eaufort Academy came together as a school community and donated a full truckload of items to the Columbia flood communities. Seniors, Carlyle O’Herron, Cali Blocker, and Emily Gaskin helped load items such as dog food, baby formula, diapers, car seats, blankets, and clothes. We are so incredibly proud and thankful to our BA students, parents, and faculty for helping donate these needed items to the victims in Columbia who lost all of their belongings.

Beaufort announces significant policy change in appraising motor vehicles The Beaufort County Auditor’s Office has undergone many changes in the past 90 days since Jim Beckert took office, including appearance changes in the office, implementation of new customer service accountability performance standards, and workflow improvements designed to improve efficiency. The first major policy change introduced will affect the way motor vehicles are appraised for taxation. After researching this issue and

having multiple discussions with the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR), Beaufort County Auditor Jim Beckert determined the need for a change.

Beaufort County was one of the few counties in the state assessing motor vehicle taxes based on the highest vehicle car model, or value criteria, when the value was not available in the SCDOR valuation guide. According to Beckert, if the SCDOR guide does not list the

value of a motor vehicle, the lowest price criteria provided in the Automobile Red Book cost guide will be used as a second source of data.

“Our appraisal practices need to change to reflect the guidance given by the SCDOR, which will put Beaufort County’s method in line with peer counties.”

BJWSA gets water to hospitals in disaster areas Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority, in conjunction with Charleston Water System and Water Missions International, was asked to provide water to Richland and Palmetto Baptist Hospitals. Two operators, Kevin Sexton and Anthony Sauls, as well as technicians Dan Heaton and Jonathan Carey, helped set up a reverse osmosis treatment system for the two agencies, who provided the equipment. The licensed BJWSA employees were needed to get the system certified, operating and then to distribute the water.

Other statewide utilities participated with the reverse osmosis treatment plant, as well. This is how the system works: water is flowed from a hydrant into a swimming pool where it is pretreated (dechlorinated) prior to being treated by the reverse osmosis program. The treated water then flows into a bladder tank, and is transferred to a 250 gallon totes (tank that sits on the back of a truck). The truck then

Santa Elena Foundation announces Dyson, Klimp, and Moriarty as additions to the Board of Trustees The Santa Elena Foundation announces that Mr. Greg Dyson, Lt. Gen. Jack Klimp and Dr. Martha Moriarty are the three newest members of the Board of Directors, and each brings a skillset, background and passion that will be uniquely beneficial to advancing the mission of the Santa Elena Foundation.

Gregory W. Dyson, Lt. Col U.S. Army (retired), has been a businessman in Beaufort County since 1990. He holds business degrees from The Citadel (BS) and Boston University (MS). Greg and his wife Sarah reside on Lady’s Island. They have been active in many local civic and charitable organizations for the past 25 years to include the Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry, United Way, YMCA, Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, Boy Scouts, Friends of the Beaufort County Library, Rotary Club of Beaufort, and The Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort.

Lieutenant General Jack W. Klimp served in the United States Marine Corps for thirty-three years.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. degree and also holds M.A. degrees in Public Administration and National Security and Strategic Studies.

During his career in the Marine Corps, he held multiple command and staff positions including operational tours in Vietnam, Desert Shield/ Desert Storm and Somalia where he commanded Task Force Mogadishu.

From 1993 to 1995 he was the Commanding General here at Parris Island. Since retirement from the Marine Corps he has led a number of non-profit organizations as President and CEO. These included drug rehabilitation programs at Phoenix House and Second Genesis, two trade associations, the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association and the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute and a veteran advocacy organization, the National Association for Uniformed Services.

Dr. Martha A. Moriarty is the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Her responsibilities include managing a number of academic initiatives including new academic degree program development and directing institutional effectiveness for the university. She serves on a number of university committees and is the Institutional Accreditation Liaison to the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Prior to her position as Associate Vice Chancellor, she worked for the University of South Carolina Graduate School, serving as the Associate Director of the Extended Graduate Campus and the Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program on the Historic Beaufort Campus.

Dr. Moriarty has served on numerous accreditation committees for the SACSCOC, has consulted with a number of institutions on accreditation issues, and has presented at regional conferences.

Eat oysters and help lawyers fight for our area’s wild side If there is one thing most Beaufort County residents and visitors have in common, it’s the deep appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounds us. But preserving that beauty doesn’t come without a fight on occasion.

Over the years, we’ve fended off plans for a chemical plant, factories slated for the headwaters of waterways important to commercial and recreational fishers, offshore oil and gas exploration and dunedestroying development. Today, residents are trying to prevent beachfront manipulation at Seabrook Island, development of Captain Sam’s Spit at Kiawah Island, and the exploration for natural gas and oil off our coast.

Locally, a fledgling oyster nursery that employs local people is threatened by continually resurfacing plans for a jellyfish processing plant that would dump toxic effluent into our local waters.

It isn’t just picket signs and letters to local officials that keep these plans at bay. It’s lawyers from the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP). They know how to beat back these plans time and time again, appealing flawed permits in state and federal courts.

Unfortunately there is no corporate bankroll paying these expert lawyers. The Georgetown-based nonprofit has to rely on small grants and the goodwill of individuals who offer donations.

To help raise funds for both the preservation of our waterways and jobs, local volunteers have organized “an oyster feast that attendees won’t likely soon forget”, said SCELP board member Wendy Zara of Beaufort.

Steamers to host hike in memory of a fallen Marine This is the perfect weather to do a walk starting at Steamers on Lady’s Island and goes over the Woods Memorial Bridge, through downtown Beaufort to Ribaut Road, and then back across the Port Royal McTeer Bridge to Steamers where everyone can celebrate or recuperate. A nine mile loop. This walk is a benefit for Rowan Cooper in memory of this father LCPL Adam Cooper, a fallen Marine.

The walk will be on October 17th so save the date! Registration begins at 9:30 at Steamers and the hike will start at 11 a.m. The cost is $15 per walker. All monies go to Rowan’s college fund.

The event will have two distinct benefits.

First, it shows the family of Adam Cooper all of the community support for their loss and secondly it will raise awareness for the epidemic of veteran suicide that

YMCA Adult Power Boating class to begin November 12

The Adult Power Boating class returns Nov. 12, 2015! The class will focus on teaching the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) boating education class and offer on-water training and experience in boat trailer launching & retrieval, boat operations, docking, navigation, GPS & radio use, knots and basic safety instruction. Each session includes a three hour evening class and a three hour hands-on training class at the dock located at the Port Royal Sound Foundation in Okatie.

Register by Octobter 31st because the class size is limited. Classroom session is Thursday, Nov. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Y in Port Royal and on-water session is Saturday, November 14 from either 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Okatie. BJWSA to conduct water line treatment Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) will temporarily change the drinking water treatment method and flush water lines throughout their service areas between October 23 and November 6. The change is part of the routine maintenance program for the utilities’ water distribution systems.

There will be no interruption in service as a result of the work. Customers can use their water as normal. Customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in the tap water during this period.

brief discoloration in the tap water as a result of lines being flushed. If water appears discolored, customers should run cold water for a few minutes.

Veterans Purple Heart Golf Classic returns to Dataw For the eighth year in a row, Dataw Island will be hosting the Veterans Purple Heart Golf Classic in support of wounded veterans and their families.

In the past, this Dataw Island event has raised over $130,000 for veteran charity organizations, which include the OnCourse Foundation, the Folds of Honor Foundation, the National Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament was started with the help of Dataw Island resident and retired U.S. Army COL. Glenn Blackburn, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

“We are excited to have this great tradition happen again this year.” Blackburn said. “It is wonderful to see how the Dataw Island community embraces this event and this wonderful charity. Dataw Island has been recognized nationally as a patriot community for the last four years by the Folds of Honor Foundation.”

The Purple Heart Golf Classic will be played on November 10th, 2015 by a field of 200 supporters and 30 wounded veterans from all across the U.S. Members of the U.S. Simpson Cup team will also be competing. This year the tournament will continue to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for dependents of those killed or injured in the service.

Building hope through homes with LowCountry Habitat One month ago LowCountry Habitat For Humanity celebrated their 25th anniversary, but they still need your help to build their Silver Anniversary Home.

We caught up with Janie Lackman, Marketing and Resource Development Director, to learn more about what LowCountry Habitat has accomplished over the past 25 years and how our community can stay engaged.

What impact has LowCountry Habitat For Humanity had on the Beaufort community over the past 25 years?

To date, LowCountry Habitat has completed 42 homes in Northern Beaufort County. Within the last 6 months, more than 185 volunteers have completed 8000+ volunteer hours. Our program provides a hand up to families and in the process adds the stability and financial help needed to build better futures. Since we hold the mortgages on our homes, we get the added benefit of seeing children grow and thrive in their new homes. We see parents go back to school and children graduate and go off to college or the military.

Why did you decide to host a 25th anniversary celebration?

We decided the best way to celebrate 25 years of building homes, hope and community in Northern Beaufort County was to BUILD a 25th Anniversary home, so the goal of this event was to raise the funds to build our “Silver Anniversary Home”. These dollars allow us to buy

Beaufort County Tourism Research to be presented Dr. Andrew J. Beall, Executive Director of the Santa Elena Foundation, and Dr. Charles L. Calvert, Chair of the University of South Carolina Beaufort Dr. Andrew J. Department of Hos- Beall pitality and Tourism, are invited to present tourism research at the 35th Annual Conference of the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA).

The RCRA Board of Directors accepted the two researchers as presenters at the 2015 National Conference to be held at Captiva Island, Florida on November 7 through 11.

The Santa Elena Foundation, organized in 2014, is dedicated to research and public education. The Foundation will open an interpretive center this year and plans to open an inaugural exhibit in 2016, the 450th commemorative year of the founding of a Spanish settlement in the Port Royal Sound. Beall and Calvert investigated the likely economic impact of history and cultural tourism on Beaufort County from a new Santa Elena History Center. The success of

comparable history centers, parks, and monuments was investigated first, leading to the conclusion that 50,000 or more annual visitors will be attracted to a new Dr. Charles L. feature in Beaufort Calvert County.

After completing the initial study conducted in 2014, the researchers recommended visitor demand be tested further. Two questions were added to the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce visitor survey.

Respondents recorded overwhelming interest to visit a new history center dedicated to the interpretation of 16th Century European settlement in the area of Port Royal Sound.

Beall and Calvert will present their tourism research at the upcoming RCRA National Conference to explain how cultural and history tourism is an economic driver for the local community. Fully developed, the planned Santa Elena History Center may be the catalyst for a 5-10% increase in hospitality-related jobs in northern Beaufort County.

Send off the Honor Flight vets in style on October 23

Local veterans visit Washington, DC with Honor Flight Savannah.

On October 23rd, Honor Flight Savannah will be taking WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans on an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC so that they can visit the war memorials that have been dedicated to their military service. The bus will leave from the air terminal at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah. The public is invited to arrive at 8 a.m. and give our Veterans a great send- off to begin their trip. Please bring a photo ID to get in the Hunter gate.

The mission of Honor Flight Savannah is to provide these trips to Veterans who cannot afford to take themselves.

A chance to visit the memorials that were erected in their honor is a very special and meaningful event for these dedicated men and women. Honor Flight depends entirely on donations from the community to fund these trips.

Tips for not getting bilked after a storm hits Beaufort dodged a big bullet recently when we only got 6 inches of rain versus the 18-26 inches in other parts of the state. However, some of us suffered water or wind damage none-the-less. There is no question it is hard for some to get back to what they think of as “normal”.

Sudden property damage means demand for local rehab and construction services spike. Established contractors known for quality work are booked solid at these times, and outsiders pour in to fill the need.

There will be what they call “stormchasers” coming to Beaufort who may be less than qualified to do the work but more than willing to take your money.

Result? A lot of quick-and-shoddy work gets done, along with a lot of careless or inaccurate insurance adjustments. Even if you don’t need repair work done now, these tips will put you in good stead should the need ever arise.

How to limit your losses: Here are some tips to avoid being taken advantage of by a contractor: • Have a look at your homeowners insurance. Review your policy and talk with your agent if you notice any coverage provisions you’re unclear about.

• Work with your insurance adjuster.

Adjusters know how to inspect for damage, but you’ll help your cause if you’re prepared to point out anything unique that

could affect the valuation of the repair or replacement. Most adjusters–but not all– will favor the carrier when there are gray areas. Having your contractor on hand for the inspection can help. You can also hire a licensed public adjuster to look out for your interests at the inspection.

• Check before you hire a contractor.

Before the streets are dry contractors’ ads begin to appear on street corners in flooded neighborhoods. That’s not the best way to choose. Neither is saying yes to the first repairman to knock on your door.

So what’s the best way to vet a contractor?

Start with any recommendations you can get from people you know. Always ask for two or three references from any contractor you’re considering and make sure to check them. Let us say that again. Check the references. Also, anyone you hire should carry personal liability insurance, property damage insurance, and workman’s comp insurance. See those policies.

Angie’s List, which specializes in home improvement, may be helpful, and other online review sites as well. You can check complaint histories on file with one of South Carolina’s regional Better Business Bureau offices, the Office of the Attorney General, or online dispute resolution services such as PeopleClaim.com.

• Get a written contract, and never pay for a job in advance. At a minimum: the

• According to former storm damage insurance adjuster Jeff Kapec, currently with online dispute resolution service PeopleClaim.com, “There’s an apathy factor that both contractors and insurance carriers count on.” If you feel an estimate or adjustment is wrong or unfair and you don’t speak up and pursue it, “it’s lost money,” says Kapec. If you do pursue it you could prevail.

For insurance claims, the first line of

resolution is your adjuster. If you disagree with your adjuster’s verdict, don’t let it be final. Move up the ladder: talk with the adjuster’s boss (most likely the manager of a third-party emergency adjusting firm subcontracting flood claims for your insurance company). The next step, often decisive, is the in-house claim manager at your insurance carrier, who has authority to overturn adjusters’ decisions.

If the insurance company decides against you it’s not necessarily the end of the line.

An insurer’s decision can sometimes be overturned by filing a complaint with the South Carolina Department of Insurance, which has enforcement authority over companies and agents. Complaints may also be filed with your area BBB office or online dispute resolution services such as PeopleClaim.com.

For all South Carolinians: watch out for disaster-relief charity scams. If you’re among the fortunate whose property wasn’t affected, you can still become a “secondary victim.” According to charityvetting organization Charity Navigator, the FBI identified 4,000 bogus disasterrelief websites in operation following Hurricane Katrina. By taking advantage of genuine public compassion and ready generosity, fraudulent disaster-relief “charities” channel donations into their own pockets rather than to those who need help.

Beaufort History Museum announces fall docent program The Beaufort History Museum (BHM) is recruiting the fall 2015 class of volunteer docents to lead tours and serve as community liaisons. BHM Docent Educator, Lorrie Burleyknoles, announced the new class sessions starting on October 14th.

“The training curriculum will cover all aspects of history relating to Beaufort.

Our educators will provide docents with knowledge of the museum’s collections, history and mission,” she said. “Once docents have completed the training process, which consists of five classes, they will be asked to serve approximately four shifts per month and will commit to a one-year period of service to the museum.”

Neither of those facts, are good news for Beaufort. The two business closures announced in the newspaper recently mean more than 100 of our neighbors will see their good-paying jobs simply go away. The summer residents and vacationers are also departing for the season, and with them go the low-paying service jobs that make up much of our tourist, hospitality and service based economy.

That’s were Second Helpings of the Lowcountry comes into focus. Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue and distribution network, helping to eliminate

Rotary Club teams with BHS Performing Arts Theatre Group The Rotary Club of the Lowcountry and the Beaufort High School Performing Arts Theatre Group were both recognized by the Beaufort County Council on September 28th when they received a Proclamation declaring October as Anti-Bullying Awareness Month.

These two groups have teamed together since 2012 to combat bullying by engaging 6th graders in an educational program. Additionally, on October 6th, the Rotary Club of the Lowcountry was recognized by the Beaufort County School Board for our efforts and donations with

the Anti-Bullying project with the Beaufort High School Drama department.

DNR urges residents to report banded wood stork sightings During 2015, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) banded 59 wood stork chicks with field-readable bands, bringing the total number of wood stork nestlings banded in South Carolina to 202. The bands used in South Carolina are orange with black numbers and are placed on the upper right leg. Several other color combinations are being used for other projects. Researchers throughout the southeast are banding storks as part of a collaborative project to learn more about their movements, demography, and longevity.

“Last fall, while I was at an impoundment managed

by DNR, I resighted a wood stork with a faded yellow band. I learned that it had been banded 20 years ago in Georgia and was one of the oldest wood storks that have been recorded,” said Christy Hand, DNR Wildlife Biologist.

The banded chicks have fledged (learned to fly) and are dispersing as they search for food. Young storks are vulnerable to starvation as they learn to feed themselves efficiently, so it is particularly important not to disturb groups of wading birds that are feeding during the fall.

Please do not disturb birds to read band codes.

If you see wood storks, you can check to see if they have bands by looking at their upper legs. Some storks have multiple bands, but typically only one of the bands has a code made up of numbers and/or letters. If you see a banded stork, you can contribute to this project by recording the following information: 1) color of band, 2) color of engraved code, 3) code, 4) location of band on stork - which leg, 5) color and location of any

additional bands or transmitter on stork, 6) location where stork is located.

Please report any sightings of banded wading birds to DNR at wadingbirds@dnr.sc.gov and also to the Bird Banding Lab at www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/ bblretrv/index.cfm or call 800-327-BAND. We often can provide information about where and when the bird was banded.

Satellite transmitters are also being used by researchers to answer a variety of management questions about wood storks. Nine wood storks were outfitted with transmitters at the Washo Reserve in South Carolina last year. You can learn about their travels on the Wildlife Tracking website. The telemetry project is a collaborative effort let by University of Florida and Savannah River Ecology Lab biologists.

“In addition to the storks that nest in South Carolina, many storks that nest in other states visit South Carolina during the fall to feed,” said Hand.

“Storks are regularly seen throughout the Lowcountry, sometimes in large groups. Storks are also occasionally seen farther inland.”

“Some of the newer vehicles have different styles of seat belts, and that has contributed to some of the confusion parents have faced when attempting to secure their children in correctly,” said Jennifer Calcorzi, Paramedic and Senior Car Seat Technician with Beaufort County EMS. “If parents drive up without a car seat or bring their children to the inspection improperly restrained, there will certainly be no violation or fine. We just want

to educate the public on how to keep their children safe at every stage of development.” Calcorzi said.

EMS is one of the first agencies to respond to the scene of an automobile crash where injuries are suspected.

They have seen the tragic results of improperly restrained car seats. Research conducted by the Safe Kids Worldwide Organization says motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children.

Dry wells can save your rain soaked lawn

We certainly dodged a bullet last week here in Beaufort County. All we could do was watch as the rest of the state was experiencing a catastrophic 500 year rain event. You may have noticed flooding on your own property. There may be an area of your property that holds water much longer than other areas. Trees and shrubs that sit in standing water can be adversely affected, especially if it stands too long or happens too often.

not to mention pricey. The least expensive way I have found to deal with low or clay packed lawns is dry wells.

A dry well is a hole filled with gravel and sand. Before you begin be sure to

locate all underground utilities and irrigation equipment. One phone call beforehand can save you thousands in repairs later.

For large areas; rent a 6” gas powered auger (for fence post drilling). For smaller areas use a manual fence post digger. Dig or drill down at least 3 feet.

Fill the hole with some kind of stone aggregate. Pea gravel works great. Then fill again with play sand (I do not recommend beach sand, due to the salt). Wa-

ter in and fill with sand again. Repeat until the hole is just above level with the surrounding lawn. You do not want to create divots that someone can turn an ankle in.

How many holes do you dig? It depends on how severe the problem is.

I usually dig holes 2-3 feet apart with a pattern like that on a dice. If the problem runs along a building, perhaps a French drain would be better. There are many D.I.Y. sites that can walk you through this simple project.

Someone gave me a button with the message ‘Small but Powerful’ a long time ago. I wore it often, perhaps to both remind myself and to warn others… I’d like to rephrase that to read Small AND Powerful. A simple idea, at face value, yet an idea that can transform how we look at the world.

In our popular/modern, Western culture, we tend to believe that bigger is better: bigger homes, bigger cars, bigger bank accounts. I’ve long sensed, however, this isn’t enough; it’s limiting and unsatisfying. In fact, I believe that the true beauty and power in Life is revealed in the smallest pieces – in the astonishing artistry and wonder discovered in the details of this world around us.

I’ve been accustomed to look at the world around me and see the “big picture.”

In many ways, we’ve been trained, educated, and acculturated to this pointof-view. And looking at the big picture does have its place: it’s where we invent, dream, imagine, create, and grow. And yet, when I need to relax, rejuvenate and refresh, I look at the beauty in small things.

the beauty and perfection of a newborn baby. Babies arrive with no baggage, no guilt, no remorse (the past). Babies reflect no worries (the future). Babies live, in absolute perfection, in the moment (present). A baby is what he or she is – perfect and pure – the essence of Being.

If you’re of a more scientific mind, look at atoms: small and essential building blocks of every physical thing we know (and atoms are made of even smaller beautiful things). Think of DNA, of chromosomes, of the power and beauty of gene pairs!

So, how do we make the shift from “big picture” thinking to “detailobserving”? We can most easily begin with the practice of noticing the beauty, perfection and power in the details of the natural world around us.

When I’m looking for shells at the beach, I often begin by scanning for larger objects. But when I need to be absolutely present, I look through the piles and drifts of seemingly valueless shell debris.

If I stop and am still, if I look at each piece of broken “debris”, I almost always experience the thrill of finding tiny, whole shells: an olive shell only 2 cm long; a moon snail shell smaller even than that; a whelk shell almost too tiny to identify.

And while the shells appear fragile, these shells were absolutely essential to protecting and sheltering the organisms that lived in them – that’s power.

Consider spider silk. Spider silk is so fine it is sometimes barely visible, yet by diameter, spider silk has greater tensile strength than steel (or, think about

your reaction when you walk through a spider web!).

Become aware of the perfection and beauty found in the details of the world around you: sounds, colors and shapes. In the cacophony around us, begin to listen and isolate individual sounds: the pop of an oyster, the splash of a fish, the call of an individual songbird, or the distant laugh of a child. Be delighted by the single red flower among a mass of green foliage. Be wonder-struck by the dance of a leaf as it falls from tree to ground, the proboscis of a butterfly, the moon in the sky.

At times, life can seem so overwhelming.

If we can pause and consciously focus our attention on the beautiful small things – if we can separate out the small parts – we may find that life can be more easily managed. Begin with one small task, one beautiful detail in your life. Feeling overwhelmed by clutter? Clear out just one drawer. Life is feeling too much right now? Breathe. In and out. Repeat.

If you need to relax, refresh and renew, begin a new practice of discernment: observe the beautiful, small pieces of life.

About 10,000 years ago, the age of civilization began.

With it, grain agriculture emerged. The seeds of grasses were cultivated and then processed into flour. Flour could feed the masses. But, flour was an acellular carbohydrate.

What’s the big deal with acellular carbohydrates?

All of our plants are made up of cells that have cell walls. When we eat plants, our digestive system naturally breaks down these cell walls and utilizes the nutrients of the entire cell. When man places unnaturally high pressure and heat on plant cells, the cell walls are destroyed and the resulting product is a highly condensed substance without cell walls. These are acellular carbohydrates.

Man took the seeds of grasses, destroyed their cell walls, and created an acellular carbohydrate called flour.

Many of the original nutrients within the natural cell were lost. Sugary foods also were processed into acellular carbohydrates. As these processed carbohydrates became com-mercialized, many varieties of carbohydrate-dense foods were created. These dense, acellular carbohydrates have played havoc on our digestive systems ever since.

Today, most Americans eat dense, acellular carbohydrates at every meal and for every snack. Foods that contain 23% or less carbohydrate density are more easily handled by our digestive system; foods that contained more than 23% carbohydrate density can 14

cause chronic inflamma-tion and chronic disease.

Here are summaries of two papers that demonstrate how our food can be our best medicine.

Scientific Paper #1:1 An experiment was reported in the Journal of Periodontology in 2009. Ten individuals were al-lowed to eat whatever they could fish, forage, and cook over a course of four weeks. They only were given some basics of whole, unprocessed foods to start off. They could not practice any oral hygiene. At the beginning of the study, bacterial cultures were taken from their tongues, dental plaque, and gum pockets along with recordings of pocket depths and points of gum bleeding. At the end of four weeks, the researchers discovered that the plaque levels had in-creased in both volume and varieties of bacteria. However, they were surprised that the species

of bacteria were not virulent and that pocket depths as well as bleeding points decreased signif-icantly. In essence, these individuals ate nutrient-dense whole foods, didn’t practice any oral hygiene, and their signs of gum infection decreased.

Scientific Paper #2:2 In this other paper, researchers summarized results of 37 clinical studies to determine the actual nutrients that assisted in periodontal healing after surgery or assisted in overall periodontal health. Here are the nutrients most often associated with gum health: • Vitamin D (primary source: the sun; dietary sources: fatty fish, pastured eggs) • DHA (dietary sources: oily fish like salmon, sardines, anchovies) • Low ratios of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids (In the US the ratio is about 30:1, but in healthy societies it is closer to 1:1) • Low processed carbs and high fibers (dietary sources: fruits and vegetables) • Calcium (dietary sources: bones and bone broth, dark leafy greens, canned salmon with bones) • Magnesium (dietary sources: Swiss chard, spinach, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, raw cocoa) •Vitamin C (dietary sources: broccoli, citrus)

Santa Elena Foundation launches new digs on Bay Street

The Santa Elena Foundation, known for uncovering the earliest settlement in North America that predates both Jamestown and Plymouth Rock when excavating at a dig site on Parris Island, launched their new museum last week.

“Celebrate the Space” was the inaugural event for the Santa Elena Foundation in its new home – the old federal courthouse at 1501 Bay Street – which will be transformed into the Santa Elena History Center. The event included supporters, volunteers, committee

members, and Board and Advisory Board members who all came together to receive a grand tour of the building and learn about its upcoming transformation.

A crowd of about 200 enjoyed Spanish Tapas from Saltus, Spanish wines from El Tac-ar-on, and music with a Spanish flair by The Cluster Shucks.

During the event, Dr. Daryl Ferguson was honored as Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the St. Elena Foundation.

Executive Director of the Museum, Dr. Andy Beall, announced the kick-off for the next major chapter in establishing

the Santa Elena History Center. “Phase one will occur in November 2015 with a program series, initial exhibit, and archaeology station on the first floor in conjunction with the 450th anniversary of the Santa Elena settlement. The second phase will show the full exhibit

on the second floor in April 2016.”

Manage your portfolio, help control your tax bill Investors need to consider many factors in the process of choosing investments.

One at the top of the list is an investment’s tax cost. In fact, for some individuals, this issue may be among the more influential factors when selecting investments.

The following are some points to consider about the tax efficiency of different investments you may hold in taxable accounts. Effective Jan. 1, 2013, Congress implemented a new Medicare surtax of 3.8% on net investment income. The tax will affect taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income in excess of $200,000 for single individuals and $250,000 for married couples. The appeal of some of these investments may change depending on whether you are subject to this additional tax.

The appeal of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds Stocks. If your goal is tax efficiency, consider stocks geared more toward growth with a low dividend yield to reduce your current taxable income. The growth is tax-deferred until you sell the stock. This ability to defer tax provides some flexibility because you can manage your gains and losses based on when you sell your stock. If you hold the stock for more than one year, the gain will be eligible for a lower long-term capital gain rate as opposed to the ordinary income tax rate.

If you need an income-producing stock, consider one that will pay dividends that qualify for the reduced qualifieddividend rates versus ordinary income rates. The rate for qualified dividends is the applicable capital gains rate. Bear in mind, dividends are not guaranteed.

A company may reduce or eliminate its dividend at any time.

Qualified dividends are paid by U.S. corporations and some foreign corporations. A qualified foreign corporation is one incorporated in a U.S. possession,

eligible for tax-treaty benefits with the United States, or traded on an established United States securities market. Income from preferred instruments qualifies to the extent it represents an equity instrument rather than a debt instrument.

Mutual fund dividends do not qualify unless the dividends passed through are Ashley Dando from qualified corporations, as described above. It’s important to note that real estate investment trust (REIT) dividends do not qualify for the reduced rate.

Keep in mind, the return and principal value of an investment in stocks fluctuates with changes in market conditions. Upon redemption, it may be worth more or less than the original investment.

Bonds. Municipal bonds, which state and local governments issue, pay interest that’s exempt from federal income taxes – although some may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax (AMT).

The interest is also often exempt from state taxation if you purchase bonds issued by either the state in which you reside or a local government within that state. Although the interest income is tax-free, capital gains, if any, are subject to taxes.

Before purchasing a municipal bond, you must consider whether the taxfree interest is a big enough advantage to overcome the potential for higher yield a taxable government or corporate bond may provide. To compare a taxfree versus a taxable bond, consider the taxable-equivalent yield.

Generally, a municipal bond with a 4% yield, for example, would compare to a corporate bond with a 5.3% equivalent yield (assuming you are in the 25% income tax bracket and excluding state

tax). A decision between these two bonds might still favor the tax-free bond because the taxable bond would add to adjusted gross income (AGI) and the calculations related to AGI and AMT. In addition, tax-free municipal bond interest is not included in investment income for the 3.8% Medicare surtax.

Interest from taxable bonds is included for the tax computation.

Investing in fixed income securities involves certain risks, such as market risk, if sold prior to maturity and credit risk, especially if investing in high yield bonds, which have lower ratings and are subject to greater volatility. All fixed income investments may be worth less than original cost upon redemption or maturity. Bond prices fluctuate inversely to changes in interest rates.

Therefore, a general rise in interest rates can result in the decline of the value of your investment.

Mutual funds. You may be able to reduce your taxes by choosing funds historically managed with low turnover and minimal yields. The yield will provide an indication of the amount of interest and dividend distributions. The turnover ratio measures the fund’s trading activity.

Funds with higher turnover ratios typically distribute more capital gains, which are taxable to the investor whether they are paid out or reinvested.

To help evaluate the effects of taxes on mutual fund returns, use Morningstar’s Tax Cost Ratio, which represents the percentage reduction in an annualized return resulting from income taxes. This can provide an estimate of how much of your investment return you would lose to taxes. This type of planning can provide some guidance on the taxability of the annual distribution.

However, the fund manager’s actions will ultimately determine the capital gains distributions for the year. This

can have significant tax implications. Of course, as with any financial decisions, investment considerations should take priority over tax issues.

There are risks associated with investing in mutual funds. Your investment return and principal value will fluctuate, and you may receive more or less than your original investment when you redeem your shares.

Look at the whole picture Though our focus here is on tax-efficient investing, remember: just because an investment offers tax advantages doesn’t mean it’s appropriate for your portfolio – look at the whole picture. However, it’s a factor to consider – especially if you’re in one of the higher tax brackets.

Before you invest, you need to consider your goals regarding return and risk as well as your time horizon. Only by taking all of these factors into consideration can you determine whether a particular investment is right for you.

Lowcountry SCORE Chapter announces 2015 business awards The Lowcountry Chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) hosted their annual Awards Ceremony at the Country Club of Hilton Head celebrating the achievements of several companies they have mentored. The 2015 Client of the Year honorees included Louise Hodges, President of Greenbug, Inc. of Beaufort and Laurie Brown, Owner of Aunt Laurie’s of Bluffton. The Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce was selected as the SCORE Most Valuable Business Partner of the Year.

SCORE is a national organization sponsored by the Small Business Administration (SBA) charged with helping small businesses. Members of SCORE are retired executives who volunteer to mentor local companies. In 2015, the Lowcountry Chapter of SCORE provided 1505 client services through mentoring sessions and workshop attendance in Beaufort County.

“Greenbug and Aunt Laurie’s were chosen based on successfully meeting or exceeding their business and financial objectives utilizing SCORE resources” stated Gene Sherman, Chairman of the Lowcountry SCORE Chapter.

Lady’s Island Elementary begins recycling program

Living Well is easy at Ashton Pointe

Students in Lady’s Island Elementary’s DARTS (Differentiated Arts) morning program are leading efforts to increase recycling at LIES! Led by Ms. Lauren Kucera, Visual Arts Teacher and Environmental Liaison for the school, the students are making colorful recycling containers for their classrooms to collect paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and dried out markers. The markers will be sent to Crayola’s Colorcycle program and turned into clean fuel, while the other recyclables will be collected in a single-stream dumpster on

campus. Ms. Kucera plans to connect these artistic efforts to students’ concern for the local environment through guest speakers available through Beaufort County Public Works Eco-Cyclers Education Programs. Ms. Kucera states, “Service-based arts projects empower students to engage with social and environmental issues while making art. We have a need here at our school, energetic and creative students who want to help, and a wealth of resources in our community. I’m so excited to help facilitate these efforts.”

Coosa Elementary names O’Quinn Student of the Month

All of the Coosa Elementary students nominated for Student of the Month in September.

he Beaufort County School District Character Education program began in September and Coosa Elementary has some shining examples to share. The focus for the month of September was “acceptance”. Coosa’s first winner to be named Student of the Month is Alanna O’Quinn from Mrs. Landa’s kindergarten class. Mrs. Landa said, “Alanna is always concerned with the welfare of others. She is always looking for a way to help her teachers and her friends. On the playground, Alanna finds students who might need a friend to play with and asks them to join her. In the classroom, she always makes sure the students around her understand what they are supposed to be doing and if she finishes early, she always asks her friends if they

Beaufort Academy shuts out St. John’s Christian, 40-0

The Beaufort Academy football team rolled to its third win on Friday night, shutting out visiting St. John’s Christian 40-0. With the win, Beaufort Academy improved to 3-4. Remaining winless, St. John’s Christian slipped to 0-7 with the loss.

The Eagles, under the guidance of head coach Scott Richards, thrived throughout the matchup. Victorious Beaufort Academy dominated from

the opening kickoff until the final buzzer. Beaufort Academy excelled offensively, defensively and on special teams in the second-half of the regularseason contest.

Leading the Eagles defensively, Jackson Spratling posted a game-high 12 tackles, including five tackles for losses.

Following closely behind Spratling in the Beaufort Academy defensive category, Michael Webb added 11 tackles, five of

which were stops for losses.

Offensively for productive Beaufort Academy, Cain Richards rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns.

Contributing on the offensive side, Spratling rushed for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, Beaufort Academy quarterback Alec Melville completed 3-of-5 passes for 68 yards and one touchdown. Melville hooked up with teammate Mack Griffith on a 33-

yard touchdown pass.

Aiding the Beaufort Academy offensive attack on the ground, Melville added 30 rushing yards. In addition to the victory over St. John’s Christian, Beaufort Academy has posted wins over King Academy and Cathedral Academy.

Beaufort Academy is scheduled to visit Mt. Pleasant for a regular-season game versus Coastal Christian Prep on Friday, October 16.

Beaufort High School rolls past R.B. Stall, 63-6 Beaufort High moved ahead early and never faltered in its latest outing on the gridiron, defeating R.B. Stall 63-6 in a high school football game on Friday night.

With the win, Beaufort High improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Region 8-AAA. R.B. Stall dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the region with the loss.

The Eagles thrived on offense, defense and special teams. On the defensive side,

Beaufort High posted two interceptions, including a pick it returned for a touchdown. Reid Daughtry and Elijah Thrower each notched an interception.

Thrower returned his pick for a 50yard touchdown.

In a dominant performance, Beaufort High, under the direction of head coach Mark Clifford, blanked R.B. Stall 28-0 in the first quarter then led 48-6 at halftime.

As a team, Beaufort High rushed for 504 yards on 38 carries. The Eagles averaged 13.3 yards per carry in the matchup.

Sophomore Kyleik Middleton paced Beaufort High offensively, rushing five times for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Middleton in the Beaufort High rushing column, Wyatt Sherpensky rushed seven times for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Eagles. Another

Beaufort High running back, Jeffrey Tookes, rushed seven times for 62 yards and one touchdown in the victory.

Adding to its lead shortly after intermission, Beaufort High scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, Beaufort High will visit Hilton Head Island High School for a key Region 80AAA matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16.

Battery Creek upends Garrett Academy Tech, 25-20 Prevailing on the road, Battery Creek defeated host Garrett Academy Tech 25-20 in a high school football game on Friday night. The Dolphins downed longtime rival Garrett Academy Tech for a conference victory.

With the win, Battery Creek improved to 2-4. Garrett Tech Academy dropped to 5-1 with the loss.

Tech had posted wins over Burke, Baptist Hill, Allendale-Fairfax, Military Magnet Academy and R.B. Stall. Leading Battery Creek to the win, Tyrone Dilbert rushed for two touchdowns. Contributing offensively for the Dolphins, Adonis Williams and Alterell Chapman added one touchdown apiece.

Defensively for Battery Creek, a team under the

The Dolphins remained in the win column after defeating Ridgeland-Hardeeville in late-September.

Whale Branch drops game at Bishop England, 26-21 Whale Branch dropped a Region 6-AA opener on Friday night, falling to host Bishop England 26-21 in a hard fought football game.

Whale Branch dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in Region 6-AA with the loss. With the win, Bishop England improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 6-AA. Familiar foes, Whale Branch and Bishop England swapped leads

in the region matchup at Jack Cantey Stadium. Bishop England, however, managed to hang on for the win.

A new wine is...well a new wine!

Well, darn. More new wine? Life is pretty good. At least we are keeping our brains working. And our taste buds.

And anything else we can connect to all the sipping we are doing. Networking and social skills. Tech skills to email and text about wines between friends.

Dishwashing skills in that it is way harder to wash a wine glass when you’ve used it repeatedly in one sitting. Etc. Etc. We are truly working extra hard.

Moving forward. We are taking ourselves to Spain today. More than that, we are doing another Spanish white.

Which means we need to remember some of what we said last week about our white Rioja. Spanish white wines were not always the fresh, clean, crisp wines that we can find today. If long-term barrel aging was good for their great red Riojas, then it must be just as good for the whites. Remember? Well, not only did this theory get used with white Riojas, but it got used for many of Spain’s other whites. Don’t get nervous. Our wine this week is another white. But clean, dry and crisp! Phew!

Now that you’re not nervous, let’s start with our region. Rías Baixas. Which is pronounced “ree-ass by-shass.” “X” in Spanish is our “sh.” Easy. Also easy is the one wine you should be thinking of when you see this region mentioned.

Albariño. Their white grape of fame.

And good wines! Rías Baixas is a DO region located on the northwestern coast of Spain. The DO was created in 1986, on an experimental basis. It is a relatively small region with 180 wineries that produce more than 26,400 gallons of wine each year. There are other grapes grown in Rías Baixas, but I’m not sure we’ll ever see any of them. Short of going there in person.

In the last several years, Albariño wines have grown in popularity. And availability. (Maybe the increased availability has made them more popular.

It’s the “Which came first - the chicken or the egg” quandary.) Anyhow, the name “Albariño” is the Galician name for the grape. Galicia being an old name for the northwestern part of Spain, where Rías Baixas is. Supposedly, the variety was brought to the Iberian Peninsula

by Cluny monks sometime in the 12th century. The name means “white (wine) from the Rhine.” For a long time, it was believed it was a Riesling clone from Germany. As a story, this is pretty good,

“They know you and you know them”

but Riesling did not officially exist before the 15th century. Hmmmmm.

This variety is also used in Portugal to make their Vihno Verde wines. And, now, it is grown in California.

Albariño wines are notable for their botanical and white stone fruit aromas and flavors. If you remember Viogniers and Torrontes and Gewurztraminers, you can come close to imaging Albariño.

(Of course, why would any of us waste time imagining when it’s much easier to buy a bottle and taste it for real?) Besides their similarities to these other wines, Albariños have good acidity, freshness and crispness. They have juicy apple flavors, peaches, apricots, jasmine flowers, almond and, the best part, minerality on the finish. When we start tasting different Albariño wines, we can see that there is a range of styles. Some a bit heavier. Some lighter. Some more citrus flavored. Some more nutty. Some really drier. Just like any other grape variety.

Albariño wines with food are easy.

And fun because they are so different from our normal choices. Of course they go with most fish and shellfish. At home, in Rías Baixas, they are enjoyed with garlicky shrimp, calamari, crab, oysters, mussels, haddock, tuna, swordfish. Here we can add in grouper and flounder.

Fried, spicy or peppery, lemon and cream sauces. Paprika flavored dishes.

Pastas go well with these wines. And Asian flavors. Coconut and lemongrass sauces included. Mild cheeses. And, for sure, when you come in the door and need a quick, refreshing glass.

All of which gets us to our wine for the week. Lo Nuevo Covello Albariño.

The first thing you notice about this wine is its label. A bright colored rose blossom - the color of fresh peaches and apricots. A hint of the juicy peach and apricot flavors inside. “Lo Nuevo” means “the new.” What’s new is new! A new modern wine style. Representative of the modern Spanish white wine business. The grapes for this wine are grown on hillsides in the region, just north of Spain’s border with Portugal.

Many of them family owned. The vines are trained on overhead trellises, the grapes getting shade from the leaves. By protecting them from the sun, despite the extra labor involved, the wines have more delicate fruit flavors and floral notes. Lots of breezes from the Atlantic also help cool the grapes. And maintain the wines’ acidity. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks plays its part too.

The wine is 100% Albariño.

So, pull out your working wine glasses. Gather some friends or family around. Relax and have a taste of what’s new. Lo Nuevo Covello Albariño. For $9.97! Enjoy.

Verdi opera enlivens Shakespeare’s Othello

From the dynamic opening chords of a violent storm to the final eery stillness of tragic death, Giuseppe Verdi and his librettist Arrigo Boito transformed to perfection one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, Othello, into one of the world’s greatest dramatic operas, Otello. It was Verdi’s first opera in sixteen years – Aida - and at the age of 74, Italy was alive with anticipation of what to expect from their beloved composer. So much so that the streets were packed around La Scala on the morning of the premiere, shouting ‘Viva Verdi.’

Blanche Roosevelt, an American singer who was in the audience, wrote this from her account of opening night in her book, Verdi: Milan and Otello. “The ovations for Verdi and Boito reached a climax of great enthusiasm. Verdi was called out twenty times, and at the last recall, the house rose in a body. The

emotion was something indescribable, and many wept. Later, his carriage was dragged by citizens to his hotel. He was toasted and serenaded; and at five in the morning I had not closed my eyes in sleep for the crowds were still singing and shrieking “Viva Verdi!”

Boito’s compression of the plot was a work of art, turning nearly 3,500 Shakespeare lines into less than 800 for four fascinating acts in about two hours and ten minutes. Here’s what he converted.

Act I: Cyprus in the fifteenth century.

Otello, its popular governor, returns to the island to announce victory over the Turks. Act II: Iago, an ensign, plots the downfall of his rival Cassio, implying to Otello that Cassio has seduced his wife, Desdemona. He claims that she has given Cassio a handkerchief as a love token.The truth is that Iago has himself purloined it. Act III: Otello confronts his wife, and dismisses her explanations. Then he plots with Iago to kill the unfaithful pair that evening. Act IV: Otello, mad with jealousy, strangles Desdemona. But Iago’s wife, Emilia, reveals the full extent of her husbands’s treachery and a shattered Otello kills himself.

There are many poignant moments sung in each act, something that spoken in a theatre cannot hope to achieve.

Among them – in order - are a tender love duet “Gia nella notte...” (In the dark night) for Otello and Desdemona;

Iago’s incredible “Credo,” an astonishing portrayal of evil; and a massive ensemble ending Act III, with six singers expressing contrasting feelings at the same time, forming one of opera’s most dramatic act finales.

Best of all is the overwhelming final moments when Otello stabs himself after learning of Desdemona’s innocence.

He leans over her dead body and tries to kiss her, crying in anguish “Un bacio – un bacio ancora – un altro bacio.” Breathing his last, he falls beside her, bringing to an end a scene of timeless beauty.

Cast: Tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko plays Otello; Soprano Sonya Yoncheva sings Desdemona and baritone Zeljko Lucic (An exceptional Rigoletto in the 2014 HD series) is the evil Iago.

My Volkswagen Diesel and its propensity for cheating

Yes, I have one of those cars. You might have read all about it. The manufacturer had been manipulating the emission control software which allowed the car to cheat when it detected the emission control test. There will be a major recall. I bought the car in Maryland where emission control testing is required every two years. My 2013 vehicle had to go through the test once and it passed. Of course it passed! My car cheated on the test! Then I moved to South Carolina where the car is not tested for its emissions. Now, do I suddenly stop loving my car? It is only two years old. It is a comfortable ride and it gets good fuel mileage. (Maybe.) I do know that I can drive up to Maryland on one tank of fuel which is great.

issue, but this is not my first recall. Many of us have had cars recalled, but the scariest recall was back in the 1970s when I owned a Ford Pinto sedan. When I bought my cute little car it was one of the few new cars you could actually purchase for under $2,000. They advertised it for $1,999.

Then in 1978 Ford recalled 2.1 million cars built between 1971 and 1976. The reason: exploding gas tanks. The newspa-

pers were screaming that engineering negligence and corporate greed caused the problem. For me, as a young mother driving around with my young son, it terrified me.

According to the reports, if you were in a

rear end collision, there was a good chance your fuel tank would get nicked and then explode. I had the car fixed and then promptly traded it in for a Ford Pinto Station wagon. My thought at the time was that I really liked my Pinto despite the fuel tank issue and I reasoned that Ford would be under more scrutiny.

Today, riding around with my Volkswagen TDI Passat, I can say I still like the car. I am sorry that it cheats on tests, but after the Ford Pinto recall, I am not as unnerved. The newspapers again scream that engineering negligence and corporate greed got in the way. But for now, I will get it fixed, keep driving it for awhile, and then probably trade it in for another Volkswagen.

How to pick the right doggie daycare for your pooch

Many owners recognize that their dog may need more company and stimulation than just following them around all day.

One solution is for both of you is to go out for a long walk, off leash if you can find the right place. A second option is to send Fido off to doggie daycare for some time away from you where he can find new friends and have a rousing good playtime.

The first step is for you to access your dog’s personality – does he like being with other dogs? Does he have fun at the dog park? Not everyone is suitable for daycare.

He might be so laid back that he would never get off the sofa and have any fun.

Then it becomes a waste of money. So what are the issues around picking out a good spot for ol’ Fido assuming you think he has the personality to benefit from it?

Here are my seven areas to look for when choosing a doggie daycare facility.

1. You need to personally visit each daycare facility you are considering to review their policies and procedures.

What is their screening process? Is there staff on the floor at all times? How well trained is the staff? How many dogs do they have at one time? Do they have security measures like double gates to outside entrances? Do you see any electric cords in play areas? Are the floors in the play area non-skid surface?

And most importantly, do they have emergency procedures in place and what are they? Plus, they must require proof of vaccinations from every dog as well have copies of each dogs records of shots and the phone number for the Vet you use.

2. Getting the right mix of sizes is important. Small dogs and puppies are

about the same size but it’s not appropriate for them to play together when the pups are a very young age. You should also look at the activity level of the dogs that are already enrolled – what is their play style?

Some dogs just don’t like other breeds of dogs. For myself, I can’t bring myself to put up with Jack Russell Terriers – sorry guys but you just ain’t for me.

3. Ideally, the facility should ask to do a temperament test on your dog. This is a good safety precaution for both the dogs and the staff. It helps to determine if the daycare is right for you and the dog. Again, not all dogs are suitable for daycare play. The test is also used to match your dog’s personality with appropriate playmates so your dog is placed in the correct playgroup.

4. Don’t panic if the facility has dog breeds that make you nervous. You really need to look at the dogs as individuals.

How well has the dog been socialized?

And how comfortable is the staff with the breed. If they’re not comfortable with that breed, then they shouldn’t take it into the daycare. Having a very good screening process in place for the dogs is the real key to it here.

5. At a minimum the staff should have training in canine body language, signs of stress and basic animal care. Don’t be

shy about asking about this. Just because Betty Sue loves dogs doesn’t make her the best candidate to keep an eye on Fido.

6. How many days a week should I plan to send Fido to doggie daycare? It all depends. Some facilities require a set number of visits at first to incorporate a dog into the group. A good facility will let you know if your dog needs a break.

Obviously, younger, more active dogs need it more; otherwise they can get into trouble at home. Older, less active dogs might only need it occasionally. Take your cues from your dog.

7. And the litmus test as to whether your dog likes daycare is how he comes home.

He should be tired, but happy and relaxed, not agitated. There’s a difference between coming home tired from having fun and

coming home tired from being stressed.

So it depends on how the dog is acting. If he seems happy, his tail is wagging and he’s eager to go in there in the morning, then he probably is enjoying it. But if when you get there he puts on his brakes, he doesn’t want to go through the door, that’s a bad sign. He’s either going too often, or going to the wrong doggie daycare.

So pay attention to your pup. Some will have a great time and some won’t.

Don’t force the issue. And always remember, daycares are always in a state of flux with some new dogs coming and others going. Like any social group, the dynamic might change to a point where a previously happy dog doesn’t want to go play with the “new guy who’s a bully.”

Indie Film Corner at presents film Oct. 19

The Indie Film Corner presents Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon on Monday, Oct. 19th at 7 p.m. The movie cleverly chronicles the magazines founding by two former Harvard students, its growth, demise and everything in between. Told thru fresh, candid interviews with its key staff, and illustrated with hundreds of outrageous images from the mag itself (along with never-seen interview footage from the magazine’s prime), the film gives fans of the Lampoon a unique inside look at what made the magazine tick, who were its key players, and why it was so outrageously successful: a magazine that dared to think what no one was thinking, but wished they had. Opera rescheduled at USCB due to rain

“Il Trovatore” which was rained out last Saturday has been re-scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 1:00 p.m. at USCB Center for the Arts.

Halloween show at Beaufort High School

Beaufort High School Theater and Dance Departments presents The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for one show only — Halloween matinee only — on October 31, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the BHS Performing Arts Center. General Admission is $5 and if you are wearing a costume, only $3. There will be photo ops for those with costumes with cast members after the show.

Pat Conroy is turning 70 and the Beaufort History Museum is preparing to celebrate the milestone with a festive birthday party on Saturday evening, October 31, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard at the Arsenal. The event will feature live music, a delicious Lowcountry feast with beer and wine and, of course, birthday cake. “Pat Conroy is a local literary treasure who has eloquently expressed his love for his hometown and the Lowcountry in his critically acclaimed novels and memoirs,” said Katherine Lang, a Board member who was instrumental in bringing the party to the Museum.

“Now we want to show him that we love him back!” The event is open to the public but space is limited and those wishing to

Sea Island Fly Fishers to hold casting clinic

The Sea Island Fly Fishers meeting on November 14th will be a casting clinic.

The clinic is open to the public and is free of charge. It will be held beginning at ten o’clock, on the athletic field behind St. Peter Catholic Church, 70 Lady’s Island Dr. Beaufort. Expert fly casting instructors will be on hand to help with beginners or more experienced fishermen. Bring your fly rod or use our loaner equipment.
