Now that the Summer is in full swing, more and more people are heading outdoors and playing sports. Unfortunately, many people are also suffering from foot and leg pain. This foot and leg pain can be debilitating and oftentimes, sidelining. Children who have flat feet, an in-toe gait, or are pigeon toed often suffer from more foot and leg pain than those without. While there are many causes of foot and leg pain, there are several factors that can contribute. Those who are aware of these issues, and take the appropriate steps to correct them, can find their foot and leg pain decreased or even erased. If your feet and legs tire easily, are painful especially in the arches and heels, become swollen, or are difficult to move such as standing on the toes – flat feet may be the cause. Flat feet have low or fallen arches. This can contribute to leg pain. Custom orthotics can help relieve this pain. Correcting a gait, or the way steps are taken, can often also alleviate foot and leg pain. Individuals who have a in-toe step (one where the toes point inward instead of outward) or pigeon toed can be corrected using custom orthotics as well. In fact, many sufferers of foot and leg pain do well with custom orthotics. The orthotics are specially designed for each individual and their needs, and address any of these issues. Particularly when playing sports, or being active, having the right footwear and orthotic inserts can correct the gait and ensure that the foot is functioning as it should. In addition, orthotics can prevent bunion and hammertoe formation. They also stabilize the foot so bunions and other foot problems do not progress. Custom orthotics are available locally from Dr. Mary Carlson in Williston Park, DPM at 516-248-8188. Dr. Carlson can examine your feet and determine if orthotics can help to alleviate your foot and leg pain, and allow you to return to healthy activity pain free. If you suffer from foot or leg pain, don’t wait another day. Find out about custom orthotics by Dr. Mary Carlson, DPM today. Call 516248-8188 now!

How parents can simplify students’ transition to college life

A place where values are learned and lived. Our schools prepare children for life’s journey. Strong spiritual values are a living part of a child’s daily activities at every Long Island Catholic elementary school. Your child is nurtured in a unique community environment where vital interaction with other children, families, and the parish reinforces enduring moral beliefs and a respect for others. Your child also gains the knowledge, skills, and selfesteem for future success in an innovative setting where academic rigor is enhanced by an array of cutting-edge learning resources. Find out how Catholic Elementary Schools give children the academic and social skills they need to succeed. Visit www.LICatholicElementarySchools.org or call us at 516-678-5800 x 258.

NCJW to screen film on Israel On Monday, Aug. 24 at one o’clock at the Shelter Rock Library, 165 Searingtown Road, Albertson, National Council of Jewish Women/Lakeville Section will present the film “Body and Soul — The State of the Jewish Nation.” This film establishes the right of the Jewish people to live in safety and security in their homeland. It also establishes the historical, religious, political and legal basis for Jerusalem to be the united and undivided capital of the Jewish State of Israel. This will educate everyone who sees it — including students, the entire Jewish and Christian community, the media, and Congress — about the undeniable historical connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel. As Bret Stephens warns the viewers, “the efforts to act as if Israel is a uniquely incorrigible and illegitimate state that has no right to exist is at least as dangerous as Iran’s bid to acquire a nuclear weapon, because it establishes the conditions in which a bid like the Iranian bid can be seen a somehow acceptable.” Lakeville Section continues to educate the community on current and important issues that need to be presented and discussed. Dessert and refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. and the film will be shown at 1 p.m. There is no admission fee. There will be a discussion after the showing. DVD copies of the film will be on sale for $15. For information, call Miriam Chatinover (516) 487-1199.

Children’s Parade for a Safer Williston Park

Town officials visit Clark House North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Councilman Peter Zuckerman stopped by Clark Botanic Garden this week as the new roof was being finished on the Clark House. The $365,000 project is part of the town’s five-year capital plan and also included repair work such as new shingles, new soffits and new gutters. The Clark House was built in the 1880s as a two-story farmhouse, until 1923 when the Clark family took occupancy and converted the structure into a country estate. The house often holds photo exhibits, educational programs and other events for the public. Clark Botanic Garden is located at 193 I.U. Willets Road in Albertson and features 12 manicured acres of labeled gardens, trees, ponds and streams. Zuckerman and Bosworth are pictured with Parks and Recreation Commissioner Jill Weber in front of the Clark House.
