A healthy New Year’s resolution for your eyes By Mark Siegel, MD, FAAO

Each year as the New Year approaches, people around the world resolve to make changes that will result in longer, happier and healthier lives. Often people are determined to lose weight while others are committed to kicking unhealthy habits such as smoking. This year I would like you to add, “Get a Glaucoma Eye Exam!” to the list of healthy resolutions, and Glaucoma Awareness Month in January is the perfect time to do it. Glaucoma normally progresses so slowly that there are usually no warning signs before permanent damage has occurred to the eye. Therefore, it is vital

to educate the American public about the importance of a yearly eye exam to increase early detection and treatment of glaucoma to help prevent vision loss. What is glaucoma? In a healthy eye, clear fluid is constantly being made behind the iris and leaving the eye through a microscopic drainage canal in the front of the eye. If this drainage channel becomes blocked, the pressure inside the eye goes up and often causes glaucoma damage to the optic nerve. This is the nerve that connects the eye to the brain so damage to it causes loss of vision. Who is at risk? While the causes of glaucoma are not

completely known, we do know that risk factors for its development include a family history of glaucoma, race and older age. Glaucoma may affect people of any age from newborns to the elderly but is more common in adults as they approach their senior years. AfricanAmericans, Hispanics and people with

Totally astound yourself this year! By Martha O’Regan

“Let’s totally astound ourselves this year” is a quote from a past calendar marking the month of January that continues to be my official mantra for each brand new year, so full of possibilities. Have you set those resolutions yet? What will make this year astounding for you? Consider changing the word resolution which is “the process of resolving

something such as a problem or dispute” to intention, which means the “quality or state of having a purpose in mind.” Resolutions sound so admirable when we make them, but the mere fact that we have failed so miserably in the past can conjure up those same memories of failure and tend to doom us right out of the gate. They have become the brunt of so many jokes and often fall in the “why bother, it’ll never happen?” club. Intentions have a whole

www.genegrace.com Headaches Due to Bite?

“Headache is one of the most common reasons for physician visits by patients. One study tracked 953 headache patients for five years. They made nearly 4,000 visits to doctors in seeking relief from headache. Though physicians have identified and classified muscle tension headache, the medical literature is virtually absent of any treatment other than drugs or psychological therapy. These patients went to every conceivable medical specialty but only 8% of those visits were to dentists. Every dentist who has treated patients knows that the bite can cause multiple health problems termed, TMJ syndrome or dysfunction.” (Mytronics: Vol 23, Nov. 07) My daughter and partner Katherine Hefner and I have treated hundreds of patients with great success eliminating such problems as temporal (side of head) headaches, headaches at the base of the skull, neck ache, jaw pain, shoulder pain and ringing of the ears. 4

different connotation allowing for a fresh start, and a new perspective. Resolutions fix a problem whereas intentions follow a purpose. Is your life a problem or is it about fulfilling a purpose? So, what is your purpose and who benefits from it? Tune into your initial reaction to this question: Is it “I’m not sure of my purpose” or “I don’t have time to fulfill my purpose right now” or “I feel so lousy, I can’t possibly think about my purpose much less try to achieve it”? Or, are your already on your purpose filled journey? Consider making the commitment for this year to be different in all areas of your life, not just one or two. Life is a multidimensional journey and continuously overlaps with health, relationships, career, spirituality, etc. So instead of resolving to fix one problem in one area, intend to be balanced or find harmony in all areas. Write down a vision of where you would like to be in all areas of your life by the end of 2014. Get creative, dream big, and have some fun. Mark your calendar at various intervals, such as monthly or quarterly, to review and update this master list. Next, start a list of only the first steps to achieving each one of your goals. Make them small and reasonable steps with an intention of devoting an hour a day to them as a whole, not an hour for each

diabetes are also at increased risk of developing the disease. How is it treated? Most forms of glaucoma can be treated with pressure lowering eye drops. Some patients may also benefit from laser treatment (laser trabeculoplasty). A small portion of patients with severe glaucoma may require incisional surgery to permanently help shunt the aqueous fluid out of the eye. So please call your local ophthalmologist today to schedule your glaucoma screening for the New Year. or always at one time, but in varying increments. Put this list where you will look at it daily, checking off steps as they are achieved, then adding the next small and reasonable step. If you don’t believe you can find one hour a day now to devote to your health and well being, how will you find 24 to be sick or dead? Consider finding this hour for those you know, love and serve because they need you and your purpose. Despite making a commitment, we all have a tendency to lack follow through and before we know it, we are at the end of year forgetting we ever made a list. If you fall into this category, consider finding a wellness or life coach, or a good friend, to help you set goals and keep you accountable to them. Find someone who will not judge your slip ups but will gently guide you toward your purpose. Once you gain your momentum, then let go and fly on your own. No matter what direction you take to making this your best year ever, intend to “totally astound yourself ” on a regular basis. Live Well ... Have Fun.

BA alumni basketball game is a slam dunk Beaufort Academy held its annual Alumni Basketball Game on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at 3 p.m. Once again, the number and range of players was exciting to see, from the class of ’93 to the class of ’13. In addition, the game brought back many families of alumni, some parents who haven’t sat in the BA bleachers in 10 years, and a few wives and children of the players who watched their husbands and fathers play in their high

school gym for the first time. This year’s game was very special as it was played in memory of Carl Harper, a BA alumni (class of ’87) who passed away earlier this year. Carl was a basketball player during his time at BA, and since then had remained involved as a coach and alumni game regular. Thank you to the friends and family of Carl who came to the game and watched BA basketball in his honor.

Team photo, left to right, back row: Jim Wegmann (parent of alumni), Conner Akers (’13), Michael Bible (’12), Chris Ernestine (’09), Norman Witmer (’07), Chip Dinkins (BA Boys Head Coach), Chris Conefry (BA Coach), Josh Mixson (’06), Walter Gay (’07), Lawton Harper (’13), Framp Harper (’85). Front row: Kyle Cheung (’09), Leon Cheung (’03), Jack Griffith (’12), Ben Post (’10), Andy Burris (’93), Nathan Cheung (’12), Andy Cheung (’06), Patrick Walker (’11).

The game was a nail biter, down to the last basket. Kudos to Kyle Cheung who propelled the Blue Team to a 2-point victory over the White Team in the final seconds of the game. Thank you to the game referees, Jim Wegmann and Framp Harper (BA ’85). Special thanks to this year’s game sponsor Mikell, Weidner, Wegmann, & Harper, LLC.

Tip Off: Josh Mixson (white) and Michael Bible (blue).

The Harper Boys: Framp Harper (brother of Carl), Lawton Harper (nephew of Carl), Henry Harper (son of Carl), and Luke Harper (nephew of Carl). The game was played this year in memory of Carl Harper.

Family, friends and alumni came out to watch the game.

An in-depth look at the people, businesses and organizations that shape our community

book smarts&good hearts

the sidwells are a winning combination By Lanier Laney

Iowa natives Lloyd and Jane Sidwell “happened chance” on Beaufort when they presented at a Rural Social Work Conference at Penn Center in 1981. And after retiring here in 2010, Beaufort readers have reaped the benefits of their good work with their devotion to the “Books Sandwiched In” program. The Sidwells are both on the board of Friends of the Beaufort Library, which sponsors the Books Sandwiched In series, and this year they are co-chairs of the program. Lloyd has a graduate degree in social work from the University of Iowa and is a retired CEO of nonprofit family service and mental health organizations in Michigan, Illinois, and Houston, Texas. He led multi-corporate organizations from the late 1960’s to 2004 when he retired as CEO of Family Services of Greater Houston. Since moving to Beaufort he has completed the Senior Leadership Program and the Beaufort County Police Academy. He is currently working on the United Way CampaignNeighborhood Ambassador Program. Jane — who has a graduate degree in social work from Washington University as well as a nursing degree and is current president of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation — was appointed to the Tourism Development Advisory Committee (TDAC) of the Beaufort City Council a year ago and serves as recording secretary of Chapter W, P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization). The two began working on the Books Sandwiched In (BSI) project in 2011 when they joined the Friends of the Library board and were mentored by Sherry Hirsch and Gretchen Blickle, who were co-chairing the project at that time. They then worked with the selection committee in the Spring of

2012 to plan for the 2013 season and, again, now, for the 2014 season. Jane said, “It is always exciting to work with the selection committee in April to begin identifying the individuals and books to be considered for the upcoming season. We and the committee try to identify persons of local interest — authors, community leaders, ‘experts’ on particular topics, and ‘celebrities.’ It has been our hope, and the BSI tradition,

that both the book AND the presenter are of interest to our audience.” Adds Lloyd, “We know that audience favorites are those presenters who offer anecdotal experience, personal insight, and entertain the audience.” Books Sandwiched In is offered as a free program to the community, but the hope is that it will bring new memberships and donations to the Friends of the Library, as well as

participation in library events. Says Jane, “This year we have some exciting new donations such as a getaway package from Palmetto Bluff, rounds of golf at Dataw and Sanctuary, and books by local authors to offer as ‘drawings’ to our audience.” “This is a reading community,” said Lloyd about Beaufort. “We have heard from some of our audience that they have been attending for over 20 years! With the wealth of local authors and the eagerness of our audience to hear book presentations and participate in discussion, it is easy to plan the BSI program!” The kick off for the new season is this Monday, January 6. Jane invites the community to come to USCB Center for the Arts at 11:30 a.m. to enjoy coffee, cookies and presentations of great books. “This year, we are trying a new ending to the program with an evening presentation on Monday, March 3, with Debbi Covington presenting her book, ‘Celebrate Everything!’ Following her presentation, we will offer all participants a ‘celebration’ with Debbi’s appetizers and wine!” What could be a better night in Beaufort than that?!

wine

Three new red wines to ring in new year By Celia Strong

Beginning anew. So nice in so many ways, especially when wine and drinking it are concerned. Since we ended last year with a selection of three white wines, I though we could start this year with three red wines that are all made from the same grape variety. A common denominator for sure and it helps keep us organized. By now, we must have all learned, keeping organized when wine is part of something can be a bit harder. So, you learn how to outsmart yourself when you have to. Our first grape variety for the new year is Grenache. This is one of the most widely planted red varieties in the world, with France and Spain the biggest producers. In fact, it probably originated in Spain. Grenache needs hot, dry growing conditions because it ripens late naturally. Generally, the wines made from Grenache are lacking in acidity, tannin and color so it is often blended with other varieties. Which other varieties depends on where it is grown — other Rhône varieties in France, Tempranillo in Spain, etc. Grenache wines are usually spicy and berry-flavored. Also, they have red fruit flavors, raspberry and strawberry and white pepper notes. They are soft textured and have high alcohol levels. (Late ripening means higher sugar levels, which in turn means more alcohol in the finished wines.) Best results for these wines come from controlling the yields of the vines. These wines have a tendency to oxidize easily, which shows as color receding from the rim of the glass. As they age, Grenache wines lean toward more leather and tar flavors. Grenache is known by several names, also depending on where it is grown. Most likely, the grape known as “Garnacha” originated in the Aragon region in northern Spain. From there, plantings spread to Calatayud and other lands controlled by the Crown of Aragon, including the Italian island of Sardinia and the Rousillon area in southern France. By the 19th century, Grenache was well established in southeastern France, in the Rhône Valley and the Languedoc. In the 18th century, it was one of the first varieties introduced into Australian vineyards. (It did well there, until it was surpassed by

Celia Strong works at Bill’s Liquor & Fine Wines on Lady’s Island.

their now famous Shiraz wines.) Beginning in Spain, Garnacha is grown in Calatayud, Carinena and Campo de Borjia. Garnacha is also, sometimes, used in the Rioja region. Since the last part of the 20th century, total plantings of Garnacha in Spain have been declining, down from over 400,000 acres to about 203,000 acres. Our Spanish wine this week comes from a growers’ co-op, Bodega San

Alejandro (BSA), founded in 1962. Today, over 350 growers are members of BSA, with almost 3,000 acres in Calatayud. This is a Spanish DO region, declared in 1989. Eleven varieties are allowed in the DO, but Garnacha is by far the most popular and most planted. Our label is BSA member Las Rocas. (Literally translated, “rocas” is rocks, so now we know what the land here looks like.) Las Rocas Garnacha is a vibrant red color with dark cherry and blackberry flavors and aromas. There are some subtle oak (vanilla) notes and round, soft tannins. Part of the finished wine is barrel aged, in both French and American barrels. At $10.99, this is an easy to approach version of Spanish Garnacha. Moving on to our second Grenache wine, we have D66. An Orin Swift

“There is a character and quality of life here that we all love”

California version of this variety? No! It’s a French version. But no, actually, it’s kind of both. What does that mean? Orin Swift is a winery in Napa, California. But, they do own some vineyards in southeastern France. France is divided into numbered “départements;” number 66 is the one in which these vineyards are located. This Grenache wine is very much an American in style — big, rich, heavy and full-bodied. It is dark red, so dark it is almost opaque, with dark cherry aromas mixed with oak and vanilla notes. The body is intense and concentrated in your mouth with strawberries and more red fruit flavors and a long, lingering finish. There are small amounts of Syrah and Carignan blended in. Most Grenache wines are not as full and heavy as D66, but fans do love this wine. For $39.99. Our third Grenache wine is from Sardinia, an island located about 150

miles off the west coast of Italy. Of the 20 Italian DOC regions, this is the one with the smallest production level. Our impression of Italy, with all its wines and foods and culture based around them, does not seem to apply to Sardinia. Wine here, both culturally and historically, is much less important and noticeable. Most of their vineyards are on the western side of the island. Sella and Mosca is in the northwest corner of Sardinia. Interestingly, in Sardinia, our Grenache grape is known as Cannonau. Their version of the legend of its origins says it started on the island and spread from there to Aragon, the reverse of the more excepted version. The Grenache, or Cannonau, that grows here is slightly different from the grape from mainland Europe, having adapted to the conditions on Sardinia, meaning clay and sand soils, salt air. Sella and Mosca’s Cannonau, for $13.99, is made from estate grown grapes, 100 percent this variety, and aged two years in Slavonian oak barrels. It, too, is a dark red colored wine, with red fruit and violet aromas and some plum flavors. The most interesting thing about our third wine comes from an article by Dr. Oz. It seems that the residents of Sardinia tend to live much longer and healthier lives. Longer, like many live past 100 years old with no serious health issues. Their lifestyle and their dark red wine are given a lot of the credit for this. Apparently, the concentration of flavors and textures in Sardinian Cannonau wines are above and beyond those in other Grenache wines. So, I guess, so are the health benefits? Ever since this article by Dr. Oz was published, some customers have started drinking a glass of Sella and Mosca Cannonau every day. Some claim to feel better, some claim better cholesterol numbers, better blood pressure numbers, etc. Maybe the wine is helping. Maybe they are just relaxing a bit. Maybe we don’t know and never will. But, it might be worth a try. And, if we don’t like one Grenache wine, we’ve got others to go to. And, if one glass a day is good, maybe one and a half is too? Trying some of these wines can be fun and relaxing. Our new lifestyle? Healthy and happy! Enjoy.

Morning coffee with friends at a hometown café. School ball games. The changing of the seasons. The County Fair. Spending time with family or just a simple drive through the country side. There is a character and quality of life here in our area we all love. We’re proud to be a part of it.

Learn about canine behavior with Tracie Korol or adopt a furry friend

There’s an app for that By Tracie Korol

Do you and your Best Friend represent that phenomenon where dogs resemble their owners? It’s a sorry turn of events when that resemblance is because you’re both fat. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Trust for America’s Health estimate that by 2030, 50% of people in the U.S. will be obese. Currently, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention estimates that over 50% of dogs and cats are already overweight, and more than 20% are obese. We’re all on a steady downhill slide to tubby. It’s the Number One question I get: how do I get my dog to lose weight? Move more, eat less is the short answer but as a technology-obsessed society, we want it to be easier, but in a more complicated fashion. Enter the Fat Dog Diet (www. thefatdogdiet.com), a simple app designed to help you help your dog lose those extra pounds. The app, designed by Patty Khuly, VMD, integrates research-based weight-loss methods for healthy adult dogs, with added community support and feedback. The app includes calorie information for commercial foods, treats and the foods you can make at home. Plug in your dog’s vitals, the foods that go into him and simply follow along. Another part of this particular program is that Khuly is working with nutritionists, veterinary surgeons and rehabilitation specialists to gather data to determine whether an app for weight loss is more effective than current traditional methods. Dr. Khuly wants to know if her app delivers. Plus, it’s FREE. For those who feel compelled to share

their pets’ weight loss progress with others there’s PetMobi (www.petmobi.com). Petmobi is not only a pet social network — sort of a fat dog Facebook — and exercise calorie tracker but also helps owners set weight loss or maintenance goals, track daily calorie intake, record exercise and chart progress over time. Pet owners can share photos, post pictures, comments, encouragements and earn rewards with mPoints. It’s FREE, too. If you want to spend a bit of money and get very serious about the “move more” part, there’s an app to measure your Best Friend’s every activity. The Whistle Activity Monitor (www.whistle.com) is an on-collar device that measures how much your dog moves — walks, plays, runs, swims ... and rests. An accelerometer in the device detects motion, helping you determine if the casual stroll around the block is enough to burn a few calories or if you’re just going to have to up the game and play ball. It’s pricey when compared to simply throwing the stick for 20 minutes a day, but if you’re a hound for stats, this is for you. A couple other worthy apps that are nice to have around are PetFirstAid from JiveMedia and Tagg-The Pet Tracker.

And, sorry to say, as long as we have bad people in this community who steal dogs from yards for dog fighting training purposes, it’s just one more measure of security.

We Now Have “PEACE OF MIND”

“Since Mom has been at River Oaks Assisted Living its the first time in a while I have been able to leave the house and she LOVES IT! Mom does not stop talking about all the interesting residents that have now become close friends. not to mention the incredible River Oaks caregivers and staff. They also have amazing food at their Whistle Stop Cafe where every month they celebrate different cities with food and history just like they are traveling by train. Its something the residents look forward to every month. We are so glad we moved her here to River Oaks Assisted Living where we all now have Peace of Mind!”

Happy rail trails At a ground breaking ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 13, a crowd of local officials, community leaders and bicycle enthusiasts gathered at the site of the old Depot Building off Depot Road in Beaufort to commemorate the start of construction on the Spanish Moss Trail. As Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling noted, making the trail a reality was the result of public and private groups working together for a cause that will promote healthy activity and benefit the community. Weston Newton also praised the trail as a way to showcase the beauty of our natural resources. The first section is scheduled to be complete by Thanksgiving.
