Jim Brown gets hall of fame honor Manhasset native cited for high school achievements in sports BY C H R I S A DA M S The football legend Jim Brown will be adding another sports honor, as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced his induction into its Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements at Manhasset Secondary School. This year’s class includes six honorees for their achievements in playing, coaching and administration, according to the association. During Brown’s time in high school, the future Cleveland Brown lettered 13 times, in football, baseball, basketball, track and field, and lacrosse. He was recognized for his accomplishments in various sports as a student, including the 1952 Thorp Award for most outstanding football player in Nassau County, and two Newsday All-Scholastic Honors for basketball, all in the same year. As a basketball player, Brown averaged 38 points per game, according to a news release
from the association. Brown went on to play football and lacrosse at Syracuse University. As a running back and kicker in a 1956 football game against Colgate, Brown set a NCAA record by scoring 43 points, via six touchdowns and seven extra points, according to the sports website Orange Hoops. He also led the lacrosse team to a 10-0 season, after which the rules were changed because of his performance, requiring players to keep their stick moving at all times when in possession of the ball. In 1957, Brown was signed by the Cleveland Browns, where he was named NFL Rookie of the Year, and as a running back went on to become rushing champion for eight years. Brown was selected for the Pro Bowl nine times and took the Browns to their 1964 NFL championship win. Brown played his last season for the Browns in 1965, and retired the following year to pursue Continued on Page 58
