The World Trade Towers come to Beaufort via Carpet One

Creative Interiors Carpet One was honored with a visit from Jack Oehm, Battalion Commander, FDNY (Ret.), who is a board member of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Commander Oehm provided the guests with an update on the Building for America’s Bravest program which builds hi-tech “smart homes” for service members returning from war who have been catastrophically injured. Carpet One, and its manufacturing partner Mohawk, have committed to providing flooring materials and installation for 46 of these “smart homes.” Will Dukes, owner of Carpet One, said “We are so very proud to support this worthy cause and we’re delighted to give them a check on behalf of our staff and clients.” As a “thank you” for their efforts, Creative Interiors Carpet One was given a small piece of one of the main girders from the World Trade Center towers housed in a shadow box. owCountry Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce the dedication of our 43th home located in the Mint Farm neighborhood to the Adderley Family. Alisha Adderley, a hardworking single mother of seven, is finally realizing the dream of home ownership. In 2011, she applied for the Habitat Homeownership Program and was overjoyed when she was accepted into the program. After completing over 400 hours of Sweat Equity, the Adderley family is ready to begin building a bright future in their new home. They couldn’t be happier to own a safe, decent affordable home and take pride in the work they

accomplished to get to this point. LowCountry Habitat congratulates the Adderley family on this huge accomplishment and wishes them the best of luck as they turn one dream after another into a reality. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety and that decent shelter

in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Habitat ReStores were developed to provide Habitat affiliates with another income stream for building houses while providing a place where still useful building materials and supplies can be recycled and gentlyused home furnishings can be resold to new owners reducing the burden on local landfills.

A day for Penn – a day for giving By Monica Tanouye

Tucked away on Saint Helena Island lies the site of Penn School, one of the nation’s first learning centers for formerly enslaved West Africans, and the organization that calls it home today, The Penn Center. Dedicated to promoting and preserving the history and culture of the Sea Islands, Penn Center’s busy and successful year has led them to start the first annual “A Day For Penn”, a Giving Tuesday (Tuesday, December 1st) campaign. 2015 marks 153 years since the Penn School was founded. This year, the organization has saved 115 acres of heirs’ property, helping local AfricanAmericans keep their land and their homes, and hired a new executive director, Dr. Rodell Lawrence. However, it was Lowcountry Giving Day in May that encouraged Penn Center to kickstart Day For Penn. Victoria Smalls, the organization’s new Director of Development and Marketing, explained

Beyond fundraising for Penn Center, “A Day For Penn” will include a volunteer breakfast and an evening reception with live music by Mahoganee Amiger plus art on display from Saundra Renee Smith, among others. The reception will take place at the York W. Bailey Museum from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1st.

It’s a pain we can do without By Dr. Stephen W. Durham

Waking up with a headache or a sore jaw might be the only signal we get of Bruxism – that’s the medical term for clenching or grinding your teeth. Most everyone does it from time to time, often in our sleep. But when grinding or clenching goes on consistently it can wear down your teeth, even fracture or loosen them. There are effective treatments, but the hardest part seems to be finding out that the problem exists. Your dentist can help. Signs of unusual wear show up when your teeth are examined, and that’s not unusual. Deciding to deal with it is the important thing. Many Causes, Many Masks A poor bite alignment, crooked or missing teeth, stress or anxiety – even sleep disorders can lead to Bruxism. When the clenching and grinding start, it’s important to interrupt that cycle, the sooner the better. Often people just don’t get to it because those feelings in the jaw, that headache, just seem normal. Even clenching and grinding during wakeful

hours can be easy to overlook, blending in with our everyday experience. Simple Solutions, and Lots of Them Ways to address Bruxim range from a simple mouth guard to a custom-fit orthotic that rests the jaw in your own perfect alignment. With computer imaging, qualified dentists can determine the unique position that relaxes your jaw and the powerful muscles around it. There’s still some art to the perfect solution, but the guesswork has been replaced by science. The answer may be much easier than you imagine. The first step to a more comfortable jaw, a lighter expression, and pain-free days and nights can start with a conversation at your dentist’s office. You’ll be glad you made the time.

Dental occlusion refers to the way your teeth meet when you bite together. Optimally, all your teeth should come in contact with one another at about the same time and with equal force. When this does not happen, your occlusion is unbalanced and problems may result. Some of the problems that may result from poor occlusion include:

We use a simple occlusal exam and scan that is very easy and painless. It gives us the information we need to easily determine and restore the perfect balance of your bite. You simply bite down on a thin sensor and the software displays the timing of contacts and levels of force in a dynamic movie. It will show your bite from beginning to end and all that is happening in between. This will allow us to immediately visualize problem areas before you leave the office that day.

What to know about co-signing a loan Provided by State Farm

Your friend or family member wants to take out a loan — but they don’t qualify. They could, however, if someone co-signs, so they ask you. Before you jump in to help, understand how the decision potentially impacts your credit. Consider the following carefully. What Happens When You Co-sign There are potential risks when co-signing a loan. You are 100% responsible for the debt. When you cosign, you agree to pay the loan back in full — plus any late fees or collection costs — if the primary borrower

defaults or misses just one payment. If you can’t pay, the lender could sue you or garnish your wages. It can lower your credit score. The primary borrower’s late or missed payments can prevent you from qualifying for personal loans or other lines of credit in the future. Before Co-signing: Factors to Consider Think about the following before agreeing to co-sign a loan. Is the borrower able to make payments on time? If the primary borrower doesn’t have a steady source of income, making on-time payments may become an issue. How can you protect your credit? Ask the

borrower to make any missed payments within 30 days to ensure your credit score (theirs, too) doesn’t take a hit. Your Investment Is Key If you’re comfortable co-signing a loan, treat the debt like it’s your own. Set a timeline. Agree on a specific date to get your name off the account. To do this, the primary borrower must refinance the loan or close the credit card. Monitor the account. Review online statements to make sure the primary borrower is regularly making payments.

BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce encourages you to Dine, Shop, Spend Local on Small Business Saturday, November 28, and throughout the holiday season.

Congratulations to this week’s Chamber Business of the Week - BeaufortPics (Located at 910 Port Republic Street in Beaufort)! Each week, the Chamber highlights one member business or organization as a thank you for their investment in the Chamber and our community. Special thanks to K’s Party Store for sponsoring Business of the Week!

Waiting for normal These are not normal times investors are living in. The Fed has held short-term interest rates at zero for six years now, a policy experiment never seen before. This has many investors eager to see what happens if and when this returns to “normal.” One of the biggest psychological challenges of investing is that there is always something out of the norm. I wonder at what point somebody would have described the times as normal. Take a look at the table below which highlights different periods in which investors had to live through and the extreme performances that accompanied them: Understanding how different it always is should be a great reminder why no strategy will work in all market environments. Knowing the limitations to what you are doing- whatever you’re doing- is critical. The ability to stick with your plan during the bad times will determine if you’ll be around for the good ones. So what is an investor to do? I see a couple options: 1. Employ some form of static asset allocation and hope for the best. 25% fixed income, 25% US Equity, 25% International Equity, and 25% Alternatives and rebalance annually. 2. Employ some type of forecasting to try to be opportunistic in asset

class exposure 3. Employ some form of trend-following tactical approach to asset allocation The static allocation approach may ultimately perform Charles okay over long peTumlin riods of time, but will investors have the risk tolerance to continue with long stretches of an asset class being out of favor / going through severe drawdowns? Maybe? Maybe not. Chances are the forecasting approach will end very badly, as forecasting usually does. The third option makes much more sense to me. Simply systematically deal with trends as they unfold. This is the approach we use with our Global Macro separately managed account, which happens to be our most popular SMA strategy. Thank goodness we gave ourselves as much flexibility as we did with the way that this portfolio is constructed because this decade has been entirely different than the last decade. As one example, consider how well commodities performed in the last decade compared to the train wreck that they have been so far this decade. Normal doesn’t exist. A disciplined way to be flexible is the key to successfully navigating the ever-changing

financial landscape. **This article was written by Dorsey Wright and Associates, Inc., and provided to you by Charles Tumlin, Managing Director, TLS Wealth Management of Raymond James. Finally. We have hit the big time with Vinas 3! By Celia Strong Yes. Finally. We have hit the big time. But, I’m jumping ahead. So, to begin with, you have accomplished one holiday dinner. (Or, if you read this just before Thanksgiving, you’ve almost accomplished one.) Hopefully everyone had a great Thanksgiving! But that leaves us two to go. And not just two big and very special meals, but also a season of gift giving. Lots of eating and drinking and gifting. If we do it all well, it’s a big deal. If we don’t get everything done in time, it’s a big deal. If we do or don’t find the right menu, the right time, the right gifts, blah blah blah. Stress, stress, stress. Maybe, though, our wine today can be a help. Lesson time! Our grape variety this week is Pinot Noir. This grape is grown in every wine producing country around the world. Ours, today, is from California, so we’ll review some of what we’ve learned before? Even though it makes some of the world’s greatest red wines, Pinot Noir is difficult to grow. Its berries (grapes) are tightly packed together in their bunches on their vines. This makes it an easy target for vineyard hazards like rot. Also, Pinot Noir grapes have thin skins and low levels of phenolic compounds. (No big deal. Phenolic compounds and polyphenols just affect the color, flavor and texture of wines.) Pinot Noir winemakers always have to struggle against wines that are

lightly colored, light or medium bodied, low in tannins, susceptible to dumb phases, and may or may not age well. Because of all this, many California Pinot producers have had to choose to blend in percentages of Merlot, Syrah and other varieties in order to make more drinkable wines. Many of these blended wines can still be labeled “Pinot Noir,” as long as Pinot makes up at least 75% of the wine. And we continually drink many of them. Without knowing. When grown in California, Pinot Noir has found success in many areas Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley, Napa County, Santa Barbara AVA and more. With many different styles that range from cool, minerally and pungent like red Burgundy wines to super ripe, soft and chocolatey sweet made from grapes that are very ripe with high sugar levels. Two different styles, but the one you love you first Pinot Noir from is the style you prefer. And, here, we have another reason for California producers tend to blend their Pinot

Noir wines. Not with other varieties, but with different styles of Pinot grapes. The results being very good and very complex wines. Nice! Row Eleven Wine Company makes our Pinot Noir for this week. Founded in 2004, this company makes wines under several different brand names. Row Eleven is one. Their Pinot Noir grapes, for our wine, come from special vineyards in three appellations. All the grapes are sustainably grown, and each bringing its own particular characteristics to the

wine. Our wine, Row Eleven Vinas 3, is a blend of Pinot grapes from Sonoma, Santa Barbara and Monterey vineyards. These Sonoma County grapes grow in sand and loamy soils. Some of them from the excellent Dutton Ranch vineyard in the Russian River AVA. The Santa Barbara grapes grow in clay, silt, sand and gravel soil. And, the Monterey grapes grow in sandy loam and alluvial soil, with ocean and bay breezes blowing on them all the time. Vinas 3 is the fulfillment of a contract that Row Eleven has with their consumers. A luscious wine that is all about this grape. Besides three different vineyards from three appellations, Vinas 3 also uses three different Pinot Noir clones - Pommard, Dijon and Martini. A pretty big deal. Our wine has crisp acidity, loads of cherry pie flavors, a moderate alcohol level and a silky smooth texture and finish. Although Vinas 3 is made to drink young, it is still able to age for several years. For Pinot Noir lovers, new and old, this wine is a find. So, yes, for holiday dinners, especially turkeys, ducks, and other birds we have a great new wine. And gifts? Oh, yes. It’s always nice to share a new favorite with family, friends and anyone else who needs a gift. Imagine their delight if you’re able to give them a magnum? A liter and a half of Vinas 3? A 750ml for $18.99. The big magnum for $36.97. (Limited supply!) Shoot, yeah! We’ve hit the big time! Enjoy.

When you shop and invest locally, it provides tax revenues that are used to help finance our local schools. Local merchants are the community’s strongest supporters. Shop in their stores. Buy their goods and services. The whole community will benefit.

We can’t offer it all, but what we offer makes ALL the difference By Cherimie Crane Weatherford

It’s time to scorch a few turkeys, antagonize a few relatives and simultaneously give joyful thanks for them both. It is the season to find reason to indulge, enjoy and aggravate! After rushing the isles of Publix, decking the halls and cursing all your many blessings, please consider your holiday shopping list this year. If long lines, riotous crowds and no sleep make your spirits bright, then by all means make your merry way to the big box stores to see the empty shelves where your prize once rested. Find questionable parking places, plan impressive strategies and guard yourself against the jolliest of the highly caffeinated. After all, Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without that one item you just have to give which sadly is forgotten in exactly two weeks because the batteries are never included. Never. The current political climate offers the thinking type fodder of endless inspiration. The debates, debacles and discourse alone give hours of confusing pleasure asking for no reprieve. The choice of shopping small gets lost in the mix of enticing topics. It lacks the sensationalism and controversy that otherwise would gain notoriety. Would life really change if you chose small over all? Beaufort small businesses know your name and how to spell it. They have written countless checks supporting your tiny dancer, your serious slugger and your churches softball team. When the time arrives for donations for your socially conscience soiree, is it the

Cherimie Crane Weatherford, owner of SugarBelle boutique, Real Estate Broker and observer of all things momentous and mundane lives on Lady’s Island with her golfing husband, dancing toddler and lounging dogs.

Small businesses can’t compete with Amazon, Target, and the countless big box organization that don’t care if your charity event is a success or your boy scout reaches his goal. big box store that comes to mind? Possibly. Most likely you go the corner cafe, the local boutique, the hardware store. Just like that, they give. Small businesses can’t compete with Amazon, Target, and the countless big box organization that

don’t care if your charity event is a success or your boy scout reaches his goal. We can’t cut prices on three “hot” items to entice you to purchase 237 others at the regularly inflated price. We don’t send our annual profits to CEO’s that don’t know the smell of pluff mud, the mystique of the sandbar or the sounds of Parris Island. We continue to sweep our porches, wipe our windows and pour our profits into the punchbowl of Beaufort. We offer personality for your streets and charm for your visiting friends. We employ your neighbors, your children and those sitting next to you at church. Without our quirky names, our signature signs and our willingness to constantly give back to the community, things would look much different here in Beaufort. Dance cards, baseball shirts, cheerleading tees and silent auctions would highlight names of businesses that don’t know the names of the recipient. This holiday season, while you are on your way to stand in long lines, stop by the small retailers in Beaufort for a little local shopping. We won’t be open on Thanksgiving, because we are most likely sitting right next to you at church or waiting for you to arrive at a feast for friends and family. Go ahead and visit a local business. You may find a few things to take off the list, see a few friends and contribute to an economy that sustains Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea. We can’t offer it all but what we do offer makes all the difference. Happy Shopping Beaufort, SC!!!

The dreaded CCC Day Now what?

HIGHLIGHTING DAILY LIFE OBSERVATIONS

Lee Scott, a writer and recent retiree, shares her everyday observations about life after career. A former commercial banker responsible for helping her clients to reach their business objectives, Lee now translates those analytical skills to her writings. She recently moved to St. Helena Island with her husband and two cocker spaniels. She enjoys boating, traveling and reading.

By Lee Scott

My husband’s car just pulled out of the driveway with our dogs faces pressed against the window, staring at me. Five minutes before he had yelled to them, “Hurry Bailey and Brandy, we have to get out of here! It is the dreaded “Company is Company Cleaning Day!” “Funny” I muttered under my breath as he sped away. Coward. But he has learned through the years that when company is coming, I become a bit obsessed with cleaning my house. It’s not that it is dirty, but when you start looking at your house through the eyes of guests, you become a bit more vigilant. On the top of the list is clean bathrooms and floors and then there are the fresh linens and sufficient paper products. I find myself looking at the number of coffee mugs that actually match - the little things that guests may notice. Although he teases me, I tell my spouse that at least I am not as obsessive as my friend Alice. She is good. Very good. Not only is her house spotless, but she has chocolate for the guests pillows when they turn in at night; bottles of water on a tray, a card with the Internet connection code

and twigs of cinnamon for fragrance. Truly thoughtful. Then again, I am not as bad as my friend Tia either who is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Tia believes that mismatched mugs are homey and it helps people recognize which one is theirs. When she tells people to “Make themselves at home” she means it because she does not cook and if they want breakfast they are on their own. Then finally there is my friend Buffy who never worries about company because she does not invite them. Her idea of a dinner party is meeting people at a restaurant. Relatives are discouraged from visiting, but she and her husband think nothing of going to visit them. Her philosophy is that she has entertained all her life and she does not want to do it anymore. I truthfully like to have company over. The dreaded CCC Day is worth it especially on those mornings when the coffee pot is going strong and people wander out in their pajamas to sit on the porch and chat for hours. It is then that I remind myself and him that the cleaning is worth it, even with the mismatched coffee mugs.
