The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce announced Candice Glover is coming back home to Beaufort to thank her supporters and celebrate the release of her debut album on 19 Recordings/Interscope Records, “Music Speaks,” with an album signing. Glover will sign albums and visit with her fans on Saturday, March 29 from 12 to 2 p.m. at Walmart, 350 Robert Smalls Parkway. “We are all so proud of Candice and all that she’s accomplished,” said Blakely Williams, Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce President & CEO. “We know how appreciative she is of her fans here in the Lowcountry and we are excited to help officially welcome her back home and celebrate this first album.” CDs will be available for purchase at Walmart. Downtown streetlight upgrades slowed As of March 14, the removal of old streetlights in downtown Beaufort has been slowed by recent rains and unmarked underground utilities, including high voltage lines and undocumented stormwater drains. Some parking spaces on the river side of Bay Street will be closed during construction, but others will remain available. “It’s one of those cases of ‘pardon our progress,’ and we want our downtown merchants and visitors to know that we are working hard to move this project forward,” Beaufort City Manager Scott Dadson said. “The end result will be a much prettier downtown with better lighting.” Work started earlier last week along the south side (river side) of Bay Street from Carteret to Scott streets. The contractor, JoCo Construction, has bored under Scott Street and an additional driveway access as part of the project.
By later this month, the entire southern side of Bay Street will have the old streetlights removed and work is scheduled to have started with pouring foundations to install the newer, brighter light fixtures and poles. Five of the existing gooseneck lights and their foundations already have been shut down, removed and placed into storage. Conduit, irrigation and a rock foundation have been put in the trench where the 16-inch brick band will improve the look of the sidewalk. Last Friday, work crews began removing debris from some parking spots so that they would be usable, though motorists were advised to use caution in those areas. “This isn’t as simple as unscrewing a light pole and bolting down the new one,” said Isiah Smalls, director of public works and facilities management for Beaufort. “The streetlights are connected in sections like Christmas tree lights,
so we have to disconnect one section, remove the old poles and dig up the electrical connections. “That’s where the contractor has run into problems. They’ve found lines for phones, electricity, stormwater, sewer and even a natural gas line. When it comes to Bay Street and other parts of downtown, there’s no document that shows what all is underground — and that makes it slow-going when we do projects like this streetlight upgrade.” Sidewalks along the river side of Bay Street remain open for pedestrians. Motorists are asked to use caution if parking near construction areas and to be aware of the orange fencing. Once Bay Street’s lamps are installed, work will continue across downtown, including Carteret, Charles, Scott, West and Port Republic streets. Main Street Beaufort USA is working with city leaders to keep downtown businesses and visitors informed.

news briefS Beaufort County holds See grand opening, tour County could collect April Air Day events new Coroner’s Office monies from tax refunds In April, Beaufort County will be hosting two unique events to raise awareness of aviation in our community and its critical role in local businesses and economic development. Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the first Air Day event will take place at the Beaufort County Airport located on Lady’s Island. A variety of aircraft will be on display. There will also be static displays from the Beaufort County Sheriff ’s Office, Beaufort County EMS and the Lady’s Island/St. Helena Fire Department. In addition, several aeronautical organizations will have table displays allowing the public to learn more about their product or service. Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the second Air Day event will take place at Signature Flight Support across the tarmac from the Hilton Head Island Airport. The event costs $5 for adults and is free for children.
Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen, the Beaufort County Sheriff ’s Office and Port Royal’s Mayor Samuel Murray will be part of the grand opening ceremony for the new Coroner’s Office. The ceremony will take place Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11 a.m. in front of the building located at 1804 Old Shell Road in Port Royal. Beaufort County Council Chairman Paul Sommerville will be the Master of Ceremonies. Afterwards, a tour of the building will be offered. This project involved demolition and renovation of the building that once housed Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs. Majority of the space will be shared by the Coroner’s Office and the Beaufort County Sheriff ’s Office Victim and Juvenile Services. The remaining space is being used as a morgue, which Beaufort County has never had. The project cost $850,000.
As Beaufort County residents start to receive refunds from their 2013 South Carolina income taxes, some may notice funds deducted for services rendered or taxes never paid to Beaufort County Government. The Setoff Debt Collection Act, Title 12-56-62 of the South Carolina Code, enables government entities to collect monies from residents’ state income tax refund. Notices regarding these potential reductions have been previously mailed to taxpayers as required by South Carolina law. Beaufort County departments currently using this type of monetary collection for unpaid bills or taxes include: Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Clerk of Court’s office, Magistrate Court and the Treasurer’s office. Since the mid-1980s, people have asked why this waterfront property, with scenic views of the Beaufort bay and marshes, has been used only for parking. Today there are options being explored to provide more parking in downtown Beaufort. Verity said redeveloping this location could be key to jumpstarting renewed interest in the downtown Beaufort shopping district and boosting the economy. The property anchors a corner of the core commercial district and serves as a gateway to the Bay Street entertainment row, Carteret Street’s 2
restaurant row, and to The Point’s historic homes. The approximate four-acre site is between Bay Street and the Beaufort River. It is adjacent to the city-owned Downtown Marina, two public parks — Freedom Park and Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park — and the downtown shopping and restaurant district. An analysis of the city’s retail, restaurant and hospitality economics by Seth Harry Associates identified redevelopment of the marina site as the best opportunity for making downtown more relevant to regional and local consumers. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen the business climate by attracting consumers with higher disposable incomes to shop, to work and to live downtown, which

should result in better operating results for the city, said City Manager Scott Dadson. Lowcountry Jaycees aim to unite young professionals through service For over 90 years, the South Carolina Junior Chamber of Commerce, more commonly known as the SC Jaycees (http://scjaycees. org/) has provided young professionals with the tools needed to succeed in areas of business development, management skills, individual training and community service. The tradition continues with the recently established Beaufort chapter, the Lowcountry Jaycees. In partnership with the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Port Royal, the Lowcountry Jaycees’ goal is to create a better community by providing personal growth, leadership development and community involvement opportunities for men and women between the ages of 21 and 40. They meet at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month; in April they plan to meet at Groucho’s Deli on Lady’s Island. Lowcountry Jaycees Vice President, Ben Boswell, recently attended the SC Jaycees’ annual year-end convention in Rock Hill and saw first-hand the infinite potential for this organization to enact positive change in the Beaufort community. Since the beginning of 2014, the chapter has brought together many young professionals who share a passion to make Beaufort County stronger. The members share a mutual compassion for the homeless community and are hoping to reach out to individuals in need in the future. Since 1969, a priority of the SC Jaycees has been to raise funds for Camp Hope, located
in Pendleton, SC. Camp Hope is a statewide residential camp for citizens with disabilities. Campers receive helpful experiences in an outdoor environment, develop the ability to work and play as a group, and provide new experiences unique to a camp setting. The Lowcountry Jaycees’ will support the Camp Hope priority, while contributing to a local cause, during their inaugural Tailgate Off! at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal on April 12, 2014. The event, from 3 to 8 p.m., will feature a cornhole tournament with a cash prize, the band Bootless, bouncy castles and cotton candy for the kids. Talk money before the wedding bells ring By Whitney McDaniel
Unless you and your spouse-to-be have spent a significant amount of time discussing how you plan to handle finances after the honeymoon, you may be setting yourselves up for a rough go — at least in the beginning, and maybe for your entire time together. Studies have shown that money is a frequent topic of arguments in many marriages. One of the reasons may be that couples don’t spend enough time talking about money before the “big day.” Marriage is a many-splendored thing, but when you begin to peel away the layers, one important thing you find is a business arrangement — that’s just one reason why it’s called a marriage “contract.” And as with any business arrangement, in a marriage you have money flowing in and money flowing out. As long as the inflow exceeds the outflow, the arrangement usually works. But a marriage isn’t a typical business — there’s an emotional aspect to everything, including the couple’s finances. To help get the discussion started, here are some issues you should address together before you tie the knot. Budgeting. Some say that the key to financial success is to spend what you have after saving, rather than saving what’s left after spending. Once you sit down and estimate your monthly income and expenses as a couple, it then becomes a matter of budgeting to control expenses
and setting money aside to help achieve your goals. Combining accounts. As engaged individuals, you probably already have your own savings, checking, and brokerage accounts. But as a couple, do you want to combine everything into joint accounts or keep them separate? Having separate accounts lets each of you feel independent, knowing that you can tap your finances whenever the need arises. On the other hand, joining accounts can help unite your goals and create a more effective investment program. Housing. If each of you already own real estate, you will need to face issues with housing, including: Will you live in one spouse’s home, or sell both homes and purchase a new one together? What will be the likely tax consequences of selling – especially if the sale will result in substantial capital gains or losses? Financial goals. In today’s economy it’s important to set aside money for emergency expenses in case of sickness or job loss — experts recommend saving three to six months’ living expenses. That’s why it’s important to establish financial goals and determine your priorities as a couple. Do you want to dine out often, or eat in and save? How much do you want to spend on traveling and entertainment? How about for buying and decorating a home, leasing a car, etc.? Debt. Some people are raised to never
borrow money unless it’s absolutely necessary. Others are taught that it is acceptable to take out a loan — even for a luxury item. Differing attitudes toward Whitney debt accumulation McDaniel is just one reason it’s important to know before the wedding what, if any, debts each of you is bringing to the marriage. If there is debt, decide whether to combine it or to keep separate credit histories and records. Many experts recommend that each individual retain his or her own credit cards and credit history. Doing so helps ensure financial independence and provides greater flexibility if either of you finds yourself alone at some point in the future. Also, if one of you has a poor credit history, it may be advisable not to commingle debt in order to retain the other’s better credit rating. Estate planning. Addressing estate planning is vital, regardless of your age. When two people commit to legal responsibility for each other, it’s appropriate to talk about how they want to provide for an orderly transfer of assets. Included in the discussion should be considerations of the financial implications of life insurance and what would happen if a wage earner or work-at-home spouse
were lost. Pay particular attention to beneficiary designations on life insurance policies, IRAs and 401(k) plans. These designations will supersede instructions for distributing assets included in a will or trust. Each provider — insurance company, financial institution or plan administrator — needs to be contacted to update the beneficiary designations on these valuable assets. (This step is particularly important in the case of a second marriage.) When appropriate, include your financial advisor, tax advisor, and attorney in financial discussions before you say, “I do.” Open and honest communication before your wedding day may help you avoid money arguments and financial problems in your marriage. Six Month Smiles

Local food business to collaborate with Beaufort Memorial Hospital Beaufort’s only source for all local and naturally produced foods is collaborating with Beaufort Memorial Hospital to provide hospital employees, volunteers and LifeFit members with convenient online access to local foods. In operation since 2011, Sea Islands Local Outlet (SILO) is a local food hub with a unique business model that utilizes a web-based market platform, or “webmarket,” to connect its customers with over 40 growers and producers — directly. Sharing similarities with a farmers market, vendors post weekly offerings and set their own prices. Consumers simply place orders each week during web-market hours. Growers and producers receive each week’s orders via email invoice, then immediately harvest or produce what is needed to fill each respective order. Producers deliver to SILO, which in turn hand packs each customer’s individual order and then transports it to one of several pick up locations around Beaufort County. The Beaufort Memorial Hospital campus will host SILO’s two newest pick up locations, making it more convenient for hospital staff and LifeFit members to 6

grab their locally produced foods. “It just seemed to make sense,” said Patrick Kelly, one of SILO’s owners. “Historically, hospitals have been synonymous with healing, but today, they are evolving into symbols of wellness. Eating healthy, locally produced food is a critical piece of overall wellness. Beaufort Memorial is making a statement both by being a model for healthier eating habits and supporting our local food system. This in turn grows a healthier local population and a healthier local economy.” added Kelly. The hospital is not only serving as a host site for SILO’s distribution, they are

financially incentivizing their employees, volunteers and LifeFit members to purchase local foods by subsidizing membership fees for SILO’s services. Incorporating not only the farmers market model but also aspects of a community co-op grocer, SILO’s primary revenue is through a modest annual membership fee that makes direct farmerto-customer purchase possible, without the typical retail mark-up. The food hub and the hospital came to an agreement, and were able to secure grant money that would enable the two campus pick up locations without needing to charge membership fees for the hospital and LifeFit customers. Mark Senn is the Senior Director of LifeFit Wellness Services and has been championing SILO from the beginning. “As a wellness center,” says Senn, “we help to educate our surrounding community on healthy living and preventative lifestyles. Consuming healthy foods is a critical part of overall health and wellness. We want to make access for our own employees, members and the community as simple as possible.” SILO hopes to help with customer education as well by conducting classes and
workshops through LifeFit that will center around the myriad benefits of a diet based on local foods. The first of these will be on Thursday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a free workshop on fermentation with a food preservation project that is traveling around the country. SILO began delivering orders to Beaufort Memorial in February but hopes the workshop will serve to better inform potential customers about this unique opportunity available right in their work place and community. The two BMH pick up options are: Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Beaufort Medical Plaza; and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the new LifeFit Building. Any SILO member throughout the county can use the BMH pick up locations by simply selecting their market preference on the website before shopping. Attraction or distraction? By Martha O’Regan Attraction or distraction: Which one is it? What if it is both? And, how do you know? With the Law of Attraction, science tells us we create our own reality through our thoughts, perspectives and personal beliefs. I believe there must also be a Law of Distraction, where we create reasons to fall off course, procrastinate or basically lose focus. Sometimes it’s subtle, like a video post that you felt compelled to watch, and other times, more obvious like an illness or drama in a relationship. Journeying along my path, feeling the twists and turns, noticing what is showing up or not, I have discovered how often both “created” and “built-in” distractions show up to divert or slow down progress. Although these distractions may create great annoyance, it helps to understand that they are somehow programmed in for our highest good. For example, when something shows up in our life that pulls us off course, creates laziness or procrastination, did we create a distraction or did we actually attract an opportunity to percolate on an idea or avoid something more difficult or dangerous? Did that “wrong turn” provide an opportunity to meet someone who ultimately supports our journey? I believe we are all created for a unique

Instead, begin paying closer attention to what is showing up in your life and realize that you are attracting exactly what you are putting out there, as a collective vibrational energy within and “out with” you. My favorite example is the person who
thinks positive thoughts, enjoys daily walks in nature, eats high frequency organic foods, yet has the 24 hour news station blasting because they need to have “background” noise, and wonder why they aren’t finding their bliss. Guess what? If the negative frequency of the news overrides all the positive frequency of your actions, by law, you will attract more of the negative. It is really that crazy simple ... just not always easy. Start paying attention and being curious about everything that shows up — your thoughts, people, phone calls, billboards, songs — and asking “why did I attract that into my life?” Check in to how it feels in the body, where you feel it and what emotion you would label it with. Let’s say it feels like frustration, then ask, “where else is frustration showing up?” Immediately you think about your teenager’s messy room which makes you feel the same feeling of frustration. Ask yourself why that situation is frustrating and work

with what comes to mind. Whether a reason is identified or not, see if that frustration could be replaced with something else, even something as simple as gratitude that you don’t have to sleep in that messy room. Now, every time that room is passed, shift to gratitude, then begin to pay attention to things that show up that you are grateful for. Our body and life create the perfect feedback to what we are “putting out there” at any given moment, allowing us to observe how we are doing. But, you have to begin by paying attention to everything. Every experience is coming to you, from you, for you, so even when the tough ones show up, try to muster a “gee, thanks, just what I asked for.” Puts it in a whole new perspective, doesn’t it? Beaufort High School presents ‘The Wiz’ By Lanier Laney
The four performing arts — drama, dance, band and chorus — offered at Beaufort High School have worked together to perform their first production, “The Wiz.” This musical was originally produced in 1974 starring Stephanie Mills, and is a way for the students to celebrate the 50th anniversary of civil rights. LaRaine Fess, Beaufort High School drama teacher and the director of “The Wiz,” said, “We wanted to include the community so Aunt Pearlie Sue (Anita Prather) is the Wicked Witch of the West.”
She added,“We also wanted to include students from other schools so we have 20 little ones playing Munchkins and Winkies.” They are from Coosa Elementary, Beaufort Elementary, Whale Branch Elementary, Mossy Oaks Elementary, Bridges Preparatory, Beaufort Middle, Lady’s Island Middle and St. Peter’s Catholic School. There are more than 100 students involved in the show and they have been rehearsing since January. “Our productions are student-run productions,” said LaRaine. “We have students as stage managers, lights, sound, prop master, run crew, costume,

makeup — you name it and a student is doing it or has done it.” The band, led by Mr. Nate Drake, is amazing! Teresa Baker is the musical director along with Jordan Norris. The lead roles — Dorothy, Tin
Man, Lion, Scarecrow, The Wiz, and Addepearl — are all drama IV students and they are also involved in the anti-bully program, “When You See Something Say Something.” LaRaine said, “The majority of the students who are leads are triple threats — they can sing, dance, act or sing act, and or play an instrument.” The show had a great opening last weekend. “The Wiz” will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22 in The Arts Center at Beaufort High. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for adults. It’s a super show, don’t miss it!
New golf tournament to raise money for brain cancer awareness The Randy Melvin Memorial Golf Tournament will be held in memory of Kelly Collins’ father, Randolph duBignon Melvin, who passed away from a Glioblastoma Brain Tumor on April 12, 2013. All of the money raised will go to brain cancer awareness. The tournament will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Cat Island Sanctuary Golf Club. It is a four man scramble and the entry fee is $100 per player. This fee includes golf, beer and wine and lunch. Kelly says, “We are accepting donations and checks can be made payable to the Randolph duBignon Melvin Memorial Fund, but we also can accept payment via credit card.” There will be a silent auction, raffle items and a cocktail party at 2 p.m. following the golf tournament to be held at the Cat Island clubhouse. There is a $25
fee and cash bar for non-golfers. Kelly said, “My dad was born in Waycross, Georgia, and moved to Beaufort when he was 8 years old. He was a graduate of Beaufort High and Belmont Abbey College. He served as a United States Secret Service agent for 28 years serving several presidents and foreign dignitaries. He also worked counterfeit and credit card fraud. He retired as the head of secret service for the state of South Carolina in Columbia to further his law enforcement career in Brunswick, Georgia, at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He permanently retired in 2010 and spent the majority of his time after retirement with his grandchildren or on the golf course.” A few facts about Glioblastoma Brain Tumors: • The median survival rate for patients diagnosed with GBM who are treated with chemotherapy and radiation is
14.6 months. Less than 30 percent of patients will survive two years and only 10 percent of patients will survive five years. • There is no known cause for Glioblastoma brain tumors. • The (GBM) tumors typically form and tend to make their presence known quickly. They grow rapidly and aggressively and even with removal via brain surgery they tend to grow back quickly and with a vengeance. • These tumors tend to increase with frequency of age and are more common in men than women but can even effect small children. It’s truly one of the great charitable success stories of our county. They literally pump every dollar raised into helping get troubled area youth on the path to success in life. And their good results have been astounding! The annual Croquet Picnic fundraiser that will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, on Bray’s Island is both beautiful and fun. Plus there is a special “Captain’s Party” event for supporters at Brantley Harvey’s historic Marshlands downtown on May 9. Co-chairs Mike Ingram and Dr. Mike Harris ask for a $50 spectator fee made out to AMIkids Beaufort (tax-deductible) for the croquet picnic. The entry fee for teams on May 10 is $400, and teams can range from four to more than eight members. Steve Mix: beaufort’s ‘mr. nice guy’

I was fortunate to have firsthand experience of Steve Mix’s kind heart by watching him in an emergency medical situation. He’s truly a Good Samaritan, and he and his wife Vicki have been great contributors to what is “Best about Beaufort.” It was an honor for me to do this interview. What do you do in Beaufort? Steve Mix works part time at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in the Rehabilitation Services Department, and also manages several real estate properties downtown. Where were you born and raised? “I was born in Chicago, but raised in Beverly, Mass.; Charlotte, NC; and even the small town of Bethune, SC. My wife and I lived in Rocky Mount, NC, before moving to Beaufort 21 years ago.” Who are your parents? “My parents are Joe and Lin Mix. Many people know my dad as he owned and worked at Island Outfitters on Lady’s Island. Many locals enjoyed coming to the store to buy hunting and fishing supplies, or just stopping in to talk about such. My mom could be found playing tennis down on the city courts while dad operated the store!” Where did you go to school? “I went to Duke University (Go Devils!) and graduated in 1980. My wife, Vicki, is a graduate of UNC-Wilmington.” Where did you meet your wife? “I have been very happily married since 1983 to the former Vicki Landing of Rocky Mount, NC. We met at an apartment complex, two doors from each other, when she was teaching school and I was working for Planters National Bank. My wife is currently not teaching, but is a teacher and media specialist and has taught Pre-K though the eighth grades.” What made you decide to move to Beaufort? “My parents moved here in 1976. I was entering college, so I never officially lived here until my wife and I moved here in 1993.” Do you have any children? “We have three children. Our oldest, Caroline, is married and practices law in Washington, DC. Our middle daughter, Gracyn, lives in NYC and is an actress. Our youngest is Austin Mix, a senior at Beaufort High School. All the children enjoyed growing up here in Beaufort and the two oldest come back as often as they can to visit.”

What other businesses have you worked for? Steve ran the Beaufort Butterfly Shop downtown for more than 17 years. He said,“I enjoyed all the locals and tourists who would stop by the shop. I have collected butterflies and moths since I was a young child, and although I don’t collect much anymore, I still speak to garden clubs and school groups on occasion about my hobby, and I remain a member of the Southern Lepidopterists Society.” What led to your current occupation? “Several years ago I decided it was time to close the Butterfly Shop. I have always enjoyed working with people and helping people out when I could. I decided to try out something new. I got my EMT license and found I enjoyed working with people with medical needs. I was fortunate enough that this has lead me to be currently working with the rehab department at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.” What do you like about your job and area of work? “I have always enjoyed working with people. I like making people laugh and feel good about life. Beaufort Memorial Hospital provides quality health care with a heavy dose of smiles. Many of our patients come back just to visit and some even bring food!” How would you describe your spouse? “Vicki is the rock of our family. She makes sure the kids work to their potential and has tried to teach them to think about people other than themselves. She is very involved with family and friends, and is quick with a laugh or a sympathetic ear. Vicki is a leader too, and very good with children in the classroom. Students
remember her teachings and personality through the years, often stopping her around town to catch her up on their lives.” How would your spouse describe you? Says his wife Vicki, “Steve is a wonderful person and lots of fun! He is well known in the community due to his fun-loving nature and his ability to wash dishes! He had a job in college as a dining hall dishwasher, and ever since then, he has washed the dishes at home and many a dinner party, too. We always laugh that we get invited to dinner parties due to his expertise at dish washing! He is also a great father and has been very involved in the children’s lives. When the girls were young, he started the father/daughter club “The Indian Princess’” through the YMCA. Steve’s Indian name was Chief Royal Walnut (after the Royal Walnut moth) but all the club members just called him ‘Chief Nut’ — he always liked that! If you need a smile or a favor, Steve is there to help you out. He is a great husband, father and friend.” What do you like most about Beaufortonians? “I think Beaufort is a very friendly place. I find that people living here are very accepting of newcomers.” What is one of your favorite hobbies? “Butterfly collecting! In the warmer months our house has Tupperware containers full of caterpillars munching on leaves.” (Now that is a new use for old Tupperware!) What charities or nonprofit organizations are you involved with? “I have been involved in leadership roles in the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, the Sea Island Rotary Club, AMIkids Beaufort, and First Presbyterian Church. My wife is a past board member with the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, and we have been actively involved with the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Valentine Ball, co-chairing and hosting dinner parties, and well as dancing on the dance floor each year!” What are your favorite sports? “I enjoy watching all sports, especially Duke basketball, and, as of this year, Duke football, too!” chairpersons of the duke symphony orchestra fundraiser

To be eligible for promotion, students were required to have at least a B in AFJROTC, and no failing grades in the rest of their classes. SCHOOL DISTRICT • The Beaufort County Board of Education today set Monday, March 24 as the make-up day for classes that were cancelled Jan. 29 due to a winter storm. March 24 was originally scheduled in the district’s calendar as a day when teachers would report for work for a staff development day but students would have a vacation day. Now both teachers and students will attend school at normal times on March 24. The team is led by returning coach Dianne Wilson. • The St. Peter’s boys middle school soccer team defeated Hilton Head Prep 5-0 in their first game of the season. BA’s Shamrock Shakedown always a successful event There were no black ties necessary at Beaufort Academy’s Shamrock Shakedown, held at Q on Bay on Saturday, March 15th, but there was a lot of green. Beaufort Academy’s spring fundraising event began in 1987, when it was originally named the “Pig Out in Frogmore” and held at Sanders Packing Shed to honor Mr. Pat Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun died suddenly of complications from surgery, and being greatly missed by his family as well as his community, they organized this event to raise money in his name. The original Pig Out was a sold out celebration that annually united a growing community for nearly 15 years. As with
the original, BA welcomes locals, alumni, friends and visitors every year to this fundraising social event. After a 10-year hiatus, in 2005 “Pig Out ... The Revival!” recreated the atmosphere from its predecessor while also making a name for itself. As in past Pig Outs, there was plenty of barbecue, an open bar, and dancing, all in a friendly, comfortable environment. The fundraising remained a big part of the event, but this time the funds went directly to BA, the 501c3 nonprofit independent PreK-12 school, to fill part of the void between tuition and the cost of running the school.
Blood drive to help educator diagnosed with leukemia Beaufort County School District is hosting a blood drive Tuesday, March 25, dedicated to Coosa Elementary media assistant Elaine Senn, who was diagnosed with leukemia in December. Senn, the mother of two teenage children, already has received four units of blood during her chemotherapy treatment. She will require even more blood and blood products following a stem cell transplant taking place Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina. The blood drive is being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Beaufort County School District office, 2900 Mink Point Blvd. in Beaufort To make an appointment, contact drive chairperson Megan Meyer at 843-322-2306. Before taking the media assistant position at Coosa Elementary, Senn served two years as assistant coach for the Beaufort High School girls’ varsity basketball team. The school held a blood drive for her earlier this month. “It’s been very hard on us,” said Senn’s husband Mark, who fought his own battle with brain cancer four years ago. “The support of the community helps us keep moving forward.”
In 2010, BA mixed it up a bit, changing the event to the Fish In, which also featured a fishing tournament, and then in 2012 to the Shamrock Shakedown, at which point it became Beaufort’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The purpose of each event, always under the direction of hardworking volunteer parents, continues to be a critical support of BA’s annual budget. Just as it was in the early years, volunteers still work hard to plan for it, the community still loves it, and the school’s operating budget still depends on it. Special thank you to this year’s co-chairs, Wendi Lynn and Tracy Hines.

Beaufort High’s Academic World Quest Challenge Team wins For the second year in a row, the Beaufort High’s Academic World Quest Challenge Team won the day. The Academic World Quest is a 10-round academic competition that tested the knowledge of District high school students on a wide range of global issues. Beaufort High’s “Green” team took first place, Hilton Head Island High’s “Columbia” team took second place and Bluffton High School’s “Black” team came in third. Teams from all five district high schools participated in the annual competition, and some schools Beaufort High’s “Green” team members, pictured above from left, are: Michael Schwartz, Ciaran Cordial, Austin Mix and Robert David Crumley, Jr. fielded two teams.
The World Affairs Council of Hilton Head, in partnership with the Beaufort County School District, presented the competition at Hilton Head Island High School. Parents of participating students, educators and community members were in the audience. Social Studies Department head Debi Kidd was the coach. “This competition is always so fierce,” Kidd said, “but we felt good coming in because we had worked so hard. And we’ve got a great bunch of kids.” The Beaufort High team will travel to Washington next month for a national competition.

Lady’s Island Elementary School held a vehicle career fair on Friday, March 14 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. There were 11 different careers from the community represented with 14 vehicles: Marines, Red Cross, EMS, police, Lady’s Island Fire Department, construction, tow trucks, Merry Maids, Happy Taxi, and a local crabber. The students had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers, ask questions, and begin to think about what they would like to do when they grow up. The classroom guidance curriculum, led by school counselor Kelli Harper, has been focusing on career readiness this month with the

River of Words sparks creativity through nature The complex ecology and peaceful beauty of Port Royal Sound serves as the inspiration for a new collection of art and poetry by Beaufort County School District students. “River of Words: Musings on Port Royal Sound through Poetry and Art 2014,” was unveiled last Friday evening at a reception at ARTworks in Beaufort. The student publication is the culmination of an interdisciplinary learning experience about the sound’s watersheds. “When children spend more time indoors and on line than outdoors, there’s a legitimate concern that viewing nature only ‘virtually’ will lead to a diminished awareness of our local ecology and our ‘sense of place’ in the larger scheme of things,” said Margaret Rushton, the project coordinator. “This helps to counteract that trend.” Rushton said that more than 3,400 second- through 12th-graders from 25 district schools accepted the “River of Words” challenge last fall to extend learning beyond classroom walls and into neighboring marshes, beaches and maritime forests. More than 100 science, English language arts, math, gifted and talented and visual arts teachers joined
forces to design interdisciplinary units of study that examined local watersheds from multiple perspectives. Students and teachers equipped with binoculars, cameras and sketchbooks experienced first-hand the intricacies of Port Royal Sound. They tested water quality, studied stormwater run-off and discussed the effects of pollution and population growth. They kayaked the May River, rode in a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources “Discovery Vessel,” witnessed abundant wildlife at Nemours Plantation, toured Hunting Island State Park and explored the natural history and cultural heritage of the Lowcountry at Coastal Discovery Museum. Rushton said that while students observed, measured, tested, researched and documented, they also heightened their senses to the sights, sounds and smells of the natural world. Following these scientific discoveries, she said, students were charged to transform their new knowledge into poems and art. “River of Words” is filled with their creativity. Now in its fourth year, “River of Words” enables K-12 students to use humor and haiku, free verse, figurative language,
vivid vocabularies and heartfelt advocacy along with paint, pencil, digital images and natural fibers to demonstrate their understanding of Port Royal Sound and to make their voices heard. Participating schools this year were: Battery Creek High, Beaufort Elementary, Beaufort Middle, Bluffton Elementary, Bluffton High, Bluffton Middle, Broad River Elementary, Coosa Elementary, H.E McCracken Middle, Hilton Head Island Elementary, Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts, Hilton Head Island Middle, J. Shanklin Elementary, Lady’s Island Elementary, Lady’s Island Middle, Mossy Oaks Elementary, Okatie Elementary, Pritchardville Elementary, Port Royal Elementary, Red Cedar Elementary, Riverview Charter, Robert Smalls Middle, St. Helena Elementary, Whale Branch Elementary and Whale Branch Middle. Participating environmental groups were: LowCountry Institute, Coastal Discovery Museum, Hunting Island State Park, Waddell Mariculture Center, Beaufort County Soil and Water Conservation District, Clemson Extension Center, Center for Birds of Prey,
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Outside Hilton Head, Kids in Kayaks and Nemours Plantation. On behalf of all the students that benefit from this experience, Rushton gives special thanks to the Port Royal Sound Foundation for their Benefactor funding and to the Instructional Services staff at the Beaufort County School District for the team effort it takes to organize the River of Words program each of the four years. Donor challenges community to support Holy Trinity Classical Christian School An anonymous donor is challenging Holy Trinity Classical Christian School of Beaufort and its surrounding community to raise $750,000 by September 1, 2014. If the challenge is met in full and all monies are deposited by September 1, the donor has agreed to provide a matching gift of $750,000. The purpose of the challenge is to
create a long-term fund that will provide tuition assistance based upon a student’s financial need. Should the monetary goal be reached, the donor’s name will be released to the public. Headmaster Reverend Chad Lawrence stated, “This is both a tremendous gift and challenge to us. Being able to raise the necessary funds to receive this generous
matching gift will mean that many students whose families could not otherwise afford it will be able to receive the first-class Classical Christian education that we have to offer. beaufort yacht and sailing club sponsors jean ribaut cup/beaufort race weekend The Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is sponsoring the Jean Ribaut Cup/Beaufort Race Weekend again this year. The weekend starts on Friday, March 28 and continues through Monday, March 31. There will be a full weekend of racing for PHRF sailing boats as well as social events for the crews, their guests and club members. The main event is the Jean Ribaut Cup which will be sailed on Port Royal Sound on Saturday, March 29; at least 20 boats are expected to sail in this popular regatta. Beaufort High’s Amanda Barnes sets national pole vault mark Beaufort High School is home to the nation’s top female high school sophomore pole vaulter. Beaufort sophomore Amanda Barnes delivered her top mark in the 50th Annual Bob Hayes Invitational at Raines High School in Jacksonville, Fla., last weekend as she reached a winning height of 12 feet, 9 inches. Her effort broke a seven-year-old meet record and gave her the top effort over other 10th graders nationally. The Beaufort High School track and field program
enjoyed some other highlights in the meet. The Beaufort girls 4x100 relay team, consisting of Tatyana Fripp, Bre-Anne Heyward-White, Savionna Glover and Aaliyah Smalls, finished in 49.8 seconds. For the Beaufort boys track and field team, Michael Dickson finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles. Dickson turned in a stellar time of 14.6 seconds. The Beaufort High boys’ 4x400 team finished in 3:37.
Dolphins split doubleheader Battery Creek split a high school baseball doubleheader with Tamaqua, a team from Pennsylvania, last Saturday. In the first game, visiting Tamaqua pulled away to best Battery Creek 12-1. The Dolphins, however, battled back to win the nightcap, edging Tamaqua 5-4 in the final game of the twinbill. With the win in the second game, Battery Creek improved to 2-4. More on each game follows. Tamaqua 12, Battery Creek 1: Battery Creek struggled offensively throughout the opening game of the doubleheader versus Tamaqua as the visiting team from Pennsylvania pulled away to 12-1. Clyde Parker and Craig Capano each had one hit for Battery Creek in the loss. Parker scored Battery Creek’s lone run and Capano delivered the Dolphins’ only RBI. Battery Creek 5, Tamaqua 4: Battery Creek starting pitcher Zach Mahan tossed a complete game and earned the win in the second game. The productive Mahan allowed only two earned runs on seven hits. Reliable Beaufort batter Clyde Parker accounted for the game-winning hit. Helping his cause at the plate, Mahan went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Mahan was one of three Battery Creek batters to turn in multi-hit games. The second game’s most consistent hitter, Henry Schubert was 3-for-4 for the Dolphins. Craig Capano finished 2-for-3 with a double in Battery Creek’s hard-fought win.

With the win, Beaufort Academy improved to 3-2. Jack Olsson, Drummond Koppernaes and Jacob Dalton all scored goals while George Sanford and Joe Bhoi delivered one assist apiece for the win. Defensively, Beaufort Academy goalkeeper Ashton Guest posted his second straight shutout.

Boys: Battery Creek 11, Garrett Tech 0: Four different Battery Creek players provided scoring in the shutout win. Leading Battery Creek offensively, Caleb Campbell, Kale Slade and Reece Bowles scored three goals apiece while John Saullo scored two goals for Battery Creek in the convincing victory. Duke Symphony Orchestra returns to Beaufort Concert to benefit healing arts at Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Keyserling Cancer Center For the 11th consecutive year, the Duke Symphony Orchestra is taking its show on the road to raise money for Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Keyserling Cancer Center and its Healing Arts program. Some 60 musicians from the North Carolina university will travel to Beaufort to perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. this Saturday, March 22 at USCB’s Center for the Arts. “Everybody loves this trip,” said Duke Symphony Orchestra Director Harry Davidson. “The only students who miss this concert are seniors who have job interviews.” Each year, the community rolls out the red carpet for the young musicians. The students stay in the homes of area residents and are invited to a postconcert conductor’s reception held in a private residence in the city’s Landmark Historic District. “The first year we presented the concert, the audience gave the orchestra a spontaneous standing ovation after the opening number,” said Alice Moss, executive director of the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, which organizes the fundraiser. “They’ve been a hit every year since.” To date, the popular concert has

raised more than $205,000 for the foundation. Proceeds from the event benefit Beaufort Memorial’s cancer center and its Healing Arts programs, designed to create an inviting, relaxed environment meant to calm patients and relieve their stress. Steve and Vicki Mix are the honorary chairs of the 2014 event. The Beaufort residents — longtime supporters of the BMH Foundation — have played host
to Duke orchestra members year after year. Most of the musicians are undergraduate or graduate students studying everything from engineering to medicine. Duke’s Department of Music does not offer music performance majors. “These are kids who played in their high school bands and have been taking lessons for years,” Davidson said. “They perform with the orchestra because they want to keep music in their lives.” During the two-hour concert, the students will play a repertoire of 18th to 20th century symphonic classical works. The USCB University Chorus will make
a guest appearance, joining the orchestra on two of the evening’s selections. “It’s a big thrill for the students,” said USCB Choral Director Vic Varner. “It’s not often they get to perform with a full symphony orchestra.” General admission tickets to the performance are $35. Patron tickets are $75 and include premium seating and the conductor’s reception being held a few blocks from the concert hall at the home of Frances and David Cherry. The design is sleek and inviting, with a long bar, small tables and interesting art on the walls. Last Friday afternoon, we were treated to three amazing courses expertly prepared by Chef Tara. For the first appetizer course, she brought us a platter called Meta’ y Medio, which is the cheese plate and Charcuterie Board combined. We also loved the little plate of goat cheese stuffed dates wrapped in speck. For the second course, we sampled three of their specialty sandwiches, and they were all excellent. Follow the yellow glass bottle By Celia Strong
It may not be the “Yellow Brick Road,” but the theory is close. You may not remember the name of this wine, but you will remember the shape of the bottle and the color of the yellow glass, and that should be enough to help find it so you can buy some. Our winery this week is known for having different shaped bottles. I’m not sure if it was a marketing decision to make it easier to find their wines, but since most wineries spend time and money on designing labels and thinking of memorable names, then it seems logical that they planned for exactly that to happen. You can imagine the brainstorming session: “Why not just make it easy? A different bottle. A distinctive color. Then customers can just ask for the white wine in the bright yellow bottle.” Very clever. Our wine, in its yellow glass bottle, comes from northwestern Italy, specifically the Piedmont region. Located in the foothills of the Alps, this region shares borders with both France and Switzerland. Like most of the 20 wine regions of Italy, Piedmont has native vines. The ancient Greeks called the area “Oenotrua,” land of vines. There are many well known wines that come from Piedmont — Barolo and Barbaresco, made from Nebbiolo grapes; Dolcettos and Barberas, both red grapes; Asti Spumante, made from Moscato grapes; Brachettos, red wines that are sweet and sparkling; and, last but not least, Gavi, a white wine made from Cortese grapes. For many years, before the white wines from northeastern Italy became numerous and popular, the white wines of Gavi were considered to be the best of Italian dry white wines. (Hopefully, after this week, some of us can think this is true.) Only about 30 percent of Piedmont land is suitable for grape planting. Despite that, the region has 42 DOC wines and 16 DOCGs. The Piedmont region produces more DOC/ DOCG wines by volume than any other Italian region. Almost 84 percent of their wines are DOC/DOCGs. Our wine is the white Gavi.

This week’s wine is a Gavi white wine made from the Cortese grape in the Italian Piedmont region. It comes in a very unique shaped bottle made with bright yellow glass from the Villa Sparina winery. Geographically, Gavi is a commune, or municipality, in the Piedmont Province of Allessandria. It is located about 62 miles southeast of Turin, the region’s capital. The area of Gavi was settled in Neolithic times, and, later, was most likely a Roman military outpost. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Gavi was captured by the Magyars and then the Saracens. The name “Gavi” supposedly comes from the name of a Saracen princess, Gavia or Gavina, who lived in a castle where the commune is located. (There is a legend about this princess. She fell deeply in love with one of her guards, but was told by her father, Clodimir, King of the Franks, that she could not marry beneath her class. The two lovers ran away, across the Alps into nearby Italy and, for a while, avoided capture by the King’s troops. But, one night, having drunk too much of the local wine, the young husband talked too much and the King’s men found them. But, their deep love for each other so impressed the King when he came to get them, that he forgave them, blessed their marriage and gave his daughter the town where they had been hiding. And Gavi was established. And the white wine of the town was made famous.) During the Middle Ages, Gavi was

controlled by the Marquisses of Gavi, and, in 1202, it was sold to Genoa. During the First Genoese-Savoyard War, Gavi was attacked and fell under the control of French-Savoy troops for only 21 days. The Genoese took it back that quickly and decided to turn it into a fortress, building around the original castle. Eventually, the fortress became a penitentiary, and, later, a POW camp during World War II. Not much of the legend of poor Princess Gavia left. Gavi white wine is made from the Cortese grape. (There are other varieties grown in Gavi, including Garganega, Grenache, Barbera and Pinot Noir.) Besides in Gavi, small amounts of Cortese are also grown in the town of Asti. There is written documentation of this variety being planted in Piedmont vineyards in 1659. In 1870, ampelographers (grape studiers) P.P. DeMaria and Carlo Leardi noted that Cortese was widely planted in the Allessandria Province of Piedmont and that the variety was hardy and resistant to grape diseases, produced large crop yields and high quality wines. The grape has moderate acidity and light flavors. These wines are medium bodied with lime and other green fruit flavors. In cooler vintages, when the wines can be a bit overly acidic,
malolactic fermentation and some barrel aging can temper the aggressive acidity. Gavi wine is a favorite in nearby Genoa restaurants where it pairs well with local seafood. Cortese grapes make a couple of DOC wines and the Cortese di Gavi, the official name of this wine, a DOCG declared wine since 1998. These wines can come from 11 communes around Gavi, but wines made just from grapes grown in Gavi can be called Gavi di Gavi. Gavi wines made today are the same style as they were as long ago as 1876. Why mess with a good thing? And, finally, we get to our Gavi from the winery Villa Sparina. The winery was, in the 18th century, a farming estate built by the Marquis Franzoni of Genova. Like many successful Old World wineries, Sparina honors their past and traditions while also looking for innovations to move them, and future generations, forward. Villa Sparina owns about 250 acres, about 170 of them planted with indigenous Cortese and Barbera grapes. Their wines are known for their fresh flavors, balanced structure, harmony and recognizable flavors of their “terroire.” For our wine, in its yellow glass bottle with the funny shape, Villa Sparina grows the Cortese grapes in chalky, clay soil, in vineyards that are 800 to 1,000 feet above sea level. The vines are about 26 years old. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel, over three weeks, and malolactic fermentation is done to some of the wine. The wine is aged in its unique yellow bottle for three months. This Gavi is a pale, straw golden yellow color. It has floral aromas with hints of peaches. Then, there are pear and lemon flavors with good minerality — all full and rich flavors. I guess it should go well with seafood. So, our wine this week includes a legend of true love and a princess, and is made from a grape that we have never discussed before. It also has new, interesting flavors, just in time for the seafood we eat all summer. Orval Franklin (Dickie) Carr, 64, of Yemassee, SC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at his residence. The family received friends on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors, a reception followed at AmVets in Port Royal, SC. Mr. Carr was born on August 7, 1949 in Ward, West Virginia. He is the son of the late Luther Carr and Roberta Bostick Carr. Dickie served our country in the USMC, where he retired. He was a life member of the VFW and AmVets. Surviving are two sisters, Kay Purvis of Beaufort, SC and Ruby McConnell of Ohio; two brothers, Tommy and Sam Carr, both of Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 702 Battery Creek Road, Beaufort, SC 29902. Loring Charles Covington
Loring Charles Covington passed away on March 11, 2014 at age 81. He was born in Savannah, GA on August 24, 1932, and moved to Beaufort, SC, where he attended Beaufort schools. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, with a double major. Charles received his MBA from the University of Wisconsin and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society. He was employed by Kimberly-Clark Corporation for 29 years and retired as the Director of Administration in Roswell, GA. Charles served in the U.S. Air Force for four years as a pilot with the rank of captain. He was a member of Mt. Paran North Church of God where he was an Elder and Elder Emeritus as well as a member of the Missions Board for over 20 years. Charles was a member of the International Water Lily and Water Garden Society and also served as administrative manager; he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Capt. John Collins Chapter, The Huguenot Society of South Carolina and the Cobb County Community Emergency Response Team (CERTS). He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Ann; son, David Covington of Rockmart, Georgia; daughter, Leigh Ann Jenkins; son-in-law, Chris Jenkins; and three grandsons: David, twins Nathan and Ryan Jenkins of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. A graveside service was held at St.
Helena Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014. Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
Nils Dahl
Nils J. Dahl, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, age 84, died peacefully March 11, 2014 with his family by his side after a brief period of declining health. Born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, he graduated from Brooklyn Prep (’47) and Georgetown University (’51) and then honorably served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp. He began his career as a salesman with Celanese Corporation before joining Crystal Thermoplastics in Cumberland, Rhode Island where he was president and co-owner. He was known in his industry for his wit, good humor and fair dealings. A banker once commented to his son, “your dad is a pain to deal with, but he’s also one of our favorite clients.” Nils loved sports and was an avid tennis, paddle tennis and golfer in Barrington, R.I., where he made a holein-one on each of the par three’s at RICC. After 37 years in Rhode Island he made golf his passion while living in the South Carolina Lowcountry for another 18 years. While they gave it their best efforts, none of his children were ever able to beat Nils at tennis or golf. Nils was a devoted husband of 59 wonderful years to Joan Flaherty Dahl and loving father to five children: Gregory Dahl (Halina) of Wilbraham, MA; Patricia Dahl of New York, NY; John Dahl (Kimberly) of Spring, TX; Norena Howard (Terrence) of Fairfield, CT and Nils Dahl (Christine) of Southport, CT; nine grandchildren: Stacie Routt (Travis), JoDe Hollis (Cory), Nils Dahl, Nathan Dahl, Catherine Howard, Joseph Dahl, Matthew Howard, Gabrielle Howard and Carolyn “Andie” Dahl. Family was everything to Nils; he was also the doting younger brother to his beloved sisters, Kathyleen “Kay” O’Leary and Norena “Cissie” Dahl who preceded him, and Norma “Nonie” Melvin of Southbury, CT who survives him, as well as his 13 nephews and nieces. He will be remembered by all for his boisterous laugh and his witty storytelling. A memorial mass was celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Lady’s Island. Frances Woods Montcalm, 88, of St. Helena Island, SC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at her nephew’s residence. Mrs. Montcalm was born on August 20, 1925, on McTeer Farms in Grays Hill, SC. She is the daughter of the late Henry M. Woods and Elsie W. Woods. She was a member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort. After graduating Beaufort High School in 1942, she worked at the Taylor Shop on Parris Island. She also worked at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC as a welder. She managed her father’s store, Woods Grocery on St. Helena Island for 25 years, now known as Boonedocks Restaurant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Montcalm and her baby sister, Fostine Gay. Surviving are three sisters, Gloria W. Lightsey of Beaufort, SC; Doris W. Small Gainesville, GA and Maxine W. Griffin

Lottie Carolyn Summerall
Lottie Carolyn Summerall, 86, of St. Helena Island, SC, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, February 23, 2014 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Carolyn was born at home to John Austin Jones and Sallie Sue Hayes Jones on September 24, 1927 in Lewisburg, Tenn. and was raised in Lewisburg and Tullahoma, Tenn. On February 17, 1945 she married Odis Crawford Summerall in Beaufort, SC and she worked for many years for the S.C Forestry Commission, retiring in 1972. Carolyn was also an accomplished homemaker, seamstress, cook and gardener and she never met a dog or cat that she didn’t love. In her last years she very much enjoyed watching the birds on the feeders outside of her sun room. She was preceded in death by her husband Odis in 1977, her brother Carl Allen Jones in 1989, her sister Flora Sue Lankas in 2003 and her sister Catherine Leona Collins in 2004. Carolyn is survived by three sons, David B. Summerall (Linda) of Frogmore, SC, John C. Summerall (Sharon) of Okatie, SC, and Timothy A. Summerall of Beaufort; three daughters: Cathleen S. Murphy (Frank) of Beaufort, Susan C. Summerall of Beaufort, and Barbara S. Fraley (Dennis) of Lake City, SC; a niece, Carmelita J. Hair ( J.A.) of John’s Island, SC; and a nephew, William G. Lankas (Carolyn) of Sneads Ferry, NC. When we watch a litter of puppies play we can be convinced that play is a natural behavior. But I’m sure you’ve met some dogs that don’t play well or that don’t seem interested play at all. How can this be? For starters, dog-dog play is different than dog-human play. While puppies naturally know how to play with other puppies, they have to learn how to play with their people as a part of their socialization. Dogs that don’t have this opportunity in their critical formative weeks may not have any idea how to engage their humans in play, and play is one of the elements that strengthen the dog-human bond. As odd as it may sound, the dogs that do not learn how to play with their people are often the same ones that end up in shelters because the social contract — the one that says a dog deserves a lifelong loving home — has been broken, usually by his human. Unfortunately, some people have a severely limited idea of what constitutes dog play. If your dog won’t fetch the ball, you might think your dog doesn’t know how to do the dog thing. How many of us have thrown the ball for our Best Friend to have him turn around with a condescending look of “What!?”. While Tucker, my lab, would retrieve until the moon came out, his housemate Bea would give me her version of “nice throw” and walk away. She preferred a

touch-and-run game we called Scream the Beagle. Many dogs love running games, chasing games, digging activities and tug-play. But don’t stop there. Everyone has fun teaching dogs tricks and the list is endless: Roll Over, Take a Bow, Say Your Prayers or the Commando Crawl. My dad taught all of our dogs “Wait For It” with tiny pieces of kielbasa balanced on their noses. If your dog won’t play one game with you, change your approach. Certainly, Scream the Beagle was not a game I learned about in a book. It developed over time by responding appropriately to cues from the Bea. If you’re patient, understanding and willing to look a bit foolish, you can help your play-deprived dog learn how to get in some kind of game. Here are some mistakes we might make in trying to convince a party-poop dog to play: • Too much intensity — pressure to perform turns the dog off. • Shoving a toy at his face to get him
to play with it. • Becoming too excited, and frightening the dog just as he begins to show interest. • Giving up on the dog. If he declines to participate, try another and another until you find a game he likes. • Failing to recognize and reinforce inbred play behavior, such as the bounce in his step, flip of the head, the play bow, a momentary reaching for a toy, or reach with a paw. • Relying on food as the only reward in learning how to play. A reinforcer is anything your dog wants — a squeak, a run, or your attention. • Not ending the session soon enough. You want to leave your dog wanting more! Some activities aren’t appropriate for particular dogs because the games are
too arousing, physically risky, or they reinforce inappropriate behaviors. If you don’t allow your dog on the furniture, or if he is low to the ground (think daschund), then jumping on and off the couch is not a good idea. Some humans insist on playing inappropriately, and it’s your job as your dog’s protector to prevent them from having access to your Best Friend. If your brother-in-law’s idea of dog-play is to encourage play biting or body slamming, then you have to step in. Plus, you can’t expect your dog to play with humans he doesn’t care for. If he dislikes children or is frightened by men with beards, it’s unfair to expect him to play with the Abe Lincoln look-alike next door. Play is not something a dog outgrows but rather an activity keenly pursued throughout their lives. Unhealthy and unhappy dogs do not play, so play serves as a barometer of well being, indicating that a dog is well fed, in good health, and content. Like humans, dogs do not play when they’re sad or distressed. If they simply do not enjoy playing anything, they should be carefully scrutinized to make sure all is well in their lives. Who should play? Everyone.

United Hospice holding Camp Cocoon for kids
The United Hospice Foundation is hosting a Children’s Bereavement, Camp Cocoon of Coastal South. Camp Cocoon is for any child ages 7-17 who has experienced the heartache of a loved one’s death. Golf tourney benefits search and rescue squads
Beaufort Water Search and Rescue and Fripp Island Sea Rescue will have their 11th Annual St. Patty’s Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 22 at Ocean Creek Golf Course, Fripp Island. This is the only fundraiser for the non-profit, all-volunteer rescue squads that work with local, state and federal emergency agencies to coordinate quick responses at all hours of the day and night. In a typical year, a combined 80 volunteers respond to 150 to 200 callouts and expend 3,000 to 3,500 man hours. The rescue squads are seeking hole sponsors, personal sponsors, teams and donations of prizes and silent auction items. Registration for the tournament begins at 9 a.m., and the start is 10 a.m. It is a four-person, captain’s choice format and $75 per player. The fee includes the tournament fee, cart, range balls, prizes and lunch. Hole-in-one prizes are a new boat donated by Barrier Island Marine and a golf cart by E-ZGO. New archaeology group organizing in Beaufort
The Archaeology Society of South Carolina Beaufort continues its organization path. Because there are many people north of the Broad River who are interested in archaeology, there will be a meeting, Monday, March 24 in the Children’s Programming Room at the Beaufort library on Scott Street at noon. Guest speaker will be Dr. Eric Poplin, Senior Archaeologist of Brockington and Associates, SC. His talk will include

Thursday, March 20, the Collaborative Organization for Services for Youth (COSY) will conduct their monthly training from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the USCB Center for the Arts Auditorium on Carteret Street, Beaufort. Port Royal to hold 11th annual Soft Shell Crab Festival The 11th annual Soft Shell Crab Festival is scheduled for April 19, 2014, from noon to 5 p.m., along Paris Avenue in Port Royal, SC. Free admission. Spring is the time for soft shell crabs and the Old Village in Port Royal is the place to get them in any form imaginable. The opportunity for soft shell crab is quick. It only comes once a year and the 11th annual Soft Shell Crab Festival is the chance to savor these delicacies. Local restaurants will serve up varieties of soft shell crab in
clever variations. If crab isn’t your thing, barbecue, burgers, ice cream, other seafood and more also will be available. Organizers expect food vendors, artists and crafters lined up on Paris Avenue. Children’s activities, live music and entertainment for individuals of all ages. Once again, a classic car show will feature dozens of old-school vehicles. The festival will also feature the annual crab race where approximately 5,000 rubber crabs are “adopted”

candidates in the primary to represent the Republican Party in his first return to politics since he resigned as governor in 2009. He previously served as the First Congressional District representative from 1995-2001. Sanford grew up in Beaufort and his family still lives in the area.
