating a hygienic environment that prevents infection and facilitates patient recovery and presentation which reflects high standards of patient care. “At WrDHB we clean to Victorian Standards, the New Zealand DHB best practice, and undergo regular Top Cat auditing conducted by WrDHB. We have embraced this outcome based cleaning model and continue to successfully meet and exceed service levels,” McKee says. “Health is a strategic sector for OCS and we are committed to investing in innovative client focused solutions to meet the evolving demands of the hospital environment. In 2017 this included the use of high touch fluorescent audits and steam cleaning in high risk areas including isolation rooms and operating theatres.” McKee says the success of the relationship with WrDHB is underpinned by a strategic working partnership built on collaboration and cooperation – aligning closely with both organisations’ values. “At the executive level, our contract management team engages frequently and meaningfully with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders

to ensure we have an in-depth understanding of their evolving needs and expectations. On the ground, the OCS health team work as part of the wider WrDHB team to provide consistent, responsive and reliable services day in and day out. We work as part of a one team approach and at all levels share the WrDHB vision of ‘Well Wairarapa’.” OCS has established a mutually beneficial partnership that goes beyond a contractual service agreement, with the two companies supporting each other’s business goals, values and vision. WrDHB recognises OCS as an extended part of its team, and values the contribution they make to their business. This includes taking part in their internal processes, such as the OCS Contract Manager recently chairing the health and safety meeting, and sponsorship support for the staff Gold Awards. “At the core of our successful partnership with WrDHB are our people. Our OCS health team frequently receives praise and positive feedback from stakeholders including patients, visitors and WrDHB staff,” McKee says. “It is our people who allow WrDHB to focus on their core business, providing high quality healthcare to the residents of the Wairarapa region, confident that we will deliver a pristine environment.”
OCS NZ employs more than 3500 frontline cleaning staff in the areas of aviation, education, healthcare, retail and government, and all of those team members must complete the Excellence in Cleaning Programme. OCS has carefully designed the training programme to show new staff how to undertake regular tasks in a safe and efficient manner to achieve exceptional results. These methods are used in OCS operations throughout the world, and have helped position the company in a leader in the facilities and services industry. OCS NZ employee relations and capability manager, Anneke Roodt says it doesn’t matter at what level staff join the company, they have the opportunity to develop their skills and career if they wish. “Many senior managers in the company started out as cleaners, administrators or working in the stores. Cleaners and supervisors are without doubt the backbone of our company, and it is our aim to encourage staff to develop,” Roodt says “The provision of cleaning services is about maintaining a high standard of service to our clients, through well-qualified and motivated employees. Therefore, the training we provide is always being reviewed and assessed. Individual performance and potential is developed by a combination of programmes. “The 18 modules cover all relevant aspects of the cleaning role, and address topics including personal presentation, site security, emergency procedures, career development and basic skills training.” The training is delivered by OCS supervisors, who in turn have been trained to teach the modules. This approach ensures training is tailored to local requirements and can be delivered flexibly when required. Approximately a week after delivering a training module, the supervisor will complete a skills assessment to confirm competency. Roodt says everyday business actions can impact on the environment – often without anyone knowing. As an organisation committed to sustainability, OCS is focused not only on addressing the environmental impacts of their products and services but also on supporting their clients to meet their own environmental, social and economic sustainability goals. Rotorua branch manager Averill Baird says the programme not only upskills new staff members but also refreshes longer serving staff members about the processes. Baird has recently employed Martin Williamson, who is currently going through the training process. Williamson says the programme is comprehensive and easy to follow and understand. “For me, being new to the industry, it acts as a manual to keep as a reference,” Williamson says. “Overall it paints a valuable picture in learning all aspects of the job and how everything relates.” www.ocs.com/nz/ Martin Williamson completes the Excellence in Cleaning Programme

Strong
leadership will be a game-changer Adam Hodge, CEO of the Master Cleaners Training Institute and CrestClean’s national training manager, shares a difference perspective on the importance of training. Why do we train? Who do we train? What do we train? These questions have been addressed in numerous articles in the past, but I would like to approach the importance of training from a different perspective. I believe we should be asking some different questions: • What standard do we train to? • Companies that care about their people, customers and bottom line will train staff, but to what standard? • On completion of training are they competency assessed? • Is their underpinning knowledge of the processes and procedures employed demonstrated? • Do they realise the dangers to themselves and their customers of cross-contamination? • Can they prepare chemicals correctly and understand the information contained in the material safety data sheets? • Do they understand their responsibilities under health and safety regulations? • Do they realise how important it is to carry out tasks safely and competently? • Are staff rewarded for successfully completing training and assessment? Training should not just be concerned with upskilling and giving people the right tools for the job. It’s also about raising the standards and status of the commercial cleaning industry in New Zealand. One of the most common comments I hear about the industry from customers is, “you are all the same, you start with a hiss and a roar then standards drop and the problems begin”. 22 INCLEANNZ May 2018
Sandeep Singh with other CrestClean franchisees at Rotorua Race Course during a Master Cleaners Training Institute training session on widow cleaning.
To combat this perception, we as an industry need to set minimum standards for our training programmes and service delivery. We need standards that will raise the status of the industry in the eyes of our customers. We also need standards so that the New Zealand commercial cleaning industry is recognised by other OPEC countries as innovators in the industry rather than imitators. We need to be able to demonstrate the difference between the responsible companies in the industry and the cowboys, of which there are far too many. Setting minimum standards which the responsible companies within our industry sign up to and deliver is imperative. Only then will customers be able to differentiate between the cowboy operators and the professionals. I believe government should help to implement minimum standards of training and quality. But it’s also up to us in the industry to provide the leadership and drive to raise the standards so we can all reap the rewards that come with recognition. www.crestclean.co.nz

TRAINING
Addressing worker turnover There are many causes for the high rate of worker turnover in the cleaning industry. Robert Kravitz* spoke to several industry consultants on how training and communication can assist employee retention. According to a report released by worldwide market research firm IBISWorld in September 2017, the Austalian commercial cleaning industry can expect 2018 to be an excellent year. The report states the industry is expected to generate revenues of $US9 billion, which is a 2.6 per cent increase over 2017. Even better, it says revenues will likely increase by about this same amount for the next few years. Reasons the industry is doing so well, again according to the report, is a robust Australian economy and the fact that more and more businesses – such as property owners and managers – have decided to outsource cleaning instead of hiring their own crews. While this is all good news for cleaning contractors, there is something that could ‘throw a wrench into the works’, to use an old expression, and that is high worker turnover. The service sector, in general, has one of the highest worker turnover rates in Australia. As to cleaning, among the reasons for this are the following: • Low pay • Unusual hours (swing shift or night shift) • Physically stressful work • Poor treatment by supervisors • Lack of training “Among the many problems when there is high worker turnover in the cleaning industry is that it has a domino effect,” says Marc Ferguson, an international business representative for Kaivac. “One problem just leads to another.” What happens, he explains, is that many cleaning contractors do not view training as an investment with the potential for significant financial returns. Instead, the contractor sees it as an operating cost. They believe the worker will just leave in a few months anyway, so why spend the time and money. But without enough trained employees, the contractor becomes reluctant to take on new clients, so business stagnates. “Further, because the contractor does not spend the necessary time training the worker, it actually increases the chances workers will leave,” says Ferguson. “Soon customer dissatisfaction sets in. Poorly trained cleaning workers usually do not clean very well. So, even if the contractor decides to take on new clients, the old ones often start walking out the door.”
“Experts say employee retention comes down to better communication and accessing new ways to train today’s cleaning worker.”
24 INCLEANNZ May 2018
Addressing the challenges When we start looking for ways to address cleaning worker turnover, we see there are a lot of challenges. There is not much the contractor can do about the hours worked; most facilities are cleaned after regular business hours. Nor can we do much about the physical nature of the work. While some equipment can make cleaning less physically stressful, the fact is, we are always bending, stretching, picking up something, moving something, or otherwise using our bodies. However, there are two things we can address that can help us reduce worker turnover: • Improve the supervisor/worker relationship through open communication • Develop new ways of training that not only improve learning but also make workers feel proud of their job and their work.
Communication Many cleaning consultants agree that one of the reasons worker turnover is so high in the industry is poor working relationships with managers or supervisors. “Many times the supervisor may be very well versed in cleaning methods and techniques, but not that well versed in how to work with people,” says Ron Segura, who works with cleaning contractors internationally to help them streamline their business operations. “I’ve seen this over and over again.” As an example, several years ago Segura was hired by the Walt Disney Pictures & Television company to help improve the cleaning of their 750,000-square-foot facility, as well as improve morale for their cleaning workers. “There were tensions all over the place, and I realised as soon as I started, we had to address these before we could tackle the cleaning issues.” Segura describes one of the more imaginative ways he did this: “Every Thursday I would place a gray wooden lockbox that had a slot in the top in the lunchroom. I met with all the cleaning workers and their supervisor and informed them they could put any comments in the box and I would address the issues by the next week. I assured them that I was the only one who had the key to the gray box. The first month the box was full every Thursday. By the end of three months, the box was not needed.” Segura says many of the comments were accusations and issues that were not necessarily work-related. But whatever they were, they would be addressed individually or as a group. They were not ignored. “That box became a symbol of change,” he says. “We were communicating, worker morale improved, what turnover problems we had were reduced, and cleaning effectiveness improved as well.”
Training According to Ferguson, contractors have no choice but to invest time and resources into training. He believes that, when properly trained, cleaning workers are more likely to stay on the job, realise the importance of their work, help keep current clients happy, and open the door to new business opportunities. While he says he does not have a “magic gray wooden box” like Segura, he does have a number of suggestions to facilitate training. The first step is a pre-hire orientation. This would include the following actions: • Show workers what tasks they will be doing • Discuss the service needs of the facility
TRAINING
• Show workers what kinds of equipment they will be using • Introduce them to the supervisor they will be working with • Show them how they will be trained As for the training, Ferguson says learning models need to be updated, especially when hiring younger workers. “Reading a manual or even working one-on-one with another worker is just not going to cut it anymore. Younger people are tech savvy. They learn differently, and that means we must teach them differently.” And what does this look like? Ferguson says it’s just like when a young person gets a new computer, smartphone, or tablet. “They don’t read any manuals. If they don’t understand something, they go online, watch a video that helps explain the issue, and then jump right in using the machine. That’s how we have to teach cleaning today.” This is why at least one manufacturer in the professional cleaning industry have or are considering introducing electronic “tutors” that can be attached and accessed on the equipment the cleaning worker is using. Looking very similar to a tablet computer, among the benefits of such tutors according to Ferguson are the following: • Workers learn at their own pace • Workers can watch the videos as often as they want, when they want • Workers can watch a training segment, perform the related task, then watch the next segment, perform the next task, and so on
“Reading a manual or even working one-on-one with another worker is not going to cut it anymore. Younger people are tech savvy. They learn differently, and that means we must teach them differently.” • Some systems are designed to provide “best practices” cleaning training demonstrated by experts • They provide on-demand reinforcement or retraining. “What’s happening is the worker is learning by doing when they use the tutor,” Ferguson says. “This is how people learn today, and it is not only proving effective, it is very cost effective for the cleaning contractor as well.” While there are many causes for worker turnover, our experts say employee retention comes down to better communication and accessing new ways to train today’s cleaning worker. Taking these steps helps cleaning workers feel more professional, realise the value of their work, and stay on the job. And if they do leave, their replacement can be trained more efficiently and quickly. Robert Kravitz is a frequent writer for the cleaning industry. Customers the winner in Waiwhetu Distributors’ acquisition
OfficeMax New Zealand managing director Kevin Obern
In February 2018 OfficeMax New Zealand purchased Waiwhetu Distributors – one of the country’s most established cleaning supply and equipment firms. Campbell Gardiner spoke with OfficeMax New Zealand managing director Kevin Obern about the acquisition. Earlier this year, office supplies provider OfficeMax New Zealand acquired Waiwhetu Distributors – one of the country’s most established cleaning supply and equipment firms. At first glance, the two may seem like an odd match. But it’s a strategic deal that stands to benefit customers on both sides. OfficeMax New Zealand managing director Kevin Obern says the combined OfficeMax/Waiwhetu Distributors business will be in a strong position to provide 26 INCLEANNZ May 2018
customers with improved distribution, client support and access to new product ranges in an increasingly competitive market. From a customer perspective, OfficeMax customers will get access to a wider range of cleaning supplies and equipment. Waiwhetu Distributors’ customers will be able to access the latest in office products, including stationery, furniture, safety goods, and packaging and cafeteria supplies. Cleaning and hygiene products aren’t a new area for OfficeMax. They’ve formed part of the company’s product offering in one way or another for the better part of 20 years, and were already one of its fastest-growing category areas prior to the acquisition of Waiwhetu Distributors. What is new, says Obern, is that the deal “supercharges that part of our business”. “We have the best part of 50,000 customers across New Zealand. Being able to introduce a broader, more up-to-date cleaning offer is going to be beneficial for them. In the reverse sense, our expertise in office products,
logistics and distribution will benefit Waiwhetu’s customers,” he says. Signed, sealed and delivered in early February, the acquisition also positions OfficeMax to expand its presence in sectors it traditionally hasn’t had a strong foothold. “Our genesis was in the corporate and government sectors, and we have a strong education business. But we have less of a presence in hospitality than we’d like. Communications are underway letting Waiwhetu Distributors customers know about the acquisition. “Early in the piece, the previous owners and I had some conversations with Waiwhetu’s larger customers, and we’ve written to the Waiwhetu customer base telling them about the ownership change. There’s more customer communication going out in the not-too-distant future.” A new OfficeMax facilities catalogue is being prepared. This will feature Waiwhetu Distributors product range and be a useful sales, marketing and promotional tool, says Obern.
DISTRUBUTION
Waiwhetu Distributors has a long and established pedigree. Formed in Wellington in 1964, it has grown into a nationwide organisation with additional branches in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Hastings, Masterton and Christchurch. Waiwhetu Distributors has been owned by Savage Group Ltd for the past 10 years. Obern says it was an attractive acquisition for a number of reasons – not least of which was industry reputation. “They have great expertise in the cleaning business. Importantly, Waiwhetu have some expertise in things that we don’t – cleaning machinery, for example. This isn’t a product area we’ve had access to before. We see it as a significant growth opportunity.” Obern says OfficeMax has experienced good levels of growth over the last few years, but its traditional office products business has been put under some pressure since the advent of the digital age. Over the last seven or eight years the company has been changing its business to become a provider of business needs rather than just an office products provider.
Cleaning and hygiene equipment is one example of what Obern calls an “adjacent category” - that is, product categories in close proximity to OfficeMax’s core business. Spotting and going after adjacent categories has formed an important part of OfficeMax’s growth strategy for some years. “When we’re providing office products to customers, we consider what other areas we can consolidate into our offer. “Over the last eight years, the cleaning and hygiene space has been an area we’ve had some focus on,” says Obern. Around eight years ago OfficeMax entered the adjacent category of café equipment – selling coffee beans, coffee machines, cups, saucers and fixtures. It began experiencing double digit year-onyear growth in that part of its business. Obern says the cleaning and hygiene part of its business is growing at similar rates to what café did back then, and it’s only a matter of time before cleaning too becomes a highly significant part of OfficeMax’s business. www.waiwhetu.co.nz www.officemax.co.nz
“We have the best part of 50,000 customers across New Zealand. Being able to introduce a broader, more upto-date cleaning offer is going to be beneficial for them. In the reverse sense, our expertise in office products, logistics and distribution will benefit Waiwhetu’s customers.”

CARPET & RESTORATION
Report writing know-how Report writing is an essential component of business, however, it can expose you and your business to potential risks if not composed correctly. Paul Pritchard* shares some writing guidelines to follow. There are a number of situations that arise during the course of your business life which will require you to provide a written report or written response regarding a claim against you or a third party, perhaps even one of your competitors. Examples of this include: • Requests by members of the public or insurance companies to comment on or advise in respect of the workmanship or potential liability of one of your competitors; • Reports requested by customers, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers or their insurers on work carried out by you or others; • Responding to claims made against you by customers, insurers or others. In these situations there is a real danger that by responding in writing you are exposing yourself to legal liability in respect of your own workmanship, the opinions expressed by you (ostensibly “expert opinions”) on the workmanship of others, the quality of a particular product or service, or the cause of a particular problem or damage. Often requests for responses/reports in writing are put in such a way that you are led to believe that there is no serious implications from providing such letters. It is also often suggested that providing the report will be purely confidential. It is easy to respond spontaneously to such requests without giving proper consideration to the potential consequences of the words you are writing to yourself or others. It is also easy to stray from your own area of expertise and to suddenly be giving opinions on matters which you have neither the knowledge, nor experience or legal right to be commenting on. The reality is: • Whenever you provide a report on the workmanship or quality of services or products, someone is going to be pleased with your views and somebody else will be unhappy. For example, the customer may be happy but the supplier may not be or vice versa. Unless your expert opinion is backed up by the necessary understanding of all of the facts and technical issues, you may 28 INCLEANNZ May 2018
be exposed to liability. Such liability may extend to damages and costs resulting from reliance on your report. • Whenever you provide a report on your own workmanship and its quality, there is potential liability. Very often, because of not understanding the nature and extent of your potential liability, you expose yourself unnecessarily to potential claims. For these reasons, the following guidelines should always be applied in considering requests to provide reports or respond in writing: 1. Always give careful consideration to the consequences before agreeing to provide reports or written responses; 2. Be especially careful about providing opinions on the workmanship/products of competitors; 3. Be conscious of your own limitations in terms of technical knowledge, product knowledge and experience and the ability to properly investigate and present written material; 4. Never comment on matters outside of your expertise, for example; being a carpet cleaner does not necessarily make you an expert on carpet manufacturing/construction or textile fabrics. 5. Should you decide to provide such a report, ensure a proper and thorough investigation of all relevant issues has been carried out before responding; 6. Always seek the comment of a suitably qualified third party on the contents of your report (supplier, experienced tradesperson, lawyer) before sending such letters. It is easy to get tunnel vision and overlook a critical factor or potential for liability to you. You will have received requests from parties along the lines of “Can you just jot us a quick line confirming that …” It is rarely that simple and such requests should always trigger the warning bells. It is of concern that we have come across a number of so-called ‘reports’ which are superficial, poorly worded and in a number of cases, completely wrong in the conclusions which have been drawn. It is only a matter of time before someone is taken to task over the damage caused by such careless and unprofessional behaviour. In most cases we are operating at the outer limits of our training and expertise. If in doubt, seek advice from people in the industry who are qualified to assist or professionals or alternatively, refer the request to such persons. In many cases, the person requesting the report should be prepared to pay for a proper investigation and report by a suitably qualified industry professional. * Paul Pritchard is immediate past president of the Carpet Cleaners Association of New Zealand (CCANZ) www.carpetcleaners.org.nz

Ecolabel reassurance for cleaning industry customers
Hitch a ride to success with WoolSafe
Francesca Lipscombe, General Manager, ECNZ The cleaning industry uses a range of products which have an often-tough job to do, and as a result they may contain ingredients that may be harmful or damaging to the environment if not used, managed or disposed of correctly. Environmental Choice New Zealand (ECNZ) is New Zealand’s only Type 1 Ecolabel, which means it provides rigorous, verifiable, thirdparty-assessed evidence that products and services meet certain environmental standards through the life-cycle of their use. ECNZ administers a range of licences for cleaning products and services. In her presentation, Francesca will look at what the ecolabel covers, the challenges presented by cleaning products, the benefits to licensees, their customers and the community of having a licence, and the innovative work being done by cleaning companies and product developers to make their products and services environmentally preferable.

Expectation vs realities of cleaning hospital environments Francie Morgan, Infection Preventionist Nurse Specialist, Auckland Hospital environments require excellence in cleaning. There are many cleaning methodologies that claim to be the most suited. This presentation will highlight the many questions and dilemmas that face infection prevention and control health care professionals when deciding what types of methodology to adopt and how to measure their effectiveness.
Dr Agnes Zsednai, Managing Director, Woolsafe Striving for excellence and using the best products and practices is the hallmark of a cleaning company aiming to be market leader. This presentation highlights the independent product testing, certification, training programs and information resources that give invaluable guidance in an industry bursting with new technologies and innovative products. The WoolSafe Organisation’s cleaning chemical testing and certification program was developed in 1991 by industry experts drawing on years of research and experience. The program is constantly updated with new developments and now covers products for wool, other natural and synthetic fibres and products for environmentally preferable cleaning practices. Advanced training programs for carpet cleaners and a multitude of other learning opportunities for cleaners, carpet inspectors and others involved in this industry are available through the WoolSafe Academy in classrooms or online. The offered learning potential will be explained.

Introducing the Cleaning Activity Levels (CAL): An innovative model for specifying cleaning standards Bridget Gardner, Director, Fresh Green Clean The Cleaning Activity Levels (CAL) is an innovative way to document cleaning standards, and accurately measure the outcomes. Presenter Bridget Gardner, will be introducing CAL for the first time at CleanNZ. The CAL model was developed to address the problem of overlycomplex, prescriptive, and unrealistic cleaning specifications, and to prevent disputes about differing expectations and acceptable levels of clean. Bridget will demonstrate how you can use this radically simple model to: • Simplify the way we communicate cleaning duties, • Provide a consistent and objective auditing framework, • Focus the cleaner’s efforts more efficiently.

Unions in the workplace: Managing the processes, challenges & relationships to strike a successful partnership
AGE AD
Shankara Amurthalingam and Dinesh Sundararaj Auckland District Health Board
Unionised work environments within the cleaning industry are not uncommon. A critical component of success is the partnership forged together with unions to sustain a productive and engaged workforce. Unions may pose a number of challenges for businesses. In identifying and addressing these challenges and developing the working relationship we will share our experience, highlighting factors that trigger these challenges, and defining the pathway that can help support managers in creating a positive work environment for employees. We will look to dispel the negative notions and provide a framework that benefits businesses and flows through to clients.
11.30am-12.00pm
How to make the cleaning tender and contract a success Jack Crutzen, Director, PRISMA Facilities Management This presentation will focus on what both parties (FM and cleaning service providers) could learn and do to ensure that a cleaning tender is a success for both, to make the tender process more effective as well as creating a successful platform for the contract management phase. Jack will focus on some lessons learned in the NZ market and provide some thoughts for how facility managers, as well as cleaning service providers, can focus more on value than only on costs.
12.15pm-12.45pm
To wipe and not to swipe: that is the contaminating question Dr Greg Whiteley, Executive Chairman, Whiteley Corporation Wiping is one of the fundamental actions in any manual cleaning process. However, it is terrifying to find out that there is almost no published research on what wiping process works to clean a surface. Is the wiping action the most important aspect, or is it the wipe itself that does the work? If your wiping is more swiping, then the bugs on the surface will remain untouched. If your wiping is really smearing, then the bugs will simply spread out as a smudge on the surface or even jump onto the wipe and get a free ride on to the next surface and cross contamination is guaranteed. Cleaning is defined as ‘the removal of unwanted soil’ so if your wiping is just a swipe or a smear, then your cleaning process has failed. With fears of multi-drugresistant organisms and the failure of antibiotics, there has never been a more important time to reconsider your basic cleaning processes. This talk will: • Review the latest science on wiping, wipes, and cleaning methods, • Review the materials used in an effective cleaning process, • Challenge you to think about this fundamental cleaning process in a new way to truly improve cleanliness, reduce cleaning failure and minimise cross contamination. 1.30pm-2.00pm
Enhancing the leadership and management skills of your team Penny Barrett, Business Development Consultant, Careerforce Careerforce Business Development Consultant, Penny will discuss how Careerforce business programmes from levels 3 to 6 can enhance the administration, leadership and management skills of your team. Admin staff, first line managers and operational and strategic leaders are all vital to your business. They can all be assessed in competencies that improve your business performance and undertake learning to fill the gaps. As the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) for the cleaning sector, Careerforce also supports organisations with valuable programmes that allow cleaners to gain the skills and knowledge needed to pathway from a level 2 to a level 3 cleaning qualification (with strands in specialist cleaning and supervision). 2.30pm-3.00pm
Test and Tag – Making it work for you Mark Goldthrope, Founder, Metrotest Metrotest has been represented on Standards NZ EL36 committee, responsible for writing the ASNZS 3760 standard, commonly known as the Test and Tag standard, since 1998. Topics to be covered in this presentation include: What Test and Tag all about, why it’s necessary, how to gain income from Test and Tag without adding any costs to your business, as well as testing and tag traps including common mistakes, poor test equipment and testing practices and how to easily avoid test and tag fraud. Stand: 72 P LAB Cleaning Solutions - BIODECON the Australian and NZ distributor of Crystal Clean which is a commercial methamphetamine decontaminant based on a decontamination and disinfectant formula developed by Sandia National Laboratories under grant from the US Department of Energy. Crystal Clean’s powerful, patented technology enables remediators to apply the product in the form most appropriate for the surface being cleaned, whether that be as a liquid, foam or fog. This increases the ability of the user to reach all areas effectively and ensures proper coverage and saturation within a quick and efficient application. Coach8 sets sights on NZ Queensland-based IICRC approved School Coach8 is set to hold its first IICRC WRT course in Auckland, New Zealand in June. Started by Scott McFadzen, owner of Mackay Carpet Care and Restoration Services, in February 2018, Coach8 is a national training school located in Mackay, offering IICRC certification and training for the cleaning and restoration industry. Coach8 currently offers five courses at its Mackay-based facility as well as private on-site training. Courses include; Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT); Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT); Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT); Floor Care (Hard Surfaces) Technician (FCT); Leather Repair and Recolouring. More advanced, specialist drying and containment courses are set to be added to the facility’s program later this year, along with private leather cleaning training. “We want to offer as much as we possibly can in New Zealand,” McFadzen told INCLEAN NZ. “We are very excited to announce, that Coach8 has partnered up with The Restoration Group in New Zealand. It is fantastic news for us as they will be the host and provide the support we need in their marketplace. Our first course will be available in June, being WRT and AMRT in August. As soon as our specialist courses are released, they will be available in NZ too.” According to McFadzen, Coach8’s advantage in the market is that he, along with Coach8’s six instructors are still actively working in the restoration market. “Unlike other training facilities in Australia we’re still all working in restoration. Myself and our instructors are still actively out in the field, sharing our knowledge with the rest of the industry.” In addition to growing its staff and course programs, an interactive training facility is currently being built in Mackay, which will be operational later this year. “We’re looking to put a few more instructors on for some more advanced courses that we have coming up later this year. We’ll have some exciting things to announce from June. “The industry has been very supportive of us so far and so many people have told us that they are eager to train with us, which has been exciting, so we’re really keen to get started.” www.coach8.com.au 42 INCLEANNZ May 2018

Training makes good teams great In sport, as in business, you need to know you are putting your best team on the field every day, writes Mark Jones*. Great coaches of great teams have something in common and something incredibly unique about them. In common is the makeup of the team. Today in professional sport most teams have a similar level of skill to be tapped into and the same mix of idiosyncrasies to deal with on and off the field. But what is unique about great coaches is the ability to unleash the talent and take it to the next level to achieve amazing things. In sport, as in business, you need to know you are putting your best team on the field everyday.

managing remote teams we can get caught in the trap of putting all our time into those dragging their feet and forget to celebrate and recognise the star performers and their contribution. We can go further and take the time to articulate the behaviours that we see in a star performer and codify this in Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), skills, experience and background that leads to better performance. We can then take these qualities and build a profile that we recruit against for new employees. As well as this, we can also use these similar measures to provide performance feedback to existing team members to help the whole team understand what the business needs from them to achieve recognition and reward.
public recognition to what the employee will appreciate. Providing some sort of public acknowledgement is valuable for other team members. It helps them identify what is needed from them to obtain high performance standards. To avoid favouritism concerns be sure to acknowledge measures of performance that were used to identify the high achievement. For example, with freshOps we help managers identify staff that are on site, on time more often versus those that are late. Or we can observe which staff are completing all duties, every time. By monitoring time on site exactly we can help ensure clients are getting full value from their account with us.
Reward good behavior
There are those team members that drag their feet. The above monitoring can be used for identifying where time is not being used well on site and where coaching might help to refocus efforts. These team members can get objective, constructive feedback to show where they can readily improve efforts to deliver work of a suitable standard.
Rewarding the right behaviours has a two-fold effect. The star performers will welcome having their additional effort recognised. Be sure to acknowledge their extra effort in an appropriate way, not everyone will want their name up in lights. It pays to ensure you fit the degree of

California has adopted a new workplace safety and health regulation to prevent and reduce work-related injuries to housekeepers in the hotel and hospitality industry. This is the first ergonomic standard in the nation written specifically to protect hotel housekeepers. The new standard was approved on 9 March by the Office of Administrative Law and will become effective 1 July. “Hotel housekeepers have higher rates of acute and cumulative injuries compared to workers in other industries, and data shows those injuries have steadily increased,” said California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) chief Juliann Sum. “This regulation requires employers to identify, evaluate and correct housekeeping-related hazards with the involvement of housekeepers and their union representative.” The new regulation requires employers in the hotel and lodging industry to establish, implement and maintain an effective Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (MIPP). Hotel housekeepers frequently suffer musculoskeletal injuries from lifting mattresses, pulling linens, pushing heavy carts, and slipping, tripping or falling while cleaning bathrooms. The MIPP must include the following: • Procedures to identify and evaluate housekeeping hazards through worksite evaluations that include housekeeper input • Procedures to investigate musculoskeletal injuries to housekeepers • Methods to correct identified hazards • Training of employees and supervisors on safe practices and controls, and a process for early reporting of injuries to the employer.

MANAGEMENT
Making safety a habit The work process for many cleaners is deeply ingrained into their mind, therefore positivity and perseverance by management is vital to forming a new habit. Dr Denis Boulais* shares his approach to changing behaviour. No matter how robust a safety management system is, human behaviour can bypass almost any safety procedure. Habits make up 40 per cent of human behaviour, where most people think of a habit as brushing one’s teeth or applying a seat belt when driving a car. A seat belt is a safety feature of a car and it is amazing how over the years the use of a seat belt has become second nature. If only other aspects of safety could become second nature such as keeping a cleaning room tidy or not yanking electrical cords around furniture. Routine drives many daily actions conserving mental effort for issues that require more detailed consideration. The issue with routine, however, is that it causes cleaners to work on autopilot when they should be more aware of their surroundings and paying more attention. When something occurs out of the ordinary then a cleaner on autopilot may become involved in an incident. In many incident investigations over the years I have had the injured party admit with a smile that the incident was their fault, they were complacent and in autopilot mode. An example of this may include a cleaner tripping on the same set of stairs he/she has walked up and down for 10 years. Another example is a cleaner tripping on the ground level tines of a forklift parked in the same place it has been parked day after day. I remember a cleaner who walked up to a clearly marked zip hot water boiler and proceeded to wash her hands – she certainly paid the price for her complacency. My research demonstrates that 65.5 per cent of incidents in the cleaning industry have a human error base and 51.5 per cent of those resulted from moving without looking. Many people think of habits as negative (for example; biting one’s nails or overeating), however, habits can sometimes be very positive. An 48 INCLEANNZ May 2018
example of this may be automatically wearing eye protection whenever handling a chemical concentrate and not consciously thinking about it. Habits allow people to perform routine behaviours without needing to make small decisions each step of the way. One particular study identified it takes a minimum of 21 days to develop a new habit. The above mentioned research noted the term “minimum”, which infers that it takes a further period of time to reinforce the new behaviour before it becomes ingrained. From a physiological perspective habits are a roadmap the brain follows. Research has shown that when one habit is replaced by another habit the brain rewires its neural pathways of the old habit to accommodate the new habit. This may be compared to a change of procedure, if properly reinforced then the change shall eventually become ingrained. Many safety trainers use graphic videos (“impact training”) to shock trainees so they remember the dangers of various hazards and the need to control them and follow procedure. This tactic may correct the behaviour in the moment but it is likely to wear off before a new habit is formed. Research demonstrates positive thinking can increase a cleaner’s ability to develop personal skills and where the supervisor takes an encouragement based approach then the habit formation may be easier to achieve.
“Habits allow people to perform routine behaviours without needing to make small decisions each step of the way. One study identified it takes a minimum of 21 days to develop a new habit.”
MANAGEMENT
We all have the basic skills to put on a pair of gloves or bend at the knees during lifting. What may be missing is the ingrained patterns that assist one in engaging in such behaviours on a habitual basis. Building habits is of course easier said than done, it takes patience, persistence and hard work but the effort is well worth it. Providing the time, training, supervision and follow up to develop better habits can assist cleaners in staying on track. It is important to take a positive approach when building habits and provide positive reinforcement for good behaviours rather than punishing cleaners for their habitual behavioural slip ups. Research has shown effective motivation can be achieved by relating habits to the benefits of out of work life. For example, with outside edge trimming (in some cleaning contracts), the benefits of eye and ear protection will assist one at work as well as at home. Another example is the storage of chemicals – ideally one should not store lawn mower fuel near pool chlorine in the back yard shed – one should hence comply with safety rules regarding chemical storage at work. Motivation shall assist cleaners in forming new habits particularly if they have a clear understanding of why the habit will benefit them. Cleaners will all progress at different rates and possibly with several false starts. For many cleaners their work process is deeply ingrained into their mind so positivity and perseverance is vital to forming a new habit. By addressing, correcting and reinforcing daily habits then the difficult to control safety area of human error should be significantly improved in terms of injury reduction. * Dr Dennis Boulais is a national safety manager at Broadlex Services. www.broadlex.com.au

Introducing CAL
– Cleaning Activity Levels
Bridget Gardner introduces a new, simpler model for specifying and measuring cleaning standards. Since I began writing cleaning specifications 10 years ago I have tried to find simpler ways to present cleaning requirements, without compromising on accountability. I must have reviewed hundreds of cleaning guidelines, international standards and service specifications in this quest. Many such documents are moer than 50 pages long and you need a law degree to understand them. As English is a second language for many cleaners, I wanted to develop a less complicated way to communicate cleaning duties and measure performance standards. One night, at 2am to be precise, I awoke with a question, why do cleaning standards always focus on the type of soil to be removed? Shouldn’t a just-cleaned desk look the same regardless of whether it once held a coffee spill, dust or a paper clip? What if I just listed the surface elements, defined the degree of effort or level of activity that cleaners were to carry out on it, then described the outcome by way it will be measured? I grabbed a notebook and drew a diagram I called ‘Cleaning Activity Levels’ – affectionately known as CAL. Let me explain how it works and how it could radically improve the way cleaning standards are specified and measured.
Current limitations Cleaning standards usually contain a long list of cleaning duties, surfaces and frequencies, such as ‘clean toilets daily’ or ‘dust desks weekly’. Cleaning performance is measured against the type of soil to be removed from each surface once the task is completed: i.e. the desk shall be free of dust, debris, spillages and smears. To make sure nothing is missed, specifications can become wordy, prescriptive and result in impossible schedules. This causes arguments over minor omissions and undermines the cleaning operator’s skill and autonomy to assess their daily priorities. Performance-based cleaning contracts, conversely, are usually non-prescriptive and may even leave scheduling to the expertise of the cleaning company. Standards are based on cleanliness ratings, carried out via visual auditing. This approach can also be fraught with subjective and differing expectations about acceptable levels of clean. Hospitals have complex requirements and high standards of cleanliness to meet. For example, the 52 page Cleaning Standards 50 INCLEANNZ May 2018
for Victorian Health Facilities, 2011, covers five aspects that must be cross-referenced: 1. Building areas/elements/surface materials 2. Risk categories and priority areas 3. Cleaning outcomes defined via soil types to remove 4. Frequencies and timeframes 5. Auditing and scoring methodologies With all these approaches, the degree of cleanliness is being visually measured by rating what has been missed, not what has been done. This is neither consistent nor objective and it sets the cleaner up for failure.
A new approach Underpinning the CAL model are three core principles: 1. A surface cannot be accurately defined or measured as ‘partially clean’. It is either clean or unclean. 2. The cleaning outcome is determined by the cleaning process: the method, the degree of effort and the frequency. 3. Cleaning standards must be defined by how cleanliness is to be measured. The following diagram illustrates how the CAL model is applied to cleaning specifications:
Cleaning Standards Cleaning Outcomes
Clean HTP’s Spot clean
Measuring Methods
Full clean Building Elements
Deep clean Restore
Frequencies
Cleaning Scope CAL has adopted common cleaning terms to describe the level of cleaning activity. The cleaning standards then describe the required outcome, and the most accurate, relevant and viable methods of measuring performance, per level. This is shown in the upper part of the CAL diagram and listed in the table to the right.
MANAGEMENT

Restore
The lustre and/or integrity of the surface has been fully and evenly restored
• Direct observation • Before and after photos
Applying CAL to cleaning standards CAL dramatically simplifies the way cleaning specifications are written, because the same outcome per level of activity can be applied to all surfaces, soft or hard. For example, if the cleaner is required to spot clean a carpet to remove ‘isolated, recent, highly visible and easily removable marks, debris and spillages’, then it is their responsibility to identify the recent spots and to decide how best to remove them. This could be vacuuming up a piece of lint and/or damp blotting a coffee spill. The CAL model can also be used to structure the organisations requirements per specific building area, surface type (‘elements’), materials, risk priorities, hygiene, safety and sustainability initiatives. In the lower half of the diagram, CAL is applied to the scope of works or work schedules. For each area/building element, the required cleaning levels and how frequently they are carried out, can be specified in a simple matrix. This can be varied according to the level of risk, usage, and of course, budget.
Benefits One of the key benefits of CAL is that it respects and improves the cleaner’s skill, which could help to drive a renewed interest in training qualifications. It is also very easy to apply efficiencies and to integrate it with maintenance information systems (MIS). The CAL model has the potential to: • Simplify the way we communicate cleaning duties, • Provide a consistent and objective auditing framework, • Focus the cleaner’s efforts more efficiently, and • Give cleaners more autonomy and better cleaning skills. • Fresh Green Clean would be interested in talking with organisations willing to pilot this completely innovative approach to setting cleaning standards. * Bridget Gardner is director of Fresh Green Clean. Bridget will be presenting at a paper on CAL at CleanNZ Expo. Contact Bridget on bridget@freshgreenclean.com.au au.linkedin.com/pub/bridget-gardner/15/597/9a5/ www.freshgreenclean.com.au

The Nilfisk Liberty A50 has been recognised for its innovation and design
Autonomous cleaning likely to make up 40pc of market, Nilfsik study finds 2017 estimates from Nilfisk puts the addressable market for autonomous cleaning at 40 per cent of the total professional cleaning equipment market. A survey conducted by Nilfisk during ISSA 2017 and CMS 2017, highlighted the top three benefits of autonomous cleaning being: Productivity: High-volume, repetitive tasks are time-consuming. The new generation of autonomous machines can perform these tasks at the same speed as humans, for many hours at a time, with no
drop-in efficiency. They can also work at any time of the day. Quality: One key benefit of an autonomous machine is consistency: it will do what you tell it to, repeatedly, until you tell it to stop, with little or no variation in quality. Safety: Autonomous cleaning can be allocated to dirty or dangerous tasks, especially in factory environments. Advanced sensors mean that they can sense and avoid hazards. Staff can be allocated to jobs with less risk. Autonomous cleaning solutions are a
growing trend, and we are starting to see autonomous cleaning having an impact far beyond just factories. The productivity and efficiency benefits are reaching retail stores, offices, hospitals and schools, to name a few. Previous generations of autonomous machines often disappointed and didn’t realise their true potential. The machines that are being developed today are vastly different– they are intelligent, able to learn, adapt and make decisions for themselves. www.nilfisk.com
Safety leadership the theme at OCS NZ supplier forum Safety leadership and wanting workers to get home safe and well was the theme for the OCS NZ supplier forum held in Auckland. More than 30 suppliers heard from Dr Hillary Bennett, a psychologist and director of Leading Safety, a consultancy specialising in safety leadership, safety culture and workplace health and safety. According to Bennett, it’s up to company leaders to challenge their own thinking around health and safety, and that the mind-set of both management and frontline staff is critical for success. “Leaders need to be much more explicit about ‘why’ they commit to health and safety,” said Bennett. “We want people to be engaged around health and safety so that they commit to it in practice because they ‘get it’. The challenge is doing this consistently on a day to day basis.” Bennett added it is important to engage with the frontline leaders, who in turn influence all of those around them. “We need to give people the opportunity to talk; most of the time we talk to them, as opposed to them talking to each other.” Bennett also said there are a number of health and safety drivers for organisations, including legislation, the current market, reputation, sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

New standard of clean from Sebo NZ The Evolution range of upright vacuum cleaners from Sebo has been described by the company as a significant step forward in professional vacuum cleaner design. Designed and manufactured in Germany, the upright vacuum cleaners have a number of design features that make cleaning tasks easier, save time and reduce costs related to machine service and maintenance. The light handle weight ensures easy control and smooth manoeuvrability for longer work periods. The handy wand and integrated suction hose are immediately ready to clean hard-to-reach areas or typical above-the-floor items, such as furniture. Full-size crevice and upholstery nozzles are neatly and conveniently stored on the back of the machine.
With no electrical connections or wiring in the handle or main body of the machine, repairs and maintenance is kept to an absolute minimum. Sebo said it created the Evolution range based on the requirements of professional buyers and users. “We established product durability, usability and ease of maintenance as the developmental priorities from the start to create a simple machine that is completely focused on the essentials: robust; easy to use; economical; simple to maintain, and ultra-reliable.” Sebo Evolution vacuum cleaners are available in New Zealand in 370 and 470 head widths. www.sebo.co.nz
Dustpan system welcomed by NZ cleaning supervisors
Diversey releases silent vacuum range
Recently introduced to the New Zealand market, the Filmop Baggy dustpan system from Premier Hygiene assists with the collection of solid and semi-liquid waste on hard surfaces. Premier Hygiene sales manager Paul Wilde said the company has received a lot of interest from cleaning supervisors for this product because it provides an effective solution for the kind of cleaning tasks cleaners hate. “Cleaning up bodily fluids, such as vomit, after events like festivals and sports games is a gruesome task, and is often carried out using paper towels and gloves. Thanks to the rubber blade on the Filmop Baggy dustpan system, cleaners can slide the offending mess into the pan and bag, and dispose of it appropriately.” Wilde said. The Filmop Baggy provides fast and efficient collection of wet and dry spills and debris from hard floor surfaces. Simply attach the bag of your choice to the pan and sweep the mess into the bag. The bag can then be removed and disposed of. The pan is easy to clean and sanitise, and the floor squeegee features a rubber blade, which cleans up dirt and fine sand. The engineered ergonomic handle eases wrist strain and allows for easy transportation on the workstation. The system is ideal for use in healthcare facilities, public buildings and stadiums.
Diversey has launched the TASKI Aero tub vacuum cleaner range to the professional cleaning market in Australia and New Zealand. Combining patented ultra-silent, whisper technology with an advanced selection of features, the vacuum is designed to deliver a high standard of cleaning quality and operational efficiency. The new range consists of two streamlined models which address the requirements of frequent professional cleaning at any time of day and in any environment, significantly increasing the productivity for building service, hospitality and healthcare. Extremely reliable, they both have a 585W state-of-the-art vacuum motor which provides the same cleaning performance as comparable vacuums with 1000W of power or more. The power is delivered via an airflow system with patented “whisper” technology which makes the vacuums exceptionally quiet to operate at any time of the day or night. “The TASKI Aero is a market leader in ergonomic design, offering a number of features such as a foot pedal switch and dust bag indicator,” said the marketer. “The clever design ensures replacing parts, such as cables and filters, is quick and easy, and can be carried out by the user in seconds without the need for any tools. “The compact design also makes it efficient for storage in small spaces or cupboards, and the integrated handle makes it very easy to carry, while doubling as a simple and convenient manual cable tidy.”

Jasol introduces Caskade floor care products to range Jasol has added Caskade floor care products to its range of floor care cleaning solutions. The range has been specifically formulated to provide improved durability for high traffic areas, plus improved drying times, increasing overall application effectiveness. “Caskade products protect flooring with a sacrificial layer that not only prevents foot traffic damage, staining and discolouration, but will also provide ease of cleaning with efficiency improvements. Daily sweeping and cleaning will become more effective and safer,” the company said. “Customers are influenced by the appearance and cleanliness of a floor, plus research shows that there is a correlation of increased retail sales associated with shiny floors. Therefore, the overall appearance and image of a floor is key to success.” www.jasol.co.nz

Careerforce to showcase new programs at CleanNZ Expo Careerforce, the industry training organisation for the cleaning sector, will be showcasing its new business qualification programs at CleanNZ Expo. Careerforce supports employers to implement workplace-based training so staff can gain nationally-recognised cleaning qualifications. Record numbers of trainees have been awarded a New Zealand cleaning qualification since the programs were launched in 2015 and 2016. Careerforce business development consultant, Penny Barrett, says the cleaning qualifications recognise a level of skill that emphasises the important role cleaning staff play. “These programs allow cleaners to gain the skills and knowledge needed to become qualified,” she said. “Staff can pursue a clear career pathway from a level 2 to a level 3 cleaning qualification (with the option to complete specialist cleaning and supervision strands). The additional healthcare facilities cleaning option builds on the core skills and knowledge required for cleaning in health care facilities.” There are several professional development opportunities for team leaders and supervisors within the cleaning industry, particularly with the creation of Careerforce’s supervisory level 3 strand. This qualification is ideal for experienced cleaners who want to gain the valuable skills and knowledge to be able to lead a team of cleaners. Often, the focus is just on training for staff at levels 2 and 3, but professional development for administrative and senior employees is just as important. An efficient and effective business relies on leaders and managers being armed with the relevant skills and competencies to improve, enhance and add value to the organisation. Developing exceptional leadership can help build a stronger and resilient organisation. Admin staff, first line managers and operational and strategic leaders are all vital to a business. Now personnel at all these levels can be assessed in competencies that improve business performance and undertake learning to fill the gaps. Barrett has a special interest in the cleaning sector and will be presenting these new business qualification programs at CleanNZ.
“It’s about supporting employers and their teams to achieve their objectives through work-based learning. We want to enable them in making the right decisions for their organisations through modern business practice tools and strategies,” said Barrett. Careerforce is also a sponsor of the CleanNZ CleanSweep Awards. “We really are proud to be supporting the CleanSweep Awards in 2018,” said Careerforce CEO, Ray Lind. “We wish to recognise employers who have a strong training culture and are committed to upskilling their staff. “These awards recognise organisations who invest in education and training to maintain consistently high-quality standards. “We’re pleased to be able to support the industry and look forward to meeting employers at the awards and expo event.” Visitors to the Careerforce stand at the expo will have an opportunity to learn about the full range of cleaning and business qualifications. The Careerforce team will explain how having trained, qualified and recognised cleaners can contribute to an organisation’s productivity and efficiency. Visitors who are new to Careerforce supported training can also find out how their organisation can get started. www.careerforce.org.nz

The T350 stand-on scrubber
The latest addition to the company’s lineup of scrubber-dryers is available with Tennant exclusive technologies like touch screen ProPanel, ec-H20NanoClean, Smart-Fill (automatic battery watering) and IRIS to help businesses decrease the rising cost of cleaning. The T350 stand-on unit combines speed, agility and cleaning performance to allow cleaning professionals to get the job done quickly and easily. It is the ideal cleaning workhorse for schools, supermarkets, hospitals through to aged care facilities and public spaces. Ultra-compact in its footprint means it’s highly manoeuvrable as it easily navigates tight spaces with minimal disturbance while the speed of the machine covers a large area of the floor quickly. The stand-on design of the T350 gives the operator a clear view of their surroundings and the ability to easily get on and off the machine. Daytime cleaning applications are made possible with the T350’s quiet-mode, which reduces machine noise levels to as low as 59.7 dBA. Tennant’s detergent free ec-H20 NanoClean technology reduces the impact of cleaning operations on the environment in seven key categories when compared to conventional packaged daily-use cleaning chemicals. Water consumption is reduced by up to 70 per cent and disposal of cleaning agents into the waste stream is significantly minimised. “Tennant Company invests 3 per cent of our global revenue each year into innovation,” said Adam Esho, Tennant national sales manager. “The T350 justifies this investment and marks our entry in the stand-on scrubber category. characteristics which enable the restoration technician to achieve reliable results every time.” Both solutions have been independently evaluated in accordance with BS EN 1650:2008 (mould eradication challenge), TGA Test: hospital grade disinfectant contaminated conditions and the AOAC hard surface carrier test. “Biosan provides outstanding low-cost dilution rates and excellent cleaning function in disaster restoration scenarios. The beauty of Percide is the way it entirely removes stains caused by the mould and brightens the surface being treated. It also fizzes when it contacts mould, which provides an excellent visual guide.” www.cleaningsystems.co.nz
Proquip NZ adds floor scrubber to Numatic range Proquip NZ has launched the TGB8572 floor scrubber to the company’s Numatic range of floor scrubber driers. Proquip NZ marketing manager Kerry Boon said: “Designed to clean large areas, the TGB8572 boasts a five hour run time and a 72 cm scrubbing path. This combination produces a 12,600 square metre productivity rate on one charge. “It also features an 85 litre water capacity, meaning cleaners can spend less time emptying and refilling the tank and finish cleaning tasks sooner.” Ease of use and maintenance is at the heart of the design for the 8572, adds Boon. The simple controls and colour coded components guide the operator through use, and a flip hinge tank allows for quick and easy access to the GelTec maintenance free batteries. “The TGB is the perfect fit for a medium size site that needs a reliable and easy to use scrubber.” www.proquipnz.co.nz The TGB8572

More than cleaning:
TPS keeps Eden Park humming
Providing innovative facility solutions for New Zealand’s largest and most iconic stadium is all in a day’s work for Total Property Services (TPS).
In addition to the event and regular maintenance cleaning, TPS provides carpet cleaning, water blasting and height access services. “They’re very responsive to anything and I’m very impressed with their service and thoroughness,” says Arthur.
TPS provides facility maintenance services to clients across the country. They have developed an integrated cleaning and maintenance programme to suit the unique needs of Auckland’s Eden Park, which operates functions through the week as well as regular live sporting events.
Innovation and sustainability in mind
Event support Of the tens of thousands of sports fans that descend on Auckland’s Eden Park to watch live sport, few would spare a thought for those working behind the scenes emptying the rubbish and recycling bins, topping up the toilet paper and responding to the unexpected. But that’s the way TPS wants it to be. Eden Park Facilities Manager Arthur McKay says their events and functions can bring in anywhere between 5,000 and 48,000 people. “I’m impressed by the way TPS can mobilise so many people for these events.” Before a major event, up to 40 TPS staff members clean every corner of the stadium – including suites, lounges and public areas – and replenish consumables such as toilet paper, soap and hand towels. During events, TPS staff ‘patrol clean’, tidying spills and topping up consumables to ensure the event runs smoothly. Then, afterwards, they bring in community organisations to assist with the clean up. “It’s quite involved and quite a challenge and they do it very well,” says Arthur. Some notable events and functions TPS has recently worked on include the 2017 British and Irish Lions Tour, Auckland’s inaugural day-night cricket test, numerous international rugby and cricket test matches and former All Black Dylan Mika’s funeral.
Delivering high quality and innovative services is all part of the TPS package. This is evident in the market leading, eco-friendly products used in their cleaning services, the sustainable approach to rubbish disposal, and the leading-edge online tools available for clients to track productivity and communicate efficiently with TPS. When Eden Park approached TPS with an idea to run a zipline across the field, the TPS Phase 1 team led by Thomas Croft sprang into action. The project involves the design and installation of a 75-metre cable between the North and South stands for punters to ‘fly’ across the stadium, and a rooftop platform for walking tours. “It’s an inspirational project but it is part and parcel of what we do day in and day out,” says Thomas. www.tps.co.nz
Integrated and specialised solutions Arthur say TPS is Eden Park’s “one stop shop” in helping cover the stadium’s vast facility requirements. INCLEANNZ May 2018 59
