Super stackers: Local team tops the competition

F

ive members of Lady’s Island Stacking competed at the Georgia State Sport Stacking Championships at Columbus State University on Saturday, Feb. 2. In the girls 13-14 division, Team USA’s Anna Smith won all three individual events. In the boys 9-10 division, Connor Fraser won the 3-33 and the 3-6-3 and Elijah Fess finished third in the Cycle. In the girls 9-10 division, Team USA’s Molly Smith had one first and two second-place finishes and set three state records. Eli and Molly Smith won the 10U doubles event while Elijah and Connor placed third. Anna and her dad, Harry Smith, placed first in the 11+ child/parents doubles competition. Eli and his dad won at 10U child/parent doubles with a new state record. Molly and her dad placed second in the same event. Connor, Eli, Elijah and Molly went undefeated in the head-to-head relay and set a new overall state record in the timed relay.

Newest Beaufort County Council member elected, sworn into office The newest member of Beaufort County Council was sworn into office Monday February 4 at 10 a.m. in Council Chambers in Beaufort.

Roberts Vaux, Jr., known as Tabor, won a special election last Tuesday, Jan. 29, to fill the Council District 9 seat left vacant by Weston Newton, who was elected to be a state representative.

Vaux has spent almost his entire life in Bluffton.

He is a graduate of Hilton Head High School,

The Citadel and the Charleston School of Law. After law school, he served as an assistant solicitor, prosecuting criminal cases in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Colleton and Allendale counties. The practice Tabor is now a part of focuses on person injury, civil litigation, DUI and criminal defense. He also serves as a South Carolina State Constable and prosecutor for the Town of Port Royal.

On Friday, Jan. 25, the BeaufortJasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) Board of Directors released Ken Griffin of his duties as General Manager, effective immediately.

Ed Saxon, Deputy General Manager for Engineering and Operations, has been named acting General Manager.

Mr. Saxon has over two decades of service at BJWSA, and looks forward to continuing in his new role.

“We look forward to continuing to serve our customers with superior water and sewer services, and have the utmost confidence in Ed and our excellent staff to do so,” said Brandy Gray, BJWSA board chair. “This is a personnel matter, and we will not discuss details due to privacy considerations,” she added.

Man makes bomb threat, gets arrested

A Beaufort man was arrested Thursday, Jan. 31 after making a bomb threat to a local car dealership.

Just before 10 a.m., Sheriff ’s deputies responded to Dan Vaden Chevrolet (2811 Boundary Street) in reference to the business receiving a bomb threat via phone. Employees advised that a male caller had stated that everyone needed to get out of the building because he had put a bomb inside.

The business was evacuated and searched by members of the Beaufort County Sheriff ’s Office Bomb Team, however, no device was located.

investigation, the call was traced to a payphone in the area of Sunhouse Petroleum (3448 Trask Pkwy). Upon review of video surveillance from the store, investigators observed a white male making a call from the phone at the same time the bomb threat was received.

The suspect, identified as 39-year old Tarrie Daniel Reynolds, was located at nearby Sunshine Auto Sales, where he was working as a mechanic. After being positively identified, Reynolds was placed under arrest and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he remains awaiting a bond hearing.

The motive for the threat remains unknown.

What do you do when you are on the web? Do you just use it to check out the news, weather, and email before heading to work? Would you like to get more out of your web surfing experience? Well, there are a bunch of awesome websites that allow you access to many different types of content. No matter what you are looking for (news, music, crazy videos) there is a website out there that has it.

Here is a list of the best sites out there.

1. Youtube.com (Content: Videos) This site is definitely a no-brainer. You can find just about any video about anything on YouTube. Whether you are looking for a recipe, DIY project, help on a technical issue or just want to be entertained by something, just type it in the search bar, and you might just be amazed at what you find. (Warning, can be addictive!)

2. Facebook.com (Content: Varied) Everyone knows about this site, but did you know you can use it to do much more than just talk with family and friends?

It is a giant social media experience!

You can use it to keep up with all of your favorite stars and idols. You can also use it to support small business in your area as well. That is what that little “like” button does. It allows you to follow others and lets you see the content that others put out. That is how I personally inform people of amazing tech breakthroughs and give people cools tips about the technology they use. (“Like” Digital Remedi on Facebook and you will receive the Daily Dose, small tips for your everyday tech life!)

3. Pandora.com (Content: Music) This is one of my personal favorites.

Lifehacker.com is one of my favorites because it gives you ideas and insight into things that you might not have thought of before. I have learned a lot of little things to make my life easier from this site and I know you will too.

The Internet is full of information, too much information to count. The main thing to know about the Internet is how to get to that information. Thankfully, we have Google to help us. I hope that you will try these sites out for yourself and see what awesome things they hold.

The gift of pain and dis-ease

Yes, I said “gift.” Pain and dis-ease are some of the greatest gifts that we receive in our lifetime — a wake-up call to check in, re-evaluate our lifestyle choices and make necessary changes so our body can heal.

You see, every illness or symptom in the body is a perfect response to interferences in our original design.

These interferences can occur in the mind, body, or spirit; they can be chemical, physical or emotional. The body is designed to survive and will quietly do the best it can for as long as it can while we continue to do the things we’ve always done. Most syndromes or “dis-eases” begin long before we become aware of them and by then, one or more areas of the body are in exhaustion and exhibiting signs and symptoms. Some will ignore the message until it gets loud enough to seek help and some will go in

search of what is “wrong” or what needs to be fixed. Once a label or diagnosis is given, most will seek ways to fight it, kill it or “attack it from all sides,” all from outside influences.

The body does nothing wrong as it only responds to what we put in, on or around it. If these aren’t congruent to original design, the body has to work harder to figure out what to do with it. Dis-ease is simply the body showing us that we are living out of balance and not in a state of ease, telling us to wake up and begin new ways of living in mind, body and spirit.

Health is a journey that often begins with a diagnosis, that moment in time where we either choose the role of scared victim or courageous victor. It can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. I am honored to work with folks who make a decision to do things differently, to choose their life experience,

rather than fall prey to it. It’s not to say there isn’t a fear once there is a label attached to your health, of course there is. But fear is just an energy rattling around inside and can be turned into fierce courage with just a simple shift of perspective. There are countless resources available on how to turn every illness around and they all begin within, with a commitment to do things differently, to get the body back into a state of balance, allowing the brilliance within to begin reorganizing with a new energy so it can heal.

Wellness centers are associated with cancer and heart centers around the world for those who have survived and are on the other side of their illness. They all teach ways to eat for health, exercise for vitality, and to meditate to reduce stress. So, why do so many wait for an event that could just as easily take them out of the game, to begin looking at what got them there in

the first place ... their lifestyle?

We live and die on a cellular level.

All trillion cells are vibrating, filtering, and working hard to keep us alive.

Understanding this, we can ask ourselves, “What am I fueling these cells with?”

Processed foods or real foods grown on the land? Water or sugary soda? Am I giving them too much to manage at one time or am I slowly delivering it to them, allowing the time to process everything?

I think of my cells as little people in there working hard and my job is to make it as easy for them as possible. It took the gift of an illness for me to wake up and begin thinking like this. I trust that my body is working hard for me, I may as well do my part by being a good steward and giving it what it needs to maintain balance. Have you received your “gift”? This past week, I sat down with a girlfriend and had quite the conversation about our beauty history of mishaps, bloopers, blunders and wardrobe malfunctions, minus the aide of a personal assistant to tuck us back in. Aspirin and AMD: Separating correlation from causation

A patient of mine recently asked me if he should stop his aspirin since he read an article about a study that showed that aspirin use may cause Agerelated Macular Degeneration (AMD).

(Never mind that this patient doesn’t have AMD, but does have a significant past medical history of coronary artery disease, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.) The media has picked up this story and there have been a number of misleading headlines about aspirin and AMD. Some have been quite alarmist. While a recent study did reveal an increased risk of late AMD in people who took aspirin regularly, there is a lot more to the story. And, as they say, the devil is in the details.

The article that was recently published only observed a large group of people who were already part of an ongoing demographic study. In this case, it was the population of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, where the health of the residents has been monitored for decades.

A review of 5,000 people in that study showed that aspirin users had a 1.4 percent increased risk of getting wet AMD as opposed to a 0.6 percent risk for those who did not take aspirin regularly. Only 10% to 15% of people with AMD develop wet AMD. When the risk statistics are applied to the population as a whole, the actual risk is minimal. It’s actually a very small increased risk.

There has never been a randomized clinical trial on the use of aspirin among people with macular degeneration. That would involve taking two groups of people and giving aspirin to one group and not to the other and recording their eye health over a long period of time. Such a study would give us a lot more useful information than an observational study.

But we cannot say that aspirin use is a cause of the increased risk, for a number of reasons. One is that only a controlled clinical trial might give enough data to make such a statement and we don’t have that data now. Also, the age at which people start taking daily aspirin for heart health is about when early signs of macular degeneration can be seen. Heart disease and poor circulation are known risk factors for AMD. So, is it the aspirin or the heart condition that contributed to the development of wet AMD? Dr. Barbara Klein, from the University of Wisconsin, is the lead author in the study. She noted that it requires more study and that the link between aspirin and AMD risk is not clearly understood. In the meantime, “One should not alter aspirin use based on these findings. It’s better to have blurry vision but still be here to complain about it than to die of a heart attack.”

Make sure your internist and cardiologist know you have macular degeneration — and that your ophthalmologist knows you take aspirin for your heart. As with most things, the risk needs to be balanced against the benefits.

Groups partner to offer entrepreneur workshop The Technical College of the Lowcountry and Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce have partnered with BizBuilderSC to announce a 12-session workshop open to entrepreneurs who want to expand their existing business and need the skills to make it grow. The workshop is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.

NxLevel for Entrepreneurs (Existing Businesses) will be held at the Technical College of the Lowcountry, Beaufort Campus from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, April 9 through June 25. Cost is $195 and includes book,

materials and snacks.

BizBuilderSC is the statewide entrepreneur and small business training program that provides the framework and basic skills to develop and grow a small business. BizBuilderSC is the expansion of the successful FastTracSC program and is a direct result of increased demand for entrepreneur training across the state.

The opening reception for ‘The Art of Carew Rice’

If you have a chance, drop by the Verdier House downtown for the wonderful exhibit of scissor cut silhouettes by the late great Lowcountry artist Carew Rice. The exhibit was beautifully organized by Isabel Reeves with Historic Beaufort Foundation Executive Director Maxine Lutz. Bravo to the second great Historic Beaufort Foundation event this year! (After the recent oyster roast.) Much of the artwork was kindly on loan from the collections of Eleanor Burns and Wayne and Melissa Wicker. There was a lovely print for sale and the proceeds will benefit HBF. It will still be available to buy at the Verdier House ground floor store.

Carew’s talented grandson Clay Rice was also on hand. He’s an author and silhouette artist in his own right and has produced a children’s book called ‘The Lonely Shadow� about a lonely shadow looking for a child to belong to. He has a new silhouette children’s book coming out in March called “Momma Lets Make a Moon.�

Carew Rice’s work captures in simple black and white silhouettes the living essence of the untamed natural drama of the Spanish moss laden trees, birds, animals and colorful characters that populated the Lowcountry in the early part of the last century. It’s amazing he did all these beautiful pieces with a simple pair of scissors. charlotte brown’s lifetime work to

preserve Gullah culture

friend to David Brown. Charlotte recalls, “It was love at first sight! And continues to be a wonderful marriage 30 years later.”

Her husband, Colonel Brown, is the respected Chief of Staff for the Beaufort County Sheriff ’s Office where he has worked for more than 15 years.

The couple is proud of their three children — Rena Frances Brown, 40, Patricia Perez, 37, and William Bailey, 34 — and 9 grandchildren: Malike, Jourdin, Julian, Fernando, William, Emmanuel and triplets Justin, Jason and Jasmine.

Charlotte worked as a teacher and administrator at Battery Creek High School for 30 years where she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” and was the first African American female administrator.

She’s also the immediate past president of the Beaufort Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta where she has been an active member for 43 years.

Says Charlotte, “Because Beaufort is my home, I have always had an interest in the role of African Americans in the development, history and the future of this area. I come from a large family and I have a strong sense of love for the family unit.

I believe that everyone must take an active role in the growth of our home because it is where we live and I am always proud of my home and my roots. My philosophy is that in order for your personal world to be better, you must take an active role in its development otherwise you will keep getting what you’ve got.”

She believes in the phrases: “Shake things up a little and step out on faith” and “With God on your side, all things are possible.”

About the future, Charlotte says, “As president of the Gullah Cultural Alliance, I want to help lead the charge as the Original Gullah Festival evolves into something much larger and to help develop a much stronger Gullah presence in the community and the Lowcountry. I work very closely with the new festival director, Mrs. Sharon J. Millen, and the Executive Director of the Gullah Cultural Alliance Mr. Curtis Dansby to stay focused on our new direction of growth.”

The mission of the Gullah Cultural Alliance is to preserve the Gullah culture through education, arts and entertainment.

The group recently held its Brandyfoot Awards and Inauguration Gala at the Holiday Inn where Ms. Mikelle Chisolm was co-chair and Mrs. Phyllis Sullivan was Emcee. There, the Gullah Cultural Alliance Board members presented many awards and trophies. Their honorees were Rev. John Dortch for Community Service; Mr. Steve Curless for Humanitarian Efforts; St. LaSalle Vaughn (Posthumously) for Citizenship; Rev. Kenneth Hodges for Gullah Preservation; Mr. Jonathan Green for media recognition; and, Rev. Leonard Smalls for overall accomplishments.

Performers at the gala included Aunt Pearlie Sue, Mr. Scott Gibbs and the Eddie Pazant Quartet featuring Mr. Teddy Adams of Savannah.

When it comes to her beloved hometown of Beaufort, Charlotte says, “I love the sincere friendliness and kindness of the people who live here. I love that Beaufort still remains unique in appearance but also carries a sense of development. And I love that most people who live here, love Beaufort whether they were born here or just moved here a month ago and they demonstrate it and express it proudly.”

Charlotte Pazant Brown, who grew up in downtown Beaufort on Green Street, graduated salutatorian of Robert Smalls High School Class of ‘67 and has been going strong ever since. She is currently the president of the Gullah Cultural Alliance, and is former president of the Gullah Festival, a successful annual local cultural event she helped co-found with her mother, three sisters, and a friend, and a cause that she has championed for the past 27 years.

Says Charlotte, “The festival was founded because we could see where there was a void of the recognition of African American celebrations and a lack of the preservation of a culture here in the Beaufort area. We realized that there was something unique about our heritage and this area compared to anywhere else in the world. We recognized that the term ‘Gullah’ and all that is associated with it was not something to be ashamed of. Gullah was a tradition, a legacy, a custom, a culture, which needed to be respected, preserved and celebrated.”

The first Gullah Festival the friends put on was small; however, it quickly grew and its list of awards and firsts has only grown from there. In the past 27 years, the festival was recognized by the South Carolina Parks Recreation & Tourism Dept. as the “Most Outstanding Event or Festival of the Year” for towns the size of Beaufort. It has also been spotlighted on “60 Minutes,” “National Geographic” and “The Today Show.” It was recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of the “Top 20 Events in the entire Southeast.”

The National Bus Association also named the festival among the Top 100 Events in the Nation.

Charlotte said, “All of the accomplishments of the festival would not have been possible for the last 27 years if it had not been for the many dedicated workers who gave of their time and their efforts to be a part of something much bigger. They made everything work. I will forever be thankful to them. We recognized some of them last week at our second Brandyfoot Awards Gala.”

Sailing Club youth to represent US in international regatta The Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is delighted to announce that Alex Mazzeo, 13, son of Paul and Lisa Mazzeo of Beaufort, has been selected to represent the United States at the 30th International Lake Garda Optimist Class sailboat regatta near Verona, Italy this March.

“We are all very proud of Alex.

He’s worked hard to build his skills and is a tough competitor,” said Dr. Ricky Akers, chairman of the Club’s Junior Sailing program. Optimists are small, single-handed sailboats that children begin sailing at about age 8.

“Boys and girls learn to sail and race in Optimists. In addition to sailing skills, they gain confidence, self reliance and problem solving skills that benefit them throughout life. It’s really fun to watch,” Akers said.

Last year, Drummond Koppernaes (then 14), son of Christian and Robin Koppernaes of Beaufort and also a participant in the Club’s Junior Sailing program, was selected to represent the US in a similar regatta in Holland.

What team do you pull for: Gamecocks or Tigers?

When I first moved to Beaufort, I was approached by a very serious fellow classmate who demanded, “Do you pull for Clemson or Carolina?” I was just about 6 years old, and had just cozied my monogrammed self into life in the Lowcountry. Truth was, I had no idea what he was talking about. So I ran back to my mom and repeated the question. It was that day that I realized that I had to make a decision quickly. Will I be adorned on any given Fall Saturday in orange or maroon? Since that time I have chosen my alliance, but not wishing to lose any readers, I will not reveal my choice.

As I said in my last article, last week was Spirit Week

at Beaufort Academy and Thursday was favorite college/sports team. I came to school in my “get-up” only to be greeted by almost five times as much Gamecock maroon than Clemson orange. Even the kids in the kindergarten were in their Grace Stewart Carolina cheerleading uniforms and Gamecock jerseys. However, I entered the middle school building and turned to my right only to see little Miss Hope Gray taking pride in her tiger, paw print, orange attire. Every single person at Beaufort Academy takes as much pride in their

college team as they do in their own school.

As much as the school was divided on Thursday, the next day — BA blue-and-white day — brought us all together, united in our allegiance to our school.

The ever-lasting maroon/orange feud is always fun whether you are in your game day dress in the first row at “Death Valley” or watching the Cocks pummel yet another opponent from your man cave at home.

Either way, it is continuously enthralling to be a part of the game (and part of the trash talk). Wherever returning alumni have attended and wherever current “Beaufortonian” students are now, either college provides a great education. So who do YOU pull for?

AP Biology students at Beaufort Academy recently completed an evolution lab that used a mathematical model to investigate the relationship between allele frequencies in populations of organisms and evolutionary change. Using mathematical programs that the students created, they were able to see how natural selection, non random mating, gene flow and small populations can cause changes in allele frequencies.

Storytelling opportunities Quite a few opportunities are being arranged for people who want to share their tales, and for the folks who just want to listen too. Storytellers of all ages and styles should contact ARTworks about upcoming performances, competitions, and troupes. (379-2787!)

“Storytelling is an art form,” explains JW Rone, the executive director of ARTworks. “It’s a form of entertainment, a way to share history and culture. We are all storytellers.”

First, a Call for Liars: If you can spin a yarn, consider performing at ARTworks on Sundays, February 17, March 10, March 24 (all at 3 p.m.) and then compete at The BIG Story Fest & Liars Competition, April 11-14.

Bil Lepp, a five-time champion of the West Virginia Liars’ Contest, will serve as one of the judges and the MC of the BIG Liars Competition.

ages, and residences. It’s an esteemed gathering of those who shoot the breeze with the greatest of ease, of the lying liars and the audiences who laugh with them.

Big names in classical music to play at USCB This season, pianist Jeremy Denk will make solo appearances in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium and London’s Wigmore Hall. Fortunately for Lowcountry residents he will also be performing at the USCB Center for the Arts on Sunday, February 10 along with the extraordinary young violinist Stefan Jackiw and the USCB Festival Series host and cellist, Edward Arron.

In 2012, Denk made his debut as a Nonesuch recording artist with a pairing of masterpieces old and new: Ligeti’s highly complex Études and Beethoven’s final Piano Sonata. This album was featured on “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross, while BBC Music’s review concluded: “All in all, it’s a marvel.”

An avid chamber musician, the pianist has most recently spent considerable time touring with violinist Joshua Bell, and French Impressions — their recording of Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Ravel was recently released on the Sony Classical label, winning the 2012 EchoKlassik award. Known for his witty and personal music writing, which has appeared in he New Yorker, the front page of the New York Times Book Review, Newsweek, and on the NPR Music website, Denk also has a popular blog.

He is also preparing to be the artistic director of the 2014 Ojai Music Festival.

Jackiw made his European debut in London in 2002 to great critical acclaim, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Benjamin Zander. His sensational performance was featured on the front page of London’s Times, and The Strad reported, “A 14-year-old violinist took the London music world by storm.”

Born in 1985 to physicist parents of Korean and German descent, Stefan Jackiw began playing the violin at the age of 4. His teachers have included Zinaida Gilels, Michèle Auclair, and Donald Weilerstein. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University, as well as an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory. In 2002, the young artist was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. He makes his

home in New York City.

‘Love Letters’ makes everyone a believer in love Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the Beaufort Theatre Company has a special treat for you and yours with the play Love Letters on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. When A.R. Gurney wrote “Love Letters,” he created so much more than a story about a collection of letters exchanged between lifelong friends. Over 23 years after its debut performance, his Pulitzer Prize-nominated play is still connecting with audiences all over the world as the two characters in his play share their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, and victories and defeats throughout their separated but shared lives.

Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd, III, grew up together in upper-class comfort in the Northeast region of the country, always friends but never boyfriendgirlfriend. ‘Love In Bloom’ at Red Piano Too That very special day, set aside to celebrate love, is rapidly approaching.

The Red Piano Too Art Gallery has assembled a February art exhibit to celebrate “Love in Bloom.”

Tony Cirico is the featured artist for this exhibit. She is a celebrated glass artist who says,“I love working with glass because it is so beautiful and there are no mistakes.”

She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., went to Paul Smith College in the Adirondacks and moved to Hilton Head after graduation. “As a child my grandmother inspired me to create art,” Tony said. “I continued my studies at the College of Charleston with a focus on oil painting.

After I married in 2000, I realized painting was no longer for me and I looked to glass as a new outlet for my creativity. Glass is a natural element. The colors in glass are amazing. As my family grew, everyone became involved. My son Dante sold his first piece at 2 years old.

Beaufort Fund to award grants to area nonprofits Sixty nonprofit groups will share $565,000 in grants from Coastal Community Foundation’s Beaufort Fund, to be awarded on Friday, February 8.

The fund invites applications annually for grants of up to $15,000 from nonprofit organizations in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties.

This is the 15th year that awards will be made. Grants made since 1999 total more than $5.6 million.

From an initial field of more than 100

applicants, 60 finalists were named by a 10-member review committee. Each finalist submitted a complete proposal and was visited by a member of the committee, and every one of the finalists was recommended for awards of varying amounts.

Fred Washington, Jr. of Beaufort chairs the Review Committee, whose members all live in the four-county area served by the program.

Of the 60 grant recipients, five were named to receive three-year awards:

Edna Crews, Regional Vice President for the Community Foundation, said, “The long-term intentions of the anonymous donor who created The Beaufort Fund years ago are being fulfilled. The Beaufort Fund is an

endowment that will generate grantable dollars in perpetuity to benefit the nonprofit sector as it evolves in serving this four-county service area. Of the 60 groups receiving grants this year, a third of them didn’t even exist when The Beaufort Fund was created.”

Following a meeting of Coastal Community Foundation’s Board in Beaufort on Friday, February 8, grant checks will be presented at an early evening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Shed in Port Royal.

Marge and I met on a blind date in Roanoke, Virginia. She was a secretary for the city, and I was a sophomore at VA Tech, a military college then. We got engaged at the ring dance in the Spring of 1952 and were married on June 5, 1953. That weekend I graduated from college, and became a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. We had no car. Margie’s cousin very graciously offered his new Buick to us on our wedding day. That morning my best man and I drove his new car downtown to pick up the wedding ring at the jewelers. When we reached the jewelers, I asked my best man to circle the block while I went in.

He stayed away for a long time and finally came walk up the sidewalk. He told me he wrecked the car and it had to be towed. Not the best start to our wedding day! We had no money for a honeymoon.. However, after five months training at Fort Bliss, Texas, I was assigned to the Fifth Infantry Division just outside Munich. That year and a half in Germany was our honeymoon. The first of our five sons was born in the 2nd Army Field Hospital.

We will be married for 60 years on June 5th this year. We recently moved to Morningside and have enjoyed everyone! The activities are innovative and frequently the high light of the day. We are thankful to be here together.

Grant from JCPenney goes toward YMCA afterschool programs Wardle Family YMCA recently received a $5,000 grant from JCP Cares, JCPenney’s new charitable giving program, to provide school-aged children with financial assistance to attend afterschool programs at the Y. This gift provides children in the Beaufort county community, who otherwise could not afford to participate, with access to lifeenriching afterschool programs that cultivate the values, relationships and skills kids need to thrive.

This is the fourth year that JCPenney has supported the local Y’s afterschool programs, which serve 150 children.

According to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization, 15.1 million U.S. children are left unsupervised after 3 p.m. during the school year. Studies show participation in afterschool programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children from disadvantaged households.

“As a company founded on the Golden Rule, JCPenney has a strong legacy of giving back,” said Miki Woodard, president of JCP Cares and vice president

of philanthropy at JCPenney. “We are firmly committed to organizations like the Y, which truly make a difference in their communities.”

Every time I eat at Shoofly Kitchen on Boundary Street in Beaufort, it reminds me of the iconic diners found in almost every small town where I grew up in northern New Jersey. The lively atmosphere, the open kitchen, the friendly service and, most importantly, the delicious home-cooked food make Shoofly a favorite among locals.

I had Mike’s Gamecock Grinder made with grilled chicken, bacon, tomato and melted Provolone with a secret sauce served toasted on a deli roll. I try to stay neutral when it comes to the rivalry between the USC Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers, but after eating this sandwich, I could be persuaded to Clockwise from above: Gamecock grinder; Soup and sandwich special with French cheer for the Gamecocks. Out of South Africa, again

Having started something last week, it only makes sense that I finish it this week. Last week, in discussing wines from South Africa, I briefly mentioned a new grape variety and just left it kind of hanging there. So now we must learn more about this red wine grape called Pinotage.

Pinotage is in South Africa what Cabernet Sauvignon is in Napa and Malbec is in Argentina. Unlike Napa and Argentina, though, who both imported their signature varieties, South Africa “created” its. In 1925, it was bred as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, a variety from the Rhone Valley. Cinsaut was known as “Hermitage” in South Africa, a connection to the great Rhone red wine with the same name. (Because it is a blend of two “vitis vinifera,” this grape is not considered a hybrid.)

Pinotage, the name, is a combination its two parent varieties names. A typical Pinotage wine is deep red in color, with smoky, bramble and earthy flavors.

Sometimes there are tropical fruit flavors like bananas, sometimes sweet and jammy flavors close to those of Zinfandel, sometimes raspberry liqueur, sometimes berries and meat and smoke like red Cotes du Rhones. All of which shows us we need to try more than one Pinotage. Before we decide if we like it or not.

In 1925, Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, was credited with this new grape. He was trying to combine the best qualities of the two grapes he used. He planted four seeds from his new variety in his own garden.

Having done that, though, it seems he forgot about them. In 1927, he left the university and went to KWV, a wine co-op, and his garden was overgrown.

The university sent in a crew to cleanup, and, luckily, a young lecturer, walking by at the time of the cleanup, knew about the plantings and saved them. The vines were given to Perold’s successor, CJ Theron, who grafted the vines to stronger rootstocks, and, when Perold visited, they looked at the newly grafted shoots, picked the best one for growing

and named it Pinotage.

The first Pinotage wine was made in 1941. In 1959, at the Cape Wine Show, a Pinotage wine was the champion and Pinotage was established. In 1991, a surge in Pinotage growing and popularity occurred. That was the year a Pinotage wine maker, Beyers Truter, won “Wine Maker of the Year” at England’s International Wine and Spirit Competition. The label, deconstructed

At some point in recent history we have been led to believe that combinations of non-foods, unknowns and chemicals are what constitute food for our Best Friends.

When I came to understand what “dog food” was really made of, I gained new appreciation for a dog’s inbred vital force and will to survive, and usually be in pretty good spirits, on a diet of practically nothing.

What follows are the ingredients from the label of one the most popular dog food brands, explained. It’s directly the white bag with colorful drawings of vegetables in the dog food aisle at most major grocery stores that the FDA is currently investigating. Here’s what’s in it, right from the label, including my commentary: Ground yellow corn (Number one ingredient. That means that at least 95% of this particular kibble is corn. The percentage is standardized by AAFCO — Association of American Feed Control Officials — that provides model regulations for the pet food industry.

This is the third straight year a BA chess team player has won this title. Beaufort Academy Chess Coach Darrin Rogers said, “The team is playing phenomenal chess.” The chess team will be tested in May when they attend the K-6 national chess tournament in Tennessee.
