A Better Kind of Cancer Care
“At Winthrop, not only are all the cancer services in the same location, so are the physicians.”
Dr. Eva Chalas is Winthrop’s Director of Clinical Cancer Services and Chief of Gynecologic Oncology. She joined Winthrop upon completing her fellowship at a major cancer center in New York City. A nationally recognized leader in women’s health and gynecologic cancer, Dr. Chalas was named a “Physician of Distinction” by the American Cancer Society.
“Most individuals diagnosed with cancer require multimodality therapy – surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. So there’s real value when a patient’s entire care team is in regular, face-to-face contact, tailoring the best treatment plan for the patient. “Most of our physicians have trained at some of the nation’s top institutions. I like to say I am surrounded by A+ people. The administration here is committed to making sure our cancer services are the absolute best they can be. I’m proud that Winthrop is the only Long Island hospital named on the Becker’s List of 100 hospitals in the United States that provide excellent cancer care.”

The kindergarten students in Ms. Sawicki’s class at Hillside Grade School recently received virtual pen pals. These virtual pen pals are kindergarten students in Georgia, whom the students chatted with via a video conference using a software called Skype. This allows the students to see each other on the SMART board technology and speak to one another as well. At first, they spoke about the differences in weather and seasons. Now, they are both learning about polar animals, especially penguins. The two classes skyped to play a guessing game about non-fiction and fiction penguins that the students created. This was such an enriching experience for the kindergarten students in New Hyde Park as well as the kindergarten students Augusta, GA.

He cites two main narratives in his work: Hidden in plain sight, in which the subject cannot be seen until the viewer takes a few steps back; and Pseudo digital, in which the artist uses rows of dots in a pattern similar to television or computer screens. He credits Seurat, Russian avant garde art of the 1900s and the work of many architects as his main artistic influences. Rain’s work has been seen in solo and group exhibitions throughout the world. March 21 to July 12 Out of the Vault: 25 Years of Collecting In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Nassau County Museum of Art presents its first comprehensive exhibition of permanent collection works in Out of the Vault: 25 Years of Collecting. Registration for Shelter Rock Patrons begins February 9 at the Registration Desk. Non-residents may register February 23 if space allows. ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION The Expats by Chris Pavone Wednesday, March 4 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Led by SRPL Librarians Susan Healy and Cathy Loechner This debut thriller is clever and highly readable. It stretches the espionage genre boundaries with its wholesome heroine Kate, a young mother with a cozy domestic expat life in tiny Luxembourg. What keeps her up at night glued to the Internet is the suspicion that a couple of casual buddies she met at a cocktail party are really assassins. Fueled by her 15 years as a covert CIA agent, Kate’s obses- sion soon leads her to deeply hidden plots that involve 50 million euros, a suddenly flaky husband and red herrings that burst into her comfortable life. Pavone’s writing displays the best characteristics of the form and will appeal to fans of suspense giants such as Robert Littell, Helen MacInnes, and Daniel Silva. MAH JONGG Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 1:30

THE VOICE OF BOXING
Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth honored one of North Hempstead’s most notable residents, the late Don Dunphy, on February 11 by inviting his son Don Dunpjy, Jr., to Town Hall. Dunphy, who has been inducted into 11 professional halls of fame, was known as the “Voice of Boxing” and broadcasted more than 2,000 boxing matches for various networks, including NBC. Dunphy also had roles in films including Martin Scorcese’s “Raging Bull,” and Woody Allen’s “Bananas.” Dunphy was a longtime resident of North Hempstead, residing within the town from 1956 until his death in 1998. SBosworth unveiled a portrait of Dunphy, which was donated by his son, and will be displayed in Town Hall, along with a short bio.
