Body of second missing boater found, identified as Charleston man

COVID-19

By Mindy Lucas The body of a missing man, whose boat was discovered capsized this past week near Harbor Island, was found Thursday, Nov. 19. Don McCullock, 50, from the greater Charleston area, died in the incident, according to a news release from the Coast Guard. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased, said Lt. Cmdr. Christie Connell, search and

rescue mission coordinator with Coast Guard Sector Charleston. The search for the missing man and another, found alive, started on Tuesday, Nov. 17 after the boat they were fishing from capsized near the south end of St. Helena Sound. The two, who are unrelated, had been out fishing earlier on Tuesday and were reported missing by a family member who said they were overdue. The 27-foot vessel was found just

before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a Coast Guard spokesman Mack Marcenelle. A rescue swimmer deployed from a Coast Guard helicopter found no signs of the missing men on board. On Wednesday, a good Samaritan found one of the men about 18 nautical miles southeast of where the boat had sunk, Marcenelle said. The man was lifted to a Coast Guard helicopter and flown to Memorial Health in Savannah.

A PROPER GOODBYE

Health officials: Vaccines on the way but caution still needed By Mindy Lucas In the fight against the spread of COVID-19, this past week produced the first glimmer of hope as not one but three major pharmaceutical companies came forward with news of successful vaccines. “We consider this very encouraging news, said South FAQS ABOUT THE VACCINE Even with the recent news that a vaccine may soon be underway, much is still unknown given how fluid the situation is. However, the following are just a few questions state and local health officials fielded recently. Where will I be able to get the vaccine? In much the same way you get your flu shot, you will more than likely be able to obtain the COVID vaccination from your local health provider. The federal government is also working with large grocery store chains for distribution, and about 175 organizations in South Carolina have already applied to become approved vaccine providers, said DHEC officials. However, those are still in various stages of approval. Here in Beaufort, Beaufort Memorial expects to be a vaccination site as well, Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kurt Gambla said.

U.S. Army and Navy honor guard members hold the remains of four U.S. servicemen being laid to rest with full military honors Friday afternoon at the Beaufort National Cemetery. The bodies of the veterans, two from Dorchester County and two from Beaufort County, were never claimed by family members. Veterans groups stepped in to make sure all four received a proper funeral. How much will it cost? The federal government is committed to making the vaccine available at no charge to consumers, said DHEC’s Dr. Linda Bell.

Will my children be required to get the COVID vaccine in order to enter school next year? Requiring the vaccine to enter schools is not under consideration at this time, DHEC officials said. However, private workplaces such as a doctor’s office or other facilities, may require workers to obtain the vaccination. I’ve heard there are several vaccines. Which one will I get? It depends on a number of factors such as which manufacturer will be ready first, can effectively ship the vaccine to providers and which vaccination may be recommended for certain populations, DHEC officials noted. The agency said it will work with federal guidelines in selecting which is best for certain populations. AstraZeneca and Oxford University, for example, announced this past week that their COVID-19 vaccine produced a strong immune response in older adults.

ou may think you know “A Christmas Carol inside and out, but chances are you haven’t seen anything like this version. In a one night only event, the Beaufort Theatre Company will present a broadcast-style take on

the Charles Dickens classic with all the action set in a 1940s radio studio, complete with vintage commercials and live sound effects. Those who want to “tune in can watch the production via live stream on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The idea behind the production harkens back to a time when families used to gather at home to listen to radio dramas. “That was part of what we liked about the idea, Director and USC Beaufort Assistant Professor Libby Ricardo said. “It felt warm and family centric and it fostered community. The idea also resonated for the times, Ricardo said. “I think we’ve all been gathering around televisions or radios in cars, just listening to every thing that’s
