Suffolk begins counting ballots on Tuesday, immediately after deadline

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z With more than 22,000 absentee ballots and 1,200 affidavit ballots cast by residents remaining to be counted, officials from the Nassau County Board of Elections said they will not begin the task until next week.

While Suffolk County’s election board began counting such votes on Tuesday night, the deadline for absentee ballots to be submitted, Nassau County Board of Elections Democratic Commissioner James Scheuerman said state officials required affidavit information to be submitted by Friday. Scheuerman said the election board “did not feel it was prudent” to begin counting the votes until Nov. 15 to make sure all the voter information was verified.

According to Scheuerman, 22,538 absentee ballots and the 1,200 affidavit ballots remained outstanding. Statistics provided by Scheuerman showed that 12,769

of the 22,538 absentee ballots returned to the county were submitted by registered Democrats, while 5,310 were submitted by registered Republicans.

Additionally, 2,796 absentee ballots were submitted by registered voters with no party preference.

Voters who go to polling places who are not listed on the rolls can cast affidavit ballots, which are counted once they are verified as proper by election officials.

Despite outstanding ballots, some candidates in the county have already declared victory.

Town of Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman, who leads Democratic County Executive Laura Curran by more than 11,000 votes, said he feels “confident” about the race despite Curran not being mathematically defeated yet. BY V I C TOR I A CARUSO With last Friday marking the end of the first quarter of the school year, the Herricks Board of Education reflected on the schools’ progress in keeping students safe and hosting more inperson events since the start of the pandemic.

In August, the Herricks school board adopted COVID-19 prevention protocols that included masks for all individuals as well as provisions for social distancing, transportation and contact tracing.

“Because of our many health and safety protocols and everyone’s high levels of compliance with these requirements, we have remained healthy, safe and successful as a school community,” Superintendent Fino M. Celano said at last Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting.

According to data released by the state’s COVID-19 Report

Card System, the Herricks school district reported 23 positive cases among students, teachers and staff from Sept. 13 to Nov. 4.

Celano said the district continues to have some of the lowest numbers of positive COVID-19 cases among all school districts in Nassau County.

In light of the low case rates in the district, in-person afterschool programs, extracurricular clubs, events and fundraisers have been able to resume.

“It’s certainly great to see our students back in live meetings, extracurricular activities, on our athletic fields, and in the gym,” Celano said. “I can see how thrilled and excited everyone is and we join them in that excitement.”

This past month Herricks High School hosted a concert presented by Tri-M Music Honor Society members; It was the school’s first live in-person concert since early March 2020. Other traditions, like the

school’s annual pumpkin painting fundraiser, have also been able to continue.

“It was a huge success,” said a member of Herricks High School’s Student Government, adding that the event gave the students “a sense of normalcy.”

Celano also spoke about the CDC’s recent recommendation to have children ages 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine.

“I would urge all parents to discuss the vaccine with their child’s pediatrician and strongly consider getting the vaccine for their child,” he said.

“The vaccine as we know is safe, effective, free, and the most effective protection from the COVID virus, so please consider that and have a conversation with your child’s doctor.”

The next Board of Education meeting will be on Nov 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point will suspend a program that allows its midshipmen to spend a year of practical training across international waters due to sexual assault allegations, according to a letter from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The department, in a letter sent to midshipmen last week, said officials are hopeful a plan will be sent to Congress so sailing can resume by December.

“While we know that this decision will be disappointing to many, we also expect that as leaders who have chosen the path of service, you will support it and each other,” the letter read.

The program, which dates back to 1942, has a sea period of 135 days for sophomores and 265 days for juniors. Midshipmen earn roughly $1,000 a month during their time at sea, working on commercial vessels

and becoming educated on labor relations in the ocean shipping industry, according to the academy’s website.

Efforts to reach officials from the department and the Merchant Marine Academy for further comment were unavailing.

The announcement comes more than a month after a female cadet of the academy detailed sexual assault allegations during her Sea Year training.

According to the cadet, whose name was not disclosed, an engineering supervisor raped her after a night of drinking.

The cadet said she was a 19-year-old virgin at the time of the alleged incident when she was assaulted by the 60-year-old supervisor, whose name was also not disclosed.

The supervisor who raped her, she said, made derogatory comments to her and other women on the ship.

Floral Park gym helps win Emmy Legacy Strength’s transformation during pandemic featured on News 12 results in award

Joey Olivo, owner of Legacy Strength in Floral Park, saw COVID-19 as a chance to renovate and reimagine his private gym to make it more accessible during uncertain times.

Something Olivo didn’t see coming from the pandemic was his involvement in winning an Emmy.

News 12 Long Island during the summer of 2020 did a feature on Legacy Strength, profiling its business on Jericho Turnpike as it reopened from COVID-19. On Oct. 30, it won the business/consumer category for short-form content at the 64th Annual New York EmmyAwards.

“The station called and said ‘Guess what, you got nominated for an Emmy,’ and I was so stunned,” Olivo said in an interview. “I was like ‘What do you mean, how’s that possible?’”

local business coming back after the pandemic and included three minority-owned local businesses including Killer Body Fitness in Mineola, Bully Sound Records in Great Neck and the Floral Park gym.

Repurposing the gym was a process that went from two weeks to months, according to Olivo. The delay in plans came at an inopportune time, as Legacy Strength was still closed while surrounding gyms were beginning to open. Olivo said at the time some clients were switching gyms, but he wanted to take the time on changes in order to make sure they were done the right way.

“I said to myself if we do this right we’ll be able to reopen with a whole new base, a whole new vibe and a whole new feeling which is what people want,” Olivo said. “We did and it worked, everybody’s looking for something new and fresh.”

Olivo’s path to owning Legacy Strength started out of high school, when he was a personal trainer. The New York native, who grew up here and in Puerto

Rico, went the corporate route briefly, he said, but returned to his passion of training and set a goal around 2008 to open a gym five years after returning.

“I love helping people and seeing people change, making them better,” Olivo said.

“Instead of pushing paper I decided I wanted to start pushing people.”

Part of adapting to COVID-19 was offering services online, but more importantly renting out his gym equipment to clients. None of what Olivo thought he was doing would end up with an Emmy win, something he said humbled him and helped him get a new focus on committing to something.

“It’s something you never thought you would achieve, realizing how much work goes into it and all the people in the background just to get it right,” Olivo said regarding the news feature. “It puts your mindset on another level that you can actually achieve anything you put yourself to with the right people behind you.”

Children eligible for Pfizer vaccine Kids ages 5-11 can receive shot in Nassau after CDC endorsement last week

Children ages 5 to 11 throughout Nassau County became eligible to receive Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine last week.

Last Tuesday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky endorsed the recommendation of an advisory committee that Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine for children be approved. Two days later, Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park inoculated the first seven eligible children.

The CDC action extends the vaccine to 28 million children in that age group across the country. Previously the vaccine had been approved for children 12 and older.

Health officials said the vaccine was nearly 91 percent effective in preventing the coronavirus among children ages 5 to 11, similar to the results it yielded with adults.

“We know millions of parents are eager to get their children vaccinated and with this

nurse or local pharmacist to learn more about the vaccine and the importance of getting their children vaccinated.”

Dr. Charles Schleien, Northwell’s pediatrics chair, said six in 10 children who are at least 12

years old were fully vaccinated throughout New York as of last Thursday, something he wants to improve on.

“We need to get that number higher – and starting today, we need to chip away at vac-

cinating the newest group of eligible children,” Schleien said in a statement. “The vaccine is safe. It works – and it will be the way we successfully lower COVID stats across the region, nation and world.”

Dr. Sophia Jan, Cohen Children’s chief of general pediatrics, said children receiving the vaccine will help the country get back on track with normal lives quickly and effectively.

“Not only will they be able to get back to school and enjoy the holidays, but the important things – like hugging their parents and visiting their grandparents – we can start thinking about these things again,” Jan said in a statement.

Northwell established a vaccination pod at 1 Marcus Ave. in New Hyde Park that will inoculate the public on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the state Health Department, more than 73 percent of Nassau County residents were fully vaccinated as of Tuesday, the most up-todate figures available. Nearly 95 Continued on Page 45

Blakeman takes ‘middle ground’ on fees While awaiting final count for county exec he eyes Curran’s handling of reassessment

Town of Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman said he will take a “middle ground” approach when it comes to potentially eliminating various county fees during an interview with Blank Slate Media on Tuesday.

Blakeman, a Republican who declared victory over County Executive Laura Curran, a Democrat, last week, has a lead of almost 12,000 votes over the incumbent, according to the latest results from the Nassau County Board of Elections.

Before the county’s 2022 budget was approved, Republican legislators proposed eliminating the county’s $350 tax map verification fee and the $55 public safety fee as well as reducing the $300 recording fee to $50. Blakeman said he wants to work with the Legislature to see what makes the most sense for the county and its taxpayers before cutting anything.

“I’ll look at every fee and determine whether or not it’s a reasonable amount for the services provided or whether it’s a reasonable penalty for the infraction that the person is accused of,” he said.

Blakeman, who previously served as the liaison between Nassau County’s Republican Party and former President Donald Trump, said he feels “very confident” that he will be named Nassau’s next

Curran to be able to erase a 12,000-vote lead with only 22,000 absentee ballots remaining,” Blakeman said. “I’ve talked to people in both parties who are knowledgeable about these things and they said, ‘Bruce, you won.’”

Since announcing his campaign to replace Curran as county executive earlier this year, Blakeman has been critical of her handling of a countywide reassessment over the past few years. Blakeman called for an audit to be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the reassessment, with the potential for a new method to be implemented.

“I’m not wedded to one solution over the other until we roll up our sleeves and get under the hood and see where the problems are, but we know there are problems,” Blakeman said. “I would imagine that the audit is going to show the same things that we found throughout the campaign and that is that most people are very, very upset with valuations on their homes.”

While wanting to wait and see what results the audit of the reassessment will yield, Blakeman said, conducting the process once every decade could be a reasonable solution. He also reiterated that a reassessment was necessary throughout Nassau County, but said the way Curran went about it was not effective.

After running on a platform of wanting to cut taxes and make Nassau more affordable for its residents, Blakeman said he wants to increase the tax base by promoting businesses and creating more economic development across the county.

“I’m going to be a very pro-business, pro-economic development, pro-job county executive and work with every community to increase the business activity,” he said.

In terms of coronavirus vaccine mandates, Blakeman, who is fully inoculated, lauded the importance of having everyone being able to make the choice. The government, he said, should not be in a position to tell first responders and police officers that they will be terminated if they do not get vaccinated.

“That’s a lack of common sense,” Blakeman said. “I believe the requirement to get a vaccination is a decision that needs to be made between a patient and a physician and that people should make their own health care choices.”

In terms of redistricting, Blakeman declined to comment on what specifically should be done in Nassau, saying it is the Legislature’s responsibility. He did mention, though, that the new lines should reflect the geography and diversity of the entire county.

Singas touts trailblazing for women Court of Appeals judge speaks on mentoring next generation at Women of Distinction event

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Madeline Singas, associate judge on the New York Court of Appeals, said during a keynote address at the Nassau County Women of Distinction awards event that she will continue “celebrating, mentoring and motivating young women to be better and to do better.”

The remarks came Tuesday night, when Singas, a Manhasset resident, was one of 43 women honored in Blank Slate Media’s first Women of Distinction of Nassau County awards event.

Singas, a native of Astoria, Queens, who served as Nassau County district attorney, began in 1991 as an assistant district attorney in Queens County. She said that being where she is today would not be possible without the men and women who helped her.

“I am keenly aware I would not be addressing you this evening if not for the strength and commitment of so many wom-

en who came before me and the selfless generosity, grace and support of them who took the time to extend themselves on my behalf,” Singas said. “I am also grateful to the many men in power, who recognized something good in me, who always made room at the table or helped lift me up the ladder of success.”

In 2006, Singas joined the Nassau County district attorney’s office, establishing Nassau’s first Special Victims Bureau. She worked with children, the elderly and victims of domestic and sexual abuse for years. In 2011, she was appointed chief assistant district attorney, working to design programs for those suffering from mental illness or drug addiction.

Singas implored the audience not to be content when reaching the pinnacle of a field, which many of the women being honored Tuesday have done.

Instead, she said it is important to be a trailblazer and make sure there are women behind

you following your footsteps.

“We need to keep our foot on the gas and work harder to ensure that more of our sisters follow us to the top,” the judge said.

Elected twice, in 2015 and 2019, as Nassau County district attorney, Singas oversaw a staff of over 450, managing up to 30,000 criminal cases annually. Under her tenure, crime dropped in the county by more than 25 percent, making it the safest community in America two years in a row, according to U.S. News and World Report.

On top of that, Singas increased female managers in the office from 57 percent to 67 percent.

Singas said that soon a seat at the table will not be enough for women, and they should strive for more.

“We cannot remain content with the possibility that women can sit in the big chairs,” Singas said. “We have to work hard to ensure that women following us can get to those corner offices, that it’s not a possibility, but a probability.”

Mullins found guilty, docked $31K: reports

Port Washington resident Edward Mullins, the former president of the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association, will be docked more than $31,000 for comments he made about two government officials and for tweeting arrest information about New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s daughter, according to multiple reports.

Mullins was docked 70 vacation days after being found guilty of administrative charges last Friday, the same day he retired from the department, according to officials. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea stressed the importance of all officials abiding by the department’s rules and regulations.

“No member of the New York City Police Department, regardless of any other status, may violate the rules of the department and engage in conduct unbecoming a police officer,” Shea said in a statement. “Regardless of one’s position as a union leader, as long as they are still a police officer, they will be held to the laws, regulations, and standards of conduct required of all members of the service. Simply speaking: this behavior was unacceptable.”

Efforts to reach law enforcement officials for further comment were unavailing.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board, which tried the case regarding the language Mullins used about the two officials, wanted him fired. Last week Mullins said he believed the comments he made about former Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot and Congressman Ritchie Torres last year were “appropriate,” according to multiple reports.

Mullins said he felt the need to speak

out against Barbot last year when she reportedly denied a request from a former Police Department chief to provide officers with protective equipment. Mullins also said he spoke out against Torres, an openly gay person who was in the midst of a campaign for public office, because he had accused officers of engaging in a work slowdown that resulted in an uptick in murders and shootings.

Torres, who was a city councilman during the time of the incidents, told the Daily News that the penalties against Mullins were nothing more than “a slap on the wrist.”

Efforts to reach the congressman or Barbot for comment were unavailing.

Officials also said Mullins was found guilty of publicizing the information about the arrest of de Blasio’s daughter, Chiara, at a demonstration last year over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Mullins and his lawyer, Hugo Ortega, argued that the information in the report Mullins tweeted was already posted online.

Efforts to reach Mullins or his attorney for comment were unavailing.

Mullins, who served as a member of the NYPD since 1982, assumed his role as president of the police union on July 1, 2002. FBI agents raided the union’s Manhattan office and his Port Washington home in September.

Since Mullins’ service in the department spanned over 20 years, he is able to receive annual pension funds of close to $120,000 a year, according to multiple reports.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association manages a $264 million retirement fund and its 13,000 members make it the fifth-largest police union in the nation, according to the group’s website.

Dems tout SALT relief in legislation $10K cap on deductions for state, local taxes would rise to $80K in Build Back Better draft

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Democrats recently reached an agreement on President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act, including easing limits on the state and local tax deduction, known as SALT. Early Saturday morning, the House of Representatives passed a procedural vote for the bill, setting up conditions on the final vote. Also finalized with the vote are what is contained in the bill itself.

Congress is in recess this week, setting the earliest date for passage as next week. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said if the bill passes in the House, he hopes the Senate will pass it as well before Thanksgiving.

Suozzi previously said to reporters that New York is negatively affected by the deduction because it is the largest net donor to the federal government and residents are taxed on income used to pay local and state taxes. In 2019, Suozzi’s bill to restore the SALT deduction passed in the House but not the Senate.

If the bill passes in the House, the tax deduction still faces opposition in the Senate. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, said last week, following a proposal to increase the cap to $72,500 for five years, that the last thing Democrats should be doing is “giving more tax breaks to the very rich.”

“According to media reports, Democratic negotiators are working on a repeal of the SALT deduction cap for up to five years, which would cost $475 billion and give the richest 5% $400 billion in tax cuts,” the statement said. “As a result, the top 1% would pay lower taxes after passage of the Build Back Better plan than they did after the Trump tax cut in 2017.

Police unions demand bail overhaul Officials hold news conference after Suffolk judge deems part of discovery law unconstituional

A few days before the elections, a dozen law enforcement unions demanded an overhaul of New York state laws on bail and discovery.

The issue was prominent in the race for Nassau County district attorney, in which Republican Anne Donnelly defeated state Sen. Todd Kaminsky, a Democrat, who had voted for an overhaul of state bail laws that eliminated pretrial detention and monetary bail conditions for most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies.

The law enforcement unions argued that even though the state Legislature subsequently made changes in the law, it still was allowing dangerous criminals to be released.

On Oct. 22, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini said that a law that allows criminal defendants to move for a court order granting them access to crime scenes, including an individual’s home, had been deemed unconstitutional.Sini said the victim in the case would have had Fourth Amendment rights, the expectation of privacy, violated.

At the news conference, John Wighaus, president of the Nassau County Detectives’ Association, said: “The decision that has been reported recently regarding the unconstitutionality of a portion of the ‘discovery law,’ points out the complete failure of the entire package of extreme ‘bail and discovery’ laws that were passed in Albany. In particular, the ‘cashless bail’ law has been disastrous for law-abiding citizens.”

Questions arise in local elections

R

epublican Mineola Trustee Dennis Walsh said during a recent candidate forum that voters should support his bid for North Hempstead’s 3rd District to help maintain the two-party system in the town.

At the time, Walsh had a point.

He was running for the seat of Angelo Ferrara, the lone Republican on the sevenmember Town Board, who was retiring, and apparently Walsh like many others thought the Democrats would maintain their hold on the two other seats up for election as well as the races for town supervisor and town clerk.

The final results of the county and town elections won’t be known until all mail ballots are received and counted.

But as things stand now, the town Republicans, including Walsh, will have won three of the seven Town Board seats – and both the town supervisor and town clerk seats.

And that may be taken as good news for Democrats in Nassau County.

Republicans maintained their holds on supervisor, clerk and board positions in the two other towns in Nassau County.

In Hempstead, which accounts for about half of Nassau’s population, Republicans maintained a 6-1 advantage on its Town Board.

And in Nassau County, if the current results stand, Republicans will have captured all four countywide positions — winning the county ex-

ecutive, district attorney and comptroller positions, and keeping the county clerk seat.

Other than county executive, the races weren’t even close.

Add to that the Republicans’ performance in the votes for the County Legislature, where Republicans increased their 11-8 advantage to possibly 14-5, depending on absentee ballots.

In other words, Republicans would now have total control of government in Nassau County – with county Democrats unable to do anything to stop them short of a lawsuit.

What makes these results so startling – and concerning to Democrats – is that as of February registered Democrats outnumbered registered Republicans by nearly 100,000 voters — 434,327 to 335,771 — with blanks, or those with no party affiliation, at 276,000.

It also says much that less than 30 percent of the 1.1 million Nassau voters came out to cast a ballot.

Which brings us to the question of what accounted for this Republican tsunami and what it means at the town, county, state and even national level.

This is no shortage of theories and undoubtedly the outcome of each race may have more than one reason.

Let’s start at the national level – particularly the inability of Democrats to reach an agreement on President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package and the $1.75

trillion Build Back Better package before Election Day. Did the Democrats’ failure to reach an agreement on either piece of legislation help depress Democratic turnout in Nassau County? County Executive Laura Curran only received 124,000 votes as of election night in a county that as we pointed out has 434,000 registered Democrats and 276,000 people with no affiliation. Curran’s Republican opponent, Hempstead Town Councilman Bruce Blakeman, received 135,482.

Would it have made a difference if Democrats voted a week earlier to approve an infrastructure package that will provide New York with hundreds of millions of dollars for rail, highways and bridges, airports, water projects, vehicle charging stations, high-speed internet and protection against

cyberattacks?

The Labor Department report last Friday also showed a whopping 535,000 jobs created the month before and upward revisions on the previous two months. And the stock market hit a record high.

Would that have made a difference if those numbers were hit just a week earlier?

Or did cultural issues, such as critical race theory, masks in schools and abortion, carry the day?

Republicans successfully promoted the bogus threat of critical race theory in public schools where it is, in fact, not being taught – and the Democrats failed in places like the Virginia governor’s race to counter it.

If national issues did not play a part, how much blame goes to Jay Jacobs, who is not only the Democratic county

chairman but the state’s as well. He led an effort that essentially went 0-for-Nassau County.

The Democrats’ dismal performance in Nassau County and his recent comments about the mayor’s race in Buffalo have already raised calls for his resignation both in the county and the state.

Jacobs might, in turn, point to some Democrats who called to defund the police in the wake of protests of George Floyd’s killing.

Or overreach by progressive and liberal Democrats from the city on issues such as bail reform.

State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, the Democratic candidate for district attorney, had a stellar record as a Queens assistant district attorney and as an assistant U.S. attorney.

Democrats now asking what happened “What happened?” That’s what all of the Democrats who called me wanted to know.

They can’t believe that their party took such a beating at the polls on Election Day. Locally and nationally, the results were a disaster for the Democratic Party.

Did it have to happen? Could it have been avoided? What does it mean for 2022? Here is my take on why the political tsunami occurred.

To start with, Democrats never do well in what we call an “off ” year. I ran for office 12 times and was thankful that I did not have to run in an odd year. Even years always give the Democrats a fighting chance because there are significant federal and state contests.

Democrats show up when it is a fight over a U.S. Senate seat or if it is a presidential contest.

But Democrats get lazy in a year where there are mostly local contests and this year proved it.

Getting past the lazy factor, at this moment Democrats are unhappy with their party.

For the past two months, the

Democrats in Washington have been arguing over the contents of the Build Back America legislation. Day after day, the story has been about trillions of dollars and not about the content of this critical bill.

At the same time, the party has held back the passage of a Senate bipartisan roads, bridges and mass transit aid bill. Had one or both of these bills passed in late September, the party would have had bragging rights to one of the most significant pieces of legislation in the past 50 years.

If the President’s Build Back Better bill had been passed, Democratic candidates at the state and local level would have been talking about pre-K programs for all families, reduced drug prices, and some form of paid family leave.

Senior citizen voters would have been thrilled about getting expanded Medicare benefits including hearing aids and home health care assistance.

Middle-income families would have been looking forward to new tax benefits. Suburban ho-

meowners would have been happy about getting the deductibility of their local tax payments.

Instead of being armed with a menu of great public benefits, Democratic candidates spent most of their time defending themselves over the teaching of history that includes the issue of slavery.

In Virginia, Terry Mc Auliffe, a respected former governor, got in the middle of a debate over parents’ rights and power over local

curriculum.

Had Mc Auliffe been able to boast about Democratic achievements in Washington he would not have been fighting a rearguard battle over issues, which were not credible.

The next question I got is “what happened on Long Island?”

It’s e very simple story. Last year the Republican Party took a beating. They lost the White House, the Senate and the House.

The Trump loyalists were itching to fight back after their candidate lost. Old-line Republicans, unhappy with the Democrats in Washington, were energized to show up at the polls and they did.

Solid candidates such as Democratic County Executive Laura Curran got caught in the tidal wave, despite four years of dedicated public service.

Are the Democrats doomed for 2022?

The answer will depend on whether or not the party gets it act together.

If the Congress passes the two

major Biden proposals and spends the time, explaining its benefits there may be a chance that the number of party losses can be prevented.

At this moment, the progressive House members are dictating the terms of the major bill. Once the two bills are passed, the moderate Democrats will have to take center stage and decide what the party stands for.

There is time for the national Democrats to become organized and show that they can govern.

They have inflicted serious damage on President Biden, who is the man who helped them get elected. They have to give him his big wins and start acting like adults.

The national Republican Party is stuck on appealing to the worst instincts of its base and can be defeated with accomplishments and push back on ugly rhetoric. The Democratic Party has gone through many tough years followed by many successes. Election 2021 has to be their wake up call.

A LOOK ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

When TV advertising needs to get real

G

enerally, when we’re watching TV together, my husband and I get along. We long ago negotiated what he must watch without me — “Naked and Afraid” — and what I must watch without him — “Married at First Sight,” essentially the same show, but with fewer snakes and more clothing.

Which left us in relative harmony Until the other night, when I was shocked by an outburst of criticism emanating from my life’s partner.

“That’s insulting! It’s stupid!

Who would even watch such a thing?” he yelled, presumably at the television, though it felt aimed a little bit at me.

What was the abomination?

A young man and woman were kissing by firelight on a beach when suddenly a bell buoy in the foreground fell over, making the sound of a bell.

The young woman got up and walked, zombie-like, out of the surf and straight to … Taco Bell.

My husband was furious. “Look at the shape of that thing!” he said, meaning the

buoy. “The whole bottom part is missing. It’s like using just the top of an iceberg — there’s always more below water or why would the top stay on top?”

“OK, but they just wanted to make the noise…”

“And that’s another thing!

It would never ring like a bell, falling over onto sand. It would just thud.”

“Is that all?”

“Certainly not. This thing, whatever it is, is red, but it’s painted with the number 5.

But odd-numbered buoys are always green. Everyone knows that. How dumb do they think we are?”

He ranted on, completely missing the most important point, namely what bothered me — where was the young man? It’s like she left him for dead when she went for the tacos. Why didn’t he go with her?

Unless he really is dead and she’s truly a zombie? In which case, what’s in those sandwiches?

To be fair, there are some ads we both like. Oddly, most of them are for insurance companies.

A Look on the Lighter Side For example, we both enjoyed the Allstate commercials where actor Dean Winters played the personification of “Mayhem” as a driver’s blind spot or a phone buzzing under the car seat or — my favorite — as a cat riding a Roomba, stopping up sinks and generally wishing its owners dead. “Avoid Mayhem like me,” was always the tagline.

I tolerate the Geico gecko until one day I can’t. The Gecko is walking through a forest, blathering on about how you can’t plan when a chestnut

might fall onto you. Then suddenly one almost does. Except…

“That’s not a chestnut! It’s not even an acorn! It’s a hazelnut,” I rant. “Do they think I won’t know the difference?

They sell chestnuts on every corner this time of year.” Then the Gecko talks to the hazelnut, saying, “Well, got things to do, Mr. Chestnut.” How stupid do they think I am?

Our lowest moment came with another ad for Allstate. A woman is driving along in a convertible when suddenly we hear the cheery brass music of the late Hugh Masekela’s hit, “Grazing In the Grass.” When we look back at the car, musicians are in the back seat playing flute, cornet and electric guitar.

“That’s so stupid! It’s ridiculous! How dumb do they think we are?” my beloved complains.

“What’s wrong with it?” I ask. I have unwittingly set off an explosion.

“What’s wrong? What’s wrong, you ask? Have you noticed that nobody is blowing into their instruments?”

“Now that you mention it, I see that. But maybe it’s for a

COVID-safe workplace,” I suggest meekly.

He’s having none of it.

“They could at least move their fingers!” he roars. “There’s no danger in that. But no, they just sway back and forth with their hands frozen. How can anyone believe that?”

“I don’t think anyone looks for ads to be believable,” I say.

“And where’s the cowbell?

There’s no cowbell! There’s no COVID problem with a cowbell!”

I didn’t dare to mention that the electric guitar was not plugged in.

Then another ad comes on featuring an instrument that I happen to know something about. There’s a man at a piano keyboard playing up the scale until his hands leave the keyboard entirely, but the notes still continue as if played by ghostly fingers.

“That’s so stupid!” I say.

“Don’t they think I’ll notice that?”

My husband gives me a wicked smile and says, “Maybe it’s for COVID-safety.”

It’s going to be a long night.

THE BACK ROAD

A look back at value of early relationships

n Oct. 27 I was inducted into my high school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. I was so pleased that a number of my childhood friends and teammates were in attendance.

We were a tight group growing up together more than 60 years ago.

It was a challenge to encapsulate what life felt like for me so long ago and to tie my childhood past to the ensuing years.

While my remarks that night were designed for my old friends, I also wanted to deliver a meaningful message to the hundreds more who attended the dinner. Following is a condensed version of what I said: “Being notified that I was to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame was a wonderful surprise.

I was flattered to be named in the all-around category. It’s true that I wrestled and played lacrosse in high school and college, as well as rugby for some years thereafter; but I think it is fair to say that I have been most closely identified with football at Columbia High School (Maplewood, N.J.) and then at Rutgers University.

“I moved to Maplewood from Newark in 1961. I was the new kid in the fifth-grade class at Clinton Elementary School. I didn’t know anybody, but I was fortunate to have been accepted by a great group of kids who became my lifelong friends. We had so much fun in the schoolyard playing every sport and game imaginable.

“I can still visualize us hopping the fence to Underhill Field to watch the high school football team practice. Who knew that in no time at all, a few of us would practice on the same field, sweating it out in the late-August heat?

“But, back to the schoolyard; nothing we did could be called organized sports. There were no grown-ups to tell us what to do or how to do it, we just figured it out as we went along. Whoever showed up was included. We even organized games against kids from other schools, sometimes in other towns. We planned and networked well and none of us had an MBA. “My introduction to more organized sports was when I was 10 years old. I signed up for a wrestling clinic in town. Bear in mind,

the only wrestling I was aware of then, was what I watched on television on Saturday nights. Those were the days when Bruno Sammartino ruled.

“I knew nothing of freestyle wrestling. I thought the wrestling clinic would be the same as on TV. I couldn’t wait to apply a “suplex” on some kid. When I was given my first chance, I grabbed a folding chair to strike my adversary, just like on TV. Someone snatched it from me before I could do any damage and said, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Years later, by the time I joined the high school team, I understood it was a different kind of wrestling. What I wasn’t prepared for was the strong odor in the wrestling room with thirty or so teenage boys sweating profusely in a closed area, some wearing rubber suits to cut weight and the heat turned all the way up. Not even a Kryptonite folding chair could beat back that wall of body odor.

“It’s funny, but when I think back, I remember the practices more than the games or matches.

Those were moments together with no fanfare when we bonded.

Football practice in the summer heat before the start of school was brutal.

The morning after the first day of full-contact, every inch of my body ached. Some guys dropped out after that. Who could blame them? It was a war of attrition.

“My first year on the junior varsity team our coaches were Coach C. and Coach L. — good cop and bad cop. Coach L. was a screamer who bullied and taunted us. He dared anyone to knock him off the two-man sled during tack-

ling drills. He would situate himself atop the back of the sled, gripping the two iron posts, whistling each guy to take a turn tackling the sled.

“One practice, I carefully observed his body language after each guy hit the sled. I saw that he relaxed momentarily before he whistled the next guy to go. When my turn came, I didn’t wait for his whistle; I timed it to hit the sled when his body was at rest and I sent him flying in the air and flat on his ass. Needless to say, it was a cathartic moment for the team.

Support a New York state ban on neonics

W

hile all pesticides are damaging to the environment, Neonicotinoids (neonics) are particularly insidious. The neonics are a class of several related pesticides that have been implicated in deaths of honeybees and the ongoing insect armageddon.

Because of this, several have been banned in Europe and some U.S. states. Bills have been introduced in the New York State Senate and Assembly, The Birds and Bees Protection Act (A7429Englebright/S699B-Hoylman) which will ban neonic-treated corn, soybean, and wheat seeds and non-agricultural, turf and ornamental uses.

Neonics are primarily used as seed coatings — almost all corn and soybeans receive this treatment. That might sound safe, but as the seed grows, the toxic compounds travel through the plant into the pollen, nectar, and sap.

They can also migrate into the surrounding soil and water, spreading the contamination.

The plants poison bees, other

insects and birds that consume their pollen and nectar.

Additionally, neonics applied to the root zone of trees or injected into tree trunks can remain at toxic concentrations for three or more years.

Another avenue of contamination is home gardens — neonic treated plants are sold in many nurseries. With more bees and pollinating insects relying on home gardens as open space diminishes, insects are increasingly coming into contact with neonics.

New York beekeepers lost over half of their hives last year, and that suggests similar losses for our 400 species of native bees. This threatens the state’s ecosystems and pollination to crops like apples, squash, tomatoes, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and pears.

The paradox is that insecticides to prevent insect damage to crops are killing the pollinators necessary for production of a third of fruit and vegetables in our grocery stores.

Since neonics were introduced in the 1990s, research has

linked them to declines in U.S. bird species.

Eating just one neonic-treated seed is enough to kill some songbirds, and even at low doses, they can harm birds’ immune systems, fertility, and navigation, and cause rapid weight loss, reducing birds’ survival and reproduction. Neonics kill the insects that many bird species rely on for food.

Neonic contamination of water is harming fish and other wildlife. Neonics show up in 30% of Long Island groundwater testing samples, indicating a

“very high probability” that the pesticides are causing “ecosystem-wide damage.”

Neonics kill aquatic insects that birds, fish, amphibians, and other animals depend upon for food. Neonic water contamination has also been linked to harm to bats and birth defects in white-tailed deer. Diminished trout, salmon, and wild bird populations threaten New York’s ecosystems and the tourism and recreation industries that depend on them.

These chemicals travel through the food web to us, with neonic residues found in common foods including kid’s favorites like apples, cherries, honey, and strawberries. The residues are within fruits and vegetables and are not removed by washing or peeling.

In studies of human exposure, developmental or neurological effects may include malformations of the developing heart and brain, autism spectrum disorder, and a cluster of symptoms including memory loss and finger tremors.

In a June 2020 report, Cor-

nell University analyzed every published peer-reviewed study, 1,121 studies in total, on neonics harm to pollinators and the costs and benefits of neonics compared to alternatives.

The study revealed that the state’s largest and most harmful neonic uses provide little to no benefits to users or are easily replaceable with safer alternatives.

The report found that neonic corn and soybean seed treatments which account for an estimated 73% of the neonics use in New York agriculture, posed “substantial” risks to bees and other pollinators, yet provide “no overall net income benefits” to farmers.

Other research shows that neonics can actually reduce yields by killing pollinators and good bugs.

Biden backs praise of veterans with actions

A

ll too often, especially in the Trump years, veterans and active military have been used as props and as pawns to achieve personal and political gain.

Trump demeaned Sen. John McCain’s heroism as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and later called those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, “losers and suckers” and repeatedly questioned the intelligence of those who serve.

Well before Joe Biden became President, he and First Lady Jill Biden were activists on behalf of the military, veterans and military families. As Second Lady, Jill Biden teamed with then-First Lady Michelle Obama to create Joining Forces — the White House initiative to support veteran and military families, caregivers, and survivors — to solve many of the problems that military families and veterans face.

I often have problems each Veterans Day and Memorial Day because these events shroud the horrors of war in glory and flag-waving jingoism – a kind of bait-and-switch necessary because otherwise no one would answer the call to duty.

And I have often warned about the difference between a convenient war and a justified one: lying the nation into war as George W. Bush did to invade Iraq for glory and oil and Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon did during Vietnam; using war for political gain, as Reagan did in invading Grenada, or how Trump actually maneuvered to use the military to keep power, even frightening General Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, to

caution the chain of command about deploying nuclear weapons.

All too often, the Commander in Chief just hangs in because it is politically inconvenient to leave, as in Afghanistan, where despite broad support for ending the unending war, the inevitable messiness wounded Biden’s presidency.

And then there are the wars being used by callous business interests to make their fortune, like World War I. But then, there is a justified war like World War II, and no question that the nation must have a strong defense and be vigilant.

Yes, too often soldiers are props in a photo op or pawns in some political chess game, and the words used to honor them are hollow. The idea of preserving democracy at home and abroad is dangled and the flag waved.

War, after all, is a rallying cry and anyone who questions is attacked as being unpatriotic. And the millions who have served this country to protect our democracy have to feel cheated to see democracy hanging by a thread.

This Veterans Day, Biden’s Proclamation is genuine and speaks to this administration’s commitment to veterans and families, backed by real action.

“For generations, millions of Americans have answered the call to serve — taking the sacred oath to defend and preserve our Nation’s ideals of liberty and democracy. These patriots represent the best of us. On Veterans Day, we honor their service, dedication, and

valor and are forever grateful for their sacrifice,” he states.

“Our Nation has only one truly sacred obligation: to properly prepare and equip our service members when we send them into harm’s way and to care for them and their families when they return home. For our 19 million veterans, that means ensuring that they have access to the support and resources for a future of security, opportunity, and dignity. This is even more important as we continue to recover from the global COVID-19 pandemic.”

He has brought a whole-ofgovernment approach to veterans, making veterans fundamental to major policy, from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act just passed that will create millions of good jobs for veterans and grow opportunities for veteran-owned businesses and The Build Back Better framework which prioritizes improvements to VA health care, to addressing the adverse health effects of service-related exposures, the White House Gender Policy Council releasing the first-ever United States

Strategy for Gender Equity and Equality that considered the special needs and contributions of women service members and veterans.

Notably, the Department of Veterans Affairs is also working to get every eligible veteran the information and opportunity they need to register and vote, “protecting their voice in the democracy they fought to preserve.”

In August, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it will begin processing disability claims for respiratory conditions connected to exposure during military service in Southwest Asia and other areas. The Biden Administration also added three conditions to the list of those associated with exposure to Agent Orange and will be taking additional action to address potential adverse health effects associated with military environmental exposures.

But probably the most critical aspect of Biden’s attention to veterans is addressing the psychological effects of their service that has manifested in high rates of suicide and homelessness.

“So many of our veterans carry the scars from their service — both visible and invisible — and it is our Nation’s responsibility to help them heal.

Too many veterans and service members have considered suicide or taken their own lives, and addressing this tragedy is a national responsibility,” he stated. The Biden administration released a new comprehensive, cross-sector public health strategy to reduce military and veteran suicide.

Through Joining Forces, the Administration is addressing employment and entrepreneurship, military and veteran child education, and health and wellbeing for veteran families. In September, Joining Forces and the National Security Council released a report outlining the first round of Administrationwide commitments and proposals that support veteran and military families, caregivers, and survivors.

“Fulfilling our Nation’s promise to our veterans and military families, caregivers, and survivors is not only a moral imperative — it is crucial to our national security and to maintaining the finest military the world has ever known. We are a Nation that keeps our promises. That is why my Administration is dedicated to a whole-of-government approach in responding to the needs of our veterans and their families, caregivers, and survivors,” Biden stated.

“On Veterans Day, we honor our Nation’s veterans, who have given so much to protect our freedoms and the freedom of others around the globe. They represent the highest ideals of our country. While we can never fully repay the debt we owe these heroes, we will honor their service and provide them the care and support they deserve. We also salute and show gratitude for all who ensure our Armed Forces remain strong, united, and unmatched I encourage all Americans to recognize the valor, courage, and sacrifice of our veterans through appropriate ceremonies and private prayers.”

know hospitals. I could not possibly count the number I have been in (since my Last Rites at Nyack in 1951 – and tonsils and appendectomy before that).

How fortunate are we on Long Island to have the exceptional Winthrop Langone!

Most recently I spent several days in ICU before Hospice care was set up for me at home by my marvelous family (including an adjustable hospital bed, and support from therapists, social workers and

visiting nurses).

From nurses to aides, staff and doctors, celebrations of the Winthrop staff cannot be too high. Going back and forth in an ambulance showed the skill of the men and women who moved me with care.

At the hospital, I was concerned that I would misplace the nurse’s call button, and be unable to buzz for help. That did happen a few times, but I was able to call out to staff in hallways.

Throughout day and night staff members were close by for assistance and comfort.

During my last few days, Winthrop, like many hospitals, became increasingly crowded and I was moved out of iCU (more urgently needed for others). Luckily I was able to get a private room with a large sunset window (another comfort).

I wish I was able to note names of all the staff to thank them personally. They deserve more specific accolades

than this general praise.

Staff and doctors spoke extensively with me, my spouse, and family who flew to Long Island to spend time with me.

Now, being in a Home Hospice arrangement provides added comfort with lots of family support.

I want to emphasize to all Long Island folks how deserving Winthrop Langone is of your support and recognition.

We have in our midst a treasure for medical care.

Your first job is only the opening round

A

s a teen we stumble through school in a state of lassitude and laxity.

That is until we get our first job. The first job serves as a rude awakening and you quickly learn that cash is hard to make.

You’re about to be tamed and tempered. You may be a teenager of perhaps 14 or 15 and are told to get off the couch, stop being so lazy and make yourself useful.

In days of old, you might get yourself a paper route as Thomas Wolfe did when he was 14. Those were the days when newspapers and magazines thrived. Wolfe writes about this first job with pride and some pain, getting up at 4:30 a.m. and carrying that heavy bag from home to home down in Asheville. He stuck with the newspaper and publishing business for a lifetime.

Your first job is your first taste

of freedom and it will often tell you exactly what you do not want to do in life. When I was 16, my first job was working in my father’s factory, pushing a pipe threading machine that spit out burning oil and a foul smell as it bore threads into pipes and converted pipes into a variety of expensive plumbing supplies. I did this for two weeks over Christmas to buy a new kangaroo skin golf bag I had my eye on. I earned the necessary $75, took the cash over to Spencer Murphy’s pro shop at Glen Oaks Country Club and bought my golf bag. Hard earned money indeed, but a good education in what I did not want to do as a career.

My next job was the following summer when my father arranged for me and my older brother to work for Restaurant Associates at the 1965 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows. I sold Italian ices.

by John Kennedy and then by Lyndon Johnson and was designed to foster American dominance as we waged the cold war with Russia. All I knew was that selling so many rock-hard Italian ices made my hands so numb and cramped that I couldn’t use them for hours afterwards.

The iconic 12-story-high, 700,000-pound steel Unisphere still stands proud and tall, in the middle of Flushing Meadow, representing the 1965 vision of the future with those three orbiting satellites and signifying “peace through understanding.”

That job came to an end in late summer and as I gave my two weeks’ notice to my manager, Mr. Gore, his response was,“So what do you want me to do about it?”

Again, I took this as subtle but powerful encouragement to fur-

ther my education so that I might never work in the food industry again.

Soon after upon entering college, I noticed that one of the big men on campus was Kurt Dorfi, a Division I basketball giant, who had the fine looking red MGTF. Those were the sports cars with running boards and the tire on the back trunk, like the one in “Two for the Road” with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. So for the next summer it was caddying and working afternoons at UPS unloading trucks. And by the end of summer, I had enough to buy the car from Kurt and I established myself as big little man on campus.

However, the illusory meaning of life was not to be found in a kangaroo golf bag or in a red MGTF. After graduating from college, I tried the corporate route for a bit, working an entry level position at IBM but knew that my calling was not in corporate America. My calling was to be a psychoanalyst working with athletes and teams.

I’m not sure where this calling comes from, but I think we all hear that faint whisper imploring us to go in a certain direction in life. It is like geese in the fall that hear the calling to go south. They don’t know much about how to get there, but they all seem to muster up enough courage to take flight.

Many an author has told us to listen to this call. Jack London put the calling into his wolf dog Buck in “Call of the Wild.” And at the end we watched as brave fearless

Buck ran into the woods to be with his wolf pack.

And in “The Stolen Child” Yeats wrote:“Come away, O human child!To the waters and the wildwith a faery, hand in hand,For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.”

Yeats is telling us to go forth into the “waters and the wild” to find happiness and meaning.

In “Look Homeward, Angel” Thomas Wolfe wrote “waken, ghost-eared boy, but into darkness.

Waken, phantom, O into us. Try, try, O try the way. Open the wall of light.” He tells himself to awaken and go forth in the darkness to find his destiny.

All the world-class golfers and soccer players and tennis stars and rugged rugby players and tiny jockeys and pretty warrior-like figure skaters I work with have listened to the call. Abraham Maslow said that on the very top of the pyramid are those he called “self-actualized” people or those who have used all their talents and capabilities.

“Follow your bliss” is the way the famed mythologist Joseph Campbell put it. Your first job will often be an anti-calling, containing no bliss at all. Furthermore, most of the jobs you have in your 20s will be missteps and misdirection. But pay no mind to that. They serve as biofeedback telling you to change course. So keep your ears and eyes open, follow your heart and soon enough you will find the right path, that special call of the wild and off you’ll run.

Breaking! Gulotta re-elected as county exec

olor me shocked, along with everyone else, but this election was surely something else. Then again, it may just be the same old “pendulum” politics we’ve been dealing with for years, where the losing party, good and mad, musters the turnout to “throw the bums out.” Next time, the bums who won will be turned out.

Before we get to the local aspect, I have to say I’m surprised at the New Jersey gubernatorial result.

While it looks like Gov. Murphy has won, he should have crushed his mediocre opponent.

Murphy handled the COVID crisis with decency and circumspection. unlike the insufferable narcissism of our own governor.

Nobody in politics signs up for leading through a murderous cri-

sis, but he demonstrated a formidable grasp of the situation he was handed, and to the shame of the voters, they could only revile him.

You won’t get good people to serve in office if the voters themselves are hate-filled zombies, but this is where the country is.

This is no longer a nation whose electoral politics can be taken seriously.

Nassau, as always, provided the comedy. Oddly, enough, despite the sound of a 1,000 dog whistles, and slathering the police with endless praise and gobs of taxpayer money, Laura Curran apparently did a bad job of summoning up nativist fears.

And so, a man who has been in a fixture (in the sense of say, a desk lamp) in Nassau politics for decades is promising a real shakeup. All through the campaign, he

promised he would fix the assessment system, which in his view, was “broken.” As it turns out, he doesn’t know exactly how.

“I’m going to put together a team and fix the broken reassessment system and make proposals to further cut fees and taxes and restore law and order on Nassau County streets,” Blakeman said in a statement.

Uh-huh. I’m sure a team of well-compensated NIFA retreads and a few nephews will get to the bottom of a problem no one else seems to have figured out for 50 years.

I would have thought it would have made sense for Mr. Blakeman to know precisely how he was going to fix the “broken assessment system” before he got elected, but I figured if he told us how he was going to do it, he would have to kill

us. Now he’s getting a “team.”

Blakeman is right about restoring law and order on the “streets.”

His old friend Ed Mangano, despite being convicted twice, is still walking on them. What racist claptrap, and so openly and brazenly expressed.

The Nassau County political establishment can only pander to the worst instincts in society, and that is precisely why decent good public servants can work their hearts out and get defeated. It also drives decent people out of the profession. Look what you’re left with.

“This party made promises concerning reassessment,” Blakeman said. “We made promises about cutting taxes. We made promises about law and order.

And now it’s our job to fulfill those promises.”

Yeah, I’m sure you will, pal. I’m

just going to sit here and wait and see what the “team” kicks up.

In the meantime, congrats, Nassau. You elected members of the party of Holocaust denial, insurrection, and the open carry of guns, while they unctuously lecture you on the “values” of an ordered society and a decent education. You got what you deserved.

Locally, this doesn’t mean much. Nassau politics, at the bottom, consists of two rival crime families squaring off for turf, and after the OTB and Board of Elections slots are filled, everyone can go back to sleep.

If the national GOP takes power, however, I suggest emigrating.

Fundraising for awareness

Herricks board honored for service In honor of School Board Recognition Week, the Herricks Public Schools Board of Education was presented with special honors at its Oct. 21 meeting. Students from Denton Avenue School performed

for the board and showcased a piece of handmade artwork that they created from a recycled cello, and Legislator Ellen Birnbaum presented the board with a Certificate of Recognition.

The annual Herricks DIG PINK night, held on Oct. 20, was a huge success. The event raised more than $2,000. All proceeds are donated to the Side-Out Foundation, which was established in 2004.

Dig Pink is the name of the breast cancer awareness rally that takes place in gymnasiums all over the country during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

Volleyball teams participated in this year’s event.

The gymnasium was a “Sea of Pink”, the spectators and team members were very enthusiastic in their support to “SPIKE OUT” breast cancer.

2 Herricks teachers earn educator awards The Herricks Public Schools are pleased to congratulate two valued faculty members who been recognized with the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator Awards. Herricks High School science teacher Caitlin Etri and social studies teacher Melissa Jacobs were nominated

by Herricks graduates who acknowledged the educators’ positive impacts on their lives and significant roles in their high school experiences.

Each year, newly admitted University of Chicago students

have the opportunity to reflect on their time in school and honor a teacher whose influence has brought them to where they are today. The University of Chicago noted in a letter that this year’s Outstanding Educator Award winners are exceptional in their field and role models for all students.

“The University deeply appreciates the lively minds who thirst for knowledge that these educators have nurtured and inspired,” the letter said. “We thank them for going above and

beyond the call of duty every day and leaving an impression that will be carried over a lifetime.”

A Language Immersion program student, Carolyn took the exam last May as a sophomore, two years earlier than what is typically expected.

Trevor Packer, the head of the Advanced Placement program, recently wrote to Carolyn that her performance was

so superior that it falls into an extremely select category.

Additionally, Carolyn is one of only 77 students out of more than 146,646 test-takers from around the world to earn every point possible on this challenging, college-level examination, which places her in the top 0.05%.

Herricks applauds Carolyn on her mastery of the content and skills of this AP course and wish her many future successes.

ganization, serves on the Board of Long Island History Day and is currently coordinating an international project with Taiwan.

She will be completing her doctoral studies at Northeastern University in Research and Curriculum this spring and is writing her dissertation on Global Civic Engagement through Cross Peer Collaboration.

Hochul signs Kaplan hate symbols bill

Legislation bans displays on public property of Confederate flags, other offensive signs

BY R OB E RT PELAEZ Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation proposed by state Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills) on Tuesday that prohibits symbols of hate from being displayed on public property and equipment funded by taxpayers in New York.

The legislation, introduced

by Kaplan in February, came after Confederate flags were displayed at the Levittown Fire Department Station 3 and on a firetruck during a parade in Suffolk County. The law, which immediately took effect on Tuesday, also prohibits the sale of symbols of hate on public property aside from educational or historical purposes.

“Symbols of hate have no use other than to spread ignorance and incite violence,” Hochul said in a statement. “As New Yorkers, we must remain united and actively fight to eradicate these attitudes, and this legislation bolsters those efforts. There is no reason for a symbol of hate

Aside from Confederate flags, other symbols of hate outlined in the law include those of white supremacy and neo-Nazi ideology. In June, Kaplan re-

ceived hate mail featuring an antisemitic reference in response to one of her mailers with information on the coronavirus vaccine.

The sender also wrote “109 soon 110,” a phrase the AntiDefamation League said is used by white supremacists referring to the number of countries that

have expelled Jews, implying the United States would be the 110th to do so. On Tuesday, Kaplan said now more than ever it is vital to eradicate symbols of hate on public property and taxpayer-funded equipment.

“With hate on the rise around the world and in our

own community, it’s more urgent than ever that we take action to eradicate it wherever we find it,” Kaplan said. “You would think it was common sense that taxpayer-owned property couldn’t be used as a platform for hate, but shockingly there was no law on the books saying so – until now.”

The North Shore is no stranger to having hate speech and symbols being displayed on public and private properties.

In April, two swastikas were spray-painted onto exterior walls at John Philip Sousa Elementary School in Port Washington. District Superintendent Michael Hynes said the district would work with the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Head to educate students on hate symbols.

District officials said they were working with the Nassau County Police Department and the district attorney’s office’s Hate Crime Units to find the perpetrator. Efforts to reach officials on the status of the investigation were unavailing.

Over 34 years, Nance participated in field and combat intelligence activity including acquiring experience as an Arabicspeaking special intelligence collections operator, field interrogator as well as providing both covert and clandestine anti and counter-terrorism support to national intelligence agencies and assets. A former Navy intelligence operator, he has eye-witnessed numerous terrorist incidents and/

or participated in response operations, and has trained and advised numerous international and government agency personnel in terrorist tactics and countering extremist ideology including the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Free church concert to benefit homeless

Ariann Miller will be a featured soloist at Nov. 21 concert

A free concert to benefit the homeless will be held Sun, Nov 21 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Roslyn, featuring folk, musical theatre and classic organ music.

In lieu of tickets, attendees are invited to donate a new or gently-used winter coat, for a joint program by Trinity Church and Salem AME Church, Roslyn, to benefit the homeless. Monetary donations also gratefully appreciated.

The concert will include performances

by Ariann Miller who will be singing standards and songs from musical theater, and Lawrell (Larry) Arnold, who will perform a classic organ repertoire.

Miller is also known for her theatrical work in Long Island productions such as South Pacific, Ragtime, Into The Woods and Hello Dolly. She studied voice at LI University- C.W. Post College and is currently the Choir Director at Trinity Church, as well as soprano soloist.

Larry Arnold has over 30 years of experience as a church organist and choirmaster. He has performed extensively as recitalist and soloist, and he has served in both Episcopal and Lutheran congregations in New York and New Jersey.

He is currently the interim organist at Trinity Church and is completing his dissertation at Graduate Theological Foundation.

Also performing are local musicians Diane Menzel, Helen Kotzky and Ken Bongort, who will play various folk music tunes on acoustic instruments, including guitar, flute and concertina.

Prior to COVID, Diane and Helen performed regularly as the “Sunshine Music Duo” at senior centers and libraries. They love to bring joy to others as they fill rooms

with music that entertains and engages audiences.

Ken plays and sings folk music at local gigs, accompanying himself on guitar, concertina or banjo. He is fascinated by the stories behind the songs and appreciates the inspiration they provide.

The Concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 1579 Northern Blvd, Roslyn, just east of the Roslyn Viaduct (516-621-7925). Masks are required regardless of vaccination status.

Please consider donating a coat, even if you can’t attend; coats can be dropped off at Trinity Church until Nov. 26.

Northwell in artificial intelligence venture Northwell Health, New York’s largest healthcare provider, and Aegis Ventures, a New York-based startup studio, today announced they are forming a joint venture that will ideate, launch, and scale AI-driven companies to address healthcare’s most challenging quality, equity, and cost problems.

The JV will assemble leading medical, technology, and business resources to create a first-of-its-kind company creation platform for healthcare innovation.

Aegis Ventures intends to invest at least $100 million of seed-stage funds through the platform to catalyze a significant multiple of that amount from the venture capital and investment community.

The JV will work with stakeholders across the Northwell system to create new patient care solutions through collaboration with frontline clinicians, working side-by-side from ideation to implementation, to develop innovations that use AI to predict, diagnose, and manage health conditions.

The parties have already started work on solutions related to improving maternal health outcomes and chronic disease prediction.

Alongside this disease focus, the JV will use AI to identify and eliminate operational inefficiencies in healthcare delivery. All technologies and tools will be identified, developed, and validated within the secure Northwell Health environment to maximize data integrity and privacy. Ultimately, the aim of the JV will be to accelerate the speed with which new lifesaving AI solutions reach the patient’s bedside.

“New York was at the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis, and today’s announcement places it at the epicenter of innovation that will tackle healthcare’s most pressing problems,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “This joint venture will leverage data from Northwell’s patient population, one of the most diverse in the world, along with Northwell’s intellectual capital in AI technology. Working together, Northwell and Aegis will create companies that bring higher quality, lower cost healthcare to those who need it most.”

Northwell has a track record of success in AI research, including the development of a landmark algorithm that predicts patients’ overnight stability to reduce the need to wake them for vital sign checks.

Developed using 26 million measurements from 2.3 million patient visits, the algorithm helps reduce nighttime disturbances to speed patients’

recovery and discharge. In addition, Northwell serves one of the most diverse patient populations in the United States. Caring for more than 2 million people annually across 23 hospitals and hundreds of other facilities provides the health system’s clinicians and researchers with a unique vantage point into the health and wellbeing of traditionally underserved communities.

This perspective will be a key aspect of the Northwell-Aegis JV, which will prioritize innovation to reduce racial and socioeconomic biases that drive health inequities and have impaired existing AI solutions.

Art of learning at Gold Coast Arts Center On Tuesday, Nov. 2, the not-for-profit Gold Coast Arts Center, located in Great Neck welcomed teachers from Saddle Rock Elementary School as they played the part of students at a unique Teacher Professional Development Day. Over 75 teachers spent the morning enjoying hands-on interactive ceramics workshops with renowned ceramics artist and longtime Gold Coast Arts faculty member, Jude Amsel. They learned about the many programs run by the Arts Center for students, teachers, families and adults.

Among these programs are Gold Coast’s customized arts education outreach initiatives developed in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts: Partners in Educa-

tion Program and the National Gallery of Art; and the Arts Center’s popular Art Gallery Tours which pair docent-guided walkthroughs of its gallery exhibits followed by handson art workshops.

The teachers also learned about the Arts Center’s scholarship program for talented and deserving students throughout the region. Teacher

Adopting IHRA’s definition of antisemitism

T

his fall, my hometown of Great Neck, New York was one of several Long Island communities that adopted the working IHRA definition of antisemitism.

With a concerning rise in antisemitic incidents in cities across the United States and university campuses, the IHRA definition is an incredibly useful tool to help city officials, law enforcement and academic administrations understand antisemitism, and undermine those who seek to seek to do harm and spread bigotry.

A few significant examples denoted by the IHRA definition include “Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion, accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews, or accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state,

and denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor”.

Although in my own personal experience, I am lucky that I have not been targeted by the disease of antisemitism growing up, I credit that to the high Jewish demographic of my hometown and Long Island as a whole.

As I got older and attended a university outside of local areas, I began to comprehend the existence of antisemitic notions often demonizing the state of Israel and misconstruing facts to illustrate self-motivated ideas regarding Israel’s self-defense.

Students for Justice Palestine, a group present at Binghamton announces on their website that they advocate for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions.

A campaign that targets Jewish people’s rights to self-determination, a goal that directly violates IHRA guidelines. The quote states:

“This organization intends to campaign for boycotts, divestments, and sanctions against politicians, institutions, and corporations that support Zionism and fund the State of Israel.”

A recent bipartisan U.S. House of Representatives resolution stated that BDS “leads to the intimidation and harassment of Jewish students and others who support Israel.”

The fact that age-old antisemitism is currently featured on a Binghamton-affiliated student group is appalling, and such hate should be addressed immediately when it surfaces.

Furthermore, the letter stating that the US Department of State targets solely non-violent human rights campus organizations is almost contrary to reality.

To start, there have been countless instances of self-proclaimed human rights groups which unfairly use their power to pressure pro-Israel students on campus.

Shoe leather beats money in elections

R

epublican truck driver Edward Durr was David who defeated longtime Democrat New Jersey State Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney as Goliath in the 3rd Legislative District.

Four years earlier, Sweeney was easily re-elected by an 18-point margin despite the teachers union spending over $4 million to defeat him. Republican underdog Durr spent

less than $10,000 vs. Democrat Sweeney’s $1.06 million. Sweeney has served in the New Jersey State Senate as a member since 2002 and president of the Senate since January 2010.

This provided him with 19 years of name recognition, all the perks of holding public office along with endorsements and campaign contributions from all the pay-to-play special interest groups doing business

in Trenton. It was old-fashion shoe leather going door-to-door evenings and weekends by Durr knocking on over 20,000 doors that overcame the tremendous odds against his winning.

Investing in some good walking shoes carried the day for Durr. This is a lesson all firsttime underdog candidates could learn from.

For example, Students for Justice in Palestine, a national network of pro-Palestinian support groups which spread anti-Israel propaganda often laced with provocative rhetoric, has repeatedly illustrated their willingness to demonize Zionism and harass proIsrael activists.

At an SJP-sponsored event in March 2018 at Eastern Michigan University, a speaker claimed that “Zionism is a hateful, racist ideology.”.\ Additionally in March 2018, Columbia University’s JVP and SJP groups featured ardent antiIsrael speaker Steven Salaita, parroting the same rhetoric alleging that “racist violence is based on the ideology” of Zionism.

Furthermore, in May 2019, SJP at Brandeis University vandalized a Hillel a rt seminar for Israel’s Independence Day with the phrase “Free Palestine.” These are some of the thousands of incidents that portray supposed human rights

groups using their influence to repeatedly target pro-Israel and pro-Zionist activists. The attempts to equate plain harassment and demonization of students supporting Israel truly demonstrate the necessity of the newly established IHRA definition of antisemitism.

In conclusion, we as representatives of free speech on campus have a responsibility to protect it when it becomes threatened. Unfortunately, it is abundantly clear that antisemitism incidents on campus have risen tremendously, reaching an all-time high in 2019.

As clearly illustrated above, powerful student groups are unfairly demonizing pro-Israel activists.

Thus, our response, as future leaders of democracy, should be to put our support behind the new working IHRA definition of antisemitism. By doing so, we will build a path toward healthy and productive discourse.

Considering Time, Daylight Savings It’s time to reset the clock again—thought it’s not an emergency to do so—for an hour that does not yet exist but will soon have passed, among other hours that no longer exist in the mere present but remain strongly felt.

Before reality slowly returns to normal, I wonder, how many more years like this?

Will we be much better off, or worse than now, if we don’t undertake to make the change?

In the long dense silence the stars still shine as in the past.

I search for the words to describe the mystery of time…

Until the sun comes up and begins to move my heart for another transition, when I no longer consider it relevant or important.

And, given the time, maybe I will quietly go along and follow the bliss. Then again, it gets late early now.

Town, county elections Blakeman, confident raise many questions of win, eyes agenda Continued from Page 14 But from the day his nomination was announced, Nassau Republicans attacked his role in the botched rollout of muchneeded bail reform in the state.

As we have said, the state’s bail system was in real need of reform, sending tens of thousands of people to jail charged with nonviolent infractions for the crime of being poor and unable to afford bail. Lost were jobs, families and lives.

But the legislation had two serious flaws. It went too far by removing discretion from judges for too many crimes and was included in the state budget by Senate Democrats where it was subject to far too little scrutiny and input from prosecutors.

The law was revised several months later to increase judicial discretion.

Ann Donnelly, who has spent 32 years in the Nassau County district attorney’s office, throughout the campaign claimed that Kaminsky was the father of bail reform and that it led to deaths at the hands of people released by the new law.

This was not true, but apparently politically effective. Donnelly led by more than 20 points on election night.

Kaminsky did not help his cause by appearing defensive on his role and never making the argument for why bail reform was needed.

Until they come up with a better response, Democratic legislators on Long Island and beyond could face serious election losses in the future.

It is also possible that the impact of bail reform aided Elaine Phillips in her victory for county comptroller and maybe even Blakeman in his race against County Executive Laura Curran.

Even though Nassau was the country’s safest community by U.S. News and World Report two years in a row.

The county also had 95 percent of its adults vaccinated with at least one shot and finally offered a balanced budget after years of failing to do that.

But one of Curran’s successes – a countywide reassessment that for the first

time in a decade brought property values in line with their worth – proved to be very unpopular with many voters.

This is the result of Curran fixing a system in which two-thirds of the property owners were underpaying their taxes.

During the campaign, Blakeman said he would “scrap Curran’s reassessment plan entirely and start fresh.”

In an interview with Newsday, Blakeman pulled back on that promise and said he has already asked Phillips to conduct an audit on the assessment system and would consider a new reassessment.

Blakeman also declined to commit to eliminating or sharply reducing county fees that Republican legislators approved last month – only to be voted by Curran as fiscally irresponsible.

He was the head of a Republican-controlled County Legislature in 2000 when Nassau required state assistance to balance his budget. So perhaps he has learned his lesson – and feels free to say so after the election.

We also hope he shows similar resolve when the Legislature revises the legislative districts to ensure that communities are not divided and minorities who make up 44 percent of the population are fairly represented.

The race for North Hempstead supervisor focused on fixing the town Building Department.

The Democrat, Wayne Wink, had a long history in town and county government and a plan to address the Building Department and other aspects of North Hempstead’s government.

But he lost to political newcomer Jen DeSena, who called for changes in the Building Department but with few specifics.

It is unclear what DeSena’s victory along with the victories by political newcomers Ragini Srivastava and David Adhami running for town clerk and town council, respectively, means.

Other than Dennis Walsh won’t be lonely at North Hempstead board meetings.

Barsky told Newsday he intends to work with Blakeman “with a lot of respect” and said Nassau is in a “relatively good shape based on one-time resources” coming from the federal government due to the coronavirus pandemic and refinancing debt.

Blakeman said he is “fairly certain” that he will bring on new staff members in various county departments, but said he will not choose his staff based on party allegiance. He touted the need to have quality and competent employees work in the government to help effectively serve Nassau’s residents.

“I have to assemble a team that I’m comfortable with,” he said. “So I’m sure there’ll be quite a few changes, but that doesn’t mean that it will be a wholesale change across the board.”

Blakeman, who received 135,842 votes compared with Curran’s 124,008 as of Tuesday, thanked those who voted for him and said he looks forward to serving them and the residents who did not vote for him.

“I want to make you proud that I’m your county executive whether you voted for me or not,” he said. “I don’t look at people whether they’re Republican, Democrat, independent, or Conservative. I look at people as to whether or not they have problems that they need solved and my job is to try and help them solve those problems.”

Scheuerman said the Board of Elections will not begin counting the outstanding absentee ballots until next week.

Hochul signs bill to ban hate symbols in public Continued from Page 20 In October 2020, swastika graffiti was sprayed on the Port Washington Police Athletic League’s clubhouse. Officials said vandals allegedly broke into the building, stole a can of red spray paint, and sprayed 12 swastikas on its walls, equipment and offices.

The incident, officials said, was being investigated as a hate crime by the Port Washington Police District. Efforts to reach law enforcement for an update on that investigation were unavailing.

In October 2019, a pair of swastikas were found on the grounds of the Nassau County Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center. One was spray-painted in red on a tree and another on a rock, ac-

companied by the name “Tommy.” Efforts to reach law enforcement officials on the status of the investigation were unavailing.

“Public property belongs to all of us, and this measure is critical to ensure that our public property isn’t being used to promote hatred,” Kaplan said. “I’m grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for signing this measure into law and for her leadership to ensure that hate has no place in our state.”

Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center is always seeking new, improved options for cardiac patients, which is why the hospital’s cardiac team is involved in a clinical trial to determine the safety and effectiveness of a device designed to replace a faulty tricuspid valve in the heart through a minimally invasive procedure.

The TRISCEND II Pivotal Trial is evaluating the Edwards EVOQUE tricuspid valve replacement system. The device replaces a regurgitant—leaky—tricuspid heart valve through a minimally invasive procedure, where a small incision in the leg is made to access the heart and perform the procedure.

Tricuspid regurgitation occurs when the heart’s tricuspid valve does not fully close.

The condition occurs typically when the valve has dilated or stretched, and its leaflets do not shut tightly.

As a result, blood flows backward within the heart, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath with activity and swelling in the abdomen, legs or veins in the neck.

The St. Francis team taking part in the trial is led by the director of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures and co-director of the Heart Valve Center George Petrossian, and chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Newell Robinson.

The hospital’s participation in the trial is made possible through its Master Research Agreement with Edwards Lifesciences.

To date, two patients have been treated at St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center.

Petrossian and Robinson said the EVOQUE valve gives cardiologists an option for treating TR and provides patients with faster recovery times compared to open-heart surgery.

“Participating in the TRISCEND II Pivotal Trial allows us to be at the forefront in the use of new technology and an advance in treatment,” said Petrossian. “The results from our initial patients have been very promising and over time the new valve could provide many patients a solution that will allow them to live a long and healthy life.”

“This valve allows us to treat a serious heart condition in a way that is much less invasive to the patient,” Robinson said. “This will also mean shorter hospital stays and recovery times for patients.”

Adelphi professor launches cryptocurrency An Adelphi University professor has launched a cryptocurrency aimed at fighting censorship and promoting free speech.

FreeSpeech.Finance last week launched its meme coin, known by the ticker SPEECH. The Binance Smart Chain cryptocurrency, which is available on the decentralized exchange PancakeSwap, donates transaction fees to organizations that defend freedom of speech.

The crypto made its first donation Sunday, sending the equivalent of $250 in Ethereum to The Foundation for Individual

Rights in Education, a non-profit and nonpartisan organization in the U.S. that defends students’ and faculty’s free speech at colleges and universities.

SPEECH was launched on Halloween this year in homage to Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious figure who introduced the first cryptocurrency Bitcoin on Halloween in 2008. The new free speech meme coin was created

by Mark Grabowski, an associate professor who teaches cyberlaw at Adelphi University on Long Island and authored a best-selling

textbook on cryptocurrencies.

He’s a strong advocate for freedom of speech having worked as a journalist and First Amendment lawyer prior to academia.

Grabowski hopes to capitalize on the growing popularity of cryptocurrency to promote free speech. Meme coins, in particular, have become all the rage of the cryptocurrency market lately, making investors wealthy and providing fodder for Elon Musk tweets and Saturday Night Live skits.

“With big tech and governments in-

Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation hosted a Pfizer Booster-Shot event on Thursday, Oct. 27, at India Home – A Center for Senior Care in Jamaica, New York.

At this event, registered nurses from Parker At Your Door, Parker’s Medical House Call Unit, provided boosters for older adults, who would have otherwise found it difficult to travel on their own to receive the COVID-19 booster shot.

Eye home as if you were the buyer

usually convey this information to all of my client sellers when they are considering putting their home on the market.

There are a multitude of reasons for understanding the concerns and attitudes of their current and future purchasers. Many times sellers don’t realize or aren’t aware of how a buyer(s) may view their home and how particular they may be when analyzing all there is to know when making their purchase in the current market where home prices have excelled to the highest level in history.

This has been the norm over the last number of years dating back to 1987. I had mentioned this in a previous column when I ran for the Town of North Hempstead supervisor against Ben Zwirn, John Kiernan and the Right to Life candidate. Back then in Manhasset, I told a large congregation of people that the “brain drain” was happening and that so many were leaving New York for more affordable states and that something needed to be done, but as usual, it fell on deaf ears. Prices were even two to three times low-

er then than today for a similar four-bedroom, two-bath home!

Right now with all that has been going on with the pandemic the last 18 months, it has exacerbated the exodus from large populated cities by families and individuals who want more open space, privacy, etc. They are more health and safety-conscious than ever, draining our city population to go to less congested areas to homes with more interior space to enable people to work remotely.

This has been a huge selling factor for homes that have additional rooms for office space in 2020, as well as space for children, when schools were closed and classes were done via computer.

The pace at which people have exited New York City since March 2020 has been 425,000plus and high as well. Other crowded cities have been greatly affected due to Covid-19 as well as the Delta Variant adding insult to injury and the 753,926 U.S. deaths as of Nov. 4, 2021, in the U.S., adding to the 5.05 million who have died globally.

So, sellers, you must be even more critical than your eventual purchaser, who with their home inspector will usually find things that will cause the potential renegotiating of the previous agreed

and accepted sales price. To avert and avoid this from happening, I suggest that if your home is at least 20 years old that you have a pre-inspection completed by either a home inspector or engineer. Have them go over your entire home from the roof, chimney, (whether it needs pointing or new flashing to prevent leaks), gutters and leaders, right down to your basement, e.g., all the utilities, electrical service breaker panel and wiring, the heating (boiler and hot water heater), and the plumbing. Also, all your built-in appliances, including your refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer should also be checked.

The exterior condition of your home, including your windows, structural integrity of walls and foundation, landscape, patios, decks and sidewalks will also come into play in your pre-inspection. It is extremely critical to repair those items in advance when it will be less costly to take care of them than waiting until your buyer finds those items. Invariably, buyers will reduce your price by more than it will cost you, if you aren’t proactive in your approach in taking care of those most important items.

Although demand is still historically strong with very low inventory and interest rates, it still would make a lot of sense as a homeowner to order a preinspection. The report that will accompany it will detail all the good things about your home and all those items that will either need fixing and/or upgrading that are within your current affordable budget. Otherwise it just might cost you much more later on, when your future buyer does their inspection and adds up those needed repairs and wants to change their offer.

But then again, some homeowners will just sell in “as is” condition and take their chances for the best outcome.

Former GCP water commish runs again

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Former Garden City Park Water and Fire Commissioner Alan Cooper is looking to take back his post on Dec. 14, running against Commissioner Chris Engel.

Cooper, a Garden City Park native who served as Garden City Park’s water commissioner in the late 1990s and early 2000s, said that rising water rates and stagnation drove him to run for his old post.

In 2019, Cooper ran for and lost the same position to current Commissioner Kenneth Borchers.

Cooper touted his experience and resume, which includes replacing outdated emergency vehicles, including two new ambulances, and rebuilding the district’s fire headquarters. For water, he said he led the effort to replace outdated mains in the district, all while keeping taxes low and, in his first year, reducing the water tax rate.

“Since I left office, I feel this progress has stalled and the district is not keeping up with the changing landscape of both fire and water services,” Cooper said in an interview. “The current board has become complacent and it’s time for

The Garden City Park Water District covers parts of Garden City Park, Manhasset Hills, parts of New Hyde Park, parts of Mineola, parts of North Hills, parts of Roslyn, parts of Williston Park, parts of Albertson and parts of Garden City.

The commissioner will serve a threeyear term from Jan. 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2024. District residents vote for one of the three commissioner positions each

year.

Cooper is focusing on water rates, which the board voted to increase approximately 60 percent over two years, a sign he said of little long-term strategic planning.

“When I was on the board, we would strategically plan our infrastructure upgrades so we could estimate funding we would need in the future,” Cooper said.

Recently, Long Island drinking water was found to have emerging contaminants linked to cancer as part of New York’s updated water quality standards.

Cooper said the board went to the town for a $30 million bond, which it received.

A waiver was then put in, Cooper said, to delay the implementation of updated infrastructure to abide by new regulations in order to remove the contaminants.

“I was faced with a similar situation regarding nitrates,” Cooper said.

“We were able to successfully treat the groundwater to make it safe for our residents to drink. The current board lacks this experience and expertise.”

In a 2020 bond report, the board detailed needs involving capital improvements in support of its petition for bond financing. The eight recommended capi-

Individuals whose information was obtained by the hackers during the September ransomware attack will be notified by the district, according to Passi.

“Our preliminary review has identified some former and current employees who have been impacted and the first wave of notification letters are being processed now,” Passi said. “These individuals will receive a letter by U.S. mail that will contain a credit monitoring code for their use.”

As the team of data miners accesses more files, more individuals will receive notifications from the district. Passi said the district is also working with its retiree association and posted all letters regarding updates on the investigation to its website. Some retired district employees, he said, were included in the first wave of notifications.

Last month, district officials warned Manhasset students who held or shared files posted online by hackers that they could face disciplinary action. Files posted on the dark web ranged from documentation of disciplinary actions, student gradebooks, general staff information and financial records.

Also posted online were files containing Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, passports, student grades and home addresses. In a previous email, the district committed to providing complimentary credit monitoring for affected individuals.

Acting Superintendent Gaurav Passi said the Manhasset school district continues to recover from a September ransomware attack.

“The intrusion into our network was deep, the files stolen were voluminous, and some files contain sensitive information regarding certain students or staff,” Passi wrote in a previous email to the district. “We share your outrage about this

invasion of privacy.”

Cybersecurity experts said the district’s ransomware attack is not an isolated incident, as universities and school districts have become targets for extortion.

Cooper said he has been a resident of the Garden City Park district his entire life. He has been a member of the Fire Department for 40 years, and in addition to commissioner, he has served as rescue captain and engine lieutenant, and currently serves as captain of Engine Company 4.

Cooper is the associate dean of the Willumstad School of Business at Adelphi University and the owner of a consulting firm specializing in process improvement and organizational development.

“With all the changes and challenges facing our community, I have the experience, educational and professional background needed to provide a pure and plentiful water supply, and fire and EMS services second to none,” Cooper said.

“What we’re actually noticing in research is that there is a business cycle starting to emerge with this,” said Scott Jeffreys, associate professor of computer science at Hofstra University. “Right now is a very hot time for cybercriminals to be launching these kind of spear phishing attacks against organizations.”

The most common method of cyberattack is spear phishing, where individuals might not question the source of an email and inadvertently disclose credentials, allowing bad actors to log into the computer network, Jeffreys said. Even with good training, employees can fall victim to convincing communications.

“The whole purpose of an attack like this is to create panic,” Jeffreys said. “The greater the value of the mined assets, in this case passports, driver’s licenses, private information, the more value that might have on the dark web of the internet for a resale, or the more embarrassment it may create for the school district to encourage them to potentially pay more quickly.”

Passi said the district is working to improve cybersecurity measures so the information of students and staff can be better protected. The district, he said, continues to cooperate with investigations by the Nassau County Homeland Security Department and the FBI, along with other state and federal agencies.

my sea partner,” she said. “They were like animals, drinking straight out of the bottles of liquor, doing shot after shot, being extremely annoying, yelling and laughing and making a lot of noise, and practically shoving shots down our throats.”

As she continued drinking, the cadet said, her sea partner became sick and was taken back to his room. The cadet said she blacked out shortly after, taking roughly another 8 to 10 shots of alcohol.

The next morning, she woke up naked in her bed with a massive hangover and noticed blood on her sheets.

“I knew immediately that I had been raped,” the cadet said. “I was a virgin and had been saving myself, and as soon as I woke up I could feel that I was very sore and knew exactly what had happened.”

Republican voters, Levy said, “were energized in the form of the Tea Party as a push back against Obamacare spending and liberals … were disappointed in Obama for not spending enough.”

Curran, he said, was the most recent victim of having national headwinds impact the local races. Levy cited recent decreases in approval ratings for President Joe Biden and the abrupt end of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s tenure as possible reasons more voters sided with Republican candidates.

The issues of reassessment and property taxes, two key pillars of Blakeman’s campaign for county executive, along with the hot topic of bail reform, which Donnelly used against Kaminsky, were some of the most powerful platforms for challengers to run on against their incumbent opponents.
