Embracing renewable energy: A members guide

As the renewable energy sector evolves, the opportunities for businesses to diversify and grow become increasingly significant.

As a member of The IPG, you are uniquely positioned to take advantage of these opportunities. By the end of this article, you’ll have all the tools to get started with renewable energy solutions, their benefits, costs, and the industry's future.

Starting your journey into renewables

Selling renewable energy solutions is easier if you partner with one of our suppliers, such as Renewable Equipment Solutions (R.E.S) or BeGreen.

R.E.S provides member training and userfriendly quoting software that simplifies the quick generation of accurate quotes. For new-build projects, simply share the property plans with R.E.S., and they will handle the rest, from training and design to supply and ongoing support. This seamless process ensures you are supported every step of your renewables journey.

BeGreen's extensive experience, robust support system, rapid turnaround in design and quotations, MCS umbrella scheme, and MCS administration services, combined with their comprehensive product range in renewable heating and MVHR, enable you to offer your installer network complete renewable energy solutions with all the necessary support, whether they are seasoned professionals or just starting out in renewables. This positions BeGreen as a leading partner for merchants aiming to excel in the renewable energy sector. Partnering with BeGreen will equip your business with the tools, expertise, and support needed to succeed in delivering high-quality renewable energy solutions.

Changing perceptions and highlighting opportunities

One of the significant challenges plumbing stores face is customers' reluctance to adopt heat pumps. Changing this perception involves highlighting the untapped potential

for profitability in the heat pump market. Diversifying into heat pumps offers a lucrative opportunity for your customers. The transition is seamless for competent installers who already possess the necessary skills. Emphasising the long-term savings, environmental benefits, and potential government incentives can also encourage customers to consider heat pumps.

The continued demand for heat pumps and renewables

Despite the government moving the boiler ban deadline by a few years, the demand for heat pumps and renewable solutions remains strong. The business for renewables is continually growing, with new installers frequently training on heat pumps due to the demand they are witnessing. Although the deadline has been pushed back, many selfbuilders and homeowners are still attracted by the government incentive (BUS), and developers are compelled towards heat pumps due to the SAP requirements. This sustained demand highlights the importance of being prepared and knowledgeable about these technologies.

Beyond heat pumps: a range of renewable technologies

Renewable energy encompasses more than just heat pumps. The IPG has suppliers offering a range of renewable technologies, providing members with various options to cater to for different customer needs.

These technologies include:

• Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

• Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)

• Air-to-Air Heat Pumps

• Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)

• Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels

• Battery Storage

• Low-Temperature Underfloor Heating

• EV Car Charge Points

• Heat Loss Calculations

• Low-Temperature System Designs

These technologies have distinct advantages and disadvantages, which we will explore in detail to help you understand their benefits and potential challenges.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

Advantages

• Energy Efficiency: ASHPs are highly energyefficient, transferring heat from the outside air to the inside of a building, even in cold temperatures.

• Reduced Dependency on fossil fuels: By utilising renewable energy from the air, ASHPs help reduce dependency on fossil fuels for heating, contributing to energy security and sustainability goals.

Disadvantages

• Higher Initial Cost: The initial cost outlay for ASHPs is higher compared to traditional heating systems.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)

Air-to-Air Heat Pumps

• Higher Efficiency and Lower Running Costs: GSHPs offer higher efficiency and lower running costs compared to other heating options.

• Consistent Performance: GSHPs provide more consistent performance as they are not affected by outside air temperature fluctuations.

• Dual Functionality: Air-to-Air Heat Pumps can provide both heating and cooling, making them versatile.

• Ease of Installation: They are relatively easy to install, especially in existing homes.

• Higher Installation Costs: The installation costs for GSHPs are higher due to the need for ground loop excavation.

• Space Requirements: GSHPs are spaceintensive, requiring sufficient land area for the ground loop or costly boreholes.

• Limited Functionality: These heat pumps only provide heating and cooling, with no hot water provision.

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels

Battery Storage

• Improved Indoor Air Quality: MVHR systems improve indoor air quality by reducing pollutants and allergens.

• MVHR can recover up to 90% of the heat from outgoing stale air and transfer the heat into incoming fresh air significantly reducing the energy needed for heating.

• Renewable Energy Source: Solar PV panels harness renewable energy from the sun, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

• Potential Revenue: There is potential to sell excess energy back to the grid, providing an additional revenue stream.

• Energy Storage: Battery storage systems allow for the storage of excess energy generated from renewable sources, such as Solar PV.

• Retrofit Challenges: MVHR systems are not easy to retrofit and are better suited to newly built properties.

EV Car Charge Points

• Convenience: EV Car Charge Points offer convenient charging at home, reducing the need for public charging stations.

• Weather Dependent: Energy generation fluctuates based on weather conditions, making it less reliable in some climates.

• Space Requirements: Adequate roof space and proper orientation are necessary for optimal performance.

• High Initial Costs: The installation and purchase of batteries entail high initial costs.

• Electricity Supply Requirements: They require access to a reliable electricity supply.

Underfloor Heating

• Comfort and Efficiency: Underfloor heating provides even and comfortable heat distribution throughout a room and can be more energyefficient than traditional radiators.

• Space Saving: It frees up wall space and eliminates the need for visible heating fixtures.

• Slower Response Time: Underfloor heating has a slower response time compared to radiators.

Technology, innovation, and cost considerations

The renewable energy sector is continuously evolving. Staying updated with industry news and advancements will ensure you remain at the forefront of technology and innovation.

Cost and affordability*

The cost of renewable technologies can vary significantly depending on the specific technology and setup:

• Heat Pumps: An average 8kW heat pump system, including MCS certification, a cylinder, and key components, costs around £6,500. Annual servicing is recommended at an approximate cost of £280.

• Solar PV: For an average-sized property, a 4kW Solar PV system with 10 panels typically costs around £2,400 for supply only or approximately £5,000 installed. The return on investment can be expected in around five years, though this varies based on the occupants' lifestyle and electricity usage.

• EV Charging Point: The supply cost for an EV charging point is approximately £650.

• Air-to-Air Heat Pump: For a system with two indoor units and one outdoor unit, the supply cost is around £1,200.

Maintenance and long-term savings

Renewable energy systems generally have lower operating costs compared to traditional systems. For instance, heat pumps and solar PV systems can significantly reduce energy bills over time, providing long-term savings.

PV

systems can significantly reduce energy bills over time, providing long-term savings

Environmental impact

Adopting renewable energy technologies significantly reduces dependence on fossil fuels, helping reduce your customer's carbon footprint. This shift towards greener energy solutions is crucial in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainability.

Policy and regulation

Government incentives and renewable energy standards play a vital role in encouraging the adoption of renewable technologies:

• Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS): This government incentive offers homeowners a £7,500 grant for installing an air or ground source heat pump. The grant is available for existing and newly built properties, provided the design and installation meet MCS standards.

• Building Regulations (SAP): To comply with current building regulations, a SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) must be passed. The criteria and regulations are becoming more stringent to achieve carbon-neutral targets. Renewable energy technologies like heat pumps and solar PV ensure compliance with SAP calculations and future-proof homes.

Future trajectory of renewable energy

The future of renewable energy looks promising, driven by climate change concerns and the government's push towards net-zero emissions. Renewable energy technologies, including heat pumps, are set to become more mainstream as policy changes and fossil fuel boilers are phased out. Investing in training and familiarising yourself with these technologies now will position your business advantageously in the coming years.

Conclusion

Transitioning to renewable energy solutions can seem daunting, but it can be highly rewarding with the proper support and resources. By partnering with a renewables supplier within The IPG and utilising the extensive offerings and expertise available, you can confidently guide your customers through the process, promoting a more sustainable and profitable future for all.

We were delighted to learn that nearly all attendees saw the value in independent plumbing stores and bathroom showrooms, citing service as the primary advantage.

We also welcomed IPG suppliers Wavin and Vokera to present and participate in the day’s discussions. Their representatives found the feedback invaluable for their product development and brand image. This event has provided us with a clearer vision of what the trade needs from you, our member stores, and from us as a supportive partner committed to helping you achieve your goals.

These interactions highlight the critical need for ongoing dialogue between suppliers and tradespeople, ensuring that products and services continually evolve to address their practical requirements.

Superb event and interesting discussions about how the industry can diversify and move forward

We’re excited to announce our new partnership with On The Tools, amplifying our core message of supporting independent members of The IPG their reach and influence will strengthen our efforts to position independent stores as formidable competitors against other industry players.

Behind the scenes

This issue introduces Dean Jones, member advisor, and passionate advocate for exceptional customer service and a seasoned expert in the plumbing and heating industry. Dean talks about his role at The IPG, the evolution of the industry, and how he helps our members navigate challenges.

Can you share what drew you to The IPG and the independent sector?

My career has always been centred around customer service. What drew me to The IPG was the high calibre of the staff within the independent stores. Having previously worked with some of them, I knew that the independents were not only strong but growing stronger. The shift of customers from bigger players to independents indicated to me a superior offering that aligns well with my values.

What do you consider the most exciting part of your role?

The most exciting aspect is advising. I don't just sell products; I provide solutions and advice that are unbiased and tailored to each member's needs. It’s about understanding their business and helping them implement strategies that work specifically for them. This involves sharing best practice and insights across our network, which can significantly accelerate their success.

What are some common challenges that our members face, and how do you help them overcome these?

Recently, the biggest challenge has been the slowdown in the economy, which has affected footfall for businesses. My role involves helping members become more proactive, particularly in using digital tools. Whether it's enhancing their online presence or engaging with customers through social media, we discuss strategies to maintain and grow their customer base even in challenging times.

With the rise of e-commerce, how are you advising our members who are hesitant about adopting these technologies?

I often talk to members about the importance of being proactive, especially now. For those hesitant about e-commerce and social media, I emphasise that there’s no time like the present

to start. The shift towards online isn't just a trend but a fundamental shift in how customers interact with businesses. Engaging online keeps your business relevant and in the public eye, ensuring you remain a top choice for existing and potential customers alike.

Can you talk about the growing importance of renewable energy sources like heat pumps in our industry?

Absolutely, the technology in the heating sector is rapidly evolving towards renewables, with heat pumps and solar energy leading the charge. It’s crucial for our members to be aware of and adapt to these technologies. Although not every business needs to specialise in these areas, being knowledgeable and prepared to offer these solutions is important. We have suppliers who can support our members in this transition,

which not only helps them stay competitive but also meets the increasing consumer demand for sustainable options.

Looking ahead, what excites you about the future of the industry and The IPG?

I'm really excited about the potential within the independent sector. Our members provide a level of service and expertise that is highly valued by local customers, which is something not consistently found in national chains. As we continue to support our members in embracing new technologies and expanding their services, I see a bright future where our members not only survive but thrive.

Why IPG members are looking at kitchens as a margin enhancing addition to their showrooms

Members often ask The IPG for business support, and a frequent question asked is what are the key benefits of moving into the kitchen market?

There is a perception amongst independent merchants that to offer both bathroom and kitchen products is a difficult proposition.

So, we asked two of our suppliers who operate in both markets, JJO and LochAnna, to explain why, and how it could be an easy transition for The IPG members to move into the kitchen market. This article will demonstrate that the two markets are not as different as you may first think and may enable you to increase revenue quickly and easily with some exceptional support from the group’s suppliers.

Why should The IPG members consider selling kitchens?

Both suppliers gave the same clear persuasive answers to this question. Moving into the kitchen market will increase your revenue and in turn profit.

Why? Is the obvious question to this statement, and the answer is simple but emphatic; the order value on kitchens is higher than the average bathroom order and margins are strong.

The two categories work hand in hand and complement each other and serve to keep showrooms busy throughout the year. It is recognised in the industry that when bathroom sales take a dip, the kitchen market tends to gather pace and fill the gap.

Additionally, introducing kitchens to your business, will help to draw in new customers and strengthen existing trading relationship which you already have with kitchen fitters and building companies who already shop with one of the other trade retailers because you don’t have a competitive kitchen offer.

Getting started is simple according to our suppliers.

Firstly, offering to price one of your existing customer’s next kitchen installations, is a great way to get the ball rolling, with no initial investment in in-store displays and additional expert staff. This one simple move will enable members to find out how easy it is to move into the kitchen market.

Trade kitchen customers buy regularly so once you have them on board, you can build sales and expand your displays and kitchen team. A growing number of installers have trading relationships with developers and house builders which can generate volume but will probably suppress some of your margin.

All this may still seem daunting, but with the support of The IPG suppliers JJO and LochAnna it will be much easier than you may first think.

LochAnna Kitchens

Who are

LochAnna were formed in 2014, but the management team have been in the market for much longer and consider themselves kitchen experts.

They care passionately about what they do and work hard to deliver kitchens with industry leading “on time, in full” (OTIF) levels. Their range and brochures are modern and aspirational – and include the broadest range of products. They focus on the affordable and middle sectors of the market, ensuring their customers can make money and compete. LochAnna have three brands covering the

good, better, and best price points and can help you supply kitchens from £1,500 to upwards of £30,000. The ranges are:

• Evo: a tight simple range of quality kitchens, built and ready for despatch on short lead times

• LochAnna: the middle of the range, with 25 different doors to choose from, including 10 that can be painted in a colour of the customer’s choice

• Handmade: as the name would suggest, a beautiful range of kitchens with handmade in-framed doors

How else can LochAnna support kitchen business growth?

What makes a great kitchen showroom once you have established your local market:

• Choice: offering the most desirable mix of quality products, and brands that aren’t available in every other showroom locally

• Support and service: working with a small number of suppliers means dealers soon learn to work together and deliver a great customer experience – the more suppliers a dealer works with, the more there is to learn and greater the risk

• Design: Great designers, ideally proficient on one of the main CAD systems

• Installers: It’s the same as bathrooms and just about all other high ticket home improvements, good installers make a massive difference!

• Recommend: appliance and worktop companies if you choose to offer these alongside your kitchens

• Displays: LochAnna will support you in putting together a good initial display. A well-designed display motivates customers to buy. Start simply with the Evo range which requires a wall just 2m long where you can display enough cabinets and samples to get going. As your knowledge grows and time progresses you can add to the displays

• Technical back up: LochAnna will help with technical support for installers (including a full tech manual), and training so you can prepare your customer for

Green Electrical & Plumbing Supplies

We interviewed Lee Green, Director for his view on their move into the kitchen market.

What support did you receive from the supplier?

The support we have received from LochAnna has been brilliant with our local ASM John Boston, even going as far as to help with the designing of some of the kitchens we have supplied. He is always on hand to make sure the plans match with our customers ideas and needs.

Additionally, John has spent hours with our staff helping to train them with Winner design package, which he has great knowledge of, so this has been without doubt a great help and benefit to our business.

The quality of the LochAnna product and ranges are of very high standard and the options to their ranges are vast, with many colour choices and door finishes/designs.

How easy has the transition been?

I wouldn’t say it has been an easy transition into the kitchen market, but my design and sales team have really worked hard to learn the design side of things. We have recently added to our sales team with a dedicated kitchen designer, Lucy Howells, and we are currently expanding our bathroom and kitchen showroom to offer even more depth to our ranges.

What are the key benefits to your business?

Offering kitchens is certainly a great help to our customers who can now come to us as a one stop shop. Coupled with having both bathroom and kitchen showrooms, we also have a wonderful and expansive range of lighting, electrical accessories and an array of highquality heating options with many designer radiators to choose from to compliment any bathroom or kitchen.

Industry news

Trending topics and stories within the plumbing, heating and bathroom sector.

How the cost-of-living is impacting the industry

The increased cost of heating your home was at the forefront of people’s minds during the height of the Winter season, with many choosing to save money by not turning their heating on wherever possible. However, research conducted by Wavin during their ‘State of the Nation’ survey shows that this has had a significant impact on the plumbing industry.

Over 65% of plumbers reported an increase in callouts for faulty heating systems as a direct result of them not being used as frequently.

This has led to increased workloads with 60% saying they have had to turn work away and 65% stating that jobs are overrunning on a regular basis.

This is also having a negative effect on the next generation of plumbers with only 45% reporting that they currently have an apprentice due to lack of time available to provide training – a worrying statistic when the industry is already struggling with a skills shortage.

Clean heat market mechanism policy delayed

The government Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM) policy has now been delayed until April 2025. This means the fines for boiler manufacturers who do not meet heat pump targets won’t be implemented until this time. However, some manufacturers have already applied a price increase of up to £120, known as the ‘boiler tax’, to cover the cost of penalties. The Competition and Markets Authority have been asked to review the industry and ensure unnecessary profits aren’t being made from this early increase.

The delay also provides the UK with another year to meet it's reduced carbon emission targets and provide an easier way for people to access heat pump grants.

One change already announced by the government is the insulation criteria needed to qualify for the £7,500 grant. Homeowners will no longer have to ensure they have cavity wall and loft insulation as a mandatory requirement. This change could save an average of £2,500 on the cost of upgrading to a heat pump according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It also allow households to spread the cost of insulating their home over a period that suits them.

This year’s bathroom lighting trends

By using the right lighting solutions for your bathroom you can enhance the space into a haven of relaxation and style. Whether the room is big or small, this year’s trends can help you create the bathroom of your dreams.

Emphasizing relaxation and wellness in bathroom design has become increasingly popular this year. Integrating dimmable lighting can transform your bathroom into a serene, spa-like retreat. To enhance this calming ambiance, consider installing smart LED lighting strips along the edges of your

vanity unit. These lights can be controlled by your smartphone, offering a fully customisable experience.

When space is limited, adding extra lighting options can be a challenge. Incorporating an illuminated mirrored cabinet in your bathroom is a smart solution that not only offers additional storage but also provides an eye-catching feature. These cabinets frequently come with tunable or dimmable lighting options, allowing you to adjust the light intensity and colour temperature according to your needs. This combination of functionality and customisation makes an illuminated mirrored cabinet an ideal choice for enhancing both the utility and atmosphere of compact bathroom spaces.

Retirement of the Water Regulations Guide

Water Regs UK has recently made a significant update, retiring their longstanding Water Regulations Guide in favour of a new, more accessible online guidance system. This transition marks the most substantial change in over two decades. The new online platform is designed to provide users with up-todate information to aid compliance with water fittings regulations and byelaws.

Some of the key features of the new online guidance include:

• Free access widening the reach and promoting greater awareness

• All regulatory requirements are now clearly differentiated from additional informed guidance – making it easier for users to understand what is mandatory and what is advisory

• The ability to provide feedback directly through the platform to encourage ongoing improvements

Independents are the preferred choice

Choosing a tradesperson can be a daunting task for homeowners, with numerous companies to pick from. However, research conducted by Clothes2Order has found that people favour hiring independents over larger businesses.

The survey found that 93% of participants stated they would rather use local sole traders or a small business for their plumbing, electrical or decorating needs. Feedback provided found that they are perceived as more trustworthy and the service is more personalised to the individual requirements of each customer.

Attention to detail, a high skill level and reliability were the priority of 4 out of 5 respondents with customer service including consistent and regular updates following closely behind. Competitive pricing rating lower in the survey with people choosing to hire someone genuine with extensive knowledge rather than an impersonal larger company purely for cheaper prices.

This year marks a milestone anniversary for Unique Plumbing Supplies whose five branches have proudly been providing quality products, expert advice and unmatched service across Hampshire for 20 years.

Since its inception in 2004, the business has become a cornerstone in the plumbing and bathroom industry. From its inaugural Eastleigh branch manned by just three members of staff, Unique Plumbing Supplies has undergone remarkable expansion, establishing branches in Hedge End, Romsey, Chandlers Ford and Segensworth. Now with an impressive team of 32 employees, each branch has cemented its status as a trusted supplier in their area.

Through its evolution, the business has remained committed to enhancing its facilities and services to better serve its clientele. Investments in showroom expansions and mezzanine floor installations have bolstered the company’s capacity to meet the evolving needs of the industry. By joining The IPG in

2017, the company has been able to ensure that their customers can purchase the best brands at great prices, further enhancing their value proposition and reinforcing their dedication to providing unparalleled service and quality.

To commemorate its 20th anniversary, Unique Plumbing Supplies celebrated with a weeklong event filled with exciting giveaways and festivities. Daily branch raffles provided customers with the chance to win some fantastic items, culminating in a grand draw at the Eastleigh branch, where ten lucky winners walked away with amazing prizes including a Meta Quest VR headset and tickets to the Only Fools and Horses theatre show.

The IPG were excited to support the team on the final day of the event, where customers were treated to a feast of hotdogs, personalised cupcakes and other refreshments as a token of appreciation for their continued custom over the years. The celebrations didn’t end there, as Steve Chambers, Branch Manager of Eastleigh, was honored for his 20 years of exemplary service. Steve was presented with a framed Southampton FC Football Shirt, adorned with signatures from legendary players, such as Alan Shearer, Rickie Lambert and Matt Le Tissier.

Congratulations to everyone at Unique Plumbing Supplies for this incredible achievement, and here’s to many more years to come!
