Pledges to fight political corruption By N o a h M a N s k a r At her inauguration to her first full term Monday, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas renewed her pledge to make fighting public corruption the foundation of her administration, as it was the foundation of her 2015 campaign. Speaking to local elected officials, police officers, political supporters and family, the Manhasset resident said her election confirmed that she speaks “for the people, all of the people” as the county’s top prosecutor. “Those that think they can abuse their position of trust, exploit the taxpayers or manipulate the government for their own process and their own profit must think twice,” Singas told the crowd at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. “Every crime against public trust, no matter how insigificant, corrodes our faith in government and corrupts our very institutions.” Singas, 49, took the helm of the Nassau DA’s office in an actContinued on Page 69

LIRR gets blow back on service Announced Monday a.m. opening of Port line fails to happen By J oe N i k i c After Winter Storm Jonas left a blanket of nearly two feet of snowfall this weekend, Nassau County residents were plagued with highway closures, Long Island Rail Road service suspensions and power outages.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency Saturday, banning all travel on Long Island and New York City parkways and expressways at 2:30 p.m. and further suspending all mass transit service at 4 p.m. The travel ban was then lifted at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, though LIRR service remained suspended. “This was a truly historic storm, and while we have made good progress we are not done working

yet,” Cuomo said in a press release Sunday. “The travel ban has been lifted, but New Yorkers should still avoid unnecessary travel — please use caution, plan ahead and stay safe. I want to thank the incredible people who worked around the clock responding to this storm. Many of them are still out there trying to clear the tracks and get full service restored across our public transit systems. Whether it was our thousands of state and local workers shoveling snow or the

individuals who checked on their neighbors and offered a helping hand, this was a great example of how New Yorkers come together in times of need.” According to the National Weather Service, New York City’s Central Park saw a near-record snowfall of 26.8 inches and John F. Kennedy Airport saw a record 30.5 inches of snow. Cuomo said Sunday that service on every LIRR branch would be restored at 5 a.m. Monday Continued on Page 69
