Suozzi alone with civic Pilip declines debate invitation BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (DGlen Cove) recently spoke about his platform and policies Thursday night with 3rd Congressional District constituents at Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park. The meet-and-greet was hosted by the Lakeville Estates Civic Association, which has close to 1,200 registered homes as members in the greater New Hyde Park Area. Suozzi, of Glen Cove, served three terms in the House representing the 3rd Congressional District from January 2017 to January 2023. He is vying for his old post against Republican candidate and Nassau County Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip (R-Great Neck) to replace George Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year. Suozzi told the meeting he was running to solve problems and help people. “I’m not running on Democrat vs. Republican, I’m running on who’s going to get things done compared to what we have in Washington right now with everyone fighting each other,” Suozzi said. “I’ll work with anybody if you want to actually help people and try to make the world a better place.” Suozzi, who has appeared at Continued on Page 38

South, Herricks students in semis High schools total 11 Regeneron semifinalists in worldwide competition BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Two dozen high school seniors across North Shore public school districts were named semifinalists in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search–the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Leading the way was William A.

Shine Great Neck South High School with seven students and Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington with five students. Long Island in total has 50 semifinalists, the most of any region in the country. From the crop of 300 semifinalists, 40 students will be selected as finalists, who are scheduled to be announced Jan. 24. Finalists will

show their work to the public, meet with prestigious leaders in the science community in Washington, D.C., and compete for a variety of awards headlined by the $250,000 top prize in March. The competition, formerly sponsored by Westinghouse and then Intel before its current sponsor, pharmaceutical company Regeneron, is run

each year by the Society for Science and the Public, with the goal of finding solutions to the world’s challenges from budding young scientists. From an initial 2,162 applicants, 300 students across 36 states and China were named scholars in 2024 and will each receive $2,000 along with their respective districts. Continued on Page 39
