A message from the Ambassador My wife Greta and I would like to extend our warmest wishes to the readers of The Irish Post for a very happy St Patrick’s Day. The St Patrick’s Day period offers a wonderful opportunity for the large and diverse Irish community to express our deep pride in our heritage and to reinforce our already strong bonds with Ireland and with the extended Irish family worldwide. It is also a time when we showcase the best of our rich and diverse Irish culture to the world. I always feel especially privileged to represent Ireland in Britain at this time of the year. Our community here is a genuine asset to Ireland and we are proud of its achievements. The scale and diversity of celebrations taking place all over the country are truly remarkable and I wish to pay tribute to all those who work so tirelessly to organise the many St Patrick’s festivals, parades, concerts and community events taking place throughout the country. St Patrick’s Day also offers a unique opportunity to communicate a strong, positive message about Ireland, Irish people, our culture and our heritage to a worldwide audience. Your support of Ireland in this way is deeply valued. 2016 is a very special year for Ireland as we commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising and the historical events of 1916. I am pleased to say that the Embassy, in cooperation with a range of partners, is organising an

Page 2-5.indd 3

extensive programme of community, creative and commemorative events to mark the centenary. I would particularly like to thank the many community groups that have launched their own events. The contribution being made by the Irish community in Britain, in particular, to ensuring that this important anniversary is appropriately marked is widely recognised and deeply appreciated. I wish you every success and would like to encourage the Irish community and friends of Ireland to engage in the series of events taking place over the course of 2016. I hope you all thoroughly enjoy the St Patrick’s Day festivities. Greta and I, along with all our colleagues at the Embassy, look forward to joining you in the celebrations. PARTY ON! MAL ROGERS meets the community of people behind Britain’s St Patrick’s Day festivals and parades

“I

was born in Co. Mayo and came to Jersey in 1977. I’m chairman of the Jersey Irish Society, and alongside our honorary president, I’ve been organising St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Jersey for about six or seven years,” Martina Wintour explains. The Jersey Irish community is a long established one, and the Irish Society itself celebrates its 40th birthday this year. The celebrations for St Patrick’s Day combine traditional aspects with some innovations,” says Martina. “Each year our celebrations begin with

Page 6-11.indd 7

Mass celebrated by an Irish priest. This year we have with us Father Finbar Kealy Abbott Emeritus from the Benedictine Douai Abbey In Berkshire. Shamrock, imported from Ireland by the Jersey Irish Society, will be blessed and distributed, and the President’s letter to the Diaspora will be read.” The spiritual element is important on St Patrick’s Day, but of course like all other Irish communities, music and craic are a major part of the celebrations. “After Mass we’ll be meeting up in the Town Hall in St Helier (the island’s capital) with local musicians providing the

traditional entertainment. Following the reception, we join the Cannon O’Rafferty School of Irish Dance at their annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations, and finish at our local Irish bar Kitty O’Shea’s.” As with almost every other Irish person who tries to organise a St Patrick’s Day celebration, Martina finds that raising the necessary funds to finance events is the biggest headache. “Our geographical position adds considerably to our budget,” she explains. “When Irish artist are invited to the island it obviously involves flight and or/ boat travel costs, so that’s an added expense.”

COLOURFUL: From left: Leeds’ annual St Patrick’s Day parade; Jersey Irish Society’s Martina Wintour; Leeds community stalwart Hugh O’Malley; children enjoying last year’s St Patrick’s Day festivities

But it is a tremendously satisfying job for Martina. “The best part of organising St Patrick’s Day celebrations is the positive feedback and participation from the Jersey Irish community. It brings to the fore a sense of connection with Ireland and a pride in one’s Irishness. “There have been many highlights over the years, and I’m hoping that the 2016 celebrations will provide a highlight or two! I’m particularly excited to listen to professional musicians, good professional players, and three times All-Ireland fiddle champion Dermot Crehan is playing at our Ball. So I’m really looking forward to that.” According to Martina, the festival helps to foster good community relations on the island, which has a population of only 100,000 in total. “I think St Patrick’s Day celebrations help to unite the Irish community in Britain, and it’s certainly true in Jersey. A sense of national pride appears to bubble to the surface, and a greater connection and love of homeland is really evident. “The Jersey Irish Society imports shamrock from Ireland each year, and it is very emotional to witness the wish for both Irish-born, as well as first and second generation Irish, to wear it on the day, or take it home for their granny!”

H

ugh O’Malley has been involved in the St Patrick’s Day parades in Leeds since 2007. At the time he was secretary of Leeds Comhaltas, a position he continues to hold. Irish music and Irish culture are a big part of life for him. “I’m from a tiny corner of Ireland that took root in a house in Leeds,”

Page 6-11.indd 8

he explains. “My parents were both from Mayo and lived in a part of the city in which a large number of Irish had settled. “So, as I was born at home and we had many visitors, my infant ears first heard Irish accents and music and the first experience of my nose was the smell of Irish food. My love of Ireland and things Irish were established.” Through Comhaltas Hugh became an integral part of the Leeds Irish community, so he was an obvious choice to help on the St Patrick’s Day Parade. He explains how it came about. “In March 2000 a group of people set up a committee that was independent of any other Irish organisation in Leeds and organised the first Leeds St Patrick’s Day Parade. They had many problems to overcome but they succeeded and set down the strong foundations for the parades that followed. I took part in the second year of the parade as one of the general public and have not missed one since.” But as is sometimes the way in community affairs, the number of people who are prepared to help in

projects can fluctuate wildly. This was the case in Leeds. “By 2007 the committee had dwindled to a small number of people but they heroically maintained the parade and it still attracted many in the Irish community to take part on the day,” Hugh says. “Jackie Dwyer, a prominent member of the Irish community, was asked to help. He decided that more committee members were needed and turned to Leeds Irish organisations to help. The committee was greatly enlarged with volunteers from amongst others the Leeds Irish Centre, Comhaltas, Leeds Irish Health and Homes, Touchstone, Leeds Irish Welfare, the GAA, Faith and Light, Leeds Irish Golf, Leeds University Irish Society. “I joined the parade committee as one of their

representatives taking the post of vice-secretary in 2007. At the AGM in 2008 I was elected secretary and have remained in that post ever since.” As secretary, Hugh O’Malley is crucial to the running of the St Patrick’s events. “My specific job is to do the secretarial tasks: attend to correspondence, set the agenda for meetings and take the minutes at these meetings. “However, it is amazing the number of people that have to be seen and the amount of work that has to be done just to put on a one day event so all the committee have to roll up their sleeves and multi-task.” Just like the profile of the Irish in Britain community in general, the Leeds St Patrick’s Day parade has grown enormously since the year 2000. “When Jackie chaired that first meeting in 2008 he set forward his vision to present to the citizens of Leeds a spectacle that would open their eyes to what the Irish community in Leeds could do and to introduce them to the Irish culture. “To do this for the 2008 parade we set out to engage the city of Leeds with our slogan ‘Leeds goin’ Irish’; introduced nine floats showing various Irish depictions on low loaders provided free by local contractors into a parade of Irish organisations led by a pipe band. The parade is now an important calendar event in Leeds.” Of course, any undertaking that involves the public is going to have its setbacks. Hugh is no stranger to these. “There are unforeseen glitches every year, no matter how much planning you do. And of course funding the parade is always a headache. We are

very fortunate in getting grants from the Irish Government and Leeds City Council and we have some very generous supporters but we still have a big gap to bridge ourselves. “We do fund raising activities but unlike the GAA clubs or Comhaltas we have no support base, so we’re totally reliant on the general Irish community to come to our events. “But when it’s all there’s a feeling of great pride in the Irish and what they’ve done. And of course there’s great relief from the committee!”

L

uton’s vibrant Irish community has always marked our national day very enthusiastically, with the celebrations amongst the biggest in Britain. Noreen Kellett , the Luton Irish Forum Treasurer, has been at the centre of events since the year 2000. From Limerick, Noreen came to Britain around 1960 to attend school here. “This will be the 17th St Patrick’s Day parade I’ve helped to organise,” she says. “I came to a meeting at Luton Irish Forum very early on, and from then on I was eager to help celebrate St Patrick’s Day as a community event in Luton. This year I’ll be helping to organise sponsorship, as well as arranging the Irish market for St Patrick’s Day.” The members of the public who watch the parades, concerts and events that make up St Patrick’s festivals throughout the country are probably only vaguely aware of the amount of meticulous work that goes into the occasion. “Yes, there’s a huge degree of organisation required,” Noreen says. “The last couple of weeks have been especially difficult, as the day draws closer and there are a lot of things to organise within the span of a few weeks. It’s a hectic time of year. “But we begin early — we start preparing for St Patrick’s Day well before Christmas. And in the end, when I see it all come together, that’s the best part.” Of course, as is the nature of these things, glitches do occur: “For the past three years we’ve been unable to take floats through the town due to the location of bollards. They’ve introduced into Luton as a security precaution. As a result of this all of the floats have to be removed from the parade, which has naturally had an impact on the quality of parade entries,” says Noreen. There is, too, huge satisfaction for organisers. “My favourite part of the St

Page 6-11.indd 10

ON PARADE: Britain goes green for St Patrick’s Day, inset: Noreen Kellett

Patrick’s Day Festival is the music,” adds Noreen. “We’ve had some big bands performing during the festival including the High Kings and the Fureys, both of whom were very entertaining. The traditional music and dance are also a highlight for me; the colourful costumes and the music really help to bring the parade to life.” During Noreen’s association with the Luton St Patrick’s festival, proceedings have changed somewhat. “At the beginning it was a very small parade,” she says. “We had one band and a small audience, whereas in recent years, we’ve featured three pipe bands and a brass band. “And we’ve also had a pageant which has contributed to a more colourful and diverse event on the day. Now lots of people of all cultures attend our St Patrick’s Day celebrations, with local people dressing up and walking in the parade every year.” Noreen believes the St Patrick’s Day celebrations helps to unite the Irish in Britain. “Locally here in Luton everyone knows about the parade and the celebration, and the whole community looks forward to seeing it every year. New Irish immigrants come to us here at the Luton Irish Forum to find out about Irish activities and ways to reconnect with their Irish heritage and culture through St Patrick’s Day festivities. We also get many dignitaries that attend on the day, all of which are presented with shamrock.”

K

ay Forrest first came to Britain from Cork City on St Valentine’s Day, 1958. “I arrived in Birmingham when I was 16 years old,” she says, “and when they still had gas lamp on the streets!” Kay is now retired after working in the health sector for 30 years. She has always been keenly involved in the Irish community. “I was involved in a variety of high profile fundraising events for the Irish community in Coventry, and then I was approached by the St. Patrick’s Parade committee to support the project - which I was more than pleased to do,”she says. “So I’ve been involved with the St Patrick’s Day Parade since 1995 - 21 years.” But keeping the show on the road, so to speak, has not always been easy. “It’s difficult to maintain the funding for the project and it took long hours to get the support of the city council, local businesses and the Irish community to keep the event going. But for many years we’ve been grateful for the support of the Irish Government to help keep the festival alive. It’s been crucial,” Kay explains. The festival and parade have given Kay much joy over the years. “The best part is seeing everybody turn out for the event and enjoying themselves, celebrating their Irish culture and making it a great day for the Irish in Coventry,” she says. There have been many highlights over the years, of course. Kay selects three moments that have particularly moved her. “Seeing the shamrock from my home city Cork being blessed and distributed to the Irish community in Coventry was a wonderful moment. A multi-faith Mass at Coventry Cathedral

bringing together many communities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day was also very moving. And The Journey exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery had many photographs and testimonies of the Irish community coming to and living in Coventry.” The focus of St Patrick’s Day in many places has changed over the years, and Coventry has been no exception. “We try to incorporate as many events as possible for the second and third generation Irish community, for example adding comedy and film nights and involving local businesses,” Kay says, adding that the greater public beyond the Irish community are much more ready to celebrate St Patrick’s Day that might have been unimaginable a couple of decades ago. “Yes, March 17 has changed in a very big way. It’s the day when the Irish are truly on the map in Britain. The events are positive and it helps the British perception of the Irish. It’s a celebratory event bringing the communities together. You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!”

BEEF AND GUINNESS PIE

c Serves 6 Ingredients 3tbsp. vegetable oil 2 medium white onions, peeled and finely chopped 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 1cm thick slices 3 celery sticks, peeled and cut into 2cm thick slices 300g chestnut or button mushrooms, sliced 3 gloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped 4 sprigs thyme 1 sprig rosemary 1 bay leaf 150g streaky bacon, sliced 800g braising streak, cut into bite sized cubes (you can ask your butcher to do this) 40g plain flour 440ml Guinness 50ml port 200ml beef stock (you could use water instead if don’t have any beef stock) Sea salt, cracked black pepper to season 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry 1 egg, beaten Preheat oven to 180C. Heat 1tbsp. vegetable oil in a large saucepan on a low heat. Add the onions and gently sweat for 10minutes. Try not to get too much colour on them, you are cooking them slowly to release their sweetness. Increase the heat slightly and add the carrots, celery, mushrooms and garlic. Add the thyme, rosemary and bay leaf. Season well with salt and pepper and cook for a further five minutes. Remove the vegetables from the pan. Quickly fry the sliced bacon in the same pan, remove and mix with the vegetables in an ovenproof dish. Heat 2 tbsp. vegetable oil in the same pan again and fry the beef in batches until all pieces are golden brown. Place all the browned beef into the pan and stir in the flour. Add the Guinness and port and bring to a simmer. Transfer the beef and liquid and mix with the vegetables and bacon in the ovenproof dish. Cook in the oven for 90minutes until the meat is very tender. Preheat oven to 200C. Roll out the pastry lid. Cover the dish with the pastry and scallop the edge using the back of a spoon. Brush with beaten egg to glaze. Bake the pie for 35minutes or until the pastry is cooked through and golden brown. Serve with fluffy mashed potato on the side or roast celeriac.

t Patrick’s Day when I was growing up in Dublin started early in the morning. With a large Irish breakfast (no grilled tomato please, that’s just wrong), and my brother and I running around trying to get my dad to hurry up and start the car. We’d all tumble in and the usual arguments would ensue as my dad would insist on parking approximately 10miles away from the actual parade on O’Connell Street – much to my mother’s annoyance. Us kids were oblivious to this. The only important thing was getting to the parade on time.

Except most years we arrived a little late. This was fine for me – I’d sit on my dad’s shoulders with a bird’s eye view of the action, while my brother clambered up on a box we’d brought along for the purpose. Nine times out of 10 it would inevitably start raining. We’d keep watching in the pouring rain, teeth chattering from the cold. Eventually my mum would insist on us returning home. Years later when I’d watch the parade on the TV, far too cool now as a teenager to actually go and see it, I’d remember those days. And the food that followed. Pure comfort food, prepared by my

PISTACHIO BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

PISTACHIO BREAD Ingredients 300g plain flour 2 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 120g butter, softened and extra for greasing 200g caster sugar 2 free range eggs 85ml buttermilk (you can use milk with a dash of lemon juice if you don’t have buttermilk) 1 tsp. natural green food colouring (optional) 80g pistachios, shelled Preheat oven to 180C. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. In another bowl cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and buttermilk to the butter and sugar, mix well. Roast the pistachios in the oven on a baking tray for 5minutes. Chop roughly. Fold the flour mixture together with the butter and sugar and stir in the chopped pistachios. Add the food colouring at this stage if using. If you want a darker colour add more, be careful and add drop by drop. You don’t want to end up with a fluorescent green loaf. Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm loaf tin with butter. Spoon the mixture into the tin and finish with a sprinkle of pistachios. Bake for 50minutes or until a cake tester/skewer comes out clean. You can gobble it up while it’s warm. You could add some butter or try with some coconut yogurt. Or why not turn it into the bread and butter pudding below? BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

Ingredients 1 loaf pistachio bread 40g butter, and extra for greasing 400ml whole milk 100ml double cream 3 free range eggs 25g caster sugar 80g pistachios, roughly chopped 1 tbsp. demerara sugar Preheat oven to 170C. Grease an ovenproof dish with butter. Slice the pistachio bread into even slices. Whether you keep the crusts on is a personal preference. Butter each slice lightly on both sides. Heat the milk and cream in a saucepan until scalding point (the point just before it boils). Meanwhile whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Pour the milk and cream onto the eggs and sugar. Return to the saucepan and cook out on a gentle heat for 3 – 4minutes until it has thickened slightly. Start with a layer of bread in the dish, followed by a sprinkle of pistachios. Continue alternating between layers of bread and pistachios until the dish is nearly full. Pour the custard on top. Finish with a final layer of bread and sprinkle the demerara sugar on top. Bake in the oven for 35-40minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with cream or custard.

BEYOND WORDS

St Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Ireland’s cultural wonders and so to mark the occasion we asked Irish Post readers to share the poetry and literature that make the hairs on their neck stand on end. KATY HARRINGTON reveals the most spine-tingling lines written by an Irish hand

“…where I am, I don’t know, I’ll never know, in the silence you don’t know, you must go on, I can’t go on, I’ll go on” “And O she was the Sunday In every week” The closing lines of Austin Clarke’s The Planter’s Daughter were chosen by Cork-born Maeve Kearney, who now lives in Surrey

Actress Jessica Regan chose this sparse but hopeful phrase from Samuel Beckett’s The Unnameable

“It’s all over… And it’s all about to begin” Emma McCarthy suggested the warring interior and exterior words of Brian Friel’s conflicted character Gar, in the much-loved Philadelphia, Here I Come!

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” “I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams” Marcus Culloty, picked the immortal words of W.B. Yeats from He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven

“So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be Old bridges breaking between you and me Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall Confident that we have built our wall” Leah Flynn picks Nobel Prize winner Séamus Heaney’s life-affirming verse from Scaffolding

Page 42-44.indd 42

Aidan Manning’s favourite was written by Oscar Wilde. In Act III of Lady Windermere’s fan, the character Lord Darlington utters these unforgettable words

“Every old man I see In October-coloured weather Seems to say to me “I was once your father” Maggie Collins picked these heart-breaking lines written by Monaghan’s Patrick Kavanagh in Memory of my Father

“Who has left a scent on my life, and left my walls Dancing over and over with her shadow Whose hair is twined in all my waterfalls And all of London littered with remembered kisses” Jennifer Horgan chooses the words of Irish poet and playwright Louis McNeice, taken from his poem Autumn Journal
