Schools struggle to staff 2 in NHP revert to remote classes

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Public school districts across the North Shore are scrambling to remain open, with two already temporarily reverting to remote learning due to an increased number of coronavirus cases over the past two weeks.

New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School were in remote learning from Monday to Wednesday, the district said. The district has not said when in-person learning would resume.

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Two schools in the Sewanhaka Central High School District began the new year in remote learning due to staff shortages, bringing the number of schools in the district that have recently gone remote to four.

New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School were in remote learning from Monday to Wednesday, the district said. The district has not said when in-person learning can resume.

The two schools join Floral Park Memorial High School and H. Frank Carey High School who underwent remote learning in recent weeks before returning on

Monday. Due to faculty and staff members who were quarantined at the time, Floral Park Memorial High School and H. Frank Carey High School held classes via Google Classroom on Dec. 21 and 22 leading up to the holiday break, which ended this week.

At the district’s last Board of Education meeting on Dec. 21, Superintendent James Grossane said the decision was caused by a staff shortage.

“This is due to the high number of faculty and staff in quarantine for either being positive, being symptomatic and awaiting results from a PCR or determining to be close contact to someone with COVID-19,” Grossane said.

Among students, the overwhelming majority of cases are being contracted outside district grounds, he said in December.

“The percentage of students in quarantine for positivity or being in close contact is at 3.5 percent districtwide,” Grossane said. “That equates to 291 students for the five buildings out of 8,400 students in attendance.

Contract tracing continues to tell us that 90 percent or more of cases are contracting the virus at events outside the school.”

According to New York’s COVID-19 report card for schools, New Hyde Park Memorial had 77 students test positive from Dec. 22 to Tuesday. In the same time period, no teachers were reported to have gotten COVID-19.

For Sewanhaka High School, the state reported 47 new cases among students in the same time period, with no teachers reporting cases.

According to the data, the percentage of individuals at New Hyde Park Memorial and Sewanhaka who have tested positive for COVID-19 was 3.37 and 2.42 percent respectively as of Monday.

In late December, Grossane issued a statement to the district urging everyone to be cautious during the holidays.

“As we continue to deal with an uptick in cases on Long Island, we all must do our part to keep schools open,” Grossane said Dec. 30. “Everyone returning should assume that they have been in the same proximity as someone who is positive for COVID-19. If you participated in any sort of holiday gathering or travel whatsoever, please exercise increased vigilance for signs or symptoms of illness.”

A legal complaint was filed against the Great Neck Library Board of Trustees for filling a board vacancy in a way that allegedly violated library bylaws.

According to the complaint, which was submitted in Nassau County Supreme Court by Brian Stolar of Meyer Suozzi English & Klein PC, legal representative for the plaintiffs, the library violated bylaws by appointing someone to the board not recommended by the Nominating Committee. The vacancy on the board was a result of former Trustee Chelsea Sassouni resigning from the position, effective Sept. 14.

The complaint, filed on Sunday, lists library Trustee Barry Smith as one of the plaintiffs and five other trustees, Weihua Yan, Liman Mimi Hu, Kathleen Gold, Scott Sontag and Josephine Mairzadeh, along with the library itself, as the defendants.

Other plaintiffs include the library’s Nominating Committee Chairperson Marietta DiCamillo and Secretary Marianna Wohlgemuth, recently elected Trustee Donald Panetta and Village of Great Neck resident David Zielenziger.

According to the library bylaws, the Nominating Committee

is required to (and did, according to the complaint) “submit to the Board the names of two or more members of the Association from which the Board shall elect one Trustee to act until the next annual meeting at which time the membership shall elect a Trustee to fill the unexpired term,” referring to the Great Neck Library Association.

According to court documents, the committee provided the board with two names to be considered for the board vacancy on Oct. 21, less than 60 days after the resignation became effective, and in compliance with the bylaws.

Panetta was one of the names initially submitted by the committee, according to the documents, but became ineligible to fill the vacancy after he won another seat on the board in the library election in October.

The committee then submitted Zielenziger’s name to replace Panetta as the second recommended candidate to fill the vacancy, with the other name not disclosed in the documents. Teacher charged with giving vax shot Coronavirus inoculation allegedly administered by Herricks educator in Sea Cliff house

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY Herricks High School teacher Laura Parker Russo was arrested on New Year’s Eve for allegedly injecting a 17-year-old male with a COVID-19 vaccine without being a licensed professional.

Nassau County detectives said they were alerted by the teenager’s mother after he returned home from Russo’s Sea Cliff residence. The youth had allegedly gone to her home and was administered an injection by Russo, to which the mother had not consented.

After an investigation, it was determined that Russo was neither a medical professional nor authorized to administer vaccines, and she was arrested at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, according to police.

In a statement, Herricks School Superintendent Fino Celano said: “The individual in question is a district employee who has been removed from the classroom and reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation. The alleged incident is nonschool related. As this is a matter

F.P. debating parking permits near UBS Concerns surrounding litter, nonresidential parking on side streets presented to board

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y The Floral Park Board of Trustees is considering including the village in proposed state legislation that would require residential parking permits, along with portions of Elmont and Bellerose Terrace.

Officials said the idea is to keep UBS Arena patrons from parking in nearby residential areas. The opening of the arena has led to traffic and noise complaints in surrounding areas.

Since the public opening Nov. 20, the UBS Arena has been the home to the New York Islanders as well as hosting concerts, which will be held yearround outside of hockey season. Nearby residents have said that since November there have been issues with the venue.

At a December special board meeting of the Town of Hempstead, officials unanimously approved parking regulations on roads off Hempstead Turnpike including Locustwood Boulevard, and Heathcote, Huntley, Sussex, Warwick and Wellington roads. In addition, 106th and 109th avenues and Fieldmere and Pine streets were included. Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin said that issues have worsened due to delays to the completion of the parking garage on Hempstead Turnpike, which should be finished

Floral Park may follow suit with a request to be included in proposed legislation, officials said.

The potential remedy, sponsored by state Sen. Anna Kaplan and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, would institute residential parking permits for certain streets. Officials from Kaplan’s office said in order to pass a law creating a parking system in New York, there

has to be an agreement between the municipalities and state. Once the bill is introduced, Floral Park, Bellerose Terrace and Elmont would pass a local law in the form of a home rule message, indicating their desires for proposed changes in order for anything to be passed and signed into law.

Mayor Kevin Fitzgerald of Floral Park said a special meeting may take place soon to pass the home rule mes-

sage.

He said Floral Park has been able to avoid these issues by keeping the Mayfair Avenue gate closed, which maintains the quality of life for residents on the village’s West End. Problems may occur, according to the mayor, when the Elmont LIRR station in Bellerose Terrace, unveiled in November, becomes fully functional in both directions.

“We haven’t seen the same problems as Elmont right now,” Fitzgerald said at Tuesday’s board meeting. “It is conceivable that patrons can park in Floral Park, take the train a few stops, and go to their event.”

Fitzgerald said the parking system would incorporate a “large part of the village,” including the entire West End, and portions of Plainfield Avenue, Ward Street and Jericho Turnpike, among others. Officials said they are working with state officials to add the village alongside Bellerose Terrace and Elmont by the end of the month.

Many residents thanked officials for being proactive.

Resident Michael Culatta said: “I think this proposal is a great idea; we definitely support it. I just wanted to thank the mayor and all the trustees for all the work you do to protect the quality of life in our village.”

Ha Long Bay’s risky opening pays off

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y For many people, COVID-19 meant taking a step back and slowing things down.

For Billy Dang, it was the time to expand his business and open his second Ha Long Bay, a Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich shop, in Great Neck this winter, months after his original spot in New Hyde Park opened its doors last January.

“My friends kept telling me maybe now is not the time to open up another one,” said Dang, 50, of New Hyde Park.

“It’s just another day at work.”

Ha Long Bay isn’t Dang’s first culinary venture. After working with his father growing up in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, he got a call from his sister when driving for Yellow Cab about an open storefront on the Lower East Side.

“After we got a feel for the area, we knew it was perfect,” Dang said.

In 2004, Nicky’s Vietnamese Sandwiches opened, which he said was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants to thrive outside of Asian communities in the city.

Throughout his 10-year lease in the first location, he grew a following while adding two shops under the same name in different parts of Manhattan.

Nicky’s no longer exists, but Dang wanted to create the same spirit of providing the community with quality, well-

By the end of 2022, Dang is aiming for three additional locations on Long Island after seeing the tremendous community support thus far. Following his successes, even in the middle of the pandemic, Dang said he is confident more communities will embrace his vision and welcome the next Ha Long Bay. “It was definitely a gamble this year opening up the two locations,” Dang said last month. “But I hit blackjack.”

3 hospitalized in G.N. apartment fire Fire marshal’s office deems blaze to be accidental, nine treated at scene for minor injuries

An apartment fire in Great Neck last Thursday sent three people to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns, according to the Nassau County fire marshal’s office.

Nine people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, officials said.

Shortly before 10 p.m., heavy fire was found at the back of the building at 15 Clent Road and firefighters responded, officials said, including ManhassetLakeville Fire Department Companies 1 to 5 and the ambulance unit as well as fire companies from Albertson, New Hyde Park and Great Neck.

The fire was determined to be accidental.

“The fire was extinguished in under an hour, and it took some time before people could return to their homes to deem everything safe,” Assistant Chief Fire Marshal James F. Hickman said.

Longtime Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Lee Seeman said she will remain involved in helping revitalize the Great Neck business district now that her tenure in office has come to an end.

Seeman, in a phone interview with Blank Slate Media, said it has been an honor to serve as a town councilwoman representing the 5th District over the past 16 years. Interacting with business owners, she said, was one of the most fulfilling aspects of serving the town and is something she plans to keep doing as a Great Neck Plaza resident.

“I will try to continue doing helpful things in the community, walking around and talking to people,” said Seeman, a Democrat who did not run for re-election in November. “I like to speak with business owners to see how things could be improved.”

The coronavirus pandemic, she said, brought some hardship to existing businesses throughout the town and made it difficult for new ones to come and fill vacant storefronts. Despite the negative impact the pan-

demic had on the town’s retail economy, Seeman lauded the work that town officials did to combat the spread of the virus and promote ways to get residents tested and vaccinated.

“The town has been doing a wonderful job to battle what has been going on here in terms of the pandemic,” Seeman said.

“The town and even the county did the best that they could to try and stop the pandemic.”

Seeman, who has been an active member of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce for more than 30 years, touted the work of Plaza Mayor Ted Rosen in trying to recruit new businesses to come to the village and occupy retail space on Middle Neck Road.

“Ted Rosen is a wonderful mayor here and I am very proud to work with him,” she said.

Last month the Village of Great Neck Plaza designated a portion of Bond Street to be named “Lee Seeman Way” in honor of the longtime councilwoman. Rosen also declared Dec. 19 “Lee Seeman Day” in the Village of Great Neck Plaza.

Along with serving as a councilwoman since 2005, Seeman has worked with the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage

Abroad, U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi’s review board for students applying to federal service academies and the W.F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in Jerusalem.

Seeman is also a member of various community groups, including the League of Women Voters, the World Jewish Congress, Hadassah, a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Sierra Club and Temple Beth El of Great Neck.

Seeman said she will greatly miss everyone in the town she has worked with but hopes to continue seeing them during her walks around town. She also asked every North Hempstead resident to take time and appreciate being in “such a wonderful town like North Hempstead.”

Helping the town vote to not opt in to state legislation that would permit retail sales of cannabis in the town, she said, was something she was proud to be a part of before her retirement. With Republican David Adhami taking over Seeman’s role, she said she hopes that the town will continue to serve its residents well and make sure every problem brought to the board is addressed.

Town leads in dangerous intersections

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Half of Nassau County’s 10 most dangerous intersections are in the Town of North Hempstead, the Nassau County Police Department said Sunday.

In a Facebook post, the department listed the 10 intersections with the most accidents in 2021, all where local roads meet the Long Island Expressway. Searingtown Road’s intersection with the expressway in North Hills was in second place with 110 accidents, behind Syosset’s South Oyster Bay Road.

The department said enforcement was being increased starting this week at high-volume intersections.

Willis Avenue in Roslyn was sixth on the list, in front of Roslyn Heights’ Mineola Avenue with 77 and 68 accidents, respectively.

The ninth and 10th places on the Police Department’s list were North New Hyde Park Road in North Hills

and Glen Cove Road in East Hills, which tallied 63 and 55 accidents respectively.

Among the 10 intersections, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay had five each. Along with Syosset, which appeared twice, Jericho and Woodbury accounted for Oyster Bay’s other three spots.

In December, Newsday reported data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research that detailed auto fatalities recorded on Long Island in 2020. Suffolk, Queens and Nassau counties led New York with 113, 78 and 62 people killed respectively.

The Police Department cautioned drivers to avoid speeding, be aware of pedestrians and refrain from texting while driving. Pedestrians and bicyclists were advised to use designated crosswalks, wear visible clothing at night, wait for signals at intersections and avoid using headphones so they can hear traffic.

Former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said she expects a “bloodbath” for Democratic candidates in the 2022 midterms during an interview with Fox News over the weekend.

Curran, a Democrat who was defeated by a little more than 2,000 votes in November, said her loss to Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, was a result of the weakness conveyed by the Democratic Party. Curran also told Fox News it is important to have a confident leader.

“What we need always, and especially now, is someone who exudes confidence and competence,” Curran said.

“Someone who sets a reassuring tone … I think it’s going to be a bloodbath for the Democrats in the midterms.”

Efforts to reach Curran for further comment were unavailing.

Curran said the weakness could stem from the public perception of President Joe Biden, claiming many people anticipate constant slip-ups in his speeches.

“It almost feels like elder abuse with what’s going on with President Biden,” she said. “He has a hard time putting a sentence together. I think everyone gets

nervous listening to him talk, he’s going to mess up.”

Curran previously cited state Sen. Todd Kaminsky as one reason she was not re-elected. Kaminsky, a Democrat who lost the district attorney race against Republican Anne Donnelly, was attacked throughout the campaign for “authoring” state bail reform laws that eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanors along with nonviolent crimes.

Last month Curran told WABC “there’s not a doubt in my mind that I would have won if he were not on the ticket.”

Many people have referred to what happened in Nassau, with Republicans winning most of the county’s top spots and gaining one seat in the County Legislature, as a “red wave.” Lawrence Levy, the executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, said he attributes the “red wave” that hit Nassau County to many factors. State and national trends, he said, can play a larger role in local elections than some may think.

Levy referred to the 2009 county executive election in Nassau where Democratic incumbent Tom Suozzi was defeated by Republican challenger Edward Mangano. Republican voters,

Levy said, “were energized in the form of the Tea Party as a push back against Obamacare spending and liberals … were disappointed in Obama for not spending enough.”

Curran, he said, was the most recent victim of having national headwinds impact local races. Levy cited recent decreases in approval ratings for Biden and the abrupt end of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s tenure as possible reasons for more voters wanting to side with Republican candidates.

Curran told Fox News she still strongly believes in a two-party system, but the way the Democratic Party has “exude[d] weakness,” it gives the Republican Party more reason to promote candidates and tout what they can do for their constituents.

“People want to be reassured that government is there for them, not telling them what to do, but making sure the roads are in good shape, making sure the sewage is properly run, making sure that public safety is where it should be,” Curran told Fox News. “Unfortunately, my party is not delivering this right now.”

Curran received 140,476 votes, while Blakeman got 142,626, according to the Board of Elections.

Town to hold remote BZA meetings

BY R OB E RT PELAEZ Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena announced that the Board of Zoning Appeals will hold its hearings remotely due to an increase in coronavirus cases.

In a news release on Tuesday, DeSena cited the need to keep the public safe amid growing concerns over the omicron variant as a reason to shift the meetings to an online platform.

“The protection of public health and safety are paramount and as infection rates go up at a staggering pace during this winter surge due to the omicron variant, the Town is transitioning these Board of Zoning Appeals meetings to be remotely held through Zoom,” DeSena said.

In the news release, the town referred to legislation signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in September that permitted virtual meetings to continue for municipalities throughout New York in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

signed by then Gov. Andrew Cuomo in March 2020 that authorized public meetings to be held virtually. That provision was lifted on June 25, 2021, when the state’s disaster emergency ended.

The town has held monthly public board meetings and Solid Waste Management Authority meetings remotely since September after spending the two previous months meeting in person for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

Town officials did not say when any of the now-remote meetings would return to an inperson format. The town’s previously scheduled Jan. 5 hearing was adjourned to Jan. 26, officials said.

Officials said the Board of Zoning Appeals will hold meetings available at northhempsteadny.gov/townboardlive.

Public comments can be submitted to the board by emailing bzadept@northhempsteadny.gov, but they must be submitted at least an hour before the meeting begins, officials said.

District urges public Library unbiased in to ‘Adopt a Hydrant’ trustee nominations Winter is here, which means that Long Island could be hit with heavy snowfall at any time. With this in mind, the Roslyn Water District would like to encourage residents to adopt a fire hydrant this season by taking up the responsibility of keeping hydrants near their homes free of snow and ice, making it easier for firefighters to access them in case of a fire.

“Snow can present a number of challenges to homeowners, but removing snow piles from fire hydrants can be one of the most important to tackle,” said RWD Chairman Michael Kosinski.

It’s a quick and simple way to help save a life.”

Roslyn Water District officials know that their neighbors are among the most responsible and community-minded groups of people on Long Island and they are excited to see residents adopt hydrants around the District.

Residents can take a photo of the hydrant they have adopted and post to Facebook using the hashtag #AdoptahydrantRWD and tag the District’s page, @RoslynWaterDistrict. Taking to social media will go a long way toward spreading the word about this potentially lifesaving activity that anyone can do.

The District also asks that residents consider assisting any friends, family or neighbors who are not able to clear their hydrants on their own. Residents who leave their homes during the winter season are asked to notify neighbors who can make sure that hydrants are still clear of snow and ice while they are out of the area.

Blakeman follows Trump on COVID

D

uring the 2020 election, Bruce Blakeman served enthusiastically as the Nassau County Republican Party’s liaison to President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.

So it is no surprise that Blakeman, who was sworn in as Nassau’s county executive on Monday, is following in Trump’s footsteps on the handling of COVID-19.

Which is to say downplaying the threat posed by the omicron variant, rejecting mask and vaccine mandates and holding superspreader events.

Nassau County residents might be surprised to hear this because outgoing County Executive Laura Curran failed to connect Blakeman with Trump policies during the 2021 campaign and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

This failure to tie Blakeman to Trump, a lightning rod for Democrats, might explain the dismal turnout of Democrats, who held a 100,000 advantage in registered voters but were overwhelmed across Nassau County

by Republicans.

Curran, for her part, has blamed her loss on the GOP’s success in tying state Sen. Todd Kominsky to the botched rollout of bail reform by Democrats in the state Legislature.

On Sunday, Curran went on Fox News to add President Joe Biden to her list of excuses, saying the Democratic Party faces a “bloodbath” in the 2022 midterms if it doesn’t step up.

She added that “it almost feels like elder abuse with what’s going on with President Biden”

and called for a more articulate Democratic candidate for 2024.

One thing true is that Curran does know something or two about leading a bloodbath.

In the meantime, we have Blakeman following an example that has led to an actual bloodbath if you count the more than 800,000 Americans who have died from COVID – over 400,000 since vaccines became widely available.The death toll in Nassau now exceeds 3,350.

Blakeman chose to move ahead with his inauguration Monday at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City amid a surge in COVID cases with no indoor mask mandate or vaccine requirement to attend.

Other officials on Long Island and in New York state canceled plans for indoor inaugurations as did New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams.

The day before Blakeman addressed his inauguration plans, Dr. Adhi Sharma, president of Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital in Oceanside, called for a twoweek pause in nonessential activities due to concerns that there would be a further spike in COVID cases in the next two weeks.

Sharma said he was concerned that Nassau hospitals could be overwhelmed as COVID-19 hospitalizations on Long Island rose more than 73 percent in just seven days ending last Thursday.

Dr. Bruce Farber, chief of public health and epidemiology for Northwell Health, sounded similar concerns.

He noted there were tradeoffs in closing activities but said the risk level at the moment was

exceedingly high. Farber said he did not think the wave would last more than six weeks and that should be considered in making decisions.

Blakeman, like Curran, announced in mid-December he would not enforce Gov. Kathy Hochul’s order that restaurants, stores and all other indoor places in New York State must require customers and staff to wear mask or require proof of vaccinations for entry.

“Nassau County is not in crisis and should not be painted with the same broad brush as the rest of the state,” Blakeman said at the time. “Ninety-seven percent of adults in Nassau County have received at least their first dose of the vaccine, and Nassau hospitals have adequate capacity to handle existing demand.”

He added that he would use a “common-sense approach that acknowledges the facts, science and progress made by our residents while also protecting businesses and jobs from any further damage created by government

mandates.”

But Blakeman did not change his position two weeks ago when Nassau County’s positivity rate for COVID-19 cases hit nearly 13 percent – the highest seven-day rate of any region in the state.

And then last week he took a dangerous step of questioning the effectiveness of masks in the midst of a COVID surge.

“There’s no scientific evidence that it gets the numbers down,” Blakeman told Newsday when asked why he would not enforce Hochul’s indoor mask mandate, which took effect Dec. 13 and runs until Feb. 1.

“The physicians and health care professionals that I’ve talked to said it’s got to be an N95 mask.

And the vast majority of people are not wearing N95 masks; they’re wearing these cotton-type masks, paper masks, I think they are not that effective, based on the scientific evidence that I’ve seen,” he continued.

This raises an important question: just who are the physicians and health care professionals that

Because that is not the consensus of health professionals at the top hospitals in Nassau County.

Public health experts say that wearing any mask significantly reduces viral spread.

Dr. Bruce Polsky, an infectious disease specialist who is chairman of medicine at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island in Mineola, also pointed out that not enforcing Hochul’s mandates sends a “dangerous message to the public” that this is not important.

Experts acknowledge that N95 and KN95 masks are the most protective, but other types of masks are also effective.

Using higher-quality masks helps, “but it does not mean that a surgical mask or a cloth mask has no value, and with such high spread in the community now, it remains a useful tool,” Dr. David Hirschwerk, infectious disease specialist and medical director of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, told Newsday.

2022 our make or break year for U.S.

N

o matter what role you play in life, there is no question that the next 12 months will decide what kind of country the United States will be for the next 25 to 50 years.

In my lifetime, other than a number of wars, there has been no period of time that will be as consequential as the year 2022.

What makes this scenario so scary is that the people most affected by the decisions to come may not be in a frame of mind to do anything in response.

Everyone regardless of political party will tell you that at this point in time we are an exhausted nation. The COVID pandemic has sapped the energy out of almost every American. We are tired of long lines for vaccinations and tests. We are weary from the year and a half of home confinement.

Many are exhausted from having to home school their children or making sure that their

kids do their remote schoolwork.

Yet in the months ahead America will be faced with decision after decision that will impact the lives of its 350 million residents.

For the past year, state after state has been plotting to prevent its voters from having their ballots honestly counted. Local election officials, who work year-round to keep the system honest, are being supplanted in favor of local partisans.

Workers at election boards are being threatened with physical harm because they refused to twist the results in favor of a defeated ex-president.

The one place that can assure that we have national election integrity is the U.S. Congress. But many of its members don’t want elections to be fair and impartially run.

The upcoming election in November will be the first test of whether the local political mischief was effective but will anyone be ready to go to battle in protest?

The Congressional investigation into the insurrection

that occurred on Jan. 6 is moving along and each day we are learning who the culprits are that were plotting to prevent a new president from taking office.

The thought that a sitting President Donald Trump could be working day and night to overturn the results of the November election is the most frightening aspect of this entire mess.

It is obvious at this stage of the inquiry, that if Vice President Pence agreed to be part of the plot, the results of the presidential election would have been nullified.

When the January 6 Commission finishes its work, there is now no doubt that not only was the president plotting to stay in office, he did so with the active support of sitting members of Congress who were working actively to tear up the U.S. Constitution.

When all the facts come

out, we will have learned that through luck we avoided America becoming another Nicaragua. The real question to be asked is will our country be prepared to see that the culprits are brought to justice?

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on the legality of the Mississippi anti-abortion law. There is a strong possibility that the court will nullify Roe v Wade and tell millions of American women that they are not free to make decisions about their own lives.

The anti-choice advocates will hold victory events but will the people most affected rise up in protest?

Today’s America is a tired and divided country. We have been through so much since March 2021, but can we afford to sit back and let the flame of democracy die out by doing nothing? For most of our citizens, 2022 will be a test. Are you up to this test?

A LOOK ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Finding the zest in my life, in my kitchen

I

have just been through a lifechanging experience and I owe it all to—a zester.

“A what?” said my spouse.

“A zester. It’s a small metal kitchen utensil. It’s about the size of a paring knife, except instead of a blade it has a head with a row of little holes — they look like tiny brass knuckles only in stainlesssteel. You drag it over the outside of an orange or a lemon, and it makes long thin strips of peel that you can cook with. They’re called ‘orange zest’ or ‘lemon zest.’”

“I always wondered what that meant.”

“Well, now you know. And now you can help me look for my zester, because I need it and it has disappeared.”

I only need a zester a few times a year, including Thanksgiving, when the orange peel is essential for the cranberry sauce.

We were actually past Thanksgiving, but one of my sons had been out of the country on Turkey Day, and I had promised him a Thanksgiving-Observed whenever he got home; and no Thanksgiving is official without cranberry sauce. Some of us think it’s even

more essential than the turkey.

I had the cranberries, purchased ahead and frozen since Thanksgiving. I also had the sugar, the orange juice and two beautiful, thick-skinned navel oranges.

All that remained was to “zest” the oranges and put all the ingredients into a pot.

Only one problem: No zester.

“I know it’s here! I know it’s somewhere in the house,” I said, frantically, turning over couch cushions.

“What would it be doing in the sofa?” my husband wanted to know.

“How should I know?” I replied, exasperated. “But I’ve already looked everywhere sensible.

Now I’m looking everywhere else.”

“But seriously, Judy — the sofa?”

“Do you have a better idea?”

“Actually, yes, I do. How about looking for it in the kitchen — in that drawer of what-do-you callits?”

“The Drawer of Sharp Things?”

“That’s the one.”

“You don’t think I’ve looked there already? Three times?”

We ended up using a vegetable peeler on the oranges, then cutting the skin into slivers. It was not great.

I sat there, all through Thanksgiving Observed, trying not to depress anyone, but I was very upset and couldn’t help complaining, “I lost the zester! Just when I needed it.”

Finally, in desperation, I did the only thing that’s ever been known to bring a lost item back.

Not praying to St. Anthony, but making an offering to his secular cousin. In other words, I ordered a replacement on Amazon.

Later that day, I was carefully putting a knife back in its drawer when my hand came out with— the missing zester.

“I found the zester!” I yelled, heading into the living room to show it off. “I found it.”

“And where was it?” everyone wanted to know.

“Um…right in the Drawer of Sharp Things, where it belonged.”

“Then how come you never found it the three times you looked?”

“It was under a bottle opener with the same exact handle.”

The rest of that day, instead of erupting with “I lost the zester!,” I erupted every 90 minutes with “I found the zester!” I asked my kids whether they thought I had gone completely crazy, but they wouldn’t answer.

I know the answer. I know I was acting like a toothless Granny in the Ozarks, rocking back and forth on her front porch, muttering to herself except for periodically shouting “I found the zester!”

But I didn’t care, because I found the zester.

Suddenly, my husband’s cellphone buzzed with a message and he went out to our own front porch.

When he came back he said, “Actually, I found the zester!” He was holding up a package from Amazon.

So all we need now is two rocking chairs. We’ve already got all the zest we need.

Only a strong nation can face its past

T

here are adults living in the United States that believe there is a movement afoot in public education to teach young people a slanted version of American history, in order to weaken patriotism by evoking shame and guilt.

The impulse to sanitize or downplay history is not uniquely American.

For a half century following World War II, government leaders in France downplayed a horrifying chapter in their history. On July 16 and 17, 1942, two years after Paris fell to Nazi German forces, French police arrested more than 13,000 Jewish people living in Paris, including 4,115 children, at the behest of German authorities and with the eager complicity of the French Vichy government.

Thousands of French police were divided into small arresting teams charged with seizing Jews from their Paris homes. Using address data compiled by the Vichy regime, police pounded on apartment doors and ordered occupants out.

Distraught mothers pleaded with French police to leave their

children behind; to no avail. An unknown number of Jews escaped.

Dozens of public transport drivers were parked outside, waiting in buses to deliver 7,000 Jewish detainees to the Velodrome d’Hiver, a sports complex best known for its six-day bicycle races.

Parisians affectionately referred to the arena, located just blocks from the Eiffel Tower, as the Vel’ d’Hiv. The remaining 6,000 were transported directly to Drancy and other transit camps in the northeastern suburbs of France.

At the Vel’ d’Hiv, water and food were in scarce supply and hygienic conditions were dreadful. Access to lavatories was blocked by French police. Human waste accumulated everywhere.

Disease was widespread among the children. Hundreds fell ill to diphtheria, scarlet fever and measles. Little medical support was available, with only perfunctory care by Red Cross workers. Those who tried to escape were shot instantly.

ing conditions that some leapt to their deaths from atop the bleachers.

Over the course of a twomonth period, all of the 7,000 Vel’ d’Hiv detainees were shuttled to transit camps. Men were separated from women. Infants and young children were taken from their mothers.

They were then deported in sealed railway wagons to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Sobibor, the killing centers in Germanoccupied Poland that would be their final destination.

For decades after WWII Vel’ d’Hiv was swept under the rug

by leadership in the French government.

On the 53rd anniversary of the roundup in 1995, French President Jacques Chirac broke the conspiracy of silence by apologizing and exhorting the French to confront their wartime past.

In all, more than 77,000 Jews living in France were deported to Nazi concentration camps where 72,500 were murdered.

Although French students are now taught about the 1942 roundup in school, antisemitism continues to be fueled by Holocaust-denial theories promoted on social media.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who denies that France was responsible for the Vel d’Hiv roundup, said that she wants French citizens “to be proud to be French again,” adding that this will not occur if they learn only the darkest facets of French history.

Teaching students about the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup does not mean labeling all French as Nazi collaborators. For example, many farmers and townspeople

in France made heroic efforts to hide Jewish children and lead them on to safety in other countries, at great risk to their own lives.

To get a more in-depth feel for the roundup, I recommend the 2006 novel “Sarah’s Key”

by Tatiana de Rosnay. It is a fictional but historically accurate representation of the events surrounding the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup, which will mark its 80th anniversary on July 16, 2022.

In 2016, French President Emmanuel Macron commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup with an impassioned address in Paris.

He said, in part, “By acknowledging its faults, France has opened the way to repairing them. That is to its honor.

That is the sign of a strong nation that can face its past. That is the courage of a people not afraid to examine its conscience and reach out to the victims and their children. Reaching out and reforming ties does not mean humiliating ourselves. It is standing tall and being strong.”

Never forget, only a strong nation can face its past.

Honoring a champion of biodiversity

T

he recent death of Dr. Edward O. Wilson, naturalist, and entomologist, brought accolades for his decades of work, spanning his important discoveries on how ants communicate, which led to his controversial theory of Sociobiology, to his pleas for the preservation of biodiversity.

His ability to see both the tiniest of detail and the big picture of planet-wide loss of diversity, made him a giant of science.

His address given at the opening of the invertebrate (creatures without spines) exhibit at the National Zoo in Washington DC in 1987, “The Little Things That Run the world (The Importance and Conservation of Invertebrates)” laid out not only the sheer numbers of invertebrates, with roughly 43,000 named species of vertebrates vs. 990,000 invertebrates, but the fact that they are the underpinning of every biological function on earth.

These are the little things: beetles, butterflies, worms, spi-

ders, and marine invertebrates including crabs and lobsters, mollusks like squids and clams, and coral. The things we mostly regard as pests. The things we poison, squash, shriek about, and generally disregard.

The bottom line, as Dr. Wilson stated, is that invertebrates can do fine without us but not the reverse. He laid it out in his landmark address, “The truth is that we need invertebrates but they don’t need us.

If human beings were to disappear tomorrow, the world would go on with little change.

Gaia, the totality of life on Earth, would set about healing itself and return to the rich environmental states of a few thousand years ago.

But if invertebrates were to disappear, I doubt that the human species could last more than a few months. Most of the fishes, amphibians, birds, and mammals would crash to extinction about the same time.

them the physical structure of the majority of the forests and other terrestrial habitats of the world. The earth would rot. As dead vegetation piled up and dried out, narrowing and closing the channels of nutrient cycles, other complex forms of vegetation would die off, and with them the last remnants of the vertebrates.

The remaining fungi, after enjoying a population explosion of stupendous proportions, would also perish. Within a few

decades the world would return to a state of a billion years ago, composed primarily of bacteria, algae, and a few other very simple multicellular plants.”

Though Dr. Wilson retired from Harvard at age 73 in 2002, he never stopped working. He subsequently published a dozen books and created “The Encyclopedia of Life” (eol.org) a website that will eventually house information about every known species. His most intense focus was on raising awareness of the loss of biodiversity.

In 2016 he published “HalfEarth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life”. It laid out the argument that only by leaving the world half wild, could mass extinction be avoided. This has spurred other scientists to work on achieving this goal.

The E.O. Wilson Foundation (eowilsonfoundation.org) continues his work, seeking solutions to the crisis of loss that continues like an avalanche. Scientists can only warn of what is to come. It will take political and

social will and willingness to change, money, and resources. It is also up to each of us to change in order to create a future that will support humans and the rest of the earth’s inhabitants.

The first thing is to realize that nature is not a separate entity from us. We live in it, we try to harness it, we pollute it, poison it, and extract resources that cannot be replaced. Unless we learn to live with a little less, future generations will pay the price.

From the simplest change – like leaving your leaves as mulch- raked, not blown under shrubs. That leaf litter is an essential part of the survival of many invertebrates. Use a fan instead of insecticides to keep mosquitos away from your patio.

Plant native plants, get rid of a large portion of your lawn.

Stop using “cides”. For a greener new year, a greener future, educate yourself, be part of the change and be part of the solution.

Ferocious campaigns ahead of midterm votes

J

an. 1, 2022 is a signal shot to start off the midterm campaigns in which Republicans are doing all they can to control access to voting and who and how ballots are counted.

“Grim Reaper” Mitch McConnell, salivating at resuming the position of Senate Majority Leader, has said Republicans will not present an actual agenda or platform – well, except for impeaching Biden (as Ted Cruz has promised), shutting down the Jan. 6 special committee, censuring and throwing Democrats off committees and reinstalling Trump or a Trump-like candidate in office in 2024.

That means they won’t tell you that as soon as the Republicans regain control of Congress, they will likely take their 90th vote to repeal Obamacare, shut down any investment in clean, renewable energy, restore the tax-free haven for the wealthiest individuals and corporations, dismantle civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights, criminal justice.

They will make sure that no vacancy on the Supreme Court is

ever filled by a Democratic president ever again. And they will set the stage for the return of Trump or another fascist dictator wannabe – which means they will install the Trump acolytes who weaponize the Big Lie. Republicans have made a huge campaign issue over the rise in crime (based on 2020’s atypical figures) but the rise in violent crime tracks with the normalization of violent rhetoric by Trump and his minions and the ever-increasing availability of guns.

Yet Republicans continue to block any sensible gun regulation, and now have the support of the Trump Supreme Court, and have done nothing to rein in violent rhetoric and intimidation. And the strategy of intimidation and violence has filtered down to state and local levels – public health officials and health workers, school board members principals and teachers are not safe.

bidding, or driving them from office altogether. The 2022, 2024 list of Republican candidates at all is jammed crammed with those whose entire platform is based on a banner of the Big Lie and restoring Trump to power.

But before getting to 2024, they have to set the stage in 2022 – hence all the Trump endorsements for candidates for secretary of state, state attorney general, indeed at every level – with people who, unlike what happened in 2020 with officials rejecting

Trump’s extortion, will do his bidding and subvert elections – quite literally rigging the election, stealing elections.

The right-wing extremists are focusing now on local elections, especially school board elections.

We are already seeing the ramifications locally.

I was struck by the “inauguration” speech of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Republican, who after a quixotic nod to “bipartisanship”, spent her five minutes repeating ad nauseum an attack on Democrats and the Democratic administration (no matter the actual record or facts) and generally showing her ignorance of the town government she is now supposed to lead.

More disturbing was the speech of Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Republican – who, like DeSena, held an in-person inauguration proudly declaring no mask or vaccination required – and I guess thinks he will score points with the MAGA crowd by an ostrich-like approach to COVID-19.

Indeed, Blakeman’s message,

as Nassau County faces extraordinary spike – 6,040 cases and 5 deaths on January 1; 5195 cases and 5 deaths on January 2; 4,306 cases and 5 deaths on January 3; a 7-day average of 407.77 cases per 100K population, second to NYC, and highest rate of positive cases, 25.49%, in state and 10,411 hospitalized statewide — was to declare “Starting today, Nassau Is Normal Again.” (For comparison, the rates for Nassau County on Dec. 1, the first day Omicron was detected in New York State: 890 cases, one death, 4.61% positivity, 41.63 cases per 100K, and 3093 hospitalized statewide.)

When Blakeman declared “public safety” his priority, he didn’t mean protecting residents from COVID-19 or keeping children and teachers safe and schools open (several have had to close for lack of staff), or even promoting gun safety, but rather, sending lobbyists to Albany to repeal the Bail Reform Act. Challenges to consider on L.I. in 2022

T

hings to Consider in 2022 Since the beginning of 2021, Covid has had Long Islanders on an emotional roller coaster of vaccines, boosters and new variants. With hospitals understaffed and healthcare heroes overworked, it was hard to find a light at the end of last year’s tunnel. And if that weren’t enough, small businesses, especially restaurants, have found it difficult to remain viable.

So, let’s say goodbye to 2021, and look forward to tackling problems and thinking big for the year ahead. Here are five topics that, if addressed, will kick this New Year off right: Inflation and the 2 Percent Tax Cap Inflation accelerated to 6.8 percent in November 2021, which was the highest level in almost 40 years. With the supply chain in tatters, businesses trying to hire from a diminishing pool of applicants and the nation’s purchasing power outstripping the supply of goods, inflation is here for the foreseeable future.

Inflation also doesn’t bode well for public schools and municipalities under the 2 percent tax cap. If annual inflation continues at almost 7 percent, the 2 percent

tax cap represents a 5 percent loss of real income to government coffers. Expect the 2 percent tax cap to be a hot button issue during the coming 2022 New York State election cycle, especially as new collective bargaining agreements come into play.

Go Green and Shop Local If I had a nickel for every elected official who asked our community to go green and shop local, I’d have a lot of nickels. If you are a politician who asks your constituents to go green, then please enact green initiatives to practice what you preach. Every municipality should have every government building put through a comprehensive energy performance contract to lower their carbon footprint. Also, I’ve said this in previous articles, but it’s worth repeating, “There is state aid available for all 127 Long Island public school districts to put cash flow positive solar on their flat rooftops.” You can’t teach Long Island’s almost 500,000 public school students to be good stewards of the environment if you don’t model it.

And any new municipal vehicles purchased to replace an aging fleet should be electric.

Shop local sounds great, but take a drive around any neighbor-

By the way, these warehouses were built in part with your tax dollars from IDA tax breaks. Elected officials can encourage consumers to shop local by providing grants to chambers of commerce to subsidize free local small business delivery. This value-add to small businesses would help local retailers compete with Amazon and would provide a legitimate action item for politicians.

Develop the Nassau Hub Another four years have gone by and there still isn’t a concrete vision to improve the Nassau Hub. Sadly, the $180 million spent renovating the Nassau Coliseum was

completely wasted the minute the UBS Arena opened in Elmont.

There are unlimited possibilities for the 72 acres in Uniondale. Let’s hope RXR, the master developer of the site, announces something exciting soon, and the Town of Hempstead, who controls the zoning, helps to fast track development.

Eisenhower Park Eisenhower Park is the centerpiece of Nassau County and larger than Central Park in Manhattan.

Manhattanites regularly spend the day in Central Park because it’s a beautifully well-kept tourist attraction. With that in mind, when was the last time you decided to take your family to Eisenhower park?

The newly elected Republican Nassau County executive, Bruce Blakeman, has a Republican majority on the Nassau County Legislature. Blakeman would have no impediments to investing in Eisenhower Park to make it a world class destination. It would be an easy and fabulous opportunity to improve the quality of life for Nassau residents.

Covid and the Anti-Vaxxers Covid has killed over 800,000 Americans and left many more disabled with a myriad of health

issues. Those adding to the Covid death toll and straining the hospital system are mainly from the anti-vax crowd. The Orange County register reported on Dec. 29 that 87 percent of virus hospitalizations are from the unvaccinated. A Dec. 31, a NY Post chart showed the unvaccinated hospitalization rate to be even higher.

Anti-vaxxers claim it’s their body, their choice, and don’t want to be forced to vaccinate. Okay, but the rest of us will be footing their bills with increased insurance premiums. Health insurance companies could easily solve this issue by significantly raising health care premiums for the unvaccinated. Life insurance companies already charge more if you’re a smoker. The health care system could also add a hefty surcharge to every hospital bill for those who can’t show proof of vaccination.

This would go a long way to making vaccination a prudent financial decision.

Let’s hope Covid fades away and local governments plan proactively, instead of reactively, this coming year for a healthier environment and robust economy.

Little goals, big goals or no goals at all

O

nce again, it’s time to make those New Year’s resolutions and we all know how that works.

The theory behind this process is a good one. Reflecting upon the past year and making a firm decision to do or not do something in the future.

There is a long history to New Year’s resolutions that date back 4,000 years to the Babylonians, who marked the New Year in the spring before harvest time by promising to return farm equipment that was once bor-

rowed. During Roman times, Caesar determined that the New Year begins on Jan. 1 after the Roman God Janus, the two-faced figure who looks backwards as well as forwards.

The tradition of reflecting upon the past year and resolving to improve in the new year continues unabated and modern-day resolutions often mirror modernday problems, so we hear people wanting to lose weight, get more organized, spend less money, enjoy life more, stay fit or fall in love. All worthy goals indeed.

But alas, statistics show that only about 8 percent of people who make resolutions achieve them.

That’s a weak stat.

As you might guess, there is an abundance of tips you can use to increase your chances for success. These include framing the resolution in positive terms, spend time each day assessing whether you are making progress, keep it simple, pick a goal which will make you feel better, define it clearly and my personal favorite which is “to ink it.” That

means write it down and keep it in a place that you see it each day.

These are all worthy suggestions. I type out my goals for the year and I tend to get about a third of them done by year’s end.

Bucket list goals like traveling to Capri or Lake Como tend to get accomplished with regularity.

Weight loss efforts have worked, but that is because I know how to manage my sweet cravings with harsh penalties such as giving my significant other $20 if I have any sweets that day. That strategy is

called response cost, and it works well.

Other goals, however, like making more money, networking more vigorously or finding happiness seem to resist change.

This year my big goal is to get my book to the publisher on time (Sept. 1, 2022) and progress is heading in that direction.

But as I age and as the grim reaper continues to make his presence felt, it dawns on me what a key resolution should be.

It is about the little things in life rather than the big things. Indeed, it is nice to go to Paris for a few days or to get another book published by Routledge. It is nice to play golf in Pebble Beach and hang out in Carmel-by-the-Sea. These are big things for sure.

But the bulk of the joy in any life most certainly comes from the small things of everyday life.

Things like knowing all the shopkeepers in Williston Park. Luigi Suppa, the tailor; Jared, the architect; or Harry, the deli owner.

And then there is Allan Walsh, the jeweler; the florist, Konstan;

or Hunter and Tom of Hildebrandt’s. The sweetness of Marty in the post office and Suhwa and Minho in Aroma Hair and Nails.

All this is the small town magic of Williston Park.

Our days are long and stressful, but in between the stress are the simple quotidian pleasures of the day like going to pick up lunch at Hildebrandt’s or dropping off the mail and saying hi to Marty or picking my shirts up at the cleaners and having David Kim say “Hello, Dr. Ferraro!”

The simple goodness of a life is embedded in the community, a term which becomes increasingly eradicated as we shelter in and avoid death by COVID. So my biggest new year’s resolution is to appreciate these little things that make up my life. These are the daily rituals that sustain us.

The kind looks of familiar faces that smile and say hello. If I can accomplish that goal this year, it will be a very good year. The success of living and working in a place that is familiar and that you can call your home.

lease don’t compare Donald Trump to Hitler. I do not remember Hitler celebrating Hanukkah with his Conservative Jewish daughter and grandchildren.

I do not remember Hitler moving the U.S. embassy (I know Israel wasn’t created yet) to Jerusalem.

I do not remember Hitler making peace in the Middle East

with the Abraham Accords which would have earned anyone else a Nobel Peace Prize.

While Hitler hired Josef Mengele to inject people with poison and kill them, Donald Trump,

with Moncef Mohamed Slaoui in charge of the project, made the COVID vaccine with warp speed to protect millions of people.

I know you hate him and think he is a politically incor-

rect vulgarian, but until he starts throwing people into ovens don’t compare Donald Trump to Hitler.

Chalk one up for letter to the editor contributors

K

eep Those Letters Coming Congratulations to my fellow class of 2021 Letter to the Editor writers. Surveys reveal that Letters To the Editor is one of the most widely read and popular sections of any newspaper. Weekly newspapers such as our own Great Neck News and other Blank Slate Media publications all offer readers a chance to speak out. The same is true with daily newspapers such as the New York Daily News, Post, Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsday and Staten Island Advance. There are also numerous foreign language daily and other weekly newspapers.

Weekly newspapers tend to offer more space for writers than daily newspapers. Some daily

newspapers have quotas of no more than one letter every 30 or 60 days per writer. Most daily and weekly newspapers will print letters submitted by any writer regardless of where they live so long as the topic is relevant to readers.

It helps to have a snappy introduction, good hook, be timely, precise, have an interesting or different viewpoint to increase your odds of being published. Many papers welcome letters commenting on their own editorials, articles or previously published letters to the editor.

We continue to be fortunate to live in one of the few remaining free societies, with a wealth of information sources available.

Sadly, most American cities and

suburbs are down to one local daily or weekly newspaper. Newspapers have to deal with increasing costs for newsprint, delivery and distribution along with reduced advertising revenues and declining readership.

Many of us have opinions on news not only from Washington, Albany and City Hall but also neighborhoods and local issues which impact our communities and daily lives.

I continue to be grateful that the Great Neck News along with other daily and weekly newspapers afford both me and my fellow letter to the editor writers the opportunity to express our views, as well as differing opinions on issues of the day. Thanks to you, ordinary citizens have the freedom

to comment on the actions and legislation of elected officials in any Letters to the Editor section.

Public officials use taxpayers dollars to promote their views via mass mailings of newsletters, news releases, letters to the editor and guest opinion page columns.

In many cases, they are produced or written by campaign or office staffers who are paid for by taxpayers. The rest of us have limited time to submit a letter. In the marketplace of ideas, let us hope there continues to be room for everyone, including the Great Neck News.

Explore these college savings strategies Enrolling in a trade school or college is widely considered the next step after a student graduates from high school. College is especially popular, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 62.7 percent of high school graduates went on to colleges and universities in 2020.

Finding ways to pay for higher education has long been a goal for students and their families. PrepScholar, a college testing preparation resource, calculates that, by 2033, students can expect to pay around $237,000 at in-state public universities and $464,000 at private colleges or universities for four-year degrees. That high cost is why so many families take proactive steps to set aside funds for college soon after their children are born. No matter the situation, taking the steps to plan and save helps to make schooling more affordable.

529 college savings plan A 529 is a specialized savings account for college and university costs. Most plans can be opened by a U.S. citizen or resident alien age 18 and older. The individual opening the account can be a parent,

grandparent, cousin, or even a friend. The student is the beneficiary of the account.

Four-year schools, community colleges and vocational/trade schools accept 529 accounts as payment sources. The only requirement is that the school must participate in the U.S. Department of Education student financial aid programs.

Education savings account, or Education IRA The financial experts at Ramsey Solutions say an ESA works like a Roth IRA but it is designed specifically for education expenses. Individuals can invest up to $2,000 (after tax) per year, per child. The account grows tax-free. The rate of growth varies based on investments in the account.

Ramsey estimates that at an average return rate of 12 percent on a $36,000 investment ($2,000 per year for 18 years) would grow to around $126,000 by the time the child starts college. An ESA also can be used to pay for K-12 private school tuition, school supplies, tutoring, or textbooks. It also can be transferred to a sibling if the money is not needed for a particular student.

UTMA/UGMA plan This plan is different from ESAs and 529s because it is not specifically designed for college savings. The Uniform Transfer/ Gift to Minors Act is in the child’s name but is controlled by a guardian until the child reaches age 18 or 21. This mutual fund account can be used to save for college with reduced taxes, or funds can be used for other expenses, such as a car or housing.

Advanced placement classes AP classes allow high school students to take college-level courses that can be converted into college credits. Each AP class reduces the need to pay for a class in college. This can add up to some significant savings. In addition, performing well in AP classes may make students more attractive to colleges and universities, helping students to earn academic scholarships.

How to find a tutor for your child Tutors provide an invaluable service to students across the globe. Students at all grade levels utilize tutors, and the results such tutors produce may surprise even the most ardent tutor supporters.

A 2009 study from researchers at the Chabot College Office of Institutional Research found that tutored students had higher pass rates on average than nontutored students in every class examined.

Those classes included anatomy, biology, business, and chemistry. In addition, one study published in the American Journal of Physics found that human tutoring can result in classroom test scores that are 35 percent higher than software-driven tutoring.

Such results have understandably made many parents true believers in the power of tutoring. Parents who want their children to work with tutors but don’t know where to find one can try these strategies. · Contact your child’s school. Many schools offer free tutoring programs, and such programs can provide the one-on-one attention students need to understand their lessons. After-school tutoring programs offered by schools also may provide curriculum-specific tutoring that aligns directly with what students are being taught in the classroom. Schools also may have information about local private tutors and tutoring firms, so parents should not hesitate to con-

tact their children’s school. · Ask around. Fellow parents can be great resources when looking for tutors.

Other parents can share their own experiences working with certain tutors, and may be able to point you in the direction of tutors who specialize in certain areas, such as mathematics or the sciences. · Contact local community organizations. Local community organizations such as the YMCA also may offer free or low-cost tutoring programs to members or even non-members. Parents are urged to consider these programs, as they may be staffed by local college students, including undergraduates and post-graduates. When speaking with local organizations, ask how they choose their tutors and inquire about the educational backgrounds of those tutors. · Consider online tutoring services. Online tutoring services are another option, and one that can be especially valuable for families that live in remote or rural areas where in-person access to tutors may be hard to find. Search the internet for online tutoring services, making sure to read reviews and even request testimonials from past clients before signing up.

Parents have numerous resources at their disposal that can help them find tutors for their children.

How parents can pitch in at their children’s schools Giving back to one’s community can take many forms. Some may give back by supporting legislature to make communities more inclusive, while others may volunteer with their local fire departments. Parents of school-aged youngsters can typically find many opportunities to give back through their children’s schools.

Parents who volunteer with their children’s schools often get a unique glimpse into their children’s life at school. Such parents may see how their children interact with educators and classmates and gain greater insight into the school community where kids spend so much of their time. Volunteering at school also can benefit kids, who may recognize the importance of education more readily if mom and/or dad are spending their free time on campus.

That recognition can leave to improved performance in the classroom.

Parent-teacher associations can be great resources for parents who want to volunteer with their children’s schools.

Each year, students graduate and move on to new schools or colleges, and that means schools are in fresh need of parent volunteers each school year. Though each school has its own unique needs, the following are some roles parent volunteers may be able to play at their children’s schools. · Tutor · Mentor · IT support: Parents with significant experience in tech or information technology can offer to lend a hand or provide advice or insight in support of a school’s IT staff

· Organizer: Schools host many functions in a typical school year, and officials typically ask parents to pitch in so such events can be successful. For example, parents can help organize school fundraisers, dances and holiday bazaars. · Chaperone on field trips · Assistant coach: Many schools pay stipends to the head coaches of their athletic teams, but parents can serve as unpaid assistants or support staff during the season. For example, parents can volunteer to work as gameday staff, taking tickets at the gate or directing ticket holders where to park. · Club official: Extracurricular clubs also can benefit from parents willing to work as volunteers. The warning signs of dyslexia Obstacles are bound to challenge students at some point in their academic careers. Students can sometimes overcome obstacles by recommitting themselves to their studies, while others, including dyslexia, require help from parents and educators.

According to LD Online, an online resource that seeks to help children and adults with up-to-date information about learning disabilities and ADHD, as many as 43.5 million Americans from all economic and ethnic backgrounds have dyslexia. Dyslexia is also prevalent in Canada, where the learning disability resource The Reading Clinic estimates as much as 20 percent of the population has dyslexia.

Learning disabilities can be challenging at any time, but they may be especially so when in-person access to educators and academic resources is limited or unavailable. Such was the case for many students during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, when schools abruptly switched from inperson learning to remote learning in an effort to curb the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

During the pandemic, millions of parents of school-aged children found themselves taking on the role of educators. That can be challenging for any parent, but especially so for parents of children with undiagnosed learning disabilities. Dyslexia is a complex learning disability, but one that may produce noticeable symptoms, which can vary depending on a child’s age.

What is dyslexia?

The Reading Clinic notes that dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin and characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition.

What are some warning signs for dyslexia?

LD Online notes that it’s a myth that people with dyslexia read backwards.

Students may have difficulty remembering letter symbols for sounds or forming memories for words, but they do not read backwards. In addition, LD Online notes that individuals with dyslexia may experience difficulty with: · Learning to speak · Learning letters and their sounds · Organizing written and spoken language · Memorizing number facts · Reading quickly enough to comprehend · Persisting with and comprehending longer reading assignments · Spelling · Learning a foreign language · Correctly doing math operations Parents, especially those homeschooling their children during the COVID-19 outbreak, who notice any of these symptoms should report them to their children’s teachers immediately.

Trump poses a clear and present danger

T

his is in response to two letters in the most recent News that strenuously objected to any comparison between Nazi Adolf Hitler and Republican Donald Trump.

I thought both writers shared Trump’s grasp on the truth.

I am currently reading “Hitler,” an exhaustive biography by Brendan Simms. In it I found a small but interesting fact to add

to the Trump/Hitler comparison: “Things were starting to look up for Hitler personally in 1929. Thanks to the generosity of patrons, the sales of his works and a systematic under-reporting

of his actual income to the tax authorities, his finances had stabilized.”

I send this plea to the letter writers: Please try to recognize the clear and present danger

posed by Trump, a pathological liar and the most immoral man to ever darken our democracy.

o Members of the Village of Thomaston Historic Preservation Commission: The Great Neck Historical Society strongly supports the proposal before the Village of Thomaston’s Landmark Commission to landmark the Belgrave Motors building, also known as the Tower Ford building, at 124 South Middle Neck Road.

This Tudor Revival building, which is in pristine condition, graces the entranceway into Great Neck and blends with other notable buildings of the era,

many landmarked by the Village of Great Neck Plaza.

As all of you know, it is significant that the New York State Historic Preservation Office has deemed the building eligible for both the state and national registers of historic places. Not only is such a designation an honor, but owners may also qualify for economic incentives such as tax credits and grants.

The villages of the Plaza and Thomaston have wisely enacted local laws establishing Landmark Commissions to protect buildings

with historic and/or architectural importance. While the Great Neck Historical Society has a recognition program for buildings or private homes of significance, it does not have the legal authority to actually protect them from destruction.

We have witnessed the neglect and disrepair of notable buildings worthy of saving, and know that if they are in shambles, developers will advocate for demolition. The Playhouse Theater is the most recent example of this process. We are currently

working to save the Steppingstones Lighthouse and the Saddle Rock Gristmill, but their fates are uncertain.

It is heartening to see a new generation of passionate, eloquent residents rise up to fight against losing the Belgrave Motors building. We often hear the lament “Great Neck is just not what it used to be.” It is critical that we recognize and appreciate what has not been lost and what gives character to the look of our hometown.

Buildings like Belgrave Mo-

tors are irreplaceable, and with a creative vision, can be successfully repurposed to spark new life into the heart of the peninsula.

The Village of Roslyn is a thriving example of such actions.

You, as commission members, are being given a great opportunity along with the power to do something beneficial for our whole community. We urge you to use that power to save this very special building.

Trump has uneasy relationship with the truth

I

never got around to reading the issue dated Dec. 24, so I didn’t see the letter by Mr. Goldberg, of Great Neck, to which two of your readers referred in their rebuttals. However, there are points in those rebuttals that I believe warrant a response. (In the interest of full disclosure, I have long been a registered Democrat and voted against Donald Trump in the elections of both 2016 and 2020.)

First of all, for the sake of accuracy: It was Josef Goebbels, not Hitler, who said, “If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.” He explicitly defined the deliberate statement of an untruth as an essential part of propaganda that cemented Hitler’s status as leader of Germany in the 1930s.

That’s a lead-in to the point that whether one admires or disdains Donald Trump and whether or not one agrees with the various policies he proposed and implemented, it was universally acknowledged even by his supporters that he often made statements that were simply and directly untrue. Indeed, one major American newspaper (which also opposed his elections) actually undertook to count the number and came up with something over 20,000 by

the time of his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Many of those misstatements were admittedly trivial and might be considered a quirk in his personality rather than a deliberate effort to mislead the public, reinforce his standing with his base, and possibly increase the number of voters who supported him. In most of those cases, it can’t be determined (except perhaps by those personally closest to him), whether many of them were made up “on the fly” in response to a question raised and he became trapped rather than admit the mistake; perhaps he heard someone say something (“some people are saying”) and chose to believe it; or he was genuinely convinced of it; or, not to be excluded, he lied deliberately in order to achieve some personal or political objective. Someday we may find out which of those possibilities applies to which and how many of his statements that were demonstrably and sometimes blatantly false.

However, there are a few points that I believe warrant mention because they illustrate something about his character and motivation. I’m pretty sure most, if not all, of this publication’s readers will recall them: 1) He said, as a hurricane

approached the Florida coast that he had informed the Alabama governor that the federal government would provide assistance in repairing the hurricane damage. When he was told, by all (i.e., many) meteorologists and other people knowledgeable about storm tracks that this particular hurricane would turn north over Florida and avoid Alabama, he famously took a Sharpie and, on the map of the region illustrating the predicted path, drew his own black line extending a loop westward to encompass a portion of southeastern Alabama.

In that case, he was unable to concede that his off-the-cuff forecast, as someone who had little or no knowledge of weather science, might have been wrong.

2) In a memorable press briefing during the throes of the developing COVID epidemic, he preposterously contended that the infection could be treated by cleansing the patient’s affected organs with Clorox, or by exposing them to UV light—and he even turned to ask his primary medical adviser, Dr. Birx, “Isn’t that right?” Her discomfort was visible to all who watched the televised event and/or the many replays, but he never found it appropriate to admit to

an error.

There are far too many more examples of such ignorance and/or stubbornness, but I believe that more recent events are indicative of the deliberate use of lies to achieve his personal goals. In one case, he called the secretary of state of Georgia and asked that he “find” just the exact number of votes in a recount that would give himself rather than Joe Biden the victory in the state and its eight electoral votes. In the second case, after the election had been held, the votes counted, and following the attack on the Capitol, he asked the attorney he had only very recently named as acting attorney general to have the lawyers in the Department of Justice all sign a letter stating that, because of widespread election fraud, the reported election results should not be confirmed and the winner, Joe Biden, should not be inaugurated as president.

That letter was never prepared by the DOJ, only because all of the department’s attorneys said they would resign en masse rather than sign such a false statement.

In both of those cases, it is clear that he was not only lying (although he possibly believed it himself) but was deliberately

and fully prepared to enlist others in his pattern of lies rather than concede that he had lost the election. That, along with so very many statements by Mr. Trump himself reinforcing the “big lie” that he had actually won but was a victim of fraud, can be seen as the modern-day application of the approach of Josef Goebbels.

So the question has to be posed to voters who chose DJT in the elections of 2016 and 2020: Even if you agree with and approve of the policies he chose, can you continue to support a local, state, or federal official —up to and including the president of the United States— who lies so often, whether for trivial, casual reasons or to help achieve his ambition?

How confident can you be that future policy proposals will not be primarily in the service of the nation and its people but rather as a means of enhancing his personal goals, and that his statements about the expected impact are, whether deliberate or not, yet another example of his propensity to lie when he finds it convenient?

High-flying market likely to slow

H

ealthy and Happy New Year to all my readers!

Unless you haven’t read a paper or watched the news, we all know that real estate went ballistic between the third quarter of 2020 right through 2021. Anyone owning a home saw their appreciation excel by 19.7 percent (13.61 percent inflationadjusted) through July 2021 as per the S&P/Case-Shiller seasonally adjusted national home price in index and in some areas even higher.

This was the largest year-overear annual growth ever recorded.

Of the 20 major cities, according to Standard & Poor’s, Phoenix had posted the highest increase of 32.41 percent increase as of July 2021, followed by the top six cities of San Diego (27.79 percent), Seattle (25.5 percent), Tampa (24.41 percent), Dallas (2.66 percent), Las Vegas (22.45 percent), and Miami (22.2 percent). Even NYC posted a 17.86 percent increase.

The Mountain region had the highest house price increases of 25.57 percent year over year to July 2021, followed by the Pacific (22 percent), New England (20.84 percent), and South Atlantic (20.16 percent), according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a certain number of in-

dustries in the private sector saw workers’ pay increase 4.6 percent, adding to those who were buying.

Millennials comprised 67 percent of mortgage applications from January-August.

It’s very sad that we were hit by the Corona-19 pandemic and the variants that have occurred since. However, this unfortunate situation made more than 500,000 individuals and families leave New York City to go out east to Long Island, down south to the Carolinas and Georgia as well as westward to remove themselves from the crowds and afford them more space and work from home environments. Most major cities throughout the U.S. had very much the same occurrences.

While I could see the market cooling a bit in 2019, the pandemic in March 2020 and its inherent fear and deaths that followed caused our government to shut down businesses from MarchJune 2020. However, this created an amazing pent-up demand that exploded and catapulted back like it was on steroids. This fueled sales way beyond what experts or anyone else could have expected. Last year saw even greater activity and appreciation, as shown, in the previous figures.

dicted this quite amazing feeding frenzy that occurred? Also, with the government providing serious stimulus money for so many, this gave additional impetus for those who could afford to go out and buy. Many came to the realization that the safety of the suburbs and being outside major cities was the most advantageous and beneficial.

The timing was spot-on to come to that decision to make the necessary move.

The pandemic created the increased demand, coupled with the historic lowest interest rates, caused the housing inventory to be reduced much faster than normal.

In effect this was responsible for many bidding wars and higherthan-normal price increases and

appreciation over the past 18 months.

This year will also be excellent, but unless more homes come onto the market, sales will be reduced. However, the limited inventory being chased by the still strong demand and still low interest rates will again increase prices and appreciation, but probably not as aggressively as in 2021. Unless rates go up enough to cool off demand, the market will still continue to be strong. However, due to price appreciation, even with our low, low rates, it has caused those who were trying to purchase either to leave the market or move to those states where homes are much more affordable.

This unfortunate situation will continue as rates increase, buyers’ habits change and other possible variables pop up to cause a slowing in demand. The pandemic has thrown a serious monkey wrench into the process but also caused it to come roaring back. People will continue to purchase as they did back in 1981, during a very severe recession, when rates were as high as 18.5 percent, but prices were at rock bottom. But those who bought, refinanced years later and if still remain owners, probably have had the greatest appreciation.

How long and how far the market will run is unpredictable.

Builders across the country are not even coming close to constructing new homes fast enough to meet demand; sales will moderate and prices will increase but at a slower pace over the next few years. The only thing that will make a marked difference will be much higher interest rates, which will normalize demand and over time allow inventory potentially to increase.

However, I do not see prices crashing anytime in the near future, but increases will be more in keeping with the inflation rate but avoid the double digits we experienced in 2021.

And yet, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (both up for reelection) who have sabotaged efforts to protect their citizens and end the pandemic, are now asking federal assistance

– DeSantis actually demanding $1 billion from Biden to buy the monoclonal antibody therapeutics from his biggest donor’s company – at the same time they are attacking Biden (who unlike Trump, did nothing but pit states against each other like Hunger Games and did not distribute aid based on political support and is doing his damnedest to protect people, including mobilizing health workers, distributing 500 million tests, PPE and hospital equipment).

COVID-19 is the first politically weaponized pandemic. (Reminder: vaccinations have virtually eradicated small pox which killed 300 million just in the 20th century,

as well as measles and polio.)

As Paul Krugman wrote in the New York Times, “Sure enough, the anti-vaccine strategy has worked politically. The persistence of Covid has helped keep the nation’s mood dark, which inevitably hurts the party that holds the White House — so Republicans who have done all they can to prevent an effective response to Covid have not hesitated, even for a moment, in blaming Biden for failing to end the pandemic.

“And the success of destructive vaccine politics is itself deeply horrifying. It seems that utter cynicism, pursued even at the cost of your supporters’ lives, pays.”

Goosby Plaza at Town Hall, renamed in 2020, Clavin thanked those in attendance as well as his supporters, including town and state officials. N. Shore districts scramble to staff schools Continued from Page 1 at the time, Floral Park Memorial High School and H. Frank Carey High School held classes via Google Classroom on Dec. 21 and 22 leading up to the holiday break, which ended Monday.

According to New York’s COVID-19 report card for schools, New Hyde Park Memorial had 77 students test positive from Dec. 22 to Tuesday. In the same period, no teachers were reported to have gotten COVID-19.

For Sewanhaka High School, the state reported 47 new cases among students in the same time period, with no teachers reporting cases.

According to the data, the percentage of individuals at New Hyde Park Memorial and Sewanhaka who have tested positive for COVID-19 was 3.37 and 2.42 percent respectively as of Monday.

According to figures from the state’s Department of Health, in the Port Washington school district 304 students, 48 teachers and 46 staff members had contracted COVID-19 since Dec. 22, a total of 398 individuals.

Figures showed that in the Mineola school district 225 students, 41 teachers and 19 staff members had contracted COVID-19 since Dec. 22, a total of 285 individuals.

In the North Shore Central School District 184 students, 52 teachers and 25 staff members had contracted COVID-19 since Dec. 22, a total of 265 individuals, statistics showed.

North Shore interim Superintendent Thomas Dolan released a statement to the district about at-home testing kits.

“We received our kits from BOCES yesterday afternoon,” he said. “We were required to pick them up and we safely stored them. There is one box (containing two kits) available for each of our students. We would like to make these kits available for pick up by parents and propose to start that process on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

We will allow parents to pick up one kit per child from 3:30 p.m.

to 6:00 p.m. according to the following schedule:” In the East Williston school district, 128 students, 27 teachers and 25 staff members tested positive for the coronavirus since Dec. 22, according to the statistics.

In Great Neck, 112 students, 47 teachers and 15 staff members had contracted COVID-19 throughout the district since Dec. 22, a total of 174 individuals, according to the figures.

In the Floral Park-Bellerose school district, 77 students, 18 teachers and 16 staff members had contracted COVID-19 from Dec. 22 to Tuesday, a total of 111 individuals, according to the state’s Department of Health.

According to the figures, in Herricks 95 students, six teachers and eight staff members had contracted COVID-19 throughout the district since Dec. 22, a total of 105 individuals.

In the Roslyn school district, 16 students, three teachers and two staff members had contracted COVID-19 since Dec. 22, a total of 21 individuals.

Roslyn Superintendent Allison Brown released a statement Wednesday to the community, posted on the district’s website regarding new guidelines issued late Tuesday night.

“Please be advised that my administration and I are reviewing the New York State Department of Health guidance that was issued late yesterday, which advised that additional guidance from CDC for schools is expected in the coming days. Once issued, the NYSDOH will review that guidance. For the time being, schools will follow the current NYS school guidance regarding school attendance that we have been following since September 2021. We are in the process of consulting with our medical director and the Nassau County Department of Health and will reach out shortly regarding updated COVID-19 quarantine and isolation protocols.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul introduced a five-pronged plan to combat the winter surge of the coronavirus on New Year’s Eve, with the first point being keeping schools open. More than 5.5 million tests will be distributed to school districts throughout the week, with state officials anticipating nearly 6 million to 7 million more in the coming days. State officials said New

York has secured 37 million tests to be distributed to school districts throughout the state.

If a student tests positive, officials said, classmates can have a test kit at their home and return to in-person instruction once they receive a negative test, rather than quarantining.

Hochul again urged New Yorkers to get vaccinated and wear masks indoors to help prevent the spread of the virus.

“We can get through this surge through targeted actions, partnerships with local leaders, and by taking common-sense steps to keep us all safe: get vaccinated, get boosted, and wear a mask indoors,” Hochul said.

“We have every tool to keep our families and communities safe,” acting state Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said.

“We must ensure we use them all. Governor Hochul’s targeted plan to expand vaccination and booster access, mask and test, and increase measures to protect our health care workers is the comprehensive strategy needed to combat the fastspreading Omicron variant.”

Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s Departments of Medicine, said people who are fully vaccinated have about a 40 percent protection rate against the omicron variant.

Those with a booster shot have roughly a 70 percent protection rate against the variant and about a 90 percent protection rate against developing severe illness.

“We can only say that those receiving boosters are much less likely to become infected compared to those receiving one or two shots,” Hirschwerk said in a statement to Blank Slate Media. “And with that, they are less likely to become transmitters of the virus. If they do become infected despite vaccination, they do remain contagious to others.”

Hirschwerk, who also serves as an associate professor of medicine at Hofstra/Northwell’s School of Medicine, said Pfizer and Moderna “have performed better with respect to reducing transmission” than the Janssen J&J vaccine.

often roll my eyes or chuckle when I read the weekly title of Karen Rubin’s View Point column but to assert that “Biden has record of big results in 2021-Dec. 31, 2021” is perhaps the most ludicrous thing that she has written yet. Joe Biden won the presidency with the narrowest of margins with a mandate as a unifier of the political parties and he would whip the Covid epidemic by following science. Within a year he has proven he can’t do either.

President Biden has rolled over to the left wing of his party, which has alienated Republicans, Independents, and centrist Democrats as well. His polices have caused large spikes in energy costs, which have directly resulted in increased inflation rates that we haven’t seen in decades. Illegal immigration is rampant on our Southern Border with increased drug and sex trade trafficking.

Internationally Russia is emboldened to threaten the Ukraine and China militarily is threatening Taiwan. The withdrawal of Afghanistan was an unmitigated disaster.

Americans and allies were left abandoned in the country, millions of dollars of military equipment were left for the Taliban and 13 service members lost their lives in the bungled evacuation.

Candidate Biden claimed Donald Trump’s Covid policies unnecessarily killed Americans and he would stop the pandemic. In reality in less than a year of his administration more people have died of Covid than during the Trump administration and Covid is as rampant as ever. Just recently he has seemed to waive the white flag and

stated it’s up to state government to solve the covid surge.

Biden’s proposed massive spending, left-leaning Build Back Better agenda has garnered little support nationally and even within his own party there is more then one senator against it. Despite his assertion that the BBB would pay for itself, the neutral Congressional Budget Office stated the proposed spending plan would add $3 trillion to the deficit.

Biden had also stated his administration would be the most open one. However, even with white glove treatment by most member of the press, he continues to refuse to answer reporters’ questions and his cognitive ability is in question even by members of his party like former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. On several occasions, during public functions, he stated that he would get in trouble if he answered questions. Exactly who would he get in trouble with? Who is in charge?

The above have resulted in huge disapproval ratings and a recent Red Wave nationally on Long Island, Virginia, New Jersey and elsewhere. Political pundits predict a definite turnover of the House of Representatives to Republican control and possibly the Senate as well. For anyone to state that the Biden Administration has been a success one must question their own mental cognition.

“We have been watching very carefully what has been done in the last few months and how we can improve that,” Blakeman said during a news conference at the Nassau County legislative building. “Rather than directing resources to fining businesses with mask mandates, we are directing our resources to make sure people get test kits, opening up PCR testing sites and mobile vaccination units so every community in Nassau County can have access to free vaccinations.”

In other words, he discouraged the use of masks to prevent the spread of disease but then offered tests that help people determine if they caught it.

This is better than nothing.

The only problem is that the National Institutes of Health has found in initial studies the tests do detect the omicron variant but “may have reduced sensitivity,” meaning they could be less likely to identify infection.

Blakeman, like Curran, also continues to oppose vaccine mandates for county employees – as instituted months ago for city employees in New York.

In the meantime, Hochul issued an order for all SUNY and CUNY students to get booster shots by Jan. 15, a measure that was already taken by colleges such as Hofstra University. Hofstra, it should be noted, partnered with Northwell to open a medical school on its campus.

The good news is that the omicron variant appears so far to be less deadly than previous forms of the virus and is expected to ebb over the next several weeks.

The bad news is that it is far more contagious and the person now leading Nassau has not learned the lessons of the past.

n Jan. 2, our newest county legislator was sworn in at the Chabad of Great Neck.

Whether or not it is legal to hold an elected official’s swearing-in at a religious institution is unclear.

What is clear, however, is that the mayor of Great Neck’s largest village is involved in county and state elections and heavily promoting Republican candidates.

In 60 years of living in Great Neck, I have never seen a local mayor identify what political party they belong to.

Local elections have always been nonpartisan, until Pedram Bral was elected. Local mayors are expected to tend to their village’s affairs, something Mayor Bral seems unable to do effectively. While his village infrastructure is crumbling and residents complain of empty storefronts and insufficient services, he is busy promoting Republican candidates, celebrating Repub-

lican victories and making speeches about the upcoming “bloodbath” he expects in the midterm elections.

It’s not just politics that Bral sticks his nose in, though. His speech promoted a “conservative agenda” and the need to “bring God back into our schools,” and included homophobic comments about the curriculum and a personal attack against one educator who continues to dialogue with him about the need to address sensitive topics with students. What does “I believe in chromosomes” mean anyway?

And if that weren’t enough, this event on Jan. 2 had hundreds of people indoors without masks. That’s no surprise, though. Mayor Bral has continually minimized the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and the importance of masks and social distancing, no doubt contributing to the alarming rise of case numbers in his village.

How did our once proudly progressive town get to this point? Low turnout in the last election surely contributed to the success of a slate of elected officials who do not truly represent the best interests of this community. Great Neck was always known as an inclusive, liberal, welcoming community. It is time to return to those core values and stem the tide of repressive and dangerous ideologies that has erupted in our town.

If you care about the future of Great Neck, the time to act is now.

Get involved. Attend local meetings and make your voice heard. But most importantly, get out and vote — not just in the national elections, but in EVERY local election. Otherwise, Great Neck will not be Great for much longer.

Don’t treat DeSena the way I was

D

emocrats in North Hempstead are reeling from the shock of losing the supervisor and other seats they held for decades.

In 2017, Nassau Republicans were more shocked when I was elected the first Democratic Hempstead supervisor in 112 years. Similar to the situation I faced, the new Republican supervisor, Jennifer DeSena, takes the reins of a township where she is in the minority and the opposing party holds a majority on the town board, where much of the municipal power lies.

I urge the Democrats in North Hempstead to eschew the temptation to use this power for strictly political purposes and to instead to reach out to Ms. DeSena in a spirit of collaboration.

Ms. DeSena’s recent comments indicate she believes that the Republicans in Hempstead gave me a warm reception upon arrival. She is mistaken.

In contrast, my reception in 2017 was far icier than I expected. At the last town board meeting of my predecessor, former Supervisor Anthony Santino, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito (Santino’s chief of staff ’s son whom he appointed to his seat), Councilman Edward Ambrosino (since indicted, convicted and disbarred) and Councilman Dennis Dunne voted to give raises and/ or transfers to about 200 people.

They also voted to amend a union contract so virtually no employees could be laid off even in a financial crisis -both in an effort to tank my administration before it even began.

When I arrived for my first day in the office as Supervisor, I discovered what I came to know is called an “upper decker” was left for me in the private office bathroom. (If you don’t know what that is, find SNL sketch “Paranormal

Activity’ with Kate McKinnon discussing upper deckers and ghosts.)

Basically, it involves feces and the toilet tank. Soon after, I discovered that the supervisor staff ’s furniture had been shipped out and replaced with pieces slated for a dumpster, including a sofa that had only a strip of plywood for the bottom and that new Democratic clerk Sylvia Cabana’s office had been left stripped bare.

Next, I found out that I was not invited to certain other councilmembers’ swearing-in ceremony and that instead they planned to have tax collector Don Clavin play supervisor.

Upon hearing of this, however, Republican Town Attorney Joe Ra rebuked them and I attended. Joe Ra was a gentleman to me and believed that there was a level of decency that always should be accorded to the office — even for a Democrat. This was just my first day.

Despite all this, in the beginning, I really thought we could move forward and have good bipartisan government.

I would call each councilmember and ask them if they wanted to discuss the agenda or anything else.

Routinely I was told, ‘Just talk to the majority leader,’ a newly created title for Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney. Councilman Bruce Blakeman, would meet with me then, as he endorsed my candidacy and was my appointed deputy.

Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby met with me but caucused with the Republicans. Unfortunately, it became clear to me not too far into my term that bipartisan utopia was not going to happen.

The goal was to obstruct and prevent me from having wins in order to

ensure that Don Clavin could play supervisor for real in 2020.

While wanting your party’s candidates to win is natural and fine, thwarting good government initiatives and putting politics over governing and delivering for residents is not.

I was able to achieve some notable wins during my tenure working with Erin and Bruce: ethics reform, passing the first-ever multi-year capital plan to repave roads and fix the crumbling town infrastructure, scoring a $10M grant for Baldwin redevelopment, among others; but there were so many great things that did not happen because of this obstruction.

For example, this winter home and business owners across Hempstead could be saving at least 15% on their heating bills as energy costs soar if the Hempstead councilmembers supported the Community Choice Aggregation proposal I put forward.

I even left a letter for Don Clavin on my departure urging that he advance this and other thwarted measures. So far nothing has happened and residents are the losers.

Obstruction and juvenile, meanspirited behavior should have no place in government. Again, I urge the Democratic majority coalition in North Hempstead to try and work collaboratively with the new incoming Republican supervisor; to meet with her and offer her the chance to govern with you in the bipartisan way I had hoped would take hold in Hempstead.

DiCamillo, in an email to Blank Slate Media, backed the choices of potential candidates that were submitted to the board.

“The candidates put forth by the Nominating Committee for consideration of the Board of Trustees, for the replacement of seat vacated by Chelsea Sassouni, were selected based on their knowledge of the library; were open-minded; were experienced in fiscal matters; were perceptive concerning community needs; and were dedicated to maintaining a professional and congenial atmosphere that members of the public expect,” DiCamillo said.

“The Nominating Committee never enters the interview process with preconceived thoughts, keeps an objective mind and bases their selections solely on a candidate’s ability to represent library needs of a very diverse community of Greater Great Neck (including North New Hyde Park).”

Yan, the board president, said during a Dec. 21 public meeting that the board expressed its concerns about the nomination to the committee twice and was told by committee officials that the board should interview each of the people whose names were presented. Yan said the board told the committee that if nothing else was submitted before the 60-day deadline after Sassouni’s resignation, outlined in the library bylaws, the board would continue the search on its own.

Yan said the board opened its own interview process on Nov. 29, which lasted until Dec. 3. On Dec. 2, he said, the board received another name from the committee, a person that also applied for the position through the board’s process. He also said five members of

the board were present when 14 interviews with “qualified candidates very objectively” occurred on Dec. 13, 15 and 17.

Ultimately, he said, board members were pleased with their nomination of Jenni Lurman to fill the vacancy on the board for the remainder of Sassouni’s term for the next year, which would expire at the library’s annual meeting in January 2023.

Smith attempted to make a motion to table Lurman’s appointment, but no other board member seconded it.

The decision to push forward with the appointment was met with strong opposition from community members during the virtual meeting on Dec. 21. After pleas from residents to postpone the appointment until a future meeting, the board approved the appointment, 5-1, with Smith being the only member in opposition.

Members of the public became more verbose and began to sharply criticize board members, claiming they did not act in the public’s best interest.

Hu said the board had reverted to abiding

by New York state law, which supersedes the bylaws, due to the Nominating Committee’s recommendation of a “divisive” candidate, which Hu claimed was a violation of the bylaws.

own interview and recommendation process,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Lurman has since resigned from the trustee position.

Smith, in his affidavit, said he was informed the board was planning to once again try and fill that trustee position during the library’s annual reorganizational meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday night, but has since been postponed.

Board officials did not immediately say why the meeting was canceled, but Hu said that “multiple trustees have been threatened and harassed” in an email to Blank Slate Media.

Efforts to reach other board members, Stolar, or the board’s legal representation, Bee Ready Fishbein Hatter & Donovan LLP, for further comment were unavailing.

Stolar, in a cease and desist letter submitted last month, said the board “decided to veer off course” from adhering to the bylaws by trying to eliminate the committee in the October election. Although 526 people voted to eliminate the committee and 391 in favor of keeping it, the vote was below the 67 percent required to pass.

Smith, in his affidavit, said the library faces “imminent irreparable harm” if the board appoints someone to serve outside of the bylaws’ jurisdiction.

“During the pendency of this proceeding, it is urgently necessary that the court prohibit the board from appointing or electing any person to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Trustee Sassouni (and the subsequent resignation of Jenni Lurman) unless the proposed appointee was among the names proposed by the Nominating Committee,” Smith said.

Town requests extension for tax payments North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, and members of the Town Board have aggressively advocated on behalf of town residents by urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to extend the deadline for payment of the first half of the 2022 General Taxes.

The request comes as the Town pursues various options to provide financial relief to residents and businesses during these challenging times. Currently, the

final day to pay without interest or penalty is Feb. 10. In a letter written to Governor Hochul, Supervisor Bosworth requested the deadline be pushed to March 10, 2022.

“We are asking the governor to extend the deadline to March 10, 2022, as the latest date allowable for paying taxes without interest or penalty,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We believe this extra time will be helpful to individuals who have been impacted

by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Online tax payment information is shown on the reverse side of your bill. Online payments may be made by check (ACH) or credit card at: northhempsteadny.gov/ tax-payments. A $2.00 processing fee for online check payments will apply.

N. Shore University Hospital appoints director North Shore University Hospital has appointed Dr. David Hirschwerk, as its medical director, effective today.

Hirschwerk, who spent nearly two decades at Northwell Health, most recently served as executive vice chair of the Department of Medicine at NSUH and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park.

Hirschwerk is an infectious disease specialist whose focus includes infections in immunocompromised patients. He has been a leader in Northwell’s response to

the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. care package (ex: Succulents, Aloe Vera, Ferns, English Ivy, Spider Plant).

At the same time, also outdoors, the JCC will be collecting donations to benefit local organizations including: new or gently used children’s books to benefit Book Fairies, used cell phones to benefit Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine for domestic

violence, clothes and household goods to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island, non-perishable food to benefit SJJCC’s Community Needs, used eyeglasses to benefit the Lions Club, and gently used shoes to benefit NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

From 1-7 pm that day the JCC will host an indoor New York Blood Center blood drive in response to an emergency blood shortage.

Alzheimer’s Foundation awards research grant The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) began its 20th anniversary year by announcing a $998,156 grant to the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research to expand research into developing new treatments aimed at addressing some of the most problematic behaviors of dementia — hallucinations, delusions, and aggression.

The new five-year study builds on research previously conducted with a $500,000 grant AFA awarded to the Feinstein Institutes in 2016.

Psychotic symptoms and aggression are among the most troubling manifestations of dementia-related illnesses.

Violent behavior directed towards caregivers is emotionally devastating and can be dangerous for those charged with providing a safe environment.

Tragically, these behaviors are difficult to treat; and persistence of these symptoms are often the indication for placement outside of the home in a residential healthcare setting.

“There’s no better way to begin AFA’s 20th anniversary year than by making this investment in hope,” said AFA Founder and Board Chairman Bert E. Brodsky.

“Finding new ways to treat these symptoms would have an enormous impact on safety and quality of life—both for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Researchers at the Feinstein Institutes are making exciting progress, and this new funding will enable them to continue building on it.”

“A new year brings new beginnings, and we hope that this research will be a new chapter in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” said AFA President and CEO Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. “Just as AFA builds on the progress of its past twenty years, this new funding will help the Feinstein Institutes start the next phase of its research toward new treatments.”

A team of scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Koppel, co-director of the Litwin-Zucker Research Center at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, have recently

found an association between the distribution of abnormal tau proteins in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients as visualized with advanced PET neuroimaging and psychotic symptoms.

A previous discovery made by the team linked impairments in the processing of facial emotion with the onset of psychosis in Alzheimer’s.

This, together with new PET scan evidence of abnormal tau in brain regions believed to be critical for this faculty led investigators to the hypothesis that tau disrupts networks in regions of the brain necessary for reality testing. Investigators believe that this may result in psychosis and aggression.

“The funding provided by AFA made our work possible; and the ongoing support is critical, allowing us to do the necessary research to translate these discoveries into safe and effective treatments for patients and caregivers,” says Koppel.

The next five-year phase funded by the new AFA grant aims to target these

symptoms through the development of immune therapies in the form of antibodies that bind to pathogenic tau.

Researchers will conduct a study comprised of three types of participants—those with both Alzheimer’s and psychosis, those with Alzheimer’s but without psychosis, and healthy controls between the ages of 65 and 85.

Participants will undergo a battery of cognitive and electrophysiologic testing, with levels and location of tau quantified in each group with new tau PET imaging technology. The goal is to identify which areas of the brain correspond to specific symptoms, so that they can be targeted through antibody treatments.
