Surely, there is no better time in history to support the most innovative Irish-owned companies working across Britain. Between the state banquet at Windsor Castle, the Taoiseach’s breakfast reception at Mansion House and the Lord Mayor and

the City of London Corporation’s banquet at the Guildhall, Enterprise Ireland hosted a full programme of events for industry, including a showcase of 40 Irish companies with high growth potential and a business reception for companies involved in the construction sector. The showcase event, called ‘2014 Ones to Watch’, took place at The Embassy of Ireland, London with Eamon Gilmore TD as guest of honour and supporting the occasion as Tánaiste, along with Enterprise Ireland CEO Julie Sinnamon. The Enterprise Ireland team in Britain regularly host master class events on developing and implementing a UK market strategy, and the recent state visit represented a brilliant opportunity to share this experience with some of Ireland’s most exciting high potential companies, as well as helping to enhance their profile in Britain. The 40 companies that

PR SLIDES PR Slides has taken PR completely online and turned the Irish PR industry on its head by changing how brands interact with the media. The online tool allows global consumer brands to release product images and photos from PR campaigns directly to journalists. Over 800 images from PR Slides are currently being used in press each month. In Britain, the company works with independent brands as well as high street favourites such as Joy, Fraser Hart and House of Fraser. The site also features designers from the Young British Designers collective as well as a growing number of bespoke jewelers such as Alex Monroe and Mona Mara. SALASO Established by chartered physiotherapist Aoife Ní Mhuirí in 2011, Salaso (previously HealthClinicPlus) has developed an exercise software package that helps patients get better faster, by turning physiotherapy advice and exercises into everyday routines. The software uses high quality teaching videos to show patients how to do their home exercises and the software and outcomes measurement tool keeps patients connected with the physiotherapist or doctor without needing to come into the clinic or hospital setting for face-to-face appointments. With reference clients such as the British Olympic Medical Institute and Bupa London Health Clinics, the company is now working with an Acute Hospital Trust in South London on a clinical research trial to facilitate more effective delivery of Musculoskeletal Services to the large patient population of that area.

One of the speakers, CEO and founder of Salaso Aoife Ní Mhuirí describes her experience of working as a client of Enterprise Ireland. “The Enterprise Ireland UK office has worked with us from the very start of our UK journey and the support provided has been invaluable,” she says. “We benefited from Enterprise Ireland’s established networks and the organised events around specific industry sectors such as Healthcare and Sports

Ireland’s growing number of female-led entrepreneurs were well also represented on the day, by companies such as Eveo, PR Slides, Tapastreet and Wizzki. A total of 41 female-led High Potential Start-Up projects won Enterprise Ireland investment in 2013, a 100 per cent increase from the previous year. ONES TO WATCH… THE IRISH SUCCESS STORIES OF TOMORROW ➧Continued from page 17 strengthening their British growth strategy, and to increase their profile in the market. 2013 was a record year for startups in Ireland with over 100 supported by Enterprise Ireland through strategic business advice and investment funding. And, according to Sheila O’Loughlin, Enterprise Ireland’s Senior Advisor for New Market Entrants, nowhere is more important for these companies than their closest neighbour. “The number of Irish start-up companies targeting the UK has nearly doubled over the last four years, with the volume of their exports climbing by 55 per cent,” she said. “The Ones to Watch event gives these innovators a unique forum to strengthen and deepen business relationships with UK industry and to identify new joint business opportunities.”

SMART WALL PAINT Smart Wall Paint, the award-winning write on wipe off whiteboard paint, is transforming businesses, schools and homes worldwide, providing users with a limitless canvas for creativity and collaboration. Currently trading in 25 markets and through 17 ecommerce sites, Smart Wall Paint is becoming prominent in the British market and we only see this remaining on an upward trend. Business customers include Google, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, BT, Vodafone and Virgin, as well as many small businesses. The Real Buzz Group, A London-based digital solutions provider in the lifestyle sector, has recently introduced Smart Wall Paint into eight of their offices. “It has really transformed the way in which we work. People in our office love it that much that they want to use it at home,” said a spokesperson for the group. Education customers include universities, colleges and schools such as Bristol University and London School of Music. Senior Leader in Education in Durham, Jon Tait, said: “Students have really taken to it and are engaged in their learning and it has created many more different learning opportunities in those classrooms. If you’re looking for that creative spark in your classroom, then I’d certainly recommend that you think about what potential learning opportunities this may lead to.”

OXYMEM With an ever increasing focus on energy reduction and particularly for the heavy industrial users, UCD spinout company OxyMem has developed a revolutionary new system which can dramatically improve the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment plants. Following successful trials of a pilot scale unit at Severn Trent Water’s Minworth facility, the system has been shown to deliver Energy cost reductions of 75 per cent for aeration process and estimate the global potential for energy savings for wastewater aeration is in the order of €35billion. Wastewater treatment process alone consumes two-three per cent of the generated electricity in developed nations. London reception celebrates state visit FILL THESE BOOTS Earlier this year the Enterprise Ireland construction network ‘Fill these boots’ were proud to co-host a reception with the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to celebrate the occasion of the state visit. John Hunt, Senior Market Advisor for the construction sector noted that “for generations, the London construction market, like no other overseas location or sector, has demonstrated how well the British and Irish can combine both professionally and socially.” The evening reception at Whitehall place was the latest in a series of events that have been celebrating Irish Interest across the London construction sector since 2007. The celebration of the first state visit was our first collaboration with the LCCI and also, the premiere of the first video interview with Mr

Ray O’Rourke KBE, the founder and Chairman of Laing O’Rourke Construction Limited. Titled Great Irish in Great Britain, the achievements of Laing O’Rourke, Britain’s largest privately owned construction company provided a resounding example of where Britain and Ireland combine to great effect. Networking and encouraging partnership have been key priorities for the London office of Enterprise Ireland. “No matter how strong a company’s proposition, at the early stages of its overseas growth, resources, cash, time are always scarce... and this is when advice, direction and mentoring deliver the most value,” Mr Hunt added. “In part, the success of early stage Irish companies in the UK can often be attributed to the help and support of the Irish business community, sometimes ‘

over a pint’ but increasingly through Enterprise Ireland sponsored programmes such as business links, market expert or accelerator programmes which can offer well-structured and remunerated consultancy.” The London office of Enterprise Ireland has welcomed new employees in recent months to offer advice and support for companies in sectors such as Engineering, Water, Digital Content and Technology and yet we continually rely on external expertise that can help us to support the needs of the hundreds of companies we work with each year. Mr Hunt said: “We are always looking to recruit the right blend of experience, skills and sector knowledge to our UK panel of market experts and please contact me or my colleagues if you’d like to help.”

Talking point Interview with Patrick Buckley — Deputy Managing Director, EPS Group EPS Group were first introduced to the services of an Enterprise Ireland sponsored Market Expert in 2011. At the time, EPS were already an established and successful family business with over 280 employees and a significant share of Ireland’s water and waste water Design Build Operate (DBO) market. The management team recognised that to continue growth and to support investment in manufacturing efficiency they would need to develop further scale through export markets. Did you have a clear idea of where you required external support? Yes. We were active in the UK utility and industrial sectors from mid-2010 and initially were looking to add a deeper knowledge and understanding to our decision making. We had already achieved a

number of successes across five key water companies and various contractors. Answers to questions such as ‘where should we go next in terms of stepping up a number of gears?’ And ‘what would be the most effective alternative or refocused message for the market?’ How difficult was it to integrate an ‘outsider’ into the management team? The challenge of a different perspective and the recommendation of a new approach for the business took time to embed across the management team. I would estimate six-10 months for everybody to have built trust and confidence in the market expert. On average how much time (days per month) did the market expert work for you?

Patrick Buckley

Six-eight days per month. Would you recommend the Accelerator programme to other clients? Yes, and I have on many occasions. Nonetheless, you must also be willing to listen, be open to change and prepared to invest for the medium to long term. Has it been possible to measure your Return on Investment? An overall investment of approx. £400k over the past three years will be directly responsible for a return of circa £150million over the next 10 years through the new partnership agreements that have been put in place. Still, many aspects of the engagement would be very difficult to measure in financial terms, in particular how the capability of the team, at all levels, has been driven to new heights by our forward facing agenda and refocused approach.

TAKING TO THE STREETS: EC Charging expects 50 per cent growth in turnover

EC CHARGING The company develops and supplies high speed network enabled on street electric vehicle charging stations. EC Charging is the only company in Europe that has developed a charging station that complies 100 per cent with ESB Ecars European technical specification. EC Charging has now turned its attention to Britain, where significant funding has been put in place for charging stations by the Government. With British contracts secured, EC Charging expects to see 50 per cent growth in turnover this year. The company has also developed a charging station suitable for the Nordics and is now entering the Norwegian market.
