Creativity and being a leader is not watching what others are doing but leading through ingenuity and intention. To lead is also to be fearless, not just in terms of your own self-belief but becoming immune to the noise and disruption from those around you that don’t suit your path. We often talk about fearlessness but, more appropriately, what we mean is self-confidence. When we have confidence, not only our actions but our thoughts level up. Finding it can be hard when you see a wall of judgement around you, but the risk is all part of finding your feet and family not just in life but in hair or your professional life too. Finding your people is a process and just as much about letting go of things that are holding you back. It can be hard – especially if it’s something that has supported you to a point, it doesn’t mean it’s forever or still serves you. This leads me to boundaries. I talked about setting these and having a better set of boundaries for the year ahead early in 2023 but, alas, here we are again, with the same impending schedule, stress and general feeling of always being pulled in directions away from what is defined as balance. I know many of you hear me.
With this in mind I think it’s also time we assessed our attitudes towards boundaries and creating a meaningful and long-term plan, not an abrupt or reactive one. I’m all for setting boundaries but very passionate about being consciously minded and aware of the feelings of others and overall mental health in the process. Setting boundaries is not a hall pass to avoid giving back to others or openly communicating, nor an excuse for poor behaviour or a lack of contact or respect. Being unkind to others while having selfish intentions is not boundary setting. You aren’t achieving a better state of being if you’re not holding up your obligations to those around you that are also there for you.

Our industry relies often on the same people to put themselves out there; to educate, inspire and improve opportunities and knowledge while many sit back, judge and be critical. We are all part of this industry and the bigger picture and thus it’s important for us all to contribute. Taking a step back, creating boundaries or avoiding some of the extra effort that it takes to selflessly do things for the greater good, others or the industry is not progress. While some of these commitments may not be for our bottom line, it’s all part of us working together and not exhausting the industry and robbing it of its future growth.
With a regular deadline at INSTYLE we are always looking to the future and our first quarterly print edition for ‘24 has a whole new design and includes some of our education leaders who have committed to showcasing what they have in-store for our annual education showcase. Thank you for showing your support to the wider industry and us in the process – we understand putting yourself out there for education takes a significant time and money investment, but it also takes consistency.
On the education front, Hair Festival tickets are selling faster than in 2023 and our program continues to fill up well ahead of our position at this same time in 2023. We are excited for an even more immeasurably fun and exciting event for 2024, on the new date of June 30 and July 1, and at the new venue of Sydney's ICC. You’re all part of this bigger picture so step up and put yourself, your brand, your ideas out there because without you we our industry is only half as special as it is. We aren’t a corporate conglomerate, we are community of passionate creatives, so if we start behaving with a corporate mentality and be led purely by such decisions or focus, we too will lose the passion to make a difference. We need the confidence to not care what others think, to put overall growth and development before your own needs, to be consistent with how you show up and not just what we feel like at the time. This confidence is what it takes to succeed. Just ask those who have done it. If they worried about the opinions and strategies of large organisations alone or the sheep among us, do you think they would be where they are today?
To be selfless is also to be rewarded and it’s a process that we all need to start before we should expect to see any long-term results.
Jump on board this year and be as involved as you can. The most exciting times of the year are almost here.

BROOKS & BROOKS LAUNCH NEW UK SALON
Global hairdressing pioneers Sally and Jamie Brooks of Brooks & Brooks have launched their new salon space, moving to a new location after 21 years. Paving the way in trending, editorial and fashion forward hair, the duo overhauled a former Covent Garden salon in a town house setting, while still keeping the heritage style in an elegant staircase, fireplaces and other aesthetic features.
“We wanted to create a relaxed space where our clients and our team can relax in a contemporary setting with a homely feel, and what better than a town house to create this ambience?” Sally said. “The salon really is a home where each detail is considered; it has points of interest in every corner that the client sees, feels and talks about, but at the same time gives the team a relaxed uncomplicated way of working.”
The team worked with their long-standing designer who understands the Brooks & Brooks identity, imbuing the space with efficient features in a minimalist design. Think details such as suspended metal workstations with plug sockets for clients and easily accessible sockets for hairdressers, handy storage space and hanging space for both kit bags and clients’ bags, organised structures for mirrors and electrical appliances, draws to hold daily necessities and an ideally fit trolly unit at every station. A Brooks & Brooks client designed the lighting, with an aesthetic that saw the unique lighting system suspended from black metal work to protect the old heritage structure.
“Working with the heritage of the building allows us to keep parts like the floor that was stripped back and restained, whilst retaining the character and working with natural woods throughout the workstations and other areas of the salon keeps the feel real,” Sally shared.

FRANCAPELLI HAIRDRESSING SALON CELEBRATES 45 YEARS
Francapelli Hairdressing Salon in Hawthorn, Melbourne, has been a stalwart of the community that has operated since 1979, as started by owners Frank and Anna Sobrio and with over 150 years of combined experience from the team. Decades on, a new relationship with Revlon Professional and a clientfirst approach, now to third-generation clients, has seen it through 45 years of success.
“We have always put our clients first at Francapelli. The whole team is committed to client-based excellence which has engendered the longlasting client relationships we have built over the years. Our team comprises skilled hairdressers, each with their own area of specialisation. which enables us to meet the unique needs of all clients, regardless of the complexity of their requests,” the salon said. “We’re also very much committed to, and driven by, the incredible industry that we’re so proud to be part of. Francapelli has always loved being part of something bigger, continuing to learn and translate industry trends to the salon floor, and that passion is definitely part of our success.”
The salon is a community-based business that thrives solely due to word of mouth with no advertising needed. Personal, family-style touches, such as the salon dog Lulu, affectionately described as the “canine receptionist”, add to the generational devotion for the salon brand, while evolving services and approaches to client care help to drive the salon into its current success. A new relationship with Revlon Professional adds to that continued innovation and ideally caters to client needs, while also staying in line with Francapelli’s salon identity.
“Revlon Professional’s vision of ‘create boldly, live boldly’ is a perfect match for our salon philosophy; it’s what we do every day. The products perform, and the brand is renowned for its commitment to excellence, just like we are. The Revlon Professional array of vibrant colour ranges is extensive, they offer high-performing products and use cutting-edge formulas. All of that empowers us to provide an unparalleled salon experience.” www.francapellisalon.com.au

AURICHE HAIR CARE LAUNCHES IN BONDI
An innovative range of hair care for self-tanners has debuted into the market at a breakfast event at Bondi’s iconic Icebergs restaurant. Titled Auriche, the technology was created with ground-breaking university research to protect golden hair from the damaging effects of tanning products.
As founded by Lana Kelly, Lana’s own experience as a skin cancer survivor and fake tan enthusiast personally led her to fill this necessary gap in the market.
“After a decade of regular fake tanning, I noticed persistent discolouration around my blonde hairline and realised that weekly spray tans were the culprit. Forced to choose between my hair and my skin was an impossible decision so I decided to find a solution that meant I wouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other,” Lana said. Lana worked with chemists through COVID to create world-first formulas, after testing a collection of commercially available products and not finding a satisfactory solution. These formulas have been refined since with clinical tests and trials, including an experiment in conjunction with the University of NSW, which showed that fake tan could be as damaging to hair as bleach.
The entire Auriche range is scientifically formulated, cruelty-free, Australian-made and comes in unique recycledplastic packaging. The technology works under four pillars – protect, cleanse, restore and repair.
“After I had my first two skin cancers removed at 16, and having watched two of my four sisters go through skin cancer treatment, sun tanning isn’t an option – it can be a death sentence for me. Because I have had early-stage melanoma, I have a high chance of developing melanoma again, and have had nearly 100 spots removed to prevent skin cancer. I am covered in spots and scars and fake tan is the only thing that makes me feel comfortable in my skin,” Lana said.
“With some 17,000 Australians expected to be diagnosed with melanoma this year – that’s a diagnosis every 30 minutes – the only safe tan is fake tan. Auriche allows Australians to enjoy a healthy glow year-round without ever having to worry about the impact of regular fake tanning or the dangers of the sun.” www.auriche.com

2023 BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS ANNOUNCE WINNERS
The 39th iteration of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, named their 2023 winners, with a gala event held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London on November 27. The awards honoured 19 winners and congregated 1400 industry members in British hair’s night of nights.
Compered by celebrity host Katherine Ryan, who was joined by Hairdressers Journal International’s Executive Director, Jayne Lewis-Orr, and Julian Crane, General Manager for Henkel Consumer Brands Hair Professional UK & Ireland, on stage, the event showcased dazzling hair fashion, treated guests to a musical performance by Björn Again and awarded winners across ten regional categories and nine specialist awards. Categories range from Afro to Men’s, Session and Newcomer, as judged anonymously by over 100 leading hairdressers, including celebrity hairdressers, Hall of Fame members, previous winners and more.
The pinnacle award, British Hairdresser of the Year, was won by Cos Sakkas, Creative Director at TONI&GUY, for the second year running, adding to his illustrious mantle as a decorated and leading global talent.
“To be nominated for this award is an incredible honour and to win it is just unbelievable, to win twice is completely overwhelming,” he said. “Without my TONI&GUY family it just would not happen. This award isn’t for me, it’s for us. This year it is TONI&GUY’s 60th anniversary when Toni, Guy, Bruno and Anthony revolutionised hairdressing and I’ve been privileged to work with them for 30 years. The standard of hairdressing in this country is constantly improving and I’m honoured that the judges have seen the passion and dedication I have for my work. I hope that this moment inspires others to pursue their dreams – if I can do it, then so can they!”
Congratulations to all the winners, listed on Styleicons.
KITOMBA LAUNCH EXCLUSIVE INTEGRATION WITH REACH.AI
Kitomba Salon and Spa Software has launched an exclusive integration with REACH.ai in Australia, which allows salons to utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to automate their client communications, fill gaps in their appointment books and elevate their online presence.
“Marketing is so important for client retention and generating bookings, but it’s often not given the attention it deserves due to lack of time. REACH.ai solves this problem beautifully, and many of our customers using this integration are seeing amazing results in a short time—one added over a thousand dollars in bookings in a week! We believe this integration is a real game changer for our industry,” shared Kitomba Salon and Spa Software General Manager, Alyssa Dowsett. The technology has been integrated with Kitomba Online Booking and works to automate marketing and booking communications with clients by identifying gaps in the appointment book and sending highly personalised messages to clients who best suit those spots, in order to fill last minute cancellations and add bookings to quieter times. The technology also emails clients to provide feedback after appointments, feeding negative reviews back to the salon to address, and inviting positive reviewers to share their experience online in order to better SEO and attain new clients.
“We created REACH.ai because we realised there are so many time-consuming and manual tasks related to marketing and communicating with clients that salon owners have to manage on a daily basis, which can be automated using A.I.,” said Patrick Blickman, Co-Founder and CEO of REACH.ai. “We’ve been operating in countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States for many years, so partnering with Kitomba has created an extremely exciting opportunity for us to help support salons and spas in New Zealand and Australia.”
Kitomba customers can trial REACH.ai free for 30 days. The technology necessitates only five minutes to activate and no training to use, and has no fixed contracts or commitment periods.

HAIR SHOTS 2 THE WORLD ANNOUNCES TSIKNARIS HAIR AND BESWICK-ENGLISH AS 2023 COVER WINNERS
Hair Shots 2 The World has named their 2023 cover winners, usually announced as the collection that earned the most covers in the calendar year. In 2023, the organisation boasted images published across 26 covers in a diverse collection of aesthetic offerings.
This year, this has resulted in a tie between Tsiknaris Hair and the collaborative team of Bernadette Beswick and Stevie English, who secured three covers each across various collections, in a first for the competition. Runners up with two covers each are 2023 AHIA Australian Hairdresser of the Year Justin Pace of Co and Pace in Brisbane, Mikelah-Jayde Riley of Mikelah-Jayde Studio in Waikiki WA and Evie Golding of Rokstar Salon in Brisbane, showing the success of talents both established and emerging, with Evie securing a cover with her first ever collection.
“The award title has been changed in line with the biggest achievements of the year,” Hair Shots 2 The World chief, Leanne Cutler said. “In most years, there can be one obvious cover choice for editors or a collection with six strong, suitable cover images that brings home the title, but not this time.” www.hairshots2theworld.com

GOLDWELL UNVEIL MIDNIGHT BERRY AS COLOR OF THE YEAR
Goldwell have once again partnered with trend agencies and colour experts to debut their official Color of the Year for 2024, launched as MIDNIGHT BERRY.
The shade is a highly saturated purple tone with deep blues that is rich, complex and on trend. The hue has been created to inspire both hairdressers and clients in their artistic vision. The colour boasts an infusion of blue undertones and hints of ultraviolet, as well as tinted blacks.
“Drawing inspiration from the enchanting, jewel-tone colours found in nature, MIDNIGHT BERRY captures the essence of elegance, allure and a growing desire for glamour,” said Jane Boddy, Global Colour Expert. “Its deep, multidimensional hue consists of an inner core of darkness and a rebellious spirit, evoking a sense of mystery and sophistication.”
“MIDNIGHT BERRY is a shade that embodies the spirit of the modern woman – confident, daring, and unapologetically unique,” added Angelo Seminara, Goldwell Global Ambassador. “Hair colour should be a reflection of one’s individuality, and MIDNIGHT BERRY offers endless possibilities for self-expression. It’s a shade that truly stands out in a crowd.”

AARON MIDDLETON PROMOTED TO ROGUE BEAUTY HEAD OF SALES AND EDUCATION
O&M have named their newest ambassador as Sheridan Rose Shaw of MAMAWEST. A renowned Melbourne hairdresser with 17 years of industry experience, Sheridan is known for her creative cutting and colour skills, as well as a passion for empowering the next generation.
“I first saw Sheridan’s work on Instagram. Her work with pigments really stood out to me then and, as I looked into her as a person, I was so inspired by the vulnerability she displays when discussing mental health and selfcare. I knew straight away that her talent and her willingness to be so open and honest made her the perfect O&M Ambassador,” said O&M Founder, Jose Bryce Smith. “We chose O&M as our salon partner firstly because it’s Australian born and made, also being the cleanest colour on the market is a total value alignment with MAMAWEST. I also appreciate the work O&M is doing within the industry, like their wellness retreats, giving hairdressers the tools to look after themselves inside and outside the salon environment,” Sheridan shared. www.orginalmineral.com

GHD LAUNCH CHRONOS HAIR STRAIGHTENER
ghd have debuted their latest technology in the form of the chronos straightener, which boasts faster, high-definition styling for stronger, shinier hair. The tool promises one-stroke results that last, with exclusive motion-responsive™ technology for three times faster styling, 85 per cent more shine, two times less frizz and three times more breakage protection.
The tool’s hero and breakthrough HD motion-responsive™ technology uses an intelligent algorithm to identify how the tool is being used for optimal heat and power delivery. This technology identifies the user’s styling motions and reacts by delivering the right amount of power into the plates to maintain the optimum temperature of 185°C with even higher precision. This greater heat consistency delivers superior straightening or curling in small or large sections.
“At ghd we are dedicated to developing pioneering technologies and creating the best-in-class products that tackle consumer and professional stylist needs,” said Jeroen Temmerman, ghd CEO. “ghd chronos, our latest beauty-tech breakthrough, is a momentous launch for ghd as it represents the pinnacle of over 22 years of understanding and mastering heat styling. Revolutionising the styler category, ghd chronos is the most advanced styler in the ghd award-winning styler portfolio, featuring HD technology to deliver the best performance we have ever seen from our range.”
Beyond this technology, the latest generation ceramic heater ensures optimal heat delivery into the plates, while ultra-gloss floating plates are an easy-glide styling option. The tool also has a reengineered wishbone hinge and smooth rounded barrel for creative possibilities and the capabilities to create high quality curls waves.
“Breakthrough high-definition technology allows ghd chronos to flawlessly monitor styler plate temperature, preserving the perfect styling temperature of 185 degrees,” shared Dafydd Thomas, ghd Global Director of Education. “I can’t wait for everyone to discover ghd chronos and the power to unlock ultra-defined, glossier waves and glass-like straights. As a professional chronos has allowed me to raise my hair game with unparalleled and impeccable results.”
The tool is headlined by British body positivity advocate and model Charli Howard as the global hair and face of the tool. It is also complemented by a trio of tools in the newly expanded bodyguard heat protection range, which all offer an invisible and lightweight thermal protective layer between hair and heat. The original product that protects all hair types is now joined by products made to specifically cater to coloured and fine hair, to protect from colour fade and aid natural volume, respectively. www.ghdhairpro.com.au

BEST OF MEN
For the third consecutive year, Mocha Group gathered the unique barber community to unite and recognise the pivotal role both business and creativity play in barbering while crowning the deserving Australian Modern Barber Awards (AMBAs) winners. Held in Melbourne at the illustrious and historical Plaza Ballroom, it was a night of character, writes
Cameron Pine.
Proving that atmosphere is everything when it comes to creative inspiration, the Barber Awards have a unique culture and energy unlike any other awards event known to hair. The night gives barbering its own voice and saw some of our industry’s boldest and most business savvy awarded across 15 categories, including Matt Clarke of Esq. Male Grooming who received the AMBA Australian Modern Barber of the Year, New York Barbers for AMBA Australian Modern Barber Business of the Year and the UK’s acclaimed George Smith who travelled Down Under to accept AMBA International Modern Barber of the Year.
Hosted by lil off the top legend Jules Tognini, the night’s formalities were fun and somewhat informal, a nod to a culture of passion for the experience and promise to people from all walks of life to embrace their individuality – barbering continues to be bold and the market growth is a
true reflection of that of the diverse talents and high-level consumer engagement the barber industry brings.
Launched in 2021 to provide men’s hairdressing and barbering trailblazers with a much needed and often requested benchmark of excellence, the AMBAs reflect the increasing impact of this industry. With men’s grooming a huge player in the global beauty market, this is a timely marker of the industry’s importance with Innovius Research stating it is extrapolated to reach $534 million in 2026.
Guests were treated to entertainment inspired by the grandeur of the Plaza Ballroom’s historical Spanish Rococo architecture. The classical musical greats were reimagined with an electro-pop, contemporary crossover, and fusion flavour. Performances featured live vocalists, plus a powerhouse female cast on the electro-acoustic harp, electro violin and electro cello, as well as DJ

Peril who played for the remaining time concluding the awards ceremony.
Highlights of the night also saw Mark Rabone of Esq. Male Grooming inducted into the AMBA Hall of Fame and Fraser Forsey take out the Nominated Special Recognition Award.
“The AMBAs have yet again shone a spotlight on some of the most exciting global talent in the grooming world. The role of barbers and the barber shop is deep rooted in our cultural history and they remain an integral part of so many Australian men’s lives. These creatives are operating at a world class level and their talents completely wowed our judges,” shared Mocha Group Owner and Publisher, Linda Woodhead.
Each award submission was deliberated on by an independent panel of judges including media, PR and business specialists, international barbering icons and specialists in the barbering industry. The awards were proudly sponsored by Heiniger, American Barber, BaByliss PRO, American Crew, Andis, Depot, JRL, Shortcuts, Excellent Edges, Timely, Comfortel and Wahl.
A fun 360 camera captured some of the cheekiest moves by some of our awards winners and guests. After, drinks in Melbourne’s CBD with a few whiskeys and gins paid respect to the culture of barbers on a night dedicated to this incomparable industry.
Congratulations to all the winners!

MADE FOR ORIGINALS
Step inside Made For Originals by O&M and you’d discover an immersive world of education that redefined the medium.
Hosted on Sunday November 12 at Sydney’s Carriageworks, the trendy warehouse space was filled with education stages and installations in a celebration of learning and the brand itself, writes
Shannon
Guss
With real-time colour transformations setting the agenda for the day, the O&M Made For Originals stages were led by five inspiring colour artists, Jaye Edwards of EdwardsAndCo, Amelia Jane of Milly the Space, Kim Haberly of Boho Blonde Perth, Kirsty Anne Sage of James The Salon and Becc Snow of Alchemy Salon, while prolific celebrity hairdresser Natalie Anne flitted between the main stage and each education stage as host, before conducting a styling education session of her own. A final Q&A with brand founder Jose Bryce Smith, international guest Tia Lambourn and the educators finished the proceedings before a drinks reception.
Within the festival-style event, a DJ, coffee carts, healthy lunch options, styling stations, product
walls and even the opportunity to take professional head shots added to the dynamic and fittingly original event style.
“Made For Originals was at the core of the brand, we just love originality. We’ve worked very well with independent educators and we just wanted a chance to bring them all together,” Jose said. “It was a way to give back to our customers. The ticket prices were normally what you pay to see one of these people and here you have five. We’re just wanting to bring people together, and just give them a really unique

experience. We believe that our role is to elevate, hairdressers are becoming like rock stars, they’re becoming entrepreneurs and hugely successful and we’re trying to elevate hairdressing.”
Kicking off the education proceedings as the first stage introduced, Jaye coloured with a point of difference in an inspirational, dimensional brunette look, later sitting down for an intimate and honest business Q&A that showcased his immense and varied insights as the leader of a salon franchise juggernaut.
“My goal today was utilise the entire range of Original Mineral colour,” Jaye shared. “Jose is a big inspiration of mine, she’s a rule breaker. Being a part of this and being able to be able to educate with all of these artists, as well as having a point of difference in what I’m educating, has been really rewarding.
Becc educated on creative colour, pushing herself with three models through the day, in a textured colour look, an alluring copper style and an artistic bold colour creation with pops of yellow and purple, and wowing the crowd with both her talent and efficiency in this difficult endeavour. Becc offered her perspective into colour application and business, with tangible tips that attendees could take back to the salon.
Amelia’s take on a glowy blonde was the ideal look to learn for summer, where she educated on building brightness, face framing techniques and creating a relevant, natural and long-lasting colour look in real salon time.
“When I first heard about this event, I had never seen or done anything like it. I thought it was such an amazing opportunity to connect and to just meet everyone who I usually see on Instagram, it’s pretty surreal to be honest,” Amelia said.
Kirsty Anne’s inimitable personality and humour shone through as she created a high contrast look that taught attendees to work “smarter, not harder”. She taught attendees not to over colour, lean into natural hues and mimic the sun’s organic lightening patterns in creating covetable blondes. Touting the hairdressing community as both life and career saving for her, she waxed lyrical about the power of a unique community-driven opportunity like Made For Originals, which is built by the power of the people.
Travelling all the way from Perth, Kim took over the final stage with an ever-present crowd eagerly learning from her viral, transformative colour insights, as gleaned from Kim’s own salon experience. She explained the importance of educating your clients as part of the consultation in what their colour journey involves and how to accommodate it to their lifestyles.
“I feel like I’m changing the industry with my education, in being honest and upfront, and I think that there’s so much confidence within that,” Kim said about her place in the event. “For me, it’s really important to be able to give accessible education to everyone and to keep that younger generation passionate.”
Natalie Anne dove deeper with the artists throughout the day, before delighting the audience
with her own Fashion Week inspired styles from Mariam Seddiq, including a tousled up style and an ever-trending snatched ponytail with applique details. She shared the impact of real-time, relevant, in-salon colour education and unparalleled business insights as presented in such a collaborative format.
“I have been really fortunate to be working with the brand for so many years, and I’ve seen them on board so many new talented educators and I really wanted to be a part of their journey, so hosting it for me was a no brainer,” Natalie Anne explained.
The final panel saw all these artists take to the stage, alongside Jose and international guest and social media superstar Tia Lambourn, to discuss topics of the value in their work and the significance in utilising our time to do something meaningful.
“I’ve been lucky enough to meet so many amazing people and to do collaborations with artists that I never even dreamed I’d be able to meet in person. I just think, if we’re lucky enough to be here for 80 years, then it’s so long, but also so not at the same time, you just have to make the most out of it and do something that scares you,” Tia said.
The experts spoke to their strengths and how they juggle their business, social media personas and how they continue to scale their businesses to make money by employing the right people to allow them to focus on what they love. All with a common thread of a passion for education outside of their own businesses, each panellist was excited for the opportunities of 2024 and spoke to the importance of working together creatively with people that inspire you.
With collaboration at its core, inspiration as a focus and that titular, brand led originality paving the way, O&M Made For Originals delighted a massive crowd for an entire Sunday and made its festival-style experience totally worthwhile.

GLOBAL METAMORPHOSIS
The winners in the 2023 global L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy were announced in December, paving the way in futuristic hair and rewarding ANZ representative Rebecca Brent for her efforts.
Congratulations to New Zealand’s own Rebecca Brent of Willis York salon in Wellington, who represented the first ever Australian and New Zealand hub at the 2023 L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy, and took home the illustrious bronze medal.
The international winners were announced online on both YouTube and gaming platform Roblox, crowning those who best created under the Meta-morphosis theme, centred on the virtual world, while a new category for computergenerated imagery artists (CGI) pointed to the future of artistry as well.
Rebecca’s third place title was awarded amongst first place finisher Jingwang Zhang of China Mainland, and second place finisher Slawomir Suder of Poland-Baltics.
“Representing ANZ on the global stage in Paris was a dream come true for me,” Rebecca said. “Finishing in the top three was the pinnacle achievement in my career to date! It was a ‘wow moment’ for me to know that I am capable of world class hairstyling, and it validates my creative ideas around my work.”
Finalists were evaluated during the global finale by a jury composed of four international industry influencers – Min Kim, Derick Monroe, Charlie Le

Mindu and the CGI artist Samy La Crapule. Across 35 countries, the finalists were chosen from over 105,000 applications, amounting to five times more than the 2022 edition, and showcasing the talent of the national representatives.
The general public voted for their favourite virtual style through December, with the awards announced on December 19. Making use of Roblox’s 40-million users gaming platform, users
took part in this vote as the first ever branded poll session on Fashion Famous, the popular dress-up game, and then were invited to personalise their avatars with creative and diverse hairstyles for the winner announcement. This is synergistic with L’Oréal Professionnel, which has launched four virtual hair collections with Charlie Le Mindu, a global hairstylist, and Evan Rochette, a CGI artist. The brand continues to innovate into modern technology, expanding on over 100 years of hair care, style and colour innovation.
Rebecca won the national title amidst a competitive field, advancing to the finals at a live semi-final gala event in Sydney and winning for a bright pink, layered look, during a comprehensive competition weekend in Melbourne. Her win follows a myriad of ANZ success in the global competition, with our own Wendy Gunn, Massimo Tirimacco and Claudia Cataldo winning the last three iterations of the highly lauded global awards.
Congratulations to Rebecca on this outstanding global accolade!

MAKE THE RULES
New categories, updated processes and enticing updates in the upcoming Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative) have been built to enable artistry at its very best.
We’re looking ahead to the 2024 Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative), which are officially open for entry! It’s time to dream up your editorial ideas to throw your hat in this important arena, with new categories and processes that streamline and elevate the platform.
For 2024, the awards have been simplified with the written component minimalised for the latest iteration of the competition. This new entry process brings pure creativity into prime focus, while business acumen, education ability, salon management and ownership are highlighted more under the AHIA Business umbrella. Most entries now only require a few simple questions in relation to the description, inspiration, and creative process of each photographic collection so entrants can primarily focus on their artistic looks.
Within these changes, new categories have also been added. The categories of Emerging Stylist and Colourist have been added for hairdressers who have finished their apprenticeship, while a new AI Collection of the Year speaks to the power of modern technology, with entry open for hairdressers, photographers and graphic designers. Collective Team of the Year replaces Colab of the Year, appealing to groups of two or more individuals from different salons, salon groups or product companies, while New Zealand has introduced its own state-style categories in the form of North Island and South Island Hairdresser of the Year.
The all new AHIA Awards Path delineates the entry process into timelines, from hairdressers who are still in training, beginning their career in the first five years, continuing the next phase of their career,
established hairdressers and the pinnacle awards for hairdressers who have been qualified for at least eight years.
Specifically, apprentices can enter Apprentice of the Year, the new AI Hair Collection of the Year and be part of Collective or Salon Team of the Year.
Hairdressers who have been qualified for up to five years are eligible for Emerging Stylist of the Year, Emerging Colourist of the Year, Men’s Hair Specialist of the Year, AI Hair Collection of the Year and can be part of Collective or Salon Team of the Year, as well as being able to apply for the HOT SHOTS team for hairdressers 31 and under.
Hairdressers who have been qualified between two and six years can also enter AI Hair Collection, Collective Team, Salon Team, Men’s Hair Specialist and the HOT SHOTS team, as well as New Creative Talent of the Year and Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year.
Hairdressers who have been qualified for over five years have the opportunity to enter Master Colourist and Cutter of the Year, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, Men’s Hair Specialist of the Year, the Australian state and New Zealand categories, AI Hair Collection and the Salon and Collective Team categories.
Hairdressers qualified for over eight years gain access to Australian Hairdresser of the Year, New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year and International Hairdresser of the Year. Entrants must have already won a
similar hair industry award at a state level or be a previous winner of Colour Expert of the year or similar or have been a finalist or winner at the national level, with other exclusive criteria for entrants in these pinnacle awards.
Another major change is that colourists can now enter into Australian or New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year for the first time ever, meaning you can be a stylist, colourist or both to qualify in these top-tier awards. Each collection must be completely unique to each entrant.
“Our main goal was to make the AHIAs (Creative) more accessible to all, whether an apprentice just starting out or one of our industry icons going once again for a big one,” shared Mocha Group Owner and Founder Linda Woodhead. “We know that our most creative minds are focused on the final result, bringing their unique vision to life within their collection. This allows each and every entrant to do so without feeling concerned about analysis of their business prowess or way with words. We can’t wait to see the entire industry get planning and shooting and can only imagine what 2024 submissions will bring.”
The deadline for entry is March 28 ,2024, with finalists announce on May 6 and the gala awards night on July 1, as the final highlight in the Hair Festival 2024 weekend. Good luck and start your entries!

DINNER WITH REDKEN
Stepping into a sophisticated world of luxury, fine food and cocktails with a quintessential all black Redken vibe, Bar M in Sydney’s Neild Avenue became the potent playground for more than 65 of Redken’s Power Network, key salons and ambassadors on Sunday November 12, writes
Cameron Pine.
Bar M, formerly known as Bar Machiavelli, has expansive spaces, high ceilings and walls with projected images with an industrial charm – it was the ideal environment to create a memorable event that rewarded some of the hair industry’s most loyal identities. With a strong focus on traditional Italian cuisine and immersive experiences, it was the perfect venue to celebrate a network of distinctly individual ‘Redkenites’.
Taking stock of some clear wins and a forever increasing market share, Redken combined its salon partners, head office and ambassador network and gave them an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy live music and endless flow of food, cocktails and camaraderie. Guests were even able to take home a custom piece of jewellery by Kristy Lee jewellery, as delicate as the flowers that adorned the entire middle of two long tables. An almost Gatsby-esque atmosphere ensured guests were in for a real treat every step of the night.
L’Oréal Professional Products Division General Manager, Carlos Figueiras, greeted guests marking the next two days of education and the Australian Hair Fashion Awards as a great opportunity to unite the entire network and get to know each other at a more intimate level.
“We are going to spend two amazing days together, to celebrate, to connect and to meet each other so thanks for everyone for being here,” Carlos said.

incredible success of Redken Acidic Bonding concentrate. Along with Redken All Soft growing 50 per cent year on year – Redken has also been noted as the benchmark standard for all Beauty Crew campaigns with a number of top online sellers.
“Redken is an incredible brand – a brand that brings people together and creates a community, a network of people. Together we come together as one, our Power Network,” Madison said.
“You, our Redken Power Network, includes some of our salons, artists, advocates, talent, talent managers, media, both trade and consumer, key partners and some of our internal team. We wanted to bring you all together for a chance to meet one another, but also to celebrate the power of coming together as the Power Network. It is a truly unique community and we are stronger together,” Madison said.
The successful in-salon and online sales brand has also invested a huge focus on ratings and reviews where they have earned five stars through BeautyCrew for all the Acidic Bonding Concentrate (ABC) products, which is a significant feat in a forever crowded retail landscape.
“This month, we have expanded the range and introduced the game-changing 5-Minute Mask, which on all accounts is turning out to be the star product and you all get to experience it as part of your goodie bags from this evening,” Madison said.
A sneak peek into 2024 also ensued where the leading colour brand will be launching the first ammonia-free, liquid permanent colour – Color Gels Oils!
Excited for this new innovative colour range and its endless possibilities and intermixing capabilities, Redken are hoping this key innovation continues to mark them as the liquid hair colour authority. Color Gels Oils is also the perfect pair with Redken’s OG liquid colour Shades EQ – so a strong focus on the professional network in 2024 will see these amazing formulas and transformations come to life from these products in 2024.
“Redken Color Gels Oils is tipped to be one of the most exciting launches of the year, the first ammonia free liquid permanent Colour is set to see Redken as the liquid colour authority. Lastly, we want to thank you for joining us and all your support, not only this year but how you have contributed to Redken,” said Redken PR Manager Melanie Sutherland.
Music by DJ Betty Swing banging out some old classics and working through the crowd with a saxophone added to the atmosphere of prestige, celebration and a premium artistic network akin to the Redken brand and legacy.

COLOUR COMMUNITY
The creators of Pulp Riot have done it again with this leading colour – Danger Jones is now debuting globally and putting the artist back into the industry. Using creativity as its muse, Danger Jones is much more than a colour line, writes Cameron Pine.
Just when you thought a vivid colour line could be any more versatile, David and Alexis Thurston dreamed up a new colour phenomenon that starts with the packaging – a display brand that clients will fall in love with from the minute they see it. David and Alexis own famed Los Angeles salon, Butterfly Loft, which employs over 30 professional stylists, all while they continue to build a global following of Danger Jones fanatics. Built from the tagline ‘we create art not commerce’, Danger Jones is a passion led people brand.
The Australian launch of the brand took place on November 8. Held at Melbourne’s suitably grungy The Third Day warehouse space, Alexis and David travelled from Los Angeles alongside American natives Kristina Dunn and Amanda Harsche, with Australia’s educator Lexie Shay traveling from Queensland, to share the excitement of a brand that feels different from the first touch of the soft-touch box. Co-hosted by Australian distributor Salon Cosmetics and CEO Nick Panagiotou, the Australian launch night included live education on real-life models, drinks, food and plenty of opportunity to share a collective passion for creative colour.
“When most brands are decreasing quality and increasing prices, we are increasing quality and investing in technology we haven’t seen before in professional colour. We’ve brought four badass women together on stage. With 85 per cent of our industry women, we are reflection of our industry,” David said.
David believes in leading with authenticity and loyalty, and by building relationships that are genuine, success is the only prose. His partner, Alexis, is the other half of a creative duo that mixes the perfect dose of salon creativity with business acumen.
“In our own salons we noticed some of the products our staff are using weren’t giving the longevity that we wanted so it was time to create our own. Danger Jones is a thinner
consistency that is easy to apply, saturates better and you don’t need to use as much product,” Alexis said.
Danger Jones assists stylists in breaking down the four walls of the traditional hair salon, uniting the industry and inviting the clients in. It’s a community focused brand that does everything it can to build people with the best product available.
In a general industry trend where cost cutting exists, David and Alexis believes that disruptive individuals are always searching for something better and Danger Jones helps to achieve that.
“We are about finding ways to add quality even if it costs a lot of money to do it, if stylists are going to support a brand we need to invest in them as well. It’s about growing with like-minded people,” David said. “Everywhere we go it’s about building that global community – not only through our social media groups that every stylist can join. In every launch country in the last six months we are combining local and international artists together to learn from each other and grow.”
Many of the salons and stylists from Melbourne who attended, some from interstate, said it was such a phenomenal opportunity and evening to spend time with industry leaders while witnessing creativity at its finest.
Testament to a brand that’s all about experience for the stylist and consumer, Danger Jones starts with the stylist handing the client the product and that’s where they see it, feel the soft touch box, relate to it and buy into the brand – a key reason why Salon Cosmetics believe in the
huge potential for Danger Jones to add to any colour salon in Australia.
“We’ve looked at a lot of different brands and worked with many over the years, some we politely don’t work with, but Danger Jones is something that aligns with our values as a business and is the type of company we want to be involved with,” said Salon Cosmetics CEO Nick Panagitou.
“That’s where we inspire people to be part of our packaging – we designed the packaging with gig artists that make gig posters for some of the biggest artists in the world such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers – you don’t see a logo on it, it’s part of the artwork. The majority of colours on the box are what’s inside – the back of the carton also shows a swatch chart and shows what the colour will look like on different shades of hair so there’s a realistic expectation for both the stylist and the client,” Alexis said.
This approach helps with education and also helps clients understand the need for lightening services, with Danger Jones also having an incredible lightener that lifts up to ten levels, contains a built-in bonder and has proprietary sea algae technology, taken from skincare, to ensure a luxurious experience and the utmost hair integrity through every step of the Danger Jones process.
A hair, beauty, fashion and lifestyle brand that also makes designer clothes, Danger Jones is a true creative asylum that’s investing in community and paving the way for community-led artistry industry-wide. For more information visit www.dangerjonescreative.com and www.saloncosmetics.com.au

EYE ON HONG KONG
For the 26th year running, roaming international beauty trade exhibition Cosmoprof landed in Asia, with Hong Kong playing host to 60,000 attendees and over 2,400 exhibitors,
writes Hannah Gay
Cosmoprof Asia 2023 was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Hong Kong Island. Professional Beauty Australia attended the mammoth show on behalf of BHA Media and INSTYLE, which ran from November 15 to 17. Comopack Asia –a sister event educating on the beauty supply chain – also ran that week.
Cosmoprof Asia 2023 was jointly produced by Asia Informa Markets, Hong Kong and BolognaFiere.
According to the organisers’ website, Cosmoprof Asia is an ideal platform to explore future trends and find the newest and best in beauty from around the world. One venue with thousands of beauty products dedicated to the retail and the professional distribution channels.
Registration numbers for the 2023 event were said to have exceeded numbers for both Cosmoprof Asia’s 2018 and 2019 events. Organisers also noted an increasing number of registrations out of China and Hong Kong, with strong numbers remaining out of Europe.
“The Asian market is most sought-after globally,” said David Bondi, Senior Vice President of Asia Informa Markets and Director of Cosmoprof Asia Ltd. He added, Asia-Pacific currently drives 67 per cent of global beauty market growth. Francesca Donati, Head of International Marketing for Asia Bolognafiere Cosmoprof agreed, “we speak a global language with a local essence”.
Ms Margaret McConnolly, President and CEO of Asia Informa Markets, Hong Kong said sustainability was at the forefront of much of the event’s talks, exhibition stands and product formulations. It was also said such a focus was especially true for Asian consumers, who are interested in natural ingredients now more than ever post-COVID.
A series of special events ran throughout the week, designed to engage international guests and showcase the best beauty brands have to offer. In a nod to the event’s sustainability focus, COSMOLAB x OPAL’s installation educated guests on green manufacturing via a multisensory journey. BOUTIQUE, a Hong Kong-based charity initiative raising funds for environmental protection, provided space for sponsoring brands to showcase and sell their flagship products.
For those looking to up their beauty education, COSMOTALKS AND COSMO ONSTAGE made for just the places. At COSMOTALKS, presentations ranged from topics including sustainable beauty trends, tech-enhanced skincare, and the Asian beauty market. Live demonstrations entertained guests at COSMO ONSTAGE, where exhibiting microstimulation devices, cosmetics and skin analysis technologies were put into practice.
Winners of the Cosmoprof Asia 2023 awards were also announced at an exclusive presentation. Finalists competed in a range of categories, including: Hair Products, Home & Professional Devices and Tools, Make Up Products, Personal Care & Body Care Products, Green & Organic, and Skin Care Products.

MANE STAGE
Featuring artists from every corner of the industry that amass millions of industry followers, the MANE STAGE line up for 2023 united some of our home grown and international heroes who collectively make a global influence on hairdressing, writes Cameron Pine.
With each segment designed to finish the year on an inspirational high and leverage guests into the artist they want to be, a variety of perspectives came from business to tools, consultation tips, styling tips, colour and high creativity – each with a highly personal twist.
Hairdressers with a large following including ambassadors and salon owners made up the spectrum of MANE STAGE that covered all areas of artistry –Sarah Emilia, James Earnshaw, Belinda Mills, Kaine Vakai, Dom Pelli, Chantelle Maree and many more divulged their hacks and tips to an audience of more than 300 people for a full day on Sunday November 12 preceding the Australian Hair Fashion Awards.
With brand alignments from fashion hair to colour, with Redken, Wella TrendVision, Dyson and beyond, the stage shared something for a variety of brand devotees, also bolstered by the F.A.M.E. Team showing just how creative and visionary our young generation of hairdressers can be.
Talking technology and innovation behind Dyson and how it helps stylists, Eoin McCarthy and Peter Thomsen sat alongside Dyson’s Kelly Morgan.
”I feel like technology is always changing and now we know that clients absolutely love and want Dyson in the salon – what they most fall in love with is the shine,” Peter said. “The most exciting thing about being creative is being uncomfortable and challenging ourselves and that’s what today is all about.”
Similarly, the artistry remains the most important thing for Eoin – and tools that save time and allow him to be an artist drive him.
“A lot of the looks I like to create are fairly natural and not too manufactured. I always want to give them something realistic that lasts. I prefer to use my hands – it’s the best styling product we have. Using the hands also shows the clients they can do that too. A lot of men love gadgets so when I put the Dyson out, they love it,” Eoin said.
Each artist had a unique insight or comment that was uniquely them, there were no scripts or set formulas, it was a MANE STAGE session of unbridled learnings.
Redken powered their network of industry leaders with ‘The World of Liquid Colour’ – Sheree Knobel, Justin Pace, Kaine Vakai, Kyra Williams, Ash

Wuillemin and Sara Briscoe each spoke to their strengths and their colour tips. Each artist's unique identity proves that Redken remains at the forefront of trending highshine colour without compromising the hair’s integrity.
Using a combination of pre-done looks including mannequin heads alongside models, it was about showcasing versatility of Redken colour. Championing Blonde, Kaine focused on the commercial blonde everyone wants.
Hairdressing royalty Errol Douglas sat onstage alongside Richard Mannah for a Q&A and insight into his life as a multiaward-winning hairdresser. Both agreed the best way to learn from other people is to assist with other people. Nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year Errol has worked on photographic work all his life.
“From the minute I don’t win anything I’m looking at what I can do differently seasonally to appeal to the now – I’m looking at seasons ahead, something futuristic,” he said.
Richy Kandasamy and Renee Valerie hit the stage to launch the next generation of hair colour with R+Color. Titled R+Co Techniclour it was all about technicolour inspiration and dynamic trends. Joining them was also R+Co Australian ambassador Brad Rixon.
“Shorty textured hair needs multiple tones, you need to be careful, placement needs to be delicate – here we’ve created a lilac sorbet with velvety olive tones, blueish and a bit of pink together,” Richy said.
High on impact and intricate in placement, it was also about colour suiting skin tone – a tool they used to show the consumer what colours will work on their skin, which is a key to successful salon colour and something R+Color are championing to re-ignite the colour industry.
James Earnshaw as Wella Professionals Global Ambassador presented Colour Out Loud, combining dreamy pastels and optimistic brights with tonal browns.
“It’s about intermixing the blonde with the high colour. It softens it and makes look a little more premium. Everyone wants to look sexy and premium.”
Madison Voloshin for Davroe worked on a variety of curly and textured hair types to show how Davroe products work and tame all types of hair.
“I want show how we moisturise the hair, even the curliest of hair. We are actually going to turn it into a flat top today – it’s all styling and no cutting. Working as a session stylist internationally, it’s about showing you some styling tricks of the trade and using product to make maximum impact,” Madison said.
The 2023 F.A.M.E. Team presented their last creative execution for the year with an intensely detailed show inspired by incredible individuality. Titled WOMAN, each F.A.M.E. Team member presented what inspires them to be uniquely themselves as an artist while also supporting women’s rights. Some of the most creative fashion styling and Avant Garde hair paid respect to the F.A.M.E. Team’s incredible artistic talents.
“Our F.A.M.E. Team have grown as women, they have grown as hairdressers and we could not be more proud of their creativity,” said F.A.M.E. Team mentor Jack Morton. “Taking a moment for the outfits as much of the hair, the team put together a real hallmark hairdressing showcase.”
Ending the day with the Social Media Superstars segment, it was about each panel guest sharing their stories about both their journey as hairdressers and social media influencers. The day’s presenters had the opportunity to share more of an insight into how they juggle their life and profile as an artist. Sarah Emilia, Belinda Mills, James Earnshaw, Dom Pelli, Kaine Vakai and Chantelle Maree guided the audience on what makes authentic content and how to create the following that helps propel them to grow their earnings from hairdressing, while sticking to their values and limitations.
“Our mission has always been to energise and educate our industry’s bright minds, especially the rising stars. The AHFA Weekend is a testament to this commitment, and we’re thrilled with the outcome of this year’s event,” said M Division CEO, David Mannah. “Plans are already underway for next year’s AHFA Weekend, promising another incredible experience filled with innovation and learning.”

ZERO TO HERO
43 shades of natural looking colour comes courtesy of Schwarzkopf Professional’s new vegan IGORA ZERO AMM, a healthy approach to trending hues that appeals to an ever-growing cohort of conscious consumers.
Schwarzkopf Professional’s latest innovation, IGORA ZERO AMM, is set to change your salon’s colour repertoire. The vegan formula, which is enriched with Phytolipid Technology and is free of ammonia and ammonia odour, creates natural looking hues, true-to-tone results and 100 per cent white hair coverage. Think of it as your reliable colour tool, just like the rest of the IGORA family, minus the ammonia.
All formulations are vegan, silicone-free and without added fragrance, ensuring a pleasant colour experience, and catering to conscious consumers seeking healthier products. Beyond ecological formulas, the product is housed in sustainable packaging, with 100 per cent recycled aluminium tubes, 100 per cent recycled plastic caps and minimum 92 per cent recycled paper for the folding box.
Key benefits include the power of ammonia-free permanent hair colouration that, with a combination of specific pigment mixes and micronised oils, maximises the experience of
ammonia-free colouration. New services come in the form of Classic, Refresh and Blonde Refinement to harness the power of this natural technology, with the advantage of even pigment penetration from root to tip.
“This is a truly wonderful product. I love the assortment, especially the more natural-feeling hue some of the shades create. It’s amazing for any client,” shared Lesley Jennison, Schwarzkopf Professional Global Ambassador.
The micronised oils are comprised of grape seed oil and apricot kernel oil for improved colour performance and long-lasting results, while also increasing diffusion efficacy to actively push pigments into the hair. Omega 9 unsaturated fatty acids envelop the hair in these oils to support the moisture balance inside, also sealing the cuticle for optimal care. Clients can expect a delicate but intense permanent colour result that lasts.
The launch also ensures improved colour direction, coverage and neutralisation, while additionally
offering up to three levels of lift in an improved highlift colour performance. The technology can be used with existing IGORA ROYAL Oil Developers with no extra developer required, and there are flexible service opportunities within a concise assortment. Your salon can offer 100 per cent ammonia free dual application from roots to ends by combining IGORA ZERO AMM and IGORA VIBRANCE. Clients can choose between IGORA ROYAL, IGORA VIBRANCE, and IGORA ZERO AMM for colour longevity, vibrancy, low maintenance hair, low commitment, low damage, natural looking tones or a natural experience as necessary.
Within this colour launch, which includes 12 new shades, the Schwarzkopf Professional creative team is innovating across the artistic spectrum. Trending hues such as Muted Bronze and Muted Golds are inspiring artists across the international industry. Muted Bronze utilises a placement technique that elevates dual application and white coverage colour services, where colour is applied globally to the regrowth before three different tones are layered through the ends, creating a shimmer-like effect. Muted Golds create highs and lows emphasising the texture of the haircut, while the hues traverse vibrant and neutral options across the range.
Schwarzkopf Professional is committed to delivering products with 100 per cent performance, as available in over 120 countries. Supporting professional colourists with technologies, creative options and portfolios that enable the businesses and craft of hairdressing, IGORA ZERO AMM is the latest savvy, conscious addition to the fold. HAIR CONTROL
Qiqi’s game-changing approach to the science of hair control will continue to elevate in 2024, with a new brand direction, updated categories and innovative launches paving the way through the new year.
2024 ushers in a bright new phase for hair control brand Qiqi, brought to Australia by Dateline Imports. Centred on transformative and inclusive salon-grade care and control products for both professionals and consumers, the company is predicated on bold science and ingredients that ensure long-lasting results. A new brand direction, packaging and visual approach in 2024 will fuel this core ethos.
The creative new direction hopes to expand on how people see keratin straightening to further capitalise on this essential market, with a mission to empower consumers to transform their hair with zero compromise, beyond just the idea of permanent straightening, to a sense of broad, varied and total hair control. This new direction embraces clients with all hair textures and celebrates freedom of expression with an Avant Garde new look that’s sleek, modern and stylish.
“Moving forward our goal is to empower people to express and care for their hair. We want to create transformative and inclusive salon-grade hair control,” shared Qiqi’s Director of Global Education. “By changing how we speak about the product and calling it hair control, it opens us up to a lot more opportunities and doesn’t paint us into a corner of only being able to be used for one thing.”
“We’re really elevating the brand imagery. We’re going from a very sophomore bubble-gummy type of imagery to a more elevated more sophisticated branding,” the Director added. “We’ve created very evocative designs. We did not go off the shelf with our packaging; all our packaging was designed first and then created.”
A new naming system delineates the products into two categories of the Qiqi ProCtrl and Qiqi SelfCtrl lines. In the professionally focused ProCtrl range, the former Qiqi Vega has received a visual revamp with all the same benefits as before, becoming the hero Qiqi Hair Controller line, which softens the disulphide bonds in hair to permanently straighten, reduce frizz or enhance curls even on compromised and overly processed hair. This transformative power receives tailored scientific care with Thin & Delicate, Wavy & Curly and Thick & Coarse options that cater to various hair types without damage.
The ProCtrl range also offers the Go Deeper Shampoo to purify hair and deeply cleanse hair, preparing hair for all salon services in an all-new look that replaces the former Qiqi Love Is In The Hair Shampoo. The indulgent Smooth Service Shampoo XXX-L deeply moisturises as the new answer to the former Qiqi Makes You Feel Like You Just Left The Salon Shampoo. The professional formula smooths, hydrates,
softens and nourishes the hair. The Super Soaker Smoothing Mask XXX-L is an ultrahydrating haircare experience as the new take on the former Qiqi Not Just Smooth Insanely Smooth Mask, revitalising, moistening and softening the hair, while offering restoration, healing and shine thanks to a potent, minimalistic formula of hydrating agents and botanical extracts.
The SelfCtrl retail line offers a range of new and updated technologies, with retail, after care options of the Smooth Service Shampoo and Qiqi Super Soaker Smoothing Mask. Additionally, the Hydration Fixation Conditioner is a new addition to the line, quenching all types of thirsty hair for health, shine and vitality thanks to 20 essential ingredients. The new Porosity Play Spray also joins the group, as a heat-activated multipurpose spray that smooths hair and leaves it with shine, strength and a healthy appearance. The product is humidity resistant, offers heat protection up to 230°C, guards against colour fading and protects hair from environmental damage with long-lasting, reparative results.
Qiqi are never satisfied with the status quo and are constantly breaking the mould to move the hair industry forward. New titles, packaging and a visual ethos in 2024 seek to empower professionals and consumers on the true power of hair transformation and control.

NEW LANE
The newest iteration of Salon Lane expands on the co-working initiative’s Brisbane presence with an expansive and impressive Teneriffe salon, writes
Shannon Guss
Innovative co-working salon space Salon Lane has opened its second Brisbane location in Teneriffe, six months after opening their first Brisbane space in West Village. Salon Lane is renowned as Australia’s leading premium workspace provider for independent hair, beauty, and wellness entrepreneurs and this new iteration, located at the iconic Willoughby & Co Woolstores, known as the Nova Building, builds on that impact.
“Salon Lane Teneriffe will be a hub of opportunities for independent freelancers who operate north of the river. Like Salon Lane West End, Teneriffe will be a space where creativity will flourish, connections forged, and dreams realised. It’s been a very busy and exciting journey so far and we’re only getting started,” shared Salon Lane Co-Founder and CEO, Jared Keen.
The Teneriffe space is set over the 830 square metres with 50 hair, beauty and wellness spaces. A concierge and retail shop is set on the ground level, while an interconnected staircase to the first level leads the way to 22 private studios, 20 open workstations and

a nail lounge, colour bar, client lounge, coffee bar, member lounge, laundry and media content room.
The space debuted on November 28, 2023, with an array of independent hair and beauty businesses establishing their new endeavours as Foundation Members.
“I initially joined Salon Lane in Sydney, travelling from Brisbane to work. I was so excited when I found out they were opening a location in Teneriffe! From the Concierge that greets my clients, to the modern fit out and facilities, and the large array of retail I can provide to my clients on their way out – I know that working from Salon Lane is a guarantee for me to provide the best possible experience to my clients,” shared colour expert and freelancer Rhys Nahuysen.
“We have chosen Salon Lane Teneriffe as the location for our third salon and
first in Queensland. Salon Lane provides our business with a unique platform for expansion,” added Tokyo Head Spa’s CEO, Ricky Rosen, who used Salon Lane to expand the business from Sydney. “Their sites are magnificent and provide our clients with a unique and memorable experience from the time they walk through the front door. Their team is unbelievable to work with, no ask is too big and our therapists enjoy the work environment and thrive off the collaboration with other members.”
Salon Lane was founded in 2020 and now has expanded to four Australian locations, including Sydney’s Surry Hills and Lower North Shore. The initiative promises flexibility, support and community, as an industry pioneer that continues to flourish. For more information visit www.salonlane.com.au

Discover the trials, victories and learnings in over three decades of Axis Salon, writes
AShannon Guss .
well-known and leading hair salon for over 30 years, Axis Salon – formerly Axis Hairdressing – launched in 1991, and continues to thrive now under the helm of Adam and Michelle Ciaccia. The salon now leads the way in Canberra since 2013 with Adam as managing partner and social media acclaim leading to unprecedented profitability and growth, but with challenges and learnings along the way.
Once described as a “modest” eight-chair space, the salon’s bold content strategy saw it grow to a 25-staff operation. However, various challenges through this phase, particularly with the impact of the pandemic on the business, allowed Adam and Michelle to revaluate and streamline the business to an optimal point, with key business insights through this process.
“In the face of challenges and with the benefit of hindsight, Adam and I decided to reassess the salon’s operations,” Michelle said. “We recognised the importance of optimising fixed costs, such as wages, insurances, and rent, to ensure long-term sustainability. Negotiations in our current location hit a roadblock when we realised that our rent was set to double. This sealed our fate at this location and prompted us to search for a new location. This presented an opportunity to start afresh, incorporating the lessons we had learned over the years.”
“Axis Salon emerged as the result of this revaluation and subsequent relocation. It represents an evolution that draws from decades of experience in the industry, with input from hair professionals and salon guests, past and present; and recognising the changing needs of the salons clientele. The new incarnation is best described as smaller and specialised; even though the physical space is bigger, embracing a boutique approach to our hairdressing services, this reflects a commitment to delivering personalised, high-quality services. Axis Salon’s point of difference lies in its versatility and commitment to providing a unique experience for both hair professionals and clients.”
This new space was redesigned to ensure a bright and inviting atmosphere, as built with natural lighting merged with well-designed artificial

lighting, and an open environment for comfort and relaxation.
“Axis Salon’s design philosophy leans towards minimalism and modern aesthetics,” Michelle shared. “This approach involves clean lines, simple colour palettes, and uncluttered spaces. We wanted a design that conveys a sense of sophistication and elegance. We sourced our salon furniture from Maletti in Italy, we believe it reflects a commitment to quality and luxury. High-quality furniture not only enhances the salon’s aesthetics but also contributes to the comfort and satisfaction of both clients and staff. Italian design is associated with craftsmanship and timeless elegance, which aligns with the salon’s aesthetic
“The salon’s design considers the comfort and experience of both clients and staff,” she continued, “Comfortable and ergonomic furniture makes a difference in how clients feel during their appointments, while also ensuring that staff can work efficiently and comfortably. While the salon priorities aesthetics, it also emphasises functionality. A well-designed salon layout and furniture placement can optimise workflow and create a seamless experience for clients. The blend of functionality and elegance results in a salon that not only looks good but works efficiently.”
Features include a custom-made table by NOMI in Sydney, which acts as a shared workspace for clients and includes features such as wireless phone charging, high-speed fibre internet connectivity and space for laptops and documents, speaking to how accommodating and welcoming the salon is for clients.
Within this environment, the salon prides itself on trending, fashion forward cut and colour that lasts, with versatile hero services to match the diverse clientele. Salon partnerships with the L’Oréal Professional Products Division,

Sustainability is at the heart of O’right and a myriad of specialised initiatives set the brand apart from an environmental perspective, as led by Founder and CEO, Steven Ko. Steven saw sustainability as a competitive business advantage, in addition to its benefits for the planet and its people at large. Steven’s own battles with severe allergies, which in turn urged him to research the effects of chemicals on hairdressers’ health, informed this drive and passion to create products that help people and planet.
“In 2006, O’right had established green sustainability as its goal and by 2009 it had launched its own carbon footprint verification,” the brand explained.
“The following year, we obtained the first batch of carbon footprint labels in Taiwan, followed in 2011 by the first carbon neutral label, which was certified by the British Standards Institution (BSI). It stands as the world’s first zero carbon shampoo, marking a significant milestone. O’right then went on to achieve carbon neutrality for all its products, factories and organisations for three consecutive years since 2020 and became the first zero carbon beauty corporation in the world.”
The brand ethos is built from the O’right’s original green standards, which set carbon reduction plans in five stages of the product life cycle, from raw material acquisition to manufacturing, delivery and sale, consumer use and waste recycling. It has since followed and met international guidelines and certifications to scientifically test and implement non-chemicals and agricultural byproducts in its products and processes, to mitigate climate change and protect the environment and biodiversity. major milestones for the brand includes its pioneering global stance in introducing 100 per cent PCR (post-consumer recycled) consumer products, utilising recycled plastics in all its shampoo and body wash products, as a major asset to the circular economy.
“To prevent plastic from ending up in the oceans or incinerators, O’right has built a technical circular system, to comprehensively reuse recycled materials, connect bottle factories and recycling facilities and cooperate to regenerate the PCR plastic bottle supply chain, with a carbon reduction of up to 80 per cent,” the brand shared. “Since 2017, we have successfully prevented five million plastic

The brand is looking to continue their impressive work in sustainability, philanthropy and education, where broad consumer awareness, advocacy and education remains a passion for the brand.
Steven’s environmental education projects include sponsoring the premiere of the documentary HOME by Luc Besson to the 2022 Melting Greenland project, which shines a necessary light on Greenland’s ice melting at seven times the historical rate, as well as providing a focus on the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, a low-lying nation that faces an existential threat from rising sea levels, as supported by major foundations and institutions. The experts at Hair and Skin Science are an excellent recommendation for hairstylists looking to guide their clients towards optimal hair and skin health solutions. After all, there’s only so much that can be done with layers and colours to give the appearance of more voluminous hair.
Ultimately in addition to our style advice as a hairdresser, we should also explore options for addressing hair loss on a more long-term basis. This is where clinics like Hair and Skin Science come into play.
Hair and Skin Science, under the leadership of Jenna Chan, has emerged as a pioneering force in the realm of hair loss treatments. Starting in 2017 with a modest investment of $100,000, Jenna’s commitment and expertise has been honed over 20 years as a professional. Such commitment in the hair loss industry has propelled the organisation to remarkable heights with locations across the country.
Hair and Skin Science boasts 25 locations across major Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and stands as the largest provider of Plasma hair and skin treatments in Australia. Their offering includes affordable FUE Hair Transplants by registered surgeons and exclusive US patented Growth Factor hair and skin treatments.
Let’s delve into what makes Hair and Skin Science unique and how they might be the solution to your clients’ hair loss problems.
VARIOUS TREATMENTS AVAILABLE
The first thing that sets Hair and Skin Science apart is their extensive range of hair loss treatments, catering to diverse needs and conditions. They offer innovative solutions that combine the latest technology with personalised care.
PRP TREATMENTS
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment is at the forefront of non-surgical hair restoration methods. This process begins with drawing a small blood sample, similar to routine blood tests. The sample is then centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in growth factors. This concentrated plasma is then injected into the scalp, particularly in areas of significant hair thinning or loss. PRP treatments stimulate hair follicles, promoting new hair growth and enhancing the thickness and health of existing hair. At Hair and Skin Science, these treatments typically require approximately six sessions for maximum results and are considered natural, noninvasive treatments that show promising outcomes in combatting hair loss. Recovery for PRP treatments is instant, allowing patients to return to normal activities quickly, with maximum results lasting up to a year.
PRF TREATMENTS
PRF (Platelet-rich fibrin) treatment is an advanced form of PRP. It uses a larger blood sample to create a fibrin matrix enriched with platelets and growth factors. This matrix is injected into areas experiencing hair loss, releasing growth factors over time. PRF treatments generally have a short recovery period, with results lasting up to a year. The treatment takes about 40 minutes, with the number of sessions varying based on individual needs.
HAIR TRANSPLANTS
Hair and Skin Science also excels in hair transplant techniques such as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and NeoGraft transplants. FUE involves the precise extraction and transplantation of hair follicles from a donor area to the thinning or balding regions. NeoGraft enhances this process, automating the
extraction and implantation for improved precision and reduced scarring. While these methods offer rapid recovery and minimal scarring, they may require multiple sessions.
PERSONALISED TREATMENT PLANS
At Hair and Skin Science, the journey for your clients begins with a comprehensive, free consultation to understand each client’s unique needs and desired outcomes. This personalised approach ensures that every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, considering their specific hair and skin goals. This includes a detailed assessment of their scalp, hair texture and hair loss pattern, a custom treatment plan and a tailored home care regimen featuring specific haircare products and supplements that complement the therapy and cater to their unique hair type and needs.
EXPERT STAFF AND CARE
Beyond their commitment to helping their patients achieve their desired results, the team at Hair and Skin Science are skilled staff members and nurses dedicated to providing total care. Their expertise, guided by Jenna Chan’s two decades of experience in the field, ensures that patients are in capable hands.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER A LOST ART IN HAIR?
Playing with colour and trying new formulas.
HOW HAVE WE SEEN HAIR COLOURING CHANGE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS?

High impact, creamy, lived in blonde.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BIGGEST MONEY-MAKING TIP FOR 2024?
I have battled with a poverty mindset most of my life and only in the last three years, though following my heart’s greatest desires, have I been led to an abundant mindset. WHAT HAS CHANGED INSIDE YOUR SALON FOUR WALLS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS?
Just about everything! We just signed a lease to a brand new 336 square metre space in Footscray. Melbourne here we come in 2024! BUSINESS INSIGHTS FOR 2024.
SELF-MADE MAN
Men’s coach David Berriman set out on a journey back in 2019 to help men have better relationships with themselves, make clearer decisions and in-turn achieve more success in life and business. Fast forward past the first Self-MadeMan Warrior Retreat™, it’s little wonder David coaches hundreds of men to unblock past limitations, writes Cameron
Pine
There’s no denying that when we make clear and focused decisions we make more money, but how do we do this when we have old habits and emotional baggage that’s often from past experiences, relationship patterns or limiting business beliefs holding us ransom?
If clarity is what you’re seeking for a new year in your life in all areas, then acknowledging your old patterns is the first step where many of us get stuck, and this is where David’s strength as a coach comes into play.
Through resilience, empathy and acknowledgement it’s no wonder the first Self-Made-Man Warrior Retreat™ on the Northern Rivers over November 17 to 19 was a resounding success and, judging by the feedback and life-changing sentiments from each of the ten men involved, we should expect to see the next one coming our way soon.
While an intimate group gathered at a magic plot of land near Nimbin with just a few words of advice before beginning, they tapped into the best of the best in terms of resources and ongoing training advice developed by David and his Self-MadeMan property.
With a clear mission to release stress, re-build confidence and up every level of their lives, the by-product is also new relationships and support to carry through their next chapter of their lives while showing up better in life and business. From all walks of life and backgrounds, the success comes from unity, something many of us don’t struggle with professionally but may struggle with
personally. Built on creating true leaders, the idea of the Self-Made-Man is applicable to any industry or individual wanting to gain a better result than the current.
Before kicking off the two days each guest was asked to rate out of ten their strongest and weakest points for a variety of touchpoints including; physical health, mental and emotional health, financial, relationships, personal development, career, spiritual fulfilment as well as time and presence. By doing this exercise each individual was better able to see the areas in their life their lack courage confidence and strength to work on in more detail over the next two days.
It was then time to determine the signs and symptoms that cause these patterns – many resulting from circumstantial situations or a lack of ability to deal with personal issues or in some cases a lack of diagnosis or the easy default to become the victim.
Uncovering some of these limiting beliefs before launching into the physical activities and acknowledgement side of things, it was important for each and every ‘warrior’ to tap into their true responsibility to themselves as a being as well as throw away some of the old values and beliefs that were holding them back.
“Understanding the five primary drivers behind why and listening to your body – our feelings drive our behaviour and we can override our feelings to get the result we want,” David said. “The warrior re-birth retreat ensures you let go of the old you and old energy and implores a higher sense of grounding and a connected state.”
From the retreat to a constantly building network of men showing up for a better life, David’s mission is also to help men understand their key avoidance patterns in life that can be anything from food to drug use and addictions that stop us from moving ahead in life. If we deal with these avoidance patterns, even in business we will do a lot better overall, even if just one trigger point at a time.
These patterns flow through from business life to personal – we can avoid and fall in the same ill-communication traps with our teams or work as well and this is where we start to plat the blame game and the victim. Rising above the trivial is the only way we learn to uncover our full potential, according to David and his team of awakened men.
“All men in attendance set clear goals, implemented better structure into their lives as they now walk to path to becoming a self-actualised, self-empowered and self-made warrior,” he shared.
David was joined by coach Steve McNamara who implemented a host of physical and spiritual exercises on the group – there was tough love, tears and an unlocking of inner strength that’s only realised with a true combination of physical and emotional exercises. The group was pushed harder through pain and past old habits to realise just how powerful they really are.
If you’re a business owner, entrepreneur or just need to take back more power in your life – get in touch with David and prepare for the next retreat or the next round of immersive training and events within David’s realm.

MOMENTS OF MAGNIFICENCE
Akin to your own private island and a nod to that distinct ‘Wabi-Sabi’ notion of life, Micalo Yamba is a fortunate journey in design that transcends the limitation. Unlike many luxurious stays, you will fully languish in every aspect of Micalo’s sprawling expanses and make memories that are none other than magnificently yours, writes Cameron Pine
There are few venues with the unlimited versatility and that dreamy feel like Micalo, whether it’s a family stay, a special occasion or a large-scale event, Micalo Yamba is a highly personalised labour of love, a design journey of individuality and an execution of eccentricity we can all enjoy and learn from.
Positioned almost in two parallel worlds – the warmth and welcome of a mountain lodge at this 100 acre lot is fused with the relaxed whimsy of that beachside white-washed linen blowing in the breeze. If you were to summarise these two highly sensual yet conflicting silhouettes at once, Micalo is your clarity.

At Micalo, the interior design is a little off centre, an escape from the regular and a lesson in how to avoid brand or design exhaustion. No corner, room, picture or décor piece at Micalo is positioned how we are often used to – the hardest part is deciding which room suits you best or how to spend your time in one of the various zones for entertainment or relaxation in a destination built for a multitude of uses.
When you think of a small beachside town like Yamba, the mind immediately jumps to beachside boho furnishings, a coat of fresh white pain and that rustic or rusty seaside finish, a token ocean print or that pared back vibe we are so often used to by the water – but not at Micalo. Its mountain lodge meets European library surrounded by that very unique lifestyle thousands flock to northern NSW for each year.
Micalo has a moody disposition but cuts out the serious for loads of fun at every corner with an inherent juxtaposition of trend and touch, the old and new and the balance of shape, texture and order. Its owners and designers have poured countless hours and energy into to ensure there is nothing quite like it.
“Every single guest so far has even said it’s much nicer than the images and website portrays - we have poured our health and soul into Micalo. It is definitely a labour of love,” said owner Taliah Lowry.
Guests can expect a private sanctuary for an entire family or a group of friends. It really is up to each guest to make the most of every space that leaves no stone unturned. Where most luxury accommodation skimps in some areas, Micalo turns up the velocity to ensure you are left in awe over every single experience. Picking up where personal service often falls short, every element has been heart-designed by its owner.
More detail ensures the need for more maintenance, yet Micalo is flawlessly expressed and articulated every step of the way. Convenience and placement has won the long-winded battle to cost at Micalo in what one would say is the ultimate muse to your dreamy desires in a holiday.
Beyond the headstone welcoming guests at 60 Micalo lies pristine surrounds, mature trees, a golf course, putt putt, a volleyball set up, half-court basketball grounds, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, table tennis, a sauna with built in Sonos stereo and a heated pool and a spa at a toasty 40 degrees. There’s plenty to do at Micalo, and that’s beyond the walls of an incredibly open plan home design that maximises the outside in from whatever perspective.
Inside, the silhouettes and textiles are a play between black and moody accents, natural woods, stone and furnishings from modern to almost antique sitting side by side in harmony. Flooded with natural light, skylights in the bathrooms and lots of space, Micalo has taken the time and energy to achieve mood lighting everywhere, not just indoors but also out into the various entertainment spaces, such as

fire pits and custom daybeds. The festoon lights over an outdoor under the stars dining experience just adds fun to a very sophisticated home.
Explore scent with Le Labo body care in every wet area and meander table after table with magazines and books in any genre. The true showpiece being is the four-metre-plus custom designed coffee table and lounge suite designed for lazing around among a smattering of luxury textiles – linens, wool and luxury fabrics that continue to each and every bedroom and seat in the home. A homage to a library type atmosphere, it’s no wonder Micalo is highly reviewed, and families and large groups are welcome, including your beloved pet on request.
Somehow perfecting that delicate balance between privacy and a feeling of community, each area of the home, including the round breakfast bar table, has been designed with a sense of community, love and care – indicative of the very name itself. Timber beams, soft lighting and adjustability in everything speaks to everyone’s personal style of living.
Capturing the true essence of the northern rivers, the relaxed offerings of nearby Yamba is only minutes away, but Micalo also has the vibe

of a private island estate where nobody can be seen. It’s no wonder the website is scattered with glowing reviews of guests saying it’s the best family holiday or stay they’ve ever had, with entertainment and nirvana on tap for everyone on board.
Six king bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a separate out house or studio with a master king, two singles and sprawling bunks that encompass an entire wall, it really is a wonderland for all creatures great and small. You can even explore every edge of the property on the complimentary golf buggy.
With years of love and experience invested into the project, the layered home took two years to build, with an entire year of planning before the building process began to ensure it was as unique as originally envisioned.
“We spent countless hours of sourcing and researching to create unique spaces
within the one home,” Taliah said. “Sourcing unique one-off pieces from all over the world, designing and having most of the furniture custom made was a long process but worth the result especially when guests appreciate the dream is in the detail.”
Taliah and her husband Sein Lowry were definitely a dynamic duo through every step of the project – as the co-founders of Byron Beach Abodes, the couple is very much the vision reflected within Byron Beach Abodes’ unique offering in the market. This same team are also responsible for the renovation rebuild of the sophisticated staycation mecca, The Bower Byron Bay.
Taliah was born on Legian Beach in Indonesia and was living abroad by the age of 12. Being exposed to the rawness of India, North America, including California, Washington State, Hawaii,
and, of course, her hometown of Byron Bay in Australia has no doubt distinctly influenced her style, whimsy and appreciation of the eclectic.
The duo, having spent time between Byron Bay and New Zealand, alongside Micalo, have also recently built properties ‘The Lodge’ and ‘The Cabin’. Their styles combine that beachside feel that Sein has experienced since growing up in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with a real deep influence from cultures beyond what we usually see in one location.
Greg Lyons is behind the build. Beyond just a builder, Greg is responsible for ensuring the magic of unique spaces and, with that, the vision Taliah and Sein had for Micalo was realised. The home’s architecture was driven by John Burgess, while the interiors and fit out were very much a passion project beyond convention for Taliah. With a personal passion that drew blood at almost every step, Taliah also worked with Belle Hemming Bright who helped sourced a lot of the vintage art, treasures and fabrics. Based in Melbourne, she brought that international old-world feel to a commonly stark beachside aesthetic.
You’ll also find hand-made ceramics and varying bathroom tiles from green marble, whitewash grey stone, to traditional shapes and timbers that seem to celebrate the ancient philosophy of the Wabi-Sabi and its appreciation of the art deco. Hanging bedside, pendants and lamps from ultra-modern to art deco and everything in between change room to room. Wool loop rugs, statement tapware with an old-world charm and custom daybeds, linen and velvety textiles in juxtaposition, furniture and so much more – it’s more than you’d ever expect from accommodation.
Merging luxury with leisure, Micalo was built with health and wellbeing in mind, it’s a place that could be used as a retreat for family and friends or corporate gatherings. Originally the studio was going to be a hot Pilates room but Taliah decided they needed the extra space for accommodation and fun. Having a pool, spa, sauna and an ice bath coming soon, Taliah is constantly looking for ways to enhance the experience.
Taliah and her husband are one of the few artisans left that pour personal love and care into a destination that’s open to everyone. If that me-too style holiday accommodation is your pet-hate, Micalo is your muse.

THE CENTRE FOR MEDICAL AESTHETICS SYDNEY
A leader that’s changing the landscape of the Sydney aesthetics industry has recently relocated to an intimate terrace that speaks to its trusted and holistic approach upheld by Doctor Amy Chahal. With a service approach for others to follow, you’ll discover why The Centre For Medical Aesthetics in Sydney’s Surry Hills is the go-to for both consumers and industry leaders,
writes Cameron Pine
With an inherent and heartfelt mission to make a difference to the often perceived unnatural and aggressive approach to cosmetic treatments as well as the fads often hyped up by some clinics and the media, Dr Amy’s approach is fundamentally different, and so too is her clinic.
On Sydney’s Riley street amidst an urban mix of residential buildings, leading salons and commercial businesses, the new multi-level home for the TMCA brand defies tradition both online and off. A star favourite on the You Beauty podcast, Dr Amy is regularly called upon for perspective and commentary. Not only is she a cosmetic doctor but she’s an expert in skin, tending to reject fad treatments. Dr Amy is quick
to recommend other treatments such as Morpheus 8, Facetite and a host of other skin maintenance programs including laser skin peels, light therapy or LED therapy, which are on offer and in conjunction with the best approach to face shape at TCMA.
“TCMA is a real oasis in Surry Hills. At 153 square metres and over multiple zones, I wanted it to feel more like a home with multiple lounge spaces and levels. Importantly, I didn’t want it to feel clinical. I wanted it to feel warm and welcoming – a real family environment," she said.
Walls of white with scalloped plastering for texture, wooden floors, natural light and lots of doors and windows make TMCA feel more like a terrace for living than a clinic. It’s on-trend with the quintessential boucle couch, personalised art plus the latest technology including the most comfortable clinic bed in the business.
For Dr Amy it’s about face type and a combination of the latest technology –INMode being one of her key partners for minimally invasive procedures that are great for skin and not just face shape. She also regularly speaks on behalf of Skinceuticals – a L’Oréal owned juggernaut in skincare as well as Alma laser.
“We are all about the quiet luxury of having good skin and to recommend facials
at the right stages of treatments or other procedures to enhance the treatment. We are about modalities that suit the person over time,” she said.
Dr Amy has expertise, integrity and gumption, and is even the only female Porsche race car driver in Australia. She loves her tech and her science in more ways than one – her hands are not just skilful with faces it seems. Backed by the training and years of expertise at all the right touchpoints, she worked in surgical training for steven years before opening her clinic.
Dr Amy is a key opinion leader in minimally invasive procedures from podcasts to professional speaking. She attends and presents at professional conferences discussing the latest techniques and technologies and sharing her knowledge with other doctors and peers in the industry. She’s also an Ambassador for industry leading brands including Skinceuticals, InMode, ZO Skin Health by Zein Obagi and Alma. As a clinician, she simply spends time with people rather than pumping out a service they request, which results in really understanding and building trust and loyalty with people.

NEW HEIGHTS
Silver Bullet’s latest innovations speak to the power of technology, with high-tech, travel friendly tools soaring into 2024.
Silver Bullet is continuing to change the way hairdressers and clients style, with a significant 2024 focus on how we style in transit. The Australian owned and designed brand is revolutionising the concept of travel-friendly hair styling tools, with a range of 2024 launches designed for portability, exclusively distributed by Dateline Imports. Silver Bullet builds on a 30-year legacy committed to creating hotter, faster, and better styling tools across the market, and the new launches add to that prestige, with a particular focus on styling on-the-go.
The brand has considered elevated global travel and the need for convenient, travel-friendly tools, with an ever-constant focus on professional hair. These modern launches are debuting in Australia in the first quarter of 2024.
The Silver Bullet Hi-Flyer Full-Sized Travel Dryer is a headlining arrival within these new releases, replacing the old Andiamo Foldable Compact hair dryer in a new glossy metallic gold colour with the Andiamo’s unique folding handle. The foldable, compact design allows the full-sized dryer to become the ideal travel companion, while also boasting two heat and speed settings, a cold shot button, a 17,000 rpm DC motor, 16 m/s air speed, 84dB noise level and two concentrator nozzle attachments.
Next, the Silver Bullet SuperStar MultiStyler has had a modern revamp with upgraded curling attachments. The left and right air curling barrels are now longer with a 135mm length to improve the use for longer hair lengths, adding to the power of the myriad of removable styling attachments in an overall compact, versatile tool that can be packed with minimal space.
The Silver Bullet Runway Mini Hair Dryer is a carry on essential, housed in a metallic gold colour, with a foldable handle design, compact size and dual voltage, and a 22,000 rpm DC motor and 12 m/s air speed that packs power despite its smaller size. The dryer also has two speed and heat settings, a concentrator nozzle and diffuser attachment, 84dB noise level and comes with a black satin pouch.
The tool pairs perfectly with the new Runway Mini Hair Straightener as the ultimate Silver Bullet Styleaway Travel Duo. The straightener has a compact size with ceramic tourmaline coated plates and heats up to 220°C for optimum performance, to take professional hair results wherever you go. An 88mm plate size and 230mm long straightener body is the ideal size for effective and convenient travel-friendly style.
The brand puts a spotlight on futuristic styling capabilities with the Asteria Straightener, featuring new intelligent sensing technology. BRAIN CHEMISTRY
Lisa Conway shares her personal journey to show how looking after our mind and body is our best investment.
The universe has a knack of getting your attention, and for good reason. I found this out for myself in 2023, when I was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD). Being diagnosed at 59 has been life changing. I feel like I’ve finally experienced what calm feels like for the first time, knowing that any additional feelings of anxiety have been warranted for good reason.
Looking back, it is pretty easy to see that my health was heading in the wrong direction. It was a gentle decline, but a decline nonetheless. I was feeling anxious in situations that had never phased me before - from driving my car to catching a plane. I found myself avoiding people and events - both things I used to love. Mentally, I couldn’t process the sensory overload, and I found myself feeling more and more unhappy.
Mental health didn’t become an issue for me until my fifties. That’s when I started seeing my GP, an endocrinologist, a gastroenterologist, and a clinical psychologist. I remember thinking to myself, who else do I need to be seeing - a vet?
I remember my psychologist asked me if I›d ever been assessed for ADD. I didn›t really know too much about what ADD was at that point, apart from what I›ve heard in a few conversations I›d had with salon owners about their kids who had been diagnosed. It felt too late for me, but I got the referral and made my appointment.
I love my ADD, and medication hasn’t taken any of my super-powers away. ADD is a superpower in my line of work. We juggle things all day every day, when not everyone can. Then, we pack up, go home, and do the same for the kids.
The wait time for my appointment was nine months. During this time, I stumbled across a Facebook post for an app called Reframe, for those wanting to drink less and better their health, and I joined this group of like-minded people. I didn’t know at the time but, looking back, I now
ADD is a superpower in my line of work. We juggle things all day every day, when not everyone can.
know I was a binge drinker. To be a binge drinker, I always thought you had to drink to excess - apparently not. No drinks all week was easy, but I would drink on Friday night and undo all the good work I’d done during the week, from the breathing exercises and sessions in the gym to the yoga and the healthy food. Every weekend, I woke up riddled with shame, full of self-sabotage and self-loathing.
I always convinced myself I didn’t have a problem, but joining Reframe helped me to see that I did. I became a complete non-drinker. I’ve not drank since. My one-year anniversary of my sobriety will be April 16.
The daily Zoom catch ups support me to thrive, and the giving and receiving of unconditional support to and from this community has given me purpose. Yes, I miss drinking at times, and still have walk away moments I see as an exam I get to pass. My mental health has gone from strength to strength because I am now self-aware. I have removed the weekly dose of shame and replaced it with a practice of self-love.
Along the way, throughout my mental health journey, I’ve learned many other things, such as being more discerning about unhealthy food and preservatives and the dangers of screen time. I’ve learned it’s important to develop new healthy brain habits, with brain exercises, books and puzzles. I’ve also learned to challenge your negative thoughts, which I do in writing every day. Importantly, I’ve seen it’s important to challenge the unhealthy habits sold to us as ‘normal’, and that we can heal and rewire our brains.
It’s still early days for me, though all of my efforts so far to eliminate anything that compromises my brain health has made a noticeable change. I finally feel I am returning to my old self. Although I am not sure I will ever appreciate moderation, I have experienced calm and its wonderful - so wonderful, in fact, that just had to share this with you.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE LANDSCAPE
Let’s dive into the dynamic evolution of the salon world. With hair enthusiasts craving more convenience, our payment methods are in for a remarkable makeover. A major 40 per cent of online bookings are now scheduled outside business hours. Also, in-salon re-bookings are dropping below 50 per cent. There’s a digital revolution happening in the hair and beauty space.

How do we stay authentic and honest with our vision in business? Asks
Jake Putan
What is the driver that leads to such events of inauthenticity or a lack of personal boundaries? As I began diving into this topic, ironically, I experienced becoming that driver firsthand.
Demand from clients significantly increased over the last few weeks of 2023. I feel like I have good boundaries for the most part, but my capacity was certainly being stretched. I noticed I became exposed to listening to excessive information from clients during the day. I’d finish work, clean up, and head back into the house with my family. There was a summery, social vibe with the warm weather and everyone else on holidays. I noticed a sense of ‘missing out’ if I decided to go meditate to decompress instead of being involved and socialising with everyone.
The problem with this is that the information overload started to compound. I noticed myself going beyond my capacity and I noticed an internal desire to escape the amount of noise going on, through increasing my consumption of food and drinks then scrolling social media.
I was observing this pattern many of us get stuck in, where there is no end to the behaviour loop and the overwhelming amounts of noise. Then, as a result, we end up in autopilot just to cope, and that often looks like repeating other people’s phrases or ideas, being inauthentic just to fit in, doing and saying mundane things or being dishonest, as it seems easier, because taking conscious action in those moments feels like even more mental strain
that isn’t even available to us since we’re way over capacity. Thankfully, I’d ensured to take three weeks off after that point to give myself the mental space to reassess my position and centralise. I want to make it clear that, while I advocate for sustainable business principles, I’m sharing this message because I’ve had to learn the hard way, I am definitely still human and I also experience these things from time to time.
So how do we ensure, to the best of our ability, not to get caught in these loops?
It starts with saying no to things that don’t align. It involves taking small conscious actions while we have the capacity to make those choices, or implementing one small change at a time while we are amidst the heat of it all.
• It starts with setting our work hours.
• It starts with setting time for breaks during the day.
• It starts by pre-organising the food you’re going to eat.
• It starts by keeping a two litre bottle of water on hand.
• It starts by setting screen-time limits to be off your phone.
• It starts by setting time in your calendar to meditate and journal.
These are small habits that lead to big change. They help us stay authentic, make conscious choices and be genuine and honest because we have maintained the capacity to do so. It means saying no to things that are outside our capacity.

GROWTH IN 2024
It’s the beginning of a new year which means now is the time to look at your business and create a plan for the year. If you want to grow your salon in 2024, here’s how to do it, writes Kamrin Hira .
CREATE LOYAL CLIENTS
Loyal clients are essential to the growth of any salon, spa or clinic. It costs much less to keep an existing client than to attract a new one, and loyal clients are the most likely to recommend you to their friends, family and grow your business by word-of-mouth.
Your salon software should have features specifically designed to help you create loyal clients, such as an integrated loyalty program to track and reward client spend at your salon, or even offering discounted concessions for your services that require regular visits. Concession sales provide income in advance and help create a habit of repeat appointments. Making concessions more appealing for your clients by offering an incentive such as ‘ten services for the price of nine’ is a great way to promote lasting loyalty.
FOCUS ON MARKETING FUNDAMENTALS
Great marketing will help you attract new clients, retain existing ones and even open up unexpected opportunities to grow your business and brand.
Make sure you look at your online presence—is your website up-to-date with all your services and pricing, along with any promotions you might be running? Add a button for your online booking page and make it easy for clients to contact you by ensuring your phone number, email address and contact form are correct and easy to find.
You can also consider making email marketing a focus in 2024. Emails are a great way to stay in touch with your clients when they’re not in the salon chair. Take the time to set up email marketing templates that can be used time and time again, and use your salon software to automate things such as reminders, thank-yous and birthday messages.
SELL MORE RETAIL PRODUCTS
Retail sales can make a huge contribution to your profits and are an important part of caring for your clients between visits.
One way to sell more retail products is to become an expert. Learn everything you can about the products you stock and share your expert knowledge freely with your clients. There are a lot of products to learn about so make learning easy by focusing on a product each week or month and holding a quick team training session on all the products’ benefits and which type of clients they should recommend them to.
It costs much less to keep an existing client than to attract a new one, and loyal clients are the most likely to recommend you to their friends, family and grow your business by word-of-mouth.
You’ll want to follow up a push in upselling retail with a sound stock management process. Your salon software should allow you to easily track the stock you hold, provide information on the most sold products to identify which ones need to be purchased more often, and even automate stock ordering with your supplier for you.
ENGAGE YOUR STAFF
It’s proven that happy, engaged staff make for happy, loyal clients, so not only is creating a positive working environment for your staff going to ensure they stick around, it’s also going to reflect positively on your business.
One way to engage your team is to share your strategy and come up with a business-wide target. It’s great having personal goals and targets but shared targets can also unite a team towards achieving something together. For example, create a shared target to increase your rebooking rate by having each team member ask their clients to rebook. This will encourage your team to support each other in the goal as they’re all working towards it together. If your team achieves the goal together, make sure you celebrate together too!
Finally, remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was your salon! It takes time to create a great workplace, and while you cannot expect success immediately, you will get there with a strong business plan, organised marketing strategy and a powerful team to back you.

ONLINE DANGERS
BizCover explains why your beauty business may be more vulnerable to data breaches and cyberattacks than you might realise.
Cybercriminals love small businesses. A cybercrime was reported to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) every six minutes in 2023. That’s 23 per cent more cyberattacks than the ACSC saw the year before, with many targeting Australia’s small business community.
BizCover, Australia’s leading online small business insurance provider, reveals why salons may be prime targets for cybercriminals and how salon owners can manage the financial fallout of a cyber incident.
WHY SMALL BUSINESSES?
Cyberattacks on big corporations regularly make the news, but that doesn’t mean your salon is safe. Small businesses are often preferred by cybercriminals because they are typically easier targets.
Many small businesses are unprepared for a cyberattack for a variety of reasons. You may not have time to educate yourself and your staff on how to spot common threats. Cybersecurity might also feel like a low priority when you have so much else to do just to keep your salon running.
Your salon may also rely on outside suppliers and partners. Cybercriminals can use these relationships to hack into systems, initiate unauthorised money transfers, or steal data.
Even if you take cybersecurity seriously, you might not have the budget to protect your business properly. An ACSC survey found that 48 per cent of small businesses spent less than $500 on cybersecurity each year.
Finally, if a cyberattack happens to your salon, you may not know who to contact for assistance. Finding and hiring an IT professional takes time, which could create a costly delay in reopening your doors.
WHAT CAN SALON OWNERS DO?
It may seem impossible for salon owners to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals, but even small steps could help you avoid many attacks.
Learning how to spot common cyberattacks, threats, and scams is a great place to start. Recognising dodgy emails, messages, and calls may make you less likely to become a cybercrime statistic. There are many free resources available on the www.cyber.gov.au website that can help you educate yourself and your staff.
Protecting your systems is another important step, as well as installing a firewall and anti-virus protection. Promptly install security updates on your salon’s devices, including
your computers, mobile phones, tablets, and POS devices. Also, consider backing up your business files regularly to help avoid data loss.
If your budget allows, consider talking to a cybersecurity expert. They can help you better secure your salon’s systems and provide more tips for staying cyber-safe.
CREATE A SAFETY NET WITH CYBER LIABILITY INSURANCE
It may seem impossible for salon owners to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals, but even small steps could help you avoid many attacks.
Cyberattacks can be expensive. Cybercrimes reported to the ACSC in 2023 cost small businesses an average of $46,000 per incident. That’s no small amount for many small businesses and could be devastating for your salon. But this is where Cyber Liability insurance could come in handy.
A Cyber Liability policy covers losses from claims arising from data breaches, business interruption and remediation costs following an actual or threatened data breach. Should your salon be targeted, despite your best efforts, a policy could help you cover many expenses associated with the cyberattack, from investigating how the incident happened to notifying affected customers.
Cyber Liability insurance can also help you manage business interruption costs, which are often overlooked following a cyberattack. Your policy could help you cover things like rent, utilities, and lost income if your salon is forced to temporarily shut down until the cyber incident is resolved.
Cyber Liability insurance can also help you contain and recover from a cyberattack. Many policies offer 24-hour incident response services that policyholders can call on for immediate assistance. These services can help you reduce the impact of the attack and get your salon back to business as usual faster.
Cyberattacks may be dramatic, but Cyber Liability insurance can help your salon manage the impact so you can focus on running your business. BizCover has helped over 8,500 salon owners† compare and buy small business insurance in minutes.
