INTERIOR: BODHI YALLINGUP

ONE WITH NATURE

The brand new BODHI Yallingup is luxurious but understated, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

BODHI Spa has well and truly cemented itself as the must-visit spa destination in Western Australia. Founders Danny and Tania Taylor opened their first spa in 2007, creating a place to take a pause; an oasis of calm to escape, retreat and revitalise – naturally. 15 years later and the couple have just opened their sixth BODHI spa in the beach town of Yallingup.

“With custom interior design by Pattern Studio, BODHI Yallingup is our most considered wellness offering yet. With a $2 million fit-out, every single detail has been thought of,” explains Tania. “Nature has been integral to the layout and palette of BODHI Yallingup. Floor to ceiling windows and a water-fronting yoga studio, relax lounge and terrace, allow a palpable connection to the natural surroundings. Skylights bring natural light into a curved central corridor, and the neutral, warm palette is inspired by the pristine coastal Margaret River region, providing a beautiful sense of place.”

Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain were the creative minds and Principals at Pattern Studio, and worked closely with the BODHI team. “Elegant treatment rooms, understated yet luxurious bath houses, and a sumptuous relaxation lounge have been conceptualised with timeless, rather than trend-driven, design in mind,” says Lily, “The spaces feature some exquisite furnishings and fittings; think contemporary European furnishings, Australian artwork, and handmade ceramic light fittings.

“It’s hard to pick one favourite room or corner of the spa,” says Tania, “although the outlook over Lake Gunyulgup from the luxury relax lounge and terrace is especially tranquil. This spring fed lake was a traditional camping spot and area of significance for the Wardandi Noongar Moort families, moving along inland and coastal trails. Fittingly for a spa, the word Gunyulgup means ‘place of rest’.”

But it’s not just the look of the spa that was important to the team; sustainability played an integral role. “BODHI has a tread lightly approach. It has a passive solar design, and solar panels on the roof meet the bulk of the spa’s energy needs, and a 220 thousand litre rainwater tank provides the spa’s water,” explains Tania, but as with most builds, it didn’t come without its challenges.

“It was a race against the clock! After five beautiful years at Injidup Spa Retreat, the move to our own stand-alone spa BODHI Yallingup needed to adhere to a tight timeline, in order to service ongoing BODHI guest bookings. Faced with severe labour and building material shortages in Western Australia, we were very fortunate to work with a team of builders, trades people and suppliers that pulled out all the stops to achieve our Monday 26th September opening, working all hours, seven days a week and even on public holidays. We were blown away by the commitment of the team working on the project to bring it all together on time.”

This being their sixth spa opening, the duo behind BODHI have learned a thing or two throughout the past few years. “You need the right partners on site for the build – especially given the current labour and material shortages in Australia. And it will always cost more than you think!

And whilst we know spa, engaging interior design specialists has enabled BODHI to evolve our aesthetic and the flow of the guest journey to the next level, comparable to the most luxurious wellness experiences,” says Danny. And luxurious, it definitely is.
