“Consummate professional that was very sensitive to our emotions and questions. Rosa was well organized and in command of each day. Her knowledge of the market was accurate and current. Rosa was honest and managed expectations effectively. There was no sales gimmicks and she became very supportive of our requirements.”
“Rosa helped us buy our new home and sell our old one. Both of our closings were completed quickly and efficiently. Our house was sold within a week, with numerous offers, and above the asking price. Rosa was very professional, always available and great to work with every step of the way. We really appreciate her expertise and hard work.”
“My experience was incredible! Rosa listened and guided me through out the entire process. She’s professional, knowledgeable, hard working and an absolute pleasure to deal with. I highly recommend Rosa Troia”

When alumni talk about their Buckley experience, they consistently credit BCDS with instilling in them a curiosity and insatiable thirst for knowledge that continues long after they leave the school’s 28-acre Roslyn campus.
Buckley sets itself apart from other independent schools by fostering a deep appreciation of learning and developing students who are committed to making the world a better place through thoughtful inquiry, critical thinking, and community engagement.
Buckley’s mission is at the heart of its curriculum, which seeks to inspire and prepare students for a lifetime of learning. Buckley accepts students as young as two years old in the Pre-Nursery program, and admits students on a rolling basis through grade seven.

Cedarmere Museum & Preserve Cedarmere, the country home of prominent 19th-century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader William Cullen Bryant, is a 7-acre site on the west side of Bryant Avenue in the Village of Roslyn Harbor. The property has a pond, boathouse, house, mill, gardens, and a spectacular landscaped designed by Bryant. Here, Bryant sought sanctuary from the congestion on chaos of the city, where he could rest, work on his poetry, and spend time surrounded by nature.
Originally used as a settlement in the early 17th Century, Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer, owned the property and in 1787 built the original house. The property passed to William Hicks and, in 1836, to Joseph A. Moulton. William Cullen Bryant purchased the 40 acre property in 1843, naming it Cedarmere after the cedar trees

which ringed the ponds (or “mere” as it was then called). Throughout the 1840s and 1860s, Bryant purchased additional land and expanded the main house.
The original house was altered by Bryant several times with the most extensive renovations taking place in 1860. After his death, the house was passed on to his younger daughter Julia, who in turn sold it to her sister’s son Harold Godwin in 1891. After a house fire in 1902, Godwin rebuilt the home in 1903 keeping the same basic form as the old house but making several changes. Following Godwin’s death in 1931, Cedarmere passed first to his wife and then his daughter Elizabeth Love Godwin, who bequeathed it to Nassau County in 1975.

At the turn of the 20th century the superiority of European automotive craftsmanship cast a long shadow over America’s fledgling car industry. To encourage American automobile manu-
facturers to challenge European quality, 26-year old William K. Vanderbilt Jr., heir to a railroad fortune and a pioneer race car driver, organized America’s first international road race, modeled after those held in Europe. The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day. These colorful, excit-
ing, and dangerous races drew huge crowds from 25,000 to over 250,000 spectators.
1906 was the only time the Vanderbilt Cup Races ran through Manhasset Valley. The FlushingNorth Hempstead Turnpike (now Northern Boulevard) was the main business street of the village in 1906 prior to the extension of the LIRR to Plandome Road.
The primary grandstand for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race was at the Start/Finish Line on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. As seen here, a second grandstand with a capacity of 500 spectators was built in Manhasset.
Another exciting location to watch the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race was Manhasset Hill (Spinney Hill), located now at the in-
tersection of Northern Boulevard and East Shore Road/Community Drive.
"Perhaps the most beautiful section of the Vanderbilt Cup course, from a scenic point of view, is the double hill at Manhasset, where the road dips into a hollow and then winds up in a sinuous course to the Lakeville Road."
The Automobile, Octob17, 1906
Horatio Gates Onderdonk was born on August 14, 1808, at Cow Neck (today Port Washington) and died April 6, 1886 in Manhasset. He was the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Monfort) Onderdonk; he graduated from Columbia College in 1829 and married Elizabeth Schenk Onderdonk (his cousin) on January 23, 1830. They had six children: Sarah (b. 1831), Maria (b. 1832), Josephine (b. 1835), Annie (b. 1839), Catherine (b. 1841) and Andrew J. (b. 1847).
Horatio Gates Onderdonk is said to have pursued mercantile interests in N.Y.C. after graduation from college, but studied law soon thereafter and was admitted to the bar. He maintained offices in N.Y.C. and at his residence in Manhasset. He was appointed county judge of Kings County by Governor Marcy. A Democrat, he attended the Reform Dutch Church in his community where the Onderdonk family plot is still located.
By 1836, the presumed year of construction of the On-
derdonk house, Horatio and Elizabeth Onderdonk had three children. One of these, Maria, is presumed to have Died in childhood. Each of the others lived to adulthood and all but Anna are known to have married. The youngest, and only son, Andrew J., would inherit the house. While following in his fa-
ther’s footsteps professionally, Andrew remained childless and the house was later inherited by a nephew, George O. Linkletter. By 1933, the Onderdonk farm was purchased for development by Levitt and Sons who soon after built North Strathmore on 46 acres bordering the north side of Northern Boulevard. The house
itself served as an office facility for the develop- ment, until the formation of the Strathmore Association, a membership organization composed of the owners of Strathmore property. The house and four corner plots adjoining “The Circle” were conveyed to the association on December 3, 1936, and the prop-
erty has been maintained by the Strathmore Association since that time.
Onderdonk House History: It is said, that the Horatio G. Onderdonk House in Manhasset is one of Long Island’s finest Greek Revival dwellings. It was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936 and entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The house is recognized as a Town of Hempstead landmark. Owned and operated by the Strathmore Association Inc., since 1936, has undergone partial restoration in recent years.
When the Onderdonk House was built in c. 1836, it was representative of a class of dwelling being built elsewhere on Long Island and in other localities within an easy commute of New York City. Many of these houses are now gone, giving the Onderdonk House added significance as one of the few examples of its type, left standing today.

The volunteer fi re service was fi rst organized in Plandome under a plan adopted by the village board in 1913.
The men of the village were arranged into six squads, each of sufficient number to move and operate the fi re fi ghting equipment.
They appointed a fi re chief, and captains were named to head up each squad.
The assembled squads were known as the Plandome Hose and Chemical Company.
Their hand-drawn fi re apparatus was limited to a single hose reel and a chemical engine, which was essentially a forty-gallon soda-acid fi re extinguisher.
Both carts were stored in the basement of the village hall.
The fi re alarm was the split ring iron gong that still stands today, suspended between two locust posts on
the north side of the building.
One squad at a time served as the designated “alarm” squad with the duty rotating monthly.
Residents were instructed that the captain of the duty squad “should be notifi ed at once of any fi re”.
The duty captain would then hustle to the village hall and sound the alarm by striking the ring with a hammer kept there for that purpose.
His squad was to report there and pull the two carts to the fi re, while the others assembled at the scene.
This plan proved to be woefully inadequate. Over the next several years the Manhasset Fire Company responded to each of the fi ve house fi res that occurred in the village.
Residents felt dependent on Manhasset to cover any serious fi re in Plandome, and by 1920 many were urging that the arrangement should be formalized.
Finally, the board took up the issue with vigor. They scheduled a special meeting with all male residents requested to attend and discuss how to provide fi re protection for the village.
Notice of this meeting seemed to reinvigorate the self-reliant nature of Plandome’s citizenry.
In the words of one: “Let us organize the fi re department fi rst. We cannot depend on outsiders.”
The meeting on Dec. 11, 1920 set in motion a total remake. A committee was appointed to properly organize the volunteer fi re department, purchase a motorized fi re truck, and install an electric fi re siren.
Funds would be solicited from the residents by subscription to a fi re protection fund. Within two months, most of that was accomplished.
The keystone event took place on Feb. 12, 1921 at a beefsteak dinner hosted by trustee Jesse Ricks.
With the Village offi cials and all who volunteered to serve in attendance, the occasion was declared a “special meeting of the fi re department”.
The board appointed a fi re chief and treasurer for the new organization and offi cially designated all who attended as its members.
During the next few years the foun-
dational structure of the Plandome Fire Department took shape.
Originally funded only by contributions, the department was fully integrated as an agency of the village in 1925.
The board assumed its proper statutory role for supervision of the department and appointed its first fi re commissioner to direct that function.
Over the fi rst half-century, there were several down turns when participation ebbed and the Department came close to collapse.
But each time, 1927, 1936, and again in 1959, whenever alternatives for fi re service coverage were suggested, Plandome volunteers rose up and said, “we can do this ourselves.”
Through the last fi fty years, that attitude and dedication has continued to improve the department professionally and technically.
What began as a loosely formed brigade, with primitive hand-drawn equipment, evolved into a highly developed organization operating sophisticated 15-ton engines.
Today, the fi re department stands as an enduring association forged by a spirit of civic pride.

Breezy Hill was the name attributed to the farm owned and operated by the Baker Family. The farm was located on approximately 95 acres of land, stretching from Middle Neck Road East to what is now Station Road.
The original farm house was purchased by Mills P . Baker in 1855, upon his relocation from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Great Neck. In its heyday, the Breezy Hill farm was comprised of several buildings across the 95 acre plot. In 1926, Mills’ son John C. Baker sold all but 13 acres of the farm and had the house moved about 500 feet to the northwest. That same building still stands at 61 Baker Hill Road, and is today the Village Hall of the Village of Great Neck.
The house was built in 1914 by Louis Sherry, the ice cream and candy entrepreneur, to resemble the Cottage of Marie Antoinette at Versailles, France. It was later purchased by Mr. Munsey, in the 1920s, who spent one and a half million dollars to remodel it. In 1925, Graham Fair Vanderbilt bought the house along with one hundred acres from Mr. Munsey’s estate. Consuelo Vanderbilt Davis, who inherited the estate, sold it to William Levitt, Sr., the builder, in 1938. Mr. Levitt built 287 houses that form the community of Strathmore-Vanderbilt but kept the mansion as the Club House for the community.
The Norwood estate was the summer residence of industrialist Robert Ryland Sizer, Sr., who ran his family’s lumber enterprise. In 1927, the property was purchased by marine lawyer Herman Goldman who remodeled the house into a 22 room mansion. He lived there until his death in 1967. The 36 acre property was bought by Nassau County in 1970. The house is occupied by the North Shore Science Museum, better known as Science Museum of Long Island, since 1973.
In 1674, Captain Matthias Nicolls was given 200 acres of land in Cow Neck for legal services rendered to the Town of Hempstead. His land, which later grew into twelve hundred acres, was located in the heart of what is presently Plandome Manor. Mr. Nicolls held prestigious positions over the years. He was the Mayor of New York City, Speaker of the Colonial Assembly, Secretary of the General Assize and Queens County Judge. He built a manor house on his land which was used as a point of reference as one travelled north of the central village, and it is probably the reason why the term “Plandome Manor” was etched into the minds of those who inhabited the surrounding land. Over the years the property was divided in smaller parcels and the manor house changed owners.
At the turn of the twentieth century the Manor House along with twelve acres of land was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Martin W. Littleton. Mr.
Littleton was a former Congressman from Brooklyn and a noted criminal lawyer. He became famous when he defended Harry K. Thaw in the Stanford White murder. He died in 1933. Two years later, Mrs. Littleton decided to build a private library on the property to house her extensive collection of rare books that included bibles written in different languages, and ancient art. The library was a onestory concrete building resembling the architecture of a house she had seen while touring Palestine. The ceilings, inset with precious stones, depicted the celestial heavens. Outside, a concrete wall (100 feet long) was painted to illustrate ancient biblical scenes of Nazareth, the Mount of Olives, the Salt Sea, and people dressed in ancient garb, among others. The Memorial Library was eventually sold and it is still used as a private residence. Today, remnants of the concrete wall still exists as a witness of bygone days. As for the Manor House, it was demolished in November 1998.
This bible, written in Church Slavonic language, is part of the History Center’s collection and it is believed to be one of the rare bibles from Mrs. Littleton’s Memorial Library. Visit

600-acre
acquired four hundred additional acres. In 1693 he commissioned Joseph Latham, to build a tidewater Gristmill on the bay, near Gildersleeve’s Creek (later Mitchell’s Pond, now Leeds Pond). The mill had a wing that served as the home of the miller’s family. In 1718 William sold 609 acres with the manor house and mill to Latham for 2,350 English pounds, and moved to his Suffolk estate. The mill and surrounding property passed thru generations of Latham’s, Mitchell’s, Hewlett’s and Leeds. Today, it still stands as a private home, slightly altered.
