Conference
The IPG biennial conference
On Friday 10th November, The IPG’s eagerly awaited biennial conference got off to a sunny start at the picturesque Hotel Meliá Villaitana in Alicante. This year’s event focused on Livin’ the Crazy Life with many of you joining us alongside suppliers and award-winning installers to enjoy two days of networking, inspiration and advice from renowned speakers. Comedian Shappi Khorsandi kicked off day one with her razor-sharp wit and memorable personality. This was closely followed by Nigel Risner whose animated presentation brought out the inner animal in us. We ended the day with some fun in the sun, as delegates took part in our charity piñata challenge raising a fantastic £547 for Missing People #FindEveryChild. Amazing prizes sponsored by suppliers were up for grabs, such as a helicopter sightseeing tour, a supercar driving experience and rugby tickets! 03 | The Outlet
The clock was ticking on day two as attendees took part in the Talking Point activity. Suppliers had 10 minutes to wow members before the timer went off and it was all change – this proved to be the perfect catalyst to strengthen existing business relationships and build new ones. After an intense morning of valuable networking, The IPG presentation was the ideal way to reflect on how the business has evolved over the last 10 years and reiterate our ongoing commitment to each of you. During the video, we showcased some of the newest dual branded stores and shared some of The IPG’s exciting plans for 2024, including expanding the installer network. The full presentation is available on the portal if you would like to show your team.
The knowledgeable Lucy James closed the afternoon by sharing her insights on recruitment and how to become a magnet for great hires – an issue faced by numerous businesses. Barney Jones from ASE Plumbing & Heating Supplies joined Lucy on stage to share his firsthand experience of the matter and how, with Lucy’s help, he feels they have now enhanced their recruitment strategy. The weekend culminated in a lavish gala dinner including a passionate performance from flamenco dancers. This provided the perfect opportunity for members and suppliers to network and relax in the idyllic Spanish surroundings one last time. A gallery of photos from the event can be found on the portal – if you have any images you’d like us to add please send these to marketing@the-ipg.co.uk

Installer journey
Installer journey Building a community of installers…
Establishing a strong installer community is a strategic initiative that the group believes will greatly benefit both the installers and our members and suppliers. This approach involves fostering relationships, encouraging collaboration and providing tangible benefits for them to choose The IPG member stores and websites over competitors. In 2024, you will see The IPG sponsoring industry awards, actively participating in trade exhibitions and facilitating direct interactions with installers through our various marketing activities. Sponsoring industry awards and celebrating the achievements of outstanding plumbing, heating and bathroom installers can serve as a powerful motivator for them to align themselves with our group. Attending relevant trade exhibitions is another effective method to connect with our target audience. These events provide opportunities for networking, sharing knowledge and showcasing our suppliers’ latest products and technologies. Following our successful exhibiting last year, we are actively participating in The Installer Show again this year, where we will engage with them and communicate the benefits of choosing members stores and websites for their plumbing, heating and bathroom supplies. In addition to sponsoring awards and attending exhibitions, our recent initiative of taking award-winning installers to our conference served as a valuable chance for them to connect directly with our partners - fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration.
The current Trade Local Day pop-up is only a representation and is subject to change.

And finally, we have created a special date in the calendar to create a significant impact and generate excitement within your communities. On 9th September we will be promoting a Trade Local day – which will be dedicated to encouraging the trade to exclusively shop with their local independent IPG member.
We will create a buzz around the event through social media campaigns, email newsletters, competitions and targeted advertising that will help build anticipation and engagement amongst your current and potential customers. On the day, we will look to our suppliers to offer additional discounts, host information workshops or feature product demonstrations. The goal is to make this annual calendar day both memorable and rewarding for tradespeople who choose to support their local IPG member.
Building a community is a long-term endeavour and therefore consistent communication is crucial. The integration of our new and robust Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system allows us to gather valuable insights into installer behaviour, preferences and their responses to our marketing initiatives. This data driven approach empowers us to tailor our communication strategies, ensuring our messages resonate effectively with the installer and wider trade community. Recognising the value of understanding these habits and preferences, the group has partnered with advertising allies in the industry. As part of this initiative, we have already executed two competitions with them, resulting in the acquisition of nearly 1,000 leads. These competitions not only serve as engaging events for our target audience, but also provide a platform for us to gather information and build a comprehensive database of qualified leads. We are standing on the brink of numerous opportunities; the future holds great excitement for us all!
By consistently promoting and building excitement around this special calendar day, the group reinforces the importance of supporting local independents. Over time, this initiative can become a tradition that is eagerly anticipated. The Outlet | 06

Installer story
Installer story Meet Carl Ladd The 2023 IPG conference marked a significant milestone as it was the first to welcome a larger gathering than our usual members and suppliers. Last year, we took the innovative step of inviting three award winning heating installers to immerse themselves in the dynamic and engaging world of our membership group. Following the event, we had the opportunity to catch up with one of these installers to gain his insights on the substantial value he found in attending. Carl Ladd, a dedicated Heating Installer with a rich background including service in the army, has always been passionate about having a hands-on role throughout his career. His journey began in carpentry, but a challenging accident raised doubts about his future as a skilled craftsman. Displaying remarkable resilience, Carl swiftly pivoted and retrained as a heating engineer. Now, seven years later, his career is adorned with achievements, including winning the Rising Star award through the Heating Installer Awards, collaborating with renowned national businesses, and playing a role in celebrating 10 Years of The IPG in Spain. Carl generously shared his reflections and key learnings from the event, offering us a rare glimpse into an installers view of our tight-knit, yet expansive, community of independent plumbing, heating and bathroom stores. He highlighted the unique blend of competition and cooperation that he witnessed among attendees.
Carl winning the 'Rising Star' category at the 2021 Heating Installer Awards
Carl was particularly impressed by the spirit of camaraderie and openness in sharing trade insights and secrets that he observed among the diverse group of independent stores and suppliers present. He noted, “It wasn’t about various businesses competing for supremacy. Instead, there was a sense of unity and community spirit.” This aspect struck a chord with him, illustrating the groups supportive and collaborative nature.
“It wasn’t about various businesses competing for supremacy. Instead, there was a sense of unity and community spirit.” One of the event standouts for Carl was his participation in the conference’s first “Ten Minutes With…” sessions. These sessions were a vibrant forum for lively debates with suppliers, uncovering industry secrets and techniques he hadn’t been privy to before, and offering a chance to provide his valuable real-world perspective on some suppliers’ products. These interactions were not only enlightening but also sparked considerable thought and reconsideration among some

suppliers. Additionally, Carl engaged in a thought-provoking late night discussion about the industry’s future prospects with one of our renewables suppliers. Carl expressed admiration for the innovative technologies and designs showcased by the suppliers he interacted with. He was particularly impressed by his conversation with Shane, who has successfully refined his heat pump business, Renewable Equipment Solutions, to prioritise quality and efficiency. Another aspect that stood out to Carl was the impressive level of participation in the industry, as evidenced by the large number of independent business owners and suppliers in attendance, all united by a common passion for the trade. Carl is a regular visitor to his own local independent merchant, a testament to his commitment to quality and community. He eagerly anticipates the upcoming innovations and developments that The IPG, with its dynamic and engaged community of independent stores and suppliers, is set to introduce to the industry.

Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes In November we welcomed Andy Cottee to the team as our new Managing Director.
Andy brings with him a wealth of knowledge from over 20 years in the industry, with many members already having had the pleasure of working with him in his previous roles at VentAxia and Anglo Nordic. Andy’s vast experience from manufacturing and distribution to independent businesses and wholesale has provided him with the ideal skill set to understand and support The IPG’s growing network of trading partners. In this issue, Andy will be discussing what his high points have been since joining the team and what exciting developments are coming up in 2024.
“It’s going to be another busy year for us as we continue to develop and grow the group alongside our trading partners.”
How have you found your first couple of months?
Are there any exciting plans you can share for 2024?
Starting in November was the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running. Diving straight in to The IPG Conference gave me a chance to meet a multitude of our valued members and suppliers in fantastic surroundings. It really gave me a feel for how strong our network is and what a fantastic team I have inherited. I’m looking forward to building on these relationships through the coming year.
It’s going to be another busy year for us as we continue to develop and grow the group alongside our trading partners. There is a multitude of new initiatives and developments planned to further support our members and suppliers. This has already started with the recently announced introduction of Band 9 which enables our most collaborative members to achieve even higher rebate opportunities. I am pleased to see that some members have already got off to a flying start to secure this.
What has been your highlight so far? The conference was definitely a key highlight for me as I was able to experience the group in action first hand. I got a chance to talk to attendees about all that we have accomplished so far and see the clear potential for all that we are capable of achieving together. There is an unmistakable passion for the group’s core beliefs and vision that is visible among our members and suppliers, not to mention The IPG team.
There are plans in motion behind the scenes to continue building our relationship with the trade community and reaffirming the reasons why they should shop in member stores. I also look forward to welcoming new members and suppliers throughout the year which will coincide with our plans to grow The IPG team – enabling us to offer additional expertise and support.

Bristan The UK’s market leader for taps and showers boosts their product options.
Bristan is boosting its kitchen tap product range with a host of new and updated product options for 2024. With upgrades to its established and popular Easyfit range, plus brand-new pull-out taps and technology enabled enhancements, Bristan’s updated kitchen tap product offer ensures installers will have all the options covered to meet customers’ needs. First launched over six years ago, Bristan’s Easyfit range is well established as a favourite kitchen tap solution amongst installers due to the speed and ease of installation. Specifically designed to address the challenge of kitchen taps being notoriously fiddly to replace, Easyfit makes light work of every kitchen tap installation with its Top Fix technology and five step process which means kitchen taps can be fitted in a matter of minutes. Adding to the existing product line up for 2024 will be five new designs — Acorn, Fern, Maple, Spruce and Spine (available March 2024), together with new finishes to existing products – Renaissance, Raspberry, Monza, Echo & Cashew (available now). It means in total the Easyfit Kitchen Tap collection will feature 20 product styles in a range of trend-led finishes including Bristan’s signature Chrome, Stainless Steel, Black, Brushed Brass, Gun Metal and Brushed Nickel. In Bristan’s pull-out kitchen tap range, new for January 2024, is the addition of five new designs - Axia, Jule, Sabre, Silhouette and Profile, taking the range line up to nine distinctive product options. A key new product benefit for some of the collection will be the introduction of Bristan’s innovative Eco Start and Thermaclick technology which features selective products offering increased environmental and safety benefits respectively.
The Eco Start feature, available in Maple, Spruce and Pine Easyfit taps and Axia, Jule and Sabre Pull Out kitchen taps, saves energy by ensuring cold water is set as the default central start position of the tap handle, meaning that hot water is only activated when the tap lever is moved from the central position and reduces unnecessary demand on hot water heating systems and energy usage. The Thermaclick feature, available in Maple, Spruce and Pine Easyfit taps, provides enhanced safety feature through the addition of a mid-point click that indicates when the water has reached the optimal temperature for washing your hands — ensuring a safe and comfortable hand washing experience every time. Chris Heath, Kitchen Tap Category Manager at Bristan, says “We want to maintain Bristan’s kitchen tap range as being the go-to product choice for installers. So, we’re incredibly excited to introduce new additions to our collection, including new Easyfit and pull-out taps. “As with all our products, the new designs have been rigorously tested and will be supported by our exceptional guarantees. With our kitchen tap ranges, however, installers can get the very best of Bristan as they’re well-priced, easy to fit, and built to last.”

Plumbing & heating businesses thriving The economic climate for small businesses throughout 2023 has been difficult for many sectors with 2 in 5 fearing closure during the year. According to a report from the Office for National Statistics, 24% of businesses recorded that their turnover had significantly decreased by October 2023. However, this does not seem to be the case for the plumbing and heating industry.
Smart home tech helping to combat the energy crisis With energy bills continuing to soar many homeowners are turning to smart technology to help manage their usage and costs
A study conducted by Drayton Controls and Schneider Electric has shown that almost 74% of British homeowners have had to adapt their behaviour in the last 12 months to reduce their energy bills. This includes 26% now closely tracking their usage and 14% of homeowners willing to invest up to £1,250 on energy efficiency measures such as smart energy monitors and thermostats.
Research conducted by Fair Fix shows a 3% increase in plumbing and heating businesses during 2023. This equates to a total of 44,630 new companies entering the industry, with the largest growth recorded in the West Midlands of 3,420 businesses and the slowest growth being in London. These results aren’t a surprise as they are in line with the substantial rise in plumbers and heating engineers choosing to become self-employed rather than working for larger firms. A trend that looks like it is set to continue through 2024.
Smart heating provides homeowners with far more control over their systems with many having handy apps that can be used on the go. This level of control enables users to track their energy usage carefully, leading to an average saving of 10-20% on household heating bills with the potential of additional savings if multiple rooms are connected or eco modes are activated. More training needed on water fittings regulations The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has undertaken research to assess whether UK plumbers feel there is enough training provided on water fittings regulations. These regulations are a national requirement designed to protect public heath and promote the efficient use of water. The study found that 60% of plumbers agree there should be more detailed training on these regulations in their courses. An overwhelming 91% of approved plumbers also believe that a water fittings regulations training should be mandatory for all plumbers.
The year of luxurious and relaxing bathrooms Last year saw homeowners favouring minimalist, functional bathrooms for their home, with clean lines, natural colours and easily maintained materials. However, as 2024 begins there is a clear shift towards luxury and wellness, incorporating smart technologies and sensory touches to the room. Bold, geometric patterns are taking centre stage to add a dramatic touch to walls and flooring. With 2024’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz, adding a vibrant yet peaceful tone that instils a feeling of warmth and sanctuary to any bathroom space. 25 | The Outlet
Homeowners are opting for a feeling of well-being in their home by creating a spa style setting which awakens the senses featuring smooth textured tiling, high quality furnishings, and for added opulence, built in surround sound. The luxury doesn’t stop here, a recent trend has seen a rise in requests for mini refrigerators and bars to be incorporated in designs.
Ensuring there is enough training on water regulations is paramount, with 55% of the study participants stating that periodic refresher training would guarantee they continue to apply the regulations correctly. Making information available, such as online resources, training videos and quizzes were supported by 50% of plumbers who took the survey. In addition, 40% agreed that more auditing of plumbers would help to make sure that the water fittings regulations are carried out correctly and to a high standard.
Significant increase in Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications In September the Government announced that they were making changes to the grant levels of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme which is in place to support householders to change from fossil fuel heating systems. From the 23rd October 2023 the grant increased to £7,500 for air and ground source heat pumps resulting in a surge of applications.
The importance of storage in bathroom designs Having enough storage in the bathroom is an issue faced by many homeowners. Attempting to create a relaxing, clutter free environment can be difficult to accomplish if space is limited. Making use of every inch of the area while also maintaining a feeling of luxury is key when designing a bathroom. A mixture of tall cabinets and vanity units can provide additional storage options with fitted furniture being a great solution for small
According to the Department for Energy and Net Zero, the week following the increase saw three times more applications than any week prior. This rate has continued since with applications remaining 60% higher than the previous weekly average. This increase is a positive step towards the goal of achieving net-zero. The Government also states that if someone has applied for the grant before the 23rd October, but the installer had not yet fitted the heat pump they can cancel their existing grant and reapply for the increased amount. This will allow many to save up to an additional £2,500 in costs.
bathrooms. Making use of tall units, space above toilets and working fully into corners maximises the use of the space and can offer a streamlined feel in the room. Wall hung units are often a great option to provide the feeling of additional space.
COP28 and the fight against fossil fuels In December The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) took place in Dubai where negotiators from 200 global parties gathered to discuss the “beginning of the end” for the fossil fuel era. The goals to reduce emissions and the use of fossil fuels was reaffirmed and the deadline for achieving net zero by 2050 remained firmly in place. Pressure was applied to accelerate agreed actions, especially the decline of methane emissions by 2030. The UK is considerably behind other countries in rolling out heat pump installations and significantly off the target of 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028. Currently, 1.7 million heat pumps would need to be installed annually until 2036 to fully replace all gas boilers in the UK. This implies that tighter rules will need to start being enforced over the next couple of years as the deadline approaches. Suggestions have been put forward that include energy performance certificates providing accurate information heat pump readiness in homes and the potential of lowering taxes on residential electricity and increasing them on gas.
Incorporating integrated inserts in drawers can offer further organisation options and offers a solution to avoid any cupboard contents becoming dislodged or falling over. Furthermore, many bathroom mirrors now come with Bluetooth and built in speakers which provides an alternative to audio equipment cluttering the area.

Green Electrical & Plumbing Supplies
Green Electrical & Plumbing Supplies opened its doors in May 2022 in Barnsley, offering a vast selection of plumbing, heating and electrical products from their modern trade counter. Not to mention, bringing a lavish, extensive bathroom and lighting showroom to the area. This was closely followed by an additional branch being established in Rotherham, offering more high quality service and industry expertise. We chatted with Lee Green, the owner, to get his insights on bathroom trends for this year and what advice he has for anyone looking to revamp their showroom. How long have you worked in the industry? I joined the industry straight from school as a retail apprentice and have been in it now for over 37 years. Working for independent plumbing and electrical companies throughout my career, has provided me with invaluable experience and grounding. More importantly, it has enabled me to make many friends along the way, with both customers, suppliers and manufacturers. 27 | The Outlet
What makes your showroom stand out from the rest? There are several reasons, firstly, it offers an extensive range of high-quality products, from luxuriously modern showers to traditional high-level toilets, and everything in between. All sourced from The IPG suppliers such as Roman, Imex, Verona, Sonas, Aqualla and Roca to name a few. We've also carefully devised a layout that ensures customers can find exactly what they are looking for easily. Secondly, we provide exceptional customer service, with knowledgeable staff who are always ready to offer their expert advice and guidance. Our showroom manager Peter Green and branch manager Jamie Silver have a combined 43 years in the industry, so in turn have a wealth of experience we can share with our customers. Additionally, our showroom creates a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, making customers feel at ease while exploring the various options available. We also offer a free design service, by creating a detailed 3D CAD design, we bring dream bathrooms to life before installation. We can
also create 2D images and further technical information, to aid the installation and we can work directly with the bathroom fitter to ensure the install runs nice and smoothly. Last but not least, we like to do our own in-house research to constantly keep up with the latest trends and innovations in bathroom design, ensuring that customers have access to the most stylish and cutting-edge products and plans. Overall, here at Green Electrical & Plumbing Supplies, I truly believe we offer a perfect blend of superior experience, combined with top-notch products, excellent service, and a trendy ambiance. It's the go-to place for anyone looking for a stunning new bathroom. How do you create motivation for yourself and your team? I think if you enjoy what you do this is motivation enough, although there is always room for improvement and striving for perfection is the main motivator. We are looking to expand the showroom in 2024 and I know the team are especially excited by this.
Has being part of The IPG helped your business? Being part of the IPG has helped in many ways, most importantly the relationships we have built. The help we have received from Robin and the team, especially with the numerous issues faced in business, cannot go unnoticed. The IPG have been a massive help and I cannot begin to thank them enough. The obvious other benefits include the pricing structures and discounts we enjoy as a member, being part of the group gives us a real competitive edge. What’s in store for Green Electrical & Plumbing Supplies this year? We have recently added a new member of staff to the team Amie Tyler, who joined in
November to help in the showroom with both sales and designs. We’ve also got a new showroom extension that we plan to open in the Spring. What bathroom trends do you think will be popular in 2024? Over the last twelve months we have more than doubled our sales on Multipanel products and with some of their new ranges due out, I can only see wall panels going from strength to strength. Fitted furniture business is another area where we have seen really good growth in 2023 and I believe this will continue to do well in the showroom throughout 2024. There are some clever designs and colours that are new to the market that we are excited to incorporate in our designs. Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of revamping their showroom? Take the time and visit some of the manufacturer’s showrooms that are part of the group – they have some fantastic ranges and it really gives you a feel for the products you will be selling. This is something we are currently doing to get the latest ideas and designs, so we can stay ahead of the competition. It’s also important to make sure that you get the layout and flow of your showroom right. Creating a seamless experience that inspires the customer and helps them visualise their dream bathroom is incredibly important. Charity article
The IPG went crackers in December Our Christmas charity initiative this year saw us going crackers raising money for Missing People #FindEveryChild. Sponsored by our generous suppliers hansgrohe, Imex, Roman, Wavin and Worcester, over seventy-five member stores signed up to take part in the annual event. Jumbo crackers filled with an assortment of vouchers and goodies were delivered to participating stores at the beginning of December for them to raffle tickets to their customers during the festive period. One lucky winner was drawn at each location on the 21st December, who then got to pull the cracker and win the full contents just in time to enjoy over Christmas.
G&M Plumbing & Heating
Money raised from the raffle was donated to our charity partner and we are pleased to announce that collectively, we have now raised a whopping £50,000 since our partnership began. Thank you to every member store that took part in the event – without fundraisers like you Missing People would not be able to continue their invaluable work supporting families dealing with the heartbreak of a missing child. With over 320,000 missing incidents reported each year, half of which are children, raising funds like this is of vital importance for Missing People to be able to continue their hard work. During 2022-2023 we helped the charity achieve the following: • • • • •

JP Heating & Bathrooms
Founded in 2015, JP Heating & Bathrooms have two branches located in Teignmouth and Newton Abbot that offer the trade and homeowners competitive pricing and fast, reliable service. This combined with the vast experience among the team enables them to advise and support customers no matter the size of the job. We spoke to John Pavey, one of the owners of JP Heating & Bathrooms, to find out what he believes helps to make an independent business a success. How long have you worked in the industry? I have been in the heating and bathroom industry for over fifty years, starting initially as a branch under manager. I then went on to work as a representative for a national company and then in 1992 I opened my first independent in Exeter - which I ran for twenty years before selling for a good price. After a six month break I registered JP Heating & Bathrooms and now we have two successful branches.
What is your secret to JP Heating & Bathrooms’ success? I feel to operate a successful independent company it is important to build a personal relationship with each one of your customers. This enables us to recommend products we know will meet their needs and provide a service that national merchants cannot compete with, ensuring they don’t have a reason to shop elsewhere. How has being part of The IPG helped your business? Joining The IPG has definitely played a role in our success. It has given us a wider choice of suppliers with the added bonus of beneficial terms already being negotiated on our behalf. Additionally, the rebates you can earn help the business maintain an acceptable gross profit. What advice do you have for someone new to the industry or looking to expand?
would recommend plenty of homework beforehand. It’s important to take the following points into consideration: • • • • •
Associated costs e.g. premises, transportation and staff Realistic sales projection Start lean with initial stock orders Check competitors in the vicinity Know your customer base
Do you have any plans for the business in 2024? For 2024 we are hoping to significantly increase our bathroom sales as we feel that the heating market is declining. By growing sales from our showroom we will be able to achieve the same levels of profit without being reliant on the heating side of the business. We are also looking forward to continuing our relationship with The IPG and are excited to see which new suppliers will be joining this year.
